Halloween: The Past in the Present

Halloween: The Past in the Present
by Elspeth Sapphire

The days are shortening and dark comes early.  There is a certain crispness to the air as we stroll the streets.  Before long, the leaves are turning bright colors, only to slowly drift down to cover yards and streets.

Yes, autumn is here.

And with autumn comes a holiday enjoyed by both old and young…Halloween.

What is the appeal of this night?  Why do we find people ranging from infants to grandparents donning costumes and for one night forgetting the mundane?

Halloween, or Samhain to the Pagans, has caught the imagination of people throughout the ages.  From the ancient rituals honoring the dead to our modern custom of trick or treating, this one night is our time to put aside any fear of the dark and embrace any that walk there as welcome. Halloween costumes have become a huge part of the tradition of Halloween now as well to remind people what we used to fear and to have a little fun with it.

The ancients chose this time of year to celebrate the dead. The harvests were done and the fields laid empty.  The days of sun were at a end and the days of dark were beginning.  What better time to celebrate the powers of darkness.

This was not a celebration of fear; not always has darkness equaled fear.  Instead for those who believed in rebirth, it was a time to reach and touch those beliefs.  Just as the fields now laid bare, they would flower again in the spring.  And so it was with us, dying only to be reborn.

So many of our Halloween customs can be traced to the past and the habits of our ancestors.  Each time I look at the jack-o- lanterns shining with devilish grins, I can picture the original lanterns.  Turnips were hollowed out and candles placed inside to protect them from the wind.  These lanterns were placed on window sills to guide the dead back to their kin.

Since the apple harvest was celebrated at this same time, apples often played an important place in the festivals.  When you bob for apples or dangle apples on strings, you are walking in the footsteps of other people and other times.

What would Halloween be without costumes and masks?  Yet, have many of us wondered why we so enjoying the wearing of costumes? Dressing up frees us from the ties of our everyday life.  For a brief moment of time, we become a princess or an Indian or a cartoon character.  This gives us a freedom of action that we normally wouldn’t have.

Masks have also long been associated with death and the gods. Was early man trying to understand death when he put on a mask of a dead one? Perhaps, donning a mask could put us in touch with the gods themselves.

The black cat, familiar to many a storybook witch, was priced because cats could sense the dead.  They could be used as a kind of early warning system.  Why black cats?  What better color for this time when the darkness rules?

Every where I look, I come face to face with the stereotyped image of the witch.  Wicked or not, they all looked alike: greenish skin, a wart, misshapened face, dressed all in black. In these days of striving for the politically correct, many are trying to remove this image from Halloween celebrations.  I guess they don’t see what I do.  I look at the Halloween witches and remember pictures of the dark Goddess, dressed in black and with her high pointed hat.  She would wait at the crossroads to guide the dead to their rest until the time of rebirth.  Evil?  I don’t believe so, anymore than I believe death is evil.  Instead it is one more symbol that has passed down through the years to spice October 31st.

Just look around.  We are surrounded by symbols of the past that we take for granted.  The brooms the witches rode.  The cauldrons that bubbled with potions vile.  Even trick or treating could be traced back to Celts who went house to house collecting treats of apples.

It has been truly said that there is nothing new under the sun. However, this doesn’t have to hinder our enjoyment.  On Halloween night, you can find me walking the night.  Without fear, I will travel, listening to the laughter of the children, as I go back to another time and place.

For The Kids…….

While I was searching for graphics, I ran across some fun things for our children. One was a site that had print out graphics for children to color. I will be posting some of these off and on during the Holiday season. If you would like to visit the site, it’s url is http://www.coloring.ws/halloween-witch.htm

Valentine’s Day Horoscopes 2013

Valentine’s Day Horoscopes 2013

Venus and the Moon align in the name of love

Maria DeSimone     Maria DeSimone on the topics of venus, valentines day, love, horoscopes, astrology

Isn’t it nice when the planets cooperate on a special day? When it comes to matters of the heart, there is no greater cosmic connection than to have a happy link between love planet Venus and the Moon, which rules our deep emotional needs and tender feelings. These two planets together spell affection, hugs, kisses and warmth for Valentine’s Day 2013.

Lucky for us, this Valentine’s Day we get to enjoy an extraordinary link between the Moon and Venus! As if that wasn’t enough, the Sun (masculine energy) and the Moon (feminine energy) will also be at a gorgeous angle to one another, allowing your emotions to shine through with ease.

In fact, because the Moon will be in fiery Aries this Valentine’s Day, you can expect to feel a strong amount of courage when it comes to telling the object of your affection exactly how you feel. You might be bold and make the first move to ask someone out on a date if you’re single and someone has captured your attention.

No Valentine this year? Well, don’t expect to have one of those lonely, pathetic Valentine’s Days where you stare at happy couples with bitter resentment. Not with the Moon in independent Aries connected to the Sun and Venus in social Aquarius!

Instead, you and your single friends might decide to throw your own Valentine’s Day friendship bash or attend a party and mingle. Either way, your sexy factor will definitely be in high gear!

Look up your zodiac sign below to get your individual love forecast for Valentine’s Day.

Aries (March 21 – April 19)

You’re hot and you know it! Be sure to wear red, as it’s not only the color of passion, but with the Moon in your sign this Valentine’s Day it will bring you extra attention. You’ll feel a special balance when it comes to getting your emotional needs met by a partner because he or she will easily honor that part of you that needs to be free and independent. Love doesn’t need to equal suffocation, and this year if you’re attached you will certainly feel as if you’ve achieved the best of both worlds. If you’re single, it’s possible for love to blossom between you and a friend.

Taurus (April 20 – May 20)

Love and respect go hand-in-hand, and these days you’ll certainly feel proud to walk beside your sweetheart and call him or her yours. There’s something about your partner that elevates your status, and this makes you especially gratified. If there have been any feelings you’ve kept to yourself, today might be the time you open up and courageously reveal all of you to your special someone. If you’re a Taurus who has been dating someone for a while, with Saturn in your 7th House of Partnership, it’s likely a new level of commitment will develop between you and your love — possibly even leading to engagement or marriage!

Gemini (May 21 – June 20)

Expect nothing less than breathtaking adventure this Valentine’s Day! The Moon will connect beautifully to the Sun and Venus, now in your 9th House of Expansion. There might be a new love interest on the horizon — someone with a background quite different from yours. If so, this person will grab your attention like no other! At the very least, you and your love will enjoy a romantic dinner at a restaurant with exotic cuisine. With Jupiter in your sign, there’s no limit to your capacity to relate to others with enthusiasm and optimism. Any relationship — whether new or old — will stimulate you intellectually, much to your delight. This is perfect, because for you the mind is the most important erogenous zone.

Cancer (June 21 – July 22)

Whether you’re single or attached, this Valentine’s Day has special romantic potential. Single Cancer may plan a vacation or spiritual retreat, or decide to attend a workshop. If so, don’t be surprised if you meet someone you develop a strong emotional bond with. Thanks to a gorgeous link between Mars and Saturn, now in your 5th House of True Love, you’ll have a strong capacity to meet someone who can teach you how to express the deeper meaning of love. In a relationship? Mars will connect to Pluto, now in your 7th House of Partnership. You, too, will have a chance to forge a deeper intimate connection with your mate, but it’ll require a more physical expression of love.

Leo (July 23 – Aug. 22)

Emotional freedom and healthy boundaries will be important to maintain in a relationship this Valentine’s Day. Lucky for you, it’ll be easy to get exactly what you want out of love. The Moon will embrace both the Sun and Venus, now in your 7th House of Committed Partnership. Relationship harmony will be at an all-time high, and it’s possible that you and your mate will agree on exploring unusual — even nontraditional — parameters that will help strengthen your bond. Don’t worry about what the rest of the world thinks; your love might be off the beaten path, but it’s definitely real. Treasure it!

Virgo (Aug. 23 – Sept. 22)

With transformative Pluto slowly making his way through your 5th House of True Love, you don’t need a special day to get your heartstrings pulled. A romantic experience is likely to quickly become intense and all consuming — for better or worse. Happily, this Valentine’s Day there are spectacular links to support love and depth in the most soul-satisfying way. Mars, now in your 7th House of Committed Partnership, will connect beautifully to Pluto, giving you the impetus to go after the level of depth you really want with someone close. Although this aspect will peak the day after Valentine’s Day, you will absolutely feel it pull at your heartstrings now. When it comes to love, it’s all or nothing. Thankfully, you’re in a position to have it all.

Libra (Sept. 23 – Oct. 22)

You have officially won the jackpot of love this Valentine’s Day! The incredible links of the Moon to the Sun and Venus will fall between your 5th House of True Love (Sun and Venus are there) and your 7th House of Partnership (the Moon is there). Your romantic prospects are strong, but so is your potential to forge a deep, lasting emotional bond with whomever you choose to be your Valentine. And with Venus in Aquarius in your 5th House of Dating and Pleasure, you can expect plenty of suitors to choose from! The best part will be that whomever captures your heart will be your friend first, and then your lover. A perfect foundation for true love indeed!

Scorpio (Oct. 23 – Nov. 21)

Sexy Mars will be in your 5th House of Love and Pleasure on Valentine’s Day. As a result, you’ll have an extraordinary ability to attract the object of your desire and enjoy playing the game of love with someone special. Your first priority this Valentine’s Day will be the pursuit of pleasure, and because Mars is in soul mate-seeking Pisces, you’re not interested in the average one night stand. Nope, you want the fairy tale romance. Lucky you, Mars is moving towards a perfect trine with Saturn in your sign. This aspect will peak two days after Valentine’s Day, but you will certainly feel its effects now.  Your deepest romantic longing will have every chance to materialize. Love potion anyone?

Sagittarius (Nov. 22 – Dec. 21)

This Valentine’s Day, quite possibly more than most, you’ll get the distinct feeling that you need love. Not in a needy sort of way (that’s never your style), but rather in an “I want to be squeezed, cuddled and loved for ME” sort of way. Well, here’s the good news: Your wish is the Universe’s command. The Moon will be in your true love sector, making a brilliant link to both the Sun and Venus, now in your 3rd House of Communication. Expressing your feelings to the one you love should be quite natural, and you might feel the urge to write your sweetheart a letter that conveys exactly what your heart feels. Expect a declaration of love in return.

Capricorn (Dec. 22 – Jan. 19)

You’re in a deep process of personal metamorphosis, thanks to Pluto’s tour through your 1st House of Identity. When it comes to relationships, you might have already discarded old, outworn patterns in an effort to pursue the type of partnership that leaves room for personal growth. You’re learning that control isn’t an ingredient in a healthy relationship, and romance might not exactly be your first priority this Valentine’s Day. Whether you’re in a relationship or single, you’ll have an opportunity to convey your thoughts about love vs. unhealthy obsession to someone close. He or she is likely to benefit from your wisdom. So will you.

Aquarius (Jan. 20 – Feb. 18)

With the Sun and Venus in your sign, your magnetism is off the charts! This Valentine’s Day, your sweetheart will love you most for everything that sets you apart. Whether it’s the strange color you decide to dye your hair, the latest tattoo you get in the name of love, or just the unusual way you walk, you can expect plenty of verbal compliments from someone close. You might receive a love letter or poem from your Valentine and you can definitely expect to have a conversation with your mate that makes your heart beat a little faster!

Pisces (Feb. 19 – March 20)

Are you pining away on a secret crush? Is there an experience of unrequited love that threatens to ruin your Valentine’s Day happiness? Not to worry, even if this is true you’ll have an ability to focus on a higher love this year. You might choose to spend today doing something charitable to help someone in need. This might have to do with volunteering to spend the day at an elderly care facility celebrating Valentine’s Day with someone who might truly feel lonely now. Your compassion will make a difference. You know better than most that if you spread love, you gain love in return.

Feng Shui Tip for February 13th – ‘Eve of Valentine’s Day’

On this eve of Valentine’s Day it’s only appropriate that tonight’s energies center around dreaming of your sweetie. So here’s a time-tested way of finding out exactly who that sweetie might be. Pick a sprig of fresh rosemary and infuse it with the intention of finding out the name of your intended. Place the herb under your pillow and before slipping off to sleep think about seeing your love in your dreams. Whenever you wake be sure to recall the players who pepper your dream state and know that one of them is getting ready to spice up your love life. That name will come to you if you relax and let it. And then remember that a rose(mary) by any other name will smell just as sweet!

Single on Valentine’s Day? No Worries

Single on Valentine’s Day? No Worries

Celebrate yourself on this day of love

Sally Philips   Sally Philips on the topics of valentines day, love, astrology
Have you been dreading Valentine’s Day? Well, get over it! Cupid wants you to celebrate love in all of its manifestations, not just the romantic variety. As a single person, you have energy for loving friendships (which you might not have time for if you were part of a couple), so you have much to be grateful for.

Here are some tips for how each zodiac sign can use Valentine’s Day to affirm that a partner isn’t necessary when it comes to celebrating love — and a few suggestions for attracting a date as well!

Aries (March 21 – April 19)

If you’re single and loving it, more power to you … but if want to find a partner, try making this holiday your Valentine’s New Year. Write resolutions about new ways you can reach out while having fun in the coming year. Get psyched up and create a positive attitude. The world is your romantic oyster!

Taurus (April 20 – May 20)

You could use some pampering on this special day, so take yourself to a spa to enjoy a head-to-toe beauty treatment, massage or soak in a hot tub. Be your own best date by treating yourself to whatever sensual delights tickle your fancy. Invite a close friend along and indulge together.

Gemini (May 21 – June 20)

If you get the urge to call your friends and whine about your single status, go ahead. Get chatty and vent all you want … but whatever you do, resist the temptation to ring up your ex or that hottie you’ve got your eye on. Wait for another day to make those calls, when your emotions aren’t so volatile.

Cancer (June 21 – July 22)

You’re one of the world’s biggest romantics, so don’t let being single stop you from celebrating love. Arrange a gift or card exchange in your circle of friends and invite them over for a Valentine’s party. Bake cookies and deck out the house in red hearts and candlelight. Declare a toast to the loving friendships that sustain you.

Leo (July 23 – Aug. 22)

Okay, Leo, you may not have a date this year, but you can still spread some cheer. Offer to babysit your friends’ kids. Parents of young children often have trouble finding time for romance in their busy lives, so help them out. You won’t be alone, and you’ll have fun playing with their kiddos.

Virgo (Aug. 23 – Sept. 22)

This is going to sound crazy, but this might be the perfect day to clean and reorganize your space. De-cluttering improves Feng Shui, which creates chi (vital energy) that can help attract more magic into your life. If you’re looking for a relationship, enhance the southwest sector of your bedroom with gemstones, crystals and candles.

Libra (Sept. 23 – Oct. 22)

Being single isn’t easy for you, Libra. If you’re feeling sorry for yourself, here’s a sure-fire way to cheer up: help someone less fortunate than yourself. Seniors are often lonely, and not just on Valentine’s Day, so see if you can volunteer at a senior center in your neighborhood. Or, look for a church or non-profit group that could use your help.

Scorpio (Oct. 23 – Nov. 21)

You love intrigue and the little white lies behind it, so find an online florist and order a bouquet of flowers to be sent to you at your workplace. Or have a local candy store deliver a big box of chocolates. Sign the card “From Your Secret Admirer.” The water cooler gossip will keep you amused all day.

Sagittarius (Nov. 22 – Dec. 21)

Recharge your batteries by taking a short trip. It doesn’t have to be elaborate. Just getting on a bus and heading to some new part of town can do the trick. Or, try this with a friend: get in your car, start driving, toss a coin at every corner and turn left (for tails) or right (for heads) accordingly. After a few tosses, have dinner wherever you end up.

Capricorn (Dec. 22 – Jan. 19)

You’ve already got a handle on creating attractive energy that draws people to you. Your flair for success is irresistible. Now’s a great time to share some of the fruits of that success by treating your friends to a special event. Look for a movie, concert, comedy club or theater production you know they will enjoy.

Aquarius (Jan. 20 – Feb. 18)

Okay, so you’ve figured out that Valentine’s Day is a plot by flower shops and greeting card companies to bump up their post-Christmas sales. If you’re part of this “bah humbug” group, gather your like-minded friends and have a Valentine’s Scrooge party. Give a prize to the guest who brings the snarkiest card.

Pisces (Feb. 19 – March 20)

Today is the day to amplify the compassionate traits you are known and loved for. Reach out to a friend or family member who needs an open ear. As you listen, offer your support and help them find their way back to a more cosmic perspective. This comes naturally to you, but it isn’t always so easy for others.

Witchcraft 101: The Rhythmic Practice Phase (part 3)

Witchcraft 101: The Rhythmic Practice Phase (part 3)
Author: Wren

Since its inception, the Witches’ Voice, has been barraged with email asking the simple question… “How do I become a Witch”? Although, it has never been the mission of the Witches’ Voice to actually teach Witchcraft we find ourselves constantly shocked at the aweful responses the Teenage Witch or new seeker receives from many that “claim” themselves “elders” of the craft. For this we apologize. We will never preach or claim to “have the answer”.There are indeed many paths and many ways, it is our goal to give you the tools to  and what to look out for.

Part #3…

The Rhythmic Practice Phase

How are you doing so far?

The first two lessons should have taken you about six months of study and practice to complete(if you worked at it diligently). You should now also be fairly comfortable doing the basic ritual from the previous lesson. Remember that you actually have to DO the ritual – not just read it, dream about it or visualize it. Get up on your feet, get your tools together, light those candles AND DO IT!

“Effort requires that you either answer ‘yes’ or ‘no’.”

Teachers can always tell if someone who comes to them has done the work. The first time that a student will do a ritual or take part in one with others will clearly show his/her experience or lack of it.

If you have done the work, this does not mean that you will not be nervous your “first time out.” You will! But you will also be amazed at how quickly this nervousness will pass as the ritual progresses. Your spirit and inner child. (Him/her, again?) WILL remember all those practice sessions and soon you’ll be enjoying the whole thing immensely!

Along the way, DO Remember these four little things:

Life is always changing. Nothing stays the same.

To Know you have To Do. Experience requires action.

The quality of each experience – as you draw it forth and do it and live it – becomes the substance of your wisdom.

Yes, there will be a test on this. There is ALWAYS a test on this!

O.K., what’s next?

What lies behind us and what lies before us are tiny matters,
compared to what lies within us.” – Ralph Waldo Emerson

Rhythms of Nature, Rhythms of Life:

The Neo – Pagan Paths that we are discussing – including Wicca and Witchcraft – are called “Earth – based” religions. The rituals and practices follow the seasonal changes of the Earth. Some Paths use the eight holidays of the Wiccan Wheel of Life; some adhere to the more traditional Four Fire Festivals calendar. Some groups have come up with their own cycles according to their belief systems. What calendar will you use?

When you have decided which Holiday calendar that you want to incorporate into your life – lesson, read all that you can about it. Take one Holiday at a time. Look for resources, descriptions and Myths about each Holiday. Think upon each one as both a special event and as a “marker” for the year.

During the Rhythmic Stage, you will explore the year through the cycles of Nature. And yes, this phase DOES last an entire year. There is no other way. You may begin to reach out a bit more during this time – exploring new contacts, taking some classes, attending public events – but the personal exploration of the Rhythmic Cycle of The Holidays should be your primary focus.

Why? It is in this cycle that you will learn much more about yourself and your place in the Universe. Everything that is exists as vibrational energy. Some things have a higher frequency, some a lower one. You will learn to “feel” the vibrational changes around you as the seasons come and go.( An essential skill to have in Magick! )

Do you get a little “spring fever” around April or May? Look at the earth. She is excited about this time of year, too! Buds are swelling on the trees and flower plants are poking their first leaves out of the ground as if to ask, “Is it safe to come out yet”?

Do you feel particularly invigorated in the Fall crisp air? Watch the squirrels run around and dig into the ground to hide their nuts. Hear the bees as they bob from plant to plant racing down the coming frost. “Hurry, hurry, hurry,” seems to rustle the drying leaves from the trees. (I’m sure you get the idea.)

There Are Patterns

“I learn by going where I have to go.” – Theodore Roethke.

Most Pagans have a  or transmigration of the soul. All things in Nature are born (germination), grow, mature, reproduce, and then decline and die. The cycle begins again. This is why reincarnation makes sense to most Pagans. By observing the Rhythmic Cycle, we reflect on this process and we may come to think that it just “seems right”. Not too surprising really. It’s “natural,” isn’t it?

You have a place in this cycle. You probably were not brought up to think in this way. Most aspiring Neo – Pagans weren’t. This year of study will show you not only where you fit into the cycle of Nature, but how your active involvement in these cycles can change your life. When you come to understand and work with the natural rhythms in the world around you, you will understand what it means to be Pagan.

Here are some reasons why “rhythmic learning” – and possibly reincarnation – works:

Effective experiential learning will affect the learner’s cognitive structures (action theories), attitudes and values, perceptions and behavioral patterns.

People will believe more in knowledge they have discovered themselves than in knowledge presented by others.

Learning is more effective when it is an active rather than a passive process.

Acceptance of new action theories, attitudes, and behavioral patterns cannot be brought about by a piecemeal approach.

It takes more than information to change action theories, attitudes, and behavioral patterns.

It takes more than firsthand experience to generate valid knowledge. Besides experience, there needs to be a theoretical system that the experiencer tests out and a personal reflection on the meaning of the experience.

(The above principles come from the work of Kurt Lewin, one of the important founding fathers of social psychology who influenced the development of the Group Dynamics movement in the early 1940’s.)

I’d add a seventh point – Make It Fun!

Hunt down seasonal objects for your altar. Think about colors for cloths and robes. Make a headpiece for each Holiday. Pick a mythic story and follow it throughout the year. Act it out! Dress the part! Dance! Sing! Write a poem! Cook up a recipe! Adopt a “totem” animal for each season. Make a special storage box for each Holiday’s special decorations. (Every Holiday will feel like Yule as you open your Holiday boxes next year. Add more goodies!)

A man of faithful thought may feel in light, among the beasts and fields,
the turning of the wheel.” – Wendell Berry

WHY Are You Doing All This?

Transformation!

Transformation begins from within. Many people turn to a religion – or to magic! – in an attempt to change the things that they perceive to stand in the way of their ‘true happiness.” Many a love spell has been cast more to ease one person’s own inner loneliness than as a real desire for an equal relationship with the object of their current “affections.”

Inner transformational work is difficult, messy and anything but instantaneous. This explains the current nervous searching out of “just the right spell” by many a new seeker to the Craft. Hoping to somehow by – pass the true work involved in developing a magickal way of life, they hope for something in the order of a Hollywood special effect. “Just say the magic words…” and your insecurity problems, heartaches and financial worries are over! Uh – uh…it just doesn’t work like that. Sorry, Mr. Spielberg….

As you work through the year of The Wheel, you will learn a lot about yourself.

Such as:

Respect – Both for the interconnection of all Life and for yourself.

Thought – How you can change your life by changing your thoughts.

Examination – Looking within yourself for answers and solutions.

Release – Letting go of old habits and emotions that no longer work.

Synthesis – How an individual can also be part of a whole.

Creativity – Trusting your intuition to help you make viable choices.

Action – Learning how to act rather than re – act.

Love – Being able to give and receive healthy love.

Strength – Inner courage to overcome circumstances without harm.

Transformation! – The realization that only you can change what is not working in your life. Only you can make your life what you want it to be. And only you – through difficult, messy and lengthy work – can make your magickal Life one of Love, Light and Power!

The outstanding error of learners, in whom it is excusable, and of many teachers,
who teach without wisdom is that they associate Occultism with practices
rather than with PRACTICE. I teach the LIFE of concentration and meditation…”

If Our Pets Made Our New Year’s Resolutions

If Our Pets Made Our New Year’s Resolutions

While people have been making their own new year’s resolutions, I decided to  let my dogs, Sanchez and Gina, make mine for me. Here’s what they had to say:

  • Take more walks (with us)
  • Spend more time at the piano (We love sleeping under it while you  play.)
  • Take more breaks from the computer
  • Remember to play (especially with us)
  • Make  more dog treats for us
  • Brag  about us every day
  • Perform more concerts for dogs
  • Be patient with me in my senior years (from Sanchez). I’m giving you an opportunity  to slow down and remember that every moment in life is a gift.
  • More agility training PLEASE (from Gina)
  • Help more homeless dogs

If your pets made your new year’s resolutions, what would they say?

Firsts for the New Year Spell

Firsts for the New Year Spell

The Japanese have a wonderful custom of honoring the New Year’s “firsts,” which they call hatsu. Among the  first activities they note on this day are the first day of work, the first visit to temple and the first practice session for artists. You should note your  “firsts” this year, and practice kakizome or the act of “first writing.” To do so, choose your favorite poem, prayer, or passage of  writing. Copy the passage in your best handwriting on to a sheet of the best and whitest paper you can find. The paper sybolizes the pure New Year, a time  when much is possible. This practice serves as a good luck charm for a year begun in beauty. And a year begun well, ends well.

Astrology Inspired New Year Resolutions

Astrology Inspired New Year Resolutions

Keep your New Year Resolutions with help from the stars

Sally Philips  by Sally Philips on the topics of new year, astrology

It’s that time of year again, when we all promise to correct our bad habits and become perfect people. Riiiiight! As we all know, New Year resolutions are made to be broken … but that doesn’t mean we shouldn’t make them.

Whether we stick to them is not always the point. It’s more about adjusting our focus each year to gain greater awareness. Little by little, that awareness can help us clean up our mucky areas and get closer to living the lives we desire.

Aries (March 21 – April 19)

If one of your resolutions last year was to finish projects that are still sitting on your shelf, it’s time to box them up and make room for a brand new endeavor. Here’s the resolution you will need to make it a success: I won’t start a new project until I finish the one I’m working on.

Taurus (April 20 – May 20)

Your fixed energy makes you great at follow through, but it can also keep you stuck in bad habits. Resolve to tackle a few of your worst ones this year. If you are true to your resolutions for just three months, you will be well on your way to breaking even the most stubborn habit.

Gemini (May 21 – June 20)

Your whirlwind life can be a lot of fun — and it certainly isn’t boring — but it might serve you well to slow down this coming year. Even though patience isn’t your strong suit, try adding a dash of it here and there. It will help you make progress in areas where your bouncy energy has actually been holding you back.

Cancer (June 21 – July 22)

You love your routines and your security, but it’s time to get out of your comfort zone and try something new. Resolve to reach out into unknown territory and see what you find this year. If it feels scary, remember that you’re just coming up on an edge where you need to stretch.

Leo (July 23 – Aug. 22)

Have you used your irresistible charms to capture emotional prisoners this past year? If you’re a player — and you know who you are — resolve to be more devoted this year. Open up that big heart of yours and take your relationships to a deeper level.

Virgo (Aug. 23 – Sept. 22)

Nag, nag, nag … the only time you stop is when you’re nitpicking. Okay, that’s a huge exaggeration … but chances are you’ve gotten on someone’s case a little too often this past year. Resolve to lighten up this year and let others take care of dotting the i’s and crossing the t’s.

Libra (Sept. 23 – Oct. 22)

As hard as you try, you can’t have it both ways. Promise yourself you will make firmer decisions this coming year. You can still weigh all of your alternatives, but when it comes down to the line, make up your mind and stick to it. Your friends and colleagues will breathe a sigh of relief.

Scorpio (Oct. 23 – Nov. 21)

Keeping secrets adds to your mysterious allure, but there’s a limit. If you’re using your power to manipulate others, that’s where it needs to end. Resolve to be more transparent with those close to you this year. Let them in on your deepest secrets and enjoy the fruits of greater intimacy.

Sagittarius (Nov. 22 – Dec. 21)

You’re good at thinking big and you shouldn’t change that this year … but you might want to put more time into developing strategies that will help you reach your lofty goals. Remember — a goal without a plan is just a dream — so make this the year you follow through.

Capricorn (Dec. 22 – Jan. 19)

Here’s your mantra-resolution: It’s not all about money. Keep pursuing the almighty dollar if you like, but also take time to smell the roses that line your path to success. Your friends and family need you. Resolve to be more generous with your time and attention.

Aquarius (Jan. 20 – Feb. 18)

Even though we all love your quirkiness, it wouldn’t hurt to develop a bit more tolerance for the traditional. As it’s the flip side of where you usually put your energy, it may feel uncomfortable. But you shine when it comes to breaking the mold, so surprise everyone (again!) with a side of you they’ve never seen.

Pisces (Feb. 19 – March 20)

This is the year to put your compassion to better use. Resolve to find a project where you can help others in need. Your understanding and supportive nature is a gift you need to give on a regular basis. Reach out and extend it beyond your friends and family.

Wishing You A Very Blessed & Prosperous 2013, Dear Family & Friends!

Good Morning & Happy New Year, family & friends! it is totally unreal how times flies, isn’t it?  Go to bed one night, it is 2012. Wake up the next day, it’s 2013? Makes you wonder how many other lives have you woke up and done the same thing? I was thinking about when all the other Religions were calling for the end of the world. I had lots of humorous thoughts about it. Of course, the mainstream Religious leaders wouldn’t have thought it funny. Go ahead, let the end of the world come. When it is all said and done, “The Pagans shall inherit the Land.” I know you are scratching you head but we reincarnate, see, lol! We would all reincarnate and come back and the world would be ours! Good grief, I sound like a crazy ass witch, sorry about that. My husband got to watching one of preachers on TV (just to make fun of him), he would sit and argue with the man. Then the preacher got on the end of the world. He blew that up so big. And of course, for only $2500 he would send you a survival generator. They were going to need one. Then they would need protection from all us heathens. He recommended all the men learn how to shoot and the women do the same, also take a self defense course. Heathens must be bad folk 🙂 ! But my husband said the man was going to retreat to his underground bunker on the day of the 20th.  Hubby tuned in and sure enough the nut case was gone. And they were telling everybody where Brother what’s-his=face went! Can you imagine that? If I was that man I would never show my face in public again, NEV ER!

You might be wondering why I brought that up. Well our local TV station was asking for what we thought was the best story of the year. I thought that would make the cut but it didn’t. Just goes to show our local station has no taste, lol! Anyway, today is going to be a very laid back day. No, I am not hung over, I don’t touch the stuff. I just stayed up late last night changing the graphics here. I also had to do some shopping for new books of 2013. So I slept in the morning.

I noticed the population button today. I guess the biggest part of our bunch had to work today. Ahhhh, but the world must continue to turn. Remember it is a very laid back day so no telling what might happen, lol!

Wishing You & Yours a Very Prosperous & Blessed 2013,

Love,

Lady A

Your Daily Feng Shui For December 31st – ‘Lore for New Year’s Eve’

Let’s ring in the best New Year ever! That’s right, why not make it hot in the old town tonight? You can do exactly that if you burn seven candles anytime after sunset. These candles will bring unlimited amounts of fortune and luck on this night and the next 365 to follow, especially if that intention is attached. Or, a few minutes before the clock strikes twelve, open every door and window in the house and allow the old and stale to exit and be replaced by the fresh and fabulous. Throw some cash into the house while standing immediately outside the entryway door and you can expect more of the same as the year unfolds. If at midnight you wash your face with pure spring or rainwater and look into a mirror by candlelight that mirror will declare you the fairest of them all for all of the next year! Finally, make sure that the very first words that anyone speaks to you in this New Year are symbolic or representative of how you want your year to be. Happy New Year will do it, but happy, healthy, loving and prosperous New Year says it even better. That’s my New Year’s wish for you, from my house to yours!
