Gods – Gwydion (Welsh – Celtic)

Gwydion (Celtic Welsh)

Gwydion fab Dôn is a magician, hero and trickster of Welsh mythology, appearing most prominently in the Fourth Branch of the Mabinogi, which focuses largely on his relationship with his young nephew, Lleu Llaw Gyffes. He also appears prominently in the Welsh Triads, the Book of Taliesin and the Stanzas of the Graves.

The name Gwydion (which should more properly be spelled Gwyddien in Modern Welsh, as can be adduced from its Old Welsh form Guidgen; cognate with Old Irish Fidgen) may be interpreted as “Born of Trees”.[1]

War with the South
Gilfaethwy, nephew to the Venedotian king, Math fab Mathonwy, falls in love with his uncle’s virgin foot-holder, Goewin. His brother Gwydion conspires to start a war between the north and the south, so as give the brothers the opportunity to rape Goewin while Math is distracted. To this end, Gwydion employs his magic powers to steal a number of otherworldy pigs from the Demetian king, Pryderi, who retaliates by marching on Gwynedd. Meanwhile, Gwydion and Gilfaethwy attack and rape Goewin.

Pryderi and his men march north and fight a battle between Maenor Bennardd and Maenor Coed Alun, but are forced to retreat. He is pursued to Nant Call, where more of his men are slaughtered, and then to Dol Benmaen, where he suaffers a third defeat. To avoid further bloodshed, it is agreed that the outcome of the battle should be decided by single combat between Gwydion and Pryderi. The two contenders meet at a place called Y Velen Rhyd in Ardudwy, and “because of strength and valour and magic and enchantment”, Gwydion triumphs and Pryderi is killed. The men of Dyfed retreat back to their own land, lamenting over the death of their lord.

Birth of Lleu
When Math hears of the assault on Goewin, he turns his nephews into a series of mated pairs of animals: Gwydion becomes a stag for a year, then a sow and finally a wolf. Gilfaethwy becomes a hind deer, a boar and a she-wolf. Each year they produce an offspring which is sent to Math: Hyddwn, Hychddwn and Bleiddwn. After three years, Math releases his nephews from their punishment and begins the search for a new foot-holder. Gwydion suggests his sister Arianrhod, who is magically tested for virginity by Math. During the test, she gives birth to a “sturdy boy with thick yellow hair” whom Math names Dylan and who takes on the nature of the seas until his death at his uncle Gofannon’s hands.

Ashamed, Arianrhod runs to the door, but on her way out something small drops from her, which Gwydion wraps up and places in a chest at the foot of his bed. Some time later, he hears screams from within the chest, and opens it to discover a baby boy. Some scholars have suggested that in an earlier form of the Fourth Branch, Gwydion was the father of Arianrhod’s sons.[2]

The tynghedau of Arianrhod
Some years later, Gwydion accompanies the boy to Caer Arianrhod, and presents him to his mother. The furious Arianrhod, shamed by this reminder of her loss of virginity, places a tynged on the boy: that only she could give him a name. Gwydion however tricks his sister by disguising himself and the boy as cobblers and luring Arianrhod into going to them in person in order to have some shoes made for her. The boy throws a stone and strikes a wren “between the tendon and the bone of its leg”, causing Arianrhod to make the remark “it is with a skillful hand that the fair-haired one has hit it “. At that Gwydion reveals himself, saying Lleu Llaw Gyffes; “the fair-haired one with the skillful hand,” is his name now”. Furious at this trickery, Arianrhod places another tynged on Lleu: he shall receive arms from no one but Arianrhod herself. Gwydion tricks his sister once again, and she unwittingly arms Lleu herself, leading to her placing a third tynged on him: that he shall never have a human wife.

So as to counteract Arianrhod’s curse, Math and Gwydion:
“ [take] the flowers of the oak, and the flowers of the broom, and the flowers of the meadowsweet, and from those they conjured up the fairest and most beautiful maiden anyone had ever seen. And they baptized her in the way that they did at that time, and named her Blodeuwedd. ”
Lleu’s death and resurrection
Blodeuwedd has an affair with Gronw Pebr, the lord of Penllyn, and the two conspire to murder Lleu. Blodeuwedd tricks Lleu into revealing how he may be killed, since he can not be killed during the day or night, nor indoors or outdoors, neither riding nor walking, not clothed and not naked, nor by any weapon lawfully made. He reveals to her that he can only be killed at dusk, wrapped in a net with one foot on a cauldron and one on a goat and with a spear forged for a year during the hours when everyone is at mass. With this information she arranges his death.

Struck by the spear thrown by Gronw’s hand, Lleu transforms into an eagle and flies away. Gwydion tracks him down and finds him perched high on an oak tree. Through the singing of an englyn (known as englyn Gwydion) he lures him down from the oak tree and switches him back to his human form. Gwydion and Math nurse Lleu back to health before reclaiming his lands from Gronw and Blodeuwedd. In the face-off between Lleu and Gronw, Gronw asks if he may place a large stone between himself and Lleu’s spear. Lleu allows him to do so, then throws his spear which pierces both the stone and Gronw, killing him. Gwydion corners Blodeuwedd and turns her into an owl, the creature hated by all other birds. The tale ends with Lleu ascending to the throne of Gwynedd.

The Battle of the Trees
A large tradition seems to have once surrounded the Battle of the Trees, a mythological conflict fought between the sons of Dôn and the forces of Annwn, the Welsh Otherworld. Amaethon, Gwydion’s brother, steals a white roebuck and a whelp from Arawn, king of the otherworld, leading to a great battle.

Gwydion fights alongside his brother and, assisted by Lleu, enchants the “elementary trees and sedges” to rise up as warriors against Arawn’s forces. The alder leads the attack, while the aspen falls in battle, and heaven and earth tremble before the oak, a “valiant door keeper against the enemy”. The bluebells combine and cause a “consternation” but the hero is the holly, tinted with green.

A warrior fighting alongside Arawn cannot be vanquished unless his enemies can guess his name. Gwydion guesses the warrior’s name, identifying him from the sprigs of alder on his shield, and sings two englyns:

“Sure-hoofed is my steed impelled by the spur;
The high sprigs of alder are on thy shield;
Bran art thou called, of the glittering branches.”

Sure-hoofed is my steed in the day of battle:
The high sprigs of alder are on thy hand:
Bran by the branch thou bearest
Has Amathaon the good prevailed.”

Other traditions
Caer Gwydion, the castle of Gwydion, was the traditional Welsh name for the Milky Way.

In the 10th century, Old Welsh “Harleian” genealogies (Harleian MS 3859), mention is made of Lou Hen (“Lou the old”) map Guidgen, who most scholars identify with Lleu and Gwydion (who is implied to be Lleu’s father in the Mabinogi of Math, though this relationship isn’t explicitly stated). In the genealogy they are made direct descendants Caratauc son of Cinbelin son of Teuhant (recte Tehuant), who are to be identified with the historical Catuuellaunian leaders Caratacus, Cunobelinus and Tasciovanus.

A number of references to Gwydion can be found in early Welsh poetry. The poem Prif Gyuarch Taliessin asks “Lleu and Gwydion / Will they perform magics?”, while in the same corpus, the poem Kadeir Cerridwen relates many familiar traditions concerning Gwydion, including his creating of a woman out of flowers and his bringing of the pigs from the south. This poem also refers to a lost tradition concerning a battle between Gwydion and an unknown enemy at the Nant Ffrangon. Another Taliesin poem, Echrys Ynys refers to Gwynedd as the “Land of Gwydion” while in the Ystoria Taliesin, the legendary bard claims to have been present at Gwydion’s birth “before the court of Don”.

The Welsh Triads name Gwydion as one of the “Three Golden Shoemakers of the Island of Britain” alongside Manawydan fab Llyr and Caswallawn fab Beli, and records that Math taught him one of the “Three Great Enchantments”. The Stanzas of the Graves record that he was buried at Dinas Dinlle, the city of Lleu.

A reference to Gwydion is also made in the Dialogue of Taliesin and Ugnach, a dialogue-poem found in the Black Book of Carmarthen. Within the narrative, the character of Taliesin states:

“When I return from Caer Seon
From contending with Jews
I will come to the city of Lleu and Gwydion.”

The warrior god. Gwydyon was the god of magic, poetry and music.

Gwydyon was the son of Don and Beli. Gwydyon was the son of Amathon, Aranrhod, Gilvaethwy, Govannon, and Nudd. Gwydyon adopted the children of his sister Aranrhod: Dylan and Lleu.

Gwydyon served as the chief adviser of his uncle Math, king of Gwynedd, in northern Wales. He killed Pryderi in single combat over some pigs.

Gwydyon helped Lleu overcome the curses or taboos set by Lleu’s mother (Aranrhod), and rescued his nephew when he was transformed into an eagle.

From: Gwydyon

Gwydion, one of the nephews of Math ap Mathonwy, and brother of Arianrhod. He contrived Gilfaethwy’s rape of the maiden Goewin, Math’s foot holder. He did this by starting a war with Pryderi of Dyfed, stealing his pigs, and thus taking Math away on campaign. But he and Gilfaethwy doubled back and Gwydion forced the other women to leave Goewin with Gilfaethwy, who raped her. When she confessed this to Math, he levied as punishment on his nephews that they spent three years as animals, Gwydion as a stag, a wild sow, and a wolf, breeding each year with his brother Gilfaethwy who was hind, boar, and she-wolf. They produced three offspring, whom Math made human and raised at his court. Afterward, they were restored to the court. Gwydion raised Arianrhod’s virgin-born son Llew Llaw Gyffes, winning for him his name and arms by tricking his mother, and created a woman out of flowers to marry him. After that woman, Blodeuwedd, betrayed Llew to his death, Gwydion restored him to life and turned her into an owl.

Gwydion fab Dôn is a Cymric (Welsh) god known from the Mabinogi of Math mab Mathonwy and the Welsh Triads. He ranks amongst the foremost and most important of the Cymric gods. He is the arch mage, god of magic and wisdom.

(…)

Gwydion is the elder members of the Plant Dô and also the senior member of the primary triad of deities, Gwydion, Gofannon (great smith) and Amaethon (great husbander) that mark their mother Dôn as a ‘Great Mother’ archetype.

Gwydion is primarily known from the fourth branch of the Mabinogi, the tale of Math mab Mathonwy. Gwydion starts out as the foil of this tale, before emerging as its hero. He starts a war with Pryderi of Dyfed and steals the swine of Annwfn by exchanging them for gifts of steeds and greyhounds he has engendered from mushrooms. All of which is done so that his uncle Math mab Mathonwy goes to war, allowing Gwydion to aid his brother Gilfaethwy.html in raping Math’s foot-holder, Goewin. During the ensuing war Gwydion kills Pryderi and secures the magical swine of Annwfn for Math. As punishment for the rape of Goewin (whom Math marries) Gwydion and Gilfaethwy.html are turned successively into male and female deer, swine and wolves to spend a year in each form and to bear sons one upon the other. This punishment concluded and the rift between Gwydion and Math is healed.

(…)

Gwydion is the archetypal great mage; able to create animals from mushrooms, leather and boats from seaweed, a woman from flowers and able to create the illusion of an invading fleet almost at will. He is great in knowledge (which is also the literal meaning of his name). Indeed, Gwydion could be considered as the deified personification of a druid. Indeed, the Cymric form of druid, Derwydd contains the same same component Gwydd (meaning knowledge) that is also found in Gwydion’s name.

How to Identify and Get Rid of Pokeweed

Pokeweed is considered an invasive species when growing outside of the eastern half of North America, to which it is native. It is an easy plant to identify, especially when its berries ripen to their characteristic purple color in late summer. Even earlier in the season, its immense size compared to other perennial weeds is helpful in identification. If you do not have concerns about its invasiveness, it may still be wise to remove pokeweed if children or pets will be in the yard: It is toxic to both of them.1

WARNING

The berries, leaves, and roots of pokeweed are all toxic. Although the young leaves have traditionally been cooked and eaten (thus the common name, “pokesalad”), only the experienced should try this; leaves not properly prepared are toxic. In addition to being toxic to humans, pokeweed is also toxic to pets.23

While pokeweed does die back to ground level every winter, it is a difficult weed to get rid of. Winter kills off only the above-ground growth. The plant remains viable at root level and comes back every spring. Find out what you have to do to remove pokeweed successfully.

Common Names Pokeweed, common poke, pokesalad (poke sallet), pokeberry, American pokeweed, inkberry, pigeonberry, scoke
Botanical Name Phytolacca americana
Plant Type Herbaceous perennial (considered a shrub by some because of its size)
Mature Size 2 to 10 feet tall by 2 to 3 feet wide
Soil type Prefers a moist, fertile loam
Bloom Time Early summer
Flower color Greenish-white
Hardiness Zones 4 to 8 (United States)
Native Area Eastern North America from Ontario to Florida, midwestern United States

Pokeweed Invasiveness

WARNING

Pokeweed is currently on the invasive species list of only one state (California)4, but its presence has been reported in other western U.S. states. It can be considered potentially invasive throughout much of the western United States, especially the Pacific Northwest, where the moist climate is conducive to the spread of the plant. It is also listed as an invasive plant in Japan.5

Pokeweed is most closely associated with the American southeast but occurs as a native throughout the eastern half of North America (including the Midwest). It can also be found outside of its native range on the West Coast and in Arizona and New Mexico. Its range cuts across a number of USDA hardiness zones (from 3 to 10).1

While pokeweed thrives in fertile soil that remains evenly moist, it is tolerant of a wide range of conditions. It survives in full sun or partial sun and soil of average fertility; it even tolerates some drought. The main thing it needs is good drainage. Because of its flexibility, it can be found not only in the wild, but also in people’s backyards. It occurs in fields and pastures, but also in open woods and thickets. It will grow almost anywhere the ground has been disturbed, including along roads.

Pokeweed displaces native species when it grows outside its native range — the very definition of invasive. Pokeweed spreads by seed. It spreads quickly by seed due to the impact of wild birds feeding on it. Birds, immune to the toxin in pokeweed, eat the berries and spread the seed as it passes through their systems.

Avoid planting pokeweed in your yard (and do not allow pokeweed that has spread on its own to your property to remain) if children will be playing in your yard and/or dogs or cats will be let loose on your property. The toxicity of the plant makes it potentially undesirable even in cases where invasiveness is not an issue.1

What Does Pokeweed Look Like?

Except for its racemes of ripened berries, which dangle down toward the ground, pokeweed has an upright habit. These racemes can be quite large (up to 8 inches long). The berries start out green but mature to a striking dark purple. Pokeweed stands taller than most weeds, at 2 to 10 feet. When all of these characteristics are taken together, they make for a showy plant.

Pokeweed’s height is usually greater than its width. It has numerous stems. These stems are smooth, thick, and mature to a purplish color. The green, egg-shaped leaves are alternate, simple, have entire leaf margins, and emit a foul odor if bruised. The unremarkable flowers are greenish-white and begin blooming in early summer.

How to Get Rid of Pokeweed

Pokeweed is deceptively tenacious because of its herbaceous nature. What we do not realize is the reservoir of strength it holds underground. It has a thick, large taproot from which it emerges each spring. Because of this taproot, hand-pulling is not an effective method of removal: The part of the plant that you are pulling tends to break off from the taproot, from which re-sprouting will occur. If you still wish to stick with manual removal, dig the plant out (roots and all) with a shovel.

Digging the plant out will be the preferred method for those who are in good health and who garden organically. But some people do not mind using chemical herbicides. Others may not be in good enough health for digging (especially if the weed is growing in rocky and/or compacted soil). If you fall into either of these camps, you may prefer to remove pokeweed by using a weed killer.

It is easy to get rid of pokeweed permanently by spraying the leaves with a glyphosate-based solution. It is not a solution without issues, though. Glyphosate is a non-selective herbicide. That means it harms almost all vegetation that it comes into contact with. Be careful not to get any on the plants that you want to keep.

Possible health issues regarding the use of glyphosate6 make it imperative that you protect yourself while spraying by wearing gloves, goggles, long pants, long-sleeved shirt, etc.

Timing is important. Do not spray glyphosate solutions on a windy day: You want to be able to hit your target (the leaves) and nothing else. Spray pokeweed when it is actively growing (summer or early fall). Avoid spraying when rain is in the forecast, since the rain would wash the herbicide off the leaves prematurely. Glyphosate works best when vegetation has been coated with it and then strong sunshine strikes that vegetation for several hours.

You may have to spray the pokeweed more than once to remove it permanently.

Hello WoTC Family and Friends and Good Whatever Time You Read This

Back after my day off and all set to get posting again.

We have had cool temperatures yesterday and this morning which I took advantage of to work in our yard. To my surprise, with a huge thank you to my right-hand witch Graphia for inspiring me to find out about plants and trees growing in our yard, I found out I have some interesting herbs and other things growing. I had cut or mowed over most things that just looked like weeds or over growth of obnoxious trees/plants last year. This year I took the time when weeding everywhere to take a picture of things that I might want to leave growing. I used my cell/mobile phone to take pictures of leaves and the whole whatever I wants to look up than used the share and search for Google to find out if they are keepers or just regular weeds.

I did unfortunately find two Pokeberry plants growing. Google came back with they are highly poisonous and should not be touched without gloves as touching the plant in anyway can lead to the, I guess, juice from the plant entering into a person’s blood stream causing all kind of nasty things to happen. So, these plants will be destroyed tomorrow morning when I finish weeding by the back fence. I would hate for any of the wildlife or our fur kids rubbing up against it and have a bad or even mild adverse effect. Before I start on today’s regular posts for tomorrow I am doing one on this dangerous weed/plant with pictures of it.

I wish you all a good morning/afternoon/evening to have some time to relax and enjoy the out of doors.

Aries

This is going to be a romantic and entertaining day for most natives. Even those whom are single or are on the verge of a break up will have some fun this day.

You should seek ways in which to enlarge your views, from signing up for a course or getting in touch with people that could help you. You might feel that things are not going great at work but this is just a temporary situation.

Taurus

This day will probably bring you a few reasons to rejoice. It might not be anything of greater importance but sure will make your day. It might even give you the chance to gather your friends and go celebrate.

For those natives with children around, expect for the little ones to pleasantly surprise you today. Overall a good day if you pay attention to do things you really enjoy doing.

Gemini

Today you might not be on the taste of those around you because of all this sudden seriousness of yours. You are behaving almost like work obsessed and you put pressure on everyone around.

Maybe it’s not that necessary to be all grumpy and critic today. The word of advice is to observe the holiday and to try to be reasonable with those around you.

Cancer

Things are going to get heated today, romantically speaking. Be it that your mind is nowhere at work or that you are able to dedicate the whole day to dreaming with your eyes open, be sure you will probably have one person in mind for the whole day.

Those natives whom are already committed might be faced with an extra conjugal dilemma and they should resist to that temptation because it won’t bring any good.

Leo

Today will make itself remarked by its financial auspices. Be it that you are receiving a pay check as reward to your efforts or that you are taking action in a personal endeavor that is set to bring you quite some money.

However, you should think everything through and not be overly hopeful or count on money you don’t yet have as long as the deals are not closed.

Virgo

Today you might experience some quite contradictory feelings.

On one hand you are quite in a good mood and feeling able to relax and take everything just the way it comes, on the other hand your mind cannot stop stressing about work and all kinds of responsibilities and giving you a hard time whenever you try to take a break or time for yourself.

Libra

The statement of the day seems to revolve around the need of you making yourself fully understood by those around you. Maybe you feel like you’ve lost your authority at work or in front of your family.

Not talking about these feelings and letting them to boil up will eventually result in you bursting open in the most inappropriate of times so avoid unnecessary drama.

Scorpio

This is going to be quite a busy day in terms of work and your general professional development. Be it that you get the chance to work with someone that inspires you or that you change teams and find yourself in some sort of difficulty.

Be diplomatic and try to adapt because the following month will depend on the behavior you are having these days.

Sagittarius

This day will probably show you what a great moment it is for you to take a holiday. Those who are still working will be mostly affected by this disposition towards dreaming and continuous lack of concentration.

However, it might actually be a great occasion for you to have a time out and relax, recharge your batteries before the following week.

Capricorn

This announces to be a romantic day for you, be it that you are in a relationship or you are one of those singles not looking for love at all.

Even those natives that have turned their backs to love will get their share from the arrow of Cupid as it seems that everyone will be somewhat energized by a romantic vibe making them feel all attractive and charming.

Aquarius

This is going to be quite an agitated day for you, especially in your love life. Some sort of event, be it planned or unexpected will leave you all smiling and with enough reasons to rejoice for the whole day.

You should also get in contact with everyone you need to because communication will be positively influence and you will get everything right on time.

Pisces

Today you might feel like you are on your own in an important battle and like everyone is trying to escape responsibilities. Maybe it’s just your feeling or maybe people are actually avoiding you.

Most likely it’s because of you getting involved in something that is way bigger than yourself. You might also be faced with some consequences to things you’ve done some time ago.

May 16, 2023 Moon Goddess Current Phase

You can use this link to go forward or backward in time for Moon phase information. If you are curious, you can even find out what phase the Moon was in when you or anyone else was born.

From MoonGiant.com

The Moon’s current phase for today and tonight is a Waning Crescent phase. This phase is best viewed just before the sunrise in the western sky. In this phase the Moon’s illumination is growing smaller each day until the New Moon. During this part of the Moon cycle, the Moon is getting closer to the Sun as viewed from Earth and the night side of the Moon is facing the Earth with only a small edge of the Moon being illuminated. It can also be a great time to see the features of the Moon’s surface. Along the edge where the illuminated portion meets the dark side, the craters and mountains cast long shadows making them easier to observe with a telescope or binoculars.

Visit the May 2023 Moon Phases Calendar to see all the daily moon phase for this month.

Today’s Waning Crescent Phase

The Waning Crescent on May 15 has an illumination of 19%. This is the percentage of the Moon illuminated by the Sun. The illumination is constantly changing and can vary up to 10% a day. On May 15 the Moon is 25.24 days old. This refers to how many days it has been since the last New Moon. It takes 29.53 days for the Moon to orbit the Earth and go through the lunar cycle of all 8 Moon phases.

Spell – War Water Recipe and Two Protection Spells

(YOU CAN COPY AND PASTE ANY SPELLS POSTED TO A DOCUMENT TO PRINT AND/OR SAVE ON YOUR COMPUTER)

War Water Recipe

Ingredients

A jar

Water

Iron nails (if possible try to find cut iron nails)

On a Tuesday (the day of Mars) put the iron nails in the jar and fill the jar with water. Leave the nails inside the jar for at least 15 days in a cool place (preferably your refrigerator as you will prevent bacteria to be cultivated in the water). For the first 7 days leave the jar unopened and then open periodically as air will speed up the oxidation process of the nails. The secret for this recipe is oxidation.

Strain the water from the jar and use as needed. You can keep adding water to the original jar with the iron nails indefinitely and you will have an infinite supply of Water of Mars. In addition, you can summon the God Mars to bless your water with his powers.

At this time, other ingredients may be added to the mix. These ingredients might include additional iron, graveyard dirt, thorns, urine, rotting oak leaves, and/or spanish moss.

Spanish Moss is a flowering plant that grows on trees in the South. It has become a common additive in War Water. It rots well in water giving the concoction a putrid or *swampy*smell and also a nice black color, which some prefer.

To protect your home or apartment against the type of spell that is cast by placing something in the doorway or on the steps of a house, add two ounces of War Water to a mop bucket of water. Say a cleansing chant over the water to remove all negative influences from your doorway, yours steps and whatever else you intend to mop. Then mop the surfaces, wringing out the mop into another bucket. When you have finished, pour the mop water and the wringings into a street or a roadway.

Add two ounces of War Water to a mop bucket of water. Say a protection chant over the water. If you tradition involves praying to saints, you should pray in the name of St. John the Baptist. Lightly mop the house out, from top to bottom, front to back. Wring your mop into another bucket. Throw out the water and the wringings from the back door of the house if you have a back door. Rinse out the bucket and mop and pour the rinse water down the toilet. If you don’t have a back door, flush the water down the toilet and rinse out the bucket and mop and flush that water, too.

Goddesses – Mnemosyne, Greek Titan Goddess of Memory and Remembrance

Mnemosyne, Greek Titan Goddess from greek-gods.org

Mnemosyne (Mnemosine, Juno Moneta, Memory) was a Titan goddess of memory and remembrance. She was believed to be the inventress of speech and writings. In Hesiod’s Theogony, her daughters, the Muses, are described as the spirits who possessed kings and poets, whom the gods favoured and gave them special powers of authoritative speech and wisdom. Mnemosyne was one of the six daughters of primeval deities Uranus and Gaea in the first generation of Titans. Mnemosyne was also known to be a mother of Muses and represented the memorisation of stories and myths preserved in history before the discovery of writing.

The mother of Muses

Mnemosyne dwelled over the hills of Eleuther (in Pieria, near Mount Olympus) where Zeus came to lie with her for nine nights, away from other immortal gods. Together in those nine nights they gave birth to nine Muses:

Calliope – muse of epic poetry was believed to have possessed Homer and gave him inspiration for the Odyssey and the Iliad. She is often depicted as carrying a book or a writing tablet. She was also the mother of two sons by Apollo, called Linus and Orpheus. (Side Note Calliope has been helping me write since before I had my first website. Not a witchy one but for dog obedience training – really I was training humans to be kind to their companion when correcting them 😄)

Clio – muse of history. She is usually depicted of holding an open scroll or is seated beside a chest of books.

Erato – muse of love and erotic poetry. Most of the time she is depicted playing a kithara or a lyre, but in some cases she is shown with a wreath of myrtle and roses.

Euterpe – muse of music. She is often depicted sitting on a chair and playing her double flute.

Melpomene – muse of tragedy. However, she was originally a muse of singing and dancing which came from her name or more precisely from greek verb melpô (“to celebrate with dance and song.”). She is usually depicted wearing cothurnus boots(boots worn by tragic actors) and holding a tragic mask in her hand.

Polyhymnia – muse of sacred hymns. She is depicted as serious or meditative, often standing, wearing long cloak and supporting her arm with a part of the cloak.

Terpsichore – muse of dancing. Usually, she is depicted in a sitting position and playing a lyre with her special plectrum. She is also mentioned to be the mother of Sirens.

Thalia – muse of comedy. Most of the time, she is depicted holding a comic mask in her hand and wearing a cloak and a crown made of ivy.

Urania  muse of astronomy. She is depicted with a globe in her hand. Urania was believed to be able of fortelling the future by arrangement of the stars and is often associated with Universal Love and the Holy Spirit.

Gods – Coeus, Greek Titan God of Intelligence and Farsight

Coeus, Greek Titan God from greek-gods.org

Coeus (Koios, Polos) was a Titan god of intelligence and farsight, meaning that, due to his inquisitive mind and desire to learn, he was with gained knowledge and understanding able to see beyond the obvious. He was also identified as a god of wisdom and heavenly oracles. Coeus was also known as a Pillar of the north pole from which constellations revolved and, therefore, controlled the axis between Heaven and Earth. Together with his other three brothers CriusHyperion and Iapetus, they presided as the Pillars of holding Heaven and Earth apart. He was one of six sons of Uranus and Gaea and is mentioned by Apollodorus as one of the five brothers, all but Oceanus, who participated in rebellion against Uranus and later attacked him. When they overcame him, the four brothers probably held him down, while Cronus castrated him. His latin name was Polos or Polus and according to Hyginus the name Coeus was used for a giant instead of titan. They are clearly two different characters mentioned by not only Hyginus, but also by Virgil, another latin author.

Titanomachy

In the time of war Coeus fought bravely with his brothers against Olympians but was after defeat imprisoned in Tartarus like the rest of his brothers. When in Tartarus, according to Valerius Flaccus, Coeus had escaped free of his adamantine bonds and in his madness wanted to escape from the underworld and reach heavens, seeking revenge. But was in the end restrained by Cerberus, the three-headed beast, which guarded gates of Hades and prevented anyone from leaving. However, according to Aeschylus’ lost play , he was later released byZeus from Tartarus with the rest of the titans. Also, it is said by some researchers that Coeus then fled back to his north pole and became known as the north star.

Prophetic family

As mentioned above, Coeus was also a god of heavenly oracles. He was believed to be able to hear prophetic voices of his father Uranus(heaven), just like Phoebe could hear prophetic voices of her mother Gaea(earth). Together they had two daughters who inherited powers of their parents. Leto was a goddess of modesty and motherhood and was associated with prophetic power of light and heaven, while Asteria was a goddess of oracles and prophecies. She was associated with prophetic power of night and the dead. Leto represented the light time of a day, while, in contrast, Asteria represented with the night time of a day. These contrary qualities were also passed to their descendants. Apollo inherited the power of the light from his mother Leto and Hecate inherited the power of the night from Asteria.

Still there is no source with clear statement of Coeus being prophetic except having a prophetic family. Being able to predict the future in his case might have come from his intelligence and divine knowledge that he was so eager to gain from his predecessors. Perhaps that is why he was also identified as the god of wisdom. Having knowledge is one thing, but being able to truly understand it and use it for predicting future natural occurrences and events is being wise.

Moon Alert

There are no restrictions to shopping or important decisions today. The Moon is in Aries.

Aries (March 21-April 19)

If you find it hard to follow through on your plans and goals today, cut yourself some slack. You really do want to make some improvements, especially to your appearance and your physical health. However, it’s hard to summon the energy and follow-through to do anything.

Taurus (April 20-May 20)

When I was young and I put too much food on my plate, my dad used to say, “Your eyes are bigger than your stomach”. Today you might feel this way about many things. Privately, you’re gung-ho to make some sweeping changes –but who has the energy?

Gemini (May 21-June 20)

A friend or a charitable organization might inspire you to help someone in need. There’s a strong possibility that you will contribute money or share your own possessions because you feel genuine sympathy for those who have more problems than you. (Bravo!)

Cancer (June 21-July 22)

Even though you are high viz. today and people seem to know personal details about your private life; nevertheless, it will be tough to muster the energy necessary to impress others with your accomplishments. Relax. Just do what you can. This is a slo-mo day for everyone.

Leo (July 23-Aug. 22)

Today you have strong opinions when discussing controversial subjects with others. You might want to convince someone to see your way of thinking because you identify strongly with your own beliefs. This means you want to “reform” others. Don’t be too zealous.

Virgo (Aug. 23-Sept. 22)

You might want to make improvements to the way you deal with shared property or something that is jointly held. Your challenge will be to follow through on your ideas because it might be tough to convince friends or groups to go along with you. Oh well.

Libra (Sept. 23-Oct. 22)

You might attract someone to you today who has feisty, intense ideas. This could be a close friend or a partner or even a member of the general public. Although you want to put your ideas into action as well, you just don’t have the energy – not today.

Scorpio (Oct. 23-Nov. 21)

You might be keen to do something to improve your health today. Likewise, you might want to introduce reforms at work or how you do your job. However, instead your mind might drift off into never-never land planning future escapes to someplace appealing.

Sagittarius (Nov. 22-Dec. 21)

Because you feel some genuine sympathy for someone who might be going through a hard time, you’ll be generous with your time and money, and possibly the resources of someone else. (Be careful not that you don’t give away the farm.) This could relate to finding ways to benefit children or the arts.

Capricorn (Dec. 22-Jan. 19)

Today you have ideas about how to make some improvements at home, especially to areas related to garbage, recycling, laundry or bathrooms. Don’t count on help from others because their promises might not come through. You’re on your own.

Aquarius (Jan. 20-Feb. 18)

Before you step up on that soapbox to convince someone to agree with your ideas today, ask yourself if you have the energy to follow through. Initially, you might be keen to rally your troops and set them marching. Very likely, your energy will fizzle out or you’ll be distracted. (“Guilty!”)

Pisces (Feb. 19-March 20)

You might lend your energy to creative enterprises today, like sports events, fun activities with kids or more likely, ways to benefit these same areas. If so, you will have novel ideas about how to raise money and beat the bushes for some support for any cause that you want to endorse. People will listen to you today.

If Your Birthday Is Today

Actress Nicola Walker (1970) shares your birthday today. You are energetic, proud and independent. You drive yourself hard (sometimes too much so). This is the last year of a nine-year cycle, which means it’s time to let go of people, places and things that might be holding you back. Commune with nature this year.

May 15, 2023 Moon Goddess Current Phase

Goddesses – Gaea Greek Earth or Land

Greek Goddess Gaea ( Gaia ) from greekgodsandgoddesses.net

Known as both Gaia and Gaea, the Goddess Gaia is a figure from Greek mythology. Her name essentially means earth or land and shows that she was the human version of the earth. Some refer to her as the ancestral mother and claim that she gave birth to all of the elements of the world. Gaia birthed URANUS, also known as Ouranos and THE TITANS as well as other major figures such as the Gigantes and CYCLOPES. Terra is the Roman version of the goddess.

In the creation myth, CHAOS came before everything else. He was made of Void, Mass and Darkness in confusion; and then earth in the form of Gaea came into existence. From “Mother Earth” sprang the starry heavens, in the shape of the SKY GOD Uranus, and from Gaea also came the mountains, plains, seas and rivers that make up the Earth we know today.

Meaning of Her Name – Gaia/Gaea

Though some Greek gods and goddesses have names that scholars later established, Gaia’s name dates back to before Greek civilization. Her name in other languages includes Doric and Attic, but all of the names mean earth. Mycenean Greeks called her Ma-Ka or Ma-Go, both of which mean Mother Gaia.

The Titans and Earth

Gaia was the first of the immortals. She arose during the chaos period. Greeks refer to this period as the time before gods and goddesses. Christians use the same term to describe the world before God separated heaven and earth. She would become the eternal seat on Mount Olympus where all Olympians sat. Many refer to those men and women as the 12 Olympians. During the early years, many called her Mother Earth.

As soon as she arose, she took possession of Mount Olympus and began overseeing the world. TARTARUS was the next immortal and known for helping pave the earth, followed by EROS who was the god of love. After spending many years as the only creature, she became so lonely that she created Uranus. To make him happy, she gave him control over the sky and heaven. She believed that he would help and protect her. Gaia then created both PONTUS to oversee the ocean and OUREA to take over the mountains. These two beings were unique in that she created them alone and without the assistance of a father/male.

The creation of the Titans was equally as interesting. One night, the goddess and her son lay together. This resulted in the birth of CRONUS, who was the original Titan. While her other children loved and respected their mother, Cronus was different. He thought his mother was lusty and sinful. Knowing the truth behind his birth, he was often awful to her and acted out.

Other Children

As one of the more prolific goddesses in Greek mythology, Gaia had multiple children. Their births helped her become known as Mother Goddess. She and Uranus laid together a second time and sired Cyclopes. They also had Brontes and STEROPES, who became known as Thunder and Lighting along with Arges known as Bright. HECATOCHIRES, Gyges, Cottus and Briareos were other children the mother and son had together. Legend says that all three had 50 heads and 100 arms. Worried about their creation, Uranus tucked them away and hid his children from the world.

Gaia was unhappy but didn’t know to take control of the situation until she came up with a new plan. She used a piece of gray flint to create a sickle and convinced her other children to help with her plan. Uranus returned to his mother with amorous plans. He instead found Cronus who grabbed the sickle and cut off his father’s testicles. Even as his blood ran, Gaia used him to father more children. Sh bore both the MELIAE who were tree nymphs and the Giants as well as Erinyes. Many know this group as the furies. As his blood rushed into the sea, Aphrodite sprung forward.

After laying with her son Pontus, the goddess of the earth had several more children. These children include EURYBIANEREUS and CETO as well as Thaumas and PHORCYS. All of her children with this son are sea deities. This led to her connection to both the water and earth. She also had Triptolemos wit her son OCEANUS.
Cronus later became obsessed with a warning He received from both Uranus and Gaia.

They told him that he would have success in life but that one of his children would gain control over him. When he lay with Rhea who was his sister, he was so worried about what might happen that he swallowed their children immediately after she birthed them. RHEA wanted to have children. After becoming pregnant again, she went to her parents for help. They helped her protect the child and created a stone that they wrapped in cloth. Cronus thought this was his child, which gave Rhea time to escape with their actual child. This baby was ZEUS.

Years later, Zeus went to war with the Titans. Though his mother was a Titan and Gaia was the mother of the Titans, she agreed to help him. Zeus won in his battle and brought an end to the group who wanted to defeat him. Though she helped him, the earth mother and Tartarus had a son Typhon. Not only was TYPHON her last so, but he would later go up against Zeus.

Night and Day

Hyginus claimed that Gaia had a child with Sea and Heaven, which resulted in the births of AETHER and HEMERA. These two children later became known as night and Day. Another early biography of the goddess claims that she and Tartarus were the parents of ECHIDNA. Echidna was a monster who was part snake and part human. She spent much of her life living in a hidden cave and birthed some of the more popular monsters in
Greek mythology.

Gaia often appeared in different ways in early artwork. One of the oldest vase paintings from Athens depicts her as an older woman with half of her body still in the ground and a matronly figure. Other vases show her in a similar position with Erichthonius in her hands. This scene shows her giving the future king of the city to ATHENA who raised him. Other paintings show her as a more beautiful and younger woman relaxing on the ground with small gods nearby.

Gaea – Epithets and Cults

The most common epithet associated with Gaia is Anesidora, which is also one of the oldest names given to her. It means giver of gifts and shows that she gave to those in need. Others referred to her as Pandoros, Eurusternos and Calligenaia. In most stories, people followed both her and DEMETER and worshiped them equally. Some legends claim that her followers sacrificed black animals in honor of her. They would bring a white animal for the Sun and a black animal for the Earth.

Gaia Temples

As one of the more popular GREEK GODDESSES, many people worshiped Gaia and built temples in her honor. One legend claims that she was the creator of Delphi. It says that while clad as a tree, she stood in the center of town and spoke to a stone, which came to life. Before breathing life into the stone, Gaia was the original oracle. When she grew tired of the position, she appointed a nymph by the name of Daphnis to take over. A different legend claims that both Gaia and Poseidon shared the oracle. While she allowed the oracle the freedom to speak, Poseidon only allowed his to say what he wanted him to say. Her share of the oracle would later go to Apollo who eventually gave it back to POSEIDON.

There were other temples dedicated to her honor outside of Delphi. When Homer began writing GREEK MYTHOLOGY, he noted that APOLLO was in control of Delphi. He gained control after murdering Python, who was the goddess’s son. Hera was so unhappy at what he did that she banished him. Apollo worked as a shepherd for nine years before she allowed him to return.

Pausanias mentioned in his early books that there were three temples for Gaia worshippers. One was Gaion, which was a short ride from Krathis. He claimed this was the oldest of her temples and held many wooden images of her. This temple allowed women to apply for priestesses’ roles. They had to drink bull’s blood and then answer a series of questions honestly. When multiple women wanted the position, they competed in a series of challenges. The temple was unique because it allowed female priestesses who previously had relations with men as long as they were never with more than one man at a time.

Another temple designed for Gaia was in Sparta in an area known as Ge Gasepton. It was also a sanctuary of Nurse of the Young and not far from Athens. Like other temples of the time period, it had multiple altars where people could pray and worship her. Priestesses marked other areas as sacred spots designed for other gods and goddesses. EILEITHYIA had a sanctuary in Tegea that had an altar dedicated to her. There were similar altars in both Delphi and Olympia.

The connection she shared with Demeter is clear in the statues found in his temple. One of those is in Achaia and is known as the Temple of Demeter. His followers chose the location because it was in a quiet grove not far away from the ocean. When the weather was nice, followers could take long walks and enjoy their time outside. The area had both a temple to APHRODITE and one to Apollo. The Temple of Demeter has a STATUE of Demeter and Persephone along with one of Gaia. There is also a painting of her on display that shows her in a seated position.

As the mother of Zeus, it’s not surprising that some of his temples also pay homage to her. One of those is the Zeus Olympios in Athens near Kronos. It has a bronze sculpture of the god along with multiple antiques and artifacts. Inside is a portion of the floor with an open section in the middle. It originally had water that came down from the mountains. Visitors would mix honey and wheat into the water to pay their respects once a year. Deukalion built the sanctuary in honor of Zeus and added the water feature for Gaia, but it’s unknown when they did so.

Athens had another statue of the goddess that disappeared years ago. It showed Gaia standing on the Acropolis with a distraught look on her face as she begged Zeus to make it rain. The Areopagus court in Athens also had a statue of her, which was close to those of HERMES and Plouton. Near the statues was a sign that named each one.

Interpretations

There are many modern interpretations about Goddess Gaia that are different than those from the early years. Walker and Mellaart are among those who believe she has a connection to the Great Mother. During Neolithic times, followers worshiped the Great Mother and viewed her as the ultimate ideal of femininity and fertility. She often appears in sculptures and status as a seated woman with a serene look on her face. Scholars on this side believe that the Great Mother concept started in one region and made its way to ancient Greece where it became the Gaia legend.

Other experts in Greek mythology such as Staples and Ruck believe that both Demeter and Gaia were originally the same person. Some take this a step forward and add in the PERSEPHONE legend along with Hectate stories. They believe that all of the stories were originally about the same woman and that Greeks attributed them to different women later. A few books also claim that the story of Potnia came from Gaia. She was a woman known as the Mistress or the Mistress of Animals who later became associated with ARTEMIS. Potnia was a popular deity in Crete.

Mother Earth disappeared from popular mythos for many years until James Lovelock brought her back. Lovelock is a British scientist who released Gaia: A New Look at Life on Earth in 1979. This book introduced the Gaia hypothesis, which is a theory backed by other scientists. The theory claims that both inorganic compounds and living organisms on the planet must work together. Lovelock chose to name his theory after the earth goddess known as the personification of the earth. Though he won several awards for his work, he also attracted some controversy.

During the 1990s, the hypothesis gained attention from those interested in preserving the environment. They claimed that this concept would minimize the risk humans had on the world at large. New age enthusiasts also celebrated the concept.

The controversy came from those who felt it had no scientific basis. One biologist even claimed that the idea belonged in the dark ages. Others thought that humans caused more damage to the environment when they attempted to protect it. Some even thought that it went against the concepts of natural selection and evolution. Many wonder what the goddess would think about the idea if she was around today.

Quick Facts About Goddess Gaia

Gaia had more than 60 children with her sons and grandsons along with her consorts and other romantic partners.

The goddess is unique because she was born without a father and had several children on her own.

Delphi, one of the oldest and most recognizable of all oracles, was a possession of Gaia’s who she created after creating mystical vapors.

Despite the fact that she never settled down with one man, many chose her to oversee their weddings.

At least 11 of her children only occasionally appear in legends as hers. Other legends claim they had different parents.

Ancient Greeks believed that all life and elements of the earth came from her.

LETO, Uranus, Apollo and Aphrodite are among the Olympians in Gaia’s family tree.

The most common names attributed to her are Gaea and Gaia.

Gods – Uranus Greek Sky God

Uranus – God of The Sky from greekgodsandgoddesses.net

Uranus is one of the old gods in GREEK MYTHOLOGY. He was the god of the sky and the starry heavens.

He ruled the universe, and his name means sky or heaven. He literally was the sky, which the Greeks envisioned as a brass dome studded with stars. He was the husband of GAIA, or Earth. He was not only her husband, but her son.

In some stories Gaia, who is the mother of all living things, conceived him without a father. In others, the father of Uranus is Aether or CHAOS.

Together, Uranus and Gaia had many offspring, including the Titans, pre-Olympian gods and goddesses; the CYCLOPES, the one-eyed giants and the Hecatoncheires, giants who had fifty heads and one hundred hands.

According to myth, Uranus came to Gaia every night and sired the children upon her, but he disliked all of them. He considered them threats to his power. Though his Titan children could be quite beautiful, Uranus was so repelled by the sight of the HECATONCHEIRES that he tried to push them back into Gaia’s womb, which caused her terrible pain. Eventually, Uranus imprisoned the Cyclopes and the Hecatoncheires in TARTARUS, a gloomy place that lay beneath the Earth or Hades.

This caused Gaia to resent Uranus even more, and she plotted with her Titan children to at least overthrow him, since Uranus was immortal and couldn’t be killed. Only her youngest son Cronus agreed to the plot, because he wanted to replace his father as leader of the gods. Gaia fashioned a sickle of flint and gave it to him.

One night, when Uranus came to Gaia, his sons ambushed him and held him down while Cronus used the sickle to castrate him. He threw both the sickle and Uranus’ genitals into the sea. The blood from the mutilation fell on the earth and gave rise to the GIGANTES, or Giants; the ash tree nymphs called THE MELIAE and the Furies, or THE ERINYES. Some myths claim that the Telchines, gods who settled the isle of Rhodes, were also born at this time. The goddess APHRODITE arose from the genitals that were tossed into the sea.

The Giants were not necessarily large, but they were very aggressive and fought the OLYMPIAN GODS. The Meliae helped to raise Cronus and Rhea’s son ZEUS after Rhea needed to hide him from Cronus, who would have swallowed him as he’d swallowed Zeus’ other brothers and sisters.

Celtic Month of the Hawthorn Moon May 13 – June 9

Huath, Huathe

H – the hawthorn represents the sixth letter of the ogham alphabet and the sixth month on the Celtic tree calendar, the last weeks of May, when the hawthorn blossom is in flower.

Hawthorn Tree

The Hawthorn is a prickly sort of plant with beautiful blossoms. Called Huath by the ancient Celts, and pronounced Hoh-uh, the Hawthorn month is a time of fertility, masculine energy, and fire. Coming right on the heels of Beltane, this month is a time when male potency is high — if you’re hoping to conceive a child, get busy this month! The Hawthorn has a raw, phallic sort of energy about it — use it for magic related to masculine power, business decisions, making professional connections. The Hawthorn is also associated with the realm of Faerie, and when the Hawthorn grows in tandem with an Ash and Oak, it is said to attract the Fae.

Hawthorn – the Fairy Tree from ireland-calling.com

The Hawthorn is Known in Ireland as the fairy tree. It is often referred to as the gentle bush, lone bush or thorn, as it is disrespectful to mention the fairies by name.

As it is considered a fairy tree, it is believed to be extremely bad luck to cut one down, remove branches, or even hang things upon it (except at Beltane when this was customary) in case you disturb the little folk.

This belief has survived into modern times.

In 1999 work was interrupted on the main road from Limerick to Galway because a fairy tree stood in its path. The road had to be rerouted and construction was delayed for 10 years.

In 2009 there were numerous sightings of an ancient ghost thought to reappear in Tyrone after the felling of a fairy tree.

Few people will speak of the fairy tree out of a mixture of fear and respect and even fewer would ever remove or damage a hawthorn standing alone.

Couples fell in love under the hawthorn blossom

Contrary to these beliefs, in Britain, the hawthorn was associated with love and springtime, as the warm weather of May would bring couples together under the sweet blossoms of the hawthorn.

Hawthorn branches hung above a door were believed to protect from evil spirits rather than incurring their wrath.

In ancient Greece, likewise, the hawthorn was associated with love and marriage. Hawthorn crowns were worn by brides as decorative headwear and a hawthorn branch would be used as a wedding torch, perhaps where the phrase ‘carry a torch for’ comes from, meaning to love or have strong feelings for.
