Pearls are associated with purity, fidelity and integrity and are often worn by brides on their wedding day. Pearl jewelry is the gift given to celebrate 1st, 3rd and 30th wedding anniversaries.

Pearls are the only organic birthstone (derived from a living organism) and are formed inside mollusks around a foreign particle. Cultured pearls are simply farmed pearls, where a foreign particle has been introduced deliberately into the mollusk, causing a pearl to form.

Watch the short, informative videos below highlighting the history, symbolism and properties of the other June birthstones – Alexandrite and Moonstone.

The June Birthstone Color is Light Purple

There are many different types of Moonstone which can vary from transparent, through white, green, yellow-brown, grey to almost black with a shimmering effect of blue, silver or white.

High quality Moonstone is found in Myanmar and Sri Lanka, which is also the main producer of this gemstone globally. Other deposits are found in Brazil, Mexico and the USA (Americas), Madagascar and Tanzania (Africa), India (Asia) and Norway and Switzerland (Europe).

June Birth Flowers – Rose and Honeysuckle click here for more information from almanac.com

The rose and the honeysuckle, two flowers reaching their peak during the sixth month of the year, have long been associated with June. Learn more about roses and honeysuckles in the garden—and their surprising symbolism in our lives.

What Are the June Birth Flowers?

Roses are one of the most recognizable flowers, often given as a sign of affection due to the fact that it’s long been a symbol of love.

The honeysuckle, with its tubular flowers, are magnets for hummingbirds and represents happiness and positive energy.

Rose Meanings and Symbolism

The rose has long been a symbol of love, beauty, and affection. And each color rose holds a different meaning. A red rose means ‘I love you’ and is a sign of romance; pink represents happiness and admiration; a white rose symbolizes innocence and purity; orange means desire and excitement; yellow represents cheer and happiness, although some folklore considered it to mean jealousy. A red and white rose paired together has come to symbolize unity.

The Romans viewed roses as a representation of death and rebirth, often planting them at the graves of loved ones.

Honeysuckle Meanings and Symbolism

The name honeysuckle comes from the Middle English word honeysouke, which translated to “honey suck.” It is believed the name came from the ability to suck the sweet nectar straight from the flowers once picked.

The honeysuckle traditionally symbolized happiness and affection for a new love. It has also been known to represent nostalgia for first loves or old flames.

Honeysuckles were commonly planted near homes to create a feeling of nostalgia and to honor those who have died. It is also meant to bring happiness and positive energy into your life. According to other legends, planting a honeysuckle near the home would keep away negativity and protect you from evil spirits.

Watch the short, informative videos below highlighting the history, symbolism and properties of Emeralds and Agate.

The May Birthstone Color is Green

May’s birthstone color of green symbolizes the renewal of life in Spring, which starts in May in the northern hemisphere. The birthstone color comes from May’s birthstone Emerald, one of the four precious gemstones and one of the rarest, most valuable gems.

Emeralds are a variety of the mineral beryl and the vivid green color comes from trace elements of chromium or vanadium. Emerald crystals form over millions of years and although they can form under different geological conditions, the combination of the necessary elements occurring in the same place is very rare, hence Emeralds are only found in a few locations.

Emeralds typically contain characteristic inclusions which can be traced back to the country and even the mine of origin. Colombia is world renown for Emeralds and is the largest single source worldwide. Other primary locations are Zambia, Brazil and Zimbabwe and more recently Ethiopia.

Emeralds are usually oiled to enhance the color and appearance of the stone and sometimes to mask the inclusions. May birthstone jewelry set with Emerald gemstones is a meaningful gift for special birthdays in May.

The May Birth Flowers are Lily of the Valley and Hawthorn

May Birth Flower: Lily of the Valley

The primary birthday flower of May is Lily of the Valley, a scented woodland plant that blooms in spring.

The first part of the scientific name Convallaria majalis means ‘in the valley’, referring to the European wooded valleys where the plant grows naturally, and the second part means ‘belonging to’ or ‘of May’.

The Lily of the Valley has been used as a floral emblem in Yugoslavia, Finland and Norway; and it has become customary to give this flower as a symbol of spring on May Day in France.

May Birth Flower: Hawthorn

The second flower for May is the Hawthorn, a common shrub to small tree that also produces fragrant white flowers in the spring, known as the May-tree in some countries.

The red edible fruit known as ‘haws’ and the thorny branches have given rise to other common names such as quickthorn, whitethorn, thornapple, and hawberry.

Hawthorns feature in many cultural customs across Europe and Britain.

The language of flowers introduced in Victorian times says that the Hawthorn and Lily of the Valley symbolize happiness, humility and sweetness.

Besides being a meaningful gift for a special April birthday, Diamond jewelry is the also given to celebrate 10th, 60th and 75th wedding anniversaries.

Watch the short, informative videos below highlighting the history, symbolism and properties of Diamonds and Quartz.

April Birthstone Color: Clear or White

The April birthstone color is clear or white representing the transparency of diamonds. Diamond is made up entirely of carbon and is the hardest natural material known to man. In fact the name ‘diamond’ comes from Greek ‘adamas’ meaning invincible, possibly indicating the superior hardness of diamonds.

Due to the many issues around diamond mining and illegal trading, consumers must ensure any diamonds they purchase are certified as ‘conflict free’. Choose jewelers that track diamonds back to their source, ideally to mines that are both ethically and environmentally responsible.

In recent years there has been a strong acceptance of lab grown diamonds that are just as spectacular, are easily traceable and circumvent the many humanitarian and environmental issues around mining.

Jewelry with fancy colored diamonds or black diamonds is a modern, trendy alternative to the conventional clear diamond. Colors of fancy diamonds include yellow, blue, green, brown, pink, red, grey and black.

Alternative April Birthstone: Quartz

The alternative birthstones for April are any clear or white gemstones such as clear quartz, white sapphires and white topaz. April birthstone jewelry is usually set with these alternative gemstones as diamonds are traditionally reserved for engagement rings

Quartz is one of the most abundant minerals and is found on all continents ranging from large crystals formed in boulders to small sand grains and even smaller microscopic forms. The Greek name “krustallos” means “ice” as it was once thought that colorless quartz was formed by ice turning into rock. Clear quartz is also known as rock crystal or ice crystal.

Besides the clear or transparent variety, quartz occurs in many colors known by different names, such as amethyst (purple), citrine (yellow) and aventurine (green). Other colored varieties include milky quartz (cream or white), rose quartz (pink), brown quartz, smoky quartz (grey) and even black opaque quartz.

Clear quartz birthstone jewelry is a popular gift for April birthdays.

March Birthstone Color and Flower and more March Birthday Symbols

From monthlybirthstones.com

The March Birthstone is Aquamarine

The birthstone for March is Aquamarine and thus the March birthstone color is light blue, the primary shade of Aquamarine.

The alternative March gemstone is earthy Bloodstone and both gems are listed as official March birthstones.

Aquamarine is one of the Zodiac birthstones for Pisces (Feb 20 – Mar 20), and Bloodstone is one of the zodiac birthstones for both Pisces and Aries (Mar 21 – Apr 19) star signs. Other birthday symbols include the March birth flower which is the Daffodil.

The word ‘Aquamarine’ means ‘water of the sea’ in Latin and this gemstone is associated with many legends of sailors. It also aptly reflects the tranquil blue-greens of the ocean, symbolizing calm and peace.

Besides being a meaningful March birthday gift, Aquamarine jewelry is also given to celebrate a 19th wedding anniversary.

Watch the short, informative videos below highlighting the history, symbolism and properties of this beautiful gemstone.

March Birthstone Color: Light Blue

The birthstone color for March is light blue and comes from March’s birthstone Aquamarine. Aquamarine crystals are generally very pale in color to almost transparent and are rarely found naturally in darker blue shades. Light blue is also considered the Pisces birthstone color for Pisceans born in March.

The Aquamarine mineral is a type of beryl and is formed over millions of years when water became trapped in rock cavities during geological processes. The six main varieties of beryl are aquamarine (blue-green), emerald (green), morganite (pink), red beryl (red), heliodor (yellow) and maxixe (deep blue).

Most Aquamarine comes from the Minas Gerais region in Brazil but it is also mined in Afghanistan and Pakistan in Asia; and Madagascar, Mozambique, Nigeria and Zambia in Africa. Many trade names for the different colors of Aquamarine are based on the country where that color was first discovered eg. Brazil Aquamarine, Madagascar Aquamarine.

One of the largest aquamarine crystals of over 10 000 carats was found in Brazil in the 1980s, and is called Dom Pedro after the Brazilian emperors. A German gemstone artist cut the crystal into a brilliant light reflecting obelisk which is now housed in the Smithsonian Museum.

Often Aquamarine is heat treated to remove impurities and improve its clear blue color, a widely accepted practice in the jewelry trade. If very pale Aquamarine is irradiated to darken the blue color, it is then known as blue beryl. The attractive blue shades of Aquamarine are popular in gemstone jewelry and in particular March birthstone jewelry.

Alternative March Birthstone: Bloodstone

Bloodstone is a soft stone usually carved into cabochons and various shapes by artisans, or simply set as polished pendants highlighting the striking colors in jewelry for March birthdays.
