Ragnar Lodbrok
Remembered on this day, Ragnar Lodbrok was a leader of the Vikings who was captured by the Christian Northumbrians, tortured, and thrown into a pit of poisonous snakes. It was Ragnar’s death song, of his faith in the afterlife, that inspired a bard present at the execution to convey his message to others. ers. Passed from generation to generation, the song provides reassurance and hope for what lies in the great beyond:
The Disir call me back home, those whom Odin
has sent for me from the Hall of the Lord of Hosts.
Gladly will I sup ale in the high seat with the Gods.
The days of my life are finished. I laugh as I die!
