Recipe For Bread of the Dead

Bread of the Dead

Serve with milk or hot chocolate, and offer some to your departed ancestors, so they may breathe in its essence and be nourished, before you gobble it up yourself!
2 cups flour
2 teaspoons baking powder
2 Tablespoons sugar
1/4 t. salt
1 egg
2/3 cup milk
1/4 cup vegetable oil
10 drops anise extract
Mix all of the above until smooth. Heat the oven to 400 degrees and grease a cookie sheet. With clean hands, mold the dough into a round shape with a knob on the top (which will be a skull) or into smaller round shapes, animals, faces or angels. Place dough on cookie sheet.
1/4 cup brown sugar
1 T. flour
1 t. ground cinnamon
1 T. melted butter
Mix together brown sugar, flour, cinnamon and melted butter for the topping. Sprinkle topping on dough and bake for 20 to 25 minutes. When cool, decorate the skull shaped knobs, animals or faces with icing sugar to make eyes, nose and mouth.

Recipe For Remembrance Cookies

Recipe For Remembrance Cookies

These cookies can be made on Hallow’s Eve. They can be shaped like people and the herb rosemary is added to the dough as a symbol of remembrance. Some of the cookies are eaten while telling stories or attributes of special ancestors, reminding us that we still have access to their strengths–or perhaps a predisposition to their weaknesses. The rest of the cookies are left outside by a bonfire as an offering. This can be a solemn ritul, but it need not be.
Ingredients for the cookies:
1 1/2 c. powdered sugar
1 c. butter or margarine (softened)
1 egg
2 t. vanilla
1 t. almond extract
2 1/2 c. all purpose flour
1 t. baking soda
1 t. cream of tartar
1 1/2 T. chopped rosemary
Heat oven 375 degrees. In a large bowl, beat sugar, butter, egg, vanilla, almond extract, and rosemary until creamy. In a separate bowl, sift flour, baking soda, and cream of tartar. Fold flour mixture into sugar mixture. Beat until dough forms and refrigerate for three hours. Divide dough into halves. Roll out one portion to 3/16 of an inch on a floured surface. Cut out with gingerbread women or men cutters and place on an ungreased cookie sheet. Repeat rolling and cutting with second portion. Bake for 5-7 minutes.

“An Autumn Chant”

“An Autumn Chant”

by Karen Bergquist

I will dance
The dance of dying days
And sleeping life.
I will dance In cold, dead leaves
A bending, whirling human flame.
I will dance As the Horned God rides
Across the skies. I will dance
To the music of His hounds
Running, baying in chorus.
I will dance With the ghosts of those Gone before.
I will dance Between the sleep of life
And the dream of death.
I will dance On Samhain’s dusky eye, I will dance.

“Samhain Dream”

“Samhain Dream”

by Myria/Brighid

It is Samhain …The Night of Shadows. The Circle is cast around the fire, And through the darkness, we glance, For the veils are thin, in this sacred night! Ancient voices around us, Whispering old and forgotten songs, While we dance the Spiral Dance, To meet Her. And there She comes, The Lady of the Gate! Power and compassion evolving us, As a dark but comforting wave. Beautiful Queen of the Dark Night! With Her mantle of raven’s feathers, And eyes deep with wisdom. Cerridwenn! She opens Her arms, in a welcoming embrace, We feel around us the flow of love, Of Her Eternal Grace. And then we hear Her voice, Melodious and grave, That speaks from inside our soul, As an echo in a cave. Blessed Daughters of My Heart, I hear your prayers from afar. And that is why I came tonight! Do not despair when the times are hard! Do not abandon the Path you found! For time has come for My return, And you, Loved Ones, shall open the way, Singing my name as the ancient bards. I am always with you, do never doubt that! I am the Old and the Young One! I am the Keeper of the Gate! I am the Master of Time! I am the Dark Goddess of Death! I am the Bright Goddess of Dawn! I am The One! I am Cerridwenn!

Samhain Approaches

samhain18

I was about half asleep this morning, drinking my coffee. I was thinking about Samhain and how I looked forward to it each year. To me, it is the most beautiful time of the year.

The Veil is thinning, the energy is rising, you can feel it coursing through your veins. The magick and excitement is building in the atmosphere. For Witches, this is the most magickal time of the Year. We make plans on how we are going to celebrate. What kind of rituals we are going to do? What time should we start them? Any ancestors going to show up this year? Lots to do and little time left to do it.

I know what I am getting ready to say the Elders in the Craft already know and have heard it a thousand times. I just wanted to talk to the new ones to the Craft about what to expect or not. They come to our Religion so full of joy, eager to learn, wanting to do everything just right. Samhain is exciting for the Elders, can you imagine what it is like for the new ones? That is why I am writing this. I love each of you. I never want you to face discouragement or doubt yourself. I just want you to always be prepared. I know we all talk about our Ancestors and doing rituals to bring them back. You know it is breathtaking to have that kind of power.

I know when I did my first ritual to call my Ancestors back, I got very disappointed. No body showed up! I had been a witch for a long time but it was still a blow to the ego. I guess the reason mine don’t show up is because they stop by for a visit all the time. I went about double checking and checking again, what did I do wrong? I always thought it was me, always. Then it hit me, my ancestors might have reincarnated. It wasn’t that they didn’t love me or want to be with me. They had been reincarnated.

All those years, I felt like it was me and that does effect you. Then I realized how selfish I had been. Instead of feeling disappointed and unloved, I ought to have been rejoicing. They had all been reincarnated and they walk this plane as I do. Don’t do as I did. If, after all your preparation, none of your ancestors appear, don’t be sad. Instead rejoice and be proud for they are here with you on this plane. They were given the opportunity to live again.

Celebrate your ancestors, give them the honor and respect they deserve. But if no one appears, don’t be disappointed, you did nothing wrong. Your ancestors have been reincarnated. Now that is something to celebrate. They were given the opportunity to walk this plane with us. Thank the Goddess for giving them the opportunity to be reborn.

I don’t want to dim your hopes, I just want you to be prepared. No one ever told me and I guess the Goddess was the one who finally revealed to me what had happened. I have years when ancestors show up, then I have years when they don’t. But I go ahead and make all the preparations. I invite my ancestors home to visit with me for a while. When they do show up, that makes up for the year no one showed. The experience is indescribable. You have to experience for yourself. Make your preparations,  prepare your rituals and your spells. But please learn from me, if no one shows up, rejoice for their new body and soul they have been given. Rejoice because our Goddess chose them as being worthy enough to reincarnate. Never stop trying to communicate with them, never. Always make preparations for their coming. You have nothing to lose but everything in this great Universe of our to gain.

Samhain might seem like a dark time of the year. A time when death is all around us. But it is also a time to celebrate new life.

A Little Humor for Your Day – ‘Farmer’s Divorce’

Farmer’s Divorce

A farmer walked into an attorney’s office wanting to file for a divorce. The attorney asked, “May I help you?”
The farmer said, “Yea, I want to get one of those dayvorces.”
The attorney said, “Well do you have any grounds?”
The farmer said, “Yea, I got about 140 acres.” The attorney said, “No, you don’t understand, do you have a case?”
The farmer said, “No, I don’t have a Case, but I have a John Deere.”
The attorney said, “No you don’t understand, I mean do you have a grudge?”
The farmer said, “Yea I got a grudge, that’s where I park my John Deere.”
The attorney said, “No sir, I mean do you have a suit?”
The farmer said, “Yes sir, I got a suit. I wear it to church on Sundays.”
The exasperated attorney said, “Well sir, does your wife beat you up or anything?”
The farmer said, “No sir, we both get up about 4:30.”
Finally, the attorney says, “Okay, let me put it this way. WHY DO YOU WANT A DIVORCE?”
And the farmer says, “Well, I can never have a meaningful conversation with her.”

Daily Feng Shui News for Oct. 28th – ‘St. Jude’s Day’

When I was a young girl, my mother would tell me to say a prayer to Saint Jude whenever I had any sort of troubling concern. She promised that no matter how big the worry, Saint Jude would take care of it. He is, after all, the patron saint of Lost Causes and has been known to help those who are in despair. Since today is ‘St. Jude’s Day,’ I want to take the opportunity to thank him for all his aid and assistance! I have absolute faith that Saint Jude will intercede almost as soon as he is invoked. But instead of calling on him for help today, I just want to celebrate him and his graceful ways. St. Jude reminds us that we are never alone — at least not as long as he or I have anything to do about it!

Your Deck of Ancient Symbols Card for Oct. 28th is Solitude

Your Ancient Symbol Card for Today

Solitude

Solitude is represented by a  single person standing at the end of a boardwalk staring out at a vast, empty panorama. They are truly alone, but may not feel loneliness. They are at a place in their life where the need to withdraw from the our secular world is strong, because their focus should be on their inner self, their morality, and their dreams. The view before them is empty, but it is a canvas on which they may paint their future–a future restricted only by the size of their imagination and courage. For them Solitude is a choice. They chose to take the walkway that distances them from the rest of us. It is also a choice that can be undone. Just as they chose to take a path that leads them away from us, they may choose to turn around and come back at anytime.

As a daily card, Solitude suggest a period in which you need to distance yourself from those around you and explore your inner-self, what is driving your day to day life and decide if you are really on the life path that is best for you. This is a time to revitalize your spirit, and draw your dreams for the future

Pamela Coleman-Smith’s artful rendition of an “innocent Fool” archetype (Rider-Waite deck) is often used to represent Tarot in general. Early classical versions of the Fool card, however, portray quite a different character — a person driven by base needs and urges, who has fallen into a state of poverty and deprivation.

In some instances, he is made out to be a carnival entertainer or a huckster. In others, he is portrayed as decrepit and vulnerable — as the cumulative result of his delusions and failures. Not until the 20th century do you see the popular Rider-Waite image of the Fool arise — that of an innocent Soul before its Fall into Matter, as yet untainted by contact with society and all its ills.

Modern decks usually borrow from the Rider-Waite imagery. Most Fool cards copy the bucolic mountainside scene, the butterfly, the potential misplaced step that will send the Fool tumbling into the unknown. Don’t forget, however, that the earlier versions of this card represented already-fallen humanity, over-identified with the material plane of existence, and beginning a pilgrimage towards self-knowledge, and eventually, wisdom. The Fool reminds us to recognize the path of personal development within ourselves — and the stage upon that path where we find ourselves — in order to energize our

Today’s Horoscopes for Monday, October 28th

We are ready, even enthusiastic, for whatever the day offers. But today’s spontaneous Leo Moon may not be as playful as usual because she anxiously aligns with the ongoing Uranus-Pluto square that continues to rock personal and global events. We can already feel the pressure to behave in a responsible manner now as retrograde Mercury backs into somber Saturn tomorrow. We want to take action but might have to wait until we’re better prepared.

Aries Horoscope

(Mar 21 – Apr 19)

Your most creative efforts may be blocked because you take yourself so seriously today. Worrying about someone else’s reaction to your work can be enough to stop the flow of your self-expression. Dig deeply into your shadows without judgment as to what surfaces. It could take some time to figure out what to do with the material that appears now. A more casual approach to your current process removes some of the pressure and allows the energy to flow unimpeded once again.

Taurus Horoscope

(Apr 20 – May 20)

No matter how motivated you are to share your feelings today, it may be tricky, considering the current circumstances. This is one of those times when you could be better off leaving your personal issues at home. Focusing on what needs to happen at work is best done now without unpacking any extra emotional baggage that you might be carrying. Discretion is the better part of valor and also your key to success.

.

Gemini Horoscope

(May 21 – Jun 20)

Sorting out your schedule makes sense today since it’s likely that you have bitten off more than you can chew. Fortunately, your key planet Mercury is available to assist you in rearranging your calendar. Work with the retrograde energy by postponing non-critical appointments to free up enough time for you to get your chores finished. Time management could be your secret weapon.

Cancer Horoscope

(Jun 21 – Jul 22)

A social situation might make you feel awkward today because you’re not willing to set aside your internal process in order to have a good time. It’s not that you are negative about anything in particular; it’s just that you don’t want to miss an opportunity to experience an emotion that’s crucial to your growth. Although it may not be a great idea to push your agenda too hard now, saying what’s on your mind goes a long way to alleviate any hidden tension.

Leo Horoscope

(Jul 23 – Aug 22)

You have an uncharacteristic tendency to be self-critical today, since it may be impossible to live up to your own standards. You might feel like you are playing for keeps now, but it’s likely that the stakes aren’t as high as they seem. Change an intense situation into a more relaxing one by removing the competitive aspect. Once the pressure to win has been eliminated then everyone will be able to lighten up and play nicely together.

Virgo Horoscope

(Aug 23 – Sep 22)

Keeping your agenda private today may seem like a good idea, but it might not actually work out according to your plan. Your strategy could backfire as others realize you have something up your sleeve, making them less likely to trust you. Be as forthcoming as possible and you will likely receive the assistance you need. Transparency paves the road to success.

Libra Horoscope

(Sep 23 – Oct 22)

It may feel as if your friends are not as supportive as usual, which can throw you into an emotional tailspin. The reality is, however, that others are no different today; it’s you that has changed. You might expect so much now that no one could possibly fulfill all your needs. Your real work is to transform your attitude without depending on others. It all starts with believing in yourself.

Scorpio Horoscope

(Oct 23 – Nov 21)

Responsibilities weigh heavily on you today, for others expect you to carry more than your fair share. Of course, you take your work seriously and want to perform in an exemplary fashion. However, just because you have things to do doesn’t mean you can’t also have a little fun as long as you don’t flake out on anyone. Taking time to think about your plan in advance enables you to gracefully balance work with play.

Sagittarius Horoscope

(Nov 22 – Dec 21)

Your unrealistic ideas about a thrilling adventure may crash into reality today, requiring you to consider a scaled-down alternative. Don’t let discouragement get the best of you because all is not lost. Your positive attitude allows you to make the necessary changes in your thinking more easily than you expect. A mature approach to integrating a new perspective can ultimately boost your confidence and increase your chances of living out your dream.

Capricorn Horoscope

(Dec 22 – Jan 19)

You might think that a close friend doesn’t understand what you’re going through now no matter how hard you try to share your true feelings. It may seem as if there is a protective wall around your heart that prevents you from expressing your ideas with the same passion you feel for them. Don’t struggle; patience works better than anything else today since you’ll likely feel more emotionally connected in a couple of days. In the meantime, look for your answers within.
