A young boy holds up a tiny, baby Fire Dragon on one hand, delight and fascination on his face. Behind him on the wall hangs a great Celtic sword and shield. At his feet lies a rolled scroll, symbolic of a spiritual message. However, the boy does not notice the second baby Fire dragon has set fire to the scroll. Because of his inattention, he does not receive the message. The shield not only represents protection, but personal identity. Knights paint identifying marks on their shields so they would know friend from foe. The sword of strength and defense hangs ready for use. Ae (sometimes represented as X or Xi), is Amhancholl or Eamhancholl, associated with Witch Hazel. This natural astringent is purifying and cleansing. The word Eamhancholl literally translates to “twin of Hazel”, so there is a strong connection to C–Coll in the Ogham. When Amhancholl appears, it’s usually an indicator that cleansing and purification is necessary or has taken place.

From a purely medicinal standpoint, Witch Hazel has long been used as a cleanser and astringent. Native American tribes turned it into a poultice which was used to treat swelling and tumors. Amongst the early settlers, midwives arriving in the New World found that it could be used to prevent sepsis following childbirth or an abortion. Today, it’s still in use as a treatment for skin inflammations, such as insect bites, mild burns, and even hemorrhoids.

Today’s Tarot card reading comes from The Green Witch Tarot Deck and The Green Witch Tarot Companion by Ann Moura. With the art done by Kiri Ostergaard Leonard.

As I was pulling and am typing the meanings for each card, I noticed they all point to finances, work, learning new skills, and being more independent where any kind of work is concerned. Instead of having 4 different tarot cards for 4 different topics I am going to combined all of today’s tarot cards plus add 1 more to do an Influence of Elements spread for all the cards. They all belong under the heading of finances. I suggest you read all the card meanings and then see how they fit together in your own life today.

Card 1 – Spirit/Center (the spiritual health of your life.)

Ace of Chalices – Minor Arcana

This is a card of love, joy, happiness, and abundance. One’s cup overflows with emotional satisfaction, and the light of the Sun emphasizes the positive energy being transmitted. The power of elation is so great as to offer nourishment to others. This is also a card of productivity and fulfillment, possibly indicating fertility or pregnancy. One can act with determination, knowing the results will be satisfying. As a symbol of elemental water, this card incorporates the lunar forces of the subconscious mind, enhancing psychic ability and moving the emotional ties within one. New approaches at work or a promotion could require specialized training, but the person has the ability to pick up these new skills with ease. While others may struggle or resist change, this person moves with confidence, adapting easily to new situations and requirements. The farmer depicted is unconcerned about the coming storm, for he knows his job and has secured his barn, so he is prepared for anything.

This is a card of apprentice who is eager to test the skills learned. There is an adroit use of language talents and desire to be more self-assertive. Here the young girl practices calling the quarters for ritual, using the instructions in her Book of Shadows and gaining self-confidence with her actions. This is the beginning of independent thinking, but one must take care no to let this self-assurance slip into the cockiness of ambition and certitude. The time is right to showcase one’s talents for evaluation, endorsement, recognition, or advancement. Proving oneself can be a personal matter or one related to work, with the implied caution of possible competition with others reaching for the same goal. Vigilance is needed, plus a keen awareness of learning what is required to pursue one’s goals. Competitors may be engaging in spying and gossip, so one must be discreet with words and apply the necessary wisdom to avoid spitefulness. The Holly King – Major Arcana

This card symbolizes the wisdom that comes from time and experience, and the need to discovers one’s own path. Here the God is seen in his Holly King aspect, the Sage who at Yule turns over his hourglass of wisdom to the new born Oak King. The sack over his shoulder contains gifts of knowledge and experience to be passed along to others. This is the wise mentor teaching others, the accomplished elder craftsman training the young, imparting to them the foundation that will support them as the gain hands-on experience. The lantern of the Holly King hangs from his stang, the two-pronged staff that is also an altar, and it continues to light the way for others. This new path offers change for others through example and by opening new vistas, yet each individual learns on personal terms. In the passage of time, it is the trek itself that leads to wisdom.

Adaptation to the new is also indicated by this card, showing growth, evolution of thought, and understanding. A person may feel a need for introspection to contemplate their path or consider what it is that truly draws them. Spiritual questing may be involved, or disconnecting from the expectation of others. In finding a new path, one could be a beacon of encouragement to others, opening the way into a new life patterns and progressing with inner development.

The figure of the Holly King is also that of Father Time, the old year giving way to the new year’s infant in the renewing cycle of the seasons. The wise old God departs with a smile to his younger self, the Oak King, nursing in the arms of the Mother Goddess. Just as the old solar year ends and the new begins at the winter solstice, the cycle of life and lessons learned will be repeated through human generations as it is yearly for the God.

At the top of his bundle can be seen the tip of a small fir tree, representing life, spiritual development, light, and peace. The Holly King is accompanied by a reindeer, symbolizing knowledge and guidance.

King of Wands – Minor Arcana Court Card

This is the card of wise counselor or advisor, a respected leader or professional in a scientific, academic, or medical field. This is someone who has good intentions and is willing to share knowledge with others for their benefit. This person may be giving honest advice and direction with one’s best interests at heart. This could be a business consultant, a project collaborator, an instructor, or a professional in a career or a creative field. A paternal, sympathetic outlook may be implied, with a desire to be of help to others. The card can indicate a career in an academic area, or a school counselor who advises on requirements that need to be met, helps one gather necessary documents for further education or career advancement, or assigns courses that will lead one to fulfill an education or training goal. New perspectives.

In perfect harmony, three dragons coil and turn through the skies, weaving strands of spiritual energy with their claws. The sky itself holds repeating patterns of spirals, symbolizing the primal matter of creation-destruction that is all around us. One dragon is blue; another is shades of red; the third , shades of green. A Fire dragon holds two long swords in its claws, as it faces a man across an opening, blazing vent in the rocky ground. The only connection to the other side is a narrow bridge without railings. The man hesitates, one foot on the bridge, one foot on solid ground. One of his hands are outstretched to take a sword, but he must cross to get one. Celtic spirals are craved into the stark stones of the surrounding landscape. The bridge represents the link between the conscious and subconscious minds. A large dragon holds out a claw filled with coins to an old man with a cane. Beside the dragon, a little girl in tattered clothing hugs the dragon. The unlimited forces of the Universe work on the constant balancing of positive and negative. All we need do is seek and ask for the help we need. The child represents the hidden seed of trust and confidence within each of us that leads to a new cycle, even though we may be in the midst of sorrow. The child is completely unafraid of universal forces, subconsciously understanding that trust brings help and answers to our problems. Six pentacles can be seen on the cobblestones, leading from the struggling man to the glowing dragon. Our paths are full of signposts, directing us away from the negative and to the positive, if only we will be observant.

0 The Fool – Major Arcana

Pages 20 and 21

Description: A fool strides across the English countryside. He wears a fabulous multicolored costume. A hare gambols at his feet.

Interpretation: Here comes the Fool. Not a care in the world. Everything he says and does seems to turn out okay without his even trying. He’s the embodiment of effortless non-doing. All his possessions are wrapped up in just one knotted handkerchief. But is that mad look in his eye? Is he the village idiot, cuckoo-brained, a moon-calf? There’s a darker side to the Fool. He might be a trickster, an unraveller like Loki or Raven or Coyote or Efnysien, someone who brings chaos to the world, just because he can. He does suspiciously like Guy Fawkes. Or perhaps he’s the wise fool, able to speak when others cannot.

Traditionally, the Fool is regarded as the hero setting out on his magical quest. Of course, he starts from a state of pure innocence. Why else would he need to go adventuring? He needs to learn about himself and the world. That’s why his number is zero. Zero the hero. He starts with nothing.

Usually the Fool is accompanied by a small dog, but here Rex has given him a hare instead. According to mythology, the hare is wise and mad all at once, just like the Fool. As with any mammal that survives by running fast, hares have disproportionately large hearts—it’s what gives them oomph to escape the hounds. How appropriate. Like the hare, the Fool’s heart is huge and wide open. There might be a sheer drop in front of him, but he’d step right over and land without a scratch.

Reading: Embrace the Fool, take a leap into the dark. If he appears reversed, then it’s time to stop acting the fool. You’re not coming from a place of open-heartedness.

C, sometimes read as K, is Coll, which is the Hazel tree. August is known as the Hazel Moon, because this is when Hazel nuts appear on the trees–the world Coll translates to “the life force inside you”, and what better symbol of life than the nut itself? Hazel is associated with wisdom and creativity and knowledge. Sometimes it is connected in Celtic lore with magical springs, sacred wells, and divination.

Hazel was a handy tree to have around. It was used by many English pilgrims to make staffs for use upon the road–not only was it a sturdy walking stick, it also provided a modicum of self-defense for weary travelers. Certainly, it could have been used as well for ritual. Hazel was used in weaving of baskets by medieval folk, and the leaves were fed to cattle because it was believed this would increase the cow’s supply of milk.

In the Irish myth cycles, there is a tale that nine hazel nuts dropped into a sacred pool. A salmon came along in the pool and gobbled up the nuts, which then imbued him with wisdom. A variation of the story appears in the legend of Finn Mac Cumhail, who ate the salmon and then took on the knowledge and wisdom of the fish. Note that Mac Cumhail is often translated as Mac Coll.

HARE

Although hares and rabbits look similar, they have very different symbolism.  A hare is bigger than a rabbit, has longer ears, and possesses more powerful hind legs.  The two most abundant kinds are the European Brown Hare and the Snowshoe Hare.  The Snowshoe Hare is strongly linked to the Snowy Owl population, such that when hare populations are down, the owls stop breeding, and even die from starvation.  The hare is more solitary and tougher than the rabbit.  Hares don’t live in warrens or have maternity nests.  The young hares are born so well-developed that they can fend for themselves within a few hours of their birth.

The hare is associated with a number of myths from many different cultures.  The Algonquin tribe honored the Great Hare as a demiurge, a role in the creation of the world.  The Egyptians also saw the hare involved in a creation story.  For them, the hare came to mean procreation, and then immorality.  While the hare is often associated with impatience and haste (like the “Tortoise and the Hare” fable), it’s important to note that other cultures, like the Goths, saw the hare as fleet and swift, and symbols of diligence.  This reflects the attitudes of medieval hunters, who viewed hares as a challenge to catch.

Hare people are considered sensitive and artistic, and also linked with ambition, fitness, and virtue.  However, the hare is not just associated with positive things.  Hares are also thought of as greedy and selfish, even a bad example for people.  Hare is seen as a jokester, linked with trickery and fraud.  Even those with hare medicine are clever, often unreliable, and frequently thinking of themselves.

Although hare has some qualities that are less than redeeming, there are things he can teach us.  Because they move in leaping and hopping motions, those with rabbit and hare totems can expect changes in their own lives in the same kind of movement.  Hare can also aid people in recognizing the signs around them by attuning to lunar cycles and understanding the tides of movement in their own lives.

Shame isn’t all bad and does not deserve a uniformly awful reputation. Without shame and the fear of being shamed, every human child would be demonically bratty. Shame is a limit that informs us to keep our own ego in check. It is often about considering others. Having shame about one’s own past behavior is motivation to avoid shameful behaviors such as cheating and stealing.

Shame is an emotion that demands confrontation. All too often, people run away from what shames them, attempt to excuse themselves from wrongful or immoral behavior because they’re too cowardly to face what they have done or to admit their responsibility in causing their own misfortunes or the misfortune of others. Ruis indicates a willingness to face one’s own shame and to do with shame what it was meant for, and that is to use shame of the past to build oneself into a better person for the present and future. Ashamed of something you did? How can you make yourself into the type of person who would never even think of doing something like that? Overcome being the type of person who would engage in the shameful behavior and you become the master of it; you won’t have the remotest chance of repeating such a mistake. Did you become embarrassed because you did something you now understand to be greedy? Then learn to balance thriftiness with generosity. Adjust to the circumstance rather than overreacting to it. Are you ashamed about cheating on a boyfriend/girlfriend or spouse? Become a person who would never cheat on your boyfriend/girlfriend or spouse regardless of conditions, which could mean an assortment of outcomes: sticking to a resolution of no cheating and staying together, admitting one’s sexual preferences and going with the flow, changing the person you are with, or being single for a long time.

Because humans tend to remember negative experiences more easily than positive ones, it’s important when you draw Ruis to acknowledge the things you are not ashamed of about yourself. For every bad or shameful thing you’ve done, remember there are a thousand shameful things you avoided. Maybe it is time to appreciate the places you could have gone horribly wrong and did not.
