Protection Bath – Tormentil

Protection Bath

Tormentil

Tormentil tea is used to keep malevolent magick far away. Althought its identity is often confused with the root charm High John the Conqueror, they possess no herbal relationship. Tormentil, a frequent component of European magick is actually closely related to another Hoodoo herb charm, five-finger grass(cinquefoil). Those five fingers are used in gambling magick to draw luck and money, however five fingers also create a potent sign of protection.

Pour boiling water over tormentil to make an infusion. Add this to a tub filled with warm water and then soak in the water.

Protection Bath

Protection Bath

Wodaabe

The Wodaabe are the nomadic people of Niger, living amidst settled neighbors. Their herbal knowledge is renowned throughout the region. The Wodaabe recommendation for fighting the influence of sorcery is derived from what they call the tanni tree or Balanites aegyptic. Millennia ago, the Ancient Egyptians favored oil produced from this tree for perfumery. The Wodaabe recommend bathing the body with water containing crushed tanni bark.

1. Add the crushed bark to a cauldron or pot of simmering water.

2. Allow this to simmer for at least one hour, and then allow it to cool until a comfortable temperature is reached.

3. Add to a bath filled with warm water or, for maximum strength, dip a clean cloth into the cooked decoction and bathe the body using downwards, outwards movements.

Hex-breaker Bath

Hex-breaker Bath

Agrimony Reversing

The herb, agrimony, is prized in magick circles for it ability to repel and return a hex.

Make an infusion by pouring boiling water over angelica, agrimony, chamomile blossoms, hydrangea flowers, lovage and either tormentil or five-finger grass. When it cools add everything to your bath.

Insomnia Bath

Insomnia Bath

This bath provides the soothing equivalent of milk and cookies before bedtime. Its power is proportionate to the quantity of milk used.

1. Gently warm goats’ or ideally sheep’s milk as in counting sheep.

2. Blend true almond extract and several drops of essential oil of lavender into the warm milk so that the fragrance pleases you.

3. Add to a tub filled with warm water before bedtime.

Pomander Cleanser

Pomander Cleanser

1. Make a pomander from a lime fruit.

2. Pierce it with holes and stick cloves in each hole.

3. Roll the pierced fruit in powdered orrisroot and cinnamon.

4. Tie it with red and black ribbons and hang it strategically to absorb negativity and purify the aura.

5. Replace with a new one when the scent fades.

Santeria Stationary Cleanser

Santeria Stationary Cleanser

Many Santeria space cleansings use water as a defensive mechanism, on the premise that evil and psychic toxins will dissolve in water in the same manner as salt or sugar.

1. Dissolve a square of camphor in a pan of water.

2. Keep it under the bed.

3. Change the water weekly. However, if an unpleasant odor emerges, dispose of the water immediately and replace it.

4. Disposal of the water is part of the spell: ideally it’s thrown out the back window. If this isn’t possible, flush it down the toilet but smudge the disposal area immediately.

5. Never dispose of the water in the kitchen sink or elsewhere in the house. You want to eliminate any possibility of lingering toxins.

Vinegar Cleanser

Vinegar Cleanser

Plain vinegar is cheap, easily obtainable and among the strongest cleansing agents of all:

1. Place a cup or bowl of vinegar in every room that need cleansing.

2. Replace weekly.

For intensified cleansing, add a square of camphor to the vinegar. To improve the fragrance, add a few drops of essential oil of frankincense, rose or sandalwood or blend with Florida Water.

Mother Holle’s Cleansing Bath

Mother Holle’s Cleansing Bath

Mother Holle, Germanic Queen of Witches, leads the Wild Hunt. These herbs are traditionally gathered on Midsummer’s Eve and used for intensive cleansings between winter solstice and January 6th.
Blend the following herbs:
Avens
Chamomile
Elder
Elecampane
Heartsease
Mint
Mugwort
Mullein
Saint John’s Wort
Southernwood
Vervain
Yarrow
Sage
Make an infusion by pouring boiling water over the herbs. Let it steep, then strain and add to the bath. For maximum spiritual cleansing and happiness, float heartease(wild pansy) blossoms in the water.

Nine Flowers Bath

Nine Flowers Bath

1. Place three white roses, three white carnations and three white lilies in a dish and pour hot water over them.

2. Strain out the liquid, reserving the flowers and bring them to the bathtub or shower.

3. Scrub from head to foot with one flower at a time until that flower falls apart.

4. When all nine flowers have been used, get out of the water and air dry.

5. Dress in clean clothes, don’t clean the bathtub immediately. Wait several hours or have someone else do the job.

Psychic Replenishment Bath

Psychic Replenishment Bath

This bath utilizes the following herbs:

Rosemary
Melissa (Lemon Balm)
Spearmint

These may be used in varying forms:

Make infusions of dried or fresh herbs and add to the bath.

Add essential oils to the bath.

Use a combination of fresh herbs and essential oils: although all are common garden plants, Melissa (lemon balm) is a notoriously rare and expensive essential oil.

Free Will And Reincarnation: Who Ever Said Anything About Earth?

Free Will And Reincarnation: Who Ever Said Anything About Earth?

Author: Zula

When the idea of reincarnation versus free will is addressed, nonbelievers often ask, “Why would anyone want to come back to this miserable dirtball of a planet, with all the wars and famine and violence here?” or variations of the question along those lines. I counter this question with yet another question: who says we must return to Earth?

Consider for a moment, if you will, the immensity of the universe. In our galaxy alone there are over two hundred billion stars, and Sol, our beloved sun, is only one little star in this relatively dense clump of cosmic matter. Scientists also estimate that there are one hundred billion galaxies in the entire universe. If one assumes that the Milky Way is an average-sized galaxy, as most astronomers do, that means that there are about 2 x 1022 stars in the entire universe. That is a two with twenty-two zeroes after it. I don’t even know what to call a number that big! How can anyone honestly believe that, of all those stars and all the planets orbiting those stars, Earth is the only one with life on it? The chances of such a thing are just too slim. In my opinion, it is the epitome of arrogance, ignorance, or both to claim that we have the sole privilege of life in this vast universe.

I think it is a general consensus that the spiritual realm is not bound by physical ideas like “distance,” so it is just as easy for a spirit to be on one side of the universe as the other. If that is the case, then when a soul is ready to return for another foray into the physical world, it is just as likely to end up on Earth as it is on Xar*** VII or some equally alien planet – assuming, of course, that a soul does not have a particularly strong attachment to one planet or another and chooses to return to that same planet again and again.

And even then, no one ever said we must be reincarnated in the same dimension. There is a relatively new way of thinking called the quantum theory. One aspect of this theory is called the multiverse theory, which states that every time there is a variable, the universe splits so that each possibility is realized in a different dimension. Now considering that there are variables all the way down to the atomic level, such as where an electron will be at any given point in an electron cloud; that means there are essentially an infinite number of parallel universes coexisting side by side.

Since this division of realities has gone on since the beginning of time, this means that there are universes completely different from our own. There is a universe where Hitler won World War II. There is a universe where the Aztecs are the dominant culture on the planet. There is a universe where dinosaurs never went extinct. There is a universe where Earth was never formed – this can go on and on ad infinitum. In the same way that psychic beings are not bound by distance, I believe that they are not constrained by the concept of reality as we know it. After all, if they have no bodies, why should they be stuck to move in four dimensions – back and forth, left and right, up and down, and forward (and possibly backward) in time – like the rest of us?

Of course, this is assuming that the multiverse theory is true. This, unfortunately, has not quite been determined yet. However, the fact still remains that the number of possibly inhabited planets is huge, and the number of life forms in the universe is even bigger.

Now, I will freely admit that I am a neophyte – I have known about quantum physics longer than I have known about Paganism. I would not be surprised if I made some glaring mistakes on the whole concept of reincarnation, free will, the gods and the spirit world, et cetera. If I have, I apologize for any offence right now. However, from what I know and what I have experienced, it makes sense when one thinks about it.

If one were to be reincarnated as all the types creatures on Earth, one would still get a rather limited experience. After all, all living things that we know of are carbon-based, oxygen-breathing (or carbon dioxide-breathing, in the case of plants), with only five or so senses of varying degrees of sharpness. Our mental capacities are also somewhat limited, regardless of what form we assume. Imagine how different a perspective one would get as, say, a creature made of pure energy that glided serenely through space, a species that had mastered time travel, or even a super-intelligent shade of blue! The lives of these creatures must be completely different than anything that we can possibly experience on Earth; I doubt anyone could even imagine it with any sort of accuracy.

The purpose of reincarnation, if I understand correctly, is to allow a soul to gain wisdom from its physical experiences. The only way to gain true wisdom, in my opinion, is to come in contact with as many different ideas, sensations, etc. as possible. Only then can one develop a truly informed philosophy. Considering the vastness of the universe, and considering that Earth and what we experience here is just a tiny speck of all the possibilities, then the only possible way for the soul to gain true wisdom is to traverse the expanse of the universe and experience all different possible forms of life there are to be had.

With that in mind, free will takes on another level of significance. When one dies, one has the entire universe at one’s metaphysical fingertips. One can literally become anything in one’s wildest dreams. Ever wondered what it’s like to be a velociraptor? To travel through space at the speed of light? To have twelve arms? All the curiosities, all the musings that one has ever had can be answered – if one chooses to find out.

How Could We Not Come Back?

How Could We Not Come Back?

Author: Cavalary

When it comes to answers to that nagging “Why are we here?” question, everyone has one. For some, it may be that we simply are: live this life to the fullest because it’s all you have. Others may think this is the only physical life we have, but that afterwards our souls will spend eternity in either Heaven or Hell. For yet others, we’re just souls having one of our many physical experiences, on a path to something greater. If for some reason it’s not already understood, I belong to the last group.

Since this article is about reincarnation, I will not discuss at length the first two ideas mentioned above. The first denies the existence of the soul, which works for the very scientifically-minded, but is unacceptable for people who have had experiences proving its existence. I’m not talking about something spectacular, but simply experiencing true feelings that won’t go away or intuition. The ideas put forth by the second group may work for them and are certainly a good deterrent for some people who would not hesitate to harm others out of their own free will, but they don’t make sense. Why would a Supreme Being keep creating souls, giving them one shot at physical life, then “filing” them away in one of two places according to some specific criteria (places that will also have to keep expanding to accommodate all these souls), then creating new ones and starting over… and over… and over? Also, harm is subjective. You can’t define what will harm and what won’t in general, yet “sins” seem to be defined like that. I’m not saying it’s impossible; we can’t know what’s there while we’re still here, but that it wouldn’t make sense.

Now back to the topic at hand. Bear with me, as this might be a bit odd. I had my ideas to write about but suddenly an analogy came to mind: souls as atoms in the “body” of The One. I decided to go along with it and I think I’ll even surprise myself a few times by the time I’ve finish writing this. But first, my thoughts on the matter of reincarnation and where does free will come in.

Everything starts somewhere, and souls are no different. Being nothing more than a clump of matter from a higher plane with a will of their own, they have to start their learning process somewhere. As you don’t give a child a shotgun and send him/her out on the street, souls are not allowed immediately to enter life forms that wield the most power in their world. On Earth, those would be humans. Therefore I believe that “new” souls would most likely be found in certain animals that have a degree of awareness, freedom of action and certain learning abilities. That may mean most mammals and maybe some birds, but since it seems natural that a soul may choose a life form that’s less advanced than it’s “allowance”, it doesn’t mean others can’t have souls. It may be that the most enlightened would choose a lifetime stuck in the oddest animal (or plant), just to experience it. This may also explain the children that die shortly after birth. Souls that wanted to experience physical life again, but a suitable body was not yet available, so they were given just a short glimpse of it, kind of in compensation. (I don’t believe a soul enters a body before birth–it would make no sense. At most it could enter it when the brain starts to develop, but certainly not at the moment of conception.)

The apparently popular concept of souls of recently deceased humans being reincarnated in things like cockroaches, as punishment for their past life, makes no sense. What would that soul be able to experience like that? Who would it be able to help? And, more importantly, what would it be able to learn, a cockroach’s brain being what it is? Isn’t the purpose of a soul’s physical experience to learn and help others along their own paths?

I read an idea somewhere, some years ago, that stuck. I modified it in time, as I learned new things, but it may yet be oversimplified, and I’m looking for ways to “fill the gaps” (the idea that struck me when I decided to write this would be one of them). It “feels” right though.

The theory was that there are ten levels a soul can attain and three planes of existence it can inhabit. Of course, the levels give a general idea about the soul’s knowledge and power and might be useful to know for us here, but I doubt they are really separated so clearly on the higher planes. At the first level, for the specific case of Earth, a soul is incarnated in something non-human. Besides not being generally able to wreak as much havoc with a mistake, the less complex brain of the creature they’re incarnated in makes for less interference caused by wrong decisions, actually allowing the body and soul to maintain a stronger bond. After it evolves past that, still on Earth, a soul will take a human body for the next three levels.

There are major differences between a soul that reached the second level of enlightenment and one that reached the fourth, a fact that should be obvious when learning about the people around us. People with second level souls might have a hard time with feelings, reject the notion of spirituality and so on. Third level souls have some knowledge and power to influence the brain, so the “symptoms” might be adhering to some form of organized religion but not putting much effort into finding your true spiritual path, recognizing feelings and intuition and acting upon them when suitable but not giving them the proper importance, etc. At fourth level, the person would come across as enlightened compared to the rest of the human race (either that or a complete lunatic, depending on who’s making the assessment; it is also possible they’ll really become one, if their brain is unable to handle all the “feedback” it’s getting from the higher planes). They know this physical world is not all there is, know everything is connected, give the proper importance to feelings, learn to recognize signs and act accordingly, put effort into finding their spiritual path, might be able to briefly access the higher planes and affect the physical one in ways that might seem strange to many, etc.

It is possible to advance more than one level in a lifetime, when a person finds a means of enlightenment that would have been hard to predict at the time of their birth, but a far more common occurrence would be souls that don’t advance at all, or even forget what they had previously learned. It is also important to realize that each of these types of behavior is the appropriate one for that person’s level and each has a role in this world. Pushing them along the path when they’re not yet ready helps no one. As a final note on this matter, the ones that really stand out, the true masters, are most likely souls that are at least at the fifth level, but chose to come back in order to help the rest of us.

Since, at these levels, a soul can only understand and manipulate the physical plane, it is pretty much powerless between death and reincarnation. Therefore, until the next suitable body becomes available, it will spend a certain amount of time (that need not have anything to do with the time that passes here on Earth, since they’re different planes of existence) practically in limbo. It is possible that during this time it will be shown glimpses of future lessons it should learn or of past ones that it failed to understand. Since it needs a body to do pretty much anything, it may get back to Earth and, at great expense, attempt communication, offer help or simply wreak havoc out of frustration.

A soul reaches the fifth level when it has learned pretty much all it can learn out of physical experiences. At this moment it is no longer required to get back into a physical body in order not to be completely powerless in limbo, but its powers to affect the astral plane are minimal at best. While it’s struggling to learn how that plane “works”, it may choose to come back to the physical one, either as a manifestation of itself or reincarnated, either because it wants to help others, because it wants to experience things again or simply because it wants to feel it can have some effect on its surroundings once more. As it advances further, it reaches what might just be what is referred to as the Summerlands. It gains the ability to bend its surroundings to its will on the astral plane. This ability might be limited at the sixth level, being able to create only small areas, initially little more than dreams that it can lose itself in, then more and more solid. However, a seventh level soul can create whole planets or even solar systems to live in if it wishes. Souls with the same views and desires might find themselves shaping the same world, brought together by their similar thoughts. Living on a world that you create exactly how you like, with only the ones that want the same things, isn’t that a nice image? But I guess it’s the only proper reward after such a long learning process. Just remember to check up on the “younger” ones from time to time after you get there.

If you’re content with that, you can just stay there at the seventh level, enjoy a life of your own choosing and hopefully lend a helping hand to the “younger” ones from time to time. But some souls will realize this is yet another learning experience, not just fun and games. Add that realization, some guidance from the ones that already achieved at least level eight and a lot of time and effort and you’ll end up with a soul that managed not just to gain some more knowledge, but actually change its condition, become something greater than it ever was and enter a higher plane. (Remember that a soul is native to the astral plane, never a physical entity, it simply lacks the knowledge to affect its surroundings there at first. Therefore this is the first major change of the soul’s very being.) This plane is the highest that may be accessed through these means, but it may not be the highest that exists.

A soul reaches level eight when it has completed its transformation. It will find itself in an entirely new world, with great powers to affect both of the lower planes. However, just as it was at level five, its ability to affect its own surroundings is minimal. Can be frustrating to go from so much to so little, can’t it? Maybe, but, by entering this higher plane, a soul will finally be in direct contact with what we call gods. They’re right there, communication is as easy as walking up to one and saying something (not literally, of course, as walking and speaking are activities done on the physical plane). Yes, not all of them might be there–remember what I said about a possible higher plane–but certainly all the ones the soul somehow communicated with so far will be. Such a soul will be cared for in order to feel comfortable, but it will also have jobs to do. It always did, but this is the first time they will be communicated directly and it will be aware of them at all times. These jobs might be to act as guides for seventh (and, rarely, sixth) level souls seeking to attain the same level, provide comfort and encouragement for fifth level souls, possibly create new souls and guide them in their choice of a world to be incarnated in and whatever else needs to be done. These souls will rarely venture all the way back to the physical plane and, considering all their duties and also their need to continue improving their abilities on their current plane, who can blame them?

However, when they do manifest themselves here, the results are awe-inspiring. Level nine souls might be what we call demigods. Their powers to affect the lower planes are great, but their ability to affect their surroundings is still somewhat limited. They provide level eight souls with what they need to stay content and also act as mentors. A tenth level soul can bend all three planes to its will, but knows better. It has the most power and the least duties. It is the most it can be (if a higher plane exists, it can’t reach it), so no more need to work to improve itself either (but it can still learn alternate means of getting to the same level). It watches the “younger” ones, laughs and cries with them, offers a helping hand, a gentle caress or a swift kick in the butt wherever appropriate. Such souls can, and often do, help us, but, for all their power, they’re not omnipresent. We have to call to get their attention, and we have to know how to call for our cries to get that far.

It is important to know that all souls on this third plane of existence can receive energy from the ones on the lower planes who worship them. They need a lot of it to perform their duties and might not be willing to spend any on you unless you send enough to them before asking for their help. We send raw energy, they receive it and use it as needed at the moment. Then, when we ask for their help, they send some of it back in a form that will answer our call. Some might help a few times even if all we do is ask, but even the most benevolent entity will eventually choose to ignore someone who only asks for help, never sending anything back. It seems only fair, doesn’t it?

Still on that topic, if you give an entity a name and worship it, eventually all that energy will accumulate somewhere and will get a will of its own. You probably won’t be able to do this alone in a lifetime, but get enough people and do it for long enough and you might just create even a tenth level soul! That’s a very risky thing to do, as it would have the power but not the required experience to use it properly. No one can predict what it will do…

I got beyond the topic of this article after I mentioned fifth level souls, but it wouldn’t have been nice to leave you hanging there. Now back to the point, “Why do we keep coming back to this insanity called Earth?” Maybe because it’s the only place we know. A new soul is allowed to choose a world for its first incarnation and we chose this one. After the death of our first body, we go back with some new knowledge. All of that knowledge is from this Earth; it would make little sense anywhere else! Choosing, at any point of our development, to live a life on another world would be very confusing. The experience gained here would conflict with the life we’d have there, past memories would make no sense and so on. A soul may reach level eight and not even know for sure there are other worlds, as it would only be surrounded by others from the same background. (Level ten souls might not be able to go further, but they have an infinity of new worlds to experience if they wish.)

Choice is there every step of the way. We choose to come back because we want to learn more, because we want to help others, because we want to experience new things (or old things that we liked), or, if we’re not yet at least fifth level, because we’re tired of being powerless in limbo. However, I don’t think we choose the body in which we are reincarnated; it is assigned to us from what’s available. Keep that in mind when you want to have a baby; see what life you can offer it and what genetic traits you have to pass on. It is a home for a soul that most likely needs it to continue on its path. If you realize the body you can create just won’t be good enough for that purpose, don’t do it! Time should make no difference for souls, they can wait. If they have to notice a certain amount of time to have passed between death and rebirth, they will notice exactly that much, regardless of whether here on Earth that time would be 20 seconds or 2000 years. There don’t have to be more and more bodies, but they have to be, for lack of a better term, of better quality.

Now about that idea that struck me when I decided to write this…

Just like atoms, souls can form or break apart, but destroying one takes an enormous amount of energy. It is, however, possible that “new” souls don’t simply appear, but are actually created by other souls, after they have reached a certain level of enlightenment and can “assemble” one from the “free” matter on their plane of existence. To continue the analogy, thinking that the Supreme Being, by whichever name you want to call it, would put effort into creating souls is like saying that we put together protons, neutrons and electrons to create the atoms that make up our bodies. However, unlike us with our atoms, I believe The One is aware of our existence and development.

Now, think of yourself as a cell, with your soul being an atom of a very special element somewhere inside that cell. Imagine that single atom somehow “powering” the cell, which would die without its energy. Since this element is unlike any of the others around it, chances of bonding are very slim naturally. But what if we think and live our lives in a certain way, in strong connection with our souls? It would be like the cell starts generating certain substances that this atom might bond with, while also functioning in a certain way to facilitate such a bonding. The newly formed molecule would “power” the cell even better and, upon the cell’s death, might just hold together until it enters the next one. There it would continue to improve itself while also helping the cell, then do the same for the next, and the one after that, and so on.

The brain stores information. A soul might remember that it loved, that it feared, that it was violently thrown out of its previous body, but anything more specific will have to be “given” in a way that it can “bond” with that bit of information. This might explain why we don’t remember our past lives: We didn’t know how to memorize them!

As a side note, think of relationships in these terms. Two (or, why not, more) cells bond, exchange information, useful substances and so on. If this bond is strong enough, the energy generated by these atoms (or molecules) will also be exchanged between the cells. If it’s similar, the cells will be able to stay together in harmony; all other incompatibilities can be resolved in time, assuming each cell responds properly to the energy pulses it receives. But if it isn’t, the bond will have to be severed or both cells will eventually be destroyed. Of course, there can’t be that many kinds of energy generated by these atoms, so you don’t have a single soul mate, but you should listen to your soul and it will tell you from the start if a “bond” can be sustained.

Since all our souls are part of the Supreme Being, improving ourselves, turning from single atoms to complex and useful molecules, improves the whole organism. We’re all connected. By making ourselves better we help everyone else. Of course, if we can guide others along their path it’s even better, but remember that they need to advance at their own pace. You can always help when you’re asked, or express your opinion and give advice even when you’re not, but you may (and must) interfere more than that only to prevent harm, to stop the ones that try to hold others back from their path.

If I didn’t express myself clearly enough, I’m sorry. It’s the first time I’m putting most of these ideas “on paper”. As for the soul as an atom theory, as I said, it struck me when I decided to write this article; plenty of work left to make it “fit in” with the rest.

Life’s A Bitch And Then You Die…Again?!?

Life’s A Bitch And Then You Die…Again?!?

Author: Reni

It’s true: life can be hard and cruel.

An intelligent person might wonder why anyone would ever want to go around again—perhaps for endless lifetimes. Ouch!

You’d think the hard facts of our birth and death alone would tend to deter most energy Beings from ever wanting a body again. Of course, there are rewards . . .

But in order to answer the why of reincarnation we must first answer the wherefore:

Is there such a thing and how does it work?

Answer these questions and you have answered the eternal question: The Secret of Life.

Know now, from the beginning, that the answer comes down to belief.

Yet, some beliefs are better than others. Or put another way, we can’t say for certain what the meaning of life is but we can get a pretty good idea what it is not.

We start by applying reason, that glorious/terrible faculty that, above all else, sets us apart from all Creation. Without reason one belief is no better or worse than any other. As Pagans and Wiccans we know that just isn’t true, at least not for us.

First, I believe it’s rational and reasonable to assume, for the moment, the probability that there is a purpose for our existence and the existence of the worlds around us.

Science does not generally share this view. Science dictates that reason forbids anything not provable by science, that spiritual beliefs of any kind are not reasonable. This mandates a mechanistic existence that blinks out like a light bulb when it’s over—man and woman the same DNA as the worms that eat us in the end.

However, if this were the case I wouldn’t be sitting here writing to you at all but at best, locked in a life and death struggle with another bacteria or hostile slime mold. Probably wouldn’t exist at all. None of us.

Okay, so what about the Theory of Evolution?

You know, take an infinite number of monkeys and an infinite number of typewriters and one of them will come up with the complete works of Shakespeare.

Doesn’t Evolution prove that the biggest baddest meanest microorganism gets to pass on its genes and that’s the real reason why we’re here? Isn’t that what the law of the jungle is all about? And as such isn’t it logical that this truth is the only truth worth knowing and that the only reason we’ve banded together as clever monkeys is to further the advancement of our genes at the expense of all others? That’s what science teaches.

And in that case, isn’t reincarnation or an afterlife in any form is just wishful thinking?

Fact is, though evolution is generally correct it has its problems. I’m not saying that the earth is 7318 years old (in 2005) as the Bible (Septuagint) would have it and that the devil plants fossils in the ground to fool the gullible. But there just hasn’t—by science’s own admission—been enough time for random mutation and natural selection to produce the miracle that is you and I and the world we live in. Essentially, we don’t actually have an infinite number of typewriting monkeys; not by a long shot.

Nor is any explanation forthcoming for why we would even care if we passed on our genes. Procreation is often the biggest burden an organism can undertake. If you doubt this you probably haven’t tried to raise a teenager.

Without a burning need to pass on its genes an organism could not, would not evolve.

What would likely happen if a bunch of inorganic chemicals started reproducing for some unlikely reason is that the primitive life forms that resulted—having the basic need to consume other life forms for fuel—would have the earth’s first and last donnybrook until the one remaining starved to death.

Evolution requires both a mechanism to play itself out—natural selection—and a driving force, without which we go nowhere. It’s like having the means to produce a boat or a car but no earthly reason to go anywhere. Why build it? Why build us?

Okay then, have we at least given ourselves some room to reason that doesn’t fly in the face of the truths of the physical sciences? If not, I suggest reading Richard Dawkins wonderful books, The Ancestors Tale and Climbing Mount Improbable. Dawkins is a brilliant Social Biologist who holds to the mechanistic model of life, the one that precludes an afterlife in any form. Evolution is the whole truth with no need for any other power to make it happen. See if he makes his case for you.

If, on the other hand, you are ready to move onward and upward let’s consider that the life that is you and I carries an esoteric spark of some kind—if only as an irresistible drive to transcend the needs of the individual organism. That’s what’s needed.

Perhaps there may even be a plan at work, though what that plan is remains to be seen, even to whether or not it can really be a plan in the strict sense of the word if there is no specific Creator acknowledged, since some belief systems do and some systems don’t have a God/dess in charge—not even a Sacred “IT”. Though I find that impossible to imagine—like trying to think of Nothing.

Therefore, Whatever is out there pulling the strings may or may not be sentient—in the way we perceive but something unimaginably powerful nonetheless. Something that may even require a higher order of Being than all of us Twenty-First Century humanoids could muster with our combined reason to comprehend.

All we can assume at this point is that we don’t have the answers, and probably never will. Perhaps even if there is or is not something positively absolutely definitely going on behind the Cosmic Scenes—or Not.

About the only thing we can say for sure is that we can’t say anything for sure.

. . . The mind wobbles…

Just the same, we’ve reasoned together this far and come up with one fact: science does not have all the answers. That’s the part to remember.

It’s also worth remembering, that neither do we.

In that vein let’s take a look at the other side of the Mobius strip: The Divine Spark.

But let’s skip over lightly the information that’s already out there. Namely, that the vast majority of religions do or did at one time believe in reincarnation, though the eastern philosophies speak of “Metamorphosis”, in that life can emerge anew in any living form, up or down the evolutionary ladder. While we tend to think of climbing only in an upwards direction, which may well be true considering the general direction of Evolution, from the elegant simplicity of the helium atom to all of this around us both, you and I this minute having evolved out of pure Energy—truly awesome! Just a couple of quick ideas:

Jesus most likely presumed reincarnation, as did the Kabalists. Starting with Matthew 22:23 Jesus debates the Sadducees (who deny the immortality of the soul) with the Pharisees who held the majority opinion, that of reincarnation. It’s a Pharisee who asks Jesus if he is Elijah come again. In addition, the Apostles continued to preach the immortality and rebirth of the soul for nearly four hundred years.

Then Emperor Constantine, after his conversion to Christianity (and his subsequent conversion of Christianity to a predator religion Jesus would not recognize) abandoned the concept of reincarnation (Google: “Emperor+Constantine”).

Constantine did this when he instigated the “heaven or hell” model that Pagans so soundly disagree with. The problem was that once Constantine insisted that he was the “voice of god” and that they had better do what he said or burn in hell he had to abolish reincarnation. You can’t very well be burning in hell and show up alive again.

So we’ve seen that science cannot even start to disprove reincarnation and that the majority of peoples throughout all time before that believed in reincarnation. Unfortunately, that doesn’t prove reincarnation exists or why. We’d be done now if it did.

Nor does it prove anything that actor John Ford and historical martyr Jane Evans, to name just two of many, had highly credible past life regressions.

But let me tell of my personal experiences with past life regressions. They aren’t as flashy as John Ford’s but credible in a different way. One I wouldn’t have guessed at the onset.

It started when I took a class in Parapsychology at Northeastern. Our group proposed to test reincarnation using hypnosis and a subject that was informed that she had other lives. I was to do the hypnosis.

First we took the subject to the head of the Psych Dept. to provide tests and evaluation as to how likely it was that she would fabricate past lives. He assured me that it was not in her nature to consciously lie.

At first I found it hard to induce a trance in her. Then she showed me how wrong I could be about people—an important lesson to learn young—and dived down like she had been pulled under by a dark wave of sleep.

I turned on the tape recorder and cast her further back and down, back to her past lives.

She started to tell me what was going on in front of her and to mention every item in a ratty back yard of undetermined origin. He was sitting on a mud wall watching a bug (yes, “he;” people can apparently change sex in past lives). I won’t tell you all he said (unless you’re an insomniac and want to be bored to sleep). Just that he described every little detail in real time. When I would prompt him to tell what else was happening he would turn his head in a new direction and describe something equally mundane.

Finally I got him to fast forward to something important that was happening. I didn’t have all day to waste looking at someone else’s idea of beautiful.

Turns out the only important thing that ever happened to this person after he was born was his death. Even that was boring: an infected wound. I was tempted to regress her even further to see if being totally boring was maybe a trend or if she had been shot out of a cannon three times daily in one life, or something, and wanted things to be very, very quiet for a few lives.

So he died and his soul floated up towards the ceiling with a woman crying and praying below in the light of four candles at the head and foot of his little death bed—never made it out of childhood.

Up he goes, through the ceiling and into the night. Cut! New Scene.

But instead of arriving in the lifetime we share she’s giving birth in a clump of brush in some Asian country, probably hundreds of years ago still. This is where I get off, I thought. What chance does an ancient Asian woman have of being fulfilled in her lifetime? Unless her idea of fulfillment is giving birth in the rough.

But what impressed me most was not what she had to say. The words were simple, those a child would use—I would have expected that. What got me was the one-to-one time frame. Every minute of her telling was a minute of her living the past life (and a minute of mine unfortunately). I doubt in my wildest dream as a writer I could capture every detail of a scene I wasn’t actually looking at without once tripping up. I don’t know any who can (or would want to).

For instance, planting a new scrubby cactus where one had already been described. I found myself believing her. And that’s something I hardly did in those days (question everything!) along with my usual impatience.

I still question everything but I’ve learned that the journey requires much patience as well.

The next and last experience was with a dear friend of mine who always went into a heavy death fixation every year after Christmas.

One day I hypnotized her into a past life. I thought that maybe if she realized she’d be back she wouldn’t fear going so much.

This kind of backfired because her last life had an unpleasant end. But what I hadn’t expected was catching something between her lives. I had known this woman for years but had never heard her speak in such a serene voice full of confidence and grace. It was definitely her . . . but perfected. Wow!

And when I brought her back to the present, she no longer feared death in the slightest—despite the nasty death she had discovered for herself the time before.

Did I somehow use hypnosis to con her? If I did, her new attitude gave her the welcome addition of three more months to enjoy every winter of her life. Nor was her apprehension of a terrible death to come true.

Years later she died instantly, painlessly, totally unexpectedly—if horribly—as I watched the World Trade Towers burn and crumble. No trace was ever found but I hope to see her again someday.

Anyway, that’s it. Two of my personal experiences and a synopsis of what’s available online and in books. All the evidence is anecdotal, of course.

It’s up to you: does it ring truer than the ‘evolution just happened’ theory of science that makes life out to be nothing more than animated chemicals? Or the “life is a test” dogma of the Christian faiths, that makes us begging sinners on our knees? Or whether the clues point more towards a divine explanation? I won’t hold you to it.

But if you’re still with me it’s a good time to see what we can learn from popular religions and which ones make the most sense. Again, there is a great deal of theology and doctrine available everywhere since the dawn of recorded history (and beyond) so we won’t go into details here.

Basically, what all the beliefs in reincarnation have in common is that they all believe that our true selves are energy Beings, without physical existence, that leave the body to find a new home upon our deaths.

Wiccans and Pagans generally believe that there is a rest stop on the cycle of life and death called the Summerlands where we go to await our next life.

The Summerlands are where we’re on sabbatical, out to pasture (but not permanently). We are only there to rest and visit with our friends and family (and cherished animal pals) that have passed before us and to be on hand to welcome new arrivals. Often, the first thing we feel after death—not as a physical sensation but as an emotion—is the loving comfort of someone we’ve lost, a mother, a father, a wife, or a child—often more than one lost lover all at once—holding us in their astral arms, until we are no longer afraid—especially if our death had been a bumpy ride.

The first thing we “see” after our death is the parting of the gray rain clouds of the mortal world opening on a silver-blue ocean. Then, far off in the distance, the white cliffs shining in the sunlight. Above the shoreline green, green grass and rolling hills lay beneath us. Here we come to rest; here we will find our loved ones standing near an orchard in full bloom, petals falling like pure white snow.

Then we may “walk” arm and arm down the lane of whatever our personal heaven feels like and more loved ones come and greet us. And everybody is arriving and embracing, laughing and crying, cheering. It has been a long haul but we’re finally here, in Summerlands. Joy!

From this point on I can only give you my personal vision of Summerlands. You will probably have a different scenario in mind.

First you smell it, the green everywhere, the new mown hay. But not really smell or see as you did with your old body. Now you are the essence of green, its truest nature beyond spectral radiation exciting optic nerves. I am one with green! And one with the Beings of my kith and kin at the same time (if time had meaning in the Summerlands). It’s as if we’re leaves in the forest when the wind blows warm from the south, rustling ever so softly, knowing it all in the only way possible: Pure Universal Unity.

Suddenly, everything becomes crystal clear; it all makes sense—finally! And now we are the soft breeze as it swirls through the starry night, caressing every living thing with our life. Yes, we are life, all life, a part and the whole all at once. Not the flesh but the life within.

And here, in Summerlands, we get the ultimate do-over with the very person we may have clashed with when we were flesh. Yes, it was, after all, the flesh that had blinded us to who we really are and who we are to each other always. We should have known better. Ah, but there’s always next time—perhaps up a rung or two on that old evolutionary ladder—evolving towards what/where/who we cannot say from our vantage point here today. We know only where we came from, not where we are heading.

Perhaps we had an unsuccessful life and we end up a rung or two down. It’s a possibility.

But my personal belief is that judging solely by the direction of our evolution we must generally evolve to a higher order Slime mold doesn’t get to be president in one lifetime (well, sometimes). We have to keep living over and over again until we get our existence and the existence of our fellow beings to where we’re going. Some say we are reborn until our souls are purified. But I believe we are doing the best we can for who we are so far. There’s nothing impure about it. True transcendence is in the journey as well as the destination.

Finally, we’re ready to take another crack at it—Life—to have a body again, to feel instead of just remembering it all, the joy and the pain.

Not only is rebirth irresistible it’s the only game in town. There’s only so much you can learn from remembering the past. You have to get mortal to transcend.

And that’s the answer. I warned you, it’s speculative and highly personal.

We live more than one life to refine the process, in one way or another, time and time again.

We are on the path to we know not where, only that it’s somehow the Will of Creation—if only ipso facto.

If you doubt this, check in with your own heart. We know emotionally when we are headed in the right direction, though we are often lost in the convolutions of our mind.

The proof is that in looking back it’s easy to see that if we had listened to that little song in our heart we would have been much better off. When we are on the right path we feel it. When we are off track we feel bad, somehow, even if what we are doing is something we want.

In that way, happiness tells us we are doing the Divine Will of the Universe.

Why then would anyone what to live more than one life? Again, it comes down to the personal:

Why would you want to live even once? (Always presuming you have a choice)

What makes you happy?

Only you can answer that, and only for yourself.

So, may it be.

Following Our Ancestors’ Path

Following Our Ancestors’ Path

Author: Gloria Gypsy

Modern Druids must research what Druidism was or is and apply it to our modern times. A modern Druid’s role does not differ much from that of his or her ancient ancestors, although Druids of today face many more challenges in teaching and giving service to the world. Many people have forgotten the ways of they’re ancestors. They are not at one with nature or their spiritual selves. Many people live in crowded urban areas and have lost touch with their bonds to nature. Today’s Druid I believe would spend more time working toward caring for our planet and nature since pollution, over-population and technology have begun to destroy our very life force. Today more than ever we need the Wisdom of the Druid.

One important role for a Druid today would be in preserving our wildlife. So much of our natural woodlands, prairies, etc., have been lost to pave the way for more urban areas. When we destroy a forest or field or what have you we are also destroying the wildlife that lives in that area. As an example, in certain parts of the United States, Wolves, Coyotes and Bears are seen more and more in urban areas looking for food. This is because we are taking away they’re natural habitats and they have nowhere left to go.

And so a modern Druid may join a committee that is dedicated to saving our wildlife or forests. He or she may work toward animal sanctuaries or for a national forest. In preserving and caring for nature we are giving back to our life force. Without it we would not exist.

The Druids were a people of integrity and service. In the past they were healers, judges, priests, poets. But unlike most people today they were all these things and also in tune with spirituality and honor. Today we still seek wisdom and must strive to give as well as receive knowledge, to lend our services to our communities and families (tribe); to nature/the gods; to our planet and also to our self.

Society today lacks much integrity and truth. People are not honest with themselves let alone as a culture or community. The modern Druid has a responsibility not only to him or herself but to they’re community as well to practice and teach the lessons of truth, honor, integrity and love. Without these virtues we are not true to ourselves, each other and our god/s. Passing this knowledge on gives us hope for the next generation and those generations yet to come. “We must give of our selves so that we may receive of ourselves.” (Searles O’Dubhain)

A Druid as teacher could be a father or mother teaching they’re children, judges or law enforcement teaching these lessons by example, and teachers themselves in schools teaching in they’re specialized fields. If we learn and live as the ancient Druids did we are able to communicate on all levels of human awareness, we are the caretakers of nature, and the teachers of wisdom and spirituality. We are enlightening others and ourselves, we are making our lives and our world a better place. We are improving the quality of life and our spirituality. We must research what Druidism was or is and apply it to our modern time.

“The value of a life is great but it is small next to the value of a spirit.” (Searles O’Dubhain)

Following I offer a meditation for speaking with the spirit of place as an example on how to get started becoming one with the earth and learning from the wisdom of the earth.

Meditation: Speaking with the Spirit of Place…

  • Sit down near, preferably touching, that with which you plan to speak with. If it is a tree, perhaps face it, placing your hands on it. Try to avoid animate things such as animals and moving bodies of water until you get better at this. Otherwise the movement will likely break your concentration.
  • Close your eyes or keep them open, depending on what works best and how you feel most comfortable.
  • Calm your mind, and quiet it in an attitude of meditation. Any thoughts that enter, simply acknowledge them as a thought, and push them aside, returning to your concentration.
  • Focus on your breathing. If you find it difficult to quiet your mind, perhaps try chanting (to yourself or aloud) a mantra, play some soft music if you can. Anything to focus your attention.
  • Breath in for a count of four, hold it for two, then out for a count of four. Keep doing this until you feel that your mind is peaceful and calm enough.
  • Focus on moving your consciousness into what you’re trying to speak with. I’ll use the example of a tree. It is easier if you are touching it, and I will assume your hands will be on it. Adapt this as you see fit, however. Move your awareness down into your arms, allowing it to travel to your hands, and then your finger tips. You will find it will slip into the tree with as much ease as it went down your body. Always remember to get permission before moving your consciousness into something that is not your own. If you feel that you are being allowed in, then proceed; otherwise do not.
  • Allow yourself to orient in the tree. When you feel ready attempt to speak with it. If you do not yet feel ready, simply sit with it and hold off until you do feel ready.
  • Think about your own relationship with the Land, what you feel is appropriate, and what you feel needs to be changed. Think on why you should change these things, and why certain things are in right relationship.

Hello, I’m A Witch!

Hello, I’m A Witch!

Author: Greengate

I’m sure you all recognize this: you enter a crowded room, a party is going on and people are busy talking to each other over a glass of something, exchanging pleasantries they don’t really mean. They all wear the uniform: the expensive cocktail dress for the ladies, the suit that tries hard to look expensive, for the men. Everyone but one lady conforms to the norm. Black long hair flowing freely over her shoulders, long skirt, heavy ethnic jeweler, a large purple shawl hugging her shoulders, a faint Patchouli aroma in her vicinity. When you see her, you can immediately tell something about her, even if you didn’t exchange one word with her before. She can only be one of two things: an eccentric artist or a Neo-Pagan.

With a glass of wine in your hand, you work your way towards her, hoping to engage her in conversation. The sneaky thought of verifying your suppositions about her drives you. You exchange meaningless cliché’s and you seize the opportunity to ask:

“You have a wonderful sense of style. Are you an artist? I’m sure you paint.”

“No. I’m a Witch.”

She will probably tell you this with a firm voice and look directly at you, waiting for a reaction. But what should your reaction be? What did this lady actually tell you? I know what I believe a Witch to be, but let’s first consult one of the most used online resources for English words: the Merriam-Webster Online Thesaurus. According to it, a Witch is:

1. a woman believed to have often harmful supernatural powers (in the old days women were sometimes accused of being Witches and using evil magic to make the crops fail or an animal die suddenly). Synonyms: enchantress, hag, hex, sorceress. Related Words: charmer, conjuror (or conjurer), enchanter, necromancer, voodoo; magician, sorcerer, warlock, wizard.
2. a mean or ugly old woman (heaven help you if your ball lands on that Witch’s lawn) — see CRONE.
3. a person skilled in using supernatural forces (freakish storms that were once thought to be the work of Witches) — see MAGICIAN.

I can’t even begin to count on how many levels the good folk from Merriam-Webster are wrong. And not only are they wrong, but the definitions they give are insulting and rooted in hateful prejudice. But because I’m a Pagan who just had a good cup of coffee and a piece of Belgian chocolate, I’m going to be generous and give them the benefit of the doubt. Perhaps they aren’t deliberately ignorant, just misinformed. And, boy are they wrong! Every word and every implication of their explanations misses the point and is just about as accurate as a drunk who tries to put the key in the keyhole. I wonder if someone actually took the trouble to talk with people about this subject or, judging by the 15th century explanations, they had a séance and summoned none other than Tomás de Torquemada, the first grand Inquisitor, and asked him for his definition of this term.

I could go on for a long time fuming and stewing in my own juices, but there is no point in doing that. Instead, for the benefit of Merriam-Webster’s editor, and for those who don’t know what Witchcraft means, I’m going to describe it’s meaning, as this Pagan understands it. A Witch is a practitioner of the magickal arts. Nothing more, nothing less… I know this is a short definition, but it tells you all you need to know. If the editor of Merriam-Webster wants a more detailed definition, he would have to pay me in order to get it.

Now, let’s return for a moment to that exotic lady who introduced herself to you as a Witch. Why would anybody tell you that? Witchcraft is not something that defines a person, it is something a person knows and practices. Witchcraft is a tool that can be employed by someone to better his life. It does not tell you anything about the religious convictions that person holds, nothing about the morals or ethics that person may adhere to, nothing about the character that person has. So, I ask again: why would anybody introduce themselves with such a statement? It is like saying “Hello, my name is (fill in name here) and I know how to ride a bike.” It is as ridiculous as that.

Some of my fellow Pagans wear this word as a badge of honour. I completely understand the sentiment behind it, and I believe it is completely wrong. It is about time we put aside our differences; it is about time Pagans find common ground and define this word that defines us. In order to do this, I’m going to share some of my thoughts with you.

Witchcraft is a tool.

Witchcraft is nothing more than a tool, always at the disposal of those who have the knowledge to use it. This knowledge can be acquired from different sources. A spell cast in the proper way and with conviction will work every time. It doesn’t matter what your moral or ethical convictions are, it doesn’t matter what you want to achieve. If you are able to raise enough energy and successfully apply your will to it, the spell will be effective. Of course, everything we put out there will find its way back to the point of origin, amplified or not. There is no free lunch. One way or another, a bill will always be presented to you.

Witchcraft is not a religion.

In the minds of many people Witchcraft is synonymous with religion. This confusion between the two must be clarified. Witchcraft exists independent of ANY religion. You can do magick and belong to Judaism, Islam, Christianity, Buddhism, Hinduism, etc. You can even be Agnostic or Atheist and practice the craft. So when you say, “I’m a Witch,” you are not telling me anything about your beliefs. The only thing you are telling me is that you know how to manipulate energy towards achieving a specific goal. You know how to do stuff.

There is a notable exception that must be mentioned. If in your magickal work you draw upon the divine energies, Witchcraft and religion come close together. But in spite of that they never mix. They stay separate. Religion has to do with your beliefs, Witchcraft with a certain way you achieve a goal. That means that if your spell involves the invoking of a deity, you do your spell in their presence and perhaps you are helped by their energies. That is not a religious act. That is an act of magick assisted by the divine. By far the most magickal work performed inside and outside the circle doesn’t involve the divine. Most of the stuff a Witch does, falls under the category of natural magick. It involves plant, animal and mineral material, oils, candles and a strong will. Nothing else.

The confusion between Witchcraft and religion may arise from the fact that we often choose to do magickal work inside a circle. Most Pagans, when they cast their circle choose to invoke the Goddess and the God, thus the magickal work is done in their presence. But, despite what some may say, their presence is not a sine-qua-non. A perfectly good circle can be cast without invoking any divinity. The casting of a circle is an act of magick and not a religious act.

Witchcraft is not exclusively hereditary.

Some of my fellow Pagans hold the view that Witchcraft is hereditary. They believe this excludes newcomers to the ancient art, because they had the misfortune to be born in a family that has no known magickal tradition. I respectfully disagree with this view. It is certainly true that some families pass on through the generations a certain sensibility towards magick. They may even pass on hidden knowledge. But all this does not exclude others, unrelated to them, from acquiring the knowledge. Witchcraft is an art, and as in every art certain families produce artists in every generation. That doesn’t mean that the son of a lawyer can’t learn how to paint, and do it brilliantly!

Witchcraft is neutral.

Magick can’t be good or bad, nor can it be white of black. The energy we use in it is always neutral. We colour it by applying our intent to it, but that does not change its neutral character. In order to categorize magick as good or bad, we must apply a moral judgement to it, and no matter how you look at it, that process is always a subjective one. Different people apply different values to their actions. What you may consider a good thing may be the worst outcome for me.

One may be tempted to explain the “good and bad” aspects of magick by associating it with constructive and destructive outcomes of the magickal work. If you care to analyse this view deeper than the surface, you will immediately notice that it is false. A destructive spell can sometimes be a good thing. You may want to break down blockages, remove obstacles or alter an unhealthy situation. In this case you must use the energy to destroy the old situation, in order to allow something new to develop. So, when someone tells you that they are a good Witch, regard them with suspicion. The neutral nature of magick is one of the first things one must understand in order to understand the ancient art. If this is not clear to the person you speak to, there is a deficiency present in their training.

Let’s once again return to that colourful lady. She told us she is a Witch. Why? Is this the most important thing about her? Or perhaps she feels the need to advertise something that sets her apart from the masses… Of course one can wear his convictions with pride, but why advertise them? I put it to you that the most successful practitioners of the ancient art are those that we don’t know anything about. We can only see that they are well adjusted, successful and happy. If a person feels the need to say “I’m a Witch” to a complete stranger, it may be a sign of an uncertainty they have. If you want to reaffirm this fact to you, do it in private. If you are not convinced your magick works, go back to it and study it.

I could understand if such a person would tell me immediately after we met that they are Pagan. I also wear this badge with pride. This statement tells us that one follows Pagan principles, lives a life that is in harmony with Mother Nature and that they feel at home within the Pagan framework, regardless of their religious convictions. If you belong to the Pagan nation, be proud of it, but don’t advertise what you can do by saying you are a Witch. That suggests that you came to Paganism only to learn the craft and take advantage of the possibilities it offers. Paganism is more than just the practice of the craft. So, what would you do after she told you “I’m a Witch”? I know what I would do: change the subject.
