The Hanged Man
Friday, Nov 29th, 2013
Traditionally, the card known as the Hanged Man usually indicates a lack of ability to help oneself through independent action. This energy is arrested and awaiting judgment. With this card, there is no avenue for the will to regain control until the situation has passed.
This represents a good time to be philosophical, to study and meditate upon the position you find yourself in, and form resolutions for the moment you become free again. Only those who possess wisdom, patience and optimism will be able to see through limitations, including possible humiliation, to grasp the inspiring lesson one can gain from such an experience.
Sharing our feelings is easy today, yet they could become difficult to manage anyway. Concentrate on the highest potential in any interaction instead of imagining problems now. Thankfully, the peaceable Libra Moon helps us all get along. But taking things beyond the conversational stage grows tricky as the willful Sun forms a complex quintile with physical Mars. We may run out of words once the Moon slips into secretive Scorpio at 11:02 pm EST.
(Mar 21 – Apr 19)
You may go out of your way to communicate your desires today, but you could take things to an extreme. People might even grow annoyed if you aren’t willing to meet them halfway. Fortunately, your good intentions should be enough to smooth over any ruffled feathers. But others won’t be able to hold a grudge if you simply tell the truth with kindness. You really don’t have to negotiate away your need for independence. Just remember you can still be considerate while honoring your integrity.
(Apr 20 – May 20)
Being able to trust your friends means the world to you. Even if you disagree about something important today, it’s better if everyone openly shares what’s on their minds. However, your tendency to gloss over difficult emotions now can create problems down the road. Take extra time to check in with your heart to make sure that you know what you want, even if it’s inconvenient. Being completely honest paves the way to true intimacy.
(May 21 – Jun 20)
Giving up on a good idea today sounds easier than it is, even if you know you cannot add one more item to your list of tasks. The lingering positive energy from yesterday’s easygoing Mercury-Jupiter trine continues to remove obstacles from your path and increases your optimism. However, your resources are limited and you could exhaust yourself trying to deliver on all your promises. Paring back your activities optimizes your efficiency and improves your chances for success.
(Jun 21 – Jul 22)
It’s easier to talk about what you’re capable of doing today than it is to actually follow through with decisive actions and get concrete results. Accordingly, it may be smarter to spend your day engaging in meetings, making phone calls and writing emails, rather than executing your plans. Networking with potential supporters now can help you develop an effective strategy. Figure out the best way to reach your goals and prepare to make your move.
(Jul 23 – Aug 22)
You’re feeling on edge today because you know that something big is brewing but you can’t yet tell what’s around the next bend. Although your positive attitude works in your favor, you’re also worried that you aren’t in complete control of your destiny. Fortunately, you have more stability now than you realize, so just let the current events flow without trying to direct every single outcome. Trust the universe and let the Force be with you.
(Aug 23 – Sep 22)
You may believe that anything you can imagine is possible. Although clever Mercury is beginning to settle down today, your thoughts are still flying all over the place. Just remember that you’re not invincible, so don’t fill up your life with plans based on unrealistic dreams. Reach for the stars, but don’t lose sight of your valuable common sense. There’s nothing wrong with setting ambitious goals now as long as you also keep your feet firmly planted on the ground.
(Sep 23 – Oct 22)
You would love to get by with less hard work now that the reflective Moon is back in your sign. However, you could end up wasting precious time and energy today if you believe that an ingenious shortcut will get you to where you’re going faster than taking the tried and true path. But these days your most reliable approach comes from setting a manageable pace early in the day and then sticking with it as best as you can. Slow and steady wins the race.
(Oct 23 – Nov 21)
You’re feeling your oats today because mischievous Mercury in your sign harmonizes with joyful Jupiter in your 5th House of Fun and Games. You might not be able to forget about all the serious issues in your life, but at least you can put them into a healthy perspective that allows you to have a good time no matter what else is going on. Ultimately, the choice is yours; either focus on all the uncertainty or make a temporary escape and enjoy the power of now.
(Nov 22 – Dec 21)
You still have secrets to keep, yet it may be a struggle to remain quiet for much longer. Nevertheless, it’s more important to honor your commitments, even if you feel comfortable enough to spill the beans. You might be able to see the positive side of sharing everything you know, but it’s not your decision to make now. Take the high road and don’t stir up any unnecessary trouble yet; wait a few days until the Moon is back in your sign before reconsidering your options.
(Dec 22 – Jan 19)
Engaging in small talk is just a waste of time today; you’re eager to dig into the core of the matter. You aren’t interested in acting diplomatically now, even if you realize that it can help you obtain what you want. Thankfully, your friends and associates appreciate your direct and honest approach, so follow your instincts and get down to business without beating around the bush. The early bird gets the worm.
(Jan 20 – Feb 18)
The most boring tasks can morph into lots of fun if you only adjust your perspective. Luckily, the potential for sudden change is still growing. Unpredictable Uranus is in the spotlight today, shocking you with new and exciting experiences — even if you have routine responsibilities to handle before you move on to the more pleasurable stuff. Stay focused and get your work out of the way quickly so you have time to expand your horizons by pursuing other interests that bring you personal satisfaction.
(Feb 19 – Mar 20)
You appear very positive today, even if you’re holding some doubt in reserve while you vacillate between optimism and worry. However, others won’t likely sense your uncertainty, especially if you think it’s to your advantage to hide your lack of confidence. Ultimately, it’s in your best interest if you can find enough courage to share your fears with someone you trust, for they will most likely dissipate once you’ve given them voice.
Weekend Love Horoscopes
November 29 to December 1: Love Potion
With the Moon in sultry Scorpio you’ll crave emotional depths in love. With Scorpio there’s nothing superficial and certainly nothing halfway. Either you’re “all-in” when it comes to an affair, or you’re just not interested. Fortunately, the Moon will make fantastic aspects all weekend, supporting the best of what Scorpio has to offer rather than activating his shadowy and sometimes controlling side.
First, on Saturday there will be a trine to Neptune and a sextile to Pluto. This will encourage you and your mate to explore your passionate fantasies in a way that makes both of you feel secure, rather than vulnerable. In addition, the Sun will be at a trine to Uranus on Saturday, offering a burst of sudden vitality and innovative energy to shine a light on whatever it is about your relationship that is most unique. Don’t worry about your love thinking you’re eccentric … this is actually how you’ll win him or her over.
Then, on Sunday, the Moon will make supportive links to Saturn, Jupiter, Venus, Mercury and Mars. WHEW — that’s half of the zodiac all rallying to boost Scorpio’s potential for intimacy and soul-binding erotic moments. This weekend, when it comes to love, the universe has your back.
Despite a fairly favorable 72-hour time-span — offering humanity a lot of opportunities for forward progress during Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday just past — the last 48 hours of this month seem more stormy than calm. The Moon in Libra square to Venus in Capricorn (3:15AM) equates with a rise in emotional turmoil, and this 90-degree face-off is given extra intensity as it starts a void lunar uncertainty zone that lasts until 8:04PM. During this 16+ hour lunar limbo time-span, moody behavior may be more rampant than usual as Juno in Aquarius squares Saturn in Scorpio (5:25AM) while Mars forms a contra-parallel with Chiron (7:34AM). The Juno-Saturn clash is hard to sugar coat as it suggests a rise in temporary rude behavior — possibly affecting lovers as well as business associates and partners. The Mars-Chiron interaction is another forceful challenge that can heighten dis-empowerment — especially emotionally and mentally — in key relationships across the board. One saving grace — happening several hours later — is an inspirational, 72-degree tie from the Sun to Mars (1:26PM). However, this lone, favorable aspect doesn’t have the gravitas to counteract the three discordant aspects already spreading discontent like a virus. A type of panacea arrives tonight when the Moon ceases to be void as it enters intense Scorpio (8:04PM) for the next 2+ days. Watch your dreams overnight for clues about the future as the Moon trines Neptune in water signs at 12:40AM tomorrow. [Note to readers: All times are calculated for Pacific Standard Time. Be sure to adjust all times according to your own local time so the alignments noted above will be exact for your location.]
Calendar of the Moon
Dark Moon Night
Altar: Upon a black cloth set a single black candle, incense, an iron sickle laid to mimic the direction of the waning moon, a cup of water, a lock of silver hair, and a white bone.
Offerings: Bones. Stones. Menstrual blood. Give something up.
Daily Meal: Soup of some sort, cooked in a cauldron, eaten in silence.
Dark Moon Invocation
At this time, in the dark of the moon,
When the Silver Lady ages
To an old woman in the dark,
Haunting crossroads, working magic,
Stirring her cauldron
Of poison that heals,
Grandmother Moon of sorcery
And wisdom, who sees all
And reveals little to our searching eyes.
Moon of Death, Moon of mystery,
Moon of silence who hides her face,
Let us learn silence from your averted gaze
Let us learn patience from your aging face
Let us feel for the dark places within us
And find our way down your path in the darkness
Which is utter and complete
But not impenetrable.
As darkness wraps us,
So silence heals us.
As darkness finds us,
So silence guides us.
As darkness speaks,
So silence falls.
(The candle is blown out, and all leave in silence. From the beginning of this rite at Hesperis until the dawn, silence will rule in the house. Talking must be done only in whispers, and between no more than two people, and only for that which is necessary. Long meditation is encouraged, and all work must be done quietly if possible. The evening meal should be eaten by candlelight, and only candles may light the house, except for the sake of certain important work.)
Calendar of the Sun
Altar: Upon a red cloth set two torches, the figure of a lioness, and a clay pitcher of beer mixed with red fruit juice.
Offerings: Meat. Blood. Wrestle with the Beast Within.
Daily Meal: Beer. Meat from a hoofed animal. Barley.
Invocation to Sekhmet
Long, long ago, Ra Lord of the Sun
Was wroth with the people of the earth,
For their disrespect and their carelessness,
And his anger was so great
That he called forth into existence
The lioness goddess Sekhmet
As a manifestation of his wrath,
And he set her upon the people,
Intending her to eat a few of them
And teach them all a lesson.
And Sekhmet leaped upon them,
But she did not stop her destruction,
And after three days she had killed so many
That Ra begged her to stop, regretting his error,
But she refused, saying that there would be no end
To her appetite for blood and death.
So Ra had beer dyed red as blood, and spread it
Over the field of carnage, and she drank,
And fell asleep, and was enspelled.
And so we hail Sekhmet, for within each of us
Is the beast of wrath whom we must propitiate,
And never let run wild, lest it slay
All that we hold dear. Hail Sekhmet!
(All respond: “Hail Sekhmet!” )
Be merciful to us, we who cower
In your shadow, and feel your footprints within us.
(All respond: “Have mercy upon us!”
And may your hunting be plentiful,
And all your days bright with sun.
(All respond: “Hail Queen of the Desert Sun!” Then the red beer is poured as a libation, and the torches are carried outside, where they are left to burn out.)
(waning /24% illumination)
This is a time to rest, reevaluate and reflect, pulling back into yourself to reconnect with inner sources of strength. Now is not a time to initiate anything new. It’s a phase suited to spending time with friends and getting in touch with the “big picture.” A window of opportunity exists for seeing your life objectively and becoming aware of what is important to you. At this point, what are your dreams and aspirations? What larger goals can you aspire to that will bring vitality and excitement into your life? This is a time for resting and gaining inner strength to prepare for a new cycle.
Waning Moon Prayer
I call upon you Hecate
My words I ask you harken
For your waning moon is in the sky
Her silver shine be darken…
As you ride her silver crest
Deep into the night,
Take with you the powers of my words
When upon I see her newborn light
I’ll know my spell has been heard.
So Mote It Be
Use to increase power and use it wisely.
You will need:
High John the Conqueror oil
The best time to cast this spell is at midnight on a Full Moon, but if you don’t want to stay up that late, you can work it at any point on the Full Moon night or on a Sabbat.
Since you are asking to draw in power, be sure you are firmly grounded and centered before casting this spell and that the space you are working in is protected. Unlike some of the spell where it makes little difference whether or not you start by casting a formal cycle, in this case you should do so. This is not a spell to take lightly.
Cast your circle, ask for help from the four quarters, invoke the triple Goddess of your choice, then anoint the candle with the High John Oil. Be sure you are centered before reciting the spell. As my craft I work to hone At this deep and sacred hour I call on Maiden, Mother, Crone To send me wisdom, strength and power. Lend me power for my spells Power for work and power for play Send wisdom so I’ll use it well Growing in power every day. So Mote It Be
When you finish saying the spell, visualize power and energy spilling down the moonlight and into your body. Stay in the circle for as long as it takes to feel done. Then be sure to say thank you before dismising the circle.
Let’s Talk Witch – Sanctifying the Temple of the Body
Of all the spaces that surround us, of all the blessings we send out into the world, of all the things we honor and consider sacred, it is often our own bodies that are most in need of honor and celebration. Considered by many to be the vehicle through which our soul experiences the physical world, our bodies are indeed worthy of recognition as the spiritual temples they are. Too frequently we focus on our perceived physical imperfections, forget the miracle of the body’s ability to heal itself when we are ailing, or take for grannted the fragile balance our bodies need to sustain us, instead choosing to abuse ourselves with excess, deprive ourselves of adequate sleep or nourishing food, and engage in other physically and psychologically damaging behaviors.
For women especially, how we carry ourselves and think about our body is incredibly emotionally charged. We are constantly being bombarded with messages telling us how we are suppose to look and what we are supposed to wear. Women’s bodies have been objectified by a culture that has also programmed us to believe they are objects of sin and shame. Reclaiming the sacred nature of our physical form is a service both to our selves and to our sisters—it is a rejection of the old paradigm and a reframing of how women think about themselves on their own terms.
There is a Hermetic Axiom that states: “As above, so below. As within, so without.” One treatment and reverence for our body both reflects upon, and is a reflection of, the spirit that dwells within. How can you bring a sense of the sacred to your physical self? Perhaps you can incorporate a daily routine of self-anointing with oils you have blessed for this purpose and chosen to consciously eat wholesome foods to power your body-temple. Indulge in sacred spa days and pamper yourself with a luxurious bath scented with herbs and flowers that stimulate the essence of the Divine within. Wear colors and styles that reflect your personality and make you feel beautiful, rather than feeling like a slave to the trends of fashion. Adorn yourself with stones and symbolic jewelry that serve as reminders of your holy nature. And, perhaps most importantly, support other women in cultivating a sense of the self as sacred: discourage self-deprecating remarks, do not engage in disempowering body behaviors, and praise your sisters and brothers as the beautiful and perfect being they are.
While it’s useful and beneficial to create a physical sacred space, such as a hearth or garden, creating sacred space within yourself may be the best thing you can do for your spirit.

Black Friday 2013
That the day after Thanksgiving is the “official” start of the holiday shopping season may be linked together with the idea of Santa Claus parades. Parades celebrating Thanksgiving often include an appearance by Santa at the end of the parade, with the idea that ‘Santa has arrived’ or ‘Santa is just around the corner’ because Christmas is always the next major holiday following Thanksgiving.
In the late 19th and early 20th centuries, many Santa or Thanksgiving Day parades were sponsored by department stores. These include the Toronto Santa Claus Parade, in Canada, sponsored by Eaton’s, and the Macy’s Thanksgiving Day Parade sponsored by Macy’s. Department stores would use the parades to launch a big advertising push. Eventually it just became an unwritten rule that no store would try doing Christmas advertising before the parade was over. Therefore, the day after Thanksgiving became the day when the shopping season officially started.
Later on, the fact that this marked the official start of the shopping season led to controversy. In 1939, retail shops would have liked to have a longer shopping season, but no store wanted to break with tradition and be the one to start advertising before Thanksgiving. President Franklin D. Roosevelt moved the date for Thanksgiving one week earlier, leading to much anger by the public who wound up having to change holiday plans. Some even refused the change, resulting in the U.S. citizens celebrating Thanksgiving on two separate days. Some started referring to the change as Franksgiving.
