Here’s the line-up for this week: The Sun and Mercury are in Sagittarius (described last week). Venus is in Scorpio, and Mars is still in Aries. You might recall that Mars is normally in Aries only once every two years for just six weeks. This year, Mars is in Aries for six months! (Whaaat?) It was retrograde from Sept. to Nov. 13, which was hellish for everyone. (Those who are reading this have survived.) At last, Mars now moves forward now and will finally leave Aries on Jan. 6. Meanwhile, our fated Capricorn trio of Jupiter, Saturn and Pluto will soon end. In mid-Dec, both Jupiter and Saturn line up in Aquarius! (It’s a big deal.) Aries (March 21-April 19)

This is a good week to make future plans about education, publishing, manuscripts, important writing projects, the media and anything to do with medicine and the law. November 16 Moon Goddess’ Current Phase

Today the Moon will be in a Waxing Crescent Phase. A Waxing Crescent is the first Phase after the New Moon and is a great time to see the features of the moon’s surface. Nevertheless, people are reaching out to you and you are keen to talk to them. You also are happy to get involved with groups and associations. Interaction with younger people is likely. In fact, things are so cozy, some of you might turn a platonic friendship into a flirtation. (Desperate times call for desperate measures.) One bit of good news is that since August, issues at home and within your family have been confusing and demanding. Now you will find that your home scene moves forward with more focus and clarity. This is a relief!

Aquarius (Jan. 20-Feb. 18)

For one more week, the Sun will be at the top of your chart casting you in a flattering spotlight, which makes you look fabulous in the eyes of others, especially bosses, parents and VIPs. Enjoy this advantage and make the most of it! Meanwhile, Mercury at the top of your chart will encourage discussions with bosses and important people; while, Venus will attract people who will help you with your work. In fact, Venus will make you look so attractive to others that some of you might begin a romance or a flirtation with a boss. Venus will also encourage others to see your creative talents, which is why someone will ask for your advice about layout, design, furniture arrangement – something like that.

Pisces (Feb. 19-March 20)

You still have a strong urge to get outta Dodge or do something to expand your world. If you cannot travel (and so many of us cannot at this time), you might use this same energy to explore opportunities in publishing, the law, the media or something to do with medicine and higher education. These are all beneficial areas for you right now. In fact, it will be interesting to study and learn something. Likewise, it will easy to finish an important paper or manuscript. In the next few weeks, you will want to explore something “different” and this could trigger a romance with someone from another culture. (Great way to learn a new language!) This year Jupiter and Pluto line up three times and the final time is this week. The last time Jupiter and Pluto lined up in Capricorn (like this year) was in 1771 during the Russian plague and the American Revolution of 1765-1783. This conjunction in Capricorn will call attention to the growing need to reform economic imbalances and address the oppression by structures – of the government, the police, military, medical, legal or that of society. Speaking of structures, this includes the human skeleton as well, which has been in the closet for too long. I know this is not a jaw-dropping observation. (“You’ve got tibia kidding!”) Read on to learn how this conjunction affects your sign.

Aries (March 21-April 19)

This has been a tough year because extremely unusual planetary happenings have been going on at odds with your Sun in Aries. This has made life difficult. Mostly, this has affected your long-term goals, your standing in the community and your public reputation (both professionally and among your peers). You might have been forced to defend yourself or your public reputation or the respect that you deserve. Because Mars has been in your sign for the last six months of the year (this last occurred in 1988), it has been a mixed blessing. Initially, it pumped your energy; but since Sept., it has eroded your self-confidence. Fear not, later this month, you’ll be back in the saddle!

Taurus (April 20-May 20)

Gemini (May 21-June 20)

This year, the triple conjunction of Pluto and Jupiter along with the Saturn, Pluto conjunction took place in one of your Money Houses. This called attention to your debt, and anything that you share jointly with partners or other people. For example, it would become apparent to you how important it is to get out of debt. Likewise, any issues related to inheritances, wills and shared property would be highlighted in a way that you would see how reforms need to be made or how they could have been handled better. For some of you, it’s too late. For others, this is a wake-up call. Again however, lucky Jupiter will attract some goodies your way!

Cancer (June 21-July 22)

Four signs have had it tough this year and you are one of them. (Aries, Cancer, Libra and of course, Capricorn!) To put a finer point on it, those signs that were born mid-month (the 12th to the 15th) ) had it the hardest! You know who you are. For Cancers, all this unusual planetary activity took place, and is still taking place, directly opposite your sign, which means has impacted you the most with partnerships and close friendships. Many of you ended partnerships this year (or wanted to). In addition, your ambition to achieve your dreams was blowing hot and cold. This summer, you were ready to act. But recently, you have been spinning your wheels. This month that changes!

Leo (July 23-Aug. 22)

The triple conjunction of Jupiter and Pluto (plus the conjunctions of Saturn and Pluto) have been unusual, which is why 2020 is such a challenging year. For Leos, this activity has affected your pet, your job and your health. This means whatever needed to be fixed in these areas now came to a climax. You could no longer ignore what you might have been ignoring. This year you had to act. What has helped your sign is this unusual journey of Mars in Aries for six months (which last happened in 1988) because this has pumped you with energy and confidence! It has helped you achieve a lot in the last half of this year, despite the necessary reforms you face in your job and your health.

Virgo (Aug. 23-Sept. 22)

This year we are all reeling from the lineup of planets in Capricorn. For your sign, this points out where you need to make improvements or reforms to get a better handle of dealing with kids as well as anything to do with sports, the entertainment world and the hospitality industry. Many of you are being forced to see how you need to balance work and play in your life. Another area that has been impacted by these planetary configurations is romance. Romance might have been all over the map for you this year. Sublime and painful. Many of you have lost your possessions. (It’s been a sobering year.) Fortunately, the six-month sojourn of Mars in Aries has boosted your energy. This year has been full of challenges; but to a casual observer, it doesn’t look this way (for many of you). This is because the challenges that you face are “hidden”. Pisces (Feb. 19-March 20)

Perhaps the biggest area where you have been impacted by the triple conjunction this year of Jupiter and Pluto, in addition to the conjunction of Saturn and Pluto, has been regarding friendships and your relationship to clubs, groups and organizations. Many of you have either suddenly left friendships or slowly drifted away and moved on. (It happens.) Likewise, you have left groups and clubs or joined new ones that embrace concepts that speak to you. On Nov. 3, the day of the US election, Mercury retrograde will end becoming what astrologers call “stationary direct.” This means it hovers in the same degree for two days before moving forward again. (Note: in reality a planet never slows down or goes backwards, this is an illusion relative to planet Earth.) The last time that Mercury stationed direct on a US presidential election was in 2000, when Al Gore won the popular vote but George W. Bush took office. Fortunately, Mercury will be in the sign of Libra, which promotes balanced fair play. Nevertheless, expect delays and confusion perhaps due to uncounted mail-in ballots and demands for recounts? (Personally, I wonder if it’s time we got rid of democracy? All in favour raise your hand.)

Aries (March 21-April 19)

Your ruler Mars has been retrograde in your sign since Sept. causing confusion, indecision and self-doubt. Fear not however, because it will go “direct” on Friday the 13th. (Would I make this up?) After that, things will improve! And when Mars catches up to where it was when it first went retrograde (28 degrees) at the end of Dec., your life will improve even more! After that, you will move forward with strong energy. Meanwhile, this week, Mercury retrograde will end, sitting directly opposite your sign, which will make conversations with partners and close friends eventful. Expect meaty discussions, probably about shared property and inheritances. Fortunately, Venus will keep things friendly.

Taurus (April 20-May 20)

Mercury retrograde has attracted ex-partners and old friends back into your world; plus, it has created delays and goofy errors in your work, your job and possibly with something that is health-related or related to a pet. This part has been a drag. But hey, you’ll be happy to know that this is over as of this week. Yay! Almost immediately, you will see these delays and goofy errors reduce back to a normal level. Meanwhile, you will still need more sleep. (You cannot ignore this.) Venus will promote your relations with work colleagues. It will also nicely boost your health, although it will increase temptations to fattening, sweet foods. Avoid thirds on desert.

Gemini (May 21-June 20)

This continues to be a productive time for you because you’re determined to be more efficient than usual, which is why you are putting a lot of effort to get better organized in your world, especially your job. Many of you will have to work on behalf of others more than usual – to perform a service of some sort. (It’s a joy to labour for those you love.) When Mercury stops being retrograde this week, this will encourage you to go forward with creative ideas, especially working with kids and activities related to sports and the arts! New romance might flourish for some of you because it’s easy to get along with loved ones now. (There’s no need to pretend to be what you are not.)

Cancer (June 21-July 22)

This is a lighthearted, fun-loving time! Relationships are lighter, especially with children. Basically, you want to do what you want to do and set your own priorities. It’s a good time to be yourself and also to be conscious of who you are. Family discussions and home repairs, as well as chances to redecorate or make where you live more attractive are also on the menu. Marriages and partnerships have truly been tested this year, and those that have outlived their usefulness have ended. Having said that, you are a sign that is loath to let go of anything (including people), which means you often stay in the wrong relationship too long. (You know who you are.)

Leo (July 23-Aug. 22)

Home and family continue to be your priority; and many of you will be involved with a parent more than usual. Mercury retrograde has created delays and goofy errors in your daily schedule, which means you’ll be happy to know that Mercury retrograde ends this week. (Note: Its shadow continues until Nov. 10. If you are making a big purchase like a car or computer, wait until after that date.) This means silly errors will reduce and that’s a relief! (Less frustration.) Because Venus has now moved into your House of Communications, you will see how much love there is in your daily life. In addition, you will also be grateful for the beauty of your daily surroundings more than usual. Sweet!

Virgo (Aug. 23-Sept. 22)

Your fast pace continues with appointments, time with siblings and relatives, short trips plus increased reading, writing and studying. You are keen to communicate to others because you want to enlighten them about something. Financial matters look solid. You might attract money or financial advantages to you. Mercury retrograde will end in your House of Earnings, which might cause you to focus on something related to your assets. Many of you had had challenges wrapping up issues related to shared property and inheritances. This delay will cease in a few weeks. This is a good week to tell someone how you feel about something.

6 Famous Curses and Their Origins

Dig into the superstitions that surround King Tut’s tomb, the Hope Diamond and more.

Throughout history, people have promoted stories of curses for a variety of reasons. To sports fans, curses can help explain their favorite team’s loss. When a cause of death is misunderstood, curses can provide an explanation. For an imperial nation, curses can betray anxiety about being punished for colonizing and taking artifacts. And sometimes, curses come about because someone just wanted to make up a story.

Here are some prominent curses in history.

1. King Tut’s Curse (and Other ‘Mummy’s Curses’)

In February 1923, a British archaeological team opened the tomb of Tutankhamun, or “King Tut,” an Egyptian pharaoh during the 14th century B.C. Two months later, when the team’s sponsor died from a bacterial infection, British newspapers claimed without evidence that he’d died because of “King Tut’s curse.” Whenever subsequent members of the team died, the media dredged up the alleged curse again.

King Tut’s curse and other famous “mummy’s curses” were invented by Europeans and Americans while their countries removed priceless artifacts from Egypt. After the Titanic sank in 1912, some newspapers even promoted a conspiracy theory that the ship had sunk because of a “mummy’s curse.”

Though it’s not clear how many people actually took these “curses” seriously, these stories became extremely popular subjects for horror movies like The Mummy (1932) and its many iterations, as well as comedies like Mummy’s Boys (1936) and Abbott and Costello Meet the Mummy (1955).

2. The Curse of the Polish King’s Tomb

In 1973, a group of archaeologists opened the tomb of the 15th-century Polish king Casimir IV Jagiellon in Kraków, Poland. As with the opening of King Tut’s tomb 50 years before, European media hyped up the event, and the researchers involved allegedly joked that they were risking a curse on the tomb by opening it.

When some of the team members began to die shortly after, some media outlets speculated it was due to a curse. Later, experts discovered traces of deadly fungi inside the tomb that can cause lung illnesses when breathed in. This was the cause of their deaths.

3. The Hope Diamond Curse

In the 1660s, the French gem dealer Jean-Baptiste Tavernier purchased a large diamond of unknown origin during a trip to India. Yet by the 20th century, a myth had sprung up in the United States and Europe that Tavernier had stolen the diamond from the statue of a Hindu goddess. The newspapers and jewelers who spread this story claimed the diamond was cursed and brought bad luck to those who owned it.

By 1839, the diamond supposedly ended up with Henry Philip Hope, a Dutch collector based in London and the source of the stone’s modern name—the Hope Diamond. Sometime after this, European and American newspapers began claiming that the Hope Diamond carried a curse.

The French jeweler Pierre Cartier reportedly used these stories to enhance the diamond’s value when he sold it to American heiress Evelyn Walsh McLean in the early 1910s. After she died, it went to a U.S. jewelry company, which exhibited it before donating it in 1958 to the Smithsonian Institution, where it remains today.

5. The Curse of Tippecanoe (or Tecumseh’s Curse)

In the mid-20th century, U.S. media began to note a pattern in presidential deaths. Starting with William Henry Harrison and ending with John F. Kennedy, every 20 years the country elected a president who would die in office.

Harrison, the first president to die in office, was elected in 1840. The other presidents who died in office include Abraham Lincoln, elected 1860 (and 1864); James A. Garfield, elected 1880; William McKinley, elected 1900; Warren G. Harding, elected 1920; Franklin D. Roosevelt, elected 1940 (as well as 1932, 1936 and 1944); and JFK, elected 1960. The only president between Harrison and JFK to fall outside of this pattern is Zachary Taylor, who was elected in 1848 and died in 1850.

In the 1930s, Ripley’s Believe It or Not claimed the “pattern” was due to a curse Shawnee Chief Tecumseh placed on Harrison and future presidents after Harrison’s troops defeated Tecumseh’s at the Battle of Tippecanoe in 1811. (Tecumseh died two years later in another battle against Harrison’s troops.) This story likely originated with non-Native Americans and bears a similarity to other “curses” in U.S. books and movies about disturbing Native burial grounds.

6. The Curse of Macbeth

There are lots of superstitions in the world of theatre. It’s bad luck to wish actors good luck, hence the reason people instead tell them to “break a leg.” And it’s also bad luck to say the word “Macbeth” in the theatre except during a performance of the Shakespeare play. Supposedly, this is because tragedy has historically befallen productions of the play. In reality, these stories are a mix of fabrication and selective evidence-picking.

The legend about the play seems to have started with Max Beerbohm, a British cartoonist and critic born in the 1870s, nearly three centuries after Macbeth’s first performance. Beerbohm—possibly annoyed that Macbeth was such a popular play—made up a story that the first actor cast to play Lady Macbeth died right before the play’s opening night.

Since then, this story has become part of a myth that the play is cursed and has brought bad luck to those involved with it. Though there have been real accidents during runs of Macbeth over its more than 400-year history, these accidents gain more attention than accidents during other plays because of the supposed “curse.”

7. The Billy Goat Curse on the Chicago Cubs

As with theatre, there are also a lot of superstitions in the world of sports. One of the most famous is the supposed “billy goat curse” on the Chicago Cubs.

In 1945, a tavern owner named William “Billy Goat” Sianis was reportedly prevented from bringing his pet goat, Murphy, into Chicago’s Wrigley Field to see the Cubs play the Detroit Tigers in the World Series. Supposedly, Sianis put a curse on the Cubs, saying they wouldn’t win this or any other World Series ever again.

Before this, the Cubs had only won the World Series twice before, in 1907 and 1908. When they lost the World Series in 1945, the curse gained credence. In 2016, when the Cubs won the world series for the first time in over a century, U.S. media promoted the idea that the curse was broken.

The billy goat curse is similar to the curse of the Bambino, which supposedly began when the Boston Red Sox traded Babe Ruth in 1919 and ended when the team won the World Series in 2004. There’s also rapper Lil B’s curse on Kevin Durant, which Lil B issued in a 2011 tweet and lifted in 2017 in another tweet. When the Golden State Warriors won the NBA finals that year with Durant earning MVP, sports media jokingly (or not?) proclaimed that Lil B had helped by lifting the curse.

However, when Mars stops being retrograde in Nov., things will improve. When Saturn leaves Capricorn in Dec., things will improve. When Mars is past its “shadow” in early January, things will improve. This is what we need to know! Four signs have the worst of it this year (everyone has the worst of it!) You are one of them. Initially, when your ruler Mars entered your sign, this was great! When you have goals, it makes future decision-making much easier! (“No, I’m not going to Fiji. In fact, I’m never going to Fiji.”) See how easy that is? Be patient with people you meet because this is where you will encounter some snags, which are really a battle of egos. You must remember that you are powerful, strong-willed and scary when you’re upset. (You don’t think you are – but others do.) Be nice! Sagittarius (Nov. 22-Dec. 21)

This week, relations with friends and groups are challenging. It might come down to, “Who’s in charge?” “Who’s on first?” You might also have challenges with kids or a romantic partner. What are you fighting about? Or is it a power struggle that is subtle but it makes you grind your teeth at night? Remember that optimism and a positive frame of mind are food for your soul.
