The Fool – Major Arcana

Description: A fool strides across the English countryside. He wears a fabulous multicolored costume. A hare gambols at his feet.

Interpretation: Here comes the Fool. Not a care in the world. Everything he says and does seems to turn out okay without his even trying. He’s the embodiment of effortless non-doing. All his possessions are wrapped up in just one knotted handkerchief. But is that mad look in his eye? Is he the village idiot, cuckoo-brained, a moon-calf? There’s a darker side to the Fool. He might be a trickster, an unraveller like Loki or Raven or Coyote or Efnysien, someone who brings chaos to the world, just because he can. He does suspiciously like Guy Fawkes. Or perhaps he’s the wise fool, able to speak when others cannot.

Traditionally, the Fool is regarded as the hero setting out on his magical quest. Of course, he starts from a state of pure innocence. Why else would he need to go adventuring? He needs to learn about himself and the world. That’s why his number is zero. Zero the hero. He starts with nothing.

Usually the Fool is accompanied by a small dog, but here Rex has given him a hare instead. According to mythology, the hare is wise and mad all at once, just like the Fool. As with any mammal that survives by running fast, hares have disproportionately large hearts—it’s what gives them oomph to escape the hounds. How appropriate. Like the hare, the Fool’s heart is huge and wide open. There might be a sheer drop in front of him, but he’d step right over and land without a scratch.

This reflects the attitudes of medieval hunters, who viewed hares as a challenge to catch.

Hare people are considered sensitive and artistic, and also linked with ambition, fitness, and virtue. However, the hare is not just associated with positive things. Hares are also thought of as greedy and selfish, even a bad example for people. Hare is seen as a jokester, linked with trickery and fraud. Even those with hare medicine are clever, often unreliable, and frequently thinking of themselves.

Although hare has some qualities that are less than redeeming, there are things he can teach us. Because they move in leaping and hopping motions, those with rabbit and hare totems can expect changes in their own lives in the same kind of movement. Hare can also aid people in recognizing the signs around them by attuning to lunar cycles and understanding the tides of movement in their own lives.

August is known as the Hazel Moon, because this is when Hazel nuts appear on the trees–the world Coll translates to “the life force inside you”, and what better symbol of life than the nut itself? Hazel was a handy tree to have around. Beginning September 30th through October 27th we celebrate the Celtic Tree month of Ivy. Although Ivy is not what most consider a tree, it still holds its place among the others in Celtic Tree Lore. Its uses and importance are just as strong as that of the Oak or Hazel. In the coming weeks we will examine a few of these important traits.

Ivy is a wild evergreen climbing vine that attaches itself to other trees as well as stone walls and other surfaces. It climbs such surfaces by fibers that grow our from every part of the stem. These fibers resembles roots and have small disks at the end by which it attaches itself to the roughness of the tree or wall it is climbing. If by chance the ivy finds soil or a deep crack the fibers will then become roots. These roots act as a means to obtain nourishment for the stem as it climbs. When this is done to another tree, the ivy can actually injure the tree it is attached to by taking of the trees life resources to aid itself.

Ivy only produces flowers when the branches get above their support. The flowering branches are bushy and come out from the climbing stem with flowers at the end of each shoot. Usually an ivy will flower during Autumn if there is enough sunlight. They appear as small clusters of greenish white or yellow . They can continue to bloom until late December. Hecate was the oldest form of the Greek Triple Goddess, as she presided over heaven, the underworld, and earth. Crossroads where three roads met were especially sacred to Hecate, earning her the title of Hekate of the Three Ways. It’s interesting to note that even after the worship of other goddesses waned, ancient people still worshiped Hecate as the Queen of the Underworld and the Guardian of the Three-Way Crossroad. It was also believed that if you left her an offering of food there, she would grant you her favors. As Hecate Trivia, her triple images were often displayed at these crossroads, where she was petitioned on the full moon for positive magick and on the dark of the moon for cursing and dark magick.

While this last bit of information sounds a little ominous, keep in mind that Hecate/Hekate was known by many titles and is a shapeshifter. Her appearance could and did change often. As a dark moon goddess, her faces are many. To some she may appear as a old crone, hunched over a smoking cauldron and draped in a midnight cape. To others she may appear as a dark beautiful, mysterious, and mature woman wearing a shimmering crown. To some she may be perceived as a maiden priestess. She was called the “most lovely one,” the Great Goddess of Nature, and the Queen of the World of Spirits. This dark goddess knows her way around the earth and the underworld. All the powers of nature, life, and death are at her command.

Here in the Northern Hemisphere the days are getting shorter as we look forward to Mabon, Samhain, Yule, and Imbloc. This is the time of year many of us switch from a cold beverage in the morning to a hot one. I have been 95% caffeine free for almost 15 years but on days that I had to go to work on little to no sleep I would have caffeinated coffee and wind up at the worse with a migraine or at least feel jittery. So, I had to figure out how my decaf coffee or tea or herbal tea could give me the boost that caffeinated beverages did. Standing in the kitchen one morning, while it was still dark out, waiting for my morning wake up sip I came up with a spell to put natural universal energy into my decaf coffee so I wouldn’t fall asleep walking to work. To my surprise, keep in mind I am still more asleep than awake, the spell work fantastically. This spell does work and is much better for the human body than caffeine and/or energy drinks.

Print off this spell if you want to and hang it in your kitchen somewhere close to where to fix your cup of coffee, tea, herbal tea in the morning.

Even if you drink your coffee or tea or herbal black you can use this spell to energize your beverage.

WHAT YOU WILL NEED:

Your Favorite Hot Beverage Cup/Mug

A Regular Teaspoon

Cup of Decaffeinated Coffee or Your Favorite Tea (this spell does work on herbal teas and beverages like regular Gatorade, or even plain water also)

Milk, Cream, Half and Half, Powdered Cream or whatever you use to make your beverage have a whitish color to it

Sugar, Artificial Sweetener, Honey, Or Whatever you use to sweeten your beverage

PREPERATION TO DO THE SPELL:

Brew your decaf coffee or steep your tea

Fill your Cup or Mug (Your beverage will be HOT. Be careful and watch as you pour so you do not over pour and get burned by your beverage)

Fix it how ever you like it – Do not stir it yet

SPELL:

Put the teaspoon into your cup/mug stir counterclockwise wise three times while saying:

I stir all out all tiredness from my mind and body

Make sure the liquid comes to a stop before stirring it clockwise three times while say:

I stir wake up energy into my (coffee, tea, herbal tea)

You can do this once and keep adding the spells more times, making sure the liquid come to a full stop before reversing your direction of stirring, until you know what is right for you. When you have stirred it both ways for as long as you want finish the spell as you would any other spell that you do.

Beltane – Spring is Here! Time to Get Your Gardens Ready

Welcome to springtime in the southern hemisphere. As the warmer weather comes a witches thoughts turns to sowing a garden. A garden can mean a different thing to each of us. For me it is getting my physical seeds ready for my veggie garden, to check to see if my herbs survived the winter or if I need to start new ones. Spiritually it means starting new seeds/paths for me to be able to grow to be closer to Mother Earth, the Universal energies, my students, and my teachers. To be able in the fall to reap full benefits of all that I have learned and put them into practice whether it is in my own personal life or helping my students with something. This year I need to plant new seeds and seedlings for all my flower gardens because early heavy rains in this part of the country washed away two inches of top soil in all my flower beds.

What does planting a garden mean to you? Do you plant flowers, vegetables, herbs, goals or a little of all of these or any combination? Remember whatever you plant will come to fruition with the right amount of love, watering (spiritually this can be communicating with each other in the pagan community or even be emailing me to say hi), sunshine (remember to thank the Sun God) and nurturing from within yourself (positive thoughts and affirmations) and from others in our community.
