For Your Viewing Pleasure – Appalachia Mountain Roots Plants and Herbs

This is an interesting series by Donnie Law about the Appalachian Mountain people in the eastern USA. Included in this area is where Lady Abyss was from in Kentucky, USA. So, I always think of her when I am watching one of these videos.

Appalachia – From Wikipedia

This article is about the region in the United States. For other uses, see Appalachia (disambiguation).

Appalachia (/ˌæpəˈlæə, lə, lʃə/) is a cultural region in the Eastern United States that stretches from the Southern Tier of New York State to northern Alabama and Georgia.[1] While the Appalachian Mountains stretch from Belle Isle in Canada to Cheaha Mountain in Alabama, Appalachia typically refers only to the cultural region of the central and southern portions of the range, from the Blue Ridge Mountains of Virginia southwest to the Great Smoky Mountains. As of the 2010 United States Census, the region was home to approximately 25 million people.[2]

Since its recognition as a distinctive region in the late 19th century, Appalachia has been a source of enduring myths and distortions regarding the isolation, temperament, and behavior of its inhabitants. Early 20th century writers often engaged in yellow journalism focused on sensationalistic aspects of the region’s culture, such as moonshining and clan feuding, and often portrayed the region’s inhabitants as uneducated and prone to impulsive acts of violence. Sociological studies in the 1960s and 1970s helped to re-examine and dispel these stereotypes.[3]

While endowed with abundant natural resources, Appalachia has long struggled economically and been associated with poverty. In the early 20th century, large-scale logging and coal mining firms brought wage-paying jobs and modern amenities to Appalachia, but by the 1960s the region had failed to capitalize on any long-term benefits[4] from these two industries. Beginning in the 1930s, the federal government sought to alleviate poverty in the Appalachian region with a series of New Deal initiatives, such as the construction of dams to provide cheap electricity and the implementation of better farming practices. On March 9, 1965, the Appalachian Regional Commission[5] was created to further alleviate poverty in the region, mainly by diversifying the region’s economy and helping to provide better health care and educational opportunities to the region’s inhabitants. By 1990, Appalachia had largely joined the economic mainstream but still lagged behind the rest of the nation in most economic indicators.[3]

Gathering Guidelines

GUIDELINES FOR ALL GATHERINGS AND OPEN CHATS

No matter what spiritual path you follow or the type of Witchcraft you practice, except dark practitioners, are welcome to join us for our Open Chats, Esbat and Sabbat gatherings. The Sabbat gatherings celebrate both the Northern and Southern Hemispheres Sabbat. Look at the banner on the right side of the page for information on upcoming Magickal Hearts Coven’s events, they are all held via Skype. You can join us by audio or video call or just by listening and typing in your message or response.

The main guideline for when we are gathered on Skype or anywhere else for any reason is the Wicce Rede “An’ ye harm none, do what ye will.”

No one will be allowed to use foul, rude, racist, hurtful, hateful, or gender bashing language at any time during any type of gathering. Anyone not following this guideline will be kicked out of the gatherings immediately and blocked forever.

This is not a dating site! If you attempt to hook up with someone or use sexually suggestive language towards anyone else at the gathering, you will be kicked out and blocked forever.

During Esbat and Sabbat gatherings all conversations will cease 1 minute before the sacred circle is cast until the sacred circle has been closed.

During Esbat and Sabbat gatherings no one may leave the circle without permission from the person leading it. If you leave the sacred circle for any reason, except if the electronic device you are using to attend disconnects you, we ask that you do not reenter the sacred circle.

When attending a Sabbat gathering, we ask that you stay for both hemispheres’ rituals.

Once the circle starts all socializing and/or comments about the rituals must stop unless you see the word “EVERYONE” in the ritual.  You will get one warning if you break this guideline. If you break it a second time you will be asked to and expected to leave the gathering immediately. There will be no exceptions to this guideline as it is rude to the person or persons leading the ritual (s). If you do not leave you will be taken out of the gathering by Lady Beltane. If this happens again at another gathering you will be permanently banned for attending any Magickal Hearts Coven Gatherings, there are no exceptions to this.

No one should enter or leave the chat room from the time the sacred circle is cast until the sacred circle is closed. To enter or leave the chat room (computer knocking you out of the chat room during this time is the only exception for re-entering the circle) during this time breaks the circle and whoever is leading the circle needs to take their time and energy to close it up again.

All electronics in the room you are in during the gathering should be shut off except for the device you are using to access the gathering. As the energy raised during the circle can possibly do minor or major damage to other devices.

Everyone attending an Esbat and/or Sabbat gathering is welcome to stay after the circle is done to visit with the others and/or offer other ideas for the ritual performed at that gathering.

These are simple guidelines and show courtesy to all people attending the gatherings and those leading them. Not obeying all the guidelines could get you banned from all Magickal Hearts Coven gatherings and open chats for life.

Any questions about the guidelines and/or anything to do with Magickal Hearts Coven, the Open Chats, Witches of The Craft’s School of Witchcraft, Esbat and/or Sabbat gatherings can be emailed to Lady Beltane at ladybeltane@aol.com. A Gorgeous Ritual for Tonight’s Magic

  1. Light any of the following scents/incenses: Clove, Eucalyptus, Lilac, Musk seed, Nutmeg, Sage, Sandalwood. These herbs and oils help activate the psychic nature of tonight’s Moon in Pisces.
  2. Invoke the open-minded energy of the Fish with this chant:
“Like the stars above, I’m in a constant and fluid movement.
I explore and develop my spirituality like a smart and diligent student”.
  3. Take a piece of paper. Write in clear letters your deepest wish. Don’t overthink. Instead, just start writing. Visualize your idea of a perfect future and write it down in the present tense. The First Quarter Moon is a time of abundance and growth, so think BIG! Be clear and precise, whether it’s a love request, a money target, or just a dream to work towards.
  4. Light a white candle on your altar. Place it next to your petition and leave it there.
  5. Next to your candle, place a Black Tourmaline, Sapphire, or Amethyst. These crystals are great for Saturdays, they will absorb the energy of tonight’s moon and release it gently during the next few days.
  6. Meditate for a while. Then take the paper and paste it in your diary, Book of Mirrors, or (optionally) hide it in a secret place.

Celebrating Legends, Folklore and Spirituality 365 Days a Year for January 7 – Saint Distaff’s Day

January 7

Saint Distaff’s Day

In southern England, Saint Distaff’s Day was when work began again after the Christmas holiday. Saint Distaff’s Day was not a saint’s day at all, but rather a tongue-in-check commemoration of the day on which women returned to their distaffs of unspun wool.
