How to Use Sun Phases for Spells

While almost every witch follows Moon phases for doing spells, rituals, and other magickal works. I also use the Sun phases, especially because my patron God is Ra.

Every day there is a waxing, full, waning and new phases for the Sun besides the seasonal changes. From midnight to noon is the waxing phases, the full phase is from 11:55 AM to 12:05 PM, the waning follows until sunset than at 11:55 PM to 12:05 AM is the new Sun phases. For the seasons spring is the waning, summer the new fall the waxing and winter the full. You can also go by Sabbat dates Beltane-Waning, Summer Solstice – New, Samhain – Waxing, Winter Solstice – Full.

This idea and the phases may seem a bit strange to people but when the Moon is in the wrong phases for something I cannot wait to do I use the daily and if possible seasonal Sun phases. This gives me more options of what I need to do.

Spell for Today – A House Blessing

I do not recommend this to be done by novice Witches or anyone new to casting spells and/or The Craft. This is just one way of many you can use to bless your home.

WATER for PROTECTION RECIPE:

What you will need:

24 Ounce glass container with lid of rain or tap water
Add to it whatever amount feels right to you (nothing in potions is as simple as add 1 teaspoon of this or 1 Tablespoon of that it is all done by what feels right to each person doing it.) You do want MORE Salt the garlic in the mixture
Table Salt-No Iodine if possible
Powered Garlic
Roughly Ground or Broken into small pieces Rosemary
Use your Atheme, Ceremonial Knife, Wand or even a spoon you will use for only for mixing potions and/or herbs to mix the ingredients while reciting this spell:

“I bless this water and all it contains to keep my home and property protected from negative energy and entities, anything that may wish to harm those who dwell here,
Anyone living or dead who may try to do or say something against those that live here.
Keep us safe in all types of storms be it Elemental or man-made, physical, mental or emotional.
Make and keep our home a dry place,
A warm and safe place.
Let all who enter our home be filled with love and light
I ask Archangel Michael to surround our home and property with his protective white light.
These are my words THIS IS MY WILL So mote it be”

Strain the water into a bowl you can easily dip your fingers into.

HOW TO DO THE HOUSE BLESSING:

Using your power hand (the one you write with) dip your fingers into the Protection Water and using the sign of the Pentagram or an even sided cross you sprinkle the Water saying, “EVIL LEAVE DO NOT ENTER.” This is said with convection and in a firm voice. Re-dip fingers as soon as they feel even a little dry.

Starting from the doorway you enter through make the sign of a Pentagram or Cross at each of the four corners of the door frame (I do mine inside as well as outside). You then begin walking clockwise through the house stopping at EVERY corner, window, doorway (whether it is a door or and archway between two rooms or a closet or even a cabinet door), mirror, TV, cable box, DVD/Blu Ray/VHS player, computer (desk, laptop, tablet, etc), land line, cell phones, faucets, drains, radios, washer and it hoses, dryer and dryer vent, and everything else you may have that is a connection with the outside world and your home.

Next go to the second level of your home (if you have one); starting at the main entrance follow the same procedure to bless that level as you did on the main floor.

After that if you have a basement in your home bless everything that needs to be on that level.

Last place indoors is the attic (if you can get into it) bless everything that needs to be up there. If you can not get to your attic using a spray bottle, spray a little of the blessed water onto the ceiling in each room and the inside top of doorways.

Now go to the outside of the home. Bless the outside of all doors that the house can be entered through by either anyone living or dead or any type of entities; just as you did indoors. Also do a Pentagram or Cross on any door itself by dipping your fingers in the water draw the sign directly onto the door.

Last but not least you do the perimeter of your property. Strain the water into a spray bottle have the water coming out in a straight line rather than a mist, then just keep squeezing the trigger as you walk the out perimeter of your property. Start at the corner of your property closest to the main entrance of your home than walk clockwise and just keep repeating. “Evil leave do not enter”, in a firm, commanding voice until you reach the place you started at. Walk about two more feet back across where you started so the protection circle/square/rectangle is completely closed. If you have a lot of property you will want to walk a perimeter of the land you mow and/or use most often including a house vegetable garden if you grow one away from your normal yard.

Repeat the house blessing yearly both inside and out as many different negative things try to get at us. By doing it this way you can make sure the protection wards for your family are strong and nothing, has found a weak spot to cross into your property and/or home.

I have also used this as a body spray if I am going to some place where I may not know people. I mix a batch of protection water with less garlic and salt but the same amount of Rosemary. I mix the water and let it stand for two days then strain it. Do not make a lot of the body spray at once because it only smells nice for about two weeks and then the garlic is too strong.

I also spray this on a stone that I carry in my pocket whenever I go out to keep negativity away from myself. If you use this to empower a stone rinse it with running water every time you come home and say, “Water wash all negativity from this stone.” Place it outside or on a windowsill in the Sun to dry. After it is dry re-spray it with the Protection water.

The protection water can be refrigerated for up to two weeks. Or you can freeze it for up to a year. Make sure to strain the herbs out before placing in either fridge or freezer. When I freeze mine I use an ice-cube tray that way I can take out as many cubes to melt as I need the water for.

2013 Lady Beltane

In Memory of WOTC Founder Lady of the Abyss

I type this with tears flowing because I still think about our Lady A everyday especially when I still pick up the phone for our daily phone call. I had very few people in my life that helped and guided me as a sister and friend as much as she did when I was lost after my mother crossed in 2015. Lady A has touched the hearts and minds of so many people both face to face and through WOTC. She would find time to reply to emails from people needing help or just to say hi to her.

Her and I had a running joke that she twisted my arm hard to come out of retirement and once again help people who want to learn about witchcraft, and/or attend an online coven gathering. There have been times I wanted to throw in the towel on Coven Life, but she always had a way to talk me out of it. Now when I have those thoughts, she comes to me in my dreams and first kicks my ass for even thinking of doing that and then give me a pep talk about all the people I have helped become a safe practicing witch. I gave Coven Life to a former student in 2021 so I could put all my efforts into WOTC.

I am thankful for all the years I got to know and love our Lady. I am trying to keep WOTC the kind of website she would be proud of. I might not have everything posted every day that she had but I am trying to do my best for her and all of you dear Sisters, Brothers, and Guests. Am I succeeding?

Please leave your thoughts and memories of Lady of the Abyss in the comments section below as we honor her crossing into the Summerlands 4 years ago.

Duir/Dair

D is for Duir, the Celtic tree of Oak. Like the mighty tree it represents, Duir is associated with strength, resilience and self-confidence. The Oak is strong and powerful, often dominating over its shorter neighbors. The Oak King rules over the summer months, and this tree was sacred to the Druids. Some scholars say the word Duir translates to “door,” the root word of “Druid”. The Oak is connected with spells for protection and strength, fertility, money and success, and good fortune.

In many pre-Christian societies, the Oak was often associated with the leaders of the gods–Zeus, Thor, Jupiter, and so forth. The strength and masculinity of the Oak was honored through the worship of these gods.

During the Tudor and Elizabethan eras, Oak was valued for its strength and durability, and was commonly used in construction of homes. The bark became valuable in the tanning industry, and many areas of Scotland were deforested in the rush to harvest Oak.

The Oak King – Major Arcana

Pages 65 and 66

The Oak King hangs upside down by his heel, which is wedged between branches of an oak tree. He is comfortable, casual, and relaxed as he contemplates his vital role within the infinite passage of time, tracing on the ground below him the perpetual cosmic lemniscate within the circle of the year. His position reflects the infinity symbol as he anticipates the familiar cycle of change, when the Oak King transitions into the unborn infant within the womb of Mother Earth, surrendering his reign to himself as the Holly King, the Sage who will rule until the Oak King is reborn at Yule. The lemniscate shows that the God’s endless cycle of life and authority is a harmonious interaction of light and shadow, demonstrating that life itself moves through the seasons of its own, an he is the guide.

This card offers the opportunity to meditate or focus inward and determine what needs to be released to make room for what needs to be brought in, and what needs to be retained. This can be an external or internal housecleaning, deciding what is unnecessary in one’s life, what is worthy of being kept, and what is new and beneficial. Here is a time when the conscious and subconscious may communicate, discovering what is desired and what is no longer necessary in one’s life.

The matter of change is in the tenuous phase of transition, requiring thought and the willingness to let go of the outmoded in order to reach achievement in some area of life. This is the stage of determining what foundation will be laid for the future and what new venture or outlook should begin. When this card appears in a reading, one is advised to take the time to consider the various options, pull together resources, and bring everything into balance before proceeding. Just as spell materials are set on a pentacle during magic work for grounding and manifestation in the physical world, so too should one prepare for what materialize.

Meaning: Paused activity, transition, meditation, weighing options, inner peace, patience, deciding what changes to make, self-sacrifices for gains.

Prompt Words: Introspection, inner peace.

Iodhadh/Idad

I is Iodhadh, or Idad, the Yew tree. Much like the Death card in the Tarot, the Yew is known as a marker of death and endings. This evergreen tree has leaves that are attached in a spiral pattern to the twigs. Because of its unusual growth pattern, in which new growth forms inside the old, the Yew is strongly tied to rebirth and new life following death.

The Yew has no medicinal value at all, and in fact, it’s mostly toxic. Livestock have been known to die from eating the poisonous leaves. Berries can be used, but should be treated with caution. On a practical level, the wood of the Yew tree is very hard and resistant to water damage, so it was popular in the making of longbows in England.

In A Modern Herbal, Maud Grieve says of the Yew,

“No tree is more associated with the history and legends of Great Britain than the Yew. Before Christianity was introduced it was a sacred tree favoured by the Druids, who built their temples near these trees–a custom followed by the early Christians. The association of the tree with places of worship still prevails.”

Iodhadh Correspondences

Mundane Aspects: Although it may not represent spiritual death, if Iodhadh appears, it’s a sign that major transitions are coming. Be aware of them, and realize that although not all of them are bad, they will probably be pretty significant. Now’s a good time to get rid of things which are of no use to you, in order to make room for new beginnings.

Magical Aspects: Changes are on the way, so quit clinging to beliefs and ideas that no longer serve you well. Shed the old, and welcome the new. Accept change for what it is–an asset–and stop seeing it as an obstacle. Don’t fear new things, embrace them.

Animal Spirit Guide or Helper

Chimpanzee – “Use both your intuition and your intellect to solve the problem or get answers to your questions”

Pages 36 to38

When your intuition and intellect are in harmonious accord with each other, there’s no problem that you can’t resolve. The combination emerges as creative intelligence, an elegant blend of your capacity for reasoning coupled with a deep trust in your gut feelings. In the flow of thought and action that results in resolving your question or problem this way, you may surprise yourself as to how simple and effective the answer really is.

Your intuition is actually a constellation of physical cues that response the subtle body language, voice intonations, and energetic quality of the people or situations around you, often felt in your gut but not confined to that area. It’s your instinct communicating—an aspect of your animal nature that’s cued in to your survival and growth. You can best access this instinctual wisdom by breathing slowly and steadily and focusing your attention on the physical sensations you notice.

In addition to your intuitive feelings, get more information on which to base your choices by doing some research. Consult books, the Internet, other types of oracles, and/or discuss the issue with a friend. Or you may simply need time to contemplate it. Often when you walk away from the problem or question after intensely researching it, an unexpected insight surfaces that helps you discern the best choice among the possibilities. When there’s congruity between mind and intuition, coupled with a healthy dose of patience, you tap into the deeper wisdom of Source.

Some of the Witchcraft/Magickal Correspondence for Wednesday

From learnreligions.com

Wednesday is named for Woden himself, although the Romans called it dies Mercurii. This is a day associated with the color purple, the planet Mercury, and the metal quicksilver—which is also called mercury. See a pattern here?

When it comes to deities… yes, Mercury! However, there are a few other gods associated with Wednesday, including Odin and Hermes, Athena, and Lugh. Gemstones like adventurine and agate come in handy as well, as do plants such as aspen trees, lilies, lavender, and even ferns.

Business and job-related issues, communication, loss and debt, traveling, and journeys are all tied into Wednesday. This is a good day to do a working to open up lines of communication—especially if your actions are preventing you from being an effective speaker or listener. Go someplace new or return to an old favorite stomping ground, step up your game, and settle up your accounts.

Beith

Intention, beginnings, births, pioneer spirit

Birch (Betula spp.)

Letter: B

Well dignified: An intention with good potential. Bravery. Breaking free. Ending bad habits. Getting unstuck. The start of something good. A new way of thinking. An invention or fresh approach. The ability of getting outside yourself and fossilized modes of thinking. Breaking out of the box. Being the change instead of just talking about it.

Humans learn through mimesis, so it is only because of the brave souls willing to put their necks out for change that anything improves in the world. Beith indicates the willingness to follow through with an intention so you can change yourself and your world for the better. At first, it’s possible nobody will follow you, but Beith says you have the courage to get it done.

Every day is a new opportunity to become a better person than you were yesterday, no matter how tiny the improvement. What can you do, even if it is a tiny action or possibly inaction depending on the circumstance, to be kinder, braver, humbler, more honest with yourself, more generous, and more grateful than you were yesterday, last week, last year, or last decade?

Questions when you draw Beith:

-What’s new in your life? For now, do you perceive it/them as good, bad, or both?
-Who is the bravest person you know, in real life or otherwise, living or dead, and what you say to them if you could?
-What traits do you want to imitate when you think of a brave person?
-What was the original intention behind the three worst decisions you have ever made in your life?
-What was the original intention behind the three best decisions you have ever made in your life?

Beith ill-dignified excess: Too many ideas
Confused and contrary intentions. The need to limit ideas or prevent a bad idea from coming to fruition. Being on the bleeding edge, not understanding consequences when you hurl yourself at a thing. An idea that is destined for failure, like going on a diet or attempting to get rich quick. Bitterness when you have a great idea that everybody rejects because you are the first person to do it; being too far ahead of your time. Possibly having a misguided, too vague, or even toxic intention that you’ve refused to examine the cold light of morning. Too many good ideas — a great problem to have, but you don’t have infinite time to pursue them all. Throw some in the fire.

Beith ill-dignified dearth: Lack of ideas
Weakness, inertia, depression, sloth. Paralysis. Wanting things to change and knowing it’s not yet the right time or right place. Feeling stuck or trapped in a situation. Possibly blaming others for problems that originate from within. Needing a dialogue or to talk and/or think it out. Having no idea what to do next. Possibly the need to overcome phobias by striking at their emotional roots. Possibly the feeling that you can somehow escape dealing with your problems, sometimes at the existential level, like when an atheist contemplates suicide as a “way out”. It doesn’t work that way: just bite the bullet and figure out how to work on yourself, because the notion that you have a choice on whether to do so or not is a false one.

“Sow a thought, reap an action.
Sow an action, reap a habit.
Sow a habit, reap a character.
Sow a character, reap a destiny.”

Hexagram Sixty – Two/62

Hsiao Kuo / Lying Low

Thunder high on the Mountain, active passivity:
The Superior Person is unsurpassed in his ability to remain small.
In a time for humility, he is supremely modest.
In a time of mourning, he uplifts with somber reverence.
In a time of want, he is resourcefully frugal.

When a bird flies too high, its song is lost.
Rather than push upward now, it is best to remain below.
This will bring surprising good fortune, if you keep to your course.

SITUATION ANALYSIS:

There is no profit to striving here.
To be content with oneself is the greatest success imaginable.
The enlightened person has nothing to prove to himself or others, and thus may always operate from a position of sincerity, with no pretense or posturing.
His humility is guileless simplicity.
His mourning is selfless compassion.
His frugality is an unshakeable faith that he is but a conduit, letting what is needed flow through him to others, with no loss to himself.

Animal Spirit Guide or Helper

Your Animal Spirit Guide comes from the deck and book Messages From Your Animal Spirit Guides by Steven D. Farmer

Dog

Your loyalty and faithfulness is misplaced by serving to many masters.

“Whom do you serve?” is the question at hand here. When you compromise your personal integrity through misguided attempts to placate others out of fear of their disapproval or to avoid up setting them, you deny your own inner authority and give away your power. You become their servant, and they, your masters. You allow this by assuming that another person or organization has greater knowledge, power, or spiritual wisdom than you, and put yourself in “less Than” position. While other may possess some of these attributes to a greater degree than you do, you can honor them as teachers — not masters.

Children may rightly look to their parents for this sort of guidance. However, as they mature, it’s appropriate that the leash to their parents’ authority stretches and is eventually severed. The human error is to continue to project this parental authority onto other people and institutions, and then either subjugate their will or act in opposition to that perceived authority. Over a number of years, you may find yourself attached to the leashes of their masters, leading you to feel fragmented and, to some degree, powerless. Instead, take off those collars, and let Spirit be your one true Master. Then you will experience true freedom.

Tarot Card

From Tarot for the Green Witch by Ann Moura Copyright 2003.

Ace of Swords – Decision; activity

Pages 86 and 87

Baby Fire dragons are hatching out of a nest among the lower fire vents on the slope of a volcano. A Celtic sword visible behind the nest stands upright and has craved dragons twining around the hilt. In the background the volcano is glowing and blowing smoke. The clouds are dark with reflections of fire on them. Fire symbolizes physical, mental, and spiritual strength and action. This strength can manifest either as destructive power or regeneration, depending upon the intent and self-discipline of the individual. The sword also has much the same meaning: strength and defense, the power to liberate or wound. Potential for self-destruction is represent by the active volcano in the background. Our lives are often disrupted by cataclysmic events, which sometimes seem to destroy our lives and turn them upside down. If we can learn to harness the fire of these events, we can walk safely through the flames and come out stronger tham we were.

Divinatory Meaning: You are in the process of making decisions that will effect your life for some time. A new period or cycle of much activity is imminent. Beware of activity without thought.

Items you will need:

Both hands
6 fingers

Hold both of your hands in front of you. Stare at your hands, noticing your palms and fingers, for about thirty seconds. Then, say this chant one time:

“Palms sweaty,
From watching clocks.
No more.
One finger,
For every ten docked.
Seconds in a minute
1440 in a day.
Stop a few,
For singing birds
And trees that sway.”

This should feel like time has slowed-down and allowed you to appreciate life more.

A Little About Moon Phases

download

The Moon goes through four different phases every 29 days.

The full (Mother) Moon-this lasts from one night before until one night after the date the Full Moon is shown on a regular calendar. A full Moon is used to bring things to you. A good time for spells for your income to increase, protection for yourself, someone else or your home, etc. It is the best time to consecrate a Ritual tool, hold a Handfasting, marriage or Wiccaning.

Next comes the Waning Moon. This period lasts from the second night after the full Moon until one night before the New Moon. During this period, it is a time to send things away from you such as a build up of negativity around you or to charm an object to help you control a bad habit.

Then comes the New (Crone) Moon. This phase is from one night before until one night after the date the New Moon appears on a regular calendar. This is the time when being able to banish or send away bad habits, negative energy, do a house cleansing, etc.

Lastly is the Waxing Moon. This is a time of new beginnings and to bring good things to you. Use it to start a new project or job or getting to know someone better, etc. It is also a good time for a marriage or Handfasting. To charm an object to carry with you for protection or to do a house blessing, etc.

While I have only listed a very few things that work out better if done during the correct Moon phase. They are meant as a guideline to get you thinking about what else you may do during the correct phase.

Remember every time you do a spell or charm an object what energy you send out comes back to you three times as strong-The Law of Three.
