When the assertive is able to defer to the receptive, and when the receptive accepts responsibility and exercises quiet leadership, an exciting and profitable union is the result. This brings good fortune, for all success depends upon the magnetic effect of mutual attraction.

Consistency is important in matters of mutual attraction, for this is what separates courtship from seduction.

The Aquarius Moon opposes the Leo Sun on Saturday to create the Full Moon. Normally, this face-off between the two biggest bodies in the sky heightens emotions and can lead to breakdowns and breakthroughs. Alliances that have grown stale and stagnant will be challenged by sudden cravings for independence. The taste of freedom can become so desirable that it might even threaten to separate those who are totally committed to one another. But this emotional space is only meant to provide some breathing room so that we feel like we’re making real choices of our own free will instead of simply doing things out of habit or obligation. Fresh forms of fun help us discover unusual ways to share love with our partners or make it easier to connect with someone new.

Saint of the Day for August 11th is St. Mary Magdelene

St. Mary Magdelene
“The Penitent”

She is called “the Penitent”. St. Mary was given the name ‘Magdalen’ because, though a Jewish girl, she lived in a Gentile town called Magdale, in northern Galilee, and her culture and manners were those of a Gentile. St. Luke records that she was a notorious sinner, and had seven devils removed from her. She was present at Our Lords’ Crucifixion, and with Joanna and Mary, the mother of James and Salome, at Jesus’ empty tomb. Fourteen years after Our Lord’s death, St. Mary was put in a boat by the Jews without sails or oars – along with Sts. Lazarus and Martha, St. Maximin (who baptized her), St. Sidonius (“the man born blind”), her maid Sera, and the body of St. Anne, the mother of the Blessed Virgin. They were sent drifting out to sea and landed on the shores of Southern France, where St. Mary spent the rest of her life as a contemplative in a cave known as Sainte-Baume. She was given the Holy Eucharist daily by angels as her only food, and died when she was 72. St. Mary was transported miraculously, just before she died, to the chapel of St. Maximin, where she received the last sacraments.

More about this saint: St. Mary Magdalen (Feast day – July 22) Mary Magdalen was well known as a sinner when she first saw Our Lord. She was very beautiful and very proud, but after she met Jesus, she felt great sorrow for her evil life. When Jesus went to supper at the home of a rich man named Simon, Mary came to weep at His feet. Then with her long beautiful hair, she wiped His feet dry and anointed them with expensive perfume. Some people were surprised that Jesus let such a sinner touch Him, but Our Lord could see into Mary’s heart, and He said: “Many sins are forgiven her, because she has loved very much.” Then to Mary He said kindly, “Your faith has made you safe; go in peace.” From then on, with the other holy women, Mary humbly served Jesus and His Apostles. When Our Lord was crucified, she was there at the foot of His cross, unafraid for herself, and thinking only of His sufferings. No wonder Jesus said of her: “She has loved much.” After Jesus’ body had been placed in the tomb, Mary went to anoint it with spices early Easter Sunday morning. Not finding the Sacred Body, she began to weep, and seeing someone whom she thought was the gardener, she asked him if he knew where the Body of her beloved Master had been taken. But then the person spoke in a voice she knew so well: “Mary!” It was Jesus, risen from the dead! He had chosen to show Himself first to Mary Magdalen, the repentent sinner.

Beautiful daughter of INACHUS and yet another object of ZEUS’s affections.

HERA had her suspicions when she saw this white heifer on a hill with a white cloud hovering over it whenever ZEUS went missing…

“ZEUS dear, I haven’t had a pressie from you for yonks,” she wheedled at the breakfast table.

“Anything you desire, dearest,” he smirked, “It’s yours.”

“Well now, there’s a lovely white heifer over on a yonder hill that would go so well with my prize herd…”

She saw ZEUS grow pale and his eyes cloud over. “I.. er, I er… Oh, yes of course darling.”

HERA employed ARGUS, her heavy, to act as a minder while ZEUS just had time to advise IO not to panic. “Hold on,” he whispered, “Somehow I’ll rescue you. I’ll get HERMES to do a little rustling.”

They nearly got away with it, but before ZEUS could get IO’s halter off, HERA sent a gadfly to sting the poor young cow to the point of madness. Bellowing with pain, she ran off with the fly in never-ending pursuit.

IO ran in every which direction to dodge her tormentor — over the hills and far away, up and down, in and over. She even passed PROMETHEUS chained to his rock on Mount Caucasus, who managed to shout as much encouragement as he could in the circumstances.

There came a time when she reached Egypt. As she and the gadfly paused for breath, ZEUS managed to return her to her original comely form, and she discovered she was pregnant.

She decided enough was enough. Egypt seemed a good place to settle. So she gave birth to EPAPHUS, yet another of ZEUS’s love children, and went on to become identified with ISIS and later LUNA.

We have no idea what happened to the gadfly.

Jasper ia a type of quartz coloured by a variety of impurities. Haematite makes jaspers red, limonite makes them brown or yellow and chlorite makes them green.

Jasper has a long history, having been used to make amulets and ornaments for many centuries. Its modern name is thought to derive from the ancient Assyrian word for the stone, ashpu. Not only was it often red, the revered colour of life, but the endless variety of tone and pattern, and the fact that jasper forms in massive, carvable blocks, made it a valuable commodity.

Identification and care

  • Red jasper is very common. When broken and recrystallized with more quartz solution it resembles a mosaic.

  • Many varieties of jasper have been given their own names – for example, there is bloodstone or heliotrope, which is green with red spots, and there is orbicular jasper or “ocean jasper”, which features green, blue and yellow concentric patterns.
