Sunday

Ruler: Sun

Colors: Gold or yellow

Power Hours: Sunrise and sunset.

Key Words: Love, happiness, health, wealth

It is easy to spot the ruler of this day by its name. Sunday is the day of the sun. Community work, volunteer services, exercise, outdoor sports, buying, selling, speculating, meeting people, anything involving groups, running fairs and raffles, growing crops and taking care of all health matters fall under the influence of the Sun. With all this activity and the brightness of the sun, it’s easy to see why the child that is born on the Sabbath day is bonny and blithe, and good and gay.

Michael is the primary angel of Sunday but each hour of this day also has it’s secondary angel. These angels are Michael (first hour), Anael (second hour), Raphael (third hour), Gabril (fourth hour), Cassiel (fifth hour), Sachiel (sixth hour), Samael (seventh hour), Michael (eighth hour), Anael (ninth hour), Raphael (tenth hour), Gabriel (eleventh hour), and Cassiel twelfth hour). Notice some of the angels do double duty this day.

On Sundays, (unless you are invoking a specific angelic energy) the hour of sunrise will be the most powerful time to work, especially if you want to infuse energy into your work. Sunset is the second best time and is favored when you need to calm down a situation. Check the local newspaper, astrological calendar, or almanac to determine your local sunrise.

Your Charm for June 29th is Necklace of Charms

Your Charm for Today

Necklace of Charms

Today’s Meaning:
What you need in this aspect is a bit of understanding. You can find happiness in abundance if you understand and accept the differences of those with whom you share your life within this aspect.

General Description:
This is an Egyptian group of amulets. The centre ornament is the Lotus, from which hangs the emblem of Millions of years — Thou shalt never perish, never, never come to an end. The Lotus bestowed upon the wearer Light and Understanding, the gifts of the god Ra, their sun god, king of gods and of men. The Fish, the symbol of the Egyptian goddess who controlled the rising of the Nile brought Abundance and Riches. The other pendant is in the form of a lock of hair, the meaning of which is obscure.

THE LAWS OF MAGIC

THE LAWS OF MAGIC

The Laws of Magic are not legislative laws, but, like those of physics or
musical harmony, are actually fairly practical observations that have been
accumulated over thousands of years. These laws describe the way magic seems to behave.  Most of these laws will make sense to you (I hope), and even the more
obscure ones should make some sense to you, but if they don’t, ignore them, or
send me some e-mail, and I will try to explain.

The LAW OF KNOWLEDGE: This is probably the most widely used law, and probably encompasses all the others in some way.  The basis of this law is that
understanding brings control.  The more that is known about a subject, the
easier it is to exercise control over it.  Knowledge is power.

The LAW OF SELF-KNOWLEDGE: An obvious derivative of the LAW OF KNOWLEDGE, this law carries additional connotations, as a mage who does not have knowledge of himself does not have knowledge (and therefore control) of his own magic.  This law is one of the reason’s “evil” mages are very rare – a dedication to “evil for evil’s sake” is usually do to a lack of introspection and awareness of oneself.  It is difficult to do harm to others when you understand fully what that kind of harm would do to you.  Know thyself.

The LAW OF CAUSE AND EFFECT: A simple scientific understanding – if exactly the same actions are done under exactly the same conditions, they will be associated with exactly the same results. Magicians have at least as much belief in cause and effect as modern physicists do, they just realize that a good ritual, like a good theatrical performance or a good bread recipe, isn’t always predictable. In truth, a spell involves so many variables, that controlling or even
understanding them all is impossible.  The key to magical success is learning
which variables are the most important, and how to keep them constant.  Control
over the variables is icing on the cake.

The LAW OF SYNCHRONICITY: Two or more events happening at the same
time are likely to have more in common than the merely temporal. Very few events ever happen in isolation from other events.  There is no such thing as a mere coincidence.

The LAW OF ASSOCIATION: If any two pattern have elements in common, the patterns interact “through” those common elements, and control of one pattern facilitates control of the other(s) depending (among other factors) upon the number of common elements involved.  This is a very important law, up there with the LAW OF KNOWLEDGE.

The LAW OF SIMILARITY: Having an accurate physical or mental represent-tion of something facilitates control over it.  This one is fairly obvious in it’s usage
– having a model, picture, or other representation of your target (like a voodoo
doll) gives you power to effect the target.  Look alikes are alike.

The LAW OF CONTAGION: Objects or beings in physical contact with each other continue to interact after separation.  Everyone you have ever touched has a magical link with you, though it is probably pretty weak unless the contact was
intense and/or prolonged or repeated frequently.  Magical power is contagious.
Naturally, having a part of someone’s body (nails, hair, spit, etc.) gives the
best contagion link.

The LAW OF NAMES: Knowing the complete and TRUE name of an object, being, or process gives one complete control over it.  This works because a name is a definition (yes, even “Harold”, “Marie”, “Kunte”, and “Jasmine” were at one
time) as well as a contagion link, and an association (if you call something the
same name over and over, that name becomes associated with the thing).  This
also works, because knowing the complete and true name of something or someone means that you have achieved a complete understanding of  it’s or their nature. This is why, in most pre-industrial cultures, people are given “secret names”, as well as “public names”, and why the sharing of a secret name is such an act of  trust – because the secret name is considered to be very close to, if not
identical with, the person’s true name.

The LAW OF WORDS OF POWER: There exist certain words that are able to alter the internal and external realities of those uttering them, and the power may rest in the very sounds of the words as much as their meanings.  Many of such words are names, though the meanings may have been lost or forgotten.  Very many magical tools require words to be inscribed upon them and/or said over them during their construction and/or use.

The LAW OF PERSONIFICATION: Any phenomenon may be considered to be
alive and to have a personality – that is, to “be” an entity or being.  Anything
can be a person.  Most weather mages personify the winds and the clouds, for
example, and thus find focusing their magic on the atmosphere much easier to do.

The LAW OF INVOCATION: It is possible to establish internal communication with entities from either inside or outside oneself, said entities seeming to be
inside of oneself during the communication process.

The LAW OF EVOCATION: It is possible to establish external communication with entities from either inside or outside oneself, said entities seeming to be
outside oneself during the communication process.

The LAW OF IDENTIFICATION: It is possible through maximum association between elements of oneself and those of another being to actually become that being, to the point of sharing it’s knowledge and wielding it’s power.  This is the law that controls most lengthy or permanent possession phenomena.

The LAW OF PERSONAL UNIVERSES: Every sentient being lives in and quite possibly creates a unique universe which can never be 100% identical to that lived in by another.  So called “reality” is in fact a matter of consensus opinions.  This law is nowhere near as obvious as the other laws in it’s applications, but if
you can figure some out, you can use it.

The LAW OF INFINITE UNIVERSES: The total number of universes into which all possible combinations of existing phenomena could be organized is infinite.
Anything is possible, though some things are more probable than others.  You
might consider this to refer to the “alternate probability worlds” of science
fiction, but it also has a much wider application.

The LAW OF PRAGMATISM: If a pattern of belief or behavior enables a being to
survive and to accomplish chosen goals, then that belief or behavior is “true”
or “real” or “sensible”.  If it works, it’s true.  Another rather obscure law,
but it does have some very useful applications.

The LAW OF TRUE FALSEHOODS: It is possible for a concept or act to violate the truth patterns of a given personal universe and still be “true”, provided that
it “works” in a specific situation.  If  it’s a paradox, it’s still probably
true.  This law is basically useless, except to justify use of the above three
laws without screwing things up in your version of the real world.

The LAW OF SYNTHESIS: The synthesis of two or more “opposing” patterns of data will produce a new pattern that will be truer than either of the first two were. That is, it will be applicable to more levels of reality, and this new pattern
may not be a compromise, but may be something rather new indeed.

The LAW OF POLARITY: Any pattern of data can be split into (at least) two
“opposing” characteristics, and each will contain the essence of the other
within itself.

The LAW OF OPPOSITES: A sub-law of POLARITY.  The “opposite” of a pattern
contains information about that pattern, by providing information on what the
pattern is not.  Thus, control over a pattern’s opposite (or close to it’s
opposite) facilitates control over the pattern itself.  (Note that this one I
alone take the blame for, as it is my own extension of POLARITY and SIMILARITY)

The LAW OF DYNAMIC BALANCE: To survive, let alone to become powerful, one must keep every aspect of one’s universe in a state of dynamic balance with every other aspect.  Extremism is dangerous, as the extreme being becomes so
associated with the extreme aspect, that they lose the ability to avoid that
aspect at all.  This is another reason “evil” mages are rare, as continuous
association with pain or death will cause a mage pain or death, ending the
mage’s ability to continue actively with “evil”.  This is also why “good” mages,
especially healers, tend to live a long time.

The LAW OF PERVERSITY: Sometimes known as Murphy’s Law.  If  anything can go wrong, it will, and in the most annoying manner possible.  Magical associations sometimes operate in the reverse of what was desired, and meaningful coincidences are just as likely to be unpleasant as pleasant.  Even if nothing can go wrong, some element of the universe may change so that things will go wrong anyway.  Whether we like it or not, the gods (or fates, or what have you) do have a sense of humor.  Emotionally healthy mages have less problems with this law than others do, as the mages own subconscious mind is probably a major perpetrator of this law.

The LAW OF UNITY: Every phenomena in existence is linked directly or indirectly to every other one, past, present, or future. Perceived separations between  phenomena are based on incomplete sensing and/or understanding.

Daily OM for January 13th – Making Life Yours

Making Life Yours
Perception

by Madisyn Taylor

A simple shift in attitude can help us recognize the hidden potential for fulfillment in every event.

There is no secret recipe for happiness and contentment. The individuals who move through life joyously have not necessarily been blessed with lives of abundance, love, success, and prosperity. Such people have, however, been blessed with the ability to take the circumstances they’ve been handed and make them into something great. Our individual realities are colored by perception—delight and despair come from within rather than without. Situations we regard as fortuitous please us while situations we judge inauspicious cause us no end of grief. Yet if we can look at all we have accomplished without dwelling on our perceived misfortune and make each new circumstance our own, the world as a whole becomes a brighter place. A simple shift in attitude can help us recognize and unearth the hidden potential for personal and outer world fulfillment in every event, every relationship, every duty, and every setback.

The universe is often an unpredictable and chaotic place, and the human tendency is to focus on the negative and assume the positive will care for itself. But life can be no more or no less than what you make of it. If you are working in a job you dislike, you can concentrate on the positive aspects of the position and approach your work with gusto. What can you do with this job that can turn it around so you do love it. When faced with the prospect of undertaking a task you fear, you can view it as an opportunity to discover what you are truly capable of doing. Similarly, unexpected events, when viewed as surprises, can add flavor to your existence. By choosing to love life no matter what crosses your path, you can create an atmosphere of jubilance that is wonderfully infectious. A change in perspective is all it takes to change your world, but you must be willing to adopt an optimistic, hopeful mind-set.

To make a conscious decision to be happy is not enough. You must learn to observe life’s complexities through the eyes of a child seeing everything for the first time. You must furthermore divest yourself of preconceived notions of what is good and what is bad so that you can appreciate the rich insights concealed in each stage of your life’s journey. And you must strive to discover the dual joys of wanting what you have. As you gradually shift your perspective, your existence will be imbued with happiness and contentment that will remain with you forever.

Your Daily Horoscopes for Monday, Dec. 30th

Events take a surprising turn today by throwing us a curve ball. Although a shocking Sun-Uranus square is disruptive, our willingness to change plans on a moment’s notice can minimize any negative consequences. Nevertheless, a provocative Mars-Pluto square later in the day raises extreme feelings of fierce passion or intense power struggles. Moderation is elusive and emotions run rampant as the grandiose Sagittarius Moon pushes us over the top.

Aries Horoscope

(Mar 21 – Apr 19)

You could take yourself too seriously today and may go too far trying to prove yourself to someone. You’re ready to fight for your beliefs, but you need to chill out a bit because your passions are blown out of proportion now, especially if you bump into resistance. Even if it seems like others are purposefully blocking your way, it’s smarter to work with the energy instead of attempting to overpower it. But don’t succumb to fear; you can reach your destination by following the high road instead.

Taurus Horoscope

(Apr 20 – May 20)

Managing your erratic energy is quite a challenge today, but it should get easier as you gain awareness about what’s really happening. A minor run-in with someone whose opinions are different from yours may stir memories of an unpleasant situation. Acknowledge your feelings; a molehill can turn into a volatile volcano if you try to bury them. There’s no reason to let the pressure reach a critical point. Avoid losing your temper by gently sharing what’s on your mind without blaming anyone else in the process.

Gemini Horoscope

(May 21 – Jun 20)

You won’t be happy if your friends assume that you will go along with anything they want to do today. You may feel that they are being too pushy and you really don’t appreciate it. You might reach a point where you have no choice but to respond honestly, even if you don’t want to make such a big deal about what’s going on. But rather than instigating a conflict through direct confrontation, do your best to move through an uncomfortable situation by talking about your own concerns. Taking responsibility for your emotions is healthier than playing the role of a victim.

Cancer Horoscope

(Jun 21 – Jul 22)

Trying to disappear into the shadows isn’t a sensible strategy today; something has to be done now and it’s up to you to do it. Although you may not want to take charge, it might be necessary if no one else steps up to the plate. Remember, if you take issue with someone’s performance, saying it out loud can prevent your anger from hardening into resentment. Keeping your feelings flowing is your key to happiness.

Leo Horoscope

(Jul 23 – Aug 22)

You like to play the part of the good guy and are usually happy to focus your intentions on the best possible outcome. You may truly believe your optimistic approach is the most intelligent strategy now, but someone might think you’re simply avoiding the facts. Ironically, you both could be right. However, if you try to prove your superiority today, everyone ends up losing. Concentrate your efforts on creating common ground instead of tearing each other apart.

Virgo Horoscope

(Aug 23 – Sep 22)

A lighthearted conversation may unexpectedly turn into a very serious argument today. What bothers you most is if someone acts like a know-it-all, bending the truth for apparently selfish purposes. You don’t have any tolerance for people who spout facts that are blatantly false. However, a fight to the finish could do much more harm than good. Demonstrate your common sense and wait until everyone’s emotions have settled down before continuing the discussion.

Libra Horoscope

(Sep 23 – Oct 22)

Everywhere you turn today people seem to be on edge and you don’t like the confrontational atmosphere. You might be tempted to blame someone else because you know that your intentions are honorable. Unfortunately, the current circumstances are more complicated than you think; your suppressed anger could be coming back at you in a projected form. Accept full responsibility for your feelings, even the most negative ones. This simple act of courage may be sufficient to begin calming the disruptive energy.

Scorpio Horoscope

(Oct 23 – Nov 21)

If you haven’t been following a healthy exercise regimen, it’s time to put one into motion because your planetary rulers, muscleman Mars and formidable Pluto, cross paths to provoke powerful action. Although you might feel strong emotions bubbling upward into your awareness, this edge of intensity can be softened through physical exertion. Channeling your energy positively by working out at the gym or dancing all night long helps to moderate your extreme point of view.

Sagittarius Horoscope

(Nov 22 – Dec 21)

Unfortunately, previous obligations may require you to reconsider your plans today. But you might not be happy when you realize that a social event will still go on, even without your attendance. Although you could be tempted to express your annoyance by criticizing others, shifting the focus away from you isn’t a useful strategy to get what you want. This tricky situation is a test of your maturity, so accept the current circumstances that can’t be altered and rise to the challenge by improving your attitude.

Capricorn Horoscope

(Dec 22 – Jan 19)

If you lose your temper today it will become more difficult to obtain the results you seek. Unfortunately, you may be frustrated because satisfaction doesn’t seem to be forthcoming now, and you have run out of patience. Nevertheless, an explosive emotional outbreak could turn your allies against you when you need them the most. Being honest and expressing exactly what you’re thinking might be the right thing to do, yet compassionate behavior conveys your message more kindly.

Aquarius Horoscope

(Jan 20 – Feb 18)

You might think you’re too busy to stop and process your feelings today. Unfortunately, this denial could take you down a bumpy path, causing unexpressed emotions to simmer beneath your awareness and turn a healthy reaction sour. Negative thoughts may be lurking in the shadows, so take your time and talk about your current frustrations. Thankfully, you can avoid a serious conflict if you adopt a proactive approach based on honoring your integrity and establishing clear channels of communication.

Pisces Horoscope

(Feb 19 – Mar 20)

You are most often comfortable when feeling your way through a complex interpersonal landscape without a rational anchor. However, you might stubbornly choose to resist all forms of emotional engagement today. You realize that there are still issues left unresolved, and that it’s easier to avoid them than to confront the underlying causes. Unfortunately, there may be no way to sidestep the truth. Being honest now is the key to receiving the support you want later on.

The Witches Magick For December 9th – Three-Stone Home Magick

The Witches Magick For December 9th

Three-Stone Home Magick

Cast this spell to bring more harmony and happiness into your home by way of benevolent faeries.

You will need three small white stones you find in nature.

At 6:07 p.m., draw a magick circle and call in the elements. Hold each of the three stones in your power hand, one at a time, and face your altar. Take a deep, complete breath in and out. Merge with the faeries and charge each of the stones by saying:

“Blessed be, blessed three moon and star stones,
Please bring harmony and happiness to my home.”

Now, slowly spin clockwise three times. When you are done spinning say:

“Helpful, bright, and friendly faeries
Please bring harmony and happiness to my home
Ayea, Ayea, Ayea, blessed fae! So Be It!

Sit or stand quietly in the middle of your circle and imagine the helpful powers of the earth, air, fire, and water faeries bringing more harmony and joyful happiness to your home forever and a day. Do this for at least fifteen minutes, then offer the stones to the faeries by placing them gently on the ground beneath a flower, bush or tree. As you do, repeat with each stone:

Blessed be, blessed three moon and star stones
Please bring harmony and happiness to my home.

Daily Motivator for November 13th – Beautiful reality

Beautiful reality

Act not out of judgment, but out of love. Live not from a position of fear,  but from a perspective of joy.

Let go of the need to prove how good you are. Live in such a way that real  goodness, joy and generosity flow naturally from all you do.

Instead of seeking to gain more advantage, discover new ways to give more  value. Instead of worrying about what might be, live the immense treasure of  what already is.

Don’t waste your time looking for happiness in this thing or that. Let  happiness always find you right where you are, doing whatever you are doing.

See life not as a contest where some must lose in order for others to win.  See it as an opportunity to lift yourself higher by lifting many, many others  through your unique gifts.

Let go of the illusion that you must struggle. And let in the beautiful  reality of how very good life can be.

The Daily Motivator for Oct. 8th – Looking happy and being happy

Looking happy and being happy

Happiness is not based on the way you appear. Happiness is an authentic state  of being that you can choose.

When you are truly happy, people around you will no doubt see it. Yet there’s  so much more to being happy than merely looking happy.

If you’re striving to impress others with how happy you are, you’re not happy  at all. Let go of the striving and the needs, and allow happiness.

You can be happy doing nothing. You can be happy doing anything.

Happiness does not come from the situation the person is in. Happiness comes  from the person who is in the situation.

Be the person to allow happiness. And you can experience it at any and every  time and place.

Your Charm for October 7th is The Greek Vowels

Your Charm for Today

Today’s Meaning:

This aspect will be influenced by a sudden strong stroke of good fortune. This good fortune will be unpredictable and will last only a short time. It will bring with it good health, happiness and success.

General Description:

This talisman was a great favorite in olden times, and was composed of the Seven Vowels of the Greek Alphabet. The desired favours were supposed to be granted upon the correct utterance of the forty-nine different sounds of the Seven Vowels, each vowel having seven distinct methods of expression. Of the many benefits supposed to be conferred were – good health, happiness, wisdom, fortune, foresight, success in all undertakings, complete protection from moral, as well as physical ills, and control over the powers of darkness. The ancients thought that there was an affinity between the seven vowels and the seven planets which they believed kept this earth in existence.

Daily Motivator for January 1 – New, improved year

Create a new, improved year by going through it with a new, improved outlook  on life. Make this a great year by choosing an attitude that reflects your own  unique greatness.

In the year ahead you’ll encounter many obstacles, and yet there’s one  powerful obstacle you don’t ever have to deal with again. That obstacle, the one  you can get rid of for good, is your own negative attitude.

The Daily Motivator

Wishing You A Very Blessed Day On This Last Monday Of 2012!

Good Morning my dear friends & family! Well can you believe it this year is almost over. In a few hours, it will be 2013.  As I sit here I pondered is it a good idea to even look back on 2012? We have witnessed terrible events, even events that have absolutely horrified us. War, violence, killings will this be the legacy of 2012? There had to be moments of happiness and peace sometime during the year. But those moments don’t stand out in our mind. Perhaps it is because with the violence and killings a part of our hearts are ripped out. Some of the violence rips us to our very souls.

I will be the first to admit the violence the world has experienced this year has cut all the way to my soul.  Am I a better person for it? I don’t know. I know I am much more somber than I use to be. I know I don’t take any minute in the day for granted. I grab a hold of those minutes and squeeze them for everything I can get out of them. I believe I lost my innocence this year. Sounds funny coming for an older person, I am not really that old. But it still sounds strange. I believe I have emerged a new individual, a new Witch. I have a new determination. I want to fight back. I no longer want to stand on the sidelines and idly watch, I want to fight. I want to fight for peace, for all the wars to end, for all the violence to stop, I want to fight for a world that is fit for my grandchildren to live in. I believe the most of you do too.

It is time we all get off our brooms and do what we are suppose to do, help & better mankind and this world. This year we are going to make an effort to actually make a change in this world of ours. I have thought about it and thought about it, here is what I have come up with but I need your help for it to work. It is nothing complicated, in fact it is what we do best, chanting and releasing energy. Is that so hard? Here’s the plan, if you are with me:

Every month (starting in January 2013) at the time of the Full Moon, we will gather as one. How’s that you say? Our spirits can unite no matter where we are. They can come together as one. I will set a time, probably around midnight. I know quite a few work so it might be earlier, the more that participate the better this will work. So stay tune for the time. But at the allotted time, we will stop whatever we are doing. Go to our sacred space, light a white candle and begin to chant, as we chant we will build up energy. When our energy is at full capacity, we will release it into the World. The energy we release will be the energy of the Goddess. Her pure love, pure goodness and pure kindness will be released into our world. Can you imagine that?

Sound crazy? But it’s not. We unite our spirits in one chant, calling for all the violence, hatred, killings and murdering in the world to cease. Instead releasing the Goddess’ goodness, kindness and love to every man’s, woman’s and child’s heart on this planet. We can do it. We have the power to make this world a better place. It is our calling to do so. I can’t do it without you. Together we can accomplish great things. This year we will accomplish great things.

I hope you will join me in this huge undertaking. I believe the Goddess is calling us to do this. I believe our Goddess has shed as many tears as we have. Now it is our turn to fill the world with Her Love. If you are willing to help, please remember to look for the time of the ritual each month. Till then….

Love, Happiness and Much Joy for the New Year Ahead,

Lady A

We Wish You & Yours All the Joy and Happiness Of This Holiday Season!

Good Tuesday Morning, my dear friends! And to those who celebrate Christmas, “Merry Christmas to You & Yours!” I know I am running late, what’s new! I mean really. I can never get anywhere on time anymore. But today I was very relaxed and laid back because I actually get to work from home!!!! Peace and quiet, brother who am I kidding? I got up this morning and wasn’t really planning on doing anything. Then I got to cleaning a little here and a little there. Well you know how it is, before it’s over with you have cleaned the entire house. But as I was cleaning I was thinking about what to say today on the site. Deep down inside though, I was thinking wouldn’t it be wonderful if we could do like Samantha on “Bewitched.” You know twitch our little noses at this or that and ZAP it becomes the way we want it. Just going through life zapping our cares away. Making all the wrongs in the world right by just zapping. Having everything we desire by just zapping. Making our lives perfect by just zapping.

Unfortunately that’s not how it works and we know. We must endure what life deals our way. Whether it be great sadness, which we have experienced much too much of this year, or great joy. We all have to find a way to just survive. Get through one day at a time. I know what I am getting ready to ask you will be hard for some to do, but……during this long holiday season try to put all the sadness, bad experiences, losses you might have had, and trouble by the wayside for just a moment. Instead of thinking about all of those, think about the joy of this season. Think what this season is all about, let it feel your soul and your very essence. Breathe deeply, my friend. For you are breathing in the Love of the Goddess. She surrounds us completely. She is waiting for you to let Her give you great Joy and Happiness. All you have to do is just breathe deeply if only for a moment. She is there. She has Returned The Sun to Us. What a Blessing! We have the promise the darkness will soon end and the light will return to us. In this, we have the promise of starting anew, refreshing our souls, letting the Goddess enter our lives and guide us daily into the New Year.

For a moment, my friend, breathe, breathe deeply. Feel Our Glorious Goddess, let Her engulf you and fill you with the joy and happiness of this Blessed Season!

Much Love & Happiness To You & Yours,

Lady A

Daily Motivator for September 29 – Joy is a choice

Joy is a choice

There is nothing that can make you happy if you choose not to be. And there  is nothing that can prevent you from being happy when happiness is your  choice.

There is no need to delay the joy of living until some future, imagined,  ideal time when conditions are perfect. Now is when you are living your life,  and now is your opportunity to live with genuine joy.

No position or possession or experience or set of circumstances will make  your life good. Your life already is filled with magnificent goodness that’s  yours to be experienced to whatever degree you allow.

Worrying about the future achieves nothing other than to rob you of joy in  the present. Feel the wonder of your being, right here, right now, and fill your  awareness with its richness.

Instead of looking for reasons to be envious or resentful, see in each moment  all the opportunities for joy. Instead of avoiding or delaying what must be  done, step enthusiastically forward each time you have a chance to make a  difference.

Joy is a beautiful, life-affirming choice that you can always make no matter  what. Choose to live with joy, and give yourself a life that’s truly rich.

What Would You Do With a Year Off?

What Would You Do With a Year Off?

Close your eyes. Imagine for a moment that you had a year — 365 days, 8,760  hours, 525,600 minutes — to do anything you please, with $100,000 to cover your  expenses. Would you travel? Would you continue working and give the money to  charity? Would you take the time to simply do nothing, maybe go on retreat?

Last week, Mallika encouraged readers to consider what they would do if they  had a year off. I have to say, my first inclination was default to the  “make-the-world-a-better-place” answer– give it to charity, of course! I mean, I  know this may sound crazy, but I love working. Even if I had a year off, I don’t  think I could bring myself to drop my job and do nothing. So if my ideal year  would include working anyway, why not give it away, especially when we know  that contributing to others’ happiness is a much greater source of joy and fulfillment than anything  money could buy?

But as I thought about it more, I remembered the words of a friend I have who  keeps trying to convince me of the important of “leisure” and “pleasure” in my  life. I know, foreign concepts for the modern workaholic, right? A few months  ago, when I went to visit her in Miami, her assignment for me was to get a  pedicure once a month — which has been surprisingly difficult for me to actually  follow through on. I have a hard time slowing down, relaxing, engaging in an  activity simply for the sake of enjoying it.

have always wanted to travel. I’ve never ventured outside the  US (not even to Mexico or Canada), and I’ve long wanted to visit other cultures  — learn about how they find happiness, purpose, and meaning in their lives.  Taking a year off for travel… now that would be cool. But would it be  fulfilling? Would I be mentally, physically, and spiritually satisfied with  taking a year off to travel?

What if, I thought, I could combine those three things somehow? Create a  year-long project that would combine the work I love (writing), giving back  (service/charity), and the leisure (travel)? What would that project look  like?

Here’s what I came up with. If I had $100,000 to take a year off, this is  what I would do:

  • Take a writing tour of charity organizations in four different countries  around the world, spending three months deeply immersed in each community
  • Listen and learn about how each organization’s programming is benefiting the  community and transforming individuals’ daily lives
  • Document the experience through a series of articles that synthesize  personal stories, scientific research, historical background, etc
  • Highlight major social issues affecting underserved communities  (poverty, violence against women, water shortage, climate change,  HIV/AIDS, etc) and what people are doing to help
  • Record interviews with staff, volunteers, scientific researchers,  and other involved professionals at each nonprofit to shed light on best  practices
  • Compile all the articles into a book at the end of the year

So that’s my dream year. Heck, maybe that’s my dream life. I think it’s a  good recipe for happiness: find meaningful work, connect with people, give back  to your community, and take time to enjoy the ride. I guess, really, you  don’t need $100,000 to do that.

What about you? What would your dream year look like? What do  you think is a recipe for a happy year and fulfilling life?
