Oi/Oir

Oi, sometimes representing the Th sound, is Oir, the Spindle tree, which was used to make bobbins and pegs, as well as (obviously) spindles. This dainty little tree is misleading–while it looks delicate, it’s also very strong. The durability and strength of the wood made it useful for oxen-goads, which were used in ploughing. The white flowers and bright red autumn fruits, connect the Spindle tree to the hearth and home, as well as the bonds of kinfolk and clan.

Two

Considered the most cooperative of the single-digit numbers, the 2 is often the most underestimated.

Celtic Shield Knot

The Celtic shield knot is used for warding and protection. Shield knots have appeared in cultures around the world and have taken a variety of different forms. They are almost universally square in shape, and the knotwork of the design ranges from simple to complex. In the Celtic version, a series of knots is formed. In other cultures, such as the early Mesopotamian era, the shield is simply a square with a loop at each of the four corners.

Fans of Celtic artwork occasionally get variations of this piece as tattoos or wear them as talismans of protection. In modern Celtic reconstructionist groups, the shield knot is sometimes invoked as a ward to keep negative energy away. In some traditions, the corners of the knot are meant to represent the four elements of earth, air, fire, and water, although it’s important to note that Celtic spirituality is usually based upon the three realms of earth, sea, and sky.

Baby dragons are hatching out of a nest floating on the waters of a gentle stream below a waterfall. One hatched baby is looking at her reflection in the water, while another leans contently against her. A third baby is struggling out of its shell, while a fourth is settling itself for a peaceful nap. All humans, at whatever stage of life, begin their seeking for spiritual and/or emotional growth and knowledge with the naivete and innocence of children. They are innocent of the difficulties and perils that might lie ahead and at the same time enthusiastic to get started on their journey. Some get caught up in admiring themselves and what they believe they can do, while others are content just to bask in the sunlight and lean on others. Uhr/Ura

U (sometimes W) is Uhr or Ura, the Heather plant, which symbolizes passion and generosity. This ground-covering plant grows on top of peat in the moors of the Celtic lands. The blossoms are full of rich nectar and are very attractive to bees, which are seen in some traditions as messengers to and from the spirit world. Uhr is associated with both generosity and healing, as well as contact with the Otherworld.

Historically, the Picts used the flowers of the Heather plant to make a fermented ale–the natural sweetness of the plant probably made this delicious! It is also known to bring good fortune, particularly the white variety of Heather. A number of Scottish clansmen tucked Heather in their bonnets before going into battle. From a practical standpoint, Heather was also harvested to use for thatching. Dyes and brooms were made from it as well; if you make a besom of your own, use some Heather for the bristles.

Medicinally, Heather has been used to treat everything from consumption to “agitated nerves.” The great Scottish poet Robert Burns advocated its use in “Moorland Tea,” brewed from the harvested flowers.

The 5 is unpredictable, always in motion, and constantly in search of change.

Although it is molded from an almost equal mix of freedom-loving and loyal characteristics, the 5 is slightly more daring, and there is nothing submissive about it.

The 5 is extremely independent in mind and soul.

For an adventurer and risk-taker who has a hard time staying in one place, one job, or one relationship, the 5 is surprisingly loyal when the right partner comes along.

Spell for Thursday – Breaking Spells

Breaking Spells – Candle Pentagram

You’ll need to set this spell out on a table or altar space that won’t be disturbed for the duration of the spell. Your supplies are:

  • Salt (fine, not coarse)
  • 5 white candles
  • Rosemary (oil or herbs)

On your table, sprinkle a fine line of salt to draw a pentacle. It doesn’t have to be perfect but try to get it somewhat symmetrical. At each point of the star, add a few drops of rosemary oil or a sprinkle of dry rosemary (yes, right on the table top). Then set 1 white candle at each point.

Light each candle, starting with the one at the top. After each one, say the words:

By the dark and the light
Your spell ends tonight

Let the candles burn for one hour, then snuff them out. Do the same thing the next time, except let them burn all the way out.

Leave the candle stubs in place for another 5 days, so the entire spell is in place for a week. After that, any negative magick against you will be gone.

If curse breaking spells aren’t exactly what you are looking for, there are banishing spells or binding spells that might be more suitable for your situation.

Straith/Straif

This symbol, used for the sound St, is Straith (sometimes seen as Straif), the Blackthorn tree. A symbol of authority and control, the Blackthorn is connected to strength and triumph over adversity. Blackthorn is a tree (although some might argue it’s more of a really big shrub) of winter, and its berries only ripen after the first frost. White flowers appear in the spring, and the bark is black and thorny.

On a medicinal level, Blackthorn berries–sloe berries–are brewed to make a tonic (this is what Sloe Gin is made from). The tonic can be used as a laxative and/or diuretic, as well as a skin astringent. In folklore, the Blackthorn has a fairly unpleasant reputation. An English legend refers to a devastating winter as a “Blackthorn Winter.” It also represents the darker side of magic and witchcraft. Because it’s a plant that becomes hardy when all around it is dying, it is associated with the Dark Mother, the Crone aspect of the Goddess, particularly the Cailleach in some parts of Scotland and Ireland. There is also a strong connection to the Morrighan, because of Blackthorn’s association with the blood and death of warriors. In fact, in early Celtic culture, the Blackthorn was popular for its use in the cudgel shillelagh.

The Oak King – Major Arcana

The Oak King hangs upside down by his heel, which is wedged between branches of an oak tree. He is comfortable, casual, and relaxed as he contemplates his vital role within the infinite passage of time, tracing on the ground below him the perpetual cosmic lemniscate within the circle of the year. His position reflects the infinity symbol as he anticipates the familiar cycle of change, when the Oak King transitions into the unborn infant within the womb of Mother Earth, surrendering his reign to himself as the Holly King, the Sage who will rule until the Oak King is reborn at Yule.
