Deity of the Day for November 10th is Balder, Old Norse Baldr

Deity of the Day

Balder

Old Norse Baldr

The god of light, joy, purity, beauty, innocence, and reconciliation. Son of Odin and Frigg, he was loved by both gods and men and was considered to be the best of the gods. He had a good character, was friendly, wise and eloquent, although he had little power. His wife was Nanna daughter of Nep, and their son was Forseti, the god of justice. Balder’s hall was Breidablik (“broad splendor”).Most of the stories about Balder concern his death. He had been dreaming about his death, so Frigg extracted an oath from every creature, object and force in nature (snakes, metals, diseases, poisons, fire, etc.) that they would never harm Balder. All agreed that none of their kind would ever hurt or assist in hurting Balder. Thinking him invincible, the gods enjoyed themselves thereafter by using Balder as a target for knife-throwing and archery.

The malicious trickster, Loki, was jealous of Balder. He changed his appearance and asked Frigg if there was absolutely nothing that could harm the god of light. Frigg, suspecting nothing, answered that there was just one thing: a small tree in the west that was called mistletoe. She had thought it was too small to ask for an oath. Loki immediately left for the west and returned with the mistletoe. He tricked Balder’s blind twin brother Hod into throwing a mistletoe fig (dart) at Balder. Not knowing what he did, Hod threw the fig, guided by Loki’s aim. Pierced through the heart, Balder fell dead.

While the gods were lamenting Balder’s death, Odin sent his other son Hermod to Hel, the goddess of death, to plead for Balder’s return. Hel agreed to send Balder back to the land of the living on one condition: everything in the world, dead or alive, must weep for him. And everything wept, except for Loki, who had disguised himself as the witch Thokk. And so Balder had to remain in the underworld.

The others took the dead god, dressed him in crimson cloth, and placed him on a funeral pyre aboard his ship Ringhorn, which passed for the largest in the world. Beside him they lay the body of his wife Nanna, who had died of a broken heart. Balder’s horse and his treasures were also placed on the ship. The pyre was set on fire and the ship was sent to sea by the giantess Hyrrokin.

Loki did not escape punishment for his crime and Hod was put to death by Vali, son of Odin and Rind. Vali had been born for just that purpose. After the final conflict (Ragnarok), when a new world arises from its ashes, both Balder and Hod will be reborn.

In some versions it was his mother who had these disturbing dreams about his death.

A Blast from the Past – Our Favorite Familiar of the Day

Name: Milly
Age: Five years old
Gender: Female
Kind: Tabby Cat
Home: Big Bear City, California, USA
Hi everyone, I would love for you to meet my Milly girl. Milly is approximately five years old now and one of the sweetest cats there ever was ( I say one of the sweetest, because I have four and to me all of them are sweet).

Four years ago I decided that we had room for one more cat in the home and off we went to the local animal shelter in Big Bear City, California. I initially fell in love with an older cat, who I had named “Old Smokey.” Unfortunately, he was euthanized and I was unable to bring him home. The lady at the shelter said that she had a really sweet little female that had been there for one month and her time was running out … and her name was Milly. She was indeed friendly and I agreed to bring her into our family. She was spayed and a couple of days later she came home forever.

Milly is the funniest, sweetest little cat I have ever had the honour to know. I swear she thinks she is a dog. In a home that has three other cats and two dogs, Milly will be found hanging out with the dogs. She sleeps with Duncan, my 185-pound Great Dane/Mastiff cross, and doesn’t seem to mind being herded by Donnie the Border Collie.

She loves people and will be right beside the dogs to welcome someone into the home. She greets my son and I with morning kisses. She is adorable in so many ways. I wasn’t able to save Old Smokey, but I was able to share my home with Milly. She has brought us nothing but love and joy. She really is an amazing wee cat. She so deserves to be honored!

Astronomy Picture of the Day – AE Aurigae and the Flaming Star Nebula

Astronomy Picture of the Day

Discover the cosmos! Each day a different image or photograph of our fascinating universe is featured, along with a brief explanation written by a professional astronomer.

AE Aurigae and the Flaming Star Nebula
Image Credit & Copyright: Jesús Vargas (Sky-Astrophotography) & Maritxu Poyal (Maritxu)

Explanation: Is star AE Aurigae on fire? No. Even though AE Aurigae is named the flaming star, the surrounding nebula IC 405 is named the Flaming Star Nebula, and the region appears to have the color of fire, there is no fire. Fire, typically defined as the rapid molecular acquisition of oxygen, happens only when sufficient oxygen is present and is not important in such high-energy, low-oxygen environments such as stars. The material that appears as smoke is mostly interstellar hydrogen, but does contain smoke-like dark filaments of carbon-rich dust grains. The bright star AE Aurigae, visible toward the right near the nebula’s center, is so hot it is blue, emitting light so energetic it knocks electrons away from surrounding gas. When a proton recaptures an electron, light is emitted, as seen in the surrounding emission nebula. Pictured above, the Flaming Star nebula lies about 1,500 light years distant, spans about 5 light years, and is visible with a small telescope toward the constellation of the Charioteer (Auriga).

Moon in Scorpio

Nov 9, 2015 to Nov 12, 2015

I’ve heard that two rutting elk can lock horns for over a day. Of course, humans in a power struggle can easily exceed that, especially during Scorpio’s Moon. Power issues are raised. But what’s likely hidden is the truth about where that power lies. One opponent overthrows another, hoping to capture power. But is it really there? That’s the contemplation this Moontime. Here’s a clue: there’s a treasure house full of the good stuff, just like the fairy tales always said. And you don’t have to steal or envy the ones who seem to have it. All you need is to find your personal key. This Moon says, “Let your intuition lead.” If you’re stuck on something, visualize whatever you’re holding onto eighty years from now. Impermanence seems scary. But like an old snakeskin, after a loss comes something vibrant and new. Celebrate yourself as a passionate, evolving being.

Your Crowley Thoth Tarot Card for November 10th is The Hanged Man

Your Crowley Thoth Tarot Card for Today

The Hanged Man

The Hanged Man is the most enigmatic card of the Tarot. Even Tarot giants like Waite, Crowley and Levi had trouble deciphering The Hanged Man’s true meaning. Generally The Hanged Man is thought to represent the value of surrender and selfless acts. The Hanged Man embodies the notion that sometimes to lose is to win. Unlike the aggressive Chariot, The Hanged Man creates his fate through inaction and accepts his fortune passively, without resistance. He does not struggle to control the path his life takes, but rather allows events to sweep him where they will, even if he is called upon to sacrifice himself. He is so at ease with the Fate the Universe chose for him that even hanging upside down from a tree does not ruffle his inner peace.
