Something I love and had to share this morning

I ran across this graphic, which I haven’t seen for a long time. I love it and I had to share it with you. Perhaps I had to share it because of the mood I am in or because it is the truth. I consider myself a Witch of the Old Ways.

The time has come for us to let the world know the truth about our Religion. Remember what our ancestors sacrificed. We cannot let their sacrifices die in vain. We have to let the world know the truth and beauty about our Religion. We have to let the world know about the Goddess and Her beauty and Her Love. And most of all about the beauty of Her Religion and what it has to offer to everyone. We are not evil. We never were. We were victims. But we refuse to be victims anymore. The time has come for us to take a stand. Let the truth be known to all.

Let the world know, we are Witches. We are a proud Race of People. We have a rich heritage. We have a wonderful Religion. Hear Us! Listen and learn the truth. It is time that we take Witchcraft to itself rightful place in the 21st century. Witchcraft has to be brought back up to the mainstream Religions. It is our calling to do this. We must do this, for our Ancestors and our Goddess.

I am a Witch and I am very proud to be one!

Hey There! It’s Wednesday! You Know What That Means…..

only two more days to the weekend! So how’s it going today? Me? I got up on the wrong side of the world today. Truthfully, I got up feeling extremely nasty. I could go into a long bitch session here. but I won’t. What it boils down to is I have an idoit for a son. Those of you that have kids, have you ever wondered…..did I get the wrong kid at the hospital. I am beginning to wonder that. I don’t know where this one came from, under the cabbage patch I guess. I have just been mulling over some things he has said and done in the past month. It is really starting to get under my skin. He is separated from his wife and now he is trying to get back with her. That has me totally puzzled. All her and her mother ever did was scream and holler at him. Telling him to “Shut up” and “Don’t open your mouth” and all that crap. Why on earth would you want to get back with a person like that. Her mother even does her own husband this way, so that’s where the daughter got it from. But yesterday, I was talking to him and he was at his “wife’s” house (it use to be “both” of their house). But now it’s the wife’s house, HA! Anyway, I was asking him about the baby (she is pregnant). I asked him, “how far along is Jane Doe?” And she replied she didn’t know. I asked him, “well when is she due?” She didn’t know. Now all of you mothers out there, tell me, when you were pregnant if someone asked you these questions, didn’t you just glow and pop with the answer. The lying little heifer, don’t want me to know because she knows I know it is not my son’s baby. She openly admitted to him, she was seeing another man. She told my son she had went out to dinner with this man while my son was working a twelve hour shift. The little heifer, is pregnant by another man and laying it off on my son. I told my husband when we go to the hospital for the birth, I am going to start a fight out of this world. I can’t stand her or her family and they can’t stand me. The reason being they can’t stand me is because I am a Witch. And you know what the Bible says about Witches! They try to put on this front they are so religious. I just can’t stand them. I mean I have religious tolerance but it is extremely hard for this bunch. Anyway, I told my husband I was going to make the comment, “when do we get the DNA results?” That ought to start it. Then perhaps, momma-out-law with throw the first punch. Oh, I hope she does. I have waited for years to pay her back for all the shut up’s she has given to my son. I am sorry. I am just angry and upset that my son is so damn stupid. Why can’t he see the truth? To make matter’s worse, she is carrying a boy. My son has always wanted a boy so he is stuck up her butt. He is trying to get back with her while she is still seeing this other man.

I have discussed this with my husband and he told me to do what I had to do. I have a very strict policy, I never cast a spell against or for a family member. But I am on the verge of breaking that. I want my son to wake up and see the truth. There are other women out there, what makes this one so special? Because she treat him like crap? I don’t get it. I don’t get her or her family. I guess my problem with her family is because the way they feel about Witches. Anyone that feels like that, I have no patience, tolerance or compassion for whatsoever. I don’t believe any other Witch would either. They don’t think the grandkids ought to be around me because I would be a bad influence. What the heck? I hate to tell them, one of those girls is a natural born Witch. I have already made the connection with her. She has Witch blood flowing through her veins. I know and the girl knows it. She loves me to pieces and every time she comes out here, she breaks my heart when it comes time to leave. She always tells me, “I love you, Mammy. I wish I could spend more time with you. I love you so much!” Now wouldn’t that break your heart. But the out-laws think that would be a horrible idea. I didn’t find out till yesterday that my son had been sneaking the kids out here while they have been separated. Sneaking them, me being their grandmother and he is sneaking them out here. That pissed me to the bottom. That is when I lost it. I talked to my husband and he keeps encouraging me to take care of that side of the family (I use the term “family” very loosely). Boy, I would love too. It is eating me alive.

I know most of you are going to go, “Oh, my Goddess, you didn’t” but I did. I drug out the Ouija Board this morning. You can use it for searching your inner being as well as contacting the other side. I am so tore up about this, I had to search my soul. I held the Ouija board and made contact with it. I let it read my inner being. Then I asked my questions about myself. I got my answer and it sort of helped to ease my turmoil. My inner being told me, I was to help people not harm people. So I guess it is my job or calling to help these hard-headed idoits learn the truth about Witches and Witchcraft. What a job? I think I am going to need a lot of help from the Goddess on this one. It is very hard to put behind you hurtful things that have been said and done. But I guess when you do, you are the better person for it. Or in this case, the better Witch!

So do you have any suggestions or comments? I would love to hear them. Ever been in a situation like this? Ever had one of your children blab to the world you were a Witch? If so, how did you handle it? Did it turn into a nasty situation? You see I have lots of questions. Because everyone that knows me, knows I am a Witch. They are all accepting except this bunch. I don’t understand it. If you got any suggestion, I would love to hear them because I am totally baffled on this one.

Daily OM for August 28 – A Special Goodnight

A Special Goodnight

Creating a Nightly Ritual

by Madisyn Taylor

Bedtime can be a perfect time for a nighttime ritual of sending love to the world and finding gratitude for your day.

At the end of the day, as the sweet, dark stillness of night beckons us to lay down our bones and rest, we find ourselves at a clear transition point: Behind us lies the previous day and all that has come before; ahead of us, dawn heralds the unfolding of all that is yet to be. While many of us have morning rituals that connect us with our center and help us to set intentions, we may want to explore the magic and power of nighttime ritual as well. It holds for us a beautiful chance for self-appreciation and blessing. Before you go to bed each night, you can send gratitude, compassion, and healing to the being you have been up until this moment. And you can send lightness and love into the future for the one you are in the process of becoming.

Though simple, this action honors the journey you have taken thus far, while opening you to the wonderful possibilities still ahead. When you consciously engage with your own evolution this way, you may find that your sleep gets sweeter, filling your night with a deeper sense of trust and relaxation. As you rest, you can surrender to these peaceful hours, knowing that the road behind you has been seen and acknowledged with respect and kindness, while the path ahead now holds your own benevolence and well wishes.

This bedtime ritual empowers you as the only one who can determine the meaning of your own past and the hopefulness of your future. By setting this special time aside each night, you can begin to orient yourself on your path of growing. It allows you to let the past have its place, to trust that the future is taken care of, and to simply rest yourself in the graceful arms of the present moment.

SpellCrafting 101

Spellcrafting 101

Contrary to popular belief, witches do not spend most of their time casting spells. Most of us have full-time jobs, busy social lives, families, and other demands on our times. A spell, properly cast, can be a tremendous drain on a witch’s physic resources. It’s not a task to be undertaken lightly.

Spellcraft does have its place the life of a witch, but not nearly as major a one as many people suppose. In fact, a wise witch is very sparing in her use of spellcraft. Pagans practice first and foremost a religion — a religion quite unlike many others, in that beliefs and practices vary, but a religion nonetheless. We have many different conceptions of what the Divine might be, but we do all believe that One exists. By definition, God/dess is more powerful and wiser than us. So before we jump in and try changing things according to our own limited understanding, we consider the situation carefully.

Remember the Wiccan Rede

, a basic ethical guideline that Wiccans – and many other pagans – follow: An it harm none, do what you will. As has been discussed elsewhere, the Rede is deceptively simple. Obviously, physical harm, emotional harm, slander, theft, and other crimes are verboten according to the Rede. But what about other, more subtle forms of harm?

Most witches agree that curses, hexes, and other harmful spellcraft is more trouble than it’s worth. Hand in hand with the Wiccan Rede goes something called the Law of Returns. In general terms, this Law states that all energy you send out into the Universe comes back to you. It may not come back right away, and it may not come back in the form you’re expecting, but it does come back. Different traditions put their own twist on the Law of Returns, saying that the energy comes back threefold or fivefold. I’m not so picky about the math, but I have seen the Law in action, and respect it highly.

Interpreting the Rede

Witches continue to disagree over other grey areas. For instance, does casting a spell on another person without consulting them first constitute harm, even if the intentions are good? What about actions taken in self-defense?

Personally, I avoid all actions – whether mundane or magickal – that can cause harm to another being. In my experience, acts of hatred and vengeance are best countered with actions of love and kindness.

Working my will on another person without their consent constitutes harm. To that end, I never cast a spell on another person without obtaining permission first. Manipulative spells designed to make someone else fall in love – whether with me or with a third party – to move away, or to leave a job ultimately backfire on the person who casts them. This policy also extends to more beneficial spells, such as spells for healing, prosperity, or other kinds of blessings. Only the Goddess has the power to know what is best for another person. No matter how noble my own intentions, it is presumptuous and ultimately harmful for me to meddle in someone else’s affairs.

That’s not to say that I haven’t done a little juju for my friends. Far from it; I’ve prepared charmed sachets for newlywed couples, given suggestions on how to attract jobs, held a healing circle for my lover, and even suggested a ritual to help a friend open herself up to the possibility of a love affair. But the main ingredient in all that magick was consent. Before I drag out my herbs and my athame, I get the permission of the person whom the spell is meant to benefit.

Often times people ask me if I have spells. Yes, I have spells. Some have worked, some haven’t. What a witch must keep in mind is that what works for me, may not work for another witch. Magick is within everything. How it is perceived is different from witch to witch. Some think patchouli oil is the best oil for a prosperity spell. I prefer clove oil and have had success in using it. One of the wonders of magick is that there is normally a wide variety of correspondences to choose from for any one desired result. There must be about a hundred different herbs listed for love and at least thirty for wealth and money (a few of which I have listed).

I prefer to perform candle magick. Candle spells are simple, they are not time consuming (very important to a witch with little time) and they work. When I do a candle spell, I carefully choose an appropriate color for the candle, a stone, an oil, and three herbs, one for the physical realm, one for the mental realm and one for the spiritual realm, plus one more as a type of catalyst (normally these catalysts are either Dragon’s blood, Mandrake or Mistletoe).

How do I pick my correspondences? First, I must know what I’m doing the spell for. Is it a prosperity spell, a healing spell, a spell to find a new job or maybe to improve communication with a loved one? Once I determine what I’m trying to accomplish, I hit the books. Within my library, I have several books that index what various colors, herbs, oils and stones correspond with various desired results. I try to be as specific as I can and try to blend my choice of correspondences to better “describe” my desired result. If I’m going to perform a prosperity spell, what attributes are going to be needed to reach the final goal? Creativity, physical strength, courage? I try to chose some herb or the oil to correspond with those added aspects and keep in mind that most herbs and oils have several attributes. Its is very possible to have an herb with the attributes of both wealth and, say, strength. With one herb you can accomplish two ends. I leave the color of the candle to the core of the spell. For a prosperity spell, green, a banishing spell, black. The same applies to the stone I use. I leave it to the core of the spell.

Having said all that, now I must also add, use what you have! One of the first spells I did I literally raided my spice cabinet for the herbs I needed. Okay, so maybe fennel would not have been my first choice, but it worked! I am fortunate to have an orange tree in my back yard. Yes, I use the leaves, blossoms, fruit, and bark in place of other possibly more popular herbs. Use what you have!

Once I’ve gathered my correspondences, I then charge them with the purpose of the spell. How is this done? There are a few techniques that must be utilized for this part of spellworking.

Ability to Meditate

This is the art of clearing the mind of all mundane thoughts and feelings. It is a state of relaxation and peace, the goal to reach a state of non-thought. This is not easy and I still haven’t mastered the technique yet, but do the best you can. There are several very good books on the subject and even in many of the books on Wicca and witchcraft there are simple techniques to help in mastering meditation. This is essential to spellwork. Your mind must be at peace so that you can focus on what you’re trying to accomplish.

Ability to Visualize

This is the ability to see with your mind, not with your senses. Although it is called visualization, remember, use all your senses! Close your eyes. Within your mind’s eye, see a tree, whatever kind of tree you want or are familiar with. Let your mind see its limbs, its leaves or needles (depending on the type of tree), the trunk, etc. Let your mind feel the bark. Is it smooth, rough, spongy? Does the tree have a fragrance? Let your mind smell that fragrance. Let your mind hear the wind as it rustles the leaves. Visualization is not easy for some, but with practice you can visualize anything. (Taste also falls into this category, but for our little discussion, tasting a tree may not be prudent.) During spellwork you will visualize your goal (and be specific and detailed!) before directing it into the item you’re charging.

Ability to Direct Energy

This is the ability to take the energies of the correspondences and your own energy and directing it towards your goal. When you charge an object, that energy is initially coming from you. From within yourself imagine (visualize) a bright light, maybe white or the color that corresponds with your goal, forming within yourself centered between your chest and stomach. Let that light grow and expand. Then direct that light up through your body, down your projective arm, out your fingertips (or through your athame or wand) and into whatever your trying to charge. While you direct that light, that energy, you will be visualizing your intent with as many specifics as you can.

It is important to realize that magick is energy flow. It is not power. All spells create a tangible connection between the objects used and yourself. When you work magick, be specific, but be careful! If you do a spell for a new job, remember to be specific in that your new job doesn’t come at the expense of another! “An Ye Harm None” Remember these words when you work magick. As you finish your spell, (for me after I light the candle), I add something to the affect of “May the energy of this magick harm none and take a path that is for the good of all involved.”

For candle spells remember that the flame must be allowed to continue to burn until it goes out on its own. I use three and seven day candles that are in glass jars. You can sprinkle your herbs on the top of them and they are safer. Remember not to leave a burning candle near drapes or where something flammable may fall into the flame. Keep in mind that the glass jars get hot, so handle with care and as the candle reaches the bottom of the jar, make sure the candle is not sitting on something that might burn from the heat. I suggest getting a ceramic dish and put some sand in the bottom to act as insulation. When I leave my home, I place the candle in my bath tub, just in case. If for some reason it gets knocked over, there is nothing in my tub that could catch on fire.

For positive spells, once the candle is out, use the stone as a talisman. Carry it with you or put it someplace where its presence will have an affect. For banishing spells, very carefully remove all remnants, of the candle, especially the stone, without touching it. Wrap the remnants in white paper and bury it outside, preferably some distance away.

Remember to write down your spells! You can either keep these spells in your Book of Shadows or elsewhere. My Book of Shadows is riddled with pieces of paper, napkins, whatever I happen to jot notes and spells down on. Some choose to use their computers as their BoS. Regardless, with the spells written down, can keep track of what works and what doesn’t and you can also keep track of what you are doing while you’re doing it.

A few words about magick and ethics. Most magick, at least initially, is done for yourself. There will be times when spellwork will be used to benefit other people. Any ethical witch WILL NOT do a spell that will affect someone else specifically without that person’s permission. A witch must respect another person’s soul path. What if you can’t ask them (i.e. you can’t reach them, the person is unable to communicate, etc)? Then you must honestly consider if that person would object. If your favorite aunt were deathly ill and could not communicate, and you wanted to do a healing spell for her, you would need to consider if she would agree to the spell if she could. If she were a devout Fundamentalist Christian, chances are pretty good she’d say no. You must respect her choices and her soul path.

No witch in their right mind will perform magick that is intended to manipulate, control or harm another. Remember, what you send out will come back to you threefold.

A witch should never sell a spell. If someone asks you to do a spell for them, it is not unreasonable to ask them to cover the expenses of the materials used, but other then that, no money should be received for the magick you do. That is counter productive and can cloud the intent of the magick.

When someone asks you to do a spell for them, if possible, instead of you doing the spell, teach them how to do it. The spell will have a better chance at success and they will have a better understanding of how the magick works

The Wicca Book of Days for August 28

Memorable Mint

The botanical name of mint is Mentha, for a Greek myth tells that the river nymph Mentha (or Mintha) was transformed into this herb following a doomed affair with Hades. The Greeks and Romans dedicated the plant to Mercury, this Virgoan day’s planetary ruler, however, on account of its ability to clear the head and encourage rational thinking. Still the world’s most popular breath-freshener and an invaluable herb to have to hand in the kitchen, it is furthermore a refreshing, cooling agent whose power to relax muscles makes mint tea an excellent digestive.

Be Open to Orange!

If you need to remain calm and objective before making an important decision today, infuse yourself with these Mercurial characteristics by incorporating a splash of orange – Mercury’s color – into your outfit, maybe in the form of a scarf or handkerchief.

Elemental Correspondence

Elemental Correspondence

Traditional Witches do not have set correspondences as Wiccans do, and often the element that is resident in a directional spot in ritual will change based on where the Witch is holding their ritual. Traditional Witches take this practice from that of their Ancestors. Early Europeans believed that the Gods and spirits inhabited the land itself rather than being part of a separate world. When people in older times traveled they would take the spirits of their Gods and Ancestors with them. When they would do any sort of magickal work or pray to their Gods they would align themselves according the relation of where they were to their Homeland or Homeland of their Gods since this is where they felt that they truly resided. In order to do this, the Witch would look upon the North Star, the traveler’s star, and use that as their point of reference. If the Witch happens to be in the Homeland, then the correspondences are no longer needed. This is still done today, where as in Wicca the directions are often predetermined based on the Wiccan tradition one is practicing with.

Blowing in the Wind: The Element of Air

Blowing in the Wind

The Element of Air

In the Wiccan tradition, Air is the Element of the East and might be represented on an altar as incense, feathers, or an athame. It can be as soft as a whispered breath and as violent as a tornado, so it isn’t an Element to be taken lightly. It should come as no surprise that particularly persistent winds have even been given names–the Scirocco winds in the Mediterranean and the Santa Ana winds on the United States West Coast, for example. When these winds blow, they can literally change people’s temperaments and often fan wild fires. When mixed with another powerful Element, Water, Air can produce a fury we call hurricanes.

But Air is a necessary and benevolent Element, too. Without even thinking about it, we use our breath to blow out candles, sing songs of celebration and whisper secrets. How often have you “stepped out for a breath of fresh air”? Used during meditation and to alleviate the pains of childbirth, the Element of Air is healing and vital.

Sardonyx & Peridot

Chalcedony

Two gemstones are traditionally identified as being August’s birthstones. One is sardonyx, a form of chalcedony that exhibits white stripes separating larger, orangey-brown bands. Sardonyx is said to impart self-control and vivaciousness to its wearer, which may be why it is said to ensure a happy marriage. The other crystal is the yellowy-green Peridot, which is reputed to be a bringer of success. It is credited with the power to forge friendships, to replace feelings of nervousness with a positive and confident outlook, and to increase physical strength.

Sky Salutations

Honor Nut, the Egyptian Sky Goddess in your rituals on this her birthday. When Nut and her twin, Geb, the Earth God were born locked together, they had to be pried apart by their father the Air Deity Shu, causing Nut’s arched body to become the celestial vault.

Casting Pentacle Wards

Protect Your Home With The Power of the Pentacle

Items You Will Need:

  • Sage Smudge Stick.
  • Sandalwood Incense(one for every room)
  • Ceremonial Robes(optional)

The Spell:

Start by meditating for at least an hour or so. You need to empty your mind of all your negative thoughts and feelings. Place a stick of sandalwood incense in each room of your home. Pray to your deity or who/whatever you worship. Pray for protection of your home and family. Light your smudge stick and start by tracing a pentacle in the air in each room’s windows and doors. Start at the lower left-hand part of the pentacle and imagine a dome forming over of your home. This spell needs to be redone every month because the wards will lose power over time. Finish by thanking who/whatever you prayed to.

The Wicca Book of Days for August 24 – Versatile Lavender

The Wicca Book of Days for August 24

Versatile Lavender

Like Hermes and Mercury – the Gods to whom the Greeks and Romans dedicated this herb – lavender is thought to have the power to encourage healing, and is extremely versatile, so that its flowers can also be used to provide perfume and to impart a tasty tang to culinary oils, dishes, and salads. The roots of its name lie in the Roman verb lavare, “to wash,” which points to its cleansing properties. It also helps to keep the home hygienic by warding off flies and other disease-spreading insects, which appear to be repelled by its strong smell.

Scented Sachets

If you like fragrant bathwater, simply stuff a few handfuls of dried lavender flowers into the toe of a clean stocking or nylon knee-high and tie a knot in the top. Now place it in the tub while you are running the hot water, and the sachet will release its delicious scent.

The Wicca Book of Days for August 23 – Virgo, the Virgin

The Wicca Book of Days for August 23

Virgo, the Virgin

The sun now relinquishes its astrological rulership of the heavens and cedes it to Mercury, the ruling planet of Virgo, the sign whose zodiacal month begins today. The planet whose namesake is the quick-witted Roman messenger God will impart an intelligent, curious, and communicative flavor to the coming days, along with adaptability, sociability, and a lively contrariness that may be redoubled by Virgo’s mutable, or changeable, quadruplicity. By contrast, the element of earth is a  practical, productive, and grounding influence, while a feminine (negative or passive) polarity provides receptiveness, thoughtfulness and supportive tendencies.

Fend off Fire

Do as they did in ancient Rome today and observe the Volcanalia by dedicating your day to Vulcan, the smithy God of Fire. The Romans hoped to placate Vulcan by burning fish on his altar. Replicate this offering with a barbecue!

A Divine Sacrifice

As the Romans’ “imperial” month, August can be symbolically linked with the chief deities of many pantheons, including the Norse Odin. And just as the Horned God is willingly sacrificed at the start of August, so Odin endured the pain of a self-inflicted wound as he hung, impaled on his spear, from the world tree, Yggdrasil, for nine days and nights (traditionally from August 17 to August 25) until the runes appeared to him, whereupon he seized them and released himself. Odin therefore suffered untold agonies to gain, and then pass on to humans, the mystical insights that the runes represent.

The Rosy Cross

It was on this day in 1623 that placards appeared over Paris, France, publicizing the Brethren of the Rosy Cross, a secret society whose aim was the “General Reformation of the Whole Wide World.” The rose symbolizes love think of a loved one or cast a love spell today.

Guaranteeing Grain

The Consualia, a festival dedicated to the Roman granary God Consus, was celebrated on August 21 in ancient times, in the hope of securing divine protection for the just-threshed harvest. On the Consualia, sacrifices made by the flamen Quirinalis (priest of Quirinus) were offered to Consus at his Maximus, where an underground altar was dedicated to him. Above ground, races were held, while some equines were garlanded and given the day off, for Consus was furthermore equated with Neptune Equester (“Equestrian Neptune”).

A Historical Healer

The Persian physician and philosopher Ibn Sina (980 – 1037), or Avicenna, is said to have been born on this day in Uzbekistan. Avicenna’s The Canon of Medicine was an important reference work for European healers. Read more about this great man’s theories today.

Sunflower Story

As a Leonian day, August 17’s “planetary” ruler is the sun, with which many Gods have been identified, including Helios. A tale told by the ancient Greeks about this golden deity concerns the nymph Clytia (or Clytie), who feel in love with Helios, but whose passion was not returned. Jealous of his affair with Leucothoe, a Babylonian princess, Clytia told her strict father of it, whereupon he buried his daughter alive. As for Clytia, she eventually wasted away gazing at Helios, whereupon she was transformed into a sunflower, which still follows the movement of the sun with its head.

A Sun-loving Flower

Place a sunflower on your altar, both to concentrate your thoughts on the Sun and as a reminder of the destruction inherent in burning passion. When they have ripened, harvest the seeds. Remove the tough cases to find a delicious, nutritious snack.

Chelsea Curatives

The oldest rock garden still to be seen in England was completed on August 16, 1773, in the Chelsea district of London, England. It is one of the many marvels that together form the Chelsea Physic Garden, which was established near the River Thames in 1673 as a teaching garden for trainee apothecaries, who needed to become familiar with the appearance and properties of curative plants. Today, its medicinal roots continue to ben nurtured in such areas as the  Garden of World Medicine and the Pharmaceutical Garden. For more information, visit www.chelseaphysicgarden.co.uk.

Saint Roch

In Christian tradition August 16 is the feast day of Saint Roch, a French-born hermit who not only caught and survived the plague, but cured others of it, too. Invoke his aid today if you, or your friends are unwell, and a swift recovery may follow!

Magickal Living for the Witch for August 15th – Magick & You – Where To Begin

Magick & You – Where To Begin

Magick Starts with You

Magick is natural. Magick requires effort. You will only receive what you actually place into it. Magick is usually not instantaneous. Spells require time to be effective. Magick is a divine act. Magick is knowledge – not only of its ways or laws, but also of its effectiveness. Don’t believe magick works. Know it does. Magick is Love. The moment anger, hate or jealousy enters your magick, you endanger yourself and thouse around you. Love yourself and others, always considering free will. For to take the free will of another way, is to control – and magick is about love, free will and freedom, not control. Better yourself, bring good things to you, but consider the consequences before casting. Use the magickal energy that the universe is made up of for good. And be sure that it harms none – not even yourself!

To KNOW – Know yourself, know your craft. Research your spells, apply all your knowledge.

To WILL – Focus your mind, your power and inner being.

To DARE – Believe in your spells and all you do with Positive thought and intent. All this is energy you place in the universe.

To REMAIN SILENT – Speak not of your spells….For every thought placed into your magick, affects it.  (We don’t want other people’s thoughts in our magick, do we?)

With all that being said, Magick – can be as simple or complex as you wish it to be. It isn’t always about how you perform the spell, but what you actually place into it. And magick isn’t always about casting a spell either. Remember all thought is energy, all energy is in motion, so every thought in one form or other will push energy to condition. So, positive thoughts lead to positive actions, which lead to positive results. Don’t get all tied up in charts and graphs. It can be quite confusing and disheartening when trying to place a spell together and you find that you have to wait 20 days to the new moon, or a year and a day to ask a tree for a wand….Simplify your life and magick – and you will see greater results and find peace of mind.

The answers lie within…..

Moon Meteorology

As Leo’s ruler, the sun may currently be playing a starring role in the heavens, but the moon continues to illuminate the night sky. In The English Husbandman (1635), Gervase Markham (1568 – 1637) advises readers on how to forecast the weather with the moon’s help:  “If when you see the new Moon appear,… she be black or discoloured in her midst …if she be compassed about either with thick or waterish transparent vapours; or if she look more than ordinarily pale, all these are infallible sign of Rain.

Moon Monikers

Before your August Esbat, consider which aspect of this time of year you wish to highlight and then address the full moon accordingly. The name Corn Moon emphasizes the ripe harvest, while Wyrt or Wort (Old English for “root” and “medicinal plant” respectively) Moon focuses on the gathering of herbs.

Which Witch Are You?

Which Witch Are You?

Solitary:

Practices the craft alone and does not work with a group or coven. By the Gardnerian and Alexandrian way solitary witches are not witches. In order to be considered a witch you must work with a coven.

Eclectic:

These witches pick chose and mix various traditions. They have no set path.

Hereditary:

These are the practitioners who have been taught the craft from their relative. The craft was passed, unbroken, from generation to generation.

So, now, do you want to be a solitary witch or work with a coven? Let me give you a few Pros and Cons to consider.

PRO

If you join a coven you will receive lots of support. There are people available with the same beliefs to talk to. You will also get some structure. You can work your way up from dedicant to High Priest(s).

CON

Just by the fact that there is structure in a coven may discourage some people. The coven decides on the where, when at time of the Sabbats and meetings. If you break the laws of the coven (dishonor) you will be asked to leave. The cons of a coven are not unlike those that relate to any group activity.

PRO

OK, so you will go solo and be a solitary. This means that you can learn at your own pace. You can follow your own schedule for Sabbats, within reason. You attire is strictly up to you. Some solitaries will join with a know coven to celebrate Sabbats. You can design your own rituals.

CON

The major downside is that you are on are on your own. Help and guidance from knowledgeable witches are not going to be readily available. The solitary had no linage to look back on for guidance. Solitary witches are looked down on by name of the coven witches. What do you know – a class structure L

So what type of training do you want? You can find metaphysical shops and seek help from them. You can use the local library or book shop. If you have internet access there is a wealth of information available for you.

You may want to join a coven. This decision must be made carefully. Some covens are basically nothing more than social groups. Others are based on the D & D games. Be selective, just as they will want to interview you, you should reciprocate in kind.

NOTE: Witches do not try to convert people.

Once you have decided upon a coven go to a few open Sabbats and meetings, if permitted. If you can not attend an open Sabbat write the coven off. With the exception of two Sabbats, all others can be open.

Sit down with the Priestess / Priest and see what the coven will want of you. The will also ask what you can bring to the coven. Remember, a coven becomes your family away from home. The coven should NEVER supercede your home life. You family will always come first.

Once you are in total agreement – both ways you can apply to become a dedicant. During this time you will be kept under the eye of the Priestess and Priest. Your initial training will last for a year and a day. After that time, if upon the agreement of all, you can become an initiate. From that point on you will go through the three degrees of initiation. Each degree will take a minimum of a year and a day to complete.

Being a member of a coven is a commitment. You will be expected to attend coven functions. Covens usually meet to celebrate the 8 Sabbats – holidays of the God and 13 Esbats – holidays of the Goddess. Members of the coven are given a part to perform during the rituals. Not showing up for ritual is a major NO-NO. If you do not make it you can ruin the ritual.

You may also be asked to help the coven. Many covens take on community work to help the community.

Many covens plan outing and fun events for their members…

One thing to remember no matter what path you choose; When the Student is ready, the Teacher Will Appear.

Gardnerian Wicca

Gardnerian Wicca

*A retired British civil servant named Gerald B. Gardner is the ‘Grandfather’, at the very least, of almost all Neo-Wicca. He was initiated into a coven of Witches in the New Forest region of England in 1939 by a High Priestess named ‘Old Dorothy’ Clutterbuck. In 1949 he wrote a novel [*High Magic’s Aid*] about medieval Witchcraft in which quite a bit of the Craft as practiced by that coven was used. In 1951 the last of the English laws against Witchcraft were repealed (primarily due to the pressure of Spiritualists) and Gardner published *Witchcraft Today*, which set forth a version of the rituals and traditions of that coven. There is an enormous amount of disagreement about virtually every statement I have made in this paragraph.

Gardnerism is both a tradition and a family, and lineage is a family tree. The High Priestess rules the coven, and the principles of love and trust preside. We follow our handed down book more carefully than many others, but we are free to add and improvise, as long as we preserve the original.

We work skyclad, practice binding and scourging, are hierarchal and secretive, therefore we are controversial. We’re also controversial because we were first – the first craft tradition in the U. S. and descended from the man largely responsible for starting the craft revival. So, we’re called ‘the snobs of the craft’, but I think we’re as much fun as anyone else; our parties as good, our jokes as bad’

A Gardnerian can trace his/her lineage matrilineally back to a High Priestess who worked with Gerald. For virtually all American Gardnerians, that means his last HPS, Monique Wilson. Monique initiated the Bucklands and Rosemary Buckland initiated Theas, so far as anyone knows, the only one of Rosemary’s Thirds who passed the initiation on – which is why she has been called (but doesn’t call herself) ‘Witch Queen of America. ‘[the foregoing quotes provided by Deborah Lipp Bonewits, a Gardnerian Third Degree High Priestess as well as an ADF Druidess.]

*Each Gardnerian coven is autonomous and is headed by a High Priestess who can turn to her queen (the High Priestess who trained her) for counsel and advice. This maintains the lineage and creates a pool of experienced and knowledgeable leaders and teachers.

*Reincarnation and the Wiccan Rede [An it harm none do what you will] are basic tenants of the tradition. Covens are as much as possible composed of male/female pairs for balance. Most working is accomplished with the energy raised by the interaction of the Lord and Lady as represented by the couples in the coven by dancing, chanting, etc.

*Like many Wiccan traditions, Gardnerians have three degrees. An American Gardnerian must be of the 3rd degree before she can become a HPS. The HPS/HP are responsible for conducting services (circles), training their conveners, and preserving and passing on Gardnerian Craft. *[This material quoted from Converging Paths Newsletter, Kyril, Brita, & Hugh authors. ]

A lot of the controversy surrounding Gardnerianism questions the sources of the rituals and other materials, particularly those appearing in print. It is true that Gardner presented these materials as if they were directly from his New Forest tradition. It is clear, however, that whatever materials the coven may have had when he was initiated, Gerald made a lot of changes and added a great deal. Literary sources of the published Book of Shadows include Blake, Kipling, Yeats and Crowley. Much of the published material was written by Doreen Valiente, a member of the coven for a time and later founder of her own groups and author of many excellent books on the Craft.

Gardnerian Witches without doubt do have many materials which have not appeared in print, however, their emphasis on secrecy has made them a punchline in the Wiccan social world. How many Gardnerians does it take to change a light bulb? That’s a secret! Their High Priestess will usually be called ‘Lady’ Soandso and High Priest, ‘Lord Whatisname’. [This is far more true in the U. S. than it is in England.]

The Wicca Book of Days for August 14 – Fiery Correspondences

The Wicca Book of Days for August 14

Fiery Correspondences

One of August 14’s zodiacal sign of Leo’s most important correspondences, astrologically and magically speaking is with the element of Fire, which like each of the other three elements, is in turn associated with a particular season of the year, cardinal direction, and color. Given the heat that it generates, it is not surprising that fire’s season should be Summer or that its direction should be South. Similarly, fire’s color is typically specified as being flame red, although yellow, golden, and orange hues are also regarded as being fiery.

Solar Seeds

The sun’s rule will soon be ending, so if you feel that your self-confidence could do with boosting, or you wish to cultivate any other solar or fiery qualities, now’s the time to light a golden candle and gaze into the energizing flame as you visualize the desired characteristic taking root and growing within you.
