(One Person’s View) Who Is Bastet? Complete Guide to the Egyptian Cat Goddess

Bastet/Bast

Lion and cat and woman, goddess of war and fertility—the Egyptian goddess Bast (also known as Bastet) contains multitudes. While she’s not the only cat goddess from ancient history, Bastet is probably the most famous cat goddess today. She has a strong presence in pop culture and a select few even still worship her!

In this complete guide to Bastet, we’ll go over exactly what makes this Egyptian cat goddess so compelling. We’ll describe her attributes, how she was depicted in ancient Egypt, her major relationships, how she was worshipped, her major myths, and the history of her worship. We’ll close out with where you might encounter Bast, goddess of cats, today.

Who Is Bastet? What Are Her Attributes?

The goddess we most frequently call “Bastet” today was known as both “Bast” and “Bastet” in ancient Egypt.

“Bast” was her earlier name. It possibly meant either “Soul of Auset” (Auset being an alternative name for “Isis,” who is sometimes considered her mother), or “devouring lady.”

Later, priests called her “Bastet” to indicate that the “t” in her name should be pronounced. “Bastet” shares one of the same hieroglyphs for the bas jar, which held perfumes and ointments. So “Bastet” also meant “she of the ointment jar.”

Bast was originally a lioness goddess, but as time went on, she was more closely associated with the housecat. The cat was her totem animal.

As one of the main goddesses of the Egyptian pantheon, Bastet had a huge number of attributes and aspects:

  • She was a goddess of cats, the sun, of the East, of fire, of love, intoxication, music and dancing, joy, celebration, fertility, secrets, magic, and sex.
  • However, she was also a goddess of war known for her wrathful vengeance.
  • She protected households and individuals from disease and evil spirits, guarded pregnant women, and protected cats.
  • She served as the divine nurse and mother of the Pharaoh.
  • Due to Bastet meaning “she of the ointment jar” she also became known also as a goddess of perfume, and was called the “perfumed protector.”
  • Bast/Bastet was the protector and guardian of Lower Egypt.
  • She was the patron goddess of fire fighters, because the Egyptians believed that a cat running through a building on fire would draw the flames out.
  • She was also one of the goddesses who was known as the “eye of Ra” or the “eye of Atum,” the sun. In this aspect she symbolized Ra’s feminine counterpart and was sent out to take vengeance on his enemies. The “eye of Ra” was both a part of Ra and a separate being from him, and was considered his mother, sister, wife, and daughter simultaneously. She had life-giving, protective and also destructive capacities.

Depictions of Bastet: Her Symbols and Totems

Bast was first depicted primarily as a lioness, then later as a cat or cat-headed woman. In her aspect as a cat-headed woman she frequently holds a sistrum decorated with cats and Click here to read the rest of this article

Strengthen Boundaries

Boundaries help keep us safe, whether physically, mentally, or emotionally. Sometimes we let our boundaries slip and need to quickly build them back up. This spell is designed to help strengthen or rebuild the emotional boundaries you already have in place.

Dress a black candle with black pepper oil.

Sprinkle some black pepper oil onto a sage smudge, and light it with the black candle.

Smudge yourself in front of the black candle with the sage.

Imagine the sage and black pepper building a wall around you, the sage on the inside, protecting you and keeping you safe, and the black pepper on the outside, repelling anything or anybody you don’t want to get in.

Make sure to thoroughly smudge yourself, or have a trusted friend assist you.

Flashback 2002 Lammas

Lammas is the first of the harvest festivals and this year despite the fiery Sun, it has a strong, sensual feel of cardinal earth. Mars lends a masculine energy to the Sun this week to help with the organizing for this bread festival. Round cornbread as a solar disk is an apt and easy choice for the altar, but if you plan several days ahead, you can sprout a small amount (1/4 cup) of wheat or barely for kitchen witchery. Add this to your other grains to your own bread from scratch; or buy frozen bread dough, thaw, pat into a rectangle, and sprinkle the sprouted grains. Roll up your dough like a jelly roll and place in a greased bread pan into which you have sprinkled Irish oats. You can use a sharp knife to crave goddess symbols into the loaf before baking.

Chrysanthemums, Chocolate, Cotton, Feathers, Figs, Honey, Milk, Sunflowers.

Bast is the Egyptian Goddess, also known as Bastet, whose mission is to protect the home.

She symbolizes the joy of living as it is considered the deity of harmony and happiness. She was typically represented in the form of a domestic cat, or as a woman with the head of a cat, always carrying a sistrum (musical instrument) because she was especially pleased by humans dancing and playing music in her honor.

The cult of Bast was so important that cats were raised in her temples to be her representation, and at the death of these, they were carefully mummified and buried in specific tombs for them.

In her warrior aspect, she was a lioness with green skin and in this aspect she was associated with sunlight. She was a solar goddess until the identification of the Greeks with her lunar goddess Artemis.

Devotional text

Mother of the gods, the One, the Only,

Mistress of the Crowns, you rule all.

Sekhmet is your name when you are wrathful,

Bast, beloved, when your people call.

Daughter of the Sun, with flame and fury

Flashing from the prow upon the foe.

Safely sails the Boat with your protection

Passing scatheless where your fires glow.

Daughter of the Sun, the burial chamber

Lies in the darkness till your light appears.

From your Throne of Silence send us comfort,

Bast, beloved, banish all our fears.

Mother of the Gods, no Gods existed

Till you came there and gave them life.

Sekhmet of the Boat, the wicked fear you

Trampling down all evil and all strife.

Mother of the Gods, the great, the loved one,

Winged and mighty, unto you we call,

Naming you the Comforter, the Ruler,

Bast, beloved, Mother of us all.

Bast, descend upon me. Fill me with you.

Expel all evil forces from me.

Destroy and banish all witchcraft, bonds and curses.

Drive out all obsession, envy, jealousy. Physical, mental, moral, spiritual illness.

Use your strength to command all evil spirits,

all presences that bother me, to abandon me immediately.

Let them withdraw me forever and burn in eternal hell.

I remain protected, armored, anointed, sealed and cleaned.

Inside and out, in your name, Bast.

With your presence and your powerful armor,

I consecrate and surrender my night, with my sleep and my rest.

My day and all my activities.

Take away everything that could harm me.

Any envies, accusations, revenge, anger, betrayals,

hatred, phobias, fears, doubts, confusion, lies, deceptions,

bitterness, and depressions.

Help me so that nobody can cause me damage,

and forgive me for any harm that I have caused so far.

May your power defend me and set me free.

Bast, beloved, banish all my fears.

You are the divine Flame,

you are the great Flame at the prow of the Boat of your father.

Praise to you who are mightier than the Gods.

Some of the Witchcraft/Magickal Correspondence for Saturday

(YOU CAN COPY AND PASTE ANY COROSPONDENCES POSTED TO A DOCUMENT TO PRINT AND/OR SAVE ON YOUR COMPUTER)

Saturday

Saturday is a day filled with opportunities to clean up and clear out. So if you are wondering why Hecate is assigned to this day, take another look at what she symbolizes and the magick that is associated with her. That should answer the question.

Hecate was the oldest form of the Greek Triple Goddess, as she presided over heaven, the underworld, and earth. Crossroads where three roads met were especially sacred to Hecate, earning her the title of Hekate of the Three Ways. It’s interesting to note that even after the worship of other goddesses waned, ancient people still worshiped Hecate as the Queen of the Underworld and the Guardian of the Three-Way Crossroad. It was also believed that if you left her an offering of food there, she would grant you her favors. As Hecate Trivia, her triple images were often displayed at these crossroads, where she was petitioned on the full moon for positive magick and on the dark of the moon for cursing and dark magick.

While this last bit of information sounds a little ominous, keep in mind that Hecate/Hekate was known by many titles and is a shapeshifter. Her appearance could and did change often. As a dark moon goddess, her faces are many. To some she may appear as a old crone, hunched over a smoking cauldron and draped in a midnight cape. To others she may appear as a dark beautiful, mysterious, and mature woman wearing a shimmering crown. To some she may be perceived as a maiden priestess. She was called the “most lovely one,” the Great Goddess of Nature, and the Queen of the World of Spirits. This dark goddess knows her way around the earth and the underworld. All the powers of nature, life, and death are at her command.

Flashback 2002 Imbolc

Imbolc is an important day of purification and initiation; on the Sun’s day, February 2, the energies are very airy. This Sabbat is a good day for coven work, with an emotionally detached masculine Moon and Sun on the Sun’s day.

Dress yourself and your altar in white, while serving white beverages or any dairy food to honor the calving season. Spread the top of a one-pound round Camembert or Bire cheese with raspberry preserves. Cut a circle of puff pastry large enough to cover the cheese, wrap it, tucking the ends of the pastry under. Use scraps to decorate the top with goddess symbols. Brush with beaten egg yolk. Bake at 425 degrees until golden, and serve hot and melting on crackers. During this ritual, bless and dedicate all candles you will need for other ritual work throughout the year. A good way to start the ceremony is to light candles in the darkened room with chanting to encourage the lengthening days.

Moon Phase

The Moon’s current phase for today and tonight is a Waning Crescent phase. This phase is best viewed just before the sunrise in the western sky. In this phase the Moon’s illumination is growing smaller each day until the New Moon. During this part of the Moon cycle, the Moon is getting closer to the Sun as viewed from Earth and the night side of the Moon is facing the Earth with only a small edge of the Moon being illuminated. It can also be a great time to see the features of the Moon’s surface. Along the edge where the illuminated portion meets the dark side, the craters and mountains cast long shadows making them easier to observe with a telescope or binoculars.

Visit the January 2025 Moon Phases Calendar to see all the daily moon phase for this month.

Today’s Waning Crescent Phase

The Waning Crescent on January 25 has an illumination of 16%. This is the percentage of the Moon illuminated by the Sun. The illumination is constantly changing and can vary up to 10% a day. On January 25 the Moon is 25.66 days old. This refers to how many days it has been since the last New Moon. It takes 29.53 days for the Moon to orbit the Earth and go through the lunar cycle of all 8 Moon phases.

Today’s Moon Sign: ♐ Sagittarius

The current zodiac moon sign is Sagittarius, positioned at 14.82° within the sign. The Moon entered Sagittarius on Jan 24, 5:05 AM and will shift into Capricorn on Jan 26, 8:21 AM. 26 January, 2025 Current Moon Phase for the Southern Hemisphere

Source: nineplanets.org

The current moon phase for January 26th, 2025 is the Waning Crescent phase.

On this day, the moon is 26.15 days old and 12.69% illuminated with a tilt of -56.092°. The approximate distance from Earth to the moon is 390,077.96 km and the moon sign is Sagittarius.

The Moon phase for January 26th, 2025 is a Waning Crescent phase. This is the phase where the moon is less than 50% illuminated but has not yet reached 0% illumination (which would be a New Moon).

In this part of the moon cycle, it is getting closer and closer to the Sun as viewed from Earth and the night side of the Moon is facing earth with a decreasingly thin crescent being illuminated.

The waning (shrinking) crescement Moon will rise at around midnight, transit the meridian after sunrise, before setting after noon. This phase is best viewed 1-2 hours before sunrise and is a great time to see the features of the Moon’s surface. Along the illuminated crescent you can see the craters and mountains of the moon casting long shadows.

The Waxing Gibbous phase, like all moon phases, will last for just over 7 days. The actual length will vary because of the elliptical shaped orbit of the moon. During this Waxing Gibbous phase the moon will rise in the east in the mid- to late-afternoon and will be high in the eastern sky at sunset.

Assuming it’s a clear night, the Waxing Gibbous moon will then be visible through most of the night before setting just before sunrise.

Fun fact: the illuminated side of a waning crescent moon is always pointed eastwards, towards the sunrise.

Spell for Friday – Candle Magick for Rocky Times

(YOU CAN COPY AND PASTE ANY SPELLS POSTED TO A DOCUMENT TO PRINT AND/OR SAVE ON YOUR COMPUTER FOR PERSONAL USE ONLY)

LOVE SPELL WARNING: Love spells such as this one take the person who you want to love you free will/spirit away. What happens with a spell like this is the person will become obsessed with you to the point of possibly losing their job, which in turn can make them lose their home, automobile, friends, their family, etc. I have heard of people under love spells dying from not eating or drinking when they are not in the presence of the spellcaster 24/7/365. So, unless you want some who only loves you because of a spell you put on them then go for it. But if you want someone to love you because they feel that emotion towards you then please do not do this spell. The same warning goes for animals, birds, reptiles, or anything else that has a heart and can create a bond with someone.

Candle Magick for Rocky Times

You will need:

Pink Candle

The Spell:

A love candle with oils and herbs hidden in a secret place instills confidence in our power to be good lovers. It is a secret source of inspiration when times are hard and you need to work through problems that arise in your relationship.

Hold a pink candle and charge it for future spells, by visualizing you and your lover in a happy loving embrace. Put the energy from this vision into the candle. The say out loud:

“We will always love each other.
May the Goddess and God grant this.
for the good of all.”

When problems arise in your relationship or you need self-confidence, take out the candle on a Friday during a waxing moon and anoint it with love oil using this procedure: Put some oil on your index finger, and beginning in the middle of the candle, run your finger to the wick end. Then repeat, rubbing the oil down to the bottom of the candle. Light the candle and let it burn down completely and go out.

Protection Spells

Protection spells are intended to prevent, protect, and repel danger. Many find this category confusing so lets be very clear. There is no magic spell that functions exactly like an around response from a personal security guard one might hire for service. Locking your door may prevent a human thief. However, certain danger can only be repelled by magical methods. These dangers include:

*Malicious spells, hexes, jinxes, magic “tricks” or negative enchantment cast deliberately against one person by another.

*The evil eye

*Assorted spiritual danger deriving from a vast variety of spiritual sources. These may be caused deliberately or inadvertently.

Although these dangers derive from magical and spiritual roots, they may manifest in very physical ways, as illness, accidents, and general disaster. However, because there derivation is at least partly magical, prevention and remedies must also be at least partly magical.

Tips for successfully casting Protection spells

* Number 5: The number of fingers on each hand is the number most associated with magical protection, as are the magic numbers Seven and Nine.

*Color: Red, black, and blue are the colours most associated with magical protection.

(Note Protection is different from Reversing)

The Moon phase for January 24th, 2025 is a Waning Crescent phase.
