Making Dragon Magick

Making Dragon Magick

Half-close your eyes as you sit outside or near caves or rocks. If the light is bright, you may see the swirling iridescent silver, purple, gold, green and blue of the dragon outline shimmering ahead. Let the image enclose and energize you and breathe slowly and regularly, allowing the warm, shimmering colors to flow in and out of your own energy field, your aura. If you see nothing externally allow the image to build up in your mind and superimpose it in your imagination on the scene.

You may see an image of the dragon and her fabulous treasures within the cave or see her flying upwards towards the sun. There is no danger in this for she is a spiritual force, experienced through the layers of countless millennia.

You may feel very warm as though close to a bonfire and see sparks or sunbeams dancing in the air all around.

When you are ready, close your eyes and gently push away with your hands palms outwards and upright. Allow the energies to move away, or you may sense them fading spontaneously as the dragon moves on.

Don’t ask for anything. The experience is enough and will help you to move with confidence and attract and spread the abundance you need.

Be sure to take a bottle of water to drink afterwards and splash on your hairline, brow, throat and wrists or palms to cool you down.

While you are still there, take time to write in your Book of Shadows. You may have heard words in your mind as you experienced the dragons power or they may come now and even if you are not normally poetic, the encounter will trigger off rich and vivid descriptions of flying with the dragon, the mysterious smoke-filled air within the cave and metallic colors of your dragon. If you open your eyes in the night before sleep the colors may reform.

Afterwards is a good time to explore the caves and rocks, if accessible. Even if you are crammed in a tourist party, you can sense your dragon and maybe the special place that you connected with in your visions and see the shimmering silver and purples reflected on the dark walls.

Ritual Tools

Ritual Tools

Every sincere magician is always searching for ways to amplify their magickal
power so that their manifestations will be more accurate and consistent. An
excellent method for increasing the flow of energy in your cast circle is to use
the elemental type power of Dragons. There are certain ritual tools that you
will find useful for practicing Dragon Magick and if you are already practicing
Magick then you will have some of them already. If you are just beginning to
work in magick then acquire your tools slowly and with care. It is important to
remember that your tools do not have to be elaborate or expensive to work nor do
they have to be expensive. If your budget does
not allow you to purchase anything at the moment don’t put off beginning your
practice of Dragon Magick.

Altar

Any table chest or microwave cart will do as long as it is comfortable to sit or
stand during ritual

Candles
If can’t use candles substitute an electric candle or small light

Incense Burner
Can use incense sticks or cones choosing scents to match ritual. If no incense
is available, use pleasant smelling aftershave or cologne

Dagger
Can be a paring knife, letter opener as long as tip is sharp and double edged.
Element of Fire.

Sword

Doesn’t have to be elaborate or expensive. Choose one that is not too long or
heavy. Element of Fire

Wand
Can be easily made out of a piece of dowel, no longer than length of forearm
plus your fingers. Glue or attach a crystal or small crystal ball to directing
end. In Dragon Magick wand is used to consecrate wine, water, and salt. Element
of Air

Staff
Can be piece of dowel or natural wood about shoulder-high. Attach crystal at top
end if you would like. If using smooth dowel you can purchase four lengths of
cording the length of staff. Cording should be in colors of the elements (red,
yellow, blue, and dark green or black ), tack or glue length of cording down
each side of staff to correspond with elemental directions, attach tassels of
the same colors at the top end of each piece of cording. You can further
decorate staff with small bells or whatever seems appropriate to you. The staff
serves as a connecting link between Magician and astral plane and becomes the
Dragon bridge, it is symbol of magickal authority, your right to call upon and
work with dragons. Also symbolic of center of circle or Element of Spirit.

Chalices
One for water and one for wine. One for water can be of any material, one for
wine advisable that it be lined with a good coating of silver if it is pewter,
brass, bronze, or copper .Wine and other acidic beverages create dangerous
reactions with certain metals. If you cannot drink wine then you can substitute
apple cider, grape juice, fruit juice, or even soda. Water chalice is Element of
Water. Wine chalice is Element of Earth, sometimes Fire when used for “blood”.

Salt Container
Small jar with lid is best because you will be keeping your ritual salt separate
from kitchen salt after consecration. Element of Earth.

Dragon Bowl
Whenever you are on a outing and feel within the area a power that draws you,
take an extremely small amount of dirt or sand back for your Dragon Bowl. This
Dragon Bowl and its contents will be used to empower objects in magickal ritual.
The Bowl and its contents naturally are Element of Earth

Gem Bowl
Clear glass bowl for stones and gems that you collect or buy. Expensive,
polished gems are not necessarily any better than those found in the rough in
Nature or the tumbled ones found in rock shops. This Gem Bowl does not need a
lid because stones radiate power at all times without any loss. Element of Earth

Water Bottles
If you plan to work with water or sea dragons, you need to purchase a number of
small bottles with lids that can be securely fastened. Again you will be
collecting small amounts of water from various sites where you feel the
radiation of dragon power, or strong elemental energies. Even rainwater as
power. Carefully label each bottle so you can remember where you got it. Element
of Water

Pentacle Disk
Necessary for consecrations and other ritual work, usually a metal or wooden
disk with a pentagram painted or etched on it. However, there is no reason that
the Pentacle cannot be made out of Cardboard. It is of the elements of both
Spirit and Earth and helps to control and balance all other of the Elements.
When used as an element of Earth, it grounds Spirit in the Ritual.

Dragon Pentacle
Used as either a picture or disk, presented during specific rituals as a means
of establishing your authority to call the Dragons and is of the Element of
Spirit

Mirror
Any shape, a plain wooden or plastic frame around a mirror makes it easier to
write on your magickal statement. Around all edges in DragonScript should be
written: “By the power of the eye of the Dragon, I capture and harmonize all
airborne thoughts. “Element of Earth and Spirit

Seeking and Working with Dragons

Seeking and Working with Dragons

It should be obvious by now that I have a deep respect and love for dragons, a belief in their powers as co-magicians that is backed by years of personal experience. And I hope I have piqued your interest enough to want to work with them.

So how does one go about finding dragons? And how do you use their power? Should you do co-magick with dragons, or should you avoid the partnership?

I assume since you have read this far, that you either already practice some form of magick or are seriously contemplating doing so. If you are experiencing any doubt about your worthiness (Goddess forbid!) to work in the area of magick, any area of magick, you have some serious work to do on your self-image and the programming you have undergone that created your poor self-image.

Every magician, indeed every person who even uses prayer, constantly walks the fine line between an overinflated ego and an appreciation of her/his self-worth. She/he understands, without any cover-ups, exactly why they are choosing to work magick at any given time. This understanding is vitally necessary in order to assess the end-result of the spellworking, the type of magick used, and the consequences that may be forthcoming for certain actions. What others think of a magician’s reasons is not important; they do not pay the penalties, gain the advantages of the rituals, or know exactly what that magician may think and feel. However, the magician must know what is deep within her/his own mind and heart, know it and deal with it if there is negative programming or intentions that are selfish and unjustified.

A good magican is neither white nor black. A good effective magician is what I call gray, one who understands completely the consequences of actions and is willing to do what is necessary, particularly in the areas of protection and the removal of evil. An effective magician knows her/himself like no one else does; she/he has to be brutally honest about real intents and purposes for using any type of magick in the first place, but especially so when practicing dragon magick.

In dragon magick, the magician cannot afford any lingering doubts as to her/his right to ask help from these powerful entities. Like many other beings, physical and nonphysical, dragons will take advantage of anyone who vacillates in her/his commitment or who is unclear about their intent of a ritual.

I have yet to meet an “evil” dragon, although I have encountered a few who distrust humans so much that one must take special care when working with them. Dragons become “evil” only when there is an imbalance of energies, a disruption of the powers flowing from the Earth and humans to dragons and back again. To re-establish a positive flow of this power, the magician does not join every fanatical group out picketing and rioting. She/he knows that all changes begin within the self. Like ripples in a pond, when the self becomes balanced the immediate atmosphere and community are affected. When the community becomes balanced, this spread further, taking in countries and eventually the entire world. But, as with all things, a majority of individuals must desire and seek the balance and improvement or it will not occur.

Does this mean that unless you are perfect in all levels of your being that you cannot attract, contact and learn from dragons? Of course not? But if you desire a continued companionship with them, you must strive to better yourself, balance the ebbs and tides of energies within you, and make this effort, an on-going project. Every magician and spiritual seeker should be aware that there is no such thing as complete perfection within the human body and mind 100 per cent of the time. If you could become that perfect, you would no longer inhabit a physical body. The laws of the universe do not allow anything to remain static, non-moving or non-growing. Perfect is static in whatever form it currently has; therefore, in order to confirm to the laws of the universe, that perfect form must evolve into something else, some form of being that can continue to evolve to the next higher stage of life. Change is one of the few constants of universal law.

My Meeting with the Goddess

My Meeting with the Goddess

Author: Raphael Eventide

I’m sitting here at this computer and I suddenly feel inspired by the Goddess to compose something: To tell you the way I first met her. I don’t know why, but here goes…

I was scared. Afraid. I’d just found out that there was going to be some major changes in my life. Normally, I didn’t handle change well. To be honest, it terrified me. I stood in front of the bathroom mirror. Trying to come to grips with what I knew was inevitable. I wanted to scream. I wanted to cry, “I don’t want to change!” But it wouldn’t have done any good. As I stood there, feeling the inner war consume my mind, suddenly, I heard a gently voice say, ‘Meditate.’ I had just recently become a dedicant a few days ago, and I was learning about the Goddess and wondering about her. The voice in my head sounded feminine, so I wondered… Could the Goddess be speaking to me? Well, even if it wasn’t the Goddess, it was some good sound advice, which was what I needed. So I went and sat down and closed my eyes and began to meditate.

I was in a forest. It was close to the evening hours, with the lazy sunlight gently touching the leaves and branches above my head. I was on a path through the woods and followed it. Then I saw her. She was the most beautiful mother I’d ever seen. She stood there before me cloaked in periwinkle robes, with long red hair, and skin as white as milk. Her eyes where a soft purple, and as soon as she saw me, she cried out with joy, “Oh my son! Welcome home!”

She ran to me, and I realized I was crying. As she embraced me, I realized how small I really was, and leapt into her arms and cried as if I had lost her. But now I was home, safe, in her arms. The love I felt all around me was overwhelming. But yet soft and gentle. I started blurting out how scared I was and how I wanted it all to go away! She held me in her arms and gently soothed me and waited until I was finished.

“My dear son, you are so spiritual and intelligent, but when it comes to change you rarely move. It’s not a bad thing, but you must remember, how can a flower grow if it does not move? How can you hope to go to college if you are afraid to even apply? You cannot wait for everything to come to you. Sometimes you must go to it.” She said it gently, and brushed my tears off my cheeks.

I sat on her lap now, looking up at her in awe. It was very wise. I always knew she was, but looking up into her face, I was sure she must be wiser then anyone knew. “Mother you are so wise!” I exclaimed. “You must know everything! And I know so little…”

She smiled warmly, and laughed. “My son, you are wise too. To know that you know little is the first step to true wisdom.” I smiled a little, and felt much better. Then my mother told me about how I came to be, and even now, it still causes my heart to flutter. As she spoke it, I saw it all happen before my eyes.

“When you were just a thought, you were like a seed that was carried on the wind. On it, you soared high in the sky with your father, God. He showed you the whole world. And carried you until you were ready and then into your mother’s womb. There, you grew. And your father and I worked hard. He was the great planner, deciding what you would look like, what you might do, what gifts we would give you.

“While he made the plans, I crafted you from the clay of the earth. I worked and worked and worked! I wanted to make you special and unique. Finally we were done. And you were born to your mother on the earth. You see my son, you are the physical manifestation of the love the God and I share. You are the product of our love sent out to the entire world. You are my precious jewel. My diamond. You catch the light of our Universal Divine Love and radiate it and shine it out to the whole world to see.

“We love you so much! And every day you take the step to hear us, and become the best you can be, you shine! You have many things to learn my son, but you can do all things. For you are from my flesh and your father’s breath. You are the place between, the magickal place where things are born that can change the world.”

She gently touched my heart and as she spoke these last words, I felt I was shining.

“Momma, when will I meet God?” I asked solemnly.

She smiled and spoke quietly, “Very soon my son, but for now, you are with me.” I don’t know how much longer we sat there, but eventually, she stood up, set me down and told me what I should do. I came back, and since then have begun to try and change for the best. I know it will be hard, but knowing that my mother and father are behind me and helping me always… where can I go wrong?

I am still on the path of becoming a witch/wiccan, as I started my Dedicant training in December of 2009. I’m so excited and have learned so much and still have so much to learn in my year and a day. I have also met my father God and he is just as beautiful and loving as the Goddess. I’m still not sure why she insisted I write this, but I have a feeling you know.

Even today my mother, the Goddess’ words come to me, and I try every day to make her and my father God proud. I hope my little story brought a smile to your face and maybe an answer to your searching heart. I pray that the God and Goddess speak to you through these words. My they lead and guide you to your own everlasting shine.

Until we meet again my friend, the circle is broken but unbroken. May the Truth, Love and Wisdom from the God and Goddess stay in our hearts always.

Blessed be.

Your Love Horoscopes for the Week of November 7th

Moods shift with the changing breeze and hearts grow restless this weekend. The Moon in jumpy Gemini invites curiosity and loves to flirt, but settling into a deep place and staying there will not be easy. Still, conversations flow with an overload of information and a willingness to talk to almost anyone.

Aries Horoscope
Aries Horoscope (Mar 21 – Apr 19)

The Moon’s presence in verbal Gemini and your chatty 3rd house encourages you to say whatever comes to mind without thinking first. Luckily, your flirtatious charm can open the way to meeting interesting people this weekend. Yet following up on commitments may be a challenge in this easily distracted sign. Playful companions and a variety of activities are more likely to fulfill your needs than locking yourself into a major project or having to deal with complex feelings.

Taurus Horoscope
Taurus Horoscope (Apr 20 – May 20)

Your sense of self-worth can fluctuate wildly this weekend, which can run you through a gamut of emotions. However, this isn’t the time to settle matters, but is one when it’s best to adapt, adjust and not take yourself or anyone else too seriously. The Moon in the butterfly sign of Gemini is wonderful for keeping things light. Exploring different kinds of people and experiences where no commitment is required should work best.

Gemini Horoscope
Gemini Horoscope (May 21 – Jun 20)

The Moon is hanging out in your flexible sign this weekend, sending your body, mind and heart off in a million different directions this weekend. But even if you’re scattered in your thinking, you should be able to attract attention quite easily. Just keep stress to a minimum by adopting a playful attitude instead of taking things too seriously. Teasing and flirting might not reveal deep feelings, but they can be a delightful source of low risk recreation.

Cancer Horoscope
Cancer Horoscope (June 21 – Jul 22)

You could feel like you’re an observer rather than a participant in the social realms this weekend. The emotionally detached Gemini Moon is occupying your 12th House of Privacy, which is not ideal for grabbing anyone’s attention or hanging out in crowds. However, it’s an excellent time for resting and relaxing without the pressure of entertaining others. Spending time alone or with one relatively quiet and undemanding person could be just what the doctor ordered.

Leo Horoscope
Leo Horoscope (Jul 23 – Aug 22)

Friends and colleagues stimulate your social life this weekend or make you crazy with their inconsistency. Sudden changes of plans and unexpected shifts of mood make it hard for you to know where you stand. But if you’re able to let go of expectations and roll with the tides, you can have plenty of fun. Meeting someone when you’re part of a group could turn out to be a pleasant surprise.

Virgo Horoscope
Virgo Horoscope (Aug 23 – Sep 22)

Be careful about taking on too many responsibilities because you could end up with so many obligations that you don’t have any time left for fun. That would be a shame with the Moon in flirtatious Gemini this weekend, which makes it easier to meet someone new or refresh an ongoing partnership. It’s best, though, to take things lightly because moods shift quickly and commitments can fail due to lack of focus and follow-through. Give yourself permission to let your hair down and have a good time without worrying about tomorrow.

Libra Horoscope
Libra Horoscope (Sep 23 – Oct 22)

You need to stretch your mind and your legs this weekend by getting away from your usual routine. Exploring new places and ideas is nourishing with the Moon in curious Gemini and your 9th House of Travel and Higher Education. Smart people are especially attractive now and your ability to keep up your end of an interesting conversation makes you more desirable, too. Just keep things on the light side instead of tackling anything too heavy.

Scorpio Horoscope
Scorpio Horoscope (Oct 23 – Nov 21)

You may find it hard to get a fix on others this weekend, even if it’s your partner who you know so well. The jittery Gemini Moon shakes up your 8th House of Intimacy with fluctuating feelings and inconsistent individuals. The point is not to make you crazy but to remind you to relax and take a lighter approach to your interactions. This is a fine time to flirt or have an innocent fling but it’s not ideal for addressing more complicated emotional issues.

Sagittarius Horoscope
Sagittarius Horoscope (Nov 22 – Dec 21)

Your personal life is on the move this weekend with the Moon traveling through mobile Gemini and your 7th House of Partners. Don’t expect reliability from even the most stable people since the winds of change will affect everyone. Opening up new topics of discussion in a current relationship or when meeting someone new is bound to be stimulating. Getting agreement on anything important, though, can be difficult, so it’s best not to push on the delicate points.

Capricorn Horoscope
Capricorn Horoscope (Dec 22 – Jan 19)

Don’t let the little things get you down this weekend. The Moon is in flighty Gemini and your 6th House of Details, which can have you scurrying around to put everything in place. It’s better to let go of minor matters, relax and let the less responsible side of your personality take charge. Plans change quickly and moods are inconsistent in spite of your desire for order. Compromising is less stressful than driving yourself crazy trying to control everything.

Aquarius Horoscope
Aquarius Horoscope (Jan 20 – Feb 18)

You could be in for a great time this weekend with the Moon’s presence in flirtatious Gemini and your 5th House of Romance. This is a perfect time for being playful, but not as useful for dealing with serious personal issues. Let your inner child out to play and you’re almost guaranteed to have a good time. Having fun can be surprisingly sexy as a joyful attitude makes you more desirable to others.

Pisces Horoscope
Pisces Horoscope (Feb 19 – Mar 20)

Are you ready for fun at your place this weekend? The friendly Gemini Moon is visiting your domestic 4th house, which is great for entertaining at home. Just don’t make it a formal affair since the sign of the Twins makes us happier in casual environments. Talking through your feelings in private can alleviate some pressure, but don’t expect an immediate solution to any long-term relationship issues now. Laughter is the best medicine for a weary heart.

Space Clearing: A Fresh Look at a Classic Tradition

Space Clearing: A Fresh Look at a Classic Tradition

Author: Tess Whitehurst

Clearing physical clutter out of your space is like taking a wrecking ball to everything in your life that isn’t working, and to any obstacles that may have been holding you back from living your greatness and manifesting your dreams. Space clearing, on the other hand, could be compared to airing out a stuffy room, steam cleaning a carpet, or tuning a piano. It removes lingering negative and/or stuck energy from your space while lifting and fine-tuning vibrations in order to summon positive energies and conditions into your life.

For most of the time that humans have been alive on this planet, we’ve lived outdoors, or in temporary or natural shelters. Nowadays, our indoor areas are raised above the earth, which naturally absorbs negativity; from water, which washes away negativity; from a free flow of air, which blows negativity away; and from full sunlight, which purifies and disinfects negativity. Negativity accrues not only from our negative thoughts, words, and feelings, but also from the stagnation that’s a natural byproduct of modern indoor spaces. This is why all spaces can benefit from regular space clearings.

To keep your vibes clean and clear, to feel happy and harmonious in your home, and to feel completely safe and protected, I suggest doing this simple visualization every day:

Sit with your spine straight, take some deep breaths, and relax. Call upon Divine White Light to powerfully enter your home as a huge vacuum tube of white light. See it moving around the entire interior of your home, simultaneously burning and suctioning away all dark, heavy, stagnant, or negative energy. See it penetrating all the darkest corners rapidly and effectively.

Once this feels complete, ask the Light to fill your home completely. See it extend outside, under, and above your home so that your home is completely encompassed in and surrounded by a huge sphere of Divine White Light. Ask the light to raise the vibrations of every item and area in your home to a very high and clear degree.

After that, ask for a circle of angels to surround your home, preserving this sphere of light and directing the positive energies of love, serenity, and happiness inward. Then, ask for another circle of angels to surround the first circle of angels, and ask them to face outward, directing all negative energy outward and keeping you and the other inhabitants totally safe and protected. Thank the Light and the angels, and open your eyes.

(Please note: instead of just calling on the White Light, you can call on a divine being such as The Goddess, Merlin, or Archangel Michael to cleanse and encompass your space with the White Light if you prefer.)

For us magical folk, space clearing is important because we have to create the space for magic and miracles to occur in our lives. Before we go around doing money spells and such, we must make sure we have a clean, clear, magical space to do it in. We have to release the energies and conditions we don’t want in order to make the space for the energies and conditions we do want. Not to mention, clearing clutter and space clearing alone, when done with intention, can often be the most powerful magical acts we could possibly perform when it comes to creating joyful and harmonious conditions in all areas of our lives.

And, one of the cool things about starting a regular space clearing practice is that it’s a very effective way to begin to exercise and strengthen your psychic and intuitive abilities. Most people, whether they think they’re psychic or not, can pick up on “vibes.”

You know, we say things like, “the place had really good vibes, ” or “I got a weird vibe from him, ” etc. Space clearing is a way of clearing out bad vibes and creating good ones, so when we notice this happening, we’re actually using our sixth sense: and every time we use it, it gets stronger.

While the visualization above is great to do every day as a maintenance measure, it’s also good to do the methods I’m about to describe on a regular basis to really keep the energy healthy and vibrant in your home. You might do one or several of them every couple weeks or so, as you see fit. They can be done alone for a quick clearing, or in combination with each other.

I’ll begin by discussing each one individually, and then give you some ideas for how to put a few of them together if you want to do a more thorough clearing.

Please note: cover food and beverages before you begin to clear so that the negativity does not enter them. (Water and salt are particularly absorbent.) Remember to do so for pet food as well.

Oh! And make sure to drink water before and after.

Clapping

Clapping is a quick and easy way to break up and dissipate stuck or stagnant energy with sound. Simply move around the perimeter of each room and area in the space, clapping loudly. Pay special attention to corners, areas behind doors, or anywhere else where you might imagine that energy would stagnate. (Think of energy as flowing like a brook or a stream though the space. Areas where energy might get stuck would be the areas that would accumulate leaves or trash on the surface of the stream. Areas that are usually dark are also spots with slow-moving or stagnant energy.)

If you clap a few times in an especially stagnant area, you can usually hear the claps getting clearer as the energy dissipates.

White Sage

Burning white sage powerfully removes negativity and lifts vibrations to a very high and clear level. To do this in your space, open the windows and light a bundle of dried white sage so that it’s burning like incense.

As you do this, say, “Spirit of Air, I call on you.” Move around the perimeter of each room/area, letting the smoke move around the space. (Carry a dish under the bundle to catch ash and embers.)

When you’re finished with the room, move the smoke around your personal energy field to cleanse away any negativity that you might have absorbed. Then, thank the Spirit of Air and extinguish the bundle by sealing it in a jar.

Fire

Have you ever felt a bad vibe in a room with an actual wood fire burning in it? Probably not. This is because fire powerfully burns away negativity like old, dead wood. If you don’t have a fireplace in every room (which I don’t assume you do) , you can place a large red candle on a plate (ideally soy or vegetable wax) , and surround it with a ring of sea salt.

Place the candle near the center of the room or area and light it as you say, “Spirit of Fire, I call on you.” Close your eyes and visualize the fire from the candle filling the room, burning away all negativity. When the visualization feels complete, carry the plate with the salt and lit candle to the next room or area and repeat.

When you’re finished, extinguish the flames as you say something like, “Fire, you were a great help to me, and I thank you.”

Sea Saltwater

Salt water powerfully neutralizes negativity. Fill a clear glass with spring or well water and dissolve one teaspoon of sea salt in it. Hold the water in both hands and visualize very bright white light coming down from above, entering the crown of your head, moving down to your heart, out your hands, and into the water.

Visualize the ocean as you say, “Spirit of Water, I call on you.” Pour the water into a mister (it’s okay if it doesn’t all fit) . Now, move around the perimeter of each room or area, spraying the mist lightly throughout. If you like, you might imagine a powerful ocean wave moving through your house as you do this.

When you’re finished, pour the remaining water down the drain and say something like, “Spirit of Water, you were a great help to me, and I thank you.”

Table Salt

A dish of non-iodized table salt, placed in a central location in a room, is a great negativity absorber. To cleanse your entire home with salt, get a dish for each room and area and fill each with a substantial (yet not necessarily large) amount of salt.

As you pour the salt, say, “Spirit of Earth, I call on you.” Then place one in each room or area. Each time you place a dish, hold your hands over it and empower it with the intention to draw all negativity from even the farthest corners of the room. Leave the dishes for 12-24 hours.

Then, thank the Spirit of Earth, flush the salt down the toilet, and wash the dishes thoroughly.

Quick Clearings

It’s good to perform some sort of clearing at least once a week or so, and any of the above methods can be done independently or paired up for a quick and informal clearing. But to perform my favorite quick-yet-effective space clearing, just clap and then burn sage. You might want to finish with a quick prayer or visualization to empower the space with harmonious energy: just ask for or envision all the conditions and feelings you’d like to experience in the space.

Thorough Ritual Clearing

Once a year or so, and during special circumstances like when your home changes residents or you move into a new space, it’s good (and fun!) to do a thorough ritual clearing. This is a great one.

Begin by creating an altar in a central or otherwise convenient location. This can be on a table, desktop, or countertop, or, if you already have an altar, you can use that area if you like. On the altar, place a mister of sea salt (created as above) , a dish for each room and/or area, non-iodized table salt, a plate or large candle holder with a large red candle on it, and a bundle of dried white sage. Also place an incense holder on the altar, and any kind of incense that you like.

Now, sit or stand in front of the altar and take some deep breaths, relaxing every muscle in your body. Feel the weight of your body on the earth and focus on this until you feel really grounded and solid. Close your eyes, hold your hands in prayer pose, and say a prayer.

Acknowledge/summon any helpers or deities you’d like, or just pray in order to clearly state your intentions to yourself and the Universe. Pray from your heart, and state in simple and clear terms what you’re about to do. You might say something like:

I now ask for the help of my guides and angels as I perform this space clearing. It’s my intention to clear all negativity from this space in order to experience sparkling vibrations and harmonious conditions, and to create the space for happiness, joy, love, abundance, success, and all the desires of my heart to flourish. Because I have asked for divine assistance in this endeavor, I know that I am perfectly receiving it now, and for this I give thanks.”

Light the candle and the incense to signify that the ritual has begun. Begin to clear the energy by clapping loudly in each room and area as described above.

Now, light the bundle of sage so that it’s smoking like incense. Face east and say, “Spirit of Air, I call on you!” Now, cleanse with the sage as described above.

As you do so, continually chant, “With the help of the power of Air, I cleanse this house.” Extinguish the sage, or if it’s only smoking a little, you can let it continue to burn as long as it’s in a jar or somewhere safe.

Next, light the candle and surround it with a circle of salt. Hold the lit candle and plate in your hands, face South, and say, “Spirit of Fire, I call on you!”

Cleanse with the candle as described above, and as you do so, chant, “With the help of the power of Fire, I cleanse this house.” When you’re finished, place the still-lit candle back on the altar.

Pick up the saltwater mister. Hold it in both hands as you face west, and say, “Spirit of Water, I call on you!” Mist each area as described above while chanting, “With the help of the power of Water, I cleanse this house.” Set the mister back on the altar.

Put some of the table salt in each dish as described above. Hold one dish in your hands, face north, and say, “Spirit of Earth, I call on you!” Place a dish of salt in each room and area while chanting, “With the help of the power of Earth, I cleanse this house.” Return to the altar.

Put your hands in prayer pose and empower the space with your intentions by chanting aloud all the conditions you’d like to experience. You might say: “Love, Harmony, Success, Abundance, Peace.” As you vocalize each word, envision the energy of the word resonating throughout the house, shifting the molecules to match its vibration.

When this feels complete, face north. Say, “Spirit of Earth, you were here, and I thank you!” Face west and say, “Spirit of Water, you were here, and I thank you!” Face south and say, “Spirit of Fire: you were here, and I thank you!”

Face east and say, “Spirit of Air: you were here, and I thank you!” Now thank any of the forms/facets of the Divine that you summoned during the opening prayer. Then, say “Thank you, thank you, thank you. Blessed be. And so it is.” Extinguish the candle and incense to symbolize that the ritual is complete.

Now, I am really serious about this: immediately after the ritual is complete, you must lie flat on your back on the ground. (If you have a private yard area where you can lay outside on the grass, this would be best, but if not, the floor to your house or apartment will work just fine.) This is because space clearing rituals raise and shift energy in such a major way that you have to get your equilibrium back ASAP. Even if you think you feel fine, please do this. It’s important for re-establishing rhythm and coordination in your mind, body, emotions, and immune system.

Once you’re lying on your back, envision/feel/imagine your personal energy field. It will naturally have a lot of excess energy in it. Imagine also that you’re lying on the earth, and allow the excess energy to grow heavy and fall downward where it’s absorbed by the earth like rain (even if you’re not on the ground floor, this will still work) . Your personal energy field will remain, just the excess will move downward into the ground.

Once this feels complete, get up and eat something nourishing and substantial like some sort of grain or a root vegetable. This will help to integrate you and restore your balance and connection to the physical plane.

How To Dispose of Ritual Tools

How To Dispose of Ritual Tools

By Patti Wigington

Sometimes, for whatever reason, you may decide that you have a ritual tool you no longer need. Perhaps you’ve got three athame too many, or someone has gifted you with a new chalice and you’re tired of the old one, or maybe something just doesn’t speak to you the way it used to. Whatever the reason, it can sometimes be a bit of a dilemma as to how to dispose of your ritual tools.

Difficulty: Easy
Time Required: Varied

Here’s How:

  1. Pass It On

If you’ve got a particular tool that still has a good feeling to it, or that has some sort of sentimental value, and you’ve decided it’s time to get rid of it, why not pass it along to a friend? You’ll be happy to know your item has gone to a good home, and your friend will be happy to receive a new magical tool. Before you pass it along, you may want to hold a short parting ritual to separate yourself from the object. Once your friend has the item in her possession, she can re-consecrate the tool to make it her own.

  2. Into the Wild

Some items seem to like being released into the wild, like animals. If you have a magical tool that came from nature — a wand made from a branch, a special stone, a bottle of sea water — then put it back into nature. While you may not be able to return it to the place you originally found it, you can always find a quiet place in the woods to leave it. Another option might be to toss it into a creek or river, as long as it is indeed a natural object.

  3. Release by Fire

Sometimes, you might have an item you don’t want any more, and you don’t want to give it to anyone else. You might not want to leave it out in the wild where someone can dig it up, either. In this case, the best thing to do is use fire to get rid of it. Burning a magical item doesn’t have to be complicated – build a fire and place the item in it. If you wish, say a few words to separate yourself magically from the object, and then allow it to burn.

  4. Burial

Another good method of getting rid of old ritual tools is burial. Typically, you’ll want to select a place that isn’t going to be disturbed later on — if you have property of your own, you can bury the item in your yard. If you don’t have your own land, or you’re going to be moving soon, you may want to find a remote spot somewhere that you can bury the object. Use good judgment before digging on any public property.

The Power of Affirmations

Reversing Ours Fears and Negativity

From Gail Bell,

Affirmations are words or phrases which are said over and over to AFFIRM a single thought about yourself or other people. This is the way you have formed negative and positive programming through out your lifetime, saying things to yourself, about yourself, over and over. After thoughts are repeated, they soon become a BELIEF, and then we think this belief is our reality. In this way we form fears of poverty, health, weight and relationships and the emotions connected with these beliefs can even become our comfort zone, no matter how negative they might be.

Since we created these beliefs we can also change them. This is where real freedom comes from. Focused affirmations are a great way to start your new tomorrows. When you feel tension, stress, or any type of anxiety, an affirmation which makes you feel good is where you need to go. My favorite is: I AM POWERFUL. It makes me feel so good! However, for the affirmations to work you must not only say something which makes you feel better you have to FEEL the words. So, say whatever makes you feel good, then see yourself in a happy scenario doing or being your desire. See it, feel it, even taste it! The more emotion you have the faster you will draw it to you. Here are some affirmations you might use, but the best ones are ones you make up yourself:

  • I AM POWERFUL
  • MONEY (LOVE, GOOD HEALTH, PERFECT WEIGHT, ETC.) COMES TO ME EASILY AND EFFORTLESSLY
  • I AM ALWAYS BALANCED AND CENTERED
  • I AM IN PERFECT HEALTH
  • I GIVE AND RECEIVE LOVE ALL THE TIME
  • I AM JOYFUL
  • I LOOK AND FEEL WONDERFUL If it takes saying them over and over a thousand things a day, then do it. If you say an affirmation when you are feeling really down, and you don’t think it’s doing anything for you, just keep on. Every time you say something positive you will bit by bit feel better. A little bit of feeling better is better than lots of feeling depressed.

Your Daily Horoscopes for Monday, Nov. 1

We are reminded of the differences between logic and imagination today as rational Mercury squares intuitive Neptune. This creative yet oftentimes confusing aspect comes on the heels of yesterday’s Venus-Neptune square, so our unrealistic desires are mixed with dreamy thoughts. However, the sensible Capricorn Moon helps us turn our fantasies into reality. The air begins to clear when the Moon shifts into intellectual Aquarius at 6:07 pm EDT.

Aries Horoscope
Aries Horoscope (Mar 21 – Apr 19)

You may not know what to do with the brilliant ideas that pop into your head today. Ironically, friends and coworkers become less convinced that your approach will work the more you try to explain it. They may agree with your position, but they’re not sure that you can transform your clever strategy into a practical plan. It won’t help to ramble on about what you will do. Save your long speeches for another time; for now, lead with actions rather than words.

Taurus Horoscope
Taurus Horoscope (Apr 20 – May 20)

You believe that you’re being very realistic, but you probably won’t have such a firm grip on reality today. At first you may persuade others that you’re in control, but you are more likely to confuse them as you contradict yourself later on. Although you’re able to explain a complicated concept now, it’s more challenging to just give simple directions. Be smart and let someone else temporarily hold the reins of control.

Gemini Horoscope
Gemini Horoscope (May 21 – Jun 20)

Your key planet Mercury is in its trickster mode today as it squares irrational Neptune. You may try to think clearly, but it’s challenging to finish sentences when your ideas float off into the mists of illusion and fantasy. Remember your analytical process is muddled now, so don’t be overly certain about what you know. Wait a couple of days before reconsidering your options.

Cancer Horoscope
Cancer Horoscope (June 21 – Jul 22)

You may be better off today by remaining as silent as possible. If you avoid saying too much, you can come out of a tangled emotional web appearing as if you are a real hero. Although it could be difficult to see both sides of a conflict now, you still realize that there’s no single straightforward solution. Pretending to have the answer will probably just create disappointment; your wisest strategy is to wait it out. If you have something crucial to add to the discussion, it will be even more relevant in a day or two.

Leo Horoscope
Leo Horoscope (Jul 23 – Aug 22)

It’s very reassuring when your personal goals are consistent with your actual duties at work. However, it can be quite disconcerting now if they’re not. Your current situation may be complicated by a friend or business partner who isn’t communicating clearly. If you’re trying to finalize a decision, it would be better to have the support of those around you. Be patient; others will begin to cooperate more in the days ahead.

Virgo Horoscope
Virgo Horoscope (Aug 23 – Sep 22)

This can be an unusual but exciting day when you’re more inclined to tell a story or write a poem than act in a fully rational manner. You want everyone to acknowledge how clever you are, but it isn’t easy to concentrate on details today. Don’t set yourself up for failure by trying to deliver something beyond your current capability. Give yourself permission to lose yourself in a daydream; you can always return to your work tomorrow.

Libra Horoscope
Libra Horoscope (Sep 23 – Oct 22)

Your sign of The Scales symbolizes your commitment to seeking balance, even when it’s elusive. You might end up spinning your wheels today if you think you can use logic to find the calm center of the storm. But you won’t re-establish your center of gravity by keeping still; instead of sitting in a yoga pose, imagine that you are a figure skater in motion. Your easy grace arises from being one with the flow rather than trying to cling to the status quo.

Scorpio Horoscope
Scorpio Horoscope (Oct 23 – Nov 21)

You aren’t in the mood to argue with anyone who seems to know all the answers since you don’t feel the need to prove anything. However, it won’t help if you just walk away from a discussion simply because you’re afraid that a disagreement will ensue. Remember that it always takes two to create conflict. Demonstrate your wisdom by remaining clear about your facts and beliefs without having to compete with others.

Sagittarius Horoscope
Sagittarius Horoscope (Nov 22 – Dec 21)

You can turn a rather mundane day into an exciting one as long as you don’t attempt to resolve the dualistic way you approach life today. On one hand, you’re thinking like an analytical scientist, carefully observing your current situation in a cool and detached manner. But on the other hand, you’re like an artist, directly engaging your experiences by responding with a wide spectrum of emotions. Each method has something of value to offer, so tune in to your head and your heart at the same time without closing down either one.

Capricorn Horoscope
Capricorn Horoscope (Dec 22 – Jan 19)

You want to believe that your instincts won’t steer you wrong because the Moon is back in your pragmatic sign. However, you may have temporarily lost your ability to separate threads that are spun in your imagination from those that are woven with reality. Normally you are a champ at keeping fact and fiction distinct, yet now the fabric of life contains both. Don’t overanalyze what’s happening; just appreciate the magic of what you can create.

Aquarius Horoscope
Aquarius Horoscope (Jan 20 – Feb 18)

You are motivated to communicate the recent vague visions you’ve been having, but the more you try to describe them, the less others understand. Your thoughts are elusive and cannot easily fit into words, unless you have a particular spiritual discipline that helps you to frame your experience. Awakening your inner artist, poet or mystic, however, can help you explain the subtleties of your current perspective.

Pisces Horoscope
Pisces Horoscope (Feb 19 – Mar 20)

Logical Mercury is forming a creative square with your ruling planet Neptune, opening your imagination to realities that exist beyond the realm of language. This can be very confusing if you want to be specific in your communication today. Unfortunately, even the most basic ideas are slippery now. Instead of increasing your frustration by trying to manage too many details, put this kind of work off until tomorrow when your concentration returns.

To Brew a Cauldron of Roots and Bones

To Brew a Cauldron of Roots and Bones

by Catherine Harper

When the year turns, the earth is less gentle, and the outdoors is no longer safe. The soft green woods of summer are now stripped bare and home to winds and rain. For light and warmth, we must retreat inside, even in the gentle clime of Puget Sound, where we are sheltered by the mountains and the extremities of season are kept at bay by the vast thermal mass of the ocean.

All at once, it seems, it is autumn, and past the drawn-out golden harvest and into the dark days and rain. There may be a few peppers and tomatoes left to us, but the season has turned from fruit to fallow. For the gardener, there are a few hardy greens, the squash lying amidst their shriveling vines and the late apples. For the forager, there are a few roots and the cool-weather fruiting of mushrooms. But the focus has changed from the fields and orchards to the kitchens, pantries and root cellars, from what is fresh to what can be saved for later use.

After the extravagance of the autumn harvest, it is a good time to contemplate the dark season. All that is left of the corn are the stalks in the field; in the orchard, the branches are bare. The supermarkets bring us strange and often illusory delights from far distant lands (yes, one can have hothouse strawberries in winter, or bland and mealy fruits picked too early and ripened far from their trees, but do the limp imitations you may purchase feed your body any better than they do your soul?). But you still may take a step back and look at the land around you, and recall both to the mind and table the humble foods that are still with us.

Consider, then, the onion.

The origins of onions are hidden back in the misty recesses of antiquity. There are wild onions known and enjoyed throughout the world, and by the time the pyramids were built the onion was widely cultivated. Herodotus records indeed that the builders of the pyramids sustained their strength on a diet of “radishes, onions and leeks,” and onions and bread were the staple diet of workers throughout the greater region. The Egyptians honored their onions, and were well-known in the ancient world for the quality of their leeks. But by the Roman period, while the leeks were considered a fit item for the tables of emperors, the onions, though grown in vast quantities, were confirmed in their place on the poor man’s table.

In the garden, it is easy to see why the onion has been so embraced by those lacking in both time and money. It is a hardy plant, resistant to disease and pests, and needing little in the way of cultivation. A bit of rich soil, perhaps a quick weeding once or twice during the year, and the tiny shoots you planted that looked like nothing more than frail blades of grass send up a tower of sturdy, pungent greenery, and then below ground swell into plump bulbs.

In our own kitchens, onions are ever present, and yet little regarded. They are so often used as a flavoring agent that I suspect few people realize how much they contribute to the bulk of a dish, and so ubiquitous that it’s easy to forget how much flavor they add, while their cousins garlic and shallot get most of the press. Few vegetables have ever carried so much weight with so little notice. In the store, there are always onions, vast piles of onions, cheap and long-lasting. Red onions and white, yellow onions in their darker skins, pearl onions and boiling onions, green onions, dried onions and french-fried onions.

I think too little thought often goes into the selection of onions. Red onions and white onions are sold, usually at a jacked-up price, peeled and trimmed, a form in which they must be kept refrigerated. This allows you to get a good look at the onions and is undoubtedly more convenient, if one is willing to pay twice the price and use the onion swiftly. The yellow onions, our local most common staple, are sold only untrimmed and often poorly sorted. And yet a good yellow onion will sit like a bronze pearl, filling its skin smoothly with no trace of bruising or of the black powdery mold that likely infests many of its neighbors. I have been laughed at by produce clerks for my careful selection of onions, but I have never regretted looking closely. (Onions in bags, while cheap and convenient, I have often regretted, in part because the bag often prevents close inspection, and onions only last a long time if they are intact.)

When I was first on my own, at 15 finding myself abruptly responsible for my own sustenance, I kept my ears always open as I made my way through the produce aisle. One day, I overheard a woman talking of the labor of feeding a family after a long day at work herself. “When I get home, sometimes I don’t know what I’m going to make, and no one else wants to wait at all. But my mother told me a trick — chop up and fry an onion in a pan, and you’ll buy yourself some time. When they smell that onion coming out of the kitchen, they’ll sit back and wait, because they know it’s going to be good.”

Or consider the venerable soup bone.

It is a curious reversal that the thrifty old art of boiling meaty bones for soup, and the great equalizer of the soup pot where the taste of the ingredients is shared by all even if the best pieces might not be, has become something of a mark of culinary distinction. True cooks now build their stock with love, patience, time and often fairly expensive ingredients. Indeed, it is common now for a stock to be made for soup, after which the meat the stock was drawn from is thrown away and replaced by fresh pieces for the finished product.

I can’t quite see that. From a technique point, yes, this is a fine way to build a soup, but to rob meat of its flavor and yet little of its nutrients and then to throw the meat away… perhaps there is a time and a place for such extravagance, but not in my kitchen, as late autumn mutters of the coming of winter. There are generations enough of hungry dead.

Soup bones are almost an anachronism to most home cooks. They come from a time when people were more comfortable with the animal origins of their meat, when larger roasts were more common and yet also more dear, and when people took care to extract all the nutrients they could from their food. Today, one is more likely to see beef “stew meat” for sale, though this ignores that the purpose of a soup bone isn’t only meat, but tendon, cartilage, connective tissue and even marrow. (A dear friend of mine, retired lawyer and accomplished Jewish mother, informs me that the curative powers of matzoh ball soup reside in the gelatin leached out of the chicken. I hesitate at such a reductionist explanation, but the theory is the same. A good rich homemade broth will thicken and even solidify when cold.)

Onion Lemon Soup with Mushrooms

This soup has Greek avgolemono in its ancestry, but it has become vegetarian and shifted its focus to include the onions and mushrooms that form the base of the stock. The onions must be thoroughly caramelized.

The dried mushrooms in this recipe can be six or so good-sized shiitake mushrooms, reconstituted in warm water and then sliced, or a slightly smaller quantity of dried porcini, matsutake or other strong-tasting wild mushroom — chantrelles, delicately flavored as they are, would be lost. One could also substitute a cup or fresh shiitake or porcini for both the dried and fresh mushrooms, or use some combination thereof. I’m afraid this really only qualifies as poverty food if you hunt your own mushrooms, considering the prices wild mushrooms command, though during my impoverished years I sometimes found dried mushrooms in the marked-down bin.

  • 1 or 2 large onions (yellow or white) chopped
  • Olive oil
  • 3 to 6 cloves garlic, crushed and chopped
  • 1 cup button mushrooms, sliced
  • Dried mushrooms
  • 2 cups cooked rice
  • 1 bay leaf
  • Salt, pepper
  • Juice of two lemons
  • 2 egg yolks
  • 2 quarts water, plus an additional &fraq14; cup

In a thick-bottomed pot, caramelize the onions in olive oil over medium heat until they are thoroughly brown. (If they begin to stick to the bottom of the pan too badly, you may deglaze the pan by pouring in a few tablespoons of water and stirring vigorously, until the water boils off and you resume caramelizing.) Add the garlic and mushrooms and continue to cook, stirring gently, until the mushrooms are tender.

Add two quarts of water, the rice and the bay leaf, bring soup to a simmer, and let it simmer for 20 minutes or so. Add salt and pepper, taste the broth and correct the seasoning if needed. (Add more salt, more mushrooms or perhaps a teaspoon or so of molasses.)

Remove pot from heat while you juice the lemons and separate the eggs.

Add lemon juice. Beat the egg yolks. Beat in about a quarter cup of lukewarm water. Then beat in a half-cup of broth from your soup. (The idea here is for the egg yolks to blend smoothly with the broth and not to cook too quickly.) Finally, whisk the egg and broth mixture into your soup, and return the soup to the burner, over medium low heat. Return to the barest simmer, gently, then remove from heat and serve

Beef Bone Barley

This soup is based on a savory, layered broth that still uses all of its edible parts. The bones and raw and roasted meat add richness and complexity to the broth.

  • 1 soup bone
  • 1 small package beef stew meat
  • 1 cup barley
  • 1 onion, chopped
  • 3 or 4 cloves garlic, crushed
  • 2 or 3 carrots (optional)
  • 2 or 3 stalks celery (optional)
  • 1 bay leaf
  • 5 to 10 peppercorns
  • 1 glug of red wine, if available
  • Salt

For the soup bone, if you do not have easy access to a neighborhood butcher, nose around in your grocery’s meat department. Often bones for soup are hidden in the frozen section. I’d recommend a nice joint, if possible, and don’t worry too much about whether it has meat on it, as you’ll be adding meat later. Ox tails are never a bad thing, either, though they make for a very rich soup.

Cover your soup bone in cold water in a thick-bottomed pot, and then slowly heat the pot over a low burner. Seek a stable temperature just at the edge of simmering, cover and allow to stew overnight.

A few hours before dinnertime, remove the soup bone and discard. Add half your stew meat to the pot, and roast the other for some 20 minutes in a 350-degree oven. Add the roasted meat as well to the pot. Add the cup of barley, cover and continue simmering.

Forty minutes or so before dinner, add the onion, garlic, carrots, celery, bay leaf and peppercorns. Add your glug of wine, and quickly cover and return to simmering.

In the last few minutes before serving, add salt, remove the bay leaf and taste the broth. Add more salt, wine or fresh ground pepper if needed.

Honoring Yourself – Adjusting to the Dark Time of Year

Honoring Yourself – Adjusting to the Dark Time of Year
Did you know that you can maximize your energy levels by adjusting your food and exercise to match the season? Now Autumn is in full swing, and it’s chilly! It’s a lot more work for your body to stay warm, but you can ease the process by focusing your diet on warm dishes using seasonal foods to give yourself that extra nutritional boost and exercising regularly to heat your body up! Adding pungent and spicy herbs can warm you up too: garlic, oregano, thyme, onions, cayenne, chili, curry, rosemary, basil etc…
Colds, congestion and constipation are pretty typical this time of year. We’re too busy to rest and exercise as much as we need or we indulge on sweets during the holidays or all of the above! These conditions are simply signals from the body that you need to simplify and cleanse a bit. To balance out: rest, hydrate, exercise and eat plenty of seasonal produce, especially in soup our stew form. Even the seasonal fruit is cleansing for your system. Check your local farmer’s market, but it’s likely you’ll find these seasonal foods available: cranberries, apples, pears, pomegranite, oranges, pumpkins, squashs, turnips, parsnips, beets, brussel sprouts, peppers, and sweet potatoes, garlic, and onions.
One way to lower your chances of coming down with a cold or the flu this season is to practice deep relaxation on a daily basis. Often relaxing deeply will give you an energy boost because the energy your muscles were using to stay tense is now directed back into the body system and available for you to repair damage, neutralize a “bug”, or simply to recharge. The most simple at home technique for deep relaxation is to sit comfortably and breath slowly. Inhale for a count of four, pause briefly, and then exhale for a count of 8. Repeat for 5 or 10 minutes until you feel peaceful and calm. You can do this simple breathing exercise anytime and anyplace – while sitting in traffic, in a meeting, waiting in line, while on hold on the phone, when you first wake up, in bed to help you fall asleep, etc…

For many this time of year also means going to and leaving work happens in the dark. You might not be getting enough sunlight to regulate your body’s rhythms so that you feel your best. If you can, expose your hands and face to the sun outside daily in the morning for 5-15 minutes to let your body know it’s time to be alert, awake and energized. If you can’t get outside, consider investing in a natural spectrum lap and give yourself a light treat every morning during breakfast for 5-15 minutes. The resulting alertness and focus is quite amazing!

Whether your schedule is busting at the seams, you don’t want to leave the house, or the usual holiday stressors are looming on the horizon – the best thing you can do for yourself to float through the holidays with peace and bliss this fall is to make self-care a priority.
Schedule an appointment with yourself to relax and rejuvenate every day, or at the very least every week. And, keep this appointment with yourself like it’s a date with someone important to you. (I hope you are important to you.) Taking this time out on a regular basis is the key to being energized, staying calm, and feeling good about all the decisions you have to make during the busy time of year – about what you eat, what you buy, how you spend your time, etc…

I recommend you pull out your calendar right now and set aside your self-care appointments before the holiday invitations start coming in. The trick is to honor these appointments with yourself by saying no to invitations that conflict, or if you can’t or don’t want to say no to an important event, rescheduling your self-care appointment to another time that day or day that week. The key is making self-care a priority and sticking with your commitment to relax and rejuvenate.

A Taste of Autumn

A Taste of Autumn

Author: Lady Rain StarDragon (Teresa Garcia)

Over the past several days, I’ve watched the maple tree between the laundry room window and the Mountain. Slowly, the vibrant green has yellowed to gold, and today, the whole tree now blazes a brilliant vermilion. Other trees still wear their green, like our own maples, while yet others are changing into their yellow robes. Across the street and all through the neighborhood, those that have apple trees have the golden and scarlet fruits of the season.

The air bites when I step out into the chill, sending a delicious shiver down my spine. I am constantly in a state of in between, my dragon self balances well with my human self, and so I can sense when my plumes stand up a little, and the shiver passes clear to the tip of my tail. When walking in this, the blasts of wind the town site was chosen for combs through my head and I can’t always resist the urge to spread my wings and revel in the feel.

Now is the time for hot apple pies heavy with cinnamon, and soon the pumpkins will be ready for harvest. Thoughts of warm pumpkin bread and persimmon cookies dance through my head. Sometime soon, I know that I will give in to the desire for pie, and indulge in the ecstasy that comes with baking, and then eating the fruits of my labors with loved ones.

The sky is gray, the clouds high and not touching the Mountain; yet again I’m sure the Mountain will wear a little more white. The wind and rain that caresses the land at night brings forth a purr from me, and inwardly I coil. Now is not the time to den though. This is the season of the harvest and the hunt.

Where Tia is, I know that she feels similar urges to mine. If I close my eyes, even during the day I can hear the short pant of her breath as we run through the forests in our dreams. Though we are different species, there are things that we share…

However, it is the waking world of physical form that I am in now, not the metaphysical one where not all is as it seems at first glance. Even in this waking world, I can practice my art. I can be One with Nature, draw it deeply into myself.

I have noticed that lately I have started wearing clothes that echo the changing leaves, a subconscious nod to the stately trees that teach me so much. The trees begin to draw their essence further inside of themselves, and I do as well.

The chill encourages this, this time of introspection and preparation. Now is a good time to finish things, and then I can have a little rest. The earth murmurs softly as the wind passes by, a reminder that change is the only constant.

The ranges around are still mostly green; various evergreens make up most of our forests here, despite the deciduous trees that are beginning their turning.

It is said that at this time, the veil between worlds is thin, and I’m inclined to believe it. I’ve always noticed that at this time of year, dreams become easier to recall and more vivid. It could be inspired by the weather, which inspired deep contemplation, but there is more to it.

The pendulum swings and the wheel turns, this is the way of my world. The voices grow louder, and sometimes even those that aren’t particularly open have interesting experiences.

It is also said that, in folklore and traditionally, anything left in the fields after the 31, must be left for the fey folk. Not only is it easier to pass between worlds, but they need food as well… It’s said that they blight anything left in the fields, I have sometimes wondered whether it’s because of the freeze possibility messing with the food, or whether it’s from them taking the essence… or some combination. At any rate, much of modern society doesn’t seem to follow this.

Perhaps it is a good idea to let the late stuff stay though… the nutrients return to the ground to nourish the earth, and animals have food to eat… The deer will not be quite so hungry, and the predators will benefit from this, but so will those prey animals that are fed upon. With the scat and vegetation turned under, the soil will be richer, and we will have a little less impact. But these are random thoughts as I let myself mingle with the season.

The waters grow colder with the temperature changes, and soon enough the lakes will begin to freeze. Ice will form over the rivers, though some larger ones will stay unfrozen. Small streams will sleep. But for now, we are between, and Summer mixes with Winter to make this Autumn.

Some traditions depict this time as a War between the two Kings of Summer and Winter. I’ve often thought of it more as the union of Summer and Winter, the blending and uniting of the two… male and female each season, yet neither sex as well. Two forces or essences swirling and merging, pressing into each other until at last… one gives with a last sleepy sigh and gentle nuzzle.

Summer sleeps then in the arms of Winter, and he/she covers them both with a mantle of snow as he/she watches the Beloved sleep and incubate the new life, resting for the next shifting in the Spring.

This is the Deep Magic, working with these forces that eternally shift and merge, draw apart and dance together again. This is what holds me trapped as I dance with Life and Death, Growth and Rest.

When people ask me what I think about the weather, I never know how to answer them in the moment. It is the weather, and the season, and I am a part of it, responding ever to the promptings. I’d like to share the ecstasy that a good gust of wind gives me as it passes by, leaves swirling giddily in its wake.

This is all that I can do… leave you with a taste and a touch, and let you hear the sighs of Summer and Winter in their Autumn Meeting.

My Broom is Bigger than Your Broom

My Broom is Bigger than Your Broom

Author: Lady Abigail

Walking across the freshly harvested field of hay, I watched the sun as it sank, little by little, between the great oaks on the hillside. The trees seemed to be burning in the autumn colors of orange, gold and red. The air quickly became crisp and cool.

Smoke from my Great Grandmother’s chimney lay heavy in the air, like it was dancing in the vanishing twilight. The sweet aroma of the evening placed images within my mind. For me, it was as if the essence from times past were encircling me in a mist of stories not yet told.

I could hear the crunch of each of my footsteps as I walked across the field home. Suddenly, the sounds changed around me. I heard more footsteps, a wagon bouncing across the bridge, and cars turning down the dirt road, chased by the dusty shadows behind them.

I ran as quickly as my short legs would carry me to reach the house so I could hug those that were my family. My heart was pounding like a drum from some distant land. This night was special; this was the night of the ancestors, the night of the calling, calling the dead.

I had been watching all day, for I understood the magick that this night would bring. The energy found within the veils and the mystical visions that would be called to those that stood within the circle to be cast.

They were called the sisters, my aunts. Each one filled my life with stories and knowledge of the old ways. Each was a Witch and Crone in her own right. Each one was different and each was a force of nature, independent and strong. Not one was accountable to the other until they stood beneath the moon as a covenant of power.

My aunts, my family, were not as other families. We didn’t look the same, we didn’t speak the same, and we didn’t even think the same. But that was okay. Now I see what a wonderful and magickal gift that was; diverse energies, histories, and traditions that came together as one all-encompassing power.

My Great Grandmother was Cajun. Her Native American beauty gave her dark skin and silken raven hair marked with silver from time and wisdom. Myself, born of mixed blood, had been given extremely light-colored skin and white blond hair, what those in the old south called a “toe head.”

Even as a child, I learned the judgmental hearts of others. I saw how some treated my Great Grandmother, how some looked at us as odd when they saw us together. Sometimes people could be extremely rude and say hurtful things.

Many would turn their backs as we walked by. Some didn’t understand and didn’t realize that this dark-skinned woman was my Grandmother. But within all the dim-wittedness of those around us, what I remember most was my Great Grandmother’s pride and forgiving heart.

As twilight turned into night, the great feast was placed on the long table in my Grandmother’s house. The sisters respectfully placed the setting on the table for the ancestors. I was now old enough to help and got to light the candles all around the room.

There were countless candles. Most were the bees’ wax candles my Great Grandmother and the sisters had made during the spring and again just at the break of fall. I walked quietly from table to table, lighting each candle with a blessing. The honey-scent fragrance, mixed with the smells from the food and the holiday, gave way to an energy that made my skin tingle with excitement.

Once the feast was ended, it was time to ready for the calling. My Great Grandmother asked me to go to the back porch and bring her in her broom. I stood for a moment outside on that tiny wood porch held in place by the stones under each corner.

I looked at the glow coming through the windows and falling on the sparkling ground, now wet with dew. The sensation of my family gleamed in the warmth that shown from within that small house. I had no doubt that the spirits would be moved to join us that night. My spirit had found flight with the energy of love that surrounded me.

The sisters now walk within the veils with my Great Grandmother, and at this time of year, the time of the calling, I will welcome them all and ask that they join my table for the feast. Now I am the Crone; I seek within my Great Grandmother’s teaching to be a wise woman.

I endeavor to teach all those that walk our path in the old ways, with acceptance, truth, and light. My family has aged, changed, and grown. My circle is filled with those that I love, both brothers and sisters, aunts and uncles, in a blending of various traditions. I am truly blessed.

Not long ago, while attending different gatherings, I sadly watched and heard many that walk our path begin to rank themselves among each other. For lack of a better term, I would have to say it was a syndrome of “my broom is bigger than your broom, ” or my tradition is better than your tradition.

It frightens me that we have somehow decided we are better than another because of what name they choose to call themselves or what magickal path they walk.

Do we really need to judge each other?

Many of us proudly call ourselves Witches and Pagans. Some use the traditions of the path they have selected within their title. Some will call themselves by nothing at all, but simply know they have found themselves within their own hearts.

Along this diverse path, I have spoken to many within our communities, and they speak of finding their way home and reclaiming life within our varied and blending traditions, escaping the critical judgments of past beliefs.

The sisters, my aunts, were also very different. They came from all over the Ozarks. Some of them were old, some younger, some dark, some light, some with grey hair and some with red. They were scholars, teachers, mothers, and wise women. Each was as different as the night is to the day, yet each was respectful of the other beyond question.

They did not talk about what the other family members were doing or not doing. They did not discuss in what manner one worked within magick over the other. They respected each other with honor and shared their understandings together.

In truth, we are each individuals; our practices and beliefs are equally individual. We are all following our own spiritual and magickal path. Let us be a gathering of like-minded souls, yet, at the same time, strive to be open- minded and accepting of each other’s personal differences. We are all equal as we walk together, no matter which path we take in the walking.

It is not necessary to pull others down to strengthen ourselves. Strength is found as our circle grows in understanding of each other. As we enter this time of welcoming the ancients and the wise ones, let us stand as a cohesive brotherhood and sisterhood, brought together by the belief, that within understanding, all things are possible.

It is time that we all, each one of us, reflect on how far we have came, and how hard a path we all traveled. Remembering the sacrifices of those that walked this path before us, let us think before we judge or criticize another. Then shall we truly stand together in this magickal circle as it expands within the universe.

Together let us be as one family to celebrate our beliefs within life and magick.

Your Love Horoscopes for the Week of October 24

Relationships grow more complex during this first full week of the Sun in emotionally intense Scorpio. Desire increases and our willingness to compromise needs to gain approval diminishes. Wednesday’s pivotal square between ardent Mars and alluring Venus can’t help but dramatize romantic matters.

Aries Horoscope
Aries Horoscope (Mar 21 – Apr 19)

Your ruling planet Mars in dramatic Leo runs into a stressful square with romantic Venus in passionate Scorpio on Wednesday that raises the stakes in your personal life. Honestly facing some deeper issues in relationships is hard work this week. You or your partner may want more or, if you’re single, your desire for intimacy could lead to some risky behavior. Nevertheless, exposing your hidden feelings can liberate you with the truth; just try not to go to extreme measures to prove your point.

Taurus Horoscope
Taurus Horoscope (Apr 20 – May 20)

There’s nothing casual about your relationships this week with Wednesday’s passionate Scorpio New Moon landing in your 7th House of Partners. It’s time to push the envelope by seeking deeper satisfaction instead of settling for a safe but unfulfilling status quo. The price, however, is a willingness to let go of some of your stubborn patterns in exchange for achieving a greater degree of intimacy.

Gemini Horoscope
Gemini Horoscope (May 21 – Jun 20)

Feeling underappreciated or over-criticized can put you in a feisty mood this week. Your key planet Mercury’s stressful square with combative Mars can trigger harsh words on Friday. However, the message is about improving yourself rather than complaining to others or resisting reasonable advice. Cleaning up your act is a great way to feel better about yourself and, at the same time, makes you more attractive to others.

Cancer Horoscope
Cancer Horoscope (June 21 – Jul 22)

The passionate Scorpio New Moon falls in your 5th House of Romance on Wednesday, which should enliven your personal life one way or another. However, the path to love and pleasure could be a rocky one with conflicting ideas and values to negotiate with your current partner or a potential new one. Don’t hesitate if your heart tells you to reach out and express your desires. But if your emotions urge you to withdraw, don’t act too hastily. Retreating to your shell now is not the best option when it comes to finding love.

Leo Horoscope
Leo Horoscope (Jul 23 – Aug 22)

Irrepressible Mars in your willful sign encourages you to keep pushing for who and what you want. But loving Venus’ stressful square to the warrior planet is a mid-week reminder to be more sensitive in your seductions. Tuning in to what someone wants and subtly altering your actions to fulfill those desires will make you even more enchanting to those around you. As long as you remain true to your principles, putting others first works like a charm now.

Virgo Horoscope
Virgo Horoscope (Aug 23 – Sep 22)

It’s finally time to have some deep conversations about matters of significant personal concern. If you are tempted to aggressively defend your position, you could win the battle but lose in the game of love. Don’t look for quick solutions to restore faith in an ongoing alliance or to get a new one heading in a favorable direction. Honesty and vulnerability are your allies in spite of the complications they arouse. Take the first step by opening your heart and you might be pleasantly surprised at what happens next.

Libra Horoscope
Libra Horoscope (Sep 23 – Oct 22)

Hinting at what you want is unlikely to succeed this week. Your romantic ruling planet Venus in subtle Scorpio would prefer to give indirect signals rather than to be straightforward in expressing your needs. But Wednesday’s stressful square between cosmic lovers Mars and Venus indicates that staying quiet can leave you very dissatisfied. It’s better to be just a little pushy and deal with others’ discomfort in the moment than to remain silent and unhappy any longer.

Scorpio Horoscope
Scorpio Horoscope (Oct 23 – Nov 21)

This is a very powerful time for pushing your romantic agenda forward. The passionate Scorpio New Moon and a sexy square between Venus and Mars kick up strong feelings this week. The key to success is in understanding your desires and being able to express them without making others feel uncomfortable or guilty. An alluring invitation to enter into your world of pleasure just might be irresistible to the right playmate.

Sagittarius Horoscope
Sagittarius Horoscope (Nov 22 – Dec 21)

Secrets can play a big role in your personal life this week with Wednesday’s New Moon in confidential Scorpio falling in your mysterious 12th house. If you’ve been hiding something, even from yourself, it might come out in the open now. Respecting others’ privacy may make the difference between strengthening or weakening a relationship. Discussing delicate matters requires all the sensitivity that you can muster, but is well worth the effort if both parties open their hearts to the process.

Capricorn Horoscope
Capricorn Horoscope (Dec 22 – Jan 19)

Your sense of order and ambition may need to be set aside so that you can look past the surface to feel what’s going on underneath it. What’s not being said now may be more powerful than any words you hear. Listen with your gut instead of your ears and you may tune in to an important message. Being a good friend, even at some sacrifice to your own immediate interests, earns you a special kind of loyalty that will pay big dividends later.

Aquarius Horoscope
Aquarius Horoscope (Jan 20 – Feb 18)

Your airy intellectual sign tends to rely a great deal on rational thinking. Logic is a great thing, yet the planetary patterns that dominate this week are much more about evoking emotions. If you apply reason to a relationship matter, you might fail to connect and understand what’s really going on. Tune in to your own non-rational senses and you will recognize what you need to do. Silence can tell you so much more than words now, so give yourself the chance to listen.

Pisces Horoscope
Pisces Horoscope (Feb 19 – Mar 20)

Wednesday’s sexy Scorpio New Moon falls in your 9th House of Travel and Learning. Your desire to understand life’s mysteries may attract you to philosophical individuals and people from faraway places. If you’re in a less-than-fulfilling relationship now, discussing your core beliefs and long-term goals should help you discover if this partnership has a future, and what you need to do to make it a rewarding one. If you aren’t feeling the love in return, it just might be the right time to strike out on your own.

Recipe for Making a Gem Essence/Elixir

Also know as gem elixirs, essences are the vibration of the crystal reserved in water and brandy. For our purposes, using a gemstone essence involves placing a few drops in a household cleanser or room spray in order to diffuse the vibration of the crystal throughout the room. You can purchase gemstone essences/elixirs already made or make your own. The gemstone essences that can be purchase can also be taken internally, but if you make your own for use in your magickal housekeeping practice. It is not recommended that you take them internally unless you are an expert, or at least until you’ve done some more thorough research of gem essence/elixir preparation.

How to Create a Gem Essence/Elixir

Items You Will Need:

  • A cleansed crystal (you choose the type according to your needs)
  • Pure water
  • A very clean, clear wine las
  • Brandy
  • A small bottle with a dropper

On a sunny day, when the moon is between New and Full, place the crystal in the glass. Pour the water over the crystal to fill the glass. Place the glass in bright sunlight for at least three hours, making sure that no shade hits it During this time, set the empty dropper bottle next to the glass to purify it with the light of the Sun. After the water and bottle have bathed in the sun for the allotted time, place your hands over the water and visualize very bright, sparkly light filing it. Say a quick prayer, like:

“Great Spirit, please infuse this water with vibrations

of healing and love. Please fully activate the

positive energy of this crystal, and fill the water

with it so that the water is powerful medicine and

a helpful ally to me in my magickal workings.”

Then fill the dropper bottle with half brandy, half water from the wineglass, using the dropper to transfer the water into the bottle. This will preserve the vibration of the crystal in the water.

Once you’ve made the essence, you can put four drops in a room spray or cleaning solution to diffuse the vibrations throughout the room. You can also put a few drops on your wrists, rubbing them together to internalize the magick and for personal healing.

A Tree Spell for Strength and Courage

You can carry out this spell with an Oak, Ash or Redwood, which are traditionally associated with courage and strength. But all trees are intrinsically powerful and so if you have a favorite grove of trees or piece of woodland, you can choose any tree you especially like. You could also use your magick tree.

By adapting the words you could, alternatively, use the tree spell to heal yourself, especially if you have a debilitating or chronic condition or suffer a lot of pain.

There are lots of ways we can return strength to trees, for example by picking up litter in woodlands, planting saplings in memory of loved ones in local woodlands on tree-planting days or campaigning for the preservation and regeneration of forests.

Timing:  If possible, as sunlight filters through the leaves, but any bright morning.

You will need:  A chosen tree. If you carry out the spell in an unfamiliar place, touch a number of trees and feel which one seems receptive to your energies.

A red (for strength and courage) or pink (for healing) biodegradable ribbon – not synthetic.

  • Touch your chosen tree with both hands at about waist height so that you can comfortably place your upright outstretched palms against the tree to create a circuit. Loop the ribbon round your power hand.
  • Your power hand will send your energy into the tree and it will flow out through your other hand, through your body and in again.
  • Stand for a few moments and allow the connection to flow.
  • Then say softly:

You are strong. Give me strength/courage/healing if it is right to be.

  • You may be rewarded by a gentle breeze through the trees, a sudden shaft of sunlight, a pleasant buzzing vibration through your hands or a sense of peace and rightness. If the tree feels unresponsive, thank the tree nevertheless and try another one.
  • When you feel the connection, press your hands more firmly against the trunk and allow the power to flow. Your whole body will feel more alive and energetic, and you will be filled with confidence, certainty and maybe even joy and harmony.
  • When you sense the power ebbing slowly, remove the pressure until your palms are just lightly resting against the trunk.
  • Thank the tree for its gifts and tie the ribbon round an accessible branch.
  • Spend a few moments sitting against the tree looking up through the leaves. When you can, return the favor to nature.

Your Daily Horoscopes for Friday, October 14th

The simplistic Taurus Moon lures us into believing that everything important can be perceived with our five main senses. But an irritating quincunx from cerebral Mercury to erratic Uranus interferes with this bucolic ideal as it zaps us with radical ideas we don’t fully understand. Although we are distracted by inexplicable thoughts, a tense opposition from sensual Venus to indulgent Jupiter pulls us back into the physical world of pleasure.

Aries Horoscope
Aries Horoscope (Mar 21 – Apr 19)

You aren’t quite ready to party because of too many lingering responsibilities, but you cannot help fantasizing about all the pleasures you would rather be experiencing today. Unfortunately, your daydreams could get in the way of what you need to accomplish. Keep in mind that you won’t really be able to enjoy yourself if your mind is on work, so you might as well stay focused and have fun later.

Taurus Horoscope
Taurus Horoscope (Apr 20 – May 20)

You may be driven by your desires today or, on the other extreme, you could just feel plain lazy. Either way, with luxurious Venus opposing indulgent Jupiter, you might grow stubborn if you believe you know an easier way to get a job done. Even if you see the benefits of someone else’s plan, you prefer to do things your way now. However, you would be wise to acquiesce on trivial matters and save your resistance for something that’s more important.

Gemini Horoscope
Gemini Horoscope (May 21 – Jun 20)

You could make a big show of supporting a co-worker’s plan while hiding your real concerns from everyone else because you don’t want to be perceived as being the negative one. The truth is that you keep changing your mind now, making you unsure of what you really think. Be careful, for others will see through your performance if you’re overly dramatic. Ultimately, your best strategy is to stay under the radar today, without bringing unnecessary attention to your position.

Cancer Horoscope
Cancer Horoscope (June 21 – Jul 22)

You might be overly effusive today when expressing your feelings to someone you really like. Naturally, you’ll need to feel safe enough to go out on a limb, but optimistic Jupiter in your social 11th house will give you the necessary boost of confidence. Unfortunately, your words could betray your message if they are misinterpreted. Being direct and to the point should minimize the possibility of any misunderstanding.

Leo Horoscope
Leo Horoscope (Jul 23 – Aug 22)

You may receive professional recognition today or, at least, acknowledgment for a job well done. Ironically, rather than feeling good about your accomplishment, you could waste energy worrying about whether or not you really deserve the positive feedback. Self-doubt will only sap your productivity; graciously accept the support you receive from others now and save your questioning for another day.

Virgo Horoscope
Virgo Horoscope (Aug 23 – Sep 22)

You are willing to turn on the charm and play the game today if you think that it will get you what you want. But your self-confidence can lead to trouble, prompting you to say more than is necessary as loquacious Mercury aspects irrepressible Uranus. Unfortunately, your message can become muddled and your desires left unsatisfied unless you maintain a clear and logical approach in your interactions with others.

Libra Horoscope
Libra Horoscope (Sep 23 – Oct 22)

Keep your money in your pocket today because your extravagant taste can land you in financial trouble if you see something that you think you must have. With opulent Jupiter opposing stylish Venus in your 2nd House of Possessions, your eye for beauty is keen now. Unfortunately, you may not take the time to consider the true value of what you’re buying. Think about what you really need rather than what you want in the spur of the moment.

Scorpio Horoscope
Scorpio Horoscope (Oct 23 – Nov 21)

It’s tempting to look at the sunny side of a partnership today, even if long shadows are cast by emotional baggage. Joyful Jupiter in your 7th House of Relationships encourages you to shine your light so brightly that the shadows disappear along with your negativity. However, the underlying issues — even if they aren’t visible — can continue to feed the tension. Find the courage to face the dark; it’s not as scary as you think.

Sagittarius Horoscope
Sagittarius Horoscope (Nov 22 – Dec 21)

You might feel like partying today and believe that you’re willing to pay the price for skipping out on your responsibilities. After all, you might reason that you can always finish up your work later. Unfortunately, you’ve probably left too much until the last minute already, making it tough to justify an early exit from work. The potential for fun won’t disappear as fast as you think; slow down and do the right thing because you’ll be able to enjoy yourself even more later on without any guilt.

Capricorn Horoscope
Capricorn Horoscope (Dec 22 – Jan 19)

Sweet Venus’ presence in your social 11th house indicates that your friends can bring you great pleasure now if you’re willing to let go of your own agenda. You may secretly imagine that you are running the show, but these unexpressed wishes shouldn’t impede your fun today. Letting your peers take the lead will work in your favor as long as you don’t give all of your power away. Take full responsibility for knowing when to say no.

Aquarius Horoscope
Aquarius Horoscope (Jan 20 – Feb 18)

Receiving praise on the job or from someone in your community can instill you with confidence, but positive feedback won’t be enough unless you also are fulfilled by what you do. Take time to think about your long-term goals and set yourself back on track if you have lost your way. Rewards that aren’t meaningful to you won’t necessarily add to the quality of your life or make you any happier. Following your bliss is your best route to success.

Pisces Horoscope
Pisces Horoscope (Feb 19 – Mar 20)

Nagging responsibilities are enough to put you in a bad mood; however, adding a fun activity to your calendar should make you feel better for a while. You are coming to the end of a very busy week and it only seems right that you should take time to relax and enjoy the pleasures of life. Just don’t go overboard; a bit of moderation will enable you to sustain the good times throughout the weekend.

Making the Tree a Place of Power

Outdoors, your tree will be naturally cleansed and empowered by the weather and if some of the items get battered, don’t worry, However, you may wish initially to cleanse and empower the tree and any artifacts on it at the first full moon after it has been created. You can do this by smudging round the tree with a smudge stick made of a bundle of tied and dried herb sticks. The following is the basic technique for doing this:

  • Light one end of the smudge stick and let the flames die down, then gently blow on the end until it glows red and you have a stream of smoke. You can use your other hand to fan the smoke.  Smudge sticks are generally held in your power hand.
  • If indoors, be careful about sparks and ventilate the room. Also try to stand where you can see the moon or at least the sky through the window. Indoors, you can substitute a sage or pine incense stick if you wish.
  • To cleanse and empower the tree, stand facing the tree at about five paces distance. Raise your smudge stick upwards to the sky and downwards to the earth.
  • Walk nine times clockwise round the tree, making alternative clockwise and anticlockwise spirals of smoke, high and low, stamping your feet as you move and chant.
  • Relax and enjoy the experience. Let your feet carry you, often in a spontaneous spiralling step movement, as you connect with earth energies and your hand weaves smoke patterns. Work barefoot if possible as you have sensitive energy centers or chakras in the soles of your feet.
  • Say continuously until you have made nine circuits:

Empowering tree, be for me, strength and healing. Keep away harm, guard what is dear, and keep love near.

  • You can repeat this ritual whenever you add something new to the tree or before using it as the focus for a personal spell or chant. Re-empower every third full moon.
