Ancient Celebrations for Today – MABON

For more about Mabon and the Wheel of The Year

Known as the pagan Thanksgiving, Mabon marks the Autumn Equinox, when day and night are equal, making it a time of balance, equality and harmony.  In ancient times Mabon was a celebration of the second harvest (Lughnasadh was the first) when farmers gathered hearty foods like gourds, pumpkins, grapes and apples.

Modern Mabon celebrations are a time to give thanks for the abundance of Mother Earth – both literally and spiritually.  It’s also a good time to reflect on the Wheel of the Year, recognizing your successes and letting go of the things that did not serve you during the past twelve months.

History Of Mabon

Modern Pagans began celebrating Mabon as the last of the eight Sabbats in the 1970s, but its roots as a harvest festival go back to ancient times.

Named after the ancient Welsh hero named Mabon ap Modron, which means Son of Mother, Mabon is the second of three harvest festivals that take place in the Wheel of the Year (Lughnasadh is the first and Samhain is the third).  Similar to Apollo, the figure of Mabon was depicted as a handsome youth with a lyre. As a baby Mabon was said to have been held hostage as a baby in the underworld, similar to the story of Persephone and Demeter.

Indeed, the Greek goddess Demeter is much more closely associated with the Autumn harvest, as…

Moon Alert

There are no restrictions to shopping or important decisions today until 10:30 PM PDT. The Moon is in Cancer.

Aries (March 21-April 19)

It’s curious, but even though you have had lots of energy to work hard and get things done; today, you feel like you’re losing steam. Your energy might feel lower, especially regarding your work and your health in general. (That’s why something might feel like it’s too much bother.) This is temporary.

Taurus (April 20-May 20)

Although you have been vigourous with social activities recently, today your energy is flagging. Your enthusiasm for sports, social activities, the arts and dealing with children is a bit less and perhaps even confused? Relax. This is temporary.

Gemini (May 21-June 20)

Increased chaos and activity on the home front have kept you hopping! Today however, you feel unsure about something at home or within the family? You might even hide your feelings or your actions to avoid an uncomfortable confrontation.

Cancer (June 21-July 22)

Lately, you have been proactive and eager to communicate to others and state your case or your beliefs. Today however, you feel less sure of things. You might not know what to do. You might feel you have to hide something? Fortunately, this is a fleeting influence.

Leo (July 23-Aug. 22)

This is a poor day for important financial decisions because some kind of confusion, possibly deceit, might be in the air. Perhaps you don’t have the complete picture? It’s possible that someone is purposely leading you astray? Tread carefully.

Virgo (Aug. 23-Sept. 22)

Today Mars is in your sign at odds with your ruler Neptune, which is a fuzzy combination. Even though you have had high energy lately, today – not so much. You might feel indecisive and not sure about what to do or when to act. That’s okay. This is temporary.

Libra (Sept. 23-Oct. 22)

Today secrets and something going on behind the scenes might concern you. You might wonder if you are being purposely left out of the information loop. Are you being toyed with? Do you have all the facts? This is the classic day for someone to be deceptive with others. Keep your eyes open.

Scorpio (Oct. 23-Nov. 21)

You have been enthusiastic and positive in your relations with friends and groups lately. In fact, your leadership qualities are showing! Today however, a very different vibe is briefly present, which makes you feel unsure about directing others. Listen to your gut instincts.

Sagittarius (Nov. 22-Dec. 21)

You are enjoying great press lately because the Sun is shining down on you from the top of your chart; plus, Mars (also at the top) arouses your ambition! Today however, you feel vaguely unsure about something. You might decide not to press your point or make a big deal about anything. This could be wise.

Capricorn (Dec. 22-Jan. 19)

Travel, further education and training, plus opportunities in publishing, the media, medicine and the law are all things that interest you lately. However, today these are the very areas where you might feel confused or hesitant. Actually, you might be deceived by something. Tread carefully.

Aquarius (Jan. 20-Feb. 18)

Be careful if you are making decisions about shared property, insurance issues, inheritances, taxes and debt today because you might not have the correct facts. Information could be wrong. An element of deceit is possible. Best to delay these decisions for another day.

Pisces (Feb. 19-March 20)

Relations with partners and close friends might be a bit confusing today. This could lead to a misunderstanding. If this is a case, be aware that someone might not have the right facts. Admittedly, someone might not be hundred percent honest. Oops.

Moon Goddess’ Current Phase

From Moongiant.com –  You can use this link to go forward or backward in time for Moon phase information. If you are curious you can even find out what phase the Moon was in when you or anyone else, you know was on the date the person was born.

The Moon’s current phase for today and tonight is a Waning Crescent phase. In this phase the Moon’s illumination is growing smaller each day until the New Moon. During this part of the Moon cycle, the Moon is getting closer to the Sun as viewed from Earth and the night side of the Moon is facing the Earth with only a small edge of the Moon being illuminated. This phase is best viewed an hour or 2 before the sunrise and can be quite beautiful if you’re willing to get up early. It can also be a great time to see the features of the Moon’s surface. Along the edge where the illuminated portion meets the dark side, the craters and mountains cast long shadows making them easier to observe with a telescope or binoculars.

Visit the September 2021 Moon Phases Calendar to see all the daily moon phase for this month.

Today’s Waning Crescent Phase

The Waning Crescent on September 2 has an illumination of 21%. This is the percentage of the Moon illuminated by the Sun. The illumination is constantly changing and can vary up to 10% a day. On September 2 the Moon is 25.04 days old. This refers to how many days it has been since the last New Moon. It takes 29.53 days for the Moon to orbit the Earth and go through the lunar cycle of all 8 Moon phases.

The 8 Lunar Phases

There are 8 lunar phases the Moon goes through in its 29.53 days lunar cycle. The 4 major Moon phases are Full Moon, New Moon, First Quarter and Last Quarter. Between these major phases, there are 4 minor ones: the Waxing Crescent, Waxing Gibbous, Waning Gibbous and Waning Crescent. For more info on the Moon Cycle and on each phase check out Wikipedia Lunar Phase page.

THE MONTH OF SEPTEMBER 2021: HOLIDAYS, FUN FACTS, FOLKLORE EVERYTHING YOU NEED TO KNOW ABOUT SEPTEMBER

From The Old Farmers Almanac

What happens in the month of September? It’s a little for everyone: the last days of summer and the first days of fall. See September holidays, advice, recipes, fun facts, and trivia below.

September, in Old England, was called Haervest-monath (Harvest Month). This is the time to gather up the rest of the harvest and prepare for the winter months.

There are flowers enough in the summertime,
More flowers than I can remember—
But none with the purple, gold, and red
That dye the flowers of September!

—Mary Howitt (1799-1888)

THE MONTH OF SEPTEMBER

September’s name comes from the Latin word septem, meaning “seven.” This month had originally been the seventh month of the early Roman calendar.

SEPTEMBER CALENDAR

  • September 6—the first Monday in September—is Labor Day. Canadians also observe Labour Day.
  • September 6 is also Rosh Hashanah, a Jewish holiday that marks the beginning of the new year.
  • September 11 is Patriot Day, held in honor and remembrance of those who died in the September 11 attacks of 2001. This year marks the 20th anniversary of September 11.
  • September 12 is Grandparents Day. Honor your grandparents today—and every day!
  • September 15 is Yom Kippur, the holiest holiday in the Jewish calendar.
  • September 17 is Constitution Day. This day celebrates the adoption of the U.S. Constitution, which occurred on September 17, 1787 (just five years prior to the founding of The Old Farmer’s Almanac, believe it or not!).
  • September 21 is recognized as the annual International Day of Peace. Observances range from a moment of silence at noon to events such as peace walks, concerts, and volunteering in the community.
  • September 22 marks the start of fall! This year’s Autumnal Equinox occurs at 3:20 P.M. EDT on Wednesday, September 22. At this time, there are approximately equal hours of daylight and darkness.
  • September 29 is Michaelmas. Michaelmas is an ancient Celtic “Quarter Day” which marked the end of the harvesting season and was steeped in folklore.

“Just for Fun” Days

  • September is National Happy Cat Month
  • September 8: National Hug Your Hound Day

HOLIDAY TRADITIONS AROUND THE WORLD

Mid-Autumn Festival: September 20–21, 2021

Also known as the Moon Festival, this holiday has been celebrated for at least 3,000 years and is said to be the second largest festival in China after the Chinese New Year. Observed on the 15th day of the eighth month of the traditional Chinese lunar calendar, it can occur in either September or early October in the Gregorian calendar.

This autumn festival occurs during the full Moon nearest the fall equinox, which is traditionally said to be the brightest and roundest. Local festivities might involve brightly colored lanterns, dances, games, and other entertainments. Families and friends celebrate into the evening to give thanks for the harvest and for being together, offering each other wishes for happiness and long life and remembering loved ones who live far away.

Celebrants may make offerings to the Moon goddess Chang’e or share traditional mooncakes by moonlight. These round pastries, which symbolize the full Moon and reunion, are often filled with red bean or lotus seed paste surrounding a salted egg yolk in the center.

The morning glory symbolizes affection. It can also mean coquetry, affectation, or bonds in the language of flowers. Find out more about September’s birth flowers and the language of flowers.

SEPTEMBER BIRTHSTONE

The September birthstone is the sapphire, which was once thought to guard against evil and poisoning.

  • Sapphire is a form of corundum that is typically blue, a color caused by tiny bits of iron and titanium; the vivid, medium blues are more valuable than lighter or darker forms. Due to various trace elements, sapphires also appear in other colors. Those with red colors are called rubies.
  • Sapphires were thought to encourage divine wisdom and protection. They symbolized purity, truth, trust, and loyalty. Some believed that if they were placed in a jar with a snake, the snake would die.
  • The sapphire, along with the related ruby, are the second-hardest natural gemstones, with only the diamond being harder.

THIS MONTH IN HISTORY

September 12: Choices

On this day in 1962, President John F. Kennedy went to Rice University in Houston, Texas, to make a speech justifying his proposed $5.4 billion space program. He had called on Congress in the previous year to fund a massive project to put a man on the Moon and bring him home safely before the end of the decade. Toward that end, he asked his vice president, Lyndon Johnson, to make it happen. Johnson, a Texan, was happy to oblige.

The plan was to establish a Manned Spacecraft Center in Houston, upon land that had been made available by Rice University (which had received it from Humble Oil and Refining Company). If that happened, federal money would flow to that city and to Rice, a university distinguished for its scholarship, if not for its football. In football, the University of Texas was king, although Rice gamely played Texas every year.

Kennedy challenged 35,000 listeners, sweltering in the Rice football stadium, to think big: “But why, some say, the Moon? Why choose this as our goal? And they may well ask, Why climb the highest mountain? Why, 35 years ago, fly the Atlantic?” he asked. Then he added another impossible goal, one he had jotted in the margin only minutes earlier: “Why does Rice play Texas?”

The line drew a huge laugh and added a touch of humor and humility to the soaring rhetoric. His speech continued, soon issuing the now famous lines, “We choose to go to the Moon in this decade and do the other things, not because they are easy, but because they are hard … .”

Kennedy eventually got his moonshot, although he did not live to see Neil Armstrong’s 1969 moonwalk. And, three years after the speech, in 1965, Rice beat Texas. It would be 28 years before that happened again.

Weekly Horoscopes November 3rd to November 9th

Weekly Horoscope by Georgia Nicols

All Signs

This week many people will encounter power struggles with others. This is because fiery Mars is at odds with big daddy Pluto. The best way to use this energy is to change the world around you to better suit your needs and desires. However, what is more likely, is that people will have fierce power struggles and disagreements. This is because Mars brings much energy into the picture, while Pluto is entrenched in a passionate stance. Note: This nasty little standoff can often end up in defeat! (Ouch.) In fact, defeat is almost assured if you are ruthless or underhanded. This week nice guys do not finish last. They finish first! (And they dress quickly, too.)

Aries (March 21-April 19)

This is an intense week. The downside is that maddening, goofy errors will dog your steps regarding banking details or anything to do with inheritances and shared property. The upside is that you can finish matters that have been dragging on for a while. Start looking for ways to travel for pleasure because for sure you will have this opportunity in the next few weeks. Meanwhile, be patient with partners and close friends, especially at the beginning of the week because you might encounter a standoff like the Gunfight at the O.K. Corral. Lighten up in your dealings with others. Be tolerant and patient. Cope as best you can. If your bread is stale – make toast.

Taurus (April 20-May 20)

Old friends, ex-spouses and ex-partners are back on the scene. This might be the reason that you are at odds with someone at work. At the beginning of the week, you will encounter difficulties with someone, probably on the job; however, these obstacles might also relate to a pet or something to do with your health. Either way it’s a power struggle – and you don’t need this. Fortunately, you’re entering a lovely window of a few weeks that blesses you financially. Expect gifts, goodies and favours from others to come your way! In addition, during the next few weeks, you have an advantage if you need to borrow money or get a loan or mortgage from a bank. Ka-ching!

Gemini (May 21-June 20)

This is a tricky week ahead. Many of you are at odds with a lover or a romantic partner. You might be fighting. Fortunately, this kind of situation will blow hot and cold because while Mars makes you fight, Venus will patch things up and create smooth relations for you. It’s a real Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde scene! Meanwhile, retrograde Mercury will create errors, mixed-up communications, equipment breakdowns and missed appointments at work. Knowing this ahead of time, give yourself extra time this week so that you have some wiggle room to cope with the unexpected. Be smart!

Cancer (June 21-July 22)

This is a fun-loving, playful time! (If you’re lucky, you are not reading this column because you’re off somewhere on vacation!) Meanwhile, old flames are back in the picture for some. Many of you are also dealing with old issues regarding your kids. Your challenge at the beginning of this week will be arguments at home. Something will disrupt your home routine that’s for sure. Increased chaos and difficulties dealing with your day-to-day world will require patience on your part. Don’t let this spill over into tension with family members. Fortunately, things at work are smooth. Look for ways to make your workstation more attractive. Expect praise and maybe a raise.

Leo (July 23-Aug. 22)

This is the perfect week to tackle repair projects you’ve been meaning to get to at home because you will finish these tasks easily. (Why didn’t I do this earlier?) Meanwhile, social occasions, dates, movies, musical performances and fun outings, especially with kids, will please you. Your challenge will be the fact that you’re at odds with someone this week. A power struggle with a sibling, relative or neighbour will be your challenge. You know what you want to achieve; however, someone will block you. Ideally, channel this same energy into changing your daily environment in a creative way that pleases you. This is your winning choice.

Virgo (Aug. 23-Sept. 22)

This is a busy, fast-paced time. Appointments, meetings, tasks, errands plus short trips and increased reading and writing give you a busy agenda. Your challenge is even though you have this busy agenda, you also have to deal with transportation delays, misplaced paperwork, confused communications and problems with how you communicate. It’s a drag. On top of this, a power struggle about finances and money is taking place. Make sure you are on the up and up because anything that is ruthless or underhanded will backfire. Continue with plans to entertain at home and make where you live more attractive. (“Hey, I like what you did with the place!”)

Libra (Sept. 23-Oct. 22)

Many of you are involved in an old financial issue perhaps regarding a previous purchase, or previous job or a way that you earned money or something to do with your current earnings. Hopefully, this will be resolved quickly because Mercury retrograde can help you. Meanwhile, your ability to schmooze and charm others is tops because Venus is travelling through your House of Communications. Nevertheless, fiery Mars is in your sign at odds with Pluto, which means you have power struggles with someone. This might be someone at home or in the family; but it could be anyone. Be careful because the more you push, the greater you will increase their opposition to you. (You catch more flies with honey than with vinegar.)

Scorpio (Oct. 23-Nov. 21)

This continues to be a wonderful time for you because the Sun is in your sign boosting your energy and attracting favourable situations and people to you. Since this happens only once a year, be grateful for this advantage. Admittedly, Mercury is retrograde in your sign creating delays and goofy mistakes. (Groan.) Such is life. But hey, Venus will attract money to you! It will also encourage you to spend money on beautiful things for yourself and loved ones. The thing to watch out for this week is something going on behind the scenes that creates power struggles or obstacles for you. Best to put your cards on the table and be open about whatever troubles you. Be upfront, forthright and clear.

Sagittarius (Nov. 22-Dec. 21)

This continues to be the ideal time to work alone or behind the scenes. In other words, take a back seat in the busy insanity of everything around you and start to identify and define goals for your new year ahead. You are a future oriented sign and when you have goals that you are working towards, you feel better. Ironically, sometimes it doesn’t matter if your goals are achieved but identifying goals still makes a valuable contribution in your life. Eisenhower once said, “In preparing for battle I always found that plans are useless but planning is indispensable.” The process makes you consider many parameters in your life. Avoid a nasty standoff with a friend or a member of a group. Be your charming breezy, self.

Capricorn (Dec. 22-Jan. 19)

Do yourself a favour and steer clear of nasty confrontations with parents, bosses, teachers and the police, especially at the beginning of the week. You won’t win if you wade into an argument. You will lose and you will regret it. Timing is everything. You have to know when to hold and when to fold. Meanwhile, you have been in contact with friends from the past and perhaps members of groups you haven’t seen for a while. Make the most of this. Some of you are also involved in a secret love affair. Others will welcome moments of solitude in beautiful surroundings so that you can catch your breath and make life easier and kinder.

Aquarius (Jan. 20-Feb. 18)

You care about the environment and social issues. any of you are the first to start a petition or urge others to sign one. This week you might get carried away and become involved in an argument about politics, racial issues or religious matters. Don’t do this. Not this week. Stand back and don’t get involved in contentious subjects because the result will be nasty. This is one of those situations where you have to be prudent in order to live to fight another day. Timing is everything. Small wonder you are encountering bosses and authority figures (including parents) you haven’t seen for a while. The good news is you will enjoy the warmth of friends, especially creative, artistic people. Go with what works.

Pisces (Feb. 19-March 20)

Travel plans and anything that you do to expand your experience of life excites you now! This is because you’re eager to grow, learn and explore new avenues! It’s a wonderful time to take a course or go back to school. Meanwhile, you create a fabulous impression on bosses, parents, teachers and VIPs. (They think you walk on water.) Obviously, with this great press, now is the time to make your pitch or ask for a favour or do what you can to advance your agenda. Having said this, there is a spot of trouble in paradise. Disputes about shared property, inheritances, or something that you own jointly with others will arise and be nasty. Avoid these if you can, especially at the beginning of the week.

Handy Love Potions to Have On Hand

Come To Me Lover Oil

Jasmine absolute
Rose attar
Neroli or essential oil of petitgrain
Gardenia absolute (or fragrance oil)
Tuberose absolute

Blend the above into apricot kernel or sweet almond oil. This is the most deluxe love-drawing oil. The ingredients are extremely expensive. It is not required that all of them be used, although the first three are fairly standard. The substitution of petitgrain for neroli will keep the costs down.

Amor Oil

Place a balm of Gilean bud and a piece of coral inside a bottle
Cover these with sweet almond and jojoba oils

Add a few drops of either petitgrain or neroli essential oil plus a drop of tangerine essential oil
Add a bit of ground cinnamon or one drop of essential oil of the cinnamon leaf.

Is a “healthy” free lunch possible?

Do you like free stuff?  Actual quality free stuff…

Hello!

My name is Charlene, merry meet.  If you have been browsing Eupterra’s pages for a while, you have probably discovered that I am a fan of organic, all-natural, raw/paleo food, medicine, and personal care orientated items. (I do hope you have enjoyed many of my articles)

What you may not know is, I am also a hunter and a sucker for freebies, too 🙂

Since I have been doing this for a while and apparently have gotten rather successful at it (from $20 Android Turbo smartphones to free Abercrombie sweaters), by popular demand I have put together a list of some hard-to-find, but really great quality freebie offers centered around something useful in the green/all-natural department and a couple of fan-favorite deals.  Let’s just say I have found this to be a way to try something out that is new, get something real cheap (if not free!) that I like for a while, or just buy gifts for people (you didn’t hear me say that). Check them out, and read below if you want to hear my thoughts on the “system”:

This one is popularly liked for clear reason; Disney movies have a tendency to be good, but expensive and over-priced.  But Disney is known as a leader in hospitality 🙂 If you click the picture above and its link, you can join the Disney Movie Club to get 4 movies for just $1! Simply pick your movies, join the club, and build your library.  That is all it takes, enjoy!

Kiwi.com is becoming a pretty big deal. It allows travelers to find and book the cheapest flights possible. With an extensive database of low-cost flights and traditional airlines, interactive maps, and guaranteed arrival, you can more easily fly with less stress. Due to its success and rapid growth, Kiwi has actually been featured by Business Insider, The New York Times, USA Today.  Want to see nature’s wonders?  Now, you might get to Hawaii on the cheap!  Just click above.

A good wrinkle reducing cream?  Yes, they are out there, and they do actually work to a certain extent.  Here is one good one that provides a free trial, and promotes natural cellular regeneration.  Called Naturacel, I find this great as a gift and as a product.

Grocery gift cards, aren’t they nice?  No matter how good you are at homesteading, urban gardening, or foraging through the woods, you inevitably have to go to the store, right?  Well, here is a chance to get some of those necessities covered.  Check it out, one of my faves!

Here is another one.  Upon taking a survey, you can potentially win a gift card for $1,500 for groceries.  Wouldn’t that be a lot!  Also, it is mobile friendly.

The logic behind my success, and why consumerism is not a bad thing

To explain how I got to be so good at hunting for freebies, especially ones that are truly good quality, here are my thoughts on how I developed a mindset in what to look for and some thoughts on how our culture of consumerism isn’t as self-destructive as it appears made out to be:

Most of us live in a capitalist system, or are connected to it by respective countries.  After the advent of mass production technologies, the largest and pre-dominant corporations among us have as you may have noticed encouraged the development of a consumerism-centric culture to market and employ all sorts of snagging techniques to get you, the consumer, to buy something from them.  Let’s face it, you may have realized this by now, it’s rather hard to resist (Superbowl ads and their cult following, Amazon – how easy is Prime, Walmart – nuff said, Chipotle – gosh, I’m hungry, Coca-Cola – even 3rd world countries in Africa have billboards advertising Coke seriously, etc.).

luv green freebies

Now some of this has been really good for us (let’s not forget Ford Motors and the Model T car making automobile ownership accessible to many Americans), but sometimes it kind of feels like we are being taken advantage of – being pressured to buy all the time!  Rather than debate ethically how “bad” this might be, I think it wise to point out the bright side of this bombardment of sell, sell, sell tactics…

These companies have deep-pockets.  Deep enough that they have no qualms about giving away a lot of “free samples” to get you to buy.  When I say a lot, I mean A LOT!

luv green freebies

Think about this…how many times have you gone to the grocery store and purposely hit up all the “free sample” stations?  Uh-huh, you can be shameless here. The point is, even your local farmer, rancher, winery, deli counter, (insert producer here) is doing it.  And the reason why…Marketing.  They want to market new, or refresh your memory of their product.

So, to take advantage of this online, you can search for almost any high quality deal out there and get a sample of what they have to offer.  The question is knowing the best places to look, and that is the hard part; hence, my above compiled list.  Sometimes, it is a matter of timing – like AT&T stores will sometimes host big giveaways if you just know to keep tabs on when.  Most of the time, it just boils down to a huge amount of digging.

Know somebody who wants to lose weight in your family healthfully?

Or what about one who wants to travel?

How about Disney movies (The Lion King, WALL-E, Bambi, Jungle Book, Free Willy, Disneynature’s Oceans)? Check out this cool guide to Disney’s top eco-themed movies by Smithsonian.com.

All these and more can all be gotten for a heck of a deal, and you know what, you should not feel bad about it.  Not. One. Cent.

Why?

Because consumerism is built to take advantage of you, the consumer, by employing such a plethora of marketing and advertising techniques that somehow, someway you will eventually be convinced to buy from them.  It is just a matter of time and your specific individual desires and needs. Those companies/producers know eventually they will get a return for their samples and efforts – aka profit.

This doesn’t have to be a bad thing, nor does it mean that you can’t take control of yourself. In fact, this gives us, the consumer, a democratic voice.  Yes, that is right, capitalism and democracy go hand-in-hand on the free market for this one  – what you choose eventually determines the next course headed in by profit chasing corporations.  That is, we – together – can be the ultimate influence on our environment…

Ethical/Conscious Consumerism

Here me out on this one.  When one chooses to buy, let’s say a new flatscreen TV or a new grass-fed beef to grill, the “producer” or company earns a profit.  They want profits.  So, if they notice you buying only the cheapest, most likely to break item without care or concern for the sweat-shop labor that probably produced it, then they will respond as “the consumer wants more of these” and produce more of the same kind.  However, what if people chose something different?  What if you chose to buy quality, long-lasting, hand-made, sustainable/fair trade goods that inevitably had a positive impact on the world in terms of: jobs had, bio-degradable/less landfill space occupying, more effective medicines/less side-effects, healthier for you food, less disease causing pollution/pathogen methods, and more humane practices for animals.

Maybe even a boost to your local economy?

The companies would respond in kind, right?  They would respond by producing what you the consumer wants: a better world.

Don’t believe me? Let’s take a look at some natural examples, as I am so fond to do, of this principle in action.  What did Darwin call it – survival of the fittest!

luv green freebies

Ex. A – Bees & Flowers

Bees and a large variety of other insects select flowers to collect pollen and drink nectar on.  What flowers they choose end up propagating more seeds (plants can’t easily propagate themselves). Those plants go on to dominate the next generation in terms of numbers of offspring.  Thus, if one plant produces extra large amounts of nectar or really beautiful attractive flowers, the bees will come en masse to those ones and perhaps not pay as much attention to the rest.  A choice?  The bees have as consumers in essence directed what flowers the flowering plants will produce more of over time.

Perhaps this explains why we have such a wide-selection of wonderful flowers everywhere…they are all trying to advertise and market to us!

luv green freebies

Ex. B – Seeds & Beaks

In one of Darwin’s famous examples of presenting evolution through natural selection, he provided the case study of the Galapagos Island finch.  Or should I say, finches.  Although the Galapagos Island bird population started as just one species, in order to get access to all the different kinds of seeds more easily across the islands, the bird’s beaks adapted to the shape best fit for each seed.  Thus, the birds became many different kinds of finches, albeit rather related to one another. Thus, the choice of specializing as consumers of seeds produced caused a change in the species itself.

What kind of conclusion may we be drawing from this?  Could we say that nature is…

*gasp!

…a consumerism-centric system?

Whoa!

Well, maybe nature is not consumerist in the sense that capitalism is, but there is definitely a relationship between consumers and producers.  The same relationship we see in human civilization today.  The difference is, unlike our animal counterparts, we are actually sentient.  We can make choices much more thought-out then our furry, feathered, scaly, slimy, buzzy brethren friends.

If we choose to make our world a better place today by employing conscientious consumerism that takes into account the ethics, methods, and long-lasting effects of the goods and services we desire on top of the quality of those same things that we need, can you imagine 7 billion people choosing for society to change for the healthier and more sustainable way?

We can do this everyday 🙂

Capitalism and consumerism need not be mankind’s destructive legacy.  We do not have to suffer in thought of a bleak future caused by our ignorant actions to rape our planet, drain our resources, pollute ourselves to disease and misery, and replace our jobs in every single way.  We can in fact use it to our greatest advantage, a weapon that would be our greatest strength.

The choice is yours, I only encourage you to choose sustainably~

Is it possible that eating wild honey created from the pollen of certain types of flowers can make a person feel a bit “under the influence”?

rhododendron honey deli bal

In this article, we look into the effects of rhododendron pollen in the medicinal honey called “deli bal” frequently found in regions of the Black Sea.

Watch as a group quest to “hunt” mad honey with members of a tribe in Nepal to find out!

Hallucinogenic Honey

Interested in trying rhododendron honey?  Although different than those produced in Turkey and Nepal, Fabrizio’s family in Italy collects honey from rhododendron flowers for those interested in a try!

Learn more about Hallucinogenic Honey

The story of “hallucinogenic honey” starts in Turkey. It is a dark, reddish honey, known as deli bal in Turkey.  It contains an ingredient from rhododendron nectar called grayanotoxin, which is a natural neurotoxin. In small quantities, it brings on light-headedness and sometimes, hallucinations.

In the 1700s, the Black Sea region traded this potent produce with Europe, where the honey was infused with drinks to give boozers a greater high than alcohol could deliver. Wow!

Remember Absinthe and its famous wormwood infused properties…

warning for mad honeyWhen over-imbibed, however, the honey can cause low blood pressure and irregularities in the heartbeat that bring on nausea, numbness, blurred vision, fainting, potent hallucinations, seizures, and even death, in rare cases.

Nowadays, cases of mad honey poisoning crop up every few years—oftentimes in travelers who have visited Turkey.

Check out this song inspired by “mad honey”

If there are rhododendrons everywhere, why is mad honey found only in Turkey?

Mad honey is most common in the region fringing the Black Sea — the biggest honey-producing region in Turkey. Yet, it is produced from rhododendrons, and these plants grow in vast areas, all over the world!

Because:
Though, there are more than 700 different species of rhododendron in the world, only two or three include grayanotoxin in their nectars. (says Dr. Süleyman Turedi, who studies deli bal’s effects, doctor at the Karadeniz Technical University School of Medicine in Trabzon, Turkey.): Rhododendron ponticum and Rhododendron luteum.

The mountains around the Black Sea provide the perfect habitat for these flowers to grow in monocrop-like swaths. Bees arrive in these fields, where there are no other flowers, so no other nectar gets mixed in. It results a pure, potent honey.

Why are the Turks producing it?

Because they are using it as medicine. 🙂
Hallucinogenic or “mad” honey is used in the indigenous Black Sea area to treat hypertension, diabetes mellitus, and some different stomach diseases. And, some people use deli bal to improve their sexual performance.”

The honey is taken in small amounts, sometimes boiled in milk, and consumed just before breakfast. This means it is considered medicine and taken likewise, not on toast or with tea.

Is it legal?

It is legal in Turkey. And we can also find it over the internet. Hallucinogenic honey is expensive and hard to be sure it’s the real thing. The beekeepers who produce it typically only sell it in a closed circle.

After how much mad honey are we poisoned?

If anybody eats more than 1 spoonful of hallucinogenic honey including grayanotoxin, is at risk of mad honey poisoning! And if we refer to fresh honey, than we should eat even less than 1 teaspoon.

Science facts:

“Many plants of the Ericaceae family, Rhododendron, Pieris, Agarista and Kalmia, contain diterpene grayanotoxins. Consuming the honey made from these plats may result in intoxication specifically characterized by dizziness, hypotension and atrial-ventricular block.
Symptoms are caused by an inability to inactivate neural sodium ion channels resulting in continuous increased vagal tone.

Grayanotoxin containing products are currently sold online, which may pose an increasing risk. In humans, intoxication is rarely lethal, in contrast to cattle and pet poisoning cases.
Scientific evidence for the medicinal properties of grayanotoxin containing preparations, such as honey or herbal preparation in use in folk medicine, is scarce, and such use may even be harmful.” (according to www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov)

Nutrition & Beauty

honey

You are what you eat as the old saying goes.  Now, in almost any circumstance, I would entirely agree with this statement; however, there is one additional point I like to bring up as a side-note to this and that is applying that old adage little by little every day.

Nutrition – is a hallmark of humanity.  Without good nutrition, we are nothing without our health.  We cannot grow, live, or be ourselves among each other unless we are functioning well on a basic level.  If you are sick all the time, are you living well?  Nutrition can play a vast role in this, among many things. In addition, it can affect not just your physical but your mental health.  I personally favor eating a more raw natural diet and will speak on this much, but there will be some discussion as to classically cooked meals as well.

Beauty – speaking of mental, here is one aspect that affects any one of us (and I am not just looking at teenagers here). How we see ourselves, and how we at least think we are seen by others plays a subtle or sometimes prominent factor in our everyday lives.  We like to express who we are, and if what we wish to “say” isn’t “showing” as we desire, it causes anguish, doesn’t it?  We wish to look ourselves as much as be ourselves, no matter what gender or race.  Am I right 🙂

Nutrition & Beauty go hand-in-hand on so many things, so much so I thought to dedicate an entire primary page to this foundational topic.  Feel free to comment in any one of the articles below on your thoughts concerning these all natural suggestions.  And remember, it is wisest to figure out what works best for you (food-wise and beauty-wise) and then do that little by little everyday.  I think you will be amazed at that simple work and its results.

Feel confused as to what is good for you per say?  Read on, the best tip is to think, try, and learn!

Ayurveda body types and diet recommendations

Ayurveda recommends foods for people according to their primary body type. The reason this is done is because it is believed foods can be both healing and the source of imbalance and difficulties. By eating foods according to our Ayurvedic body type, the belief is that we will accumulate less Ama, or waste, in the body.

In Ayurveda, people are classified according to three principles: vata, kapha, and pitta. It’s important to understand that although we may be dominant in one principle, we actually have all three present in our body. The others are in a smaller ration. Most people will actually be a combination of two of these principles, with the third only playing a minor role. But because we all contain the three, any of them can get out of balance.

So, let’s see what body type are you!

Dratini_to_Dragonite_by_Iahdo

Pitta

Characteristics of Pitta dominant body types

  • determination
  • strong willed
  • good digestion
  • initiative
  • energy
  • passionate about many things

Ayurveda’s Pitta constitution is calmed by cooling foods, such as fresh fruit and vegetables. Bitter green vegetables like watercress, parsley, collards, and most greens suit pitta. Fruits that suit pitta body types include sweet berries, sweet apples and apricots, coconut, figs, mango, sweet oranges and pineapples, plums, watermelon, pomegranates, and prunes.

Other cooling foods include most dairy products, though sour cream, hard cheeses, and yoghurt don’t really suit pitta due to their being too high in fat, salt, or sourness. But dairy that suits pitta includes milk, cottage cheese, soft cheeses, and ice cream.

Grains that suit pitta body types include barley, basmati rice, and wheat (unless you are allergic or gluten sensitive).

Pitta body types generally like a lot of protein, and they probably need a little more than the other Ayurvedic body types. Spices that are cooling in nature are also important. These include coriander, cumin, mint, parsley, dill, and fennel. Garlic should be avoided though as it is too heating.

In terms of sweets, Pitta body types should use maple syrup, barley malt, brown rice syrup, and honey that is 6 months or less old, preferably raw.

Things that can imbalance Pitta body types:

  • excess heat, hot climates, and hot times of day
  • humidity
  • vacations and times when there is increased mobility
  • excess oil in the diet
  • too many hot foods, including spicy foods. But this can also mean too many cooked meals
  • excess caffeine, salt, red meat and alcohol

Vata

Characteristics of people with a dominant Vata body type:

  • flexibility
  • quick mind
  • creative
  • always on the go – mentally and physically

Dietary choices that support vata aim at grounding this energy-in-motion. Routine is also very helpful, though not naturally something vata body type people will create. Vata people benefit from meditation, warmth, soothing music, taking breaks, and resting (again, not a natural vata inclination!).

With regards to food, vata body types should include warming spices, including ginger and cloves, anise, cayenne, cinnamon, garlic, horseradish, caraway, mint, mustard seeds, parsley, cooked onion, paprika, rose water, vanilla, tarragon, thyme, and rosemary.

People with the vata body type should minimize raw food, including salad, though salads should not be eliminated completely as they provide valuable nutrients. Vata should ground the salad with a dressing made from oil and vinegar, and be aware of the weather at the time of eating it. Being more sensitive to cold, vata’s should have salads on warmer days.

Icy cold drinks are not balancing for vata – in fact quite the opposite. Sugar also throws vata types off balance, though vata are lucky in that they can enjoy other sweets.

Vata generally love fruit, and it suits their ayurvedic constitution. The exceptions are apples, pears, cranberries, watermelon, and dried fruit. Vata types should go for sweet and moist fruit, like mangoes, nectarines, bananas, coconut, fresh figs, peaches, and strawberries.

Cooked grains like oatmeal, basmati rice, and brown rice, are very grounding for the vata ayurvedic constitution. Beans (legumes), on the other hand, are not! Beans are cold, dry, and heavy – not the attributes that support vata.

Things that can imbalance vata dominant body types include:

  • a lot of travel, especially by plane
  • loud noises
  • constant stimulation
  • drugs, sugar, and alcohol
  • cold climates (especially extremely cold ones) and cold food
  • frozen and dried food

Kapha

Characteristics of people with a kapha dominant body type:

  • strength
  • stamina
  • endurance
  • groundedness
  • calm
  • fluid

Kapha body types are not suited to a high protein diet like the Atkins diet. Not only should they avoid too much fat, but also, excessive heavy protein. The kapha quality is already heavy, and although this doesn’t sound great, it is what provides Kapha body types with a wonderful stability and strength.

Kapha should have light and low fat protein. Beans, with the exception of soy and soy products, are great for kapha. Soy milk is preferable to dairy though, for kapha. Beans help move kapha’s energy, and digestive system, a bit. Barley is also excellent. In terms of meat, chicken and turkey suit kapha.

Kapha body types should have plenty of vegetables, including bitter vegetables, peppers, broccoli, brussel sprouts, cauliflower, eggplant, lettuce, onions, potatoes, mushrooms, corn cobs, peas, beets, and celery.

Dairy is heavy and cooling, and it does not suit the Kapha ayurvedic body type. Light and crispy food, like corn tortillas and popcorn, suit kapha. Kapha people should make sure they have variety in their diet, as kapha body types have a danger of falling into a rut more than others.

Asian and Latin American style meals are great for kapha. They are spicy and light, free of dairy, and have plenty of vegetables in them.

Things that can imbalance Kapha body types:

  • inertia
  • too much fat in the diet, including oil we cook with!
  • dairy products
  • not enough stimulation and challenge
  • not enough variety
  • not enough exercise
  • too much bread, iced foods and drinks, and sweets

Understanding one’s self can have a major impact on the quality of your health and life.
