Coll

C, sometimes read as K, is Coll, which is the Hazel tree. August is known as the Hazel Moon, because this is when Hazel nuts appear on the trees–the world Coll translates to “the life force inside you”, and what better symbol of life than the nut itself? Hazel is associated with wisdom and creativity and knowledge. Sometimes it is connected in Celtic lore with magical springs, sacred wells, and divination.

Hazel was a handy tree to have around. It was used by many English pilgrims to make staffs for use upon the road–not only was it a sturdy walking stick, it also provided a modicum of self-defense for weary travelers. Certainly, it could have been used as well for ritual. Hazel was used in weaving of baskets by medieval folk, and the leaves were fed to cattle because it was believed this would increase the cow’s supply of milk.

In the Irish myth cycles, there is a tale that nine hazel nuts dropped into a sacred pool. A salmon came along in the pool and gobbled up the nuts, which then imbued him with wisdom. A variation of the story appears in the legend of Finn Mac Cumhail, who ate the salmon and then took on the knowledge and wisdom of the fish. Note that Mac Cumhail is often translated as Mac Coll.

Our guardian angels are quite creative in the way they communicate with people. Never one to converse directly, they usually speak to us in the form of signs, symbols, and numbers.

Now, these numbers called angel numbers carry special meanings that we must decipher into normal language; only then can we receive and interpret our messages from the celestial beings properly.

Angels can find solutions to problems from different perspectives—perspectives that are beyond our imagination.

After all, unlike us, our angels are not limited by time nor space. They can look at a problem from different angles and guide us in the right direction.

So, if you see angel numbers, decipher them and adhere to the suggestions provided. There are many such numbers but today, let’s talk about angel number 14.

Tarot Cards

All the tarot cards to are from Tarot.com is Part of the Daily Insight Group ©2018

GENERAL

Three of Wands – Minor Arcana

This suit, most often called “Wands” and sometimes called “Rods” or “Staves,” represents initiative, ambition, drive and desire. This is the suit of enterprise and risk-taking.
A Three in this suit symbolizes an inner balance that allows you to feel more optimistic about new endeavors you are committed to, or want to commit to. In the illustrated Tarots, the human character is standing on his balcony, watching ships leave the harbor, loaded with his goods for far-off ports, dreaming of the fortune he will reap if all goes well. Summon the optimism within you.

This energy must be patient and trusting, because he or she will have to wait some time to find out how the ships have fared. Meanwhile, a lot of resources are tied up until they return with the bounty. Only those truly confident in their ideas and abilities would undertake such a risk. This card represents the energy a person needs to take on great adventures and accomplish noble (and remunerative) deeds.

A detail that sometimes appears in the more esoteric Tarots is a winged wand with two snakes twining around it, called the Caduceus, which is Mercury’s wand. This is an ancient symbol of the healer or shaman, one who can travel between the worlds to rescue souls from death or possession. Perhaps the feeling of empowerment this card represents points to the internal mechanisms of self-healing. Perhaps it refers to the courage it takes to be an entrepreneur or an inventor, which is in itself a magical process — bringing not only opportunity for success, but also an awakening to higher potentials.

Love

The Wheel of Fortune – Major Arcana

Today, the truth is told and clears up a situation that has hung on and on. Take direct action now to clear up something that should have been handled long ago. The Wheel of Fortune selected you because you need to know that some parts of the conditions were out of your control. Some events are not the result of something you did. You do have control over how you deal with matters now.

Health

King of Wands – Major Arcana

This suit, most often called “Wands” and sometimes called “Rods” or “Staves,” represents initiative, ambition, drive and desire. This is the suit of enterprise and risk-taking.

Traditionally representing the energy of a dynamic King, this card represents the classic conquering hero. He’s a charismatic leader, entrepreneurial and ambitious, always creating new adventures. He does this because he doesn’t like to stay home or to have to “mind the store” — he gets to feeling restless and bored with the predictable. If you need a crusader, or someone to take on a big challenge, he’s your man. He needs a big assignment, and would rather lead than follow.

It could be said that he has a bit of an ego, as evidenced in his enjoyment of flattery and praise. A bit of a performer, he overachieves in situations where it will be noticed, but in private he wants to be served and adored like the head lion of a pride. A benevolent dictator, he makes life wonderful for those he loves and just the opposite for those who displease him.

Finances

Eight of Wands – Minor Arcana

This suit, most often called “Wands” and sometimes called “Rods” or “Staves,” represents initiative, ambition, drive and desire. This is the suit of enterprise and risk-taking.

The Eight of this suit often shows a flight of spears or staffs moving through the air in formation, as if a hidden group of archers had let them fly all at once. This can refer to swiftly unfolding events, whether of unintentional or intentional design. There are also versions that emphasize the agricultural cycle, paralleling the yearly crop cycle with the swift growth of children into adults with children of their own.

In each case, the emphasis is on the necessity of change and the challenge of keeping up with it. With the turning of the seasons, we are constantly being forced to deal with change and there is no remedy but to live with that in mind. So, get busy — there is no time to waste!

Your Personal Daily Tarot Card

Judgement

Judgment embodies those forces which require us to be accountable for our actions. With Judgment truths are revealed, mysteries are unraveled and responsibility is assigned. Judgment unveils outcomes and marks the ends of things. While it is a time to properly place guilt, it is also a time for atonement and forgiveness. Ultimately the process of Judgment should lead to freedom from errors made in the past and a fresh start with a clean slate. To that end Judgment actually promises the start of a new journey on which we can apply what we have learned from our past.

Rune Meanings By Lucius Nothing

Rune meanings have been handed down through the mists of time since their ancient beginnings in approximately the 1st Century AD.

The Norse runes are part of an ancient Pro-Germanic tradition and the runic alphabet consists of 24 rune symbols – with the addition of one notably blank rune to allow space for cosmic chance – typically engraved on stones, seashells or pieces of wood.

Throughout their early history, the runes were in a constant state of development – with the subtraction and addition of runes undertaking by those who used the runes for divination, protection and other forms of magic.

The runes best known and most widely used today are the Elder Futhark Runes, a version of the runic alphabet completed and taken into use in the 5th Century AD. A set of Younger Futhark Runes also exists, but they are not in widespread use today, perhaps because more uncertainty exists around the proper interpretation of the Younger Futhark runic inscriptions. It is speculated that they are at least partly inspired by the Latin alphabet as it spread through Northern Europe, but not enough is know about this to confirm or deny the connection.

Since their beginnings, the runes have been steeped in history, mythology and meaning. They were considered to be a gift from the gods – specifically from the king of the gods, Odin, the allfather, and for this reason, they were venerated and cast with extreme caution and respect for their metaphysical qualities and divine origin.

Today, the runes are used similarly to Tarot cards, Oracle cards and other divination tools – as a means of tapping into your own inner reservoir of intuition, wisdom and ability to pick up on certain subtle clues in the present that may enable you to foretell the future with some accuracy. A crucial difference, of course, is that the runes are much older than any Tarot or oracle deck of cards.

Would you like to learn more about the runes, their meanings, and how to cast and interpret them? Then keep reading.

What Are Runes/Norse Runes/Elder Futhark Runes?

The runes, the Norse runes, and the Elder Futhark runes are all one and the same. Many variations of runes exist, but the Elder Futhark stones comprise the standard runes and rune meanings used to day.

The runic alphabet typically consists of 24 runes, each inscribed with its own magical symbol, and one blank rune called Odin’s rune. The blank rune symbolises that which cannot or must not be known about the future, and when it comes up in rune readings it is the equivalent of drawing a blank. It means that there are certain cosmic curtains behind which you should not look – or maybe it is not yet the right time for looking. When the blank rune comes up, it is important to respect its message, rather than trying to circumvent it by drawing more runes in a desperate bid to wring out an answer.

The runic alphabet divides into three parts – or suits, for those of you who are familiar with Tarot terminology – each consisting of eight runes. These divisions are called Aetts, the Ancient Norse word for families. And so we have Freyr’s Aett, Heimdall’s Aett and Tyr’s Aett. Each of the three Aetts addresses a different stage of life.

The first set of runes: Freyr’s Aett

The first eight runes of the runic alphabet belong to Freyr’s Aett. According to Norse mythology, Freyr was the god of rain, sun, fertility and peace. Thes runes belonging to his Aett deal with the physical plane and with discovering and learning how to master all of the tangible and necessary aspects of life.

The runes belonging to Freyr’s Aett are associated with the formative years of childhood and youth, the stage of life where we are very much still finding our feet in the world and deciding who we are.

The second set of runes: Heimdall’s Aett

The following eight runes belong to Heimdall’s Aett. In Norse mythology, Heimdall was the watchman of the gods.

The runes belonging to Heimdall’s Aett deal with a developing sense of maturity and personal growth, as well as with themes of maturation, harvest, obstacles and fate.

The third set of runes: Tyr’s Aett

The final set of runes belong to Tyr’s Aett. Try was the Norse sky god, and was also responsible for ward and justice.

These eight runes deal with spiritual development as well as legacy, inheritance, community and intuition.

The origin story of the Runes

As befits their ancient nature and metaphysical properties, the runes have an origin story steeped in myth and magic.

It is said that it was Odin, the king of the Ancient Nordic gods, who discovered the runes. Note that he did not invent them – the runes were a revelation and a gift, not an invention.

To obtain the gift of cosmic wisdom, Odin hung himself upside down from the branches of the world tree, Yggdrasil, for a nine days and nine nights. The runes were his reward.

Each rune symbol has a unique energy and meaning

Each Elder Futhark Rune is inscribed with a particular and unique magical symbol. Because the runes are so old and shrouded in mystery, each rune is ascribed a variety of potential meanings, rather than one that is clear and static.

Nevertheless, each rune holds a core meaning, a core cosmic truth, which the individual intuitive rune reader is able to interpret and expand on according to the context of the rune reading.

The runes’ names are all based on the ancient Anglo Saxon rune poem, a poem written ostensibly for the purpose of transmitting the rune lore in a convenient and easyp-to-grasp manner.

Rune divination

Runes have been used for divination since their beginnings, and divination is still their primary use today.

A rune casting can be done in a number of ways, but most commonly, it involves the person having the reading drawing runes from the bag in which the rune stones are kept. The number of runes used for the reading can vary from just one or just a few to a handful.

An easy-to-approach rune reading if you are new to the runes consists of just three rune positions: Past, present and future. But just as the case is with the Tarot cards, you can assign the runes any pre-ordained positions you like.

Rune magic

Throughout their very long history, the runes have been used for much more than divination. The runes are inextricably linked to seidr, a type of magic practiced in Ancient Norse society by both male and female practitioners. Not much is known about the original practice of weird, but it is believed and speculated that it was a form of magic which concerned itself with both the foretelling and shaping of the future.

According to Norse mythology it was Odin, the king of the gods, who discovered the runes and imparted the knowledge of them to humanity. As well as being the wise all-father a the ruler of the gods, Odin was also the god of sorcery (as well as poetry and war).

The runes are still use for magic today, by practitioners all over the world. Rune magic encompasses everything from rune readings to spells and hexes. Runic inscriptions can also be used in sigil magic, and in the creation of potent amulets for protection, prosperity, love and more.

It is interesting to note that the modern-day sigil magic is based on inscribed symbols that are then charged with magical energy and intention, with the purpose of affecting or shaping the future. Although no clear connection has been established between sigil magic and rune magic, it is very likely that the former draws its inspiration from the latter, or at the very least that the two share some interesting similarities and purposes.

Witchcraft Symbols, Terms and Definitions – Rabbit

Rabbits

What Do Rabbits Symbolize? Rabbit Symbolism Meaning from rabbitcaretips.com

Rabbits are one of the most popular pets. However, rabbits have been a part of lives, cultures, and religious practices for much longer than they have been considered pets. Historically speaking, rabbits hold a great deal of symbolic meaning. This can guide dreams, art, and even traditional dress.

Rabbits almost always symbolize prosperity, abundance, good luck, and fertility. Unlike many other animals, which have different meanings in different cultures, rabbit symbolism is consistent. In most European cultures, rabbits are springtime animals, symbolic of fruitfulness and renewal. The connection between rabbits and spring is also found in Japanese culture. In the U.S., rabbits are symbolic of cleverness, devotion to self-improvement, and good luck.

There are some cultures that see rabbits differently, however. While rabbits are the luckiest of the Zodiac animals in China, they are primarily seen as trickster animals by Native American cultures. Furthermore, while many Central American peoples see rabbits as symbols of fertility, Aztec mythology associates rabbits with drunkenness and promiscuity.

Fearn or Fern

Fearn represents the Alder, which is often found holding up the banks of a river or creek. Patti Wigington

F is for Fearn or Fern, which is associated with the Alder tree. The Alder is representative of the evolving spirit. Connected with the month of March and the spring equinox, Alder is the symbol of Bran in Celtic mythology. In The Mabinogion, Bran laid himself across a river as a bridge so that others might cross–likewise, the Alder bridges that magical space between earth and the heavens. It is also associated with oracular powers–Bran’s head was an oracle in legend.

Alders are often found in swampy, boggy areas, and conveniently, their wood doesn’t rot when it gets wet. In fact, if left to soak in water, it becomes hardened. This came in handy when early Britons were building strongholds in bogs. The city of Venice, Italy, was originally built upon piles of Alder wood. Once it’s dry, though, Alder tends to be less than durable.

Fearn Correspondences

Mundane Aspects: Keep in mind that you are an individual… but so is everyone else. When you look at someone, see the unusual which makes them themselves–and allow them to see that uniqueness in you. Be a mediator, a bridge, between people who may be having a disagreement.

Magical Aspects: Follow your instinct. Others will turn to you for advice and counsel during spiritual disagreements, and it’s your job to be the mediator and voice of reason.

Tarot Card of the Day

The Fool

Pamela Coleman-Smith’s artful rendition of The Fool in the Rider-Waite Tarot deck is often used to represent Tarot in general. Early classical versions of The Fool card, however, portray quite a different character — a person driven by base needs and urges, who has fallen into a state of poverty and deprivation.

In some earlier instances, The Fool is made out to be a carnival entertainer or a huckster. In others, he is portrayed as decrepit and vulnerable — as the cumulative result of his delusions and failures. Not until the 20th century do you see the popular Rider-Waite image of The Fool arise — that of an innocent soul before its fall into matter, untainted by contact with society and all its ills.

Modern decks usually borrow from the Rider-Waite imagery. Most Fool cards copy the bucolic mountainside scene, the butterfly, and the potential misplaced step that will send The Fool tumbling into the unknown. Don’t forget, though, that the earlier versions of this card represented already-fallen humanity, over-identified with the material plane of existence, and beginning a pilgrimage toward self-knowledge and, eventually, wisdom. The Fool reminds us to recognize the path of personal development within ourselves — and the stage upon that path where we find ourselves — in order to energize our movement toward deeper self-realization.

The Moon in all its phases represents the world of dreams, illusions, and the subconscious. Traditionally the symbol of the feminine, the card’s meaning encompasses the maternal, the Great Mother, womanhood, and cycles. The Moon is an ambivalent card, and its imagery signifies the difficulty to see things clearly: simultaneously inspiring and lacking courage, enchanting and bewildering, deceptive and receptive – all sides of the same coin. Signaling fluctuating moods and uncertainty we must pay attention to our dreams, confront our subconscious and deal with the issues that come to the surface in order to progress to a higher level of awareness. Being able to put our imagination and creative talents to good use is an added bonus. Negative qualities such as ambiguity, confusion, hidden fears, and deception can be causes for failure.

A Common Circle

We stand in the circle,
Together in common cause we celebrate,
Sabbath or Esbat it matters not.
We come together to show our love and devotion,
To the God and Goddess this day.
The Circle is cast and the Guardians are called,
We evoke the Lord and Lady to join us,
We dance and sing round and round,
asking for their blessing.
All individuals but for this short time we
come together as one,
Our energy empowers the circle,
Priest and Priestess our focus, they are
the key,
To casting forth the energy we gather.
Together as a community we are strong,
Within the circle our works are great.
The path matters not for when we stand together,
In the circle for we are one.

Today is Sunday

Traditionally, Sunday is the first day of the week. It is also known as the Lord’s Day from it original association with the Lord, that is, the Sun God, personified as Helios, Apollo, Ogmios, Mithras, and St. Elia. But in the Northern Tradition, the sun is seen as feminine, personified as the goddess known as Phoebe in East Anglia and Saule in eastern Europe. The sun rules the conscious element of the human being, the ego, the real self, and Sunday is the day on which this conscious power is at its most effective.

We Honor The Three Fates

The Fates, the Goddesses of Destiny

Ancient Greek Goddesses and Nymphs – The Three Fates aka the Moirae

The Three Fates – The Moirae
Discover fascinating information about the sisters who were referred to as the Three Fates. They were also known as the Moirae in Greek mythology or the Parcae in Roman legends and were the goddesses of Destiny. The Ancient Greeks believed that three Fates regulated the duration of human existence and the destinies of mortals. They controlled the metaphorical thread of life, the good and bad moments of every mortal from birth to death.

Definition of the Three Fates (Moirae)
Who were the Three Fates of Ancient Greek mythology? The meaning and definition of Three Fates are as follows: Definition of Three Fates: The Three Fates were the goddesses who were reputed to be the personification of destiny, the weavers of fate who determined when life began, when it ended and all that happened in between. The names of the Three Fates were Clotho, Lachesis and Atropos. Life is woven by Clotho, measured by Lachesis and the thread of life is cut by Atropos.

Genealogy of the Three Fates (Moirae)
According to most sources of Greek Mythology the three Fates were the daughters of Zeus, the king of the gods and and Themis, one of the Titanides. The primordial deities Chaos, the first of all divinities and Nyx, the dark goddess of Night are named in other sources, as are the Titan Cronus with Ananke, the goddess of inevitability and the personification of destiny, necessity and fate. The children of Nyx and Erebus also included Doom (Moros), Old Age (Geras), Divine Retribution (Nemesis), Death and Sleep (Thanatos and Hypnos), Strife (Eris, the goddess of Discord), Charon, the Keres and other personifications. There was a link between the Moirae and the Tyche the goddess of fortune and luck. The family members and genealogy of the Fates are detailed in the following family tree, providing an overview of the relationships between the Fates and some of the principle Greek gods and goddesses of the Underworld.

The Three Fates (Moirae)
The three goddesses accepted as the Fates were the personification of destiny, inevitability and fortune. Each of the three Fates, the weavers of fate, had specific tasks that they were divided between them. Clotho spun the thread, Lachesis measured it and Atropos cut the thread. Their name means “Parts.” “Shares” or “Alottted Portions.” The Three Fates (the Moirae) were believed to appear three nights after a child’s birth to determine the course of its life. As goddesses of birth, they had the power to prophesize the fate of the newly born, as goddesses of fate they clearly knew the future. Zeus was entitled the Leader of the Fates, and the three goddesses sat in attendance of his throne, presiding over the sacred laws of heaven. They were the distributors of good and bad fortune to mortals and to nations. The three Fates were also present at the birth of gods to declare their divine privileges and functions.

The Three Fates (Moirae) and the ‘Death Fates’ (the Keres)
Their was also a belief that a person’s ‘Ker’ or life force developed with his growth, either for good or evil. When the ultimate fate of a mortal was about to be decided, his ‘Ker’ was weighed in the balance by the Death Fates, the hateful goddesses of death called the Keres, and, according to its worth or worthlessness, life or death was awarded to the mortal in question. This concept originated in ancient Egyptian beliefs in which souls, including the ‘Ka’ were judged in the Hall of Two Truths where the heart was weighed against the feather of truth and their fate would be decided – either entrance into the perfect afterlife or to be sent to the Devourer of the Dead. It is therefore evident that according to the belief of the early Greeks, each individual had it in his power, to some extent, to shorten or prolong his own existence and not totally reliant on the judgement of the Fates.

The Three Fates (Moirae) – the Underworld and the Furies
As goddesses of death, the Fates appear together with the infernal goddesses called the Furies (Erinnyes) in Hades the Underworld. The Furies, also called the Erinyes, acted as agents of the Fates (Moirai), exacting the punishments decreed by the gods. The Fates spent some of their time in the Underworld, the province of Hades, the god of the Underworld. It was here that they kept the Archives of the Fates that contained the complete records of all mortals and events, on indestructible tablets of brass and iron. The wicked and evil dead were sent to be tormented by the Furies in Tartarus, a dark abyss, below the Underground – the equivalent of Hell. The Fates (Moirai) only allowed the good to pass to Elysium and the Elysian Fields.

The Three Fates – Clotho
Clotho was known as the “spinner” spun the thread of life from her distaff (a staff holding the bundle of unspun fibers) before being drawn onto her spindle (a shaft used to twist the yarn in spinning).
Clotho was depicted as a maiden
She was the youngest of the Moirae
Her symbol is a spindle
She had the power to make major decisions not only choosing who was born but also to decide if a mortal should be saved or put to death
Her Roman counterpart was called Nona

The Three Fates – Lachesis
Lachesis was known as the “allotter” measured the thread of life allotted to each person with her measuring rod. She was the ‘caster of lots’. (Casting lots meant throwing dice).
Lachesis was depicted as a matron
Her symbol is a scroll or globe
Her Roman counterpart was called Decuma
The Moirae were credited for creating invented seven of the letters of the Greek alphabet (alfa, vita, ita, taf, iota and ipsilon) because the lots, or dice, contained various symbols which were originally used for the purpose of prophecy and divination

The Three Fates – Atropos
Atropos was known as the “inevitable” and was the cutter of the thread of life and chose the manner of death for every mortal using “her abhorred shears”
Atropos was depicted as an old crone
She was the smallest of the Moirae
She was the most terrible and the most feared of the Fates
She was the oldest of the Moirae
Her symbol is a pair of shears
Her Roman counterpart was called Morta

The Attributes of the Three Fates (Moirae)
The ancient Greek gods and goddesses were associated with special symbols and attributes that were depicted in the pictures, mosaics, statues and images of the deities making them instantly recognisable. The attributes of the Three Fates included:

The Moirae were depicted holding various threads
Staffs or sceptres, the symbols of dominion
Clotho: A spindle
Lachesis: A scroll, the book of fate Scroll or globe representing a horoscope
The Shears (Atropos)
Dice: Dice have been used for gambling but they were also used for divination and prophecy. The throw of a dice was not just considered to be luck, the outcome was believed to be controlled by the Fates (Moirae) and casting dice was a method of prediction

About the Magickal Day of the Week, Sunday

In many traditions of Paganism, days of the week are very important aspects of effective spellcasting. For example, spells to do with abundance or prosperity could be done on Thursday, because it is associated with riches and desire. When casting a spell concerning business or communication, one might prefer to work on a Wednesday due to its associations.

While not all traditions follow this rule, when you’re doing any sort of magical working, always be sure to document the day of the week you’re performing the spell.

You might be surprised later on to see some connections!

Sunday Magical Correspondences

Sunday is associated with the colors yellow and gold, which shouldn’t be surprising – it’s the day of the sun, right? Because of this planetary association, this is a day that’s also connected to solar deities like Helios and Ra. Interestingly, in some Celtic traditions, Brighid’s day is Sunday as well.

When it comes to crystal use, Sunday is related to quartz crystals and diamonds, as well as the yellowish hues of carnelian and amber. For herbs and plants in magical workings, use marigolds, sunflowers or cinnamon.

What kind of magic is best performed on Sunday? Well, it’s a day that generally has a number of associations – agriculture, beauty, hope, victory, self-expression and creativity are all connected to this particular day. Plant or harvest something new (not just material crops, but metaphysical ones as well), create something from nothing, and prepare to win at everything.

Sunday–The Day of the Sun

Among all peoples in early times the sun was an object of wonder. It was to them a mystery, but although they could never understand it, they imagined many explanations of it. When we remember that in those long-ago days nothing was known of the rotation of the earth or of its movement round the sun, we can readily see how very real the movement of the sun must have seemed. But if it moved across the sky it must be a chariot, for it was in chariots that all men traveled quickly, while none but a god could ride across the sky.

The nature of the sun may have been difficult to understand, but the comforts and the benefits which it brought to men were plain to all. It was a kindly god who gave the earth warmth and light, who ripened the crops and the fruit and made them serviceable to man, who clothed the trees with leaves and scattered the fields with flowers. It is little wonder then that in all parts of the world men worshiped the sun, and the god whom they pictured in their imagination was all the more real to them because of the great worth he performed.

We have seen how the Greeks and Romans worshiped the sun as Apollo, the god who set out each day when the Gates of the East had been opened by the Goddess of the Dawn, and, driving his chariot across the sky, dipped down into the ocean, where a boat awaited him to bring him back. Apollo was the most beautiful of the gods, as befitted the giver of light and happiness, and was worshiped throughout those sunny lands of the South. On the Island of Rhodes, off the coast of Asia Minor, stood one of the Seven Wonders of the World, a statue of Apollo. It was known as the Colossus of Rhodes on account of its size, for it was 100 feet high, the fingers of the god being as long as a man. It was placed at the entrance to a harbor, and remained in position for nearly sixty years, and was then (224 B.C.) overthrown by an earthquake.

The principal temples of Apollo were in the Island of Delos, and at Delphi in Greece, and it was at this town of Delphi that the great Pythian Games were held every four years in honor of the god. The games were so called because Apollo was believed to have slain at Delphi a dragon called Python.

The sun’s daily journey, his contest with the darkness, and his final victory at the dawn of the new day are ideas which have led to endless stories, and we find these stories are very similar among different peoples. Ra, the great sun-god of Egypt, was pictured as traveling by day in a ship across the waters of the sky, and returning during the night through the kingdom of the dead. To the Egyptians Ra was a symbol of life, death, and a new birth or resurrection. Through the night Ra fought with the lord of the powers of darkness, a huge serpent, who awaited the sun in the west with a band of demons, and whom he overcame at the approach of dawn. Ra was always represented either as a hawk or as a man with a hawk’s head, with the sun on his head. The hawk was chosen as his symbol, because it was said to fly towards the sun.

In India the sun was worshiped as the god Agni, who rode in a shining chariot drawn by blood-red horses. He was golden-haired, and had a double face, seven tongues, and seven arms.

Among the gods of the early British who were driven into Ireland was the sun-god Nudd, or Ludd, as he was sometimes called. His name appears in Ludgate, and it is thought that his temple stood on what is now Ludgate Hill in London. At a town called Lydney, in Gloucestershire, the remains of a temple to Ludd have been found, with many inscriptions containing his name.

The Angles and Saxons imagined the sun to be carried in a chariot driven by a maiden named Sol, as we shall read later. They had no god whom we can describe exactly as a sun-god, but several of their gods were like the sun in many ways, particularly Frey, whose sword sent out rays of light like the sun, and who caused the crops to ripen, and Balder the Beautiful, the God of Light, who was the favorite son of Odin, father of the gods, and was, as his name shows, the most handsome of the gods, ever happy and light-hearted. His golden hair and his bright, clear eyes shone like the sun, and his radiant smile warmed the hearts of all who met him. He knew no thought of evil, but was “good and pure, and bright, was loved by all, as all love light”.

In spite of his lovable nature, however, Balder was destined to misfortune through his twin brother, Hodur, the God of Darkness, who was the exact opposite of his brother, for he was gloomy and silent, and suffered from blindness. Odin, through his great wisdom, knew that disaster was to come to Balder, and spared no effort to stave off the evil day, by making all things in creation swear that they would never harm the God of Light. This they were only too ready to do, and all made a solemn vow, with the one exception of a shoot of mistletoe, which was passed over as being too slight a thing ever to cause harm to anyone. Balder being now free from all possibility of hurt, the gods one day amused themselves by shooting and throwing at him, laughing gaily as the objects they threw fell short or turned aside. Now Loki, the God of Fire, was bitterly jealous of the God of Light, and, as he watched the sport, his evil nature prompted him to a cruel and cowardly deed. Having discovered that the mistletoe alone of all created things had made no promise, Loki hastened to the gate of Valhalla, where the mistletoe was growing and plucking it, by the help of his magical power quickly fashioned from it an arrow. He then returned and sought out Hodur, who, because of his blindness, was standing idly aside and taking no part in the sport. Loki pretended to take pity on him, and fitting the arrow to a bow which he placed in Hodur’s hands, he offered to aim the shaft for the blind god. Aided by Loki, Hodur let fly the fatal arrow, and, to the horror and amazement of the gods, Balder fell dead. The anger of the gods against Hodur knew no bounds, and they would have killed him had it not been for their own law, which forbade the shedding of blood in Asgard, the home of the gods. All Asgard was plunged in the deepest grief, and Hermod, the messenger of the gods, was sent to Hel, the Goddess of the Underworld, praying her to restore Balder to life. Hel consented to do so, on condition that all created things should weep for Balder. Messengers were at once sent out over all the world to bid all things weep for Balder. Living creatures, trees, and flowers, and even the stones shed tears for the god they had loved so well; but at last a giantess was found whose only reply to the messengers was “Let Hel keep what she has”. Thus the evil Loki, for he it was in the disguise of a giantess, showed once again his cruel hatred of Balder, and caused the whole earth to mourn the loss of the radiant God of Light.

The gods now prepared for the burial of Balder. As was the custom among the Northmen, fuel was piled on the deck of Balder’s ship Ringhorn, and the body was then laid on the funeral pyre. The sides of the ship were decorated with rich cloth and garlands of flowers, and swords, armour, drinking-vessels, and many other things which the gods valued, were placed beside the hero. A torch was then put to the fuel, and the ship was launched. The funeral pyre floated slowly towards the west, the rising flames lighting up sea and sky, until at last, like the sun itself, it sank slowly into the sea, and all light faded from the sky.

Balder’s Funeral Pyre

But when the gods and heroes heard, they brought
The wood to Balder’s ship, and built a pile,
Full the deck’s breadth, and lofty; then the corpse
Of Balder on the highest top they laid.
And they set jars of wine and oil to lean
Against the bodies, and stuck torches near,
Splinters of pine-wood, soak’d with turpentine,
And brought his arms and gold, and all his stuff,
And slew the dogs who at his table fed,
And his horse–Balder’s horse–whom most he loved,
And placed them on the pyre, and Odin threw
A last choice gift thereon, his golden ring.
The mast they fixt, and hoisted up the sails,
Then they put fire to the wood; and Thor
Set his stout shoulder hard against the stern
To push the ship through the thick sands;–sparks flew
From the deep trench she plough’d, so strong a god
Furrow’d it; and the water gurgled in.
And the ship floated on the waves, and rock’d.
But in the hills a strong east wind arose,
And came down moaning to the sea; first squalls
Ran black o’er the sea’s face, then steady rush’d
The breeze, and fill’d the sails, and blew the fire.
And wreathed in smoke the ship stood out to sea.
Soon with a roaring rose the mighty fire,
And the pile crackled; and between the logs
Sharp, quivering tongues of flame shot out, and leapt,
Curling and darting, higher, until they lick’d
The summit of the pile, the dead, the mast,
And ate the shrivelling sails; but still the ship
Drove on, ablaze above her hull with fire.
And the gods stood upon the beach, and gazed.
And while they gazed, the sun went lurid down
Into the smoke-wrapt sea, and night came on.
Then the wind fell with night, and there was calm;
But through the dark they watch’d the burning ship
Still carried o’er the distant waters on,
Farther and farther, like an eye of fire.
And long, in the far dark, blazed Balder’s pile;
But fainter, as the stars rose high, it flared,
The bodies were consumed, ash choked the pile.
And as, in a decaying winter-fire,
A charr’d log, falling, makes a shower of sparks–
So with a shower of sparks the pile fell in,
Reddening the sea around; and all was dark.
MATTHEW ARNOLD–Balder Dead.

The Witches Guide to Sunday

Ruler: Sun

Colors: Gold or yellow

Power Hours: Sunrise and sunset.

Key Words: Love, happiness, health, wealth

It is easy to spot the ruler of this day by its name. Sunday is the day of the sun. Community work, volunteer services, exercise, outdoor sports, buying, selling, speculating, meeting people, anything involving groups, running fairs and raffles, growing crops and taking care of all health matters fall under the influence of the Sun. With all this activity and the brightness of the sun, it’s easy to see why the child that is born on the Sabbath day is bonny and blithe, and good and gay.

Michael is the primary angel of Sunday but each hour of this day also has it’s secondary angel. These angels are Michael (first hour), Anael (second hour), Raphael (third hour), Gabril (fourth hour), Cassiel (fifth hour), Sachiel (sixth hour), Samael (seventh hour), Michael (eighth hour), Anael (ninth hour), Raphael (tenth hour), Gabriel (eleventh hour), and Cassiel twelfth hour). Notice some of the angels do double duty this day.

On Sundays, (unless you are invoking a specific angelic energy) the hour of sunrise will be the most powerful time to work, especially if you want to infuse energy into your work. Sunset is the second best time and is favored when you need to calm down a situation. Check the local newspaper, astrological calendar, or almanac to determine your local sunrise.

The Witches Correspondences

Magickal Intentions: Growth, Advancements, Enlightenment, Rational Thought, Exorcism, Healing, Prosperity, Hope, Exorcism, Money

Incense: Lemon, Frankincense

Planet: Sun

Sign: Leo

Angel: Michael

Colors: Gold, Yellow, Orange and White

Herbs/Plants: Marigold, Heliotrope, Sunflower, Buttercup, Cedar, Beech, Oak

Stones: Carnelian, Citrine, Tiger’s Eye, Amber, Clear Quartz and Red Agate

Oil: (Sun) Cedar, Frankincense, Neroli, Rosemary

The first day of the week is ruled by the Sun. It is an excellent time to work efforts involving business partnerships, work promotions, business ventures, and professional success.

Spells where friendships, mental or physical health, or bringing joy back into life are an issue work well on this day, too.

Sunday is Ruled by the Sun

Sunday corresponds to the sun, our closest star. This day is full of wonder and all sorts of magical potential for success, wealth, and fame. Sundays are for personal achievements of any kind such as working towards a promotion at your job, seeking fame and wealth, or being acknowledged for a job well done. All of these goals fall under the golden influence of the sun. Some suggestions for Sunday enchantments would include:

Sitting outside at sunrise and calling on the goddess Brigid for illumination and inspiration

Wearing gold jewelry or clothing that is gold or sunshine yellow to pull some color magic into your life

Arranging a few sunflowers in a vase and empowering these “flowers of the sun” for fame and ambition

Gathering up the common marigold flower and scattering it’s petals about to encourage prosperity

Baking up a batch of cinnamon rolls for the family and enchanting them for health and success

Snacking on a solar fruit, the orange, and enjoying the magical boost it brings to your life

The Energy of the Sun

The planetary energy of the Sun is stimulating and warm. It encourages growth and expansion as well as general good feelings all around. It may be used for magick related to the growth of anything; career, family, public influence, wealth, the garden, friendships, love, general abundance, employment opportunities, business. Because the Sun shines down on the whole world, and thus sees everything that happens, the Sun’s planetary energy is occasionally used to find objects as well as protecting us from deception or being “kept in the dark”. Looking at the Sun’s universality in a different way, this energy can be used to find a common thread (we’re all warmed by the same Sun) to encourage new friendships and partnerships and reconciliation where existing ones are threatened.

Many things that correspond to the planetary energy of the Sun also correspond to the elemental energy of Fire.
Healing

The sun is associated with the heart, circulatory system, the spinal cord and the thymus gland.

Solar Minerals

Metal Gold

Crystals/Stones

Yellow, red and particularly bright, shiny crystals and stones tend to correspond to the energy of the Sun. diamond, ruby, chrysolite, yellow topaz, citrine, red garnet, chrysoprase and amber- fossilized tree sap said to contain the energy of the Sun as metabolized by the tree. Corundum and yellow Tiger’s Eye show sparkling designs that remind one of the sun and of course, there is sunstone.

Crystals and metals that correspond to the planetary energy of the Sun can be worn, carried or placed on the body to encourage healing or to draw planetary energies ruled by the sun, such as abundance to the individual. They may also be used to create a gem elixir and ingested, assuming they do not contain toxic materials. Crystals can be placed in a location to draw the desired energies to your home, place of business or vehicle as desired, placed on the altar, held, or gazed upon to enhance energies being raised during spellwork or other focusing and manifesting exercises.

Solar Plants and herbs

Plants that resemble the sun in shape or color, that open during the day and close at night, that follow the sun’s movements during the day, and those plants that are traditionally associated with the winter solstice as well as those that provide winter nourishment when fresh plants are unavailable, such as grains and nuts. Physically, edible Sun plants tend to encourage a feeling of warm satisfaction and medicinal plants affect the heart. sunflower, calendula, marigold, daylily, orange, citron, saffron, pine, mistletoe, rosemary, buttercup, heliotrope, bay laurel, daisy, walnut, acorn, maize, wheat, hops, cloves, cinnamon

Herbs can be incorporated into magick by placing them on the altar in the form of fresh flowers or dried potpourri or incorporated into incense to enhance energies raised during spellwork and ritual of a solar nature. They can also be carried or worn in a pouch or placed in an area to attract these energies. An herbal floor wash will infuse an area with the desired energies, or this may be accomplished via fumigation. Edible plants can be consumed as part of a meal or as part of an elixir or other herbal preparation. Those herbs that are skin-safe can be added to massage oils or fragrance sprays and ritual baths. Whole herbs or essential oils may be used.

*Incense* cinnamon, clove, pine, citrus, Benzoin, Pine, Frankincense, Labdanum, Olibanum

Sun fragrances are generous and, to me, home sweet home types of smells, with the exception of a few, which have “special occasion” feels to me. The sorts of smells that fill a temple, or the house on a day when lots of company is coming. Over at http://www.alchemy-works.com/planets_sun.html this family of scents is described as “glorious” and it suits.

Days and Holidays

The Winter Solstice is the day most strongly associated with Solar Energy, though it peaks at the Summer Solstice, it declines thereafter.

Sunday is the Sun’s day.

Zodiac Leo is ruled by the sun.

Other Solar Correspondences

Animals Lion, Sparrowhawk, Griffin, hawk

While animal parts are used for magick in many traditions, they can be difficult or impossible to obtain and some animals are endangered, though you may find using feathers and fur of local animals to be feasible, using important bits of animals that aren’t already raised and slaughtered for food isn’t within the reach or moral compass of most modern witches. Using live animals subjects animals to discomfort and fear and is also not recommended. However, images of animals have a long history of use in magic and images of animals are quite easy to obtain as 2D pictures and 3D sculptures. If you are artistic, the very act of creating these images can help you more closely attune to their energy.

Colors

Orange, amber, gold, yellow, red

Many magic-users bring color into their working through their choice of colored candles, altar cloth and other items placed on the altar. If you wish to bring solar energy into your daily life, you may choose corresponding colors for your clothing or even chose paint, curtains and carpet colors to draw solar energy into your space.

Magickal Application for Sunday

The Latin term for Sunday, our first day of the week, is Dies Solis (“sun’s day”). In ancient Greek, it was called Hemera Heliou. In the Old English language, it was known as Sunnandaeg; in Middle English, Sonenday. All of these titles mean the same thing: the day of the sun.

What do you think of when you feel the sun shine down on you? What sorts of enchantments and energies do you think would be complementary to a day named after our closest star? Sunday brings those bright solar energies into your life and has the magickal correspondences of success, promotion, leadership, pride, light, generosity, warmth, fitness, and personal growth. Astrologically, the sun symbolizes the conscious self and rules the zodiac sign of Leo.

The charms and spells that would complement this magickal day of the sun are ones for personal achievements of any kind-such as if you are seeking fame and wealth, working for that much-deserved promotion at work, or being acknowledged for a job well done. Health issues, increasing personal power, or simply sticking to your diet and being proud of what you have accomplished all fall under the sun’s golden influence.

Sunday and the Perfect Corresponding Spell

Finally, it’s Sunday, the official day of rest. Not only do Christians acknowledge this day, but I’m sure many Pagans appreciate this day, as well. Everyone needs rest and lot of people need a good day to worship their creator (whomever or whatever that may be), however they deem fit to do so. With the Sun being the central theme of many ancient rituals, Sunday just seems to fit, in name and theory. Not only is it a good day to worship, it seems good to do more relaxed spells, such as, sleep, dream and rebirth.

Sunday Crystal Spell for Success

If you enjoy working with crystals, try this natural magick spell for ambition and success. Carefully look over the spell before performing it. Either set up this spell outside side or facing a sunny window. Opportune times of the day to work this sunny spell are sunrise and noon.

Gather one each of the following: a small piece of amber, a tiger’s-eye tumbled stone, and a quartz crystal point. With a safe, flat surface on which to set up the spell, place a yellow candle and a candle holder in the center, and arrange the stones in a ring around the candle. Have a lighter or matches handy to light the candle.

Speak the following spell three times:

Around a yellow candle I create a ring
Choose tiger’s-eye, amber, and quartz, it’s just the thing
I call the god Helios for drive and success
Today’s ambitions and career goals he will bless.

Close the spell by saying:

For the good of all, with harm to none
By the sun and stones, this spell is done.

Allow the candle to burn out on its own. Please remember to not leave your burning ing candle unattended. Pocket the sun-kissed stones and keep them with you in your pocket or purse, for a week.

Red Flower Meanings: What Do They Symbolize?

If you could envision the quintessential flower, it might be hard to decide on what kind it might be, but most likely it would be red. Indeed, no other flower says, “I love you,” quite like a red one. Yes, red flower symbolism includes true love. But it also includes so much more.

Here is a quick list of red flower meanings:

Romantic love

Passion

Excitement

Confidence

Wealth

Good luck

Security

Types of Red Flowers and Their Meanings

Red flower symbolism can have slight variations depending on the type of flower. Here are some examples:

Red roses mean romantic love and passion.

Poppy flowers symbolize honor and remembrance.

Hibiscus flowers symbolize hospitality and friendship.

Red tulips represent fresh starts and renewal.

Geraniums that are red symbolize good health and happiness.

Red orchids symbolize a happy marriage and prosperity.

Lilies that are red symbolize everlasting love.

Zinnias that are red represent romantic love and money.

Red cosmos symbolize soulmates.

Red Flower Symbolism Sends a Strong Message

Red flowers are suitable for many occasions. However, the strongest message they convey is romantic love. So, if given to the wrong person, they might send an unwelcome message! But when given to the right person – they speak volumes.

The color red is also associated with primal energy and your first chakra, or the root chakra. Your first chakra rules your security and stability. So, red flowers in the garden or as potted plants can provide positive energy for a home or business.

In summary, red flowers are classics. Green leaves provide the perfect contrast to scarlet, crimson, and fire-colored blooms. And few people can argue with their show-stopping beauty!

Yellow Flower Meaning & Symbolism + Types & When to Give Them from uniguide.com

Yellow flower symbolism and meanings include joy, hope, optimism, good luck, inspiration, imagination, friendship, good fortune, and other positive traits. In this post, we’ll explore the symbolism and meaning of yellow flowers as well as the best occasions to give them.

Types of Flowers that Are Yellow

Before we go into detail on yellow flower meanings, I thought you might be interested in a list of some of the types of flowers that come in yellow or mainly yellow hues. Here they are:

Black-eyed Susan

Clematis

Cosmos

Chrysanthemum

Daisy

Daffodil

Forsythia

Freesia

Goldenrod

Iris

Jasmine

Magnolia

Marigold

Orchid

Poppy

What do yellow flowers symbolize?

The color yellow has many positive associations. To begin, yellow is associated with the sun, which brings light, positive energy, and warmth to the world. While all plants get energy from the sun, yellow flowers in particular seem to embody its positive traits.

Here is a more detailed list of what yellow flowers symbolize:

Joy

Happiness

Optimism

Hope

Good luck

Good fortune

Wealth

Gut instincts

Ideas

Imagination

Inspiration

Friendship

Hope

Summer

Sunshine

One thing to note is that different yellow flowers have their own set of meanings. For more details on some of them, just click on the flower names with links listed above.

Yellow Flower Symbolism: Joy

Because yellow flowers symbolize joy, hope, and optimism, they make great gifts for people whose spirits you want to lift. In addition, they bring happy energy to gardens and indoor flowerpots.

Yellow Flower Meaning: Good Fortune

Yellow is also the color of gold. So, yellow flower symbolism also includes good fortune, wealth, and prosperity. For example, in some African cultures, yellow symbolizes affluence and status.1

Trusting Your Instincts

In addition to its association with gold and prosperity, yellow symbolizes the third chakra, or energy center, in the body. Called the solar plexus chakra, or Manipura in Sanskrit, the yellow chakra governs your gut instincts, courage, and willpower. In fact, in Japan, yellow symbolizes bravery.2

So, by association, yellow flowers symbolize courage, instincts, and willpower. Thus, they make great gifts for those who need a boost of confidence, are going through a challenging time, or are embarking on a new adventure. In the home or garden, yellow flowers are also positive symbols to remind you that you have more strength and power than you think you do!

In addition, yellow flowers and their essential oils can be used when you are working on opening or tuning up your solar plexus chakra.

Imagination and Bright Ideas

Yellow flower meaning also represents bright ideas – like a lightbulb moment – as well as inspiration, and imagination. In this way, they are associated with angel numbers 911 and 777 meaning, which both have similar associations. So, yellow flowers make great gifts for artists and for yourself to spark your creativity.

Finally, yellow flowers symbolize one of the greatest gifts in life, which is friendship. Any day of the week is the perfect time to show a friend you care and appreciate them being a part of your life.

Danger! Divination Works c 2012

(SIDE NOTE: This is in place of a Divination Journal today)

I don’t divine. Even though I have taught others divination techniques and written about their use and possible method of operation I haven’t tried to use any divination technique for over 15 years. Why? Well not because I don’t believe it works anymore! In fact quite the opposite – it is because I do believe that it is possible to divine the future that I do not do it.

This reluctance is part of my general reluctance to use Magic at all, and yes I do see divination as operating in generally the same arena that Magic operates. The same questions we need to ask before working Magic need to be asked before divination:

  • Do we fully understand the situation? Generally we are asked to look into the future for somebody because they wish to know the outcome of a current situation of to see if a particular desire or fear will happen. Do we understand why they are asking well enough to know how the knowledge will impact them?
  • Is divination the right tool? Even if we were to divine the future, is doing so the right or best response to the question? It might be much better to suggest relationship counselling to solve the current issues.
  • Do we understand the possible outcomes of performing the divination? Even with a great deal of thought our interference may well have unforeseen consequences.

All of these questions parallel the sort of questions we ask, or at least should be asking, when we plan a Magical working.

However with divination there are a couple of other issues that we need to consider. These questions have to do with the fact that what we are doing with divination is working not just with the present but with the future and past. Our future and past.

The Future

When we divine the future we do so in the hope that we can profit from the knowledge. This involves, in some part, changing the future. If the answer we get from the divination indicates that something unpleasant is going to happen then quite naturally we will work to try and either avoid the event or mitigate the impact. Even if we don’t actively try to change things the very fact that we do have this knowledge will impact on our behaviour thereby changing the future to a lesser or greater extent.

If the future is malleable, and we will see that potentially this is the case, rather than static and preordained then in gaining knowledge of the future we need to ask not only whether we understand the consequences of the actions we take to change this situation, just like in Magical working, but do we understand the consequences of even having that knowledge? But how can knowing something change what is and what is going to be? Surly if we don’t act on that knowledge then no damage can happen? Well having that knowledge will impact on our decisions whether or not we want it to. That knowledge will tune our subconscious and therefore our intuition and decision making.

Additionally prophecies tend to become self-fulfilling. If you believe that you are going to have good luck then you will tend to. This has been shown to be true even in scientifically tested situations. It is thought that believing that you are lucky makes you more likely to take chances and have a positive outlook.

Equally believing that things will be bad for you tends to produce a negative outlook on life and subsequently things then tend to go wrong.

Even believing that you have knowledge of the future can have a massive impact so imagine what impact having the knowledge for real – and if divination is real then that’s the case – will have.

But surely changing the future isn’t a problem? After all every time we make a decision the future changes, it moves in one direction or another based on our choices. So what is the problem with divination and acting on the information it gives? Well time has been compared in the past to a river, flowing from the past to the future with eddies, rapids and periods of smooth calm flow. The general direction of the flow is stable, maybe changing slowly in response to major events, just as a river changes its course due to a rock fall, but even then the general direction is usually unchanged, just a small diversion.

Unexpected Loops!

However with divination we are taking information from the future and using it to affect the present and hence the future itself. We are setting up what is often called a feedback loop. One example of such a feedback loop is when a microphone is places too close to a speaker. Most of you who have been to concerts will have heard the loud screech caused by that sort of feedback loop. What is happening is that the sound from the speakers is picked up by the mic, amplified and played out thorough the speaker to be picked up again by the mic and back through the loop.

These loops can, and as we have seen do, cause large changes in the output. One of the dangers that we face when using divination is that we will be setting up a temporal feedback loop causing a large change in the course of the future. Now I suspect that this change will tend to be localized, that is to say only impact on the person for who the divination has been done. Again we can see this effect when considering rivers.

When a change is made the local impact can be devastating; local conditions can change dramatically, for example where the river becomes blocked it will tend to find a new route possibly causing massive erosion locally and devastating the local landscape.

However the long term course of the river tends to be unaffected by these local events; this we would see perhaps as a dramatic change in an individual’s future but with only limited impact on the general flow of history. Now sometimes this dramatic change is what is desired but more often only a small more controlled change is wished for. Few people would accept their lives being turned totally upside down when all they wished for was an improvement in their financial situation.

This effect is well known in the practice of Magic, in that a spell will work in often unexpected ways, where a spell to draw money may well lead to, for example, the person loosing his job through injury but receiving a lump compensation sum. Not what was intended at all! The difference here is that Magic allows the spell to be focused to try and prevent such unintended outcomes whereas divination has no such focusing mechanism

There is another type of effect that taking the output of an event and feeding it back into the system can have. This time not only is the outcome potentially vast but it is also inherently unpredictable. When we use divination we are in danger of setting up a chaotic system.

A good example in the ‘natural’ world is the weather. Everybody knows how unpredictable the weather can be; one day may start very much like another but how the weather develops during the day may well be totally different.

From experience we all know that even the professional weather forecasters with all of their experience, knowledge and expensive machinery and computers can’t always get it right.

The reason for this is that the weather is an example of a different type of system, what is known as a chaotic system. One of the main properties of chaotic systems is that very small changes in the starting situation can lead to very large and totally unpredictable differences in the outcome. This is why the weather on one day develops totally differently to a previous day even though they seemed to start out the same; somewhere there was a small difference that caused the sun we had been expecting to turn into rain and thunder!

Chaos!

These chaotic systems tend to have a large number of factors contributing to their initial state as well as having the result of one situation being fed back into the system at the start of the next. With the weather for example we find that many hundreds of thousands of factors influence how the weather will develop including how the weather developed the previous day.

Divination is similar to a weather system in that it too has many, many factors contributing to the initial situation and that as time passes the outputs of each day feed into the next.

When the divination changes some of the initial conditions, as it by its very nature will, then we can expect to see large changes in the outcome and in a totally unpredictable way. As with the other impact of divination we do not have any way to focus the ‘Magic’ but in this case even if we did the very nature of the system would still mean that the outcome would be unpredictable.

Do Not Touch?

So does this mean that all forms of divination should be avoided? Well surprisingly no. Only those forms of divination that actively use information from the future to provide insights would cause the effects mentioned. If there was a divination method that worked by revealing the current state of the system, that is to say provided knowledge of the situation now rather than how it will develop into the future, then no change to the present will be made and the large unpredictable results should be avoided.

So what is needed is some way to determine what the method of choice is actually doing. Is it retrieving information from the future or simply revealing the current state of the system? Well I feel that there is such a way and it quite neatly splits divination methods into two groups. The way we differentiate the divination types is based on how the process is done.

The first group, the future knowledge techniques, all seem to have a common thread in that they all rely on random chance being present. It is, some would say, the existence of chance that allows the future to act in the present. For example the following techniques all seem to rely on the existence of some form of chance in their operation:

  • Tarot
  • I-Ching
  • Ogham Sticks
  • Tea Leaves

The tarot for example relies on the fall of the cards and the Ogham the selection of sticks. Both introduce the element of chance for the future, through the person doing the divination, to act on the present.

A good example of a type of divination that provides information about the present and allows the diviner to work with that is Palmistry. Here the information is build up throughout the life of the person whose palm is being read and can offer insights into the present as well as the person in question.

Interestingly the fact that the palm of the person who is having the reading is by definition personal it allows for a degree of focusing in very much the same way as sympathetic Magic operates.

The future in this case isn’t ‘read’ but inferred. A simple example can illustrate this. Knowledge of the present, say a large and frequent intake of alcohol, can and probably will lead to unfortunate circumstances in the future. This knowledge is inferred, projected from the now, and probabilistic; it gives a likelihood of what may happen, and so wouldn’t seem to be having the same direct impact on the past, present, future system that other direct divination techniques have.

The Bible, as we all know, has something of a downer on Magic in general and divination in particular:

“There shall not be found among you anyone that…useth divination, or an observer of times, or an enchanter or a Witch, or a charmer, or a consulter with familiar spirits, or a wizard, or a necromancer.” Deuteronomy 18:10-11 (KJV)

However the original Hebrew words mainly refer to contacting the spirits of dead people, or to performing evil sorcery which harms others; only two actually refer to divination and only two forms of divination are proscribed. Casting stones or sticks and predicting the future by their position and foretelling the future by looking for signs in nature. Is it possible that the writers of this passage understood the danger of certain forms of divination? Is that why only those two types are banned but others allowed?

In My View!

Now obviously I can’t say for sure that this is how the past, present, and future system operates but it does show all the hallmarks of such a system and many people do report the sort of effects – large changes in future events in a very unpredictable way from those seen in the divination or expectations.

Like many forms of Magic it is inherently difficult to show conclusively how, or indeed if, divination actually works and most of us operate by feel and experience. My feel is that most forms of divination have inherent risks and produce results that are far from our control. That is not to say that they don’t have their uses but that most of them shouldn’t be used in a cavalier way. Like all works of Magic divination should only be used when it is the most appropriate method and then only after you have considered the consequences and what you can do to try and ensure that there are no unexpected results.

Divination puts a great responsibility on us, perhaps more so than other forms of Magic. We need to rise to that responsibility.

“You’re a lot tougher than you think you are”

You have what it takes to deal with this turmoil, onw where events have taken a different turn from what you expect. Recall those times when you’ve faced adversity, when you had to dig deep inside yourself to discover the internal resources and the will to continue onward. As you recall those memories, beware of how the feel in your body. Anchor those feelings by calling on to them to shore your courage and help you maintain your dignity. By dealing with this situation head-on and paying attention to the nuances of the shifting energies, your inner wisdom will dictate when to move ahead and when to retreat, helping you sustain your power throughout.

By maintaining this stance, you’re not only protecting yourself physically and emotionally, but also spiritually. Call upon the Warrior inside, the archetypal aspect of yourself that’s charged with defending the inner kingdom and the archetypal King or Queen. This is one of those times when you definitely need to be assertive with others, saying no when necessary, asking for what you want, and sustaining your physical and emotional boundaries. Choosing a Rune Set: A Beginner’s Guide

Thinking about taking up the runes? Mastery of the runes can take many years, but it is not difficult for a beginner to learn the basics. (Much as young children can quickly learn their ABCs.) The first learning tool you’ll need is a rune set of your own, to begin familiarizing yourself with this ancient system of knowledge.

First, some background: Runes are archaic European letters used in magick and divination. The best-known runic alphabet is the Elder Futhark, which contains 24 symbols. There are other rune systems, such as the Younger Futhark, Northumbrian runes, and Witches’ runes. But most of the time, when people talk about reading runes, they are referring to the Elder Futhark, which fell out of use as an alphabet around the 8th century AD.

Each rune has a threefold meaning: A phonetic sound (as a letter of the alphabet), a mundane object or action that it stands for, and a mystical or abstract significance. Rune-casting—or reading the runes—is a way to activate intuition and gather information about the past, present and future. Runic symbols have powerfully condensed meaning. Sometimes, a single letter says something that paragraphs cannot.

Tarot Card of the Day

Seven of Wind

The Seven of this suit typically refers to mental preparedness, acquired through the use of imagination, including the rehearsing and visualizing of desired results. This card represents the positive mental habits of a natural winner. The image most often associated with this card is that of a canny warrior who has infiltrated into the enemy camp on the eve of a fateful battle, checking out their preparations and stealing their swords. Such a move is guaranteed to demoralize the enemy and undermine their performance in the upcoming confrontation.

Putting it in modern terms, one who draws this card needs to work smarter, not harder. Think long and deep, study all the angles and put yourself in the shoes of your competition. As a result, you will have such a thorough grasp of the whole situation that there will be no surprises — and no excuses for anything but success. Skillful preparation justifies the optimism of the natural winner.

Six of Pentacles reversed

Here’s this card again! We saw the Six of Pentacles last month as well, and it does seem that some of the lessons or struggles present in November are still with us currently. This is not unexpected. November marked the start of a chain of busy holidays; this year a number of stores where I live started merchandising for Christmas even before Halloween, and now are in full-swing with decorations and many additional products. In our spread, we have the Six of Pentacles positioned in reverse, which seems in direct alignment with this month’s theme card. I can’t help thinking about the fine line between holiday spirit and holiday pressure — pressure to find the perfect present for everyone on my list, pressure to get everything done on time… By some people’s standards, I’m already late if I’m still doing my holiday shopping now! And as noted above, if you’re operating on a budget, and many of us are, including everyone you care about and finding just the right thing for each of them can be tough.

When this card is reversed, it often indicates mishandling of resources, so I’m taking its appearance here as a warning. What sort of creative solutions might we find to honor those we love with clever gifts that don’t have to drain our resources? Last month’s appearance of this card asked us to think about different ways we could serve others. Generosity does not have to be financial, even though Pentacles are the suit of tangible concerns. There are many ways to show love. We can give others our time and energy to help improve the quality of their tangible existence. We can use our time and skills to make something for loved ones. People often say that it’s the thought that counts, but this is usually meant to excuse a lack of effort. If we put care into what we make, these gifts will be seen as both thoughtful AND enjoyable.

This card in reverse can also suggest greed, but in the current context, I would interpret that a little differently. Pressure to perform as expected can cause many of us to withdraw. I sense fear of a sort in this card, too. Perhaps we fear that others will not return our efforts of generosity. Giving to get or giving only because we received is a strangely deceptive cycle. Overall, this card is a reminder that how we treat others is important. A balance of the material and spiritual is essential for our well-being, and the act of giving supports that balance.

Considerations for the reversed Six of Pentacles:

1. What actions by others make you feel loved?
2. How do you typically show your love for others?
3. Think about those closest to you, people you would want to demonstrate your care for with a gift of some sort. What do you think makes each of them feel loved? How could you tailor your gift to match this?

How to Do a Serenity Tarot Reading

A Tarot spread to help you heal and find inner peace

The famous singer Marvin Gaye once said, “If you cannot find peace within yourself, you’ll never find it anywhere else.” How true this is! Unfortunately, sometimes it seems as if life gets in the way, and achieving tranquility is harder than it should be. Are you struggling with overcoming grief, feeling bombarded by the negativity in the news, or managing some kind of internal conflict? This 6-card do-it-yourself Serenity Tarot spread shows you exactly what you need to do to clear out the emotional clutter, and put yourself back onto a more positive path. Keep reading to see how YOU can use this spread to heal.

Position 1: Foundation card

Heart of the issue

The first card of this reading takes a look at what’s really at the center of your suffering. While it’s usually pretty easy to identify how we’re feeling, sometimes we don’t know why we’re feeling the way we do. When pulling this card, make sure to sit and focus on the emotions you’re experiencing at that moment. Allow yourself to fully embrace what it is that’s going on in your head and heart. Think of this card as putting the spotlight on the darkness you’re experiencing right now.

Position 2: Barrier card

What is blocking you from healing?

The path to healing is not a straight line. The Barrier Card will help you see what it is that has been preventing you from finding the inner peace you need. Sometimes these stumbling blocks come from outside influences, and sometimes the struggle is coming from within. The message you receive from this card will allow you to confront — and deal with — what has been stopping you from finding inner peace.

Position 3: Healing card

Advice on how to move forward

When we’re swimming in an ocean of emotion, it’s not always easy to see what it is we need to do to feel good again. The third card in this spread takes a look at your situation and gives you the practical insight and advice needed to help soothe any anxiety or uncertainty you’re feeling. Think of the Healing Card as your own personal counselor, helping guide you towards a better future.

Position 4: External card

What you can do to help others

In dark times it is not only we who are hurting — others around us may be as well. We all have an internal light that acts as a beacon of hope no matter how dark these times may seem, and your External Card helps you see what this special gift is. Is your higher power that you act as a pillar of strength? Or, is it your unwavering compassion for those suffering around you?

Position 5: Internal card

What you can do to help yourself

The Tarot is known for its ability to empower us, and there is nothing more empowering than learning that everything you need to be happy is already inside of you. Think of your fifth card as your “self” card, one that shines a spotlight on your greatest source of inner strength. The insight revealed in this position will show you that not only is healing is possible, but that you already have what it takes to get there.

Position 6: Revelation card

Lessons you can learn from this situation

While it may not seem like it at the time, there is always a silver lining in times of adversity. Not only can our suffering teach us important lessons about life, but it can also teach us important lessons about ourselves. Think of your Revelation Card as a glimpse into your future — a future where you’re stronger and wiser for having gone through this situation.

No matter what it is you’re dealing with right now, this simple 6-card Tarot reading can help guide you towards a happier, brighter tomorrow. Are you ready to get started? Take a deep breath, shuffle the cards, and let the power of the Tarot guide you now.

Your Crowley Thoth Tarot Card for Today

Lust

While similar to classic Tarot’s Strength card, Lust goes a step further by suggesting we should enjoy the pleasures of exercising our strengths, sating our passions, and embracing that which allows one to express the majesty of their unique self. The lust this card indicates is not purely sexual, but at its most basic this lust is a primal desire to experience life to the fullest degree possible while taming our more beastly side. Lust implies that we not fight with our base instincts, but rather that we accept and manage and nourish them as an essential aspect of maintaining a balanced, complete self.

Where the Green Man appears the mystery and untamed energy of nature abounds. The Green Man indicates the presence of choices and powers that have not been muted by civilization. The Green Man represents the antithesis of technology and industrialization. He offers primal energies veiled in mystery and derived from the spirit of nature in its purest form.

As a daily card, The Green Man indicates you are in a place where you will be well served by exploring your place in the natural world. The Wave

Meaning: This rune symbolizes your friends and family and their influence upon you. Its meaning is usually derived from the other stones closest to it. This rune is also associated with travel. Your Personal Daily Tarot Card c. 2015

The Hanged Man

The Hanged Man is the most enigmatic card of the Tarot. Even Tarot giants like Waite, Crowley and Levi had trouble deciphering The Hanged Man’s true meaning. Generally The Hanged Man is thought to represent the value of surrender and selfless acts. The Hanged Man embodies the notion that sometimes to lose is to win. Unlike the aggressive Chariot, The Hanged Man creates his fate through inaction and accepts his fortune passively, without resistance. He does not struggle to control the path his life takes, but rather allows events to sweep him where they will, even if he is called upon to sacrifice himself. He is so at ease with the Fate the Universe chose for him that even hanging upside down from a tree does not ruffle his inner peace.
