Elder Moon: November 24 – December 23

American Elder Tree

From LearnReligions.com

The winter solstice has passed, and the Elder moon is a time of endings. Although the Elder can be damaged easily, it recovers quickly and springs back to life, corresponding to the approaching New Year. Called Ruish by the Celts (pronounced roo-esh), the month of Elder is a good time for workings related to creativity and renewal. It is a time of beginnings and endings, births and deaths, and rejuvenation. Elder is also said to protect against demons and other negative entities. Use in magic connected to Faeries and other nature spirits.

Ireland Elder Tree

From Ireland-Calling.com

Elder – a tree sacred to the Celts

In Ireland, the elder was considered a sacred tree and, like the hawthorn, it was forbidden to cut one down. The elder tree was prized for its many uses culinary, medicinal and mystical.

Both the flowers and berries of the elder can be used to make wine. Elderflower wine was said to be drunk at the Beltane celebrations and elderberries were made into a wine at Samhain which was consumed to promote divination and hallucinations.

Ogham, the mysterious language of the trees The Origins of the Ogham alphabet are still a mystery for many historians, but it is primarily thought to be an early form of the Irish written Language.
Ruis, R, Elder is the fifteenth letter in the ogham alphabet, Ruis, and the thirteenth and final month of the Celtic tree calendar.

Poisonous

The seeds, bark, leaves and flowers of the elder can be poisonous as is the unripe fruit so special care must have been taken when preparing such beverages.

The superstition of never cutting down an elder bush was not unique to Ireland. In Denmark, peasants never chopped an elder because Hyldemor, The Elder Mother, lived in the trunk.

This belief was possibly brought to the East of England by the Vikings and, even today, in Lincolnshire people ask permission from ‘The Old Lady’ before taking cuttings from the tree.

Christians gave elder a bad reputation

Christians believed that the elder tree was the tree that Judas hanged himself from, therefore making it unlucky. Some also believed the cross was made of elder wood. In fact the Christians gave the elder a bad reputation in general.

It was during Christian times that the elder became most associated with witches and many stories of ‘elder-witches’ spread throughout Ireland and Britain. This developed into an association with the devil.

To burn elder wood in your fire would bring the devil into your house.

Celts believed it protected the from evil spirits

It seems more likely that rather than a tree to be feared the elder was a highly respected tree in the old Celtic land. It was said to protect from evil spirits as well as inviting them.

Cradles were built from elder wood to protect babies and elder bushes were often planted around cattle to keep them healthy. It was believed that planting an elder near your house would also protect it from lightning.

At the same time, a flute made of elder could be used to summon spirits and, in Scotland, if you stand under an elder tree at Samhain you will be able to see the fairies riding by.

Full Moon Guide: October – November 2022

The Next Full Moon

The next full moon is the Hunter’s Moon; the Travel, Dying Grass, Sanguine, or Blood Moon; the start of the Sukkoth Holiday; Shared Purnima; the end of Vassa; Pavarana; the Thadingyut Festival of Lights Moon; the end of the Phaung Daw U Pagoda Festival; the Boun Suang Huea or the Boat Racing Festival Moon; and Vap Poya.

The next full moon will be on Sunday afternoon, Oct. 9, 2022, appearing opposite the Sun in Earth-based longitude at 4:55 p.m. EDT. This will be on Monday morning from the Iran and Gulf Standard Time Zones eastward to the International Date Line. The Moon will appear full for about three days centered on this time, from Saturday morning through Tuesday morning.

One Moon, Many Names

As the full moon after the Harvest Moon, this will be the Hunter’s Moon. The earliest written use of the term “Hunter’s Moon” identified in the Oxford English Dictionary is from 1710. According to the Farmer’s Almanac, with the leaves falling and the deer fattened, it is time to hunt. Since the harvesters have reaped the fields, hunters can easily see the animals that have come out to glean (and the foxes that have come out to prey upon them).

The Maine Farmer’s Almanac first published Native American names for the full moons in the 1930s. Over time these names have become widely known and used. According to this almanac, as the full moon in October the Algonquin tribes in what is now the northeastern United States called this the Travel Moon, the Dying Grass Moon, or the Sanguine or Blood Moon. Some sources indicate that the Dying Grass, Sanguine, and Blood Moon names are related to the turning of the leaves and dying back of plants with the start of fall. Others indicate that the names Sanguine and Blood Moon are associated with hunting to prepare for winter. the name “Travel Moon” may come from observing the migration of birds and other animals preparing for the winter. This name also may refer to the season when the more northern tribes would move down from the mountains for the winter. For example, both the Iroquois and Algonquin would hunt in the Adirondack Mountains during the summertime but leave in the fall to avoid the harsh mountain winters.

A full moon is when the moon appears as a full circle in the sky. Since the entire side of the Moon towards the Earth is illuminated by the Sun’s rays, we see it as a complete orbit.

The moon does not create its own light (visible). So only some parts of the moon can be seen. You can see a small amount of moonlight coming from distant stars and the reflection of light from Earth, which is ‘earthshine’. However, the Moon’s primary source of light is the Sun.

WHAT PLANETS ARE RETROGRADE NOVEMBER 2022? THE CHAOS CONTINUES

November’s astrology is far less chaotic than October’s, but there’s still some astrological events that are sure to have your head spinning. With Mars retrograde now in full swing, this month’s motto is all about moving slowly and deliberately, while seeking to maintain clarity when it comes to important details and information. Two outer planets will also be retrograde, but because they’re farther away from the sun, their affects will be far less noticeable. While a total of three planets will be retrograde during November 2022, the star of the show is definitely Mars retrograde, so get ready to do plenty of reviewing and revising when it comes to conflict, confrontation, and communication.

Though there will be three planets retrograding through the cosmos this month, none of them will *actually* be stationing retrograde during November. Since Mars just stationed retrograde back on Oct. 30, however, this retrograde is certain to bring forth a period of review that’s noticeable for every zodiac sign this month, in the curious, chatty sign of Gemini, just in time for Thanksgiving.

What Is A Retrograde?

A retrograde takes place when a planet begins moving slower than its normal pace. While every planet aside from the luminaries (aka the sun and moon) experiences a retrograde cycle, not all of them are incredibly noticeable. When inner planets like Mercury, Venus, and Mars station retrograde, it tends to be more apparent, since they’re closer to Earth and visible to the naked eye. Outer planets like Uranus, Neptune, and Pluto, on the other hand, are further away from us, which means that their retrogrades are typically less obvious, and the effects tend to be more noticeable over an extended period of time.

What Planets Will Be Retrograde November 2022?

A total of three planets will be retrograding through the sky during the month of November, but two of them are outer planets that stationed retrograde months ago. Uranus and Neptune spend several months retrograde every year, so this period is nothing out of the ordinary. Mars, however, the only personal planet retrograding this month, stations retrograde once every two years, making its effects far more apparent.

What To Expect From November 2022’s Retrograde Planets

While Mars, Uranus, and Neptune retrograde this month, only one of them — Mars — will be the planet causing the most noticeable shifts.

Neptune stationed retrograde in Pisces on June 28

Uranus stationed retrograde in Taurus on Aug. 24

Mars stationed retrograde on Oct. 30

Mars Retrograde (Oct. 30—Jan. 13, 2023)

Mars is the planet that rules action, assertion, and drive, and when it …

November 2022 Moon Phase Information

The Full Moon for this month will occur in the second week on Tuesday, November 8th. The New Moon will happen later in November on Wednesday, November 23rd.

About November’s Full Moon

With the changing of the seasons, November’s full moon marks the beginning of the end. In many different cultures, November’s full moon is intimately connected with death and loss, on both a literal and symbolic level. The Celts, for instance, called it the Reed Moon, comparing the mournful music made by wind instruments to the ghoulish sounds of spirits being drawn into the underworld. And not without good reason – the Full Mourning Moon marks a dangerous time of the year where people could easily slip into the underworld with a single misstep.

We may enjoy the luxury of winter coats and central heating now, but freezing to death during the long, dark winters used to be a very real threat to early inhabitants of Northern America. In order to survive, making warm winter clothing out of beaver fur was crucial for American colonists and Native American tribes. This is why November’s full moon is also known as the Beaver Moon. During this month, beavers are very active, working hard on dam construction, and so this was a good time to start harvesting their fur.

Missing the timing for this would mean death for these early Northern American communities, as the rivers would freeze over, making it impossible to set out traps. Many Native American tribes, including the Cree, Arapaho, and Abenaki tribes, called November’s full moon the “Moon When Rivers Start to Freeze”. This name drives home the importance of November’s full moon as a signal for these Native American tribes to begin trapping beavers before it was too late, as well as to complete their preparations for the darkest depths of winter.

For the Pagans, on the other hand, the final stage of their winter preparations involve the very important process of “mourning” – which is why they call the last moon before the winter solstice the Mourning Moon. After a full year of accumulating possessions, both physically and otherwise, the Mourning Moon is the perfect time to let go of old, unnecessary things, while giving yourself permission to mourn their passing. Practicing Pagans may perform a moonlit ritual where they write down the things they want to rid themselves of, and ask their Goddess for help in removing unwanted burdens.

Pagan traditions aside, anyone can benefit from taking the time to self-reflect and to let go. Take advantage of the Full Mourning Moon this November to look back on your year and take stock of your desires, your ambitions, your mental and behavioral habits, and the people you spend your energy on. Clean your living and work spaces, and sort out the physical objects that are not contributing to your well-being. Take the time to fully mourn and let go of anything – or anyone – that does not bring you joy, so that you can begin to move forward, unfettered, towards a lighter and happier new year.

Celtic Tree Ivy Month: September 30 – October 27

From LearnReligions.com

As the year comes to a close and Samhain approaches, the Ivy moon rolls in at the end of the harvest season. Ivy often lives on after its host plant has died — a reminder to us that life goes on, in the endless cycle of life, death and rebirth. The Celts called this month Gort, pronounced go-ert. This is a time to banish the negative from your life. Do workings related to improving yourself, and placing a barricade between you and the things that are toxic to you. Ivy can be used in magic performed for healing, protection, cooperation, and to bind lovers together.

From Ireland-Calling.com

Ivy has many superstitions and beliefs attached to it.

Because it had the ability to form dense thickets in woodland, grow where other plants could not and block out the light from even the mighty oak, ivy was believed to be very powerful by the Druids, more powerful than its enemy, the vine and quite sinister.

The ivy and the vine have been seen as enemies since ancient times. This seems odd since the same Greek and Roman gods are associated with each.

Bacchus, god of wine

In Greek mythology ivy was sacred to Osiris and also associated with Dionysus. In Roman mythology Ivy was connected to Bacchus, the god of wine as it grew over his home land.

Bacchus is often portrayed wearing an ivy crown, perhaps because this was once thought to prevent intoxication. The poisonous berries of the ivy, when ground into a powder were also once believed to be a hangover cure.

The link between Bacchus and ivy was taken over to England where old English Taverns would display ivy above their doors indicating the high quality of their drinks.

The proverb ‘Good wine needs no bush’, meaning good wine speaks for itself, comes from this practice.

Gort, G –

Ivy, a symbol of strength and determination to the Druids, is the twelfth letter of the ogham alphabet, gort, and the eleventh month in the Celtic tree calendar, representing September 30th to October 27th.

Protection from evil

In old Ireland ivy was thought to provide protection from evil when growing on or near to a dwelling.

However, if it should die or fall down then misfortune would fall upon those therein.

Ivy was often carried by young women for good luck and fertility. Used at weddings intertwined with holly, the ivy would symbolise fidelity and at Yule-tide, would bring peace to the household.

Ivy was also linked to inspiration and worn by poets in the form of a crown.

September’s Full Moon Wants You To Dream Big

With so much emphasis on logic, information, and details these days amid Virgo season, I’m sure you could benefit from a nice, relaxing vacation to get some relief from your busy schedule. While taking time off to plan a trip may not be at the top of your list of priorities at the moment, who’s to say you can’t use your imagination as a form of escapism? With the upcoming full moon in the dreamy, idealistic sign of Pisces preparing to illuminate the cosmos, the sense of urgency you’ve felt around keeping busy is bound to melt away, and your desire to envision what’s possible is coming into focus. As a mutable earth sign, Virgo season has been all about being of service, and while this has likely allowed you to cross plenty of tasks off your to-do list, it hasn’t left much space to tap into your creative side. Though being rooted in a realistic Virgo world promotes efficiency and productivity, the spiritual meaning of the September 2022 full Harvest Moon is all about focusing less on the nitty-gritty details, and embracing what’s possible — even if it’s currently not right in front of you.

As a mutable water sign, Pisces is a sign all about ideals, and not necessarily about actuality. It’s an energy that promotes envisioning what could be, regardless of what the current circumstances may look like. As the moon prepares to fill up with the sun’s productivity-oriented rays on Sept. 10, your dreams will be illuminated, prompting you to tap into your imagination, regardless of whether or not it makes sense. Since Jupiter — the planet of wisdom, growth, and expansion — rules this full moon and is currently retrograde in Aries, it may be somewhat challenging to move forward with any major plans (especially since Mercury’s stationing retrograde the day before), but this full moon is less about taking action and more about giving your mind the space to think outside the box. Consider what’s possible when you don’t limit yourself.

What Is A Harvest Moon?

A harvest moon is a full moon that takes place annually, right around the fall equinox. The rare thing about this full moon is that it takes place at the same time every evening a few nights in a row, and lends its light to farmers looking to harvest their crops before fall arrives, which is where it gets its name. This annual lunation is also commonly referred to as a Corn Moon or an Autumn Moon.

When Is The September 2022 Full Harvest Moon In Pisces?

The full Harvest Moon in Pisces will take place on Sept. 10, 2022 at 6:00 a.m. EST. Taking place in Pisces at 17 degrees, this lunation will shed light on the Pisces-ruled house in your birth chart, illuminating the dreams and ideals you’ve possibly been neglecting. Since Virgo season’s been in full swing, you’ve likely been more tapped into your logical mind, where it’s been easy to sight of the bigger picture. With this full moon bringing your attention back to your hopes and ideals, you’ll be reminded that in order to be the most productive, you can’t lose sight of your purpose. Remaining rooted in reality will allow your dreams to come to fruition, so it’s important to allow them to work together. Too much logic stifles creativity, and too much dreaming can keep you from taking action, so be sure not to lose sight of what you’re ultimately striving for.

THERE ARE 1 TOO MANY RETROGRADE PLANETS IN SEPTEMBER — INCLUDING MERCURY

A new month is upon us, which means that a new set of planetary transits is on the horizon, including retrogrades. Retrogrades are usually dreaded in the astro community, but it’s important to remember that they don’t always spell doom and gloom. When outer planets like Uranus and Neptune station retrograde, the effects aren’t as intense as when inner planets such as Venus and Mercury station retrograde. And even when the inner planets station, it’s only for a short period. So, while the number of retrograde planets in September 2022 may sound like too much to handle, it’s not as daunting as you may think (even though Mercury is one of them).

What Is A Retrograde?

A retrograde takes place when a planet essentially slows down, causing the planet to appear to move backward in the sky from our place on Earth. In reality, the planet isn’t actually moving backward, but it is moving much slower than normal, which is where the retrograde mishaps can come into play. A retrograde is what takes place when a planet reaches a certain distance away from the sun, called a trine, which coincides with the beginning and end of a retrograde cycle. Since Mercury typically retrogrades about three times every year, the effects are usually more noticeable and discussed, especially since it’s the planet that rules over speech, communication, and transportation. Since the outer planets don’t rule over mundane topics, their effects aren’t always as apparent, at least not initially.

How Many Planets Will Be Retrograde In September 2022?

This month, six planets in total will be retrograding through the cosmos — but five of them stationed retrograde prior to this month, and they’re all outer planets. The good thing is, you’ve experienced the retrogrades of each of these planets every single year, so it’s nothing you can’t handle.

What To Expect From September 2022’s Retrograde Planets

Though six planets retrograde is literally more than half of the sky, it’s nothing to worry about, because only one of these planets will actually be stationing retrograde in September.

The only planet that will actually station retrograde this month is Mercury, on Sept. 9. As a planet that stations retrograde pretty often, the themes of Mercury rx may already be engrained in your mind: texts sent to the wrong person, delayed or canceled travel plans, and Instagram going down, to name a few. Generally, Mercury retrogrades are typically a time to review, revise, and rethink the topics Mercury occupies over in your birth chart. Be sure to look not only at where Mercury will be stationing retrograde, but also at the astrological houses that Mercury rules over (Gemini and Virgo-ruled houses) in your birth chart. These are the areas prone to revisions, while the house Mercury actually stations in may be where you’re called to actualize these changes.

Mercury Retrograde (Sept. 9-Oct. 2)

Mercury is the planet all about details, information, and communication. When it stations retrograde, it can cause these themes to be more challenging, particularly based on the sign it’s stationing retrograde in. This time around, Mercury will initially be stationing retrograde in the cardinal air sign of Libra, prompting you to reconsider how you mediate, connect, and find balance in your life. As a sign ruled by Venus, Libra is all about treating people fairly and taking the time to understand every side to a story. Since Mercury will be retrograde, however, it may be challenging to receive accurate information during this time, so it’ll be important that you double check any messages that come your way now.

On Sept. 23, Mercury will retrograde back into the mutable earth sign of Virgo, grounding communication in a way that’s logical and efficient. Since this is the sign where Mercury is exalted, the second half of Mercury retrograde is bound to feel slightly more productive than the first half. With Mercury still retrograde, however, don’t expect productivity to be linear now. Instead, use this time to assess details and information, but don’t feel too much pressure to tackle everything listed on your to-do list until Mercury stations direct on Oct. 2.
