Moon Alert

Avoid shopping or making important decisions from 6:45 AM to 3:30 PM EST today (3:45 AM to 12:30 PM PST). After that, the Moon moves from Gemini into Cancer.

Aries (March 21-April 19)

After the Moon Alert today, you will love to cocoon at home and relax among familiar surroundings. Prior to this, make no promises. Don’t volunteer for anything. Resist the urge to shop for anything other than food or gas.

Taurus (April 20-May 20)

During the Moon Alert today, avoid important financial decisions or spending money. (Except for food or gas.) Afterwards, you will be keen to talk to others and pull loose ends together; or take a short trip and learn something new.

Gemini (May 21-June 20)

This is a tricky day because from 6:45 AM to 3:30 PM EST today (3:45 AM to 12:30 PM PST), there is a Moon Alert, which means this is a poor time to make important decisions or spend money on anything other than food or gas. Be aware of this.

Cancer (June 21-July 22)

When the Moon Alert is over, the Moon will move into your sign, which will give you a slight advantage over all the other signs. However, it will also make you more emotional. You can use this to your advantage by asking for what you want.

Leo (July 23-Aug. 22)

After the Moon Alert is over today, enjoy socializing with friends and groups. But during the time of the Moon Alert, postpone important decisions and expenditures. Wait until 3:30 PM EST (12:30 PM PST) to act freely!

Virgo (Aug. 23-Sept. 22)

Time spent with friends and groups will be easy going and friendly today. However, during the Moon Alert, avoid important decisions. Explore ideas about goals for the future but don’t commit to anything until 3:30 PM EST (12:30 PM PST).

Libra (Sept. 23-Oct. 22)

Today there is a Moon Alert taking place at the top of your chart, which is why it’s important not to volunteer for anything or agree to anything when talking to bosses, parents, teachers or authority figures. Wait until 3:30 PM EST (12:30 PM PST) to act.

Scorpio (Oct. 23-Nov. 21)

During the Moon Alert today, which will take place for about 9 hours (a big chunk of the day), it’s a poor time to make important decisions, especially financial ones about inheritances or shared property. It’s also a poor time to shop for anything other than food or gas. Be aware of this. (See above.)

Sagittarius (Nov. 22-Dec. 21)

In some ways, it will be best to cooperate with others today, especially partners and close friends. Nevertheless, during the Moon Alert, you don’t want to agree to anything important. You might regret this later. Therefore, stay on your toes. Be diplomatic and be careful.

Capricorn (Dec. 22-Jan. 19)

This is a dicey day at work because until 3:30 PM EST (12:30 PM PST), there is a Moon Alert, which can make things quite loosey-goosey. This is also a poor time for agreements and important decisions. Be aware of this and wait until this window of time is over to commit to anything important.

Aquarius (Jan. 20-Feb. 18)

This is a creative day for you because your mind is freewheeling and willing to think outside of the box. In fact, write down your creative ideas for later consideration. This is also a lovely social, fun-loving day. Enjoy good times with children.

Pisces (Feb. 19-March 20)

After the Moon Alert is over today, which is 3:30 PM EST (12:30 PM PST), you will feel playful and eager to socialize! Make plans to socialize with friends. This will also be an excellent time to enjoy the arts, sport events and romantic adventures.

If Your Birthday Is Today

Actress Julia Garner (1994) shares your birthday today. You are an optimist with a strong spirit. You have a firm sense of morals and value justice. (With a rebellious streak.) This year is a time of new beginnings, adventures and major changes in your life. Keep your eyes open for new opportunities because it’s time to take action, initiative and define your goals.

February 1, 2023 Moon Goddess Current Phase

You can use this link to go forward or backward in time for Moon phase information. If you are curious, you can even find out what phase the Moon was in when you or anyone else was born.

From MoonGiant.com

The Moon’s current phase for today and tonight is a Waxing Gibbous phase. Visible through most of the night sky setting a few hours before sunrise. This phase is when the moon is more than 50% illuminated but not yet a Full Moon. The phase lasts about 7 days with the moon becoming more illuminated each day until the Full Moon. During a Waxing Gibbous the moon rises in the east in mid-afternoon and is high in the eastern sky at sunset. The word Gibbous first appeared in the 14th century and has its roots in the Latin word “gibbosus” meaning humpbacked.

Visit the February 2023 Moon Phases Calendar to see all the daily moon phase for this month.

Today’s Waxing Gibbous Phase

The Waxing Gibbous on February 1 has an illumination of 84%. This is the percentage of the Moon illuminated by the Sun. The illumination is constantly changing and can vary up to 10% a day. On February 1 the Moon is 10.95 days old. This refers to how many days it has been since the last New Moon. It takes 29.53 days for the Moon to orbit the Earth and go through the lunar cycle of all 8 Moon phases.

February 2023 Moon Details

You can use this link to go forward or backward in time for Moon phase information. If you are curious, you can even find out what phase the Moon was in when you or anyone else was born.

From MoonGiant.com

The Full Moon for this month will occur early in the month on Sunday, February 5th. The New Moon will happen later in February on Monday, February 20th.

February’s Full Moon

As the snowiest month in the United States, February’s full moon is commonly known as the Full Snow Moon in Native American cultures. These ancient tribes named this moon after the way trees cracked in the cold, or how people had to sit shoulder to shoulder around the fire for warmth. Even the Celts called it the Moon of Ice. As expected of the coldest month in the year, the Full Snow Moon is also known by more sinister names, such as the Bone Moon.

The Cherokee tribe called February’s full moon the Bone Moon because by this point, the tribe’s winter food supplies had usually dwindled to the point where people had to gnaw on bones and cook bone marrow soup in order to survive. For the same reason, the Kalapuya tribe called this moon the Out of Food Moon. Appropriately, it’s also known as the Hunger Moon and the Little Famine Moon. Perhaps due to this month’s association with death, the Cherokee tribe would commune with their dead ancestors during the Bone Moon. A didanawiskawi, or a medicine person, would host a medicine dance for the community. Fasting and rituals for the dead were also common practices.

However, not all cultures associate February’s full moon with extreme cold and death. The Hopi tribe calls it the Moon of Purification and Renewal, which is very fitting because the Full Snow Moon is usually the very first full moon of the year according to the lunar calendar. Cultures that follow the lunar calendar, especially East Asian cultures, tend to associate the Full Snow Moon with new beginnings for this very reason. The ancient Chinese, for example, called it the Budding Moon.

As a matter of fact, celebrations of February’s full moon are the climax of Lunar New Year festivities in various East Asian countries. In China, the Full Snow Moon is celebrated during the Lantern Festival, also known as the Yuanxiao Festival, which is the 15th day of the Lunar New Year. During this festival, the Chinese release kongming lanterns into the sky as they admire the full moon and eat tangyuan, glutinous rice balls that are usually filled with sweet paste. The round shape of the balls symbolize family togetherness and bring good luck to the whole family.

Many East Asian cultures in general also light lanterns and bonfires to celebrate February’s full moon. According to an ancient Chinese legend, not long after Buddhism was brought into China, 17 deities were witnessed flying through the sky during the first full moon of the Lunar New Year. Shocked and excited, the populace lit fires and lanterns to see the godly beings better. They continued to do so year after year, but for more practical reasons – to chase away pests and to pray for a good crop in the upcoming spring.

In Korea, where February’s full moon is known as Daeboreum, these fiery structures are called “Houses of the Burning Moon”. During Daeboreum, Koreans hike mountains despite the freezing temperatures in order to catch a glimpse of the first rise of the first full moon of the Lunar New Year. According to legend, the very first person to accomplish this feat will have their dearest wish come true.

February 2023 – Gardening by the Moon, Biodynamic Planting Guide

Please read this first:

1) Moon Phase x Moon Zodiac Sign:

Please keep in mind, that Gardening by Moon Phase and Gardening by Moon Zodiac Sign are two different/independent biodynamic systems and they might give you different or contradictiory gardening recommendations.

  • a) Each Moon Phase (except Full Moon and New Moon) lasts about 1 week
  • b) Each Moon Zodiac Sign lasts about 2.5 days

Try to experiment with these two systems to find which recommendations suits you the most.

2) Tropical (Astrological) x Sidereal (Astronomical) Zodiac:
(1-2 days difference in Leaf, Fruit, Root and Flower days)

There are two different zodiacs for determining the Moon Sign:

  • a) Tropical zodiac (Astrological) is based on the seasons – Vernal Equinox is fixed as 0° Aries (The 1st Fruit day)
  • b) Sidereal zodiac (Astronomical) takes into account Precession of Equinoxes and shifts 0° Aries back by cca 1-2 days. Maria Thun who was an authority on biodynamics was using this Sidereal zodiac

Try to experiment also with these two zodiac systems to find which system suits you better.

What Planets Are Retrograde In February 2023?

From elitedaily.com

If you made it through January’s retrogrades without sending a hasty message to an old flame, you have me beat. But looking ahead to February’s planetary retrogrades, a celebration is in order: Starting off the year with Mercury, Mars, and Uranus all retrograding through the sky was no easy feat, and the entire month probably felt like one giant blur. Fortunately, February’s astrology is looking much less eventful. If you’re wondering what planets are retrograde this month, you’ll definitely be pleased with the answer.

Let’s start by backing up: In the first month of the year, Mercury, the planet of communication, was retrograde in the cardinalearth sign of Capricorn up until Jan. 18. However, even when Mercury stations direct, it doesn’t mark the end of retrograde mishaps. Commonly referred to as the “shadow phase,” the two weeks or so after a retrograde officially ends often sees delays regarding travel, receiving and dispersing messages and information, and communicating effectively as Mercury was gradually picks up speed in the sky. The good thing is, February 1 marks the end of the post-shadow phase for Mercury, restoring clear and effective communication (for now).

Also in January, Mars, the planet of action, exuberance, and conflict continued its retrograde through the mutableair sign of Gemini that initially began back on Oct. 30. While the retrograde technically ended on Jan. 12, Mars didn’t begin to gradually pick up speed again until the very end of January, due to — again — the post-shadow phase. Now that Mars is accelerating through the cosmos again, everyone will feel a surge in energy, especially when it comes to sharing ideas, multi-tasking, and engage in verbal discourse.

Uranus, the planet of sudden disruptive change and upheaval also stationed direct in the fixedearth sign of Taurus on Jan. 22, but since Uranus is an outer planet, its direct station is much less noticeable. The inner planets, however, such as Mercury and Mars, are now soaring through the cosmos, ready to tackle any obstacle that stands in their way.

What Is A Retrograde?

A retrograde occurs when a planet’s speed decreases due to proximity to the sun: From our view here on Earth, it appears that the planet is moving backward, but in reality, it’s just moving slower than normal. The slow movement of the planet that’s retrograding is what causes challenging events, specifically based around that planet’s significations. For example, when Mercury (planet of communication) stations retrograde, issues communicating, obtaining, or sharing information can be a challenge. However, when an outer planet like Neptune or Uranus stations retrograde, the effects aren’t typically as noticeable, since these planets are further away from the sun and from Earth. The outer planets also don’t rule over any of the signs or houses, so their mishaps tend to feel a lot less personal.

What Planets Will Be Retrograde February 2023?

The short answer is, well, zero! February is the first month since April 2022 that there have been no planets retrograding through the cosmos, which is music to my ears. Retrogrades cause things to drastically slow down, stop, and even reverse in some cases. It’s a time to review, revise, and plan for the future, but not an ideal time to get any new balls rolling. Since none of the inner or outer planets will be retrograde this month, however, it’s an ideal time to take action. If you’ve been waiting on the right time to initiate a new idea or endeavor, now is the perfect moment. Without any retrogrades holding your plans back, you’re bound to see swift progress — just be sure to take it one step at a time: Planets fresh out of their retrograde cycles, such as Mars, tend to charge full speed ahead. The good thing is, with the new year now fully underway, you likely have a thriving list of goals and ambitions to direct any excess energy to.

We won’t have another planet station retrograde until April 21, when Mercury retraces its steps through the fixed, earth sign of Taurus, so be sure to enjoy the calmness of the cosmos until then.

February is Black History Month in the United States

(Side Note From Lady Beltane – I believe it is important to honor the men and women whose sweat, bad backs, ectara who helped build the USA into the country it is today. Most if not all of the “Founding Fathers” owned slaves. Many of them fathered children with the women and it was usually not by the woman’s choice that she had to lay with her owner. When you think about it is it fair for any person anywhere in the world today to be owned by another person?)

Black History Month is an annual celebration of achievements by African Americans and a time for recognizing their central role in U.S. history. Also known as African American History Month, the event grew out of “Negro History Week,” the brainchild of noted historian Carter G. Woodson and other prominent African Americans. Since 1976, every U.S. president has officially designated the month of February as Black History Month. Other countries around the world, including Canada and the United Kingdom, also devote a month to celebrating Black history.

The story of Black History Month begins in 1915, half a century after the Thirteenth Amendment abolished slavery in the United States.

That September, the Harvard-trained historian Carter G. Woodson and the prominent minister Jesse E. Moorland founded the Association for the Study of Negro Life and History (ASNLH), an organization dedicated to researching and promoting achievements by Black Americans and other peoples of African descent.

Some of the Magickal Applications for Wednesday c. 2019

Magickal Applications for Wednesday

To the Romans, this day was called Dies Mercurii, or “Mercury’s day” Mercury was a popular character in the Roman pantheon. A messenger of the gods, he presided over commerce, trade, and anything that required skill or dexterity. The Celts also worshiped Mercury and eventually equated him with the Norse god Odin (some spelling variations on this name include Wotan, Wodin, and Wodan). In Norse mythologies, Odin, like Mercury, is associated with poetry and music. Interestingly enough, both Odin and Mercury were regarded as psychopomps, or the leaders of souls, in their individual mythologies.

Odin, one of the main gods in Norse mythology, was constantly seeking wisdom. He traveled the world in disguise as a one-eyed man with a long gray beard, wearing an old, beat-up hat and carrying a staff or a spear (which brings to my mind images of Gandalf from The Lord of the Rings). In the Old English language, this day of Mercury evolved into Wodnes daeg, “Woden’s day,” or Wednesday.

Wednesday carries all of the planetary and magickal energies and associations of the witty and nimble god Mercury himself. Some of these mercurial traits included good communication skills, cleverness, intelligence, creativity, business sense, writing, artistic talent, trickiness, and thievery. And don’t forget all of those wise and enigmatic qualities associated with the Norse god Odin/Wodin, not to mention the goddess Athena’s contributions of music, the arts, handmade crafts, and writing. Wednesdays afford excellent opportunities for seeking wisdom, changing your circumstances, and improving your skills, be they in trade and commerce, music and art, or in communication and writing.

C. 2019 A Though for Today – The Witch Said What?!

No Imbolc/Lammas Issue of Life in The Craft Magazine and Other Things Explained

There will be no Imbolc/Lammas issue of Life in The Craft magazine this turning of the Wheel of the Year as it would contain my chaotic energy. Plus, I just have not felt up to being able to even edit last year’s issue to send out.

You may have missed the posts explaining what has been going on in my life since January 1, 2023 so let me give you the highlights.

January 3rd, my third oldest grandson left for active duty in the USA Army. His first two weeks in Basic Combat Training were really rough and I was helping my daughter, his mom adjust to her younger son being unreachable most of the time besides me trying to get use to it. I am happy to say that as of the end of last week he, my daughter, and myself have almost adjusted to a new normal.

January 7th, we welcomed my 10th grandchild into the family. An hour after his birth he had to be put on oxygen and have a feeding tube inserted. Here I was helping my middle son and his wife cope with having a baby in the NICU. I was very worried for my grandson as well. I am happy to say he came home to meet his big brother on January 13, 2023.

January 13rd My daughter whose son just enter the Army earlier in the month had one of her and her fiancée cats get sick overnight. The vet ran tests and found he had a lymph node type cancer. He came home from the animal hospital only to enter eternal sleep on January 23rd.

January 18th The latest thing to upset the family was my youngest son’s constant canine companion of 11 years hurt his leg get up from under the kitchen table. The leg appeared only to be sprained so he was treating him for this at home. By January 27 his leg was swollen with sores on it. Into the vet we go to find out Kage had a very sever break in his femur to the point even if he had taken him to the vet the day it happened it would have cost thousands of dollars to try to have it fixed. Kage had devolved an septic infection, an infect that is in the bloodstream. My son made the hardest decision of his life to have his beloved companion put into eternal rest. I was very close to Kage also and had known him just as long as my son had. I also would dog sit if my son went away for a couple of days. This death was so totally unexpected that I am still having a hard time dealing with my feelings over it. Like crying as I type this.

All of this extra stress and silly weather put into the worse fibromyalgia I have ever experienced and am still trying to get it to calm down. It also, brought me nightmares, lower immunity leading to a cold I am trying to get rid of. I have had super highs, my grandson coming home very healthy, to deep lows, Kage’s death and every emotion in between. This is why I took days off here and there through January from all things connected to WoTC. I literally forced myself to start working again this last Sunday. I also contribute my wanting to honor Lady Abyss’ memory by reposting some of her things this week as a way to live up to me telling her I would carry on the Goddess’ work on this website when I took over in May of 2019. I will do what I can daily or let you know why I am not posting on any given day.

Thank you all for your support, understanding, beautiful words in comment and emails.

c. 2018 A Laugh for Today – In Regards to Dealing With People………The Witch Said What?

Some of the Witchcraft/Magickal Correspondence – Wednesday’s Witchery c. 2019

Wednesday’s Witchery

Be bold and daring today! Expand your knowledge of the Craft by working with the planetary energies of Mercury on this multifaceted day of the week. Consider the Greco-Roman gods Mercury and Hermes and all of the many lessons they have for you. Embrace change and movement, and work on your communication techniques. Conjure up a little good luck for yourself with that Mercury dime spell. Call on Athena to inspire you to try magickal arts and crafts and to be more creative in your own spellwork and witchery.

Meditate on Odin and see what you can discover about him. I wonder what sort of fabulous and fascinating magickal wisdom you will uncover? Odin is a shaman, after all; he may appear in many guises and faces. I guarantee that he will make you laugh at yourself before he is through with you, but you will learn. It’s up to you what you do with that knowledge. Will you let it shapeshift into wisdom?

Wednesday is the wild and wily day of the week, so try to go with the flow; don’t fight the quirky energies of the day. Most importantly, follow your heart, and always keep a good sense of humor, because of Wednesdays you will really need it.

Moon Alert

There are no restrictions to shopping or important decisions today. The Moon is in Gemini.

Aries (March 21-April 19)

Today you have an emotional investment in your communications with others, which is why you want to get right down to the nitty-gritty. You want to talk about things that matter. You’ll be bored with superficial chitchat about the weather. Note: You might learn something today from a female companion.

Taurus (April 20-May 20)

Today you have a strong attachment to the things that you own, which is why you might want to hold on to things and not lend them to anyone. You might also find yourself defending yourself in an area that seems to be hardly worth talking about.

Gemini (May 21-June 20)

Today you have a strong need to belong and relate to your friends and loved ones. This is why you will be sensitive to the feelings and moods of people around you. On the upside, your luck is slightly better today, which means things will tend to go your way.

Cancer (June 21-July 22)

It’s totally appropriate if you feel tempted to withdraw and keep to yourself today because that’s just what’s happening. Possibly, you will communicate some deep inner feelings to someone else. Enjoy your solitude. This is also a good day for mystical or spiritual disciplines.

Leo (July 23-Aug. 22)

Your emotional contact with friends is important to you today, which is why you might find that you feel more protective and supportive of someone. Possibly, the flip of this will occur, and you will attract someone to you who needs emotional support? Could go either way.

Virgo (Aug. 23-Sept. 22)

You might want to reach out and help someone today, possible at the risk of blurring the distinction between a professional and personal relationship. If you work with a group, you will be more sensitive and responsive to their general mood.

Libra (Sept. 23-Oct. 22)

Today you feel a strong urge to get away from your daily routine and go off somewhere and do something different and stimulating. Of course, there is more than one way to “get away”. You might escape through books, film or conversation with someone. You might meet a new friend from a foreign country

Scorpio (Oct. 23-Nov. 21)

It’s easy to feel possessive about the property of someone else today because you want something that belongs to them. As a result, you might attract someone to you who is intense and powerful. Avoid disputes about shared responsibilities and shared property.

Sagittarius (Nov. 22-Dec. 21)

Partners, spouses and close friends are more important today than usual. Likewise, conflicts with others will be more emotional. Be smart and guard against knee-jerk reactions to situations that might be based on pent-up feelings within you. Easy does it.

Capricorn (Dec. 22-Jan. 19)

Today you will have to put your own emotional considerations second to those of someone else. You might have to help someone or do a service for someone. You’re not playing a martyr game. This is just what’s happening. Accept it and do what you can.

Aquarius (Jan. 20-Feb. 18)

It will be hard for you to conceal your feelings from others today. You need to be yourself now and feel what you really are. Some of you are wearing your heart on your sleeve, which is why romance will have greater emotional depth today. (Your head is spinning.)

Pisces (Feb. 19-March 20)

It will please you to retire by yourself to where you live today to take time and do some navel gazing. It’s a good time to be by yourself to look at your attitudes, feelings and emotional orientation to the world around you. Observe your habits, and how they control you.

If Your Birthday Is Today

Baseball Hall of Famer Jackie Robinson (1919-1972) shares your birthday today. You are a combination of creativity and logic. You are mentally alert and ambitious. You give your all to something that is important. This year is a lovely social year! You will enjoy life more, especially your relationships. It’s time to let your guard down and loosen up!
