Protecting Yourself and Your Home: A Basic Warding Ritual

Protecting Yourself and Your Home: A Basic Warding Ritual

Author: Blondechilde

Have you ever moved into a new home and thought to yourself, “Gosh this place feels so empty and sterile! I wonder how to make it feel more like home quickly?” Worse yet, have you ever thought to yourself, “Eww, this place feels chaotic! It makes me feel like a nervous wreck! How can I cleanse it and make it feel calm again?” Conversely, have you ever walked into someone else’s home and thought, “Wow, their home feels so safe, protected, and relaxing. I wonder how I can make my home feel that way?”

All three questions can be answered with one word: Warding. Mirriam-Webster identifies the etymology of the transitive verb “ward” as Middle English. It means to guard or watch over, or to turn aside (as in the phrase “trying to ward off a cold”) . A warding ritual puts up a kind of permanent circle that protects you and your home from unwanted outside influences. It can also help your home feel safe, inviting, and relaxing.

The following warding ritual is based on one my high priest teaches our coven. I have used it for several years with excellent results.

Determine the extent of your wards

This particular ritual requires walking the perimeter of the space to be warded. If you are a homeowner and you’d like to ward your entire lot, you will need to walk the borders of your property line outside your home. If you are warding an entire house, you may choose to walk the exterior perimeter as opposed to the interior. If you live in a condominium or an apartment like myself, the interior perimeter of your home probably works best.

Walking the interior perimeter of a dwelling can be tricky when dealing with interior walls. You may choose to ward them as well or work around them. I prefer to work around them; I usually walk the perimeter as far as I can, then pause my chanting a bit while I walk around to the other side of the interior wall and find the next available space on the perimeter, then I recommence my casting and continue onward.

In addition to warding your entire home, you may wish to place additional wards on specific rooms within your home. Doing so strengthens the protection. I prefer to ward my home first, and then ward my bedroom as well.

Before performing this ritual, please read the important discussion of ethics on warding shared spaces and rental property that follows later in this article.

Gather your materials

I use salt water to represent earth and water together, and burning incense to represent air and fire together. You may combine elements like this or represent them singly using different materials. I have occasionally represented earth with sand, air with a large feather, fire with a candle, and water with ice. Decide if you want to represent the four elements in pairs or singly, and then choose elemental representations that work best for you.

Clear your space

Much the same way you clear a space before casting a circle, you will want to clear your home of negative and chaotic energies before you put up a protective ward. I prefer to walk every room in my home while ringing a bell loudly. Other sound-based cleansings include the usage of singing bowls and clapping hands.

Cleansing may be also done with smoke or scent, as in smudging with sage smoke or heating essential oils like sandalwood or peppermint. Even something as simple as opening windows to allow in sunshine and fresh air can accomplish the goal of cleansing. The idea is to chase away any negative or disruptive energy so that your home is fresh, clean, and calm before the ritual. Remember, you want your wards to keep the good stuff inside and the bad stuff outside!

Perform your ritual

Choose which elemental representation to use first, and carry it with you while you walk the entire perimeter of the space to be warded in a deosil (clockwise) direction. As you walk, visualize the element (s) forming a great barrier going up all around the space. I visualize the four elemental barriers as mountains, waterfalls, leaping flames, and gusty winds full of leaves and sand. Pass the elements over all portals (windows, doors, fireplaces, gates, etc) twice, for extra strength and protection.

As you pass each of the elements over your home in turn, repeat this chant while you walk:

By (element) , I ward thee:
Guard this space from all ill will
and all those who wish me/us harm.

If you are representing the four elements singly, you will circumambulate your space four times, each time chanting the above incantation for the specific element you carry. If you are representing the elements combined in pairs, you will circumambulate your space twice, alternating your chant back and forth between the two elements you carry.

Maintain your wards

With this ritual, you will create living wards that need regular maintenance to stay strong and effective. In a sense, you will need to feed and care for your ward as you would a pet. When I am healthy and my energy levels are up, I strengthen and repair my wards with my own energy.

I will sit in the center of my home with my eyes closed and my palms up, and I visualize pouring my own energy from my palms into the wards around me. A friend of mine touches the front door to her apartment briefly and pours a little energy into her wards that way every time she leaves the house.

Another way to strengthen your wards without depleting yourself is to draw energy from an outside source and channel it into your wards. I have accomplished this by channeling energy drawn from a candle into my wards, and also from warm sunbeams streaming through my windows. How you choose to maintain your wards is up to you, but you must understand that regular maintenance is important to keep your wards strong and effective.

Ethical considerations

What if you share your home with a roommate? What if you rent your home and you’ll be moving out in another eight months? What about common walls shared with other dwellings? As practitioners, we must remain sensitive to the ethical implications of using magic to protect ourselves.

If your home is a shared space with family, significant others, roommates or other housemates, it is important to discuss your intentions with them before performing a warding ritual. It is entirely possible that housemates may feel uncomfortable with the idea of having the home warded. If this is your situation, it is important to respect their point of view. You may present your reasons why you believe warding the space would be beneficial, but I urge you against coercion or secretly warding the home anyway.

If you are unable to reach compromise with your housemates on warding the entire home, you may wish to ward your private space. I once warded my private bedroom in a college dormitory. If your bedroom is shared, you can also simply ward your own bed. This ritual can be made as large or as small as the practitioner requires.

If your home is rented and you plan to move out in the future, it is important to dispel and dismiss all wards and energies before you leave. The same is true if you are selling your house to new homeowners. Just as you wouldn’t ward a shared space without informed consent from other housemates, you also don’t want to leave behind any magical residue to pollute the environment for unsuspecting new residents. Information on how to dispel your wards follows in the next section.

Regardless of how you choose to bring your wards down, it is ethically imperative that you ground or dismiss any remaining energy residue so as to leave the space clean and fresh for the next residents. To help you accomplish this goal, you may wish to follow dismissal with a cleansing of the space like those mentioned previously in this article.

Common walls with other dwellings frequently occur in rental housing (apartments, duplexes, etc.) as well as in condominiums. It is mainly for this reason that I suggest walking the interior perimeter of apartments and condominiums. Unless you have your neighbors’ permission to perform rituals on their space, it is important that any ritual energies you work with remain contained inside your own dwelling.

In this case, it is important that your ward barriers stop where your walls do. Please take care that your ward barriers do not extrude into the living room or bedroom of your neighbors on the other side of your dining room wall. Similarly, be cautious that your wards do not spill outside your exterior walls into walkways or common areas around your dwelling.

Dismissing your wards

Whether you are leaving a rented dwelling, selling your house, or if you just need a fresh start, there are almost as many ways to tear down and dismiss your wards as there are ways to bring down a ritual circle. You may choose to circumambulate the space in a widdershins (counterclockwise) direction and dismiss the energies as you go. You can also sit stationary in the space and draw all the energies through you and ground them into the earth, leaving nothing behind.

A friend of mine dismisses his wards by element, much as many dismiss quarters after a ritual. Working in a widdershins fashion, he faces each of the cardinal directions in turn. He humbly thanks each element for its protection and dismisses it gratefully.

I prefer to stand somewhere in the center of the warded space and picture the energy barriers around me. I hold my arms straight up and reach with my hands as though I could touch the ceiling of the ward. I visualize ripping a small hole in the ward, and then gripping the edges of the hole, I bring my arms down to my sides, tearing the ward down around me and grounding the energies at my feet. You may also wish to follow dismissal with any of the cleansing rituals mentioned previously.

Make your wards your own

This ritual is fairly simple and straightforward. Try using it as a base upon which to build and create your own personal warding ritual. Remember to determine the extent of your ward ahead of time, and always consider the ethics of your particular situation. When gathering your materials, do not be afraid to use your favorite elemental representations, even if they are different from examples listed here.

Clearing your space can be as simple as smudging with sage, or as complex as performing the Lesser Banishing Ritual of the Pentagram, it’s up to you to decide which cleansing works best for you.

The incantation must serve its intended purpose, but it need not be as bare and simple as the one suggested here. Try expounding upon it, adding to it, making it rhyme, singing it, and even dancing if you wish.

Finally, it is imperative that your wards receive proper maintenance. I’ve offered examples of different ways to make certain your wards have adequate energy to perform their intended task. You may expound upon these examples in any manner that you find works well. The most important points of warding are covered here. How exactly you choose to carry them out and make them your own are entirely up to you.

Footnotes:
I am a member of the coven Goethe’s Garden, which has a listing here at WitchVox. My High Priest has used this ritual for many years, and he passed it on to me during my year-and-a-day dedication. I share it with you with his permission.

Spell to Stop a Person From Harming You

Spell to Stop a Person From Harming You

You will need:
White candle
Favorite incense
Brown paper
Lead pencil
Spoonful of used coffee grounds

Light a white candle and your favorite incense. Meditate a short while on the problem. Invoke the Spirits of Protection.

Take a piece of brown paper, like from a grocery bag, on it use a lead pencil to print and write the name of the offending person or people. If unknown people are involved, also print and write, ‘and all persons unknown that are causing harm to me!’

Cross off each line forcefully and say, forcefully:

I freeze name(s) to be bound by this spell,
unable to cause any more harm to (name(s)!
As I will, so mote it be!

Put a spoonful of used coffee grounds on the brown paper, fold it small, and place it in the freezer. Leave it until the problem is completely resolved. I wrap a rubber band, string, twist tie, or what have you, to keep the coffee grounds from falling out of the paper. You can also use a zip lock bag.

Be sure and burn the candle completely up. Don’t use that candle for a different purpose.

Full Moon Dream Drop Wishing Well

Pleine luneFull Moon Dream Drop Wishing Well

What You’ll Need:

-A jar or bowl, preferably clear
-Water
-4-6 small rocks or pebbles
-A permanent marker (Sharpie works best)

How to Conjure:

★Using the marker, write an aspiration on each rock, preferably one or two words each. For example: Abundance, happiness, health, new job, healthy relationship, new home, etc.

★Fill the jar or bowl with water. Take the jar and your wishing stones outside or by a moonlit window.

★Sit quietly for a moment (preferably in the grass or soil) and center yourself.

★One by one, carefully drop each wishing stone into the jar as you envision the assigned word coming to fruition. For example, if you’re casting for happiness, picture all the simple pleasures that make you happy as you release the stone into the water. If you’re casting for health, imagine yourself in tip-top shape, stretching and moving without any pain or illness.

★Once each wishing stone has been released into the water, hold the jar or bowl in your hands and say:

Water, Moon, Earth, and Night,
Bring forth the visions I’ve conjured in sight.
Water by ocean, by snow, and by rain,
This spell has been cast, these wishes attained.

★Leave the jar outside overnight or on a moonlit windowsill. In the morning, pull the stones from the water and allow to dry. Return the water to the earth. If desired, you may keep your wishing stones with you until your spell manifests. Otherwise, place them in a safe place and know the Goddess has heard your moon wishes!

Warding off the Evil Eye/Blocking Black Magic

Warding off the Evil Eye/Blocking Black Magic

What you need
rosemary, lavender, black pepper, cinnamon, ginger root, and 6 white candles and one black candle.

Directions

This spell should be cast during a new moon phase

First cast a magical circle (hail to the guardians)

Next face the north and sit and meditate

Get up and light your candles clockwise all except for the black.

Then when you have lighted your white candles, use a white candle to light the black candle. Then light the mixture of herbs and spices.
Say:

Whatever evil comes to me here
I cast you back, I have no fear
With the speed of wind and the dark of night
May all of your harboring take flight
With the swiftness of the sea
And all the power found in me
As I will so mote it be

Then in a loud voice say ”I cast you out” and blow out the black candle as hard as you can.

Let the mixture burn, then draw an eye on the candle and wrap it in a white cloth and bury it in your back yard.

To ward off evil

To ward off evil

To ward off evil that has advanced unwarranted, be it the work of others or devils, one must begin with a thorough bathing and cleansing of the body after the midnight, but before the rising of the morning’s sun.

Great care should be taken that this be done lest the spell fail.

At the dawn, having properly cleansed one’s body, and whilst without having dressed, one need stand in the center of a well-lit room and face the south.

Repeat the following invocation, once in each direction, turning from south to west, then north and finally east:

I call to Baëll, king of the evil horde
Leader of the six and sixty legions
Call up thine minions and order them down
That none should set against me this day or next
Bade them instead protect
Protect me from the evil
Protect me from those
Those of the evil will

When you have spoken this invocation in all four directions, going from south to west to north to east, remain facing to the east and repeat the following invocation:

Baëll, principal king of the power of the east
Hear mine words, for I bid thee no visit
Only that this thing be done

Immediately turn to face the south so that the spell might be cast and sealed.

The spell is done.

Protection Spell 2

Protection Spell 2

A spell of protection for a dwelling.

You will need Protection Oil or consecrated rainwater.

Light a single candle. Holding the bottle of Protection Oil or container of consecrated rainwater in your right hand, recite the following incantation:

Recite the following incantation:

Spirits of protection
Pass your power through me
Let it reside in this liquid
Let its infinite force take hold and remain
For with this consecrated liquid
I ask you watch over and fend off
All evil that dare make effort to intrude
In attempt to destroy the peace that rests within
This having been asked
Let it be so

This having been said, with your right index finger dipped in the oil or water, place an X mark on the frame of each window or door that leads to the outside of the dwelling.

As you make each mark, speak these words:

Let no evil enter

When a mark has been made on the frame of each opening, extinguish the candle.

The spell has been cast.

Lady A’s Specialty of the Day – Advanced Shielding & Grounding

Lady A’s Specialty of the Day – Advanced Shielding & Grounding

Advanced shielding and grounding. A major help in banishing spells or removing a binding.

I don’t think shielding should be that difficult. You will need a good imagination and visualize what I am going to tell you. I recommend making shields that surround you like a impenetrable bubble. They can be any color you want, be creative.? I’m not sure how this will work for you but there will be two layers of shielding. The outter layer will simply protect you and prevent any thing from entering, while destroying it with its energy. If something breaks in, the second layer will protect you and will also repeal the energy and bounce it back to whoever sent it.? Shield your thoughts as well as blocking others from harming or influencing you badly in any way. If you think that as the purpose of your shield, then it will do so. The shield of the mind is created by a strong and happy memory. Think of the happiest moment in your life and imagine your mind and body being strengthened by it and helping you in casting the banishing spell or removing a binding. When shielding, believe that you are the master of your body, will yourself to do the banishing spell, and know that no outside force can break your defenses or curse you ever again.? The shielding will take energy from you depending on how effective it is and how much energy you have. So rather than giving energy from yourself, do grounding. Imagine yourself being stabilized and the energy of nature coming to you from below your feet and making you able to stand your ground and strengthen you. This will help you.? When you finish grounding, thank the nature for helping you.?

Lady A’s Spell of the Day – Norse Spell to Ward off Night time Evil Spirits

Wiccan

Norse Spell to Ward Off Night time Evil Spirits

Ingredients:
Sea Salt
Spring water

This Norse spell is one of the simplest and most effective spells for warding off any negative night energy. It is quite effective for banishing night mares.

Many children and even adults are afraid of the dark. It’s spooky! Night is the traditional time when spirits and demons rule. During the Middle Ages people never went out after dark for fear of catching their death.

To ward off evil spirits or bad dreams, place a bowl of fresh spring water on the bed stand. Slowly add a pinch of sea salt and say,

“Evil spirits touch not me nor mine. Thy power I drain into this brine.”

You must use three pinches of salt in total and repeat the verse as you add each pinch. In the morning empty the bowl down the sink or toilet. Repeat as often as necessary.

SPELLTO REVERSE NEGATIVITY OR HEXES

SPELLTO REVERSE NEGATIVITY OR HEXES

Try this spell to reverse any negativity or hexes being sent your way. Visualize all blocks in your life-path being removed. Anoint a purple candle with Rosemary oil.

On a piece of white paper write the following in black ink:

All blocks are now removed.

Fold the paper three times. Light the candle and burn the paper in a bowl, ashtray, or any fireproof dish. Invoke the power of fire and its elemental spirits by repeating three times:

Firedrakes and salamanders,
aid me in my quest,
protect me from all evil forms,
turn back the negativity being sent.

After the third repetition say:

So mote it be.

A Warding for Your Home

A Warding for Your Home

The following is an easy warding ritual for your home or just one room.

You must admit that there are those who would use magic in unwise ways. A simple way I’ve found of dealing with such attempts is to ward a room you work in, or your home. It is similar to casting a circle except that it is as permanent as you want it to be. Be sure that you won’t be disturbed while casting the ward or you will have to start over. Nothing is required to do this but you may use any props necessary to make you most comfortable.

After ensuring you won’t be disturbed, ground and center (use any form you wish, this is a very adaptable ritual). Cast your circle, using the walls as the four Quarters (again use whatever method you are most comfortable with).

After the circle is cast you will do something similar to circle casting.
Invoke the Quarters again this time asking for protection of the area being warded against all negative influences from being able to ever enter the area involved. As you invoke each Quarter visualize a wall of energy completely covering the wall involved sealed by a floor to ceiling pentacle. On the wall/s with a door visualize a smaller version of the energy wall and pentacle so that entering and leaving will not affect the integrity of the working.

After each wall, the floor, and the ceiling are sealed be sure to cleanse the area to ensure that no negativity was trapped inside the room (any method is acceptable).

When done thank the Quarters for their help and dismiss them.

The Witches Spell for Sept. 17th – Spell To Keep Evil Away

Spell To Keep Evil Away

Items You Need:

Black candle
Salt
Water
Sage
Black Cord

This spell can be done as a general insurance policy and the black cord can be put on your altar or in a bag hung up over the entrance to your home. If you truly feel under attack, you can use a long cord and wrap it around your waist (under your clothes) or use a short one and tie it around one wrist. To make it extra powerful, use three thin cords and braid them together as you perform the spell.

Use as needed, but this spell is best casted under a New Moon in a formally cast circle. Place all the spell ingredients on an altar or table in front of you, light the candle, and do the actions one by one as you recite the spell.

(Sprinkle Salt on the Cord)

Avert, avert, avert, I say

With power of earth, block evil’s sway.

(Sprinkle Water on Cord)

Avert, avert, avert, I say

Water clear, wash evil away.

(Hold Cord Carefully Over Candle Flame)

Avert, avert, avert, I say

Fire’s heat it must obey.

(Light sage, and waft the smoke over the cord)

Avert, avert, avert, I say

Air protects me as I pray.

(If Planning To Wear Cord, Put It On Now, Otherwise Hold It in Your Hand)

Avert, avert, avert, I say

Safe I am and safe I’ll stay

Free of Past Pain Spell

Free of Past Pain Spell

Items You Will Need:

  • 1 green candle
  • 1 blue candle
  • 1 white candle
  • Paper
  • Pen/pencil
  • 1 black ribbon

The Spell:

Light the candles and write on the paper all the pains of your past that still bother you. Roll up the paper and tie it off with the black ribbon. Chant;

”The past has no power over me. I release the pain, I am free.”

Burn the paper and the ribbon over the flames of all three candles and before the fire reaches your hand cast the paper onto the ground. The moment you feel heat the paper should be cast down. Let the fire burn out on it’s own, but keep an eye on it to make sure it doesn’t spread to other things.   I suggest casting this spell on dirt or gravel so as not to start a wild fire.

Reversal spell

Reversal spell

Items You Will Need:

None, just focus on the spell.

The Spell:

First off, think about the last spell you cast, because this only works for your most recent spell, hex, curse, whatever you did.

Just think about the actual magic you performed, then think about how it went wrong. This should take no more than 20 seconds AT THE MOST. Now say this in a clear voice in these EXACT words without stuttering, mumbling, getting your tongue twisted, etc.:

My spell went wrong,
Please reverse it,
Don’t mess it up,
And don’t pervert it.

To Know the Child Within

To Know the Child Within

  • Green or blue candle to signify healing
  • An incense or essential oil which reminds you of -your childhood
  • Doll or poppet to signify the child you once were
  • Salt water
  • White cloth
  • Your altar, which could just be a table which you
  • dedicate to this purpose

The Spell:

Light your candle and the incense.

  •   Choose a particularly good childhood-memory.
  •   Hold the poppet in your arms and think -about the child you once were.
  •   Now treat the poppet as though it were a-child.
  •   Say:

I name you [use your own childhood name or

nickname]

  •   Tell it everything you would have liked to -hear as a child.
  •   Imagine that it talks to you and tells you how-it feels and what it wants.

A nurturing activity such as-cooking is also good. You will probably find after this-technique that you tend to dream somewhat vividly, as-you uncover some of the joys and hurts of childhood.

Breaking the Hold Someone has Over You

Breaking the Hold Someone has Over You

Items You Will Need:

A strong visual image of the link between you and the other person

A cleansing incense (such as frankincense, copal or rosemary)

The Spell:

Your image must be one that you feel you can relate to fully. Perhaps the easiest to see is in the form of a rope joining the two of you together.

  •   If you are good at seeing colour then the best to use is something similar to iridescent mother of pearl, because that contains all colours.
  •   You might see the image as a rigid bar, which would suggest that there is an inflexibility in the relationship between you which may require you to deal with the expectations of others.
  •   The incense is used to create an environment which is free from other influences; this is just between you and your perception of the link you have with the other person.
  •   Light your incense and sit quietly, considering carefully the link between you.
  •   Become aware of the flow of energy between you and gently withdraw your own energy, seeing it returning to you and being used for your own purposes rather than the other persons. (This may be enough to bring about a change in your relationship which has a satisfactory outcome for you.)
  •   Next think carefully about how the other person makes calls on your time and energy – whether these are physical, emotional or spiritual.
  •   Resolve that you will either not allow this to happen or will be more careful and sparing in your responses.
  •   You might develop a symbol for yourself which you can use when you feel you are being sucked in.
  •   Preferably use one which amuses you, since laughter is a potent tool. You could use the image of a knot being tied, a cork or a stopcock.
  •   If you decide that you no longer wish to be associated with the person, use a technique which signifies breaking the link. It will depend upon your own personality and that of the other person as to how you do this.
  •   Visualizing the link simply being cut may bring about a more powerful ending with tears and recriminations, whereas a gentle teasing out of the link may be slower but less painful.
  •   It is here that you must trust your own judgement with the thought that it must be done for the Greater Good. If therefore you feel that at least some links must be left in place you can do this, for instance if you would wish to know when the other person is in trouble.
  •   Finally see yourself walking away from the person, free of any bonds between you.
  •   Always ensure that you leave them with a blessing for their continuing health, wealth and happiness.
  •   Now you will only become involved with them at your own wish. You can see from the above that at all points you have a choice for your course of action. This is because each stage must be considered very carefully, and not done in anger. You must remain as dispassionate as you can and always remain true to your own principles.

Note: The spell is even more powerful if it is repeated on 3 consecutive days, with different day candles, and letting the Astral candles touch each other only at the third incantation on the third day. There is no need to write down the problems on the second or third day. However, the spell may be only performed once, in which case, the Astral candles should touch other at the third incantation. The ashes of the ”problem paper” can be gleefully flushed down the toilet.
