Goddess – Hel

Norse Goddess of Death from gods-and-goddesses.com

Hel is the Norse goddess of the dead. She ruled over the underworld, Niflheim, where she received the dead. Her name means “one that hides.”

In general, Hel is only mentioned in passing in Old Norse literature. It means her character is ill-defined and her personality little-developed. Some historians even suggest that she is a figment of the imagination of the Norse poets.

Facts About Hel

Name(s): Hel
Rules over: The Underworld
Gender: Female
Symbols: Hagalaz Rune
Linked Animals: Hellhound (named Garmr), Crows
Parents: Loki and Angrboda
Siblings: Fenrir and Jörmungandr
Greek Similar: Hades
Roman Similar: Pluto

Family

In Norse mythology, Hel’s father was the trickster god Loki and her mother the giantess Angrboda. Loki and Angrboda had three children: the wolf Fenrir; the serpent Jörmungandr; and Hel, their only daughter.

Hel was born with the bones on one half of her body fully exposed and, thus, is often depicted as a half-black and half-white monster. She grew up with Fenrir and Jörmungandr in Jotunheim, land of the giants, until Odin, ruler of the Aesir, decided they should live in Asgard where their father came from.

Symbols

Hel is associated with a hellhound named Garmr as well as crows. She is also sometimes affiliated with the Hagalaz Rune stone.

Powers & Duties

In Asgard, the other Norse gods were uncomfortable with Hel’s appearance. For this reason, Odin agreed to send her away, and gave her the World of Niflheim – one of the Nine Realms. There she became queen of the dead.

The Norse believed that most people went to Niflheim when they died. Only warriors who were killed on the battlefield did not go to Niflheim. Instead, half of the warriors who died on the battlefield went to live with Odin in his palatial home Valhalla and the other half with Freya in her afterlife realm Folkvang.

Niflheim was divided into sections, including one called the shore of corpses. Here, a castle filled with venomous serpents stood facing north. It was full of murderers, perjurers, and adulterers who suffered while their blood was sucked by a dragon named Nidhogg.

When Odin’s son Baldur died because of a trick by Loki, his soul was also received in Niflheim. Hermod, another son of Odin’s, agreed to go to Hel to convince her to send Baldur home. But Loki played another trick to make it impossible for Baldur to return to the real world. The eventual exposure of his trickery led to the end of the world, a battle between good and evil known as Ragnarok.

In Niflheim, Hel was waited upon by two servants called Ganglati and Ganglot. It is said they moved so slowly that they appeared to be standing still. They served her meals in a dish named “hunger” and with a knife named “famine.”

Facts About Hel

  • Holland, Helvetia, Helsinki, and Holstein are well-known places that were probably named after Hel;
  • Hel’s appearance could be the inspiration of the masked harlequin who appeared in Commedia dell’ Arte;
  • No-one could hide anything from Hel. She had an eye of fire, which could only see the truth;
  • The Vikings feared Hel’s appearance, and they were wary of Niflheim;
  • Niflheim was an icy cold place rather than a place of fire and brimstone most associated with the modern idea of hell;
  • In the Prose Edda written by Snorri Sturluson in the 13 th century, Niflheim is described as a place where a constant wail can be heard from the residents. It is damp with sleet and the walls are built with worms and the bones of humans;
  • In the Gylfaginning, the first part of the Prose Edda, Hel is described as “rather downcast and fierce-looking”;
  • Hel was feared by the Vikings, but the Gauls, Dutch, and Germanic peoples were more sympathetic towards her. They did not see Niflheim as a place of punishment and had a kinder approach to death;
  • The expression “go to hell” originated with Hel and Niflheim;
  • Niflheim existed beneath the roots of the world tree Yggdrasil;
  • Jacob Grimm, a scholar of Norse mythology, had a theory that Hel was only a “half-goddess.” He argued that because Loki made the giantess Angrboda pregnant, there was no proof that Hel was of full divine blood;
  • Some scholars have suggested that several of the imitation medallions and bracteates which remain from the Migration Period depicts Hel;
  • Hela, the fictional villainess in Marvel Comics’ American comic books, is based on Hel. She is also featured in the webcomic The Order of the Stick, in which she is an antagonist who wants to destroy the world.

Gods – Loki

Loki Norse God of Mischief from .gods-and-goddesses.com

Loki is known as the trickster god and deity of mayhem and mischief in Norse mythology. He is one of the most well-known gods of Norse mythology. He is at least half-giant; however, some think he is full-giant but sneaked his way to becoming a god.

Loki Facts

Name(s): Loki
Rules over: Chaos, Mischief
Gender: Male
Symbols: Mistletoe, Horned Helmet (modern depictions)
Linked Animals: Two Intertwined Snakes
Parents: Fárbauti and Laufey
Siblings: Helblindi and Býleistr
Greek Similar: Atë
Roman Similar: Laverna

Family

Loki’s father was Fárbauti and his mother was Laufey. It is unknown whether his mother was a lesser known goddess or a giant, and his father definitely was a giant.

This duplicity may have attributed to Loki’s split feelings about the gods of Asgard. Sometimes he is helpful to them, but other times he insults them, causes trouble, and during Ragnarok leads the giants into battle against Asgard.

Symbols

Loki has been associated with mistletoe, two intertwined snakes, and also a helmet with two horns.

Powers & Duties

Loki had the power to shape-shift in Norse legends. In various stories, he turned into a salmon, mare, seal, fly, and elderly woman. He also used a combination of masterful trickery and cunning to achieve his objectives.

Stories

The first time Loki helped the gods was when they were building Asgard. The gods had run out of funds and all they had built was a wall. Loki came up with the idea that a giant should finish the job for them. The gods agreed, as did the giant. But, the giant asked for the Sun, the Moon, and the goddess Freya as payment if he completed the job on time. The gods weren’t sure, but Loki assured them that the giant would never finish on time. The giant had a huge stallion called Svadilfari to help him, and the gods got nervous. Loki changed shape into a mare and seduced the giant’s horse. As a result of Loki’s trickery, the giant wasn’t able to finish on schedule and tried to kidnap Freya. Before the giant could, Thor cracked his skull with a hammer. However, Loki, as the female horse, got pregnant and gave birth to an eight-legged stallion named Sleipnir, which he gave to Odin.

Another time he helps the gods of Asgard is when Thor lost his hammer, Mjolnir. Thor asks Loki for help and they work together to find where the hammer is located. Thrymr, the giant, had stolen the weapon and taken it to the home of the giants. He would only return it if Freya would agree to marry him. Loki came up with a plan that included his and Thor’s cross-dressing to get the hammer back. It succeeded, and Thrymr was punished.

During a great feast in Asgard, Loki wasn’t invited and was upset. He asked the guard what the gods were talking about, and the guard told him they were talking about war, weapons, and saying negative things about Loki. Loki burst in, and the gods became silent. Loki then asks for a seat, and Odin finally agrees to let him sit. Loki gives a toast to all the gods except for Bragi, whom he insults instead. They start arguing and other gods and goddesses get involved.

Loki begins to insult them all, including Odin, and when Frigg, Odin’s wife, tries to stop Loki, he ends up insulting her as well. She tells Loki that if her son Baldur were still alive, Loki wouldn’t be able to escape the wrath of the gods. Loki then reminds her that he is responsible for Baldur’s death. The insults continue when Freya calls Loki mad – he retorts that she is a whore. Heimdall tells Loki he’s drunk and to stop, but Loki insults Heimdall. Skadi tells Loki to watch it or he’ll be bound up, and Loki insults her. Sif, the wife of Thor, gives him mead in a golden goblet saying she is blameless and he can’t insult her. Loki claims she is his lover. Thor finally arrives, threatens Loki to silence with Mjolmir, and Loki finally leaves after insulting Thor. He disguises himself as a salmon, but the gods find him and finally bind him until Ragnarok.

Facts About Loki

  • In Old Norse, Loki means “close”;
  • Loki typically cheated dwarves at any opportunity given to him. They finally were able to stitch his mouth shut to keep him quiet from insults;
  • Loki is the father of Hel, the goddess of the land of the dead. He is also father of Fenrir, the wolf demon that bites off Tyr’s hand and will eat Odin during Ragnarok. He is also the father of Jormungandr, the world serpent;
  • Loki steals Freya’s amber necklace, in which Heimdall fights him and retrieves it;
  • Loki tricked blind Hod to kill Baldur with mistletoe;
  • When bound until Ragnarok, Skadi places a venomous snake above him, which causes him terrible pain with the poison.

April 2023 – Gardening by the Moon, Biodynamic Planting Guide

Please read this first:

1) Moon Phase x Moon Zodiac Sign:

Please keep in mind, that Gardening by Moon Phase and Gardening by Moon Zodiac Sign are two different/independent biodynamic systems and they might give you different or contradictiory gardening recommendations.

  • a) Each Moon Phase (except Full Moon and New Moon) lasts about 1 week
  • b) Each Moon Zodiac Sign lasts about 2.5 days

Try to experiment with these two systems to find which recommendations suits you the most.

2) Tropical (Astrological) x Sidereal (Astronomical) Zodiac:
(1-2 days difference in Leaf, Fruit, Root and Flower days)

There are two different zodiacs for determining the Moon Sign:

  • a) Tropical zodiac (Astrological) is based on the seasons – Vernal Equinox is fixed as 0° Aries (The 1st Fruit day)
  • b) Sidereal zodiac (Astronomical) takes into account Precession of Equinoxes and shifts 0° Aries back by cca 1-2 days. Maria Thun who was an authority on biodynamics was using this Sidereal zodiac

Try to experiment also with these two zodiac systems to find which system suits you better. (Side Note one system follows the other)

Goddess – Nut

Egyptian Goddess Nut from gods-and-goddesses.com

Nut is the Egyptian goddess of the sky. She is a member of the Ennead, the nine original Egyptian gods and goddesses of Heliopolis, which was a city near Cairo and the birthplace of the gods.

Nut Facts

Name(s): Nut
Rules over: Sky
Gender: Female
Symbols: Water Pot, Ladder called maqet
Sacred animals: Cow
Parents: Shu (Father) and Tefnut (Mother)
Siblings: Geb

Family

She is the daughter of Shu and Tefnut, and both sister and wife to Geb, the earth god.

Egyptian mythology said that Nut and Geb were inseparable, which left no room for creation by Atum Ra, the creator god. Atum Ra and Shu, who were jealous of the closeness between Nut and Geb, did not want them to have children. Shu separated them by lifting Nut up. She continued to form the sky, while Geb remained beneath her to form the earth.

In another myth featuring Ra, Nut is referred to as his mother. The Pyramid Texts reveal that her body becomes a pathway for the sun. Ra passes over it during the day before Nut swallows him at night. Then, a new day starts when she gives birth to him again in the morning.

Ra issued a decree that Nut “shall not give birth on any day of the year.” She conspired with Thoth, the god of wisdom, who won five extra days from the moon for her to bear five children. She gave birth to Osiris, ruler of the gods; Horus the Elder, god of war; Set, god of evil; Isis, goddess of magic; and Nephthys, goddess of water. This is the story of how a year came to have 365 days.

Symbols

Nut is most commonly depicted as a naked woman with a water pot on her head; the pot is also the hieroglyph for her name. Sometimes she is pictured in an arch, with her hands and feet on the ground, touching it on the earth’s four cardinal points and serving as the pillars of the sky. Often, Shu is seen holding her as Geb rests propped up by his elbow on the earth.

Nut is often portrayed holding the key of life, called the ankh. She may also be seen holding the was scepter in depictions of her. This scepter is a long staff with an animal head on top and is a symbol of authority and divine power.

Nut is sometimes depicted as a cow with eyes representing the sun and the moon, or a giant suckling sow whose piglets were the stars. The sycamore tree, representing protection and eternity, is another symbol associated with Nut.

Powers & Duties

Nut’s primary duty is being the Egyptian sky goddess. However, because she was said to give birth to many of the major Egyptian gods, she was also referred to as “She who Bore the Gods”. There are inscriptions of Nut at Dendera, the birthplace of Isis, emphasizing her importance as “She who Bore the Gods”.

Nut was also a protector goddess, namely a protector of the dead. The Pyramid Texts contain many prayers to Nut to ask for protection for those who have died.

A picture of Nut was often painted on the inside of a coffin (sarcophagus) to protect the dead. Sometimes she is pictured with protective wings, and other times the symbol of the ladder was used to depict her. Many examples of these can be seen at the Cairo Museum.

Worship

The chief cult center for Nut was at Heliopolis, but she was also worshiped as a healing goddess in Memphis at a shrine called the House of Nut. No known temples were built exclusively for her.

Facts About Nut:

  • Alternative names for Nut are Nueth, Newet, or Nuit;
  • Pictures and depictions of Nut are present in many forms of ancient Egyptian art. They have been found in tombs, temples, and manuscripts. For example, she is represented on the vaults of tombs which are painted in dark blue and with many stars;
  • When Set killed Osiris and Isis put him back together after gathering all the body pieces, Osiris climbs a ladder (called a maqet), a sacred symbol of Nut, to enter her heavenly skies for protection. Set later became god of the underworld while she was regarded as protector of the dead.
  • An ancient Egyptian astronomical text, The Fundamentals of the Course of the Stars, was later renamed to the Book of Nut. It dates back to before 2,000 BC;
  • The passionate relationship between Nut and Geb offers an alternative myth about how night and day came to be. It is said that they separated during the day, but that she would reach down to the earth in the evening to meet him. Darkness set in when she was away from the sky.

Gods – Thoth

Egyptian God Thoth from gods-and-goddesses.com

Thoth Facts

Name(s): Thoth
Rules over: Knowledge, Wisdom, Moon
Gender: Male
Symbols: Moon Disk
Sacred animals: Ibis bird
Parents: None
Siblings: None
Greek Similar: Apollo, God of Knowledge

Thoth is the Egyptian god of Knowledge. He was widely worshiped as inventor of the written word and credited with the creation of different branches of knowledge.

Thoth is a central figure in ancient Egyptian religion, filling various important roles in the mythological world. However, the worship of Thoth lasted only until the dynastic era. Regardless, the Egyptians and Greeks alike credit him as the inventor of all knowledge.

Family

Egyptian myth told that Thoth was self-created, while at least two alternate stories claim he was either born from the sun god Ra’s lips or from the war god Set’s forehead after Set swallowed the semen of his brother Horus.

Symbols

He is commonly depicted in human form with the head of an Ibis, a sacred bird associated with wisdom. The name Thoth is the Greek version of the Egyptian name Djehuti, which means “He Who is Like the Ibis.” Sometimes he is pictured holding an ankh, a famous hieroglyph resembling a cross, and scepter; other times, he is pictured holding a scribe’s palette and stylus. He is also seen wearing the Atef crown usually worn by Osiris. When he took the form of A’an, god of equilibrium, he was depicted with the head of a baboon.

Powers & Duties

Considered to be the author of the Book of the Dead, Thoth also acted as scribe to the gods and of the underworld. In this capacity, he stood by during the weighing of the hearts of deceased persons. Hearts lighter or equal to the weight of a feather could move on to a heavenly existence. Thoth’s just decisions in these and other matters made him a respected judge.

Appropriately, one epithet given to Thoth is “The Reckoner of Time and of Seasons.” He possesses the gift of measuring and recording time. In one popular myth, he added an extra five days to add to the 360 day calendar. This was to enable Nut, the sky goddess, to have a child on each of these days after Ra issued a decree that she was to have no children on any day of the original year.

Worship

Thoth was first worshiped as a moon god. The moon’s cycles played an important role in Egyptian life. The crescent moon resembled an ibis, the bird associated with Thoth.

Thoth’s main temple is at Khmun. Here he led the Ogdoad pantheon, the four gods and four goddesses who made up the principal deities before creation. He has shrines in numerous other cities.

A festival of Thoth was held at Khmun, where his worshipers buried mummified baboons and ibises as votive offerings. Evidence of these have been found by archaeologists at the necropolis of Tuna el-Gebel.

Facts About Thoth

  • When Set killed Osiris, Thoth helped Isis to resurrect him and assisted Anubis with the first act of mummification;
  • Invoked in many spells used in popular magic, Thoth is also seen as a god of magic;
  • Thoth remains a well-known god in popular culture. In modern literature, for example, he is the character Mr. Ibis in Neil Gaiman’s American Gods. He is also featured on his throne on the logo of the University of Cairo;
  • Thoth was associated with Hermes, the messenger god, by the Greeks. They were combined to form Hermes Trismegistus. Thereafter, Khmun became Hermopolis;
  • According to myth, Thoth wrote 42 books containing all the knowledge humanity needs. He was given the title of “Author of Every Work on Every Branch of Knowledge, Both Human and Divine.” Some of this knowledge was so powerful that it could not be revealed to everyone;
  • The Mansion of Thoth was his home in the afterlife. Souls found a safe place to rest here, where they received magic spells to protect them from demons;
  • Some of the disciplines the Greeks credit Thoth for include mathematics, astrology, geometry, botany, and land surveying;
  • Djehuti, an Egyptian pharaoh of the Sixteenth dynasty, was named after Thoth. He ruled for three years.

Tinne or Teine

T stands for Tinne, or Teine, the Holly tree. This evergreen plant is connected to immortality, unity, courage, and the stability of hearth and home. Pronounced chihnn-uh by the Celts, the wood of the Holly was often used in the construction of weapons, and is known as a plant of warriors and protectors.

In the pre-Christian British Isles, the Holly was often associated with protection–planting a hedge around your home would keep malevolent spirits out, thanks in no small part to the sharp spikes on the leaves. In Celtic myth, the concept of the Holly King and the Oak King symbolizes the changing of the seasons, and the transition of the earth from the growing time to the dying season.

When Christianity moved into the Celtic lands, the new religion associated the Holly plant with the story of Jesus. The poky spikes on the leaves represent the crown of thorns worn by Jesus on the cross, and the bright red berries symbolize his blood.

Tinne Correspondences

Mundane Aspects: Hang a sprig of Holly in your home to protect your family in your absence. Soak the leaves in spring water under a full moon, and then use the water as a blessing for people or items you wish to protect. There is strength to be found in standing together, and ultimately protection comes from honor and trust.

Magical Aspects: Develop the ability to respond quickly and wisely to your intuition. Learn to overcome and adapt to new situations, and to respond immediately to changes in your spiritual environment. Trust your instinct, but don’t let your heart rule over your head.

Hexagram Five/5

Water Over Heaven Also called “Patience

Changing Lines in Hexagram #5

The lesson of hexagram number 5 is that good things come to those who wait. Patience requires both inner strength and a commitment to resist the temptation of acting prematurely. Often hardships will arise in the course of one’s time spent waiting. The message here is that those who endure these hardships, and “cross great streams” will emerge victorious. Do not be put off your path at this time.

(Side Note: Hexagram lines start at the bottom of the hexageram)

Changes in Line 1

“Waiting at the Field”

Patience is best exercised from a proper vantage point. Consider placing oneself in a position from where one can watch approaching events at a distance. Do not alter your daily routine, because there is much in it that will help you when events move more quickly.

Changes in Line 2

“Waiting by the Sea”

During tests of patience, it is easy to assume the worst. Such assumptions cause undue panic and grief and reduce one’s ability to think clearly and rationally. Remember that with patience comes perseverance. Do not be swayed by unwarranted fears of failure.

Changes in Line 3

“Waiting in the Marsh”

While waiting for events to happen, it is important to remain ready for action. Changes in this line represent a warning that things are not “at the ready” and your response may be too slow when the situation calls for action.

Changes in Line 4

“Waiting by Blood”

Changes in this line are a serious warning that you are not prepared for action that will soon be required of you. It is foolish to remain trapped in a position of weakness. You must urgently “climb out of the pit” you are in, and get yourself to a place where you are capable of action and change.

Changes in Line 5

“Waiting at the Feast”

Your perseverance brings good fortune, but the ultimate achievement still lies ahead. It is important to rest along the way. Enjoy the good things that life has to offer. You will need the strength for the challenge that still lies ahead.

Changes in Line 6

“Falling Down. / Visitors Arrive.”

There are two messages represented by this changing line: The first is a stern message that a serious failure is imminent. You stand at the edge of a pit, and it is quite sure that you will fall. The second message is more unusual: During your fall, “uninvited guests” will arrive. Treat them all well. For they are part of a larger plan that will help you immeasurably.

The Two Trigrams Within Hexagram #5

Hexagram #5 is structured out of two 3-line trigrams layered on top of one another.

The lower three lines of hexagram #5 make up the trigram for Heaven.

The top three lines make up the trigram for Water.

Hexagram #5’s Lower Trigram of Heaven

The supreme trigram of Heaven is also sometimes known as the the Creative. It is a trigram of unadulterated, perfect creative force. The trigram for Heaven is a representation of pure truth and power. The trigram may also point to a father figure — or the direction of the northwest.

Hexagram #5’s Upper Trigram of Water

The fluid and forever-changing trigram of water is also sometimes called the trigram of the ‘Gorge’ or of the ‘Abysmal’. Water itself is shapeless and liquid — symbolizing shifting realities and random outcomes. This fluid trigram is often an indication of uncertainty or sudden shifts. The water trigram is associated with the moon’s cycles and with the direction north.

Dragonfly

Dragonfly Totem – The Spiritual Meaning

Dragonfly Spirit Animal is an important animal totem in many cultures. To most of Europe, they represent evil. No doubt due to the nasty bite they deliver should you offend him. Japanese people love the dragonfly totem. The Navajo of the Native Americans recognizes them as a symbol of pure water and swiftness and activity.

Certainly, it is worth noting that the dragonfly starts their lives in nymph form. They then become the more familiar form that flies through the air later in their lives.

Dragonfly Associated Traits

Transformation, adaptability, lightness, joy, emotions, hidden self, purity, speed, wisdom, and enlightenment.

Does the Dragonfly Spirit Animal Signify Good Luck?

The Dragonfly totem signifies that soon things will work out for the better in your life. You will be free to do the things that you bring you joy. Do not allow any challenges to put you down because you are better than that. Always want the best for yourself and the people in your life.

This animal totem wants you to express free will in everything you do. Do not hold yourself back from achieving your highest potential. The meaning of the Dragonfly emphasizes the need to be true to yourself. Never live a dishonest life if you want to make great things manifest in your life.

Always express your true feelings, and you will live a great life. Do not listen to people that tell you that you cannot make it. You have all that it takes to change your life for the better and live positively. The Dragonfly is an ally you need to have in your corner. This animal totem will enable you to get rid of all the negatives in your life.

Dragonfly Animal Totem Meaning

Dragonfly spirit animal is a symbolic creature of two realms. It symbolizes the emotional realm of water and the intellectual realm of air. Therefore, Dragonfly totem animal carries two Karmic lessons for us.

The first lesson is that of water, calling us to celebrate our joy and emotions. Similarly, it tells us to live in them with great passion and depth. The lesson of air calls us to temper them with emotion and bring them into balance. Dragonfly dances on the winds of change, comfortable in his ever-changing environment.

So what does it mean if you see a dragonfly? Well, it is a powerful lesson. Unlike rat, which adapts to the situation while remaining Rat, Dragonfly totem reminds us that life is ever-changing. Also, it shows that it will sometimes call on us to change as well. As such, the transformation of Dragonfly can call for complete metamorphosis.

As such, if a Dragonfly visits you, it is a call for a great period of change in your life. It is a reminder that old habits are haunting your decisions. Come out of your Nymph stage. Ideally, it may not be time to grow up, but it’s time to change who and what we are.

Know also that Dragonfly as a spirit guide has great vision. The time may come when the mists that hang over the deep waters of life are almost more than you can navigate.

The mists hide everything, disguise what we know, and make it difficult to see our clear path. As the Dragonfly meaning suggests, it understands these waters. It has lived its whole life in these waters, so let it guide you.

Love and The Dragonfly Spirit Animal

Dragonfly animal totem is more in touch with your emotional state. It is a sign that you need to prepare your heart to receive love. You need love in your life if you want to live wholly, peacefully, and happily. Reveal your true self to the world if you want to attract the right kinds of romantic energies.

Do not focus much on the things that happened to you in the past. Forget about past hurts and open yourself up to receiving the right kind of love. With the Dragonfly power animal, you do not need to pretend to be someone you are not. Be your genuine self, and the right kind of love will eventually come your way.

Dragonfly symbolism reveals that you can be ready to go through great metamorphosis when it comes to heart matters. Do not hold yourself back from going after the things that make you happy.

Positive and Negative Traits of the Dragonfly Totem

You should be proud of the trait of the Dragonfly totem that brings out your compassionate side. Always be compassionate and kind to the people around you. Show them love and do all that you can to help where possible. You possess a kind heart; therefore, you are incapable of turning a blind eye on people in need.

You are a great inspiration to people who want to grow spiritually. Help such people stay on the right spiritual path and always lift them up when they stumble and fall. The Dragonfly is light and free, and so are you. Always bounce back amid challenges and reclaim your life.

The Dragonfly meaning on the negative side means being too attached and feeling too deeply to the extent that you hurt yourself. It is good that you are connected to your emotions, but you should not let them control you.

Dragonfly Spirit Animal: Conclusion

Seeing Dragonfly totem is a sign that you need to have a new perspective in life. Do the things that make you happy and change your life for the better. Always be willing to make the best out of your life. Challenges will come and go, but you should remain strong and steadfast. Get out of your comfort zone and have new experiences in life.

Look at the bigger picture in life and focus on becoming great. You are great, and know that you possess great talents and gifts that will enable you to create the life you want. Look to the spiritual meaning of the Dragonfly to take off the blinders in your life.

All Signs

Two major thrusts of energy are at play this week. The first is that after some silliness on Monday, this week is about cooperation and working together. It’s a time for teamwork and harmony, which is wonderful. (The great thing about teamwork is you can put the blame on someone else.) The other energy thrust will be a slow buildup towards Thursday’s Full Moon (Wednesday night Pacific time.) This will be the only Full Moon in Libra all year, which means if we show irritation with others, we will quickly seek ways to make nice — and be colour coordinated while doing so. Librans are fashionable people pleasers who like harmony and beauty in their surroundings. Oscar Wilde was a Libra, and his last words were, “Either that wallpaper goes, or I do.”

Aries (March 21-April 19)

You’re in a good mood this week because the Sun is in your sign along with lucky Jupiter. What’s not to like? You’ll be energized, enthusiastic and eager to do things. Admittedly, during the build up to the Full Moon on Thursday (Wednesday night Pacific time), you will feel increased tension with partners and close friends because this is the only Full Moon opposite your sign all year. Plus, Mars at the bottom of your chart will encourage chaos and confusion at home, which could create family tension. Nevertheless, this is nothing you can’t handle with charm and skilful means. Think of your own happiness. You want to be happy – keep it that way.

Taurus (April 20-May 20)

Once again, mixed messages: The placement of the Sun makes you want to hide and be private. However, Mercury and Venus want you to get out and socialize! Go figure. This is why you will be like Jekyll and Hyde this week. Nevertheless, your communication skills are excellent! You’ll be convincing, persuasive, to the point and clear, which bodes well for those in sales, teaching, marketing and acting. People will really listen and be affected by your words. (This is an advantage one does not always have, so use it wisely.) Be patient and forgiving with coworkers before Thursday’s Full Moon.

Gemini (May 21-June 20)

Your popularity continues! This is a lovely week to schmooze and be active with groups. It’s important to know your interactions with others will be mutually beneficial. In fact, someone might encourage you to make meaningful goals or refine your To Do list. Parents must be patient with their kids because the buildup before the Full Moon on Thursday could create stress in your relations with your kids. It will also create stress in romantic relationships. (This might be further complicated by a secret flirtation or hidden love affair.) Meanwhile, you’re prepared to work hard for your money because you’re spending it! (Should I use the word hemorrhaging?)

Cancer (June 21-July 22)

This is a powerful time for you because this is the only time all year when the Sun is at the top of your chart. (It’s there for four weeks once a year.) This symbolizes that you have a spotlight shining down on you and the spotlight is flattering, which means others see you as super competent (even if you don’t do anything different). Ergo, it’s time to act. Use the magic! Do whatever you can to advance your agenda because others are impressed with you. Having said that, countering this favourable influence will be the Full Moon on Thursday, which pits the interests of home and family versus the interests of your career and public reputation. This might require kid gloves. Ya think?

Leo (July 23-Aug. 22)

The theme for this week is cooperation and teamwork, which will help you because both Mercury and Venus are at the top of your chart, making you skilful in how you negotiate with power types. (This includes Mom.) Make the most of this and use your influence wisely to benefit yourself and others. Meanwhile, back at the ranch, the slow buildup of tense energy approaching the Full Moon on Thursday could create an accident-prone situation for you. Of course, that does not have to happen but do be aware of this. Guard against distractions. Pay attention to everything you say and do. In particular, avoid controversial, volatile subjects like politics, religion and racial issues – if you can.

Virgo (Aug. 23-Sept. 22)

You will enjoy teamwork and support from others, especially dealing with foreign countries and matters related to publishing, the media, medicine and the law. You will also get support dealing with issues about higher education. Friends and groups might introduce an element of competition, as well. Nevertheless, the Full Moon on Thursday this week can bring issues related to shared property, taxes, debt, inheritances and earnings to a head. The thing to know is that problems generally increase in intensity and complexity as the Full Moon approaches, and then after the Full Moon peaks, these same problems greatly diminish. Sometimes they even disappear! Poof!

Libra (Sept. 23-Oct. 22)

“Hello sunshine!” This week the only Full Moon in your sign all year is taking place. Because Mars is at the top of your chart, you’re ambitious and will defend your best interests. Meanwhile Mercury and Venus will embolden you in financial negotiations, especially about getting money back from the government, getting a loan or decisions about how to divide or share something like an inheritance. Having said that, of course, the Full Moon in your sign could create a buildup of tension between you and partners, spouses and close friends. The solution is simple. Be patient. Don’t overreact. “These are not the Droids you’re looking for.”

Scorpio (Oct. 23-Nov. 21)

This week you have the energy to study and explore new ideas either through travel or by expanding your knowledge through research and learning new things. (You love to do this.) Relations with partners, spouses and close friends will be warm and rewarding because both Mercury and fair Venus are opposite your sign. You will also find it easy to express your affection for someone and make your feelings clear. Even professional relationships will be more harmonious. However, the Full Moon this Thursday could create a buildup of tension with a coworker. The thing to know is that whatever bothers you will probably be history by the weekend. Don’t get your belly in a rash. Easy does it.

Sagittarius (Nov. 22-Dec. 21)

This is a fun-loving, playful week! Relations with coworkers will be smooth and mutually supportive. Teamwork is favoured. Admittedly, disputes about shared property, inheritances, taxes or debt might be an issue. Your main focus is to secure your home base and create a home that you want now and in the future. However, this week the Full Moon on Thursday will create tension that affects relations with friends and groups to which you belong, as well as your kids. Romantic relationships are also in the mix when it comes to fraught feelings. More than most, you know that a positive attitude can transform everything around you, especially your own point of view. This is what will save you this week. Keep smiling!

Capricorn (Dec. 22-Jan. 19)

This week the only Full Moon taking place at the top of your chart all year will occur. This means if you get in a flap about something or find yourself at odds with a family member or someone at home, especially a parent, there’s a strong likelihood your disagreement will be public. Or perhaps you will tell everyone how frustrated you are? But really, this is not a big deal because it is just a Full Moon, which you deal with in different ways every month. The good news is that romantic relationships and social interactions are positive. Enjoy fun outings, including sports events, the arts and playful times with kids. Be patient with partners – definitely. (You can be right or in the relationship.)

Aquarius (Jan. 20-Feb. 18)

You have lots of energy to work and get things done this week. You’ll be PowerPoint on steroids! Relations with family members and everything to do with your domestic scene is also beautifully favoured. Home repairs and redecorating projects will appeal to you and will flow smoothly. You will also enjoy entertaining at home. So far, so good. (You can hear the catch coming.) This week the Full Moon on Thursday takes place in a part of your chart that affects your daily activities, your communications with others and transportation. This means that heightened feelings or distractions could trigger an accident. Doesn’t have to be – especially if you are mindful and aware. Forewarned is forearmed.

Pisces (Feb. 19-March 20)

Your schmooze factor is off the charts this week. Everyone loves you. Not only are you charming, entertaining and sociable, your good feelings will affect the immediate vibes around you. This is why you will travel in a personal “bubble” of happy feelings. For example, look around you and check out your daily surroundings and you will find that you truly appreciate them. You’re looking at your world through “positive eyes.” However, the Full Moon on Thursday crosses both your Money Houses, which means financial matters might come to a head. It’s that simple. This could be a good thing because maybe it’s a warning to get your ducks in a row. Deal with money you owe; deal with money that is owed to you. Make it happen.

Spell for Today – Spell To Find A Lost Pet

From shirleytwofeathers.com

For this spell to find a lost cat or other small pet, you’ll need the assistance of a tree, rock, or other outdoor entity—preferably one in your yard or very near your home. Take one of your pet’s favorite toys and some pet food to the tree. Tell the tree about your pet and that you are concerned because of how long he or she has been missing. Ask the tree if it will help you by providing a beacon for your pet to follow to get home. Leave the pet food near the tree. If a small rock gets your attention, bring it and the pet toy into the house. Keep them near the door. Every time you pass the toy, thank the tree for its help in providing a beacon for your pet.

A History of the Chakra Energy Systems by Siofra_Strega Spell Mechanic

From spells8.com

A Brief History of Energy Systems throughout Time

Between 1500 & 500 B.C. the first mention of the Chakra systems is in the Indus Valley Civilizations. They had a figure with three faces & wearing horned headgear that was in a yogic trance & surrounded by various animals such as elephants, lions, & the like… yoga at the time was practiced under Guru’s direction & the spiritual guidance was of utmost importance. Yoga exercises were built into the Upsana meditation techniques. Chakra is a term that is used to describe how “energy keeps moving” throughout the body. Yoga is often times used to direct or balance the energy centers through poses & meditation. They are believed to be spinning sources of energy or wheels for areas of the body and around the fields of energy surrounding the body.

Whether or not they have always been or if it’s a modernized tradition, the main seven Chakra centers are believed to also correlate to skills, expressions, kinds of health, nerve centers, & internal organs among other things spiritual, and physical, mental, and emotional states. The subtle (“energy”) body is made up of approximately 72,000 nadis that the subtle energy flows through. When several of the nadis cross it makes up an energy center. With so many nadis, depending on the system there can be up to 144 Chakras, but within each system of chakras, the main seven are the ones most people are referring to. So the Chakra is an energy center. Chakras are spinning to stay open & aligned while running along the spine keeping the flow of energy even & balanced. Chakra is a Sanskrit word that translates to “wheel” or “spinning wheel”

As psychic centers of awareness, along with the 600 B.C. Yoga Upanishads are also referred to in Pat Anjali’s Yoga Sutras in 200 B.C. The Yoga Upanishads are a collection of The Cudamini Upanishads, the Yoga Shikka Upanishad, The Shri Jabala Darshana Upanishad, & the Shandilya Upanishad. They all mention chakras, but they are spelled cakra. The systems were passed down through oral traditions by Indo-European people. Historically, they became an Eastern Concept until New Age writers connected with the concept & then by building on earlier beliefs and writings made the information more accessible and then written very well.

The Vedas are the oldest yoga scriptures also written around the same time in India between 1500 & 500 B.C. In Indian academics, it is thought that the chakra systems are much older due to oral traditions before recorded scriptures & long before Indo-Europeans arrived. As such even today information & skills are passed through teachers & students through examples or oral history of the chakra systems. The history of Sri Amit Ray extends beyond 114 Chakras also.

The primary source of chakras making their way west is the translation by Arthur Avalon in his book The Serpent Power which was published in 1919. The Sat Cakra Nirupana was published in 1577 by Swami Purnananda, & the Padaka Pancaka both written in the 10th century & they both include descriptions & associations of the centers. The Gorakshashatakam has directions for meditation on the chakras. Today’s knowledge of Kundalini yoga, energy, and chakra theory is based on those writings. In the West, these writings are the main source of information on the chakras.

It is believed that the oral traditions being passed down, actually began 12,000 to 1000 BCE & then translated when the Avestan speaking peoples & those that have descended from the Indo-European & the Russian civilizations. The ideas were mixed with each other’s cultures & intertwined within the Indigenous cultures of the Indus Valley. Historians are of the belief that the Vedic texts actually reflect both philosophies, which also include information from more ancient cultures such as the Indians or the Dravidians.

Many cultures & countries around the world have different interpretations of the Chakras. The West tends to relate the chakras to bodily organs & the physical body… however they aren’t a static reality, they are a fluid reality with a flowing energy type of nature to them.

The psychological states that are now associated with the chakras in the West are actually an innovation that was from Carl Jung’s archetypal theories & isn’t usually found in the Sanskrit texts.

  • Example: The Solar Plexus Chakra
  • Associated with power & purpose in the modern Chakra systems but in the ancient context, it would associate with each lotus petal of the Chakra with a distinct emotional state.

The cross-cultural takeaway is that Chakras “can be used as general tools to heal & balance the energetic, physical, spiritual, & emotional bodies.” However, across the world, this varies a bit when you compare the systems with each other.

The Hermetic Texts of Egypt, India, & Persia almost all embrace the belief in intangible energy.

In Africa, the Kemetic Tree of Life came with the Egyptians who practiced magic & mystery teachings daily. Their focus was an energy body referred to as ka & worked with the Kemetic Tree of Life as a pathway from Earth to the Heavens.

Jewish mystics adopted the Kabbalah under the Egyptian influence of the time back to Moses leading the Israelites out of Egypt. Early Egyptian energy contains concepts similar to the chakras & subtle energy bodies such as sekhem and “life force energy”. The ba is the soul that represents nonphysical energy.

The Yoruba tribe of Africa practiced magic & they had orishas or Spirits that dwell within the body, which happened to correlate to Hindu Chakra concepts.

“The Dogon tribe worked with sacred geometry & information received directly from their home star, Sirius, to help control living conditions & heal tribal members. The information they received from the stars was extremely mathematically accurate, far surpassing their technological abilities. Some say that these ancient cultures were always connected to galactic gateways, which allowed this transfer of universal knowledge.” (Complete Guide to Chakras)

In Hinduism energy of the ka body is considered to be prana (breath, life-giving force) or kundalini (energy that is coiled up at the base of the spine). In the Hindu text, Bhagavata-purana there are six Chakra centers indicated & two for other spiritual centers weren’t added until later for the higher spiritual practices.

Buddhist philosophy & the continuation of Tantric & yogic ideas, the Chakras are considered to be wheels that help to achieve emptiness or enlightenment. Sometimes there are fewer or more wheels (4, 5, 7, or 10) they all rely on tummo (Kundalini) for the ultimate awakening & integration of the full Chakra system.

The Middle East is loaded with different variations of the Chakra system. The Zoroastrians who are the authors of the scripture Avesta had the holy system Amesha Spentas or Divine Emanations which closely translated a six Chakra system.

The Sufis & the Jewish are rich in mystical cosmology also, and both have discussions around their vital energy bodies in sacred texts and teachings that relate the metaphysical realms to eternal creation lies within each one of us.

In North, South, & Meso America the Mayans, Incans, Andeans of Peru, the Huicholes, and other native cultures throughout time worked with the elements and physical locations of the Chakras on the body. Shamanic teachings and temple iconography show extensive knowledge of energy bodies and spirits from the land and sky.

In North America, the Cherokee had mystical connections to Pleiades & highlight body & Earth matrices, meridians, & interconnecting points on the body in their cosmology.

Over in Europe, the Vikings had an understanding of the Chakra systems that are symbolized by a tree with nine Norse Worlds. The Yggrdasil Tree connects the humans to Asgard, home of the Gods.

The Celts of Neolithic Britain had myths and lore of Gods & Goddesses with the contained concept of argano-rota (“silver wheel”)

It is said that in Avalon (a sacred Chakra of the Earth) the chakras were formed as the seven points of consciousness the top point being the Crown, housing the rest of the Chakras & not actually a Chakra itself.

Spell for Today – Five Pebbles Protection Spell

From shirleytwofeathers.com

Go to a moving brook or stream. While standing in the water and facing downstream, remove five small pebbles from the stream bed. As you do this, visualize your need for protection.

As your hand closes over the pebbles, see them beaming out protective energies. Just as the pebbles are hard and have weathered for eons, so too will they strengthen your protective shield.

Now carry them at all times for protection. If you wish, place them in a small pouch or a fold of cloth, or incorporate them into some form of jewelry.

Goddess – Minerva

Minerva – Facts and mythology from gods-and-goddesses.com

In Roman mythology, Minerva was a goddess jack-of-all-trades. She oversaw many realms that involved art and deep thought. She was regarded as the goddess of “all activities involving mental skill,” such as science, medicine, wisdom, handmade items, skilled professions, and trade. Later, she was seen as a goddess of war.

She was believed to have invented Roman numerals, or numbers, as well as a variety of musical instruments. Many researchers believe that the worship of Minerva in Rome was an extension of the cult of Athena, the Greek goddess with whom Minerva is equated. She may have been introduced to Italy by the Etruscans, who called her Menerva or Menvra. She was said to have had golden hair.

Myths & Stories

Minerva plays a role in many of Rome’s myths. For instance, in the Roman poet Ovid’s Metamorphoses, Minerva is jealous of the lowly human Arachne’s ability to craft objects of wool, as Arachne’s skill rivals her own. Nymphs, humans, and others would travel great distances to view Arachne’s creations and to watch her work.

Minerva had taught Arachne this skill, but she was jealous of her teacher in turn and would give Minerva no credit. Instead, she invited Minerva to compete with her in weaving. Therefore, Minerva disguises herself as an old woman and advises Arachne to entreat Minerva’s forgiveness. When Arachne refuses, Minerva reveals herself and the contest begins. Both woman and goddess weave beautiful tapestries on their looms.

Minerva once again tries to teach Arachne a lesson by weaving into her tapestry scenes of humans losing to gods in various contests, and even her own failure against the god Neptune. Obstinate Arachne replies with weavings of the gods’ less than honorable activities, such as seducing both mortals and immortals. When finished, Minerva could find no flaw in Arachne’s tapestry, yet she “tore up the embroidered tapestry with its stories of the gods’ shameful deeds.”

Then, she beats Arachne’s face with a wooden weaving tool. Arachne tries to strange herself with a noose, but Minerva does not let her perish. Instead, she turned her into a spider through the use of a magic herb, saying she and her descendants would always hang and always weave. Today, spiders are known as “arachnids” due to this myth.

Worship

Along with Jupiter and Juno, Minerva was worshiped as part of the Capitoline Triad, or trinity. They shared a temple on the Capitoline Hill in Rome. A temple devoted exclusively to Minerva was located on the Aventine Hill. This shrine served as a meeting place for the guilds of craftsmen, actors, and poets. Physicians worshiped this goddess as the patroness Minerva Medica.

Minerva was worshiped as a goddess of war alongside the god Mars. After a number of conquests on the Roman Empire’s eastern border, a temple to Minerva was built in Pompey – no doubt funded by the spoils of war. Her worship in Rome reached a peak in the first century A.D. when she was claimed as a special, personal protector by Emperor Domitian.

Festivals

Two events dedicated to Minerva were marked on the Roman Calendar. The first was known as the Quinquatria, celebrated by students and artisans on March 19-23, just after the Ides of March, made famous by the assassination of Julius Caesar and subsequent play by William Shakespeare. On June 13, a shorter observance called the minor Quinquatrus was celebrated. The Quintratrus was also the time of school holidays and when fees for schooling became due. Thus, Minerva was seen as a patron of schoolchildren as well as the skilled workers they would someday become. Minerva shared her festivals with the war god Mars. She was often identified with Nerio, the Sabine goddess who became the consort of Mars.

Today

Today, a church called Santa Maria sopra Minerva is located in a former temple to Minerva. Minerva’s interest in the sciences and pursuit of wisdom still lives in the moniker of the Japanese MINERVA space exploration robot. MINERVA, in this case, is an acronym for MIcro/Nano Experimental Robot Vehicle for Asteroid.

Gods – Mercury

Mercury • Facts & Mythology about the Roman god of communication, trade, business

Mercury is the messenger to the Roman gods. He is well known for his incredible speed. Originally, Mercury was a god of trade related to the corn crop. In fact, his name is derived from the Latin word merces, meaning “merchandise.”

Mercury, who is sometimes referred to as Mercurius, was also lauded as the protector of merchants, travelers, and shopkeepers. He was also defamed as the patron of thieves and those who played practical jokes.

Origins

In early Roman mythology, there was no mention of Mercury as a member of the ruling class of gods. Eventually, he was absorbed into Roman culture from the Greek god Hermes, messenger of the Greek gods. Mercury carried out many of the same functions as Hermes.

Mercury was the son of Jupiter, the Roman equivalent of the Greek god Zeus. The story of the birth of Mercury held that Jupiter secretly impregnated the goddess Maia in a cave on the island of Arcadia. The following day, Maia gave birth to Mercury before wrapping him in swaddling blankets and falling asleep. As his mother slept, Mercury raced across Arcadia to steal cattle from his brother, Apollo, before returning to his mother.

Maia woke to the sight of Mercury wrapped in his swaddling blanket and Apollo accusing him of stealing his cattle. Eventually, Jupiter stepped in to reveal he had watched Mercury steal the cattle and ordered their return. During the night, Mercury had fashioned a lyre from cattle intestines and began playing beautiful music. This inspired Apollo to ask for a trade of the cattle for the lyre.

Appearance

In most portrayals, Mercury is shown as a youthful god of Rome who is clean-shaven and is often little more than a child. Mercury is depicted in Roman artworks as wearing a helmet and sandals with attached wings that reflect his speed and position as the messenger of the gods. The son of Jupiter is also the god of commerce, leading him to being shown in some sculptures and paintings holding a purse.

Symbols

There are many symbols associated with Mercury, including his winged cap and sandals that reflect the speed of the Roman god. Mercury is often depicted as carrying a staff, which was a symbol the members of his cult added to their daily lives.

Mercury is associated with many animals, including the tortoise that played a role in his first day of life. Mercury used the shell of a tortoise to fashion the lyre he would trade for the cattle of Apollo. The tortoise would become a common symbol of Mercury throughout Roman culture and be accompanied by his close links to the ram and the rooster.

The rooster is the symbol of the new day that is brought by Mercury as a messenger of the gods. The ram is a symbol of fertility for the Roman people and is often seen with Mercury in stories and artworks.

Powers & Duties

Mercury’s main power is his ability to move at great speeds. He is most well-known for his role as a messenger to the gods. Interestingly, the role of the messenger also included the task of conducting the passage of individuals from Rome to the underworld when they died.

Mercury is also one of the most duplicitous gods in Roman culture. He is known for his trickery and ability to cheat people out of their belongings.

Myths & Stories

Mercury plays a role in many myths. As noted above, he is said to have stolen cattle and a bow and arrow when just a child. In the myth of Cupid and Psyche, he is called upon by Jupiter to make a proclamation demanding the capture of Psyche.

In the Aeneid, he is sent by Jupiter to Aeneas with orders to leave his lover and “sail away to fulfill his destiny in Italy.” He also plays a role in Roman poetry and theater, much of which was based on mythology.

In the play Amphitruo by the dramatist Plautus, Mercury dresses as a servant and aids Jupiter in disguing himself Amphitryon in order to seduce Amphitryon’s wife.

The poet Horace wrote of him in his Odes. In fact, Horace called himself mercurialis, meaning a lyric poet protected by Mercury.

Many of the myths of Mercury are derived from those of Hermes. Monuments to Hermes were thought to bring good luck, and this idea was perpetuated with Mercury as well. Another borrowed role was that of escorting the souls of the deceased to the underworld. It is speculated that the myths originated among shepherds, lending their interest in “music and fertility.” In fact, in some legends, Mercury is said to have invented the guitar-like lyre, and his son is said to have been a nymph who invented the music of the pastoral societies.

Worship

A temple to Mercury was dedicated on Rome’s Aventine Hill in 495 B.C. The festival of Mercuralia was held on May 15, the anniversary of the temple dedication, in honor of both Mercury and his mother Maia of the Pleiades. Rituals of this festival involved merchants drawing water from the well at Porta Capena to be sprinkled on their trade goods and on their own heads. Trade fairs were also held at the temple, and it was the location of Rome’s busy commercial center.

Art

In art and statues, Mercury is typically depicted as a handsome young man, even boyish in appearance, wearing a white garment. Mercury often carries a money purse, symbolizing his function as patron of merchants and business owners. His fleetness as messenger of the gods is represented by a hat or sandals with wings, called petasus and talaria, respectively. Mercury was thus called Alipes, meaning “with the winged feet.” He is also seen carrying a staff called a caduceus. The caduceus was a symbol of peace, carried by ambassadors to foreign lands. It consisted of a branch with two shoots, originally decorated with ribbons or garlands. In later times, these attributes were replaced by two twining snakes, with a pair of wings above the snakes. The snakes were related to Mercury’s role as a fertility god and in delivering souls to the underworld. Today, this symbol is used to represent physicians, the medical field, and the U.S. Army Medical Corps.

Today

Like many mythical figures, Mercury has been immortalized in the naming of celestial objects. The planet Mercury, as visible just after sunset, was called in ancient times by his Greek counterpart, Hermes. This was likely due to the planet’s rapid motion in comparison to other stellar objects. Interestingly, Mercury’s morning visitation, just before sunrise, was not recognized as being the same “star;” it was thus called Apollos. The element mercury (Hg) , atomic number 80 on the periodic table, was once known as “quicksilver.” The symbol for the planet Mercury was used to represent quicksilver in sixth century alchemy, and thus the chemical took on the name of the god as well.
