The Sun – Major Arcana

Pages 58 and 59

Description: A courtier stands in a golden field fringed with sunflowers. The sun rises behind him.

Interpretation: After the ordeals of the Moon, the Sun is our moment of triumph, as we return from the Underworld, laden with treasure. Sol Invictus. Invincible Sun.

The solar man is a dandy and a peacock, an idler and a flaneur. He wears gold ruffles around his neck. His doublet is gold, his cloak is gold, his shoes are gold, the feather in his hat is gold. His is walking on the Field of the Cloth of Gold. Quite possibly, everything he touches turns to gold. He’s probably a courtier like Sir Francis Drake, lazy finishing he game of bowls, before taking on the Spanish Armada; or Sir Walter Raleigh back from the New World and ready to lay down his cloak to prevent his beloved queen’s feet from getting wet.

I know someone like this, to handsome he turns heads when he walks in the room. He'[s a wit and a raconteur, a traveler and adventurer. He’s the kind of person who’s just so talented and brilliant you want to hate him, but within moments you’re charmed and disarmed, in stiches at one of his anecdotes.

We mustn’t let all that glory go to our heads. For every charismatic dandy, there’s a puffed up buffoon, a popinjay, a cock of the rock. Too much sunshine and the ground is scorched, our skin blisters and burns, our tongues swell with thirst. Someone like that needs pushing in the river.

Reading: The Sun indicates a glorious outcome and happy summer days.

Ailim/Ailm

A is for Ailim, or Ailm, the Elm tree. Interestingly, this group also includes the Pine or Fir trees. These giants of the forest are symbols of perspective and height, rising above those that surround us. The Elm has a clear vision of that which surrounds it, as well as that which is approaching.

In Britain and Scotland, Elm trees grew very tall and straight, making them popular for use as a Maypole during Beltane celebrations. In addition to this, they were popular as property markers–you knew you had reached someone else’s land boundary when you crossed a line of Elm trees. Elm is flexible and bendy, so it doesn’t make a very good building material, but it does withstand water very well, so it eventually became popular for use in making flatboats and wheels. In Wales, early bowmen used the Elm in construction of longbows.

General: You can achieve strength in numbers by dispelling mistrust.

Love: To achieve a desired objective you should work together.

Business: Communication with your staff is the key to dispelling misunderstandings.

Personal: Develop community spirit by organizing workshops particularly for projects.

Nature – Major Arcana

Pages 76 to 78

This is the card of wild Nature, where the path chosen may be joyful and unrestricted or fraught with unseen dangers and overgrown vines. Here the trapper is setting a bear trap, unaware that the bear is behind him, watching. The man is equally oblivious to the fauns of the wilderness dancing in a distant clearing, one even beckoning to the bear.

Choices are the highlight of this card, as are possible repercussions. The warning is that short-term goals that require personal sacrifice are not always in one’s best interests. Will the bear join in the revelry of the nature spirits, or will it risk being entrapped by reaching into something unnatural? People also choose the direction they travel in their lives, and sometimes what originally seems like a blessing turns out to be false. Then the choice becomes whether or not to liberate oneself. Staying in the job that pays well but has an unpleasant work environment or staying in an unrewarding relationship because of the experience of other only two examples of how one may take on undesired burdens. The restrictions that are self-imposed may also be self-released, so that one may better savory the joy of life and dance with the fauns. One may choose to act freely, to laugh at the result if necessary, or be tied to a situation, a way of life, or an attitude that is not enjoyed or liked.

Following the natural desire and inclination to find satisfaction in life is a matter of conscious deliberation and decision, whether in areas of attitude, materialism, or spirituality. Yet there is the allure of trying to control the material world or letting desire rule a person. The Divine in nature offers harmony in living a natural life, enjoying the material aspects as well as the spiritual, and regaining control over one’s life and laughing at the tripping vines. This comfortable relationship with nature is part of the path of the Craft, allowing one to be linked with nature and the divine. Comfrey, symbolizing binding, control, and liberation from control, grows close to the trap. The black bear represents endurance, introspection, and decisions.

Meaning: Accept or release self-imposed restrictions, follow inclinations, potential is obstructed or unleashed, allow the natural course to flow, freedom, choose what appeals.

Prompt Words: Choice of restriction or freedom.

 Love

Six of Chalices

Pages 208 to 209

This is a card of nostalgia, remembering and making happy memories. A reunion or an unexpected encounter with someone from the past is possible. With thoughts directed to the past, there may be an attempt to bring comfort or ideals of the past to be realized in the present. There may be a desire to relive good memories in the present, as when a parent passes a tradition or hobby interest down to children and grandchildren, or when one attempts to repeat one’s childhood in parenting. This could lead to disappointment when what was meaningful to one is not received with enthusiasm by the beneficiary. The initial disappointment could be liberating opportunity to step beyond the wistfulness of the past and move into the reality of the present, to be able to acknowledge and appreciate the differences of others. There is both longing for the good old days and a desire to bring some of those good memories into the present, but with care an relevance to the current life. Living in the past can create a sense of melancholy, yet there may be connections to the past that can be utilized to manifest past dreams in the present.

Marjoram, an herb of happy memories, comfort, connections, and family, is carried by the girl. A canary, a symbol of companionship, happiness, and harmony, is carried in a cage by the boy.

Meaning: Longings, happy memories, harmony, reminiscence, reunions, expectations manifested, self-analysis, renewal.

Prompt Words: Happy memories, renewal.

Straith

This symbol, used for the sound St, is Straith (sometimes seen as Straif), the Blackthorn tree. A symbol of authority and control, the Blackthorn is connected to strength and triumph over adversity. Blackthorn is a tree (although some might argue it’s more of a really big shrub) of winter, and its berries only ripen after the first frost. White flowers appear in the spring, and the bark is black and thorny.

On a medicinal level, Blackthorn berries–sloe berries–are brewed to make a tonic (this is what Sloe Gin is made from). The tonic can be used as a laxative and/or diuretic, as well as a skin astringent. In folklore, the Blackthorn has a fairly unpleasant reputation. An English legend refers to a devastating winter as a “Blackthorn Winter.” It also represents the darker side of magic and witchcraft. Because it’s a plant that becomes hardy when all around it is dying, it is associated with the Dark Mother, the Crone aspect of the Goddess, particularly the Cailleach in some parts of Scotland and Ireland. There is also a strong connection to the Morrighan, because of Blackthorn’s association with the blood and death of warriors. In fact, in early Celtic culture, the Blackthorn was popular for its use in the cudgel shillelagh.

Straith Correspondences

Mundane Aspects: Expect the unexpected, especially when it comes to change. Your plans may be altered, or even destroyed, so plan to deal with it. The appearance of Straith often indicates the influence of external forces.

Magical Aspects: You’re at the beginning of a new journey, and there will be some surprises–possibly unpleasant ones–along the way. Overcoming these obstacles will give you strength. Realize that you–and your life–are changing.

Hexagram Fifty – Two/52

Name: Ken.

Keyphrase: Keeping still.

Formed By The Trigrams: Mountain over Mountain.

General: Any and all effective action must be born out of stillness.

Love: In order to see things clearly you must let go of any preconceptions.

Business: Clear your mind before making any important business decisions.

Personal: Learn how to meditate to help achieve a still mind.

Overview: Ken reminds you that if your mind is full of clutter it will not be able to hold new thoughts and ideas. Ken appears when you have a need to take a break and withdraw from the world for a moment in order to clear out the old in your mind to make way for the new. Meditation is the key to this process. It is not simply a time for rest. It is not an easy task to free your mind from daily worries, but it is necessary to do so, so that you can see and think more objectively than before. Old thoughts hinder your actions, compelling you to make the same mistakes. Clear them out – don’t let them trap you.

Numerology

Six

The 6 is considered the most harmonious of all single-digit numbers in numerology.

The Numerology Meaning of the Number 6: THE CARETAKER

The most important attribute of the 6 is its loving, caring nature. Aptly nicknamed the motherhood/fatherhood number, the 6 is all about sacrifice, healing, protecting, and teaching others.

No family or community can function without the attention of the 6 – it is the glue that keeps a family and community together.

Creating an environment of peace and harmony is always at the forefront.

Home, family, and friends are top priorities. People with a 6 in their core numbers often focus on the young, the old, and those less fortunate.

The 6 is sympathetic, favors the underdog, and has a keen sense of what is fair and just. Perceiving injustice, the 6 will sacrifice immense time and effort to set things straight. Highly responsible, the 6 can be counted on to show up and do more than their fair share of the work. People with a 6 can be demanding, but they will work in the background when needed, without an expectation of reward.

The 6 is graceful, warm, and has a good sense of humor.

They are well respected in the workplace due to their sense of duty and responsibility – but also because they are genuinely well-liked. Many 6’s can be found in teaching, healing, counseling, construction, the legal field, and law enforcement.

On the negative side, the 6 can be jealous and small-minded, often focusing on small details while ignoring the bigger picture (often to their own detriment).

Not always the best judge of character, the 6 has been known to sacrifice for a person or cause not worth the price.

At times, the 6 can become too involved in the lives of those held dear, to the point where concern becomes intrusive and meddling. On the other hand, the 6 – ever sacrificing – can become a doormat to be abused and trampled on. The 6 is idealistic, trusting, and easy to take advantage of.

The 6 can be conventional, and must be wary of adopting the opinions of others instead of using their own mind.

They can also be smug and arrogant, especially toward authority figures and institutions. Sometimes annoyingly self-righteous, the 6 can become an intolerant zealot. A disproportional number of people with OCD have the 6 prominent in their charts and can suffer from anxiety and other phobias.

The 6, while loving, caring, and full of sympathy for others, can be self-centered and egotistical if people at the receiving end don’t show the gratitude expected. Typically, however, those fortunate enough to receive the attention of the 6 genuinely appreciate and cherish them in return.

Numerology views no number as without weaknesses and faults; that said, the 6 remains the most harmonious and stable among them. Perhaps for that reason, when the 6 (occasionally) falls into discord, it can become the most destructive and dangerous of all numbers. Beware of a cynical or angry 6, who can become a merciless wolf in sheep’s clothing.

Tarot Cards

Today’s Tarot card reading comes from The Celtic Dragon Tarot by D. J. Conway. With art done by Lisa Hunt. This deck is unique as the cards are never read in reverse. Copyright 2001

GENERAL

Six of Cups – Minor Arcana

Reunions; unexpect gifts.

A little boy and girl are smiling and hugging two large Water dragons, who rise out of a pond. The children symbolize the natural psychic connection all humans possess before they are taught such a thing is false. They are freely communicating with astral creatures because it is a normal thing to do. On the flower and tree-covered banks stand six chalice. The flowers and trees represent constant renewal of life, fed by the waters of the lake (emotional purity and balance). Tiny dragons flutter happily around the children, symbols of the potential power of even the tiniest pieces of cosmic energy. The six chalice represent the power of building in all its connotations; building of relationships, healing power, and bridges between people and/or species. By acknowledging this power of building, we we acknowledge the interconnectedness of all things, animate and inanimate.

Divinatory Meaning: A reunion with old friends may be near. New opportunities present themselves; be ready to act on them. Unexpected gifts may surprise you.

LOVE

The Lovers – Major Arcana

Am emotional decision.

A Forest dragon stands on the bank of a lake, its neck outstretched to touch noses with a beautiful Water dragon that rises from the waters. The gaze at each other in love, unconcerned that their attraction  will prove difficult because of their very different lifestyles. For the moment, they are caught up in the power of their emotions. The Forest dragon represents the liner, analytical left brain and the conscious mind, while the Water dragon represents creativity, spiritually connected right mind and the conscious mind. To achieve success and reach goals, both halves of the brain, as well as the conscious and subconscious minds, must live and work together in harmony in order to reach a spiritual balance point. However, because of the vast differences in perceiving life and spirit, this is extremely difficult to maintain on a constant basis.  Thus, we go through life in a kind of dance, approaching, then retreating from the balance point. The heron, representing generation of life, and the butterfly, symbolizing the soul itself, reveal that we must always be aware of the soul and its need to grow, regardless of our emotional side-paths.

Divinatory Meaning

A romantic encounter may come into your life. You may be faced with an attraction or a temptation that may not be good for you. There will be an attraction of opposites that will be difficult to reconcile in the long run. A difficult choice will arise; make your decision on facts, not the emotions

HEALTH

NINE OF PENTACLES – Minor Arcana

Comfortable Aloneness

A dragon and a man sit along the edge of a forest. It is a sunny day, and many small animals and birds are around the dragon and the man. The man is at one with Nature and his astral teacher, the dragon. The birds are messages from spirit to help him make a decision and find his path in life. The wolves in the background represent the strength, cunning, and wisdom he is learning, while the squirrel of resourcefulness, the rabbit of fertility, and the little mice of self-preservation help him to create a balanced attitude towards life.

DIVINATORY MEANING: You feel comfortable, safe, and at ease with yourself. There will soon be a pleasant period of being alone. A journey

Finances

See the source imageKing of Wands – Minor Arcana Court Card

Ambition; leadership.

A regal looking older man sits on a richly craved throne; he wears a crown with small blue stones on the spiky tips. Because the man’s long and dedicated studies, he has earned the title of Master of Air. Chaotic thoughts no longer plague hi,, for he has became disciplined in weeding out, organizing, and bending the power of those thoughts to his concentrated desire and goals. About his shoulders is a white and multiblue mantle (comfort and contentment), with tiny dragon figures as part of the design. On one partially raised hand sits a tiny, dark blue dragon, a small messenger that helps the king to communicate with other realms. The king’s other hand holds a long staff-like wand (willpower) with a crystal tip; its glow shows the purity of his will. A huge dragon peers over the back of the  above the man’s head. This is the kings guardian and advisor, a long-time companion on journeys through other realms of being. Another of his small Guardian dragons lies curled contently at his feet, its sleep revealing the calmness of the atmosphere around this powerful man.

Divinatory Meaning:

A masculine influence, who is powerful in the business world, could guide you in an important decision. Ambition and leadership qualities will get you ahead in your career. Beware that haste and ego do not get you in trouble

Keyphrase: The darkening of the light.

Formed By The Trigrams: Earth over Fire.

General: Concealing your light when danger is around is an effective way of avoiding detection.

Page of Pentacles

The Page of Pentacles shows a young man, standing alone in the middle of fertile land. There was a lush forest of fruit trees behind him, promising a plentiful harvest. He walked slowly and did not know anything about the surrounding area. He focused on nothing but the gold coin in his hands. The sky is bright and everything is going very well on the path leads to his future success.

In Tarot court cards, The Page is a card of new beginnings, inspiration and early stages of a creative project. Pentacles correspond to the element of Earth in Alchemy. Therefore, the fact that the Page treasures the gold coin shows an awareness, appreciating the value of money not only physically but also about the related needs such as health, food, and clothes.

Three

THE CREATIVE CHILD

The Love Child of Zeus and Hera.

In the previous chapter (on the number 2), I described the unique union between the numbers 1 and 2 as that of the father and mother unit, while revealing the contradictory natures of their personalities. Now, we move on to what could be considered the result of their union: the number 3, an extraordinarily talented child.

The number 3 is like a gifted teenager who is still under the protection of its parents – a bit spoiled, clearly scattered, and perpetually in need of guidance. However, the 3 excels in the creative field.

An individual with 3s in key points of their numerology chart will have a passionate need to express feelings, ideas, and vision. Coupled with an extroverted personality, they are likely to seek a career in art, especially the verbal arts.

Another unique quality of the 3 is the tendency to be “lucky,” or rather, to be in the right place at the right time. This may be connected to their innate sense of rhythm – the 3 seems to be in tune with the cyclical nature of their surroundings.

Their social skills are also excellent.

Charm, wit and a sense of humor help a 3 along their path, and a compelling charisma make them particularly attractive.

Followers are willing to forgive less favorable traits exhibited by 3s, such as their lack of focus and direction, a tendency to procrastinate, an inability to finish projects, and an unwillingness to take responsibility.

There is also a superficial side to the 3 that can be harder to look past – a narcissistic streak, the need to be the center of attention. It’s easy for the optimistic 3 to enjoy day-to-day life as long as all is well, but when challenging issues arise, internal fortitude is often lacking.

Without little focus on deeper aspects, the 3 can succumb to difficulties unless friends and family provide support.

For the 3 to become a balanced, happy person they must learn discipline. Fortunate 3s who exhibit talent early in life (such as gifted dancers and music prodigies) are often placed in environments with just the sort of discipline a 3 needs to protect those talents.

Relationships can be a bit of a challenge for the 3, at least those requiring long-term commitment and loyalty. With plenty of acquaintances (probably more than is healthy), when true depth and intimacy enter the picture, the 3 may turn tail and run.

The 3 can have a jealous streak too, causing conflicts when those it has rejected move on in search of more meaningful bonds.

Jealousy stems from the 3 recognizing it has been skimming the surface of life since birth. As a result, they feel insecure, thinking others know things that have escaped them.

But, once a 3 finds the motivation to delve deeply into the realities of life (something that may only happen when confronted), its happy facade has the potential to be replaced by the serenity true wisdom brings. Such a “transformed” 3 is a thing to behold.

No one is represented by just one number but is a mixture of several if not all the numbers in their chart. Those who are blessed with a heavy dose of 3s in their numerology chart tend to have an easier time being happy, optimistic, and playful.

However, this kind of “joie de vivre” can leave those same people unprepared for the more demanding experiences that life inevitably brings.

While the western mindset focuses on happy moments as the ideal, unhappy experiences are often the ones that bring greater depth and quality to our life.

For the number 3, happiness might be easy to achieve, but is almost always a consequence of something materialistic or fleeting (a new car, a new relationship, a sunny day). A higher happiness, one that is not the consequence of a particular event but the result of a deep appreciation toward life itself, is worth a million times more.

The biggest challenge for the 3 is to recognize the real beauty of life is not found in possessions or frivolity, but in the deepest aspects of being human.

When the 3 defies the odds to achieve this state of being, the fact that it has had to travel far to reach such a height makes this number uniquely qualified to help others reach the same goal.

Eight Hundred and Eight

808] What is the meaning of angel number?

Angel number 808 mainly means “richness” or “believing mind.” If you look closely at the 808 numbers recently, this 808 is the angel number given to you. Each of the three digits is significant, so let’s focus on the numbers that come out.

[808] meaning: God gives richness

808 is an auspicious message: “Everything you need comes from angels and God.” God and angels will support you, even if you are lucky. You should spend your days appreciating such things.

Meaning of [8]: Richness is approaching

Each of the numbers in the angel number has a meaning, and we focus on each of the numbers that come out. First of all, the number 8 that comes out means “you will be richer”. It shows that you will be financially rich and will give you time for money and things to be accomplished.

It suggests the richness of human relations as well as the economics, indicating that the people around you can be supported.

Meaning of [0]: Beginning with reset

Dog

Your loyalty and faithfulness is misplaced by serving to many masters.

“Whom do you serve?” is the question at hand here. When you compromise your personal integrity through misguided attempts to placate others out of fear of their disapproval or to avoid up setting them, you deny your own inner authority and give away your power. You become their servant, and they, your masters. You allow this by assuming that another person or organization has greater knowledge, power, or spiritual wisdom than you, and put yourself in “less Than” position. While other may possess some of these attributes to a greater degree than you do, you can honor them as teachers — not masters.

Children may rightly look to their parents for this sort of guidance. However, as they mature, it’s appropriate that the leash to their parents’ authority stretches and is eventually severed. The human error is to continue to project this parental authority onto other people and institutions, and then either subjugate their will or act in opposition to that perceived authority. Over a number of years, you may find yourself attached to the leashes of their masters, leading you to feel fragmented and, to some degree, powerless. Instead, take off those collars, and let Spirit be your one true Master. Then you will experience true freedom.

Eabhadh/Eadha

E is Eadhadh, or Eadha, which is the Aspen, a symbol of endurance and courage. The Aspen is a durable, hardy tree that grows all over North America and Scotland, so when Eadhadh appears, take it as a sign of strong will and success. Challenges may come your way, but you will eventually conquer your adversaries and obstacles.

In folklore and literature, the Aspen is associated with heroes, and many “crowns of Aspen” have been found in ancient burial sites. The sturdy wood was popular for making shields, and were often imbued with magical protective properties. In the Highlands of Scotland, the Aspen was often rumored to be connected to the realm of the Fae.

Eadhadh Correspondences

Mundane Aspects: Like the Aspen, you can be flexible without snapping. No matter what obstacles come, allow yourself to know that these too will be gone eventually. You will be left stronger for the experience, if you can get over your fears and reservations.

Magical Aspects: Don’t give in to the pressures of the material world. Focus instead on your spiritual journey, even if it seems like it would be a lot easier to give up and let things fall by the wayside. Even in the Tarot, the Fool knows he has a long way to go, but the first step is the hardest. When Eadhadh appears, put aside your distractions, and take that first all-important step on your journey.

“Let go of your fear and know that you are safe and protected at all times”

Pages 135 to 137

Whenever you venture into unfamiliar territory it’s quite natural to feel some trepidation. Your mind can create all sorts of scenarios as to what can go wrong. Doubts and uncertainties may arise, and the can seem fraught with challenges and sometimes even danger. You may find yourself stuck at times, fearful about moving ahead. Yet much of what we label as fear isn’t actually fear, True fear is a vital, instinctual response to any life-threatening situation and is triggered not only by circumstances or events, but even more so by what you think about those circumstances or events. Stay relaxed yet vigilant, trusting that nothing can truly harm you and that your body will provide sensory information if there is any actual danger. If there truly is a threat, then your instincts will tell you what to do.

Whenever you feel an exaggerated sense of fear triggered mainly by your thoughts, one that has little or no basis in reality, take a few slow, deep breaths. Call upon spirit helpers who have provided their guidance and protection before. Reach out to close friends or family members for reassurance and to help you feel grounded and centered. Recall those times in the past when you did not feel frightened or were endangered and not only survived, but came through intact. You can also re-label fear and instead call it excitement, as the two emotions are very similar in the way they manifest in the body. Most of all, trust your spirit guides, your instincts, and your friends to watch out for you.

TAROT

General

Temperance – Major Arcana Pages 40 to 41

New perspectives.

In perfect harmony, three dragons coil and turn through the skies, weaving strands of spiritual energy with their claws. The sky itself holds repeating patterns of spirals, symbolizing the primal matter of creation-destruction that is all around us. One dragon is blue; another is shades of red; the third , shades of green. Red symbolizes vibrant life energies and sexual drive; green the productiveness of the mind; blue, the watery instability of emotion. All these must be twined together in equal parts in order to temper and modify life experiences, so that what is out of balance (intemperate) can be corrected. An elongated, golden lemniscate (a figure eight) of eternal life twine through the spinning circle of dragons, representing that a balanced life cannot exist without the important element of spirit.

Divinatory Meaning: This card may presage a period of creative inspiration, or a time of harmony and peacefulness. Self-control and inner guidance will get you through difficulties. A trip gives you a new perspective on an old issue. You need to atapt to new circumstances.

Love

Two of Swords – Minor Arcana Pages 88 to 89

Tension; Indecision

A Fire dragon holds two long swords in its claws, as it faces a man across an opening, blazing vent in the rocky ground. The only connection to the other side is a narrow bridge without railings. The man hesitates, one foot on the bridge, one foot on solid ground. One of his hands are outstretched to take a sword, but he must cross to get one. Celtic spirals are craved into the stark stones of the surrounding landscape. The bridge represents the link between the conscious and subconscious minds. The tenuous area of the mind can be a frightening place when one is learning to join the psychic senses with everyday, common-sense deductions in order to make better decisions. The only way to cross the bridge is to walk across without analyzing the potential for defeat or looking down at the dangerous fires below. The strength to take action can be drawn from knowledge of the meaning of the Celtic spirals; any momentary failure can be a stepping stone to a new opportunity.

Divinatory Meaning: There is tension and indecision in relationships or friendships. You are having difficulty gaining a sense of balance because you have no definite plans to the direction you want to go. You are faced with having to balance two important things in life without being able to make a firm decision.

Eight of Wands – Minor Arcana Pages 72 to 73

Movement; urgency.

Eight dragons fly across a deep, mysterious void of a cosmic sky, each one holding a crystal-topped wand. Starlight flashes of the crystal tips of the wand. The star are spiritual beacons that guide those who journey through life. Oftentimes, those on a real life journey as if they are in a bottomless void, no direction to guide them out of the situation. This is the time to call upon your personal dragon guardians, look within for spiritual direction, and use your willpower (wand) to find your way to your goal.

Divinatory Meaning: Barriers fall and events move quickly. Urgent messages of a positive nature come your way. You may take a journey; possibly by air.

Wealth

Six of Pentacles – Minor Arcana Pages 152 to 153

Just rewards

A large dragon holds out a claw filled with coins to an old man with a cane. Beside the dragon, a little girl in tattered clothing hugs the dragon. The unlimited forces of the Universe work on the constant balancing of positive and negative. All we need do is seek and ask for the help we need. The child represents the hidden seed of trust and confidence within each of us that leads to a new cycle, even though we may be in the midst of sorrow. The child is completely unafraid of universal forces, subconsciously understanding that trust brings help and answers to our problems. Six pentacles can be seen on the cobblestones, leading from the struggling man to the glowing dragon. Our paths are full of signposts, directing us away from the negative and to the positive, if only we will be observant.

Divinatory Meaning: You will be receiving what is due you, positive or negative. Someone repays you a loan of money or time. Revive your outlook on life by helping others who are in need.

Tinne/Teine

T stands for Tinne, or Teine, the Holly tree. This evergreen plant is connected to immortality, unity, courage, and the stability of hearth and home. Pronounced chihnn-uh by the Celts, the wood of the Holly was often used in the construction of weapons, and is known as a plant of warriors and protectors.

In the pre-Christian British Isles, the Holly was often associated with protection–planting a hedge around your home would keep malevolent spirits out, thanks in no small part to the sharp spikes on the leaves. In Celtic myth, the concept of the Holly King and the Oak King symbolizes the changing of the seasons, and the transition of the earth from the growing time to the dying season.

When Christianity moved into the Celtic lands, the new religion associated the Holly plant with the story of Jesus. The poky spikes on the leaves represent the crown of thorns worn by Jesus on the cross, and the bright red berries symbolize his blood.

Tinne Correspondences

Mundane Aspects: Hang a sprig of Holly in your home to protect your family in your absence. Soak the leaves in spring water under a full moon, and then use the water as a blessing for people or items you wish to protect. There is strength to be found in standing together, and ultimately protection comes from honor and trust.

Magical Aspects: Develop the ability to respond quickly and wisely to your intuition. Learn to overcome and adapt to new situations, and to respond immediately to changes in your spiritual environment. Trust your instinct, but don’t let your heart rule over your head.

Tarot Card

Today’s Tarot Card Reading come from The English Magic Tarot by Rex Van Ryn, Steve Dooley and Andy Letcher Copyright 2015 (The unfamiliar terms used with this deck is in England’s English)

0 The Fool – Major Arcana

Pages 20 and 21

Description: A fool strides across the English countryside. He wears a fabulous multicolored costume. A hare gambols at his feet.

Interpretation: Here comes the Fool. Not a care in the world. Everything he says and does seems to turn out okay without his even trying. He’s the embodiment of effortless non-doing. All his possessions are wrapped up in just one knotted handkerchief. But is that mad look in his eye? Is he the village idiot, cuckoo-brained, a moon-calf? There’s a darker side to the Fool. He might be a trickster, an unraveller like Loki or Raven or Coyote or Efnysien, someone who brings chaos to the world, just because he can. He does suspiciously like Guy Fawkes. Or perhaps he’s the wise fool, able to speak when others cannot.

Traditionally, the Fool is regarded as the hero setting out on his magical quest. Of course, he starts from a state of pure innocence. Why else would he need to go adventuring? He needs to learn about himself and the world. That’s why his number is zero. Zero the hero. He starts with nothing.

Usually the Fool is accompanied by a small dog, but here Rex has given him a hare instead. According to mythology, the hare is wise and mad all at once, just like the Fool. As with any mammal that survives by running fast, hares have disproportionately large hearts—it’s what gives them oomph to escape the hounds. How appropriate. Like the hare, the Fool’s heart is huge and wide open. There might be a sheer drop in front of him, but he’d step right over and land without a scratch.

Reading: Embrace the Fool, take a leap into the dark. If he appears reversed, then it’s time to stop acting the fool. You’re not coming from a place of open-heartedness.

COLL/CALL

C, sometimes read as K, is Coll, which is the Hazel tree. August is known as the Hazel Moon, because this is when Hazel nuts appear on the trees–the world Coll translates to “the life force inside you”, and what better symbol of life than the nut itself? Hazel is associated with wisdom and creativity and knowledge. Sometimes it is connected in Celtic lore with magical springs, sacred wells, and divination.

Hazel was a handy tree to have around. It was used by many English pilgrims to make staffs for use upon the road–not only was it a sturdy walking stick, it also provided a modicum of self-defense for weary travelers. Certainly, it could have been used as well for ritual. Hazel was used in weaving of baskets by medieval folk, and the leaves were fed to cattle because it was believed this would increase the cow’s supply of milk.

In the Irish myth cycles, there is a tale that nine hazel nuts dropped into a sacred pool. A salmon came along in the pool and gobbled up the nuts, which then imbued him with wisdom. A variation of the story appears in the legend of Finn Mac Cumhail, who ate the salmon and then took on the knowledge and wisdom of the fish. Note that Mac Cumhail is often translated as Mac Coll.

Coll Correspondences

Mundane Aspects: Take advantage of your own artistry or creativity, and share your knowledge with others so they too can practice these arts. Lead by example, and teach those who wish to learn. Find inspiration for your creative gifts, whatever your talent may be.

Magical Aspects: Let the divine guide you in your creative journey. Speak to the gods through your art, and be rewarded with inspiration. If you’re stuck in a creative rut, call upon the Divine to send you a Muse.

For an adventurer and risk-taker who has a hard time staying in one place, one job, or one relationship, the 5 is surprisingly loyal when the right partner comes along.

The 2 and the 6 are known as the most harmonious relationship numbers. Still, both will cheat on a partner when temptation is strong enough. The 5 will not. The 5 may break off a relationship due to their restless nature, but they will rarely deceive a partner. Although, when they are not in a committed relationship, they have no problem dating a different person every day of the week

The 5 generally doesn’t find a suitable career until they’ve tried several different jobs, some barely lasting long enough to warrant a full paycheck. This is especially true if there is monotonous routine involved; boredom sets in quickly for the 5 who simply cannot stand predictable, repetitive work.

But again, the 5 will surprise friends and family once they find their niche. This usually happens after age 30 when their focus, energy, and quick mind help them scramble up the ladder (faster, and with less apparent effort, than those around them).

Many 5s choose careers that require travel or otherwise offer a regular change of environment. People working in the travel industry, small business owners, independent consultants, lawyers, and those in sales often have the 5 in their core numbers.

The 5 can adjust quickly to pretty much anything coming their way.

The 5 is versatile, adaptable, intelligent, progressive, and tolerant. Convention bores them, and they are easily drawn to the eccentrics and misfits of society.

A social creature, the 5 is funny and uplifting, good at making others feel comfortable around them. They are generally well-liked and often surrounded by friends and acquaintances. However, they can also be polarizing, so people that are typically uptight, self-righteous, or judgmental are quickly aggravated by them.

Perhaps the most dominating trait of the 5 is the uncompromising demand for freedom in thought and action.

People with a prominent 5 in their core numbers make up their own mind, rebel against dogma and ideology, and recoil from clubs, cults, and religious sects. Their adventurous, daredevil nature may include riding motorcycles, but they will not typically ride with a large group. Chances are a 5 will be opinionated and passionate about political issues, but will remain independent of formal political parties.

A 5 may change their mind (regularly) but not without good reason. They won’t be controlled but are flexible and can be converted if the argument makes sense. The 5 has a healthy sense of humor and doesn’t sweat the small things. They carry their heart on their sleeve, and it’s not uncommon to give that heart to the wrong person – they are not always the best judge of character.

On the negative side, the 5 can be selfish, thoughtless, and irresponsible.

Rarely considering the future beyond next week, worrying is not in their nature. The 5 tends to procrastinate and can be unreliable. However, their most common downfall is a tendency to experiment with sex, drugs, alcohol, and other addictions. A desire for instant gratification, lack of restraint, and their feeling of invulnerability can be a recipe for disaster.

The shape of numbers reflect their nature, and just as the 4 is square and grounded, the 5 is a symbol of dynamic energy, elastic and constantly in motion.

HARE

Although hares and rabbits look similar, they have very different symbolism.  A hare is bigger than a rabbit, has longer ears, and possesses more powerful hind legs.  The two most abundant kinds are the European Brown Hare and the Snowshoe Hare.  The Snowshoe Hare is strongly linked to the Snowy Owl population, such that when hare populations are down, the owls stop breeding, and even die from starvation.  The hare is more solitary and tougher than the rabbit.  Hares don’t live in warrens or have maternity nests.  The young hares are born so well-developed that they can fend for themselves within a few hours of their birth.

The hare is associated with a number of myths from many different cultures.  The Algonquin tribe honored the Great Hare as a demiurge, a role in the creation of the world.  The Egyptians also saw the hare involved in a creation story.  For them, the hare came to mean procreation, and then immorality.  While the hare is often associated with impatience and haste (like the “Tortoise and the Hare” fable), it’s important to note that other cultures, like the Goths, saw the hare as fleet and swift, and symbols of diligence.  This reflects the attitudes of medieval hunters, who viewed hares as a challenge to catch.

Hare people are considered sensitive and artistic, and also linked with ambition, fitness, and virtue.  However, the hare is not just associated with positive things.  Hares are also thought of as greedy and selfish, even a bad example for people.  Hare is seen as a jokester, linked with trickery and fraud.  Even those with hare medicine are clever, often unreliable, and frequently thinking of themselves.

Although hare has some qualities that are less than redeeming, there are things he can teach us.  Because they move in leaping and hopping motions, those with rabbit and hare totems can expect changes in their own lives in the same kind of movement.  Hare can also aid people in recognizing the signs around them by attuning to lunar cycles and understanding the tides of movement in their own lives.

Tarot Cards

Today’s Tarot Card Reading come from The English Magic Tarot by Rex Van Ryn, Steve Dooley and Andy Letcher Copyright 2015 (The unfamiliar terms used with this deck is in England’s English)

General

King of Wands – A Court Card

Self-Interest; celebrity

Page 79

Description: A king sits upon a sumptuous throne. He’s dressed in rich fabrics and expensive clothes. He seems not to notice the wand propped up behind him.

Interpretation: There have always been dandies’ dedicated followers of fashion, but this guy takes the cake. His hair is tightly curled in a style, or a wig, that must have taken an army of hairdressers to prepare. His outrageous hat that supports plumes that would put a bird of paradise to shame. Look at the lace on his cuffs! Those frilly pantaloons! I can’t imagine there are any callouses on those manicured hands. No, he can sit there all day, preening in the mirror and ordering others about.

This is the ever-present celebrity, someone famous simply for being famous, with carte blanche to act as selfishly as they like. Although our king has inherited his throne, he’s forgotten his source of power. His wand stands behind him forlornly, like a broken curtain rail.

It’s good to dress up. Clothes afford us self-expression and allow us to move through social worlds. When we forgot it’s all a game, however, vanity and self-interest  result. We start believing our own hype.

Reading: You look absolutely fabulous, but you’re expending all of your creative energy on outward expression. Don’t squander creative talent on unimportant worldly things.

Love

Four of Cups

Secrets; lies; deceit; even to oneself

Page 102

Description: A man stands in front of a table considering a scroll. He’s in some kind of library and has a merciless air about him.

Interpretation: This man is a collector of secrets and whispers. He’s Sir Francis Walsingham, Elizabeth 1″s ruthless spymaster. Or he’s George Smiley or his nemesis Karla. He’s Varys from Gamed of Thrones. He knows all the secrets. He has books full of them. As every writer of a thriller knows, to possess people’s secrets is to have power over them, to play them. Someone is pulling the strings.

Yet we also have an inner spymaster who’s in full possession of our lies, our half0truths, deceptions, and transgressions. He’s not exactly our conscience. Spymaster aren’t angles. But he knows when we’re lying to ourselves, and that is the worse lie of all. How can we hope to be true to others, if we’re not true to ourselves? When we lie to ourselves, we end up needy of others, constantly asking them to make for the deficiency we feel inside. It’s extremely tiring to be around someone who constantly says, “I am the greatest at this!” or “I am the best at that!” when we all know they aren’t. But when we’re open and honest to ourselves, the spymaster loses all power. He can’t touch us. He can’t get a purchase.

Reading: Is someone keeping something from you, or you from them?

King of Cups – A Court Card

Balance; emotions contained through self-discipline

Page 111

Description: A king sits on a throne, which is a giant cup. He isn’t armoured and doesn’t wear a crown. He looks at the world askance.

Interpretation: The King of Cups appears a little stern, but I think he’s a good king, He’d probably treat you fairly. However, if you look closely, you’ll see he has a prize fighter’s nose that has been broken more than once. And those fists. They’d crack your jaw with one easy hook. He’s seen many a brawl, many a scrap.

The fact that his throne is a giant cup suggests he’s in control of his emotions now, that when the red mist comes down he can hold the anger back, keep it in check. But the cup is pretty huge and he’s had to work hard to keep all that emotion from brimming over. Whatever he did in his youth, the king has completed an anger management course and is a better person for it. He’s a spiritual warrior has achieved self-mastery. The he has found inner balance is indicated by his symmetrical posture. He encourages us to find the still point within, to calm the ripples, an be still.

Reading: The card suggests self-mastery and self-disipline, the containment of emotions.

Wealth

Fortune – Number 10 in the Major Arcana

Fate; impermanence; changing times

Pages 40 and 41

Description: A Romany fortune teller steps out barefoot over the rolling chalk uplands, know in England as the Downs. The entire tarot deck wheels about her, all except for three cards that tumble to the floor.

Interpretation: Traditionally this card depicts an allegorical scene: a hand cranks the wheel of destiny. As the wheel turns, it raises some up to greatness, while others casts others down from their lofty heights. It’s salutary reminder that fortunes change.

Here the wheel is the tarot itself, whirling around a Romany fortune teller. The cards falling to the floor are going to reveal exactly which way the wheel is turning.

Our Fortune is kind of a fantasy Gypsy you’d want to run away with, like the “Gyptians” from fairy tale or folk song. But can you trust her? IS she everything she seems? Do you really want to know what she sees with those piercing eyes of hers? What if it’s not good news? Those clouds rising behind her could be fluffy clouds of fine weather, or the billowing galleons of a summer storm.

To work with the tarot—-to seek to know —is risky. There’s always the chance that you’ll learn something you’d rather not. The lesson of Fortune is that, for good or bad, everything changes. The wheel never stops turning. Enjoy what you have, right now, for you never know what’s coming in the morning.

Reading: At it’s simplest, this card indicates changing fortunes. How the card is placed in the spread, and whether or not it’s reversed will suggest that change is for better or worse. Whatever the world throws at us, we can choose how to respond. In that sense, we make our own fortune.

Gort

G is Gort, the Ivy that sometimes grows freely, but often parasites upon other plants. It will grow in nearly any condition, and its endless upward spiral is representative of our soul’s search for self, as we wander between this world and the next. Gort, pronounced go-ert, is connected to growth and wildness, as well as confronting the mystical aspects of our own development and evolution. Also connected to the month of October and the Samhain sabbat, Ivy often lives on after its host plant has died–a reminder to us that life goes on, in the endless cycle of life, death and rebirth.

In folklore from the British Isles, Ivy is believed to be a bringer of good fortune, particularly to women. Allowing it to creep up the walls of your home would protect inhabitants from baneful magic and curses. It also appears in love divination in parts of England; it was said that a girl carrying Ivy in her pockets would soon see the young man who was meant to be her husband. Medicinally, an Ivy tonic could be brewed to keep away diseases such as whooping cough and respiratory ailments It was even believed to keep away the plague, but there’s no clear evidence that this worked.

Gort Correspondences

Mundane Aspects: Banish the negative things from your life, and eliminate toxic relationships. Place a barricade of some sort between you and the things or people that would bring you down.

Magical Aspects: Look inward to find self-growth, but turn outward to find spiritual companionship with like-minded individuals. If you’ve thought about joining or forming a group of some sort, consider it well if Gort appears.

Description: In this coat of arms we see the Holy Grail. The legend reads “water my blood” and urges us “to keep silent.”

It’s the beginning of some new emotional journey. It’s the first flush of love and the aching love of life. It’s a pure feeling. It’s the Holy Grail.

Reading: The Ace of Cups represents a spring, a fountain, and the opening up of emotions. It signifies love of every kind, from romantic love to friendship. If the card is reversed then something is damming the water supply, leading to stagnation. Unlock the channels. Remember how to feel.

Onn/Ohn

O is Onn, or Ohn, and represents the Gorse bush, sometimes called Furze. This yellow, flowery shrub grows on moors all year long, and is full of nectar and pollen. It’s a food source for many animals–the stalks are munched on by grazing livestock–but eventually Furze is set on fire. This controlled burn allows old deadwood to be gotten rid of, and clears the way for new life to begin. Gorse (Furze) represents long-term thinking and planning–knowing that sometimes we have to do without in order to gain things in the future. Gorse is a determined sort of plant that always comes back, and so it is also connected with perseverance and hope.

In some pieces of Celtic folklore, the Gorse is used as a protective barrier. Planting it around one’s home would keep the Sidhe away, and it can be shaped into a broom for sweeping away negative influences.

Ohn Correspondences

Mundane Aspects: Whatever you’ve been looking for is right around the corner–keep pursuing your goals, because they are within your reach. If you aren’t sure what path you should be on or which direction you should head, sit down and make a list of goals. Figure out the destination, and then you’ll be able to focus on the journey.

Magical Aspects: Your spiritual journey has provided you with an abundance of gifts. Don’t keep these blessings to yourself–share them with others! If you’ve been asked to take on a role as leader or mentor, now is the time to do so.

“The polarities of your spiritual pursuits and physical pleasures are out of balance, so do whatever is necessary to bring them back into equilibrium”

Pages 24 to 26

When on a spiritual path, it’s easy to idealize what being spiritual means. It can become a rigid mental imprint upon which you judge anything that varies from your conceptualization of what “being spiritual” is suppose to be about. This includes not only another person’s practices and beliefs, but your own. Falling short of this idealism leads to either assuming a righteous and arrogant position with others, or when self-imposed, elicits guilt and shame.

This spiritual perfectionism can make you reticent about enjoying the pleasures of the material world, as well as those of your physical body. The Earth Herself provides a dazzling and sensual panorama of experiences to be directly encountered through the physical senses. Yet for many, truly enjoying the pleasures of senses of sight, sound, taste, touch, and smell can be fraught with worry, anxiety, guilt, and shame—products of early childhood religious and/or cultural conditioning. Others become so entangled in the world of senses that it becomes their god, and their spiritual core is lost to materiality.

To be polarized in one direction or another takes you either to lofty heights and iridescent abstractions that are completely ungrounded, or else causes you to become caught up in the glue of the mundane world without the guiding light of Spirit to provide a locus of authority. With the blessing of your awareness, you can redirect your thoughts and actions towards that which brings greater balance and fluidity between two polarities.

King of Swords – A Court Card

The price of success; the cruel logic of revolution; despotism

Page 95

Description: A solider has won his battles. He stands by the crown and executioner’s block.

Interpretation: Here’s Oliver Cromwell, who ended up toppling the king and ruling England as monarch in all but name. Behind his the block on which he had Charles 1 executed. Between his feet is the crown. He’s won! So why’s he looking so rueful?

In the distance we see a bucking horse, the same horse that threw the Knight of Swords from his saddle. Ah, so the Knight was Cromwell! Well now the battle’s over. He’s got what he wanted and now he must live by the consequences. In Cromwell’s case, he ended up becoming a killer and the very kind of despot that he fought against in the first place. He should have read Shakespeare: “{Uneasy lies the head that wears the crown.”

The card is a warning then to be careful what you wish for. You may have good, reasonable cause—yet there’ll be consequences that could strip you of the happiness you hoped for. The chopping block indicates that they’ll be bloody. Cromwell could have stayed home on his farm. We probably wouldn’t remember him, but he might have had a longer, easier, and happier life. He might have died with his conscience clear.

Reading: Be careful what you wish for. It’s much harder being a king than it looks.

The High Priestess – 2 Major Arcana

Dreams; psychic powers; mythos

 Page 24

Description: An older woman plunges her hands into a river. The light of the nearly full moon is reflected in the water. A Younger woman rises up from the depths.

Interpretation: Have you ever been stopped in your tracks by the moon? The feeling is one of enchantment, as if the veils that separate the worlds have been lifted momentarily. One may feel a strong urge to curtsy or bow. The High Priestess embodies that feeling. If the Magician is all about craft, then the High Priestess speaks of intuition, of dream, and the possibility of psychic powers. If the Magician represents logos, the power of the word, then the High Priestess represents mythos, the stuff beyond words. When we stumble across the High Priestess, the hair on our neck stands up and we are stopped in our tracks.

The writer Robert Graves was a lover of mythos. He always bowed nine times to the new moon, while turning a silver coin. He gave us the idea that ancient cultures had worshipped a triple moon goddess: Maiden, Mother, and Crone. We see all three here. The Crone plunges her hands into a reflection of the nearly full moon (the Mother), and is met by the Maiden, who raises up from the water, as if to kiss her. The river is the Thames, chosen not just because it is the most characteristic of English rivers, but because in Oxford the Thames is called the Isis. Isis, the Graeco-Egyptian lunar goddess, is the deity most associated with the High Priestess.

Reading: The High Priestess invites us to pay attention to mythos. Perhaps the answer to your question will come in dreams or the ink-black surface of a scrying bowl.

Health

The Devil – 15 Major Arcana

The shadow; your nemesis

Pages 50 and 51

Description: The Devil stands on the edge of a cliff, under the light of the full moon. A naked couple are walking helplessly towards him.

Interpretation: People dread the Devil, and not without good reason. Two thousand years of Christianity have enshrined him as the epitome of evil. Just look at the couple coming over the hill. Their night of illicit pleasure has turned into a 1970s folk horror movie. The Devil is drawing them inexorably towards their terrible end.

However, it’s silly to suppose evil comes from anywhere but from inside us. The devil represents all our uncomfortable feelings, the ones the evoke guilt and anger, secret and narcissistic fantasies. He’s our shadow side. No wonder we externalize him. It’s so much easier to blame someone else for our discomfort, to drive the scapegoat from the village. Trouble is, when we do, we find we’re still dangling from the devil’s puppet strings.

In narrative times, the devil is there to test us. Every thesis needs its antithesis. Every hero needs a villain. Where would James Bond be without Ernst Stavro Blofeld? Batman without the Joker? Luke without Darth Vader? The devil is the adversary we have to best, the obstacle we have to overcome. Is he dangerous? Damn right! Adventure means nothing if it isn’t risky. But we overcome him by trying not to banish him, but by bring him into the clear light of day.

Reading: The Devil indicates a challenge, an obstacle to be overcome. That might be an external obstacle, a person standing in your way for example, or it might mean some part of yourself that you’re refusing to acknowledge.

Wealth

Temperance – 14 Major Arcana

Stillness; balance

Pages 48 and 49

Description: A woman dips her head into a pool. She’s framed by two willow trees. She holds two cups behind her back and pours liquid from one to the other. A big cat stands on a tumulus behind her.

Interpretation: Here, everything is in balance. The willow trees show summer and winter in perfect equipoise. The woman is lightly balanced between earth and water, all the while performing some extraordinary feat of juggling behind her back. Is that cloth pouring from her cups, or water? Blood, even? She doesn’t spill a single drop. You can imagine the contents running back and forth from one to the other eternally.

One of the four, medieval cardinal virtues, Temperance has had something of bad press late. Oscar Wilde famously quipped, “Everything in moderation, including moderation.” When I think of temperance, I imagine self-righteous Sunday morning moralizers wagging a finger at our Saturday night misdemeanors, or of a sweaty Sergeant Howie in The Wicker Man, slapping the wall, as he desperately attempts to reign in his cardinal desires. If only he hadn’t. Yet the moderation depicted here is effortless, requiring neither self-flagellation nor self-congratulation. It speaks of a much easier kind of balance, the balance on which the universe rests.

All extremes flow into each other. Star are born and die. Summer becomes winter becomes summer again. Full becomes empty. The wheel turns. Accept this simple truth and nothing can knock you from your feet.

Reading: Temperance encourages us to find balance in our lives, the still waters of this place. If reversed, things have become out of balanced, perhaps dangerously so. Let the governing tides of the universe draw things back to equilibrium again.

Amhancholl

Ae (sometimes represented as X or Xi), is Amhancholl or Eamhancholl, associated with Witch Hazel. This natural astringent is purifying and cleansing. The word Eamhancholl literally translates to “twin of Hazel”, so there is a strong connection to C–Coll in the Ogham. When Amhancholl appears, it’s usually an indicator that cleansing and purification is necessary or has taken place.

From a purely medicinal standpoint, Witch Hazel has long been used as a cleanser and astringent. Native American tribes turned it into a poultice which was used to treat swelling and tumors. Amongst the early settlers, midwives arriving in the New World found that it could be used to prevent sepsis following childbirth or an abortion. Today, it’s still in use as a treatment for skin inflammations, such as insect bites, mild burns, and even hemorrhoids.

Amhancholl Correspondences

Mundane Aspects: When this symbol appears, it means it’s time for a cleansing. Sometimes this is a physical cleansing of our Self, but often it applies to emotional clutter and baggage. Smudge your home, get rid of all the negative energies around you, and allow yourself to purify both your body and your mind.

Magical Aspects: This is a good indicator that you need to do a re-evaluation of your spiritual life. Are you studying things that no longer interest you? Are you hanging on to books or other magical items that you know you’ll never need–or worse, that you really dislike? If you’re feeling stagnant, or that you’re drifting a bit on a spiritual level, when this symbol appears it probably means you need to rethink your priorities. What are your spiritual goals? Do a cleansing ritual, and help yourself begin anew.

Numerology Number

From NUMEROLOGY SINGLE DIGIT NUMBERS

Among the nine single-digit numbers, the 1 holds a special place in numerology.

The Numerology Meaning of the Number 1: THE PRIMAL FORCE

From a spiritual perspective, the 1 is the number of creation – the primal force from which all other numbers spring forth. Some say once you truly understand the place and function of this elemental number, enlightenment will be yours.

This statement doesn’t apply to a Numerologist’s perspective alone, but perhaps it’s a good place to start since the personality of the number 1 aligns nicely with its elevated spiritual symbolism.

The 1 is a doer, a powerful force that produces results.

The 1 is aggressive – a necessary trait for creating, and not allowing anything to limit its potential. The 1 is the spearhead, always in the forefront directing and leading others.

The shape of this number reflects its meaning; the 1 walks upright with pride and purpose – strong, determined, and unwavering with a specific goal in mind. The 1 is capable of turning ideas into reality – pushing obstacles aside or simply drilling right through them.

The 1 tends to have a simple, straightforward view of life, heedless of its many complexities.

An individual with the dynamic 1 trusts their ability to separate right from wrong, doesn’t waste time on abstract ideas, and rarely follows a path that isn’t in line with their result-oriented goal. The 1 is no preacher, no philosopher, spiritual explorer, nor dreamer – and certainly not an idealist. They are pragmatic, ruthless conquerors, and warriors extraordinaire. The 1 is individualistic and independent to a fault. They will attempt to force their viewpoint on you but have no desire to hear yours.

The 1 can be confrontational, jealous, and exceedingly stubborn, but also courageous and willing to try anything new (with promise) even at great risk. They have a sense of honor and responsibility that demands respect and are the first to defend injustice and hypocrisy.

Befriend a 1 and you have a friend for life.

Fortunately, the 1 has a great capacity for humor, often self-depreciating, so you can poke fun at your friend and not worry about hurt feelings. But don’t cater to them to win love or friendship or you will lose their respect. Stand up to a 1 and you may lose the fight, but you’ll gain admiration. Working for a 1 you will be pushed to the limit, abused at all hours, and incapable of living up to unreasonable expectations. But you will also become the best you can be.

When in trouble, you want a friend with a strong 1 on your side, and you won’t find a braver partner or a more dedicated protector. But, if the 1 is your enemy, you could be crushed without mercy. And be forewarned, the number 1 is the most difficult of all lovers, demanding, jealous, confrontational, and impatient.

If you have a 1 in your core numbers, your happiness and sense of satisfaction will come from your work more than any other source.

“Keep your sense of humor, and don’t take things so seriously”

Pages 102 to 104

It’s so tempting to view life in all of its many manifestations, permutations, and variations as something to be taken quite seriously, yet this is exactly the opposite of what you need to do right now. No matter what the situation, look for the humor in it. It may take time to find something, but if you look for it with this attitude in mind, you begin to see the absurdities and ironies inherent in whatever shows up in life, even in the darkest circumstances. Maintaining a healthy sense of humor about most experiences causes you to be lighter in spirit, to smile unabashedly, and to appreciate life that much more. Turn that scowl upside down by doing what makes you openly laugh.

Of course there are certainly times that require a more serious demeanor. Tragedies or traumatic experiences don’t call for cheerfulness and humor. When events occur, appropriate social restrictions apply that demand the expression of emotions congruent with the circumstances. However, these instances are temporary and all like things, will soon pass. Other than these kinds of situations, life’s ironies and absurdities abound. Rather than feeling personally victimized by these vagaries take a deep breath, see the humor in the situation, and have a laugh!

THE NUMEROLOGY MEANING OF DOUBLE-DIGIT NUMBERS

Thus far, we have worked only with single-digit numbers with the exception of the Master numbers and the Karmic Debt numbers. Now, let’s look at the numbers 10 and up.

single-digit number can be based on different compound numbers.

The 7, for instance, can be based on 16, 25, 34, 43, 52, 61, 70, 79, 88, and 97. Although they all reduce to 7, each changes the personality of the 7 to some extent. In some cases, the changes are quite dramatic, such as when the double-digit number is a Master number or a Karmic Debt number.

When a single-digit number is based on a double-digit number, it’s a good habit to include it in the numerology chart.

If a 7 is based on 25, write 25/7, if it’s based on 34 write 34/7.

A double-digit number’s characteristics are dominated by that of the single-digit to which it reduces. The double-digit number highlights certain aspects and diminishes others, but it never eliminates any aspect completely.

For example, a 7 based on 25 is not as withdrawn as a 7 based on a 16, while a 7 based on 34 is more creative than other 7s.

NUMEROLOGY MEANING OF NUMBERS 1 – 9

The single-digit numbers 1 – 9 form the foundation of Numerology.

In numerology, each number has its own personality, its strengths, talents, shortcomings, and idiosyncracies.

To gain insight into the way numbers affect us, it helps to view each number as if it were a person with unique traits, instead of a list of positive and negative qualities. It should be noted that my description of single-digit numbers illustrate their extremes – and no one has just one number or characteristic.

While all multiple-digit numbers are eventually reduced to single-digit numbers by adding the digits and reducing them (for example, 15 is reduced to 6 by adding 1 and 5), the double-digit numbers also have specific meanings, especially if they are Master numbers (11, 22, or 33), or Karmic Debt numbers (13, 14, 16, or 19).

JUSTICE

There is at least one person in your life who needs to be addressed with a little bit of tough love. You have to be fair, of course, and think through the situation carefully to make sure that you understand completely. This person may be somebody you love or need, but criticism must be delivered, however blunt or insensitive you may be perceived by speaking your mind. A heartfelt letter may be in order, even if done at a distance.

“Music is essential to your healing and well-being, whether sing, playing an instrument, or listening”

In order to diagnose their patients, one of the questions, that shamans often asked was when the patient stopped singing. If it had been quite some time, the shaman was certain to recommend sing (among other remedies) as an essential aspect of recovery. All that’s involved when you sing — the fullness and rhythm of your breathing, the opening of your mouth and jaw, and the soulful and creative expressions of your spirit — serves to enhance your health and raise your vibrations.

Similarly, playing an instrument can touch those inner creative depths that yearn to be expressed through song. Simply Listening with your full attention to you favorite tune or melody can also inspire and heal. Make music as essential to your lifestyle as eating and breathing.

You can breach the inhibitions about expressing yourself musically that you’ve acquired over the years in some very simple and easy ways: Sing, chant, or play an instrument! Take a few voice lessons as a means to shore up your confidence. Let the magical child inside help you rediscover the joy of creating music. Dive in and play!

General Tarot Card

Three of Coins

This suit, most often named “Coins” or “Pentacles”, is a symbol for a magical talisman that represented wealth or potential. This suit represents something supportive that is available to you — whether it be health, some kind of talent, a material or financial resource.

The Three is traditionally the card of genius. Here we usually see a master craftsman conferring with his masons on the installation of a beautiful stained-glass window in the cathedral. This designer is often likened to Leonardo da Vinci or Michelangelo, a multi-talented visionary who has no peers in talent or productivity.

The masterwork is being proudly showcased for future generations, as an object of personal and collective pride. On some cards, the genius is portrayed at his studio, alone and burning the midnight oil, in a creative ferment — driven to draw, paint, invent, or whatever work genius wants to bring into creation. As a subtext to the rewards of genius are the days and weeks of intense concentration it takes to solve the problems that great works entail.

The Empress

Keywords: ideas, creative impulses, intellect!

Astrological Correspondence: Venus

The Empress signifies the queen of life, the ideal woman, the archetypal mother. She represents the matriarchal goddess, being part of nature, fertility, sexuality, and the generative forces. As the life-giving mother she is connected to the Earth and the natural rhythms, the appreciation of the senses. As a card of good fortune she signifies that if we are gentle and caring, as well as patient, we can bring anything to fruition; we have to be able to wait until the time is right for action so that we can reap the rewards; as a result, hard work pays off and relationships become satisfying. The Empress can, in negative situations, also depict vanity, undeveloped creativity, stagnation, and apathy.

Wild Horses: Symbols of Freedom or Trouble Makers? A Look at the Controversy

Wild horses spark intense debates about land management and resource allocation, but we can look to global pastoralists for compromises.

Modoc County lies in the far northeast corner of California, and most of its 10,000 residents rely on cattle herding, logging, or government jobs for employment. Rodeos and 4-H programs fill most families’ calendars; massive belt buckles, blue jeans, and cowboy hats are common attire. Modoc’s niche brand of American individualism stems from a free-spirited cowboy culture that imbues the local ranching conflict with wild horses. GENERAL

Pages 106 and 107

Page of Swords – Court Card – Impulsiveness; troubles.

A young boy holds up a tiny, baby Fire Dragon on one hand, delight and fascination on his face. Behind him on the wall hangs a great Celtic sword and shield. At his feet lies a rolled scroll, symbolic of a spiritual message. However, the boy does not notice the second baby Fire dragon has set fire to the scroll. Because of his inattention, he does not receive the message. The shield not only represents protection, but personal identity. Knights paint identifying marks on their shields so they would know friend from foe. The sword of strength and defense hangs ready for use. By allowing himself to become obsessed with his new discovery, the boy has failed to be aware of what happens around him. Small events (the second little dragon) can cause destruction if one does not remain alert.

Divinatory Meaning: You may have an impulsive desire for new experiences that could cause problems. Be warned of unexpected danger. This card is an advance notice of a troubled period in life.

LOVE

Page 114 and 115

Ace of Cups – Joyful; fertile period

Baby dragons are hatching out of a nest floating on the waters of a gentle stream below the waterfall. One hatched baby is looking at her reflections in the water, while another leans contently against her. A third baby struggles out of it’s shell, while a fourth is settling itself for a peaceful nap. All humans, at whatever stage of life, begin their seeking for spiritual and/or emotional growth and knowledge with naivete and innocence children. They are innocent of the difficulties and perils that may lay ahead and at the same time enthusiastic to get started on their journey.  Some get caught up in admiring themselves and what they believe they can do, while other are content just to bask in the sunlight and lean on others. Still others struggle through obstacles and become stronger for this. The waterfall and chalice are symbolic of the endless stream of lives the proceed from and return to the Goddess and God.

Divinatory Meaning: New beginnings in your life will fill you with joy and contentment. Your spiritual growth will expand and take you to a higher level of understanding. There is the possibility of new love. This card can also herald a possible pregnancy, so take care if this is not what you want. This can also foretell a fertile period for ideas.

HEALTH

Pages 120 and 121

Four of Cups – Old memories; dissatisfaction

A woman studies a chalice she holds in her hands. On the table before her sit three different chalices. The chalices are all empty; one is on its side, with water pouring out. The woman is completely lost in her memories, which she has reconstructed to suit her present frame of mind, but they are not real (the empty chalices). She has drained these memories of anything value and not bothered to fill them again. She prefers to live in false dreams rather than become involved in life. Four tiny Water dragons sit and lie on the table, symbols of the love, companionship, and emotional abundance that could be hers if she would acknowledge them.

Divinatory Meaning: Stop dwelling on old memories. A relationship tested. You are experiencing illogical dissatisfaction with a relationship or job; step back and look at the problem before taking any action.

WEALTH

Pages 110 AND 111

Queen of Swords – Court Card – Learning lessons; manipulation

The Queen of Swords is a mature woman who walks through a pit of fire with confidence. Although the flames flare around her on all sides, her face is calm, her eyes straight ahead. She has learned that life offers both positive and negative learning experiences and that one becomes stronger by refusing to give in to fear an despair. In one hand she carries a raised sword, while the other rests on the head of a Fire dragon who is mostly hidden behind her and from whose mouth issues more flames. The sword represents the Queen’s faith in her ability to fight her way through any adversity, while the huge dragon-companion symbolizes astral and spiritual teachers who are always beside us, not to impede our progress by making life to smooth, but to guide our steps through any “trial” to safety. The Queen wears a crown with a triangular-shaped, red stone in front, symbolic of her connectedness with both the Goddess and her own feminine power. Three little Fire dragons frolic in the flames, encouraging her to continue her path.

Divinatory Meaning: This card indicates a powerful feminine influence. You will be faced with with a period in your life that makes you learns an important lesson you have avoided. Be careful getting your way in something through manipulation, for later this action will come back to haunt you.

UILLEAN

Ui (sometimes interpreted as Pe) is Uillean, the Honeysuckle. Associated with the manifestation of will, the Honeysuckle starts as a small seed and creeps along, growing and spreading over time. Honeysuckle twists and spirals up and over its surroundings, its soft yellow flowers releasing a sweet scent. It is the flower of unspoken desire, hidden needs, secret wants, but it also represents our goals of finding our true Self.

From a medicinal standpoint, the honeysuckle can be useful as well. Dioscorides says,

“the ripe seed gathered and dried in the shadow and drunk for four days together, doth waste and consume away the hardness of the spleen and removeth wearisomeness, helpeth the shortness and difficulty of breathing, cureth the hicket (hiccough), etc. A syrup made of the flowers is good to be drunk against diseases of the lungs and spleen.”

Uillean Correspondences

Mundane Aspects: When this symbol appears, it means you need to allow yourself the freedom to pursue your desire. If you’ve got hopes or dreams that are unattained, now is your time to start considering whether they’re remain just dreams, or become reality. Denying yourself the chance to enjoy life is unfair.

Magical Aspects: Take the time to experience joy, but make sure you stay true to your values and beliefs as well. In many Wiccan traditions, the Charge of the Goddess is quoted as a reminder of this: All acts of love and pleasure are my rituals. Another aspect of this symbol is that sometimes, mysteries which seem to be hidden may not be as hard to delve into as you think–sometimes, you’ve just been sidetracked by distractions.

Numerology Number

From NUMEROLOGY SINGLE DIGIT NUMBERS

Eight

The most misunderstood number in numerology.

The Numerology Meaning of the Number 8: BALANCE & POWER

In Numerology, both novices and professionals alike tend to focus on the “money and power” image of the 8. Often when a client requests a name change consultation, it’s because they want to add 8s to their chart with the mistaken belief it will bring them money and power.

It is true that the 8, more than any other number, emphasizes the areas of career, business, finances, and authority.

As with other single-digit numbers, the shape reflects its most important attribute; in the case of the 8 it signifies balance. The 8 is the great Karmic Equalizer, a force that creates just as efficiently as it destroys. When the 8 comes knocking, you can be assured you will reap what you’ve sown.

The 8 creates a balance between the material and spiritual worlds.

At its best, it is as spiritual as it is materialistic. The sacred side of the 8 is practical, rational, and intelligent. It knows the difference between make-believe and genuine realization.

On the material plane, it is focused on results – often in the form of money – yet it doesn’t care about acquiring wealth merely for the sake of being wealthy. It is not greedy; it sees money as a tool not an end-result. It is generous and willing to take risks.

People with strong 8s in their charts often make and lose fortunes more than once during their life.

The 8 doesn’t consider bankruptcy a reason to slow down or feel sorry for themselves – and they usually come out stronger and more success-oriented than before.

Some of the more recognizable traits of the 8 are drive, ambition, authority, efficiency, organization, management, discipline, and control. Individuals with the 8 in their core numbers are goal-oriented, focused, have good judgment, are discriminate, and practical. In short, the 8 is a realist.

Its closest relative is the 1, as both numbers are powerful, have strong leadership skills, and will not shy away from confrontation. While the 1 lacks diplomatic skills and an understanding of human nature (typical traits of the 2), the 8 does exhibit those abilities. This is perhaps the principal reason why the 8 tends to do well in business and authority roles – the military and law enforcement also attract many 8s.

When the 8 appears in your personality profile chart, it indicates the presence of the character traits mentioned earlier as well as the potential to be successful and prosperous. Hence, the reason so many people hope to manipulate their charts by adding one or more 8s.

While the 8 carries enticing gifts, its energy needs to be supported by other numbers for it to flourish. The 4 helps keep an eye on the all-important details, and the 9 keeps the 8 in touch with their humanity.

Be careful what you ask for.

If you decide to change your name to add one or more 8s to your profile, the rest of your chart must be able to support this strong force. If the 8 is out of balance, you may inherit more of its negative attributes, like frustration, dissatisfaction, anger, aggression, greed, intolerance, hate… and insomnia.

A higher-than-average percentage of 8s find their way into the top echelons of society, but you will also find a disproportionate number of 8s among the homeless.

If the 8 appears in your cycles – especially your Essence cycle – it carries an increase in energy and focus, a newfound sense of motivation, and enhanced self-confidence. The shape of the 8 shows balance, but it also reveals confidence, as it looks you right in the eye. A constructive 8 is honest to a fault, generous, and forgiving. They can be physically imposing or athletic and tend to excel in sports requiring strength and endurance.

Most 8s are not particularly romantic in the traditional sense, as they prefer a more practical and straight-forward approach. Still, they are loving and more than carry their weight in relationships.

As with all single-digit numbers, the 8 has a positive and a negative side.

One mystery of Numerology is that there is a small number of people who, from an early age on and for no discernible reason, seem to turn the opposite direction of what their charts indicate. “Seem” is the keyword here. This phenomenon is found with all numbers, but it appears to affect 8s more than others. There are quite a few people whose charts are dominated by 8s that become priests, missionaries, humanitarians, and so forth. However, even those selfless, loving individuals tend to be skilled in fundraising, money management, and authority.
