The Hermit

Keywords: inner wisdom, solitude, withdrawal, quiet, teacher or guru, research, seeker

Attributes: Virgo (Earth)

General meaning:  In order to get the answers you seek, it may be time to turn inward.  Shut out your distractions so that you may discover the wisdom within.  Answers are rarely found in another – everything you need is within yourself.  This card can also indicate a need to withdraw from circumstances in order to get a better perspective.  Sometimes a player needs a break from the grind.

Reversed:  Repeating your past mistakes.  Not learning.  This can indicate a lack of wisdom. Doing things without thinking of the consequences.  It can also indicate the extremes of solitude – like being some sort of creepy recluse.  Don’t lock yourself away.  It gets mighty lonely on that mountain top.

Affirmation: “Everything I need is within me.  I don’t need to look outside myself for answers.”

Ioho

I is Iodhadh, or Idad, the Yew tree. Much like the Death card in the Tarot, the Yew is known as a marker of death and endings. This evergreen tree has leaves that are attached in a spiral pattern to the twigs. Because of its unusual growth pattern, in which new growth forms inside the old, the Yew is strongly tied to rebirth and new life following death.

The Yew has no medicinal value at all, and in fact, it’s mostly toxic. Livestock have been known to die from eating the poisonous leaves. Berries can be used, but should be treated with caution. On a practical level, the wood of the Yew tree is very hard and resistant to water damage, so it was popular in the making of longbows in England.

In A Modern Herbal, Maud Grieve says of the Yew, “No tree is more associated with the history and legends of Great Britain than the Yew. Before Christianity was introduced it was a sacred tree favoured by the Druids, who built their temples near these trees–a custom followed by the early Christians. The association of the tree with places of worship still prevails.”

Iodhadh Correspondences

Mundane Aspects: Although it may not represent spiritual death, if Iodhadh appears, it’s a sign that major transitions are coming. Be aware of them, and realize that although not all of them are bad, they will probably be pretty significant. Now’s a good time to get rid of things which are of no use to you, in order to make room for new beginnings.

Magical Aspects: Changes are on the way, so quit clinging to beliefs and ideas that no longer serve you well. Shed the old, and welcome the new. Accept change for what it is–an asset–and stop seeing it as an obstacle. Don’t fear new things, embrace them.

Athena – Greek Goddess of Wisdom and War

Athena – Greek Goddess of Wisdom and War Source: greekmythology.com

Athena is the Olympian goddess of wisdom and war and the adored patroness of the city of Athens. A virgin deity, she was also – somewhat paradoxically – associated with peace and handicrafts, especially spinning and weaving. Majestic and stern, Athena surpassed everybody in both of her main domains. In fact, even Ares feared her; and all Greek heroes asked her for help and advice.

Atena’s Roll

Athena’s Name
Athena’s name is closely linked with the name of the city of Athens. The Ancient Greeks debated whether she got her name after the city or the other way around. Modern scholars usually agree that the former was the case.

Athena’s Portrayal and Symbolism
In art and literature, Athena is usually depicted as a majestic lady, with a beautiful, but stern face, unsmiling full lips, grey eyes and a graceful build, emanating power and authority. She is always regally clad in either a chiton or a full armor. In the former case, she is sometimes represented with a spindle. In the latter case, she wears an elaborately crested Corinthian helmet and holds a long spear in one hand and an aegis in the other.

At the center of her aegis there’s oftentimes an image of a Gorgon’s head (Gorgoneion), symbolizing the gift she got from Perseus: the head of Medusa. Just like Medusa’s eyes, Athena’s shield can also turn her enemies to stone. As a symbol of her wisdom, there’s sometimes an owl flying in Athena’s vicinity or sitting on her shoulder; from time to time there may also be a snake or an olive branch.

Athena’s Epithets
Athena was one of the most important Olympian gods and she had many functions. Unsurprisingly, she was known under many different epithets. Some of the most famous were “Virgin,” “Pallas,” “The Unwearying One,” “The One of the City,” “The One with gleaming eyes” and “The One who fights in front.”

Athena’s Early Life

The Birth of Athena
Athena was born in most miraculous circumstances. On learning that Metis’ next child may overthrow him, Zeus swallowed his first wife who was already pregnant with Athens. When the time came, Zeus started feeling tremendous headaches. As even he couldn’t bear them, Hephaestus struck him with his axe and – lo and behold! – Athena leapt out of Zeus’ head, fully armed and with a cry so mighty and fearsome that Uranus and Gaea were shaken to their bones with terror. Zeus was delighted and full of pride.

Athena’s Childhood Friend Pallas
As a child, Athena had a friend she loved above all. Her name was Pallas and she was all but her equal in the art of war. However, one day, as they were practicing some martial exercises, Athena accidentally killed her friend. Grief-stricken and in an attempt to preserve her memory, she added her friend’s name to her own. That’s why many people know Athena as Athena Pallas.

Athena, Goddess of Wisdom

Athena, The Virgin Goddess
Just like Artemis and Hestia, Athena was never swayed by love or passion. Consequently, she never had any children. Some say that Erichthonius was an exception, but, in fact, Athena was only his foster-mother. True, Hephaestus did try to violate her, but she fought him off, so he spilled his seed over the Earth, after which Gaea was impregnated. When Erichthonius was born, Athena took him under her wing, just like she would do afterward with another cult hero, Heracles.

Athena, the Patron of Athens
Poseidon and Athena had a much-publicized quarrel over who deserves to be the patron of the most prosperous Ancient Greek city, Athens. Poseidon claimed that the city would benefit more from him than Athena and to prove this, he struck his trident into a rock, creating a seawater stream which welled up in the Temple of Erechtheion on the north side of the Acropolis. Smart as she was, Athena did nothing spectacular: she merely planted an olive tree. However, the first king of Athens, Cecrops – who was the judge of the contest – realized that the olive tree was much more beneficial, since it gave the Athenians fruit, oil and wood.

Athena, the Patroness of Handicrafts
Athena was a master artisan. As much as she was the women counterpart of Ares as a war goddess, she was also the female equivalent of Hephaestus when it came to arts and crafts. Homer says that Athena fashioned ornate and luxuriously embroidered robes for Hera and herself. Some even say that she combined her two main interests to invent the war chariot and even the warship.

Athena and the Myth of Arachne
However, the most famous myth which connects Athena with handicrafts is the story of Arachne, a mortal craftswoman who boasted that she was more skillful than Athena herself. Athena offered her a chance to repent, but after Arachne refused, she challenged her to a weaving duel. The goddess fashioned a beautiful tapestry which illustrated the gruesome fate of the mortals who had the hubris of challenging the gods. Arachne, on the other hand, chose for a subject the stories of the mortals unjustly victimized by the gods. She didn’t even have a chance to finish it: enraged and offended, Athena tore Arachne’s fabric to pieces and turned her into a spider. As such, Arachne is doomed to weave ever since.

Athena, the Helper of Heroes
As a war goddess associated with wisdom – unlike Ares who was associated with mere violence – Athena was often the main helper of Ancient Greece’s greatest heroes. Most famously, she guided Odysseus during his ten-year-long journey back to Ithaca. But, she also helped many others, such as Heracles, Perseus, Bellerophon, Jason, Diomedes, Argus, and Cadmus.

Athena: Myths and Hidden Truths

Contrary to popular belief, Athena is not a war goddess in the same sense as Ares. While both deities are associated with war, their roles are fundamentally different. Athena is revered for her strategic thinking, wisdom, and diplomacy, whereas Ares embodies the violent and chaotic aspects of war. This misconception often overshadows Athena’s connection to peace, as she sought to resolve conflicts through wisdom and negotiation rather than brute force.

Athena and musical instruments
Although more commonly associated with the arts of war and weaving, Athena was also credited with the creation of the flute and the trumpet. This demonstrates her influence on the arts and highlights her multifaceted nature as a goddess of both wisdom and creativity.

Athena and snakes
Athena’s relationship with animals is another little-known aspect of her mythology. In addition to her iconic association with the owl, symbolizing wisdom and knowledge, Athena was also linked with the serpent. The snake represents transformation, rebirth, and the ability to navigate complex challenges, reflecting Athena’s own attributes as a wise and resourceful goddess.

Athena: Wisdom, War, and the Power of the Goddess

Throughout our journey into the world of Athena, we have been deeply moved by the many facets of this fascinating goddess. Her wisdom, prowess in war, and dedication to the arts have not only inspired us but also served as a reminder of the importance of balance and harmony in life. As we delved into her stories, we felt a profound connection with the heroes who sought her guidance and the city of Athens, which revered her as their patroness. We were particularly touched by her unwavering devotion to her friend Pallas, which highlights the significance of loyalty and remembrance.

Athena’s enduring influence on both the ancient world and our modern lives has been truly captivating, and we hope that our exploration of her mythos has resonated with you, bringing a newfound appreciation for the wisdom and strength of this remarkable goddess.

All Signs

This is a productive week because on Monday and Tuesday, we can brainstorm ideas; and by Wednesday, everyone’s working hard! On Thursday, there’s a New Moon in Capricorn, which gives all of us a chance to rethink New Year’s resolutions. (Plus, this is a sweet, romantic evening.) Friday is a powerhouse day to build bridges and move mountains! Basically, with Mercury going forward since last Monday (it was retrograde since Dec. 12) added to this week’s New Moon, gives us an excellent impetus to make plans about what to accomplish this year. (Of course, the trouble with making plans is you eventually have to get dressed and go out.)

Aries (March 21-April 19)

You’re ambitious and pumped to achieve something this week! Actually, someone in authority, a boss, parent or even the police might surprise you or catch you off guard. (Oops.) Be aware of this in case you have to do some damage control. However, this influence can go both ways. You might catch an authority figure off guard? Either way, keep your wits about you, especially if the posse is after you. Travel for pleasure if you can because you will enjoy this. The overall tone of this week is using your efforts and influence to boost your earnings because this is possible. Use this New Moon to think about your life direction in general. Where do you want to go? What do you want to achieve?

Taurus (April 20-May 20)

Travel plans might suddenly fall in your lap this week. Admittedly, this is the kind of unexpected change that could also work the other way, and travel plans might suddenly be cancelled? Nevertheless, be prepared for unexpected opportunities in legal matters or something to do with medicine as well as higher education, publishing and the media. If an opportunity does present itself, you will have to act fast because this window will be brief. You can also attract money to you this week, which is a good thing because you would like to get outta Dodge if you can. Perhaps you can take a short trip to explore interesting, new restaurants?

Gemini (May 21-June 20)

Keep an eye on financial matters, especially anything related to inheritances, money back from the government, insurance payouts or even issues related to your partner’s wealth because a few surprises are waiting for you in these areas. Keep checking your bank to see what’s going on. It could even be a fraud charge against a credit card? Stay on top of things because something unusual could happen; but hopefully, it will be a bonus for you and not a loss. Relations with partners and close friends are warm and cozy this week. Everyone wants to talk to you. (You love your adoring fans.)

Cancer (June 21-July 22)

Get more rest this week because your energy is flagging. Plus, conflict with a partner or close friend might be draining. Fortunately, the New Moon on Thursday is the best day of the year for you to think about how you can improve your closest relationships and partnerships. Don’t think about how the other person can change. You have no control over that. You only have control over how YOU will act in the relationship and how YOU choose to respond. Before you make a retort or a complaint, ask yourself, “Do I want to be miserable or happy in the next three hours?” That is your clue about what you should say next. William James said, “The art of being wise is the art of knowing what to overlook.”

Leo (July 23-Aug. 22)

You can look forward to a pleasant year, especially by the spring, when your life will flow more easily. Sure enough, you’re ready to work hard and be productive this week; but you’re also prepared to carve out a little time for fun and pleasure. A nice balance – just the way things should be. Romance could blossom, which is always a fun, saucy bonus. However, be prepared for something sudden and unexpected that could impact your health, your job, your work or the technology that you use every day. Be smart and get things done ahead of time so that you have some wiggle room to deal with the unexpected.

Virgo (Aug. 23-Sept. 22)

You’re in a playful mood this week! Expect fun diversions, social outings, sports events as well as pleasant times with kids. However, parents please take note: this could be an accident-prone time for your kids so be extra vigilant, especially with toddlers. Keep your eyes open. Likewise, sports accidents might also occur. On the bright side, this same influence can bring you unexpected invitations to social events, including a vacation. Admittedly, you might have to cancel an outing as well. Home repairs and home redecorating and entertaining will please you this week. This is an excellent week for writing, studying and teaching because you will be articulate and skilful with your words.

Libra (Sept. 23-Oct. 22)

Home, family and your private life will continue to be your major focus this week, probably because some kind of increased activity or chaos is taking place. Something is out of whack. This means, you will make an extra effort to restore things to the way you want them to look because you like to have a pleasant refuge for yourself. This is because more than any other sign, you are affected by your immediate surroundings. Oh sure, you can let things get messy and stay in your robe for three days, but then you will turn into an action hero and run around like a tornado to restore everything because you feel so much better when your surroundings sparkle. Meanwhile, something unexpected might occur. Stock the fridge.

Scorpio (Oct. 23-Nov. 21)

Heads up! This is a fast-paced week but it is also an accident-prone week so pay attention to everything you say and do. On the upside, this same energy can give you sudden, genius-like ideas! You might also meet new friends who are unusual. Personally, you might do something different, out of the ordinary – a break from your routine. It’s an interesting week! It’s also an excellent week to make money because you have moneymaking ideas; plus, you will attract money to you, which will allow you to buy pretty things for yourself and others. Ka-ching! Be ready for the possibility of an unexpected short trip – something out of the ordinary. This will please you because you’re playful and adventurous.

Sagittarius (Nov. 22-Dec. 21)

This week it’s important for you to be aware and stay on top of details related to earnings, cash flow, money as well as your possessions. This is because something unexpected could impact your wealth and your assets. Make friends with your bank account. Know what’s happening. Protect what you own against loss, theft or damage. However, it’s entirely possible that you will suddenly buy something unusual or high tech for your home that is fun and thrilling. (That impossibly gorgeous flatscreen TV?) This is likely because you’re tempted to spend big and impulsively! (Keep your receipts.) While you’re spending, buy yourself some wardrobe goodies because this is the perfect time to do so.

Capricorn (Dec. 22-Jan. 19)

This is a powerful week for you because both the Sun and fiery Mars are in your sign, so you’re stoked! You have energy to burn! This is why this is a productive week for you; furthermore, you will attract people and favourable situations to you. However, something unexpected might suddenly occur this week. Admittedly, it could be accident-prone. (Keep your eyes open.) But more likely, you will meet someone unusual or suddenly do something that is different, or you’ll find yourself in an unusual situation. Whatever happens could be illuminating and provocative. It might also make you feel younger. (Well, it’s true that some of you are having a secret flirtation.)

Aquarius (Jan. 20-Feb. 18)

This week you are still circling above the airport as it were because you’re in a holding pattern. You’re waiting for your birthday to arrive. Until then, you’re taking a backseat to pull your act together before you take it on the road. That’s just fine. Get your ducks in a row and enjoy a bit of downtime. Meanwhile, interactions with younger people will definitely be taking place. You might also enjoy the company of someone who is creative and artistic. They might inspire you? For some of you, a friend could become a lover. Nevertheless, there is an undercurrent this week that makes you feel restless and impulsive. Be ready for a surprise.

Pisces (Feb. 19-March 20)

You will be more involved with people this week. This might be because you’re seeing friends who are unusual, or you might be more involved with a group or an organization. Whatever the case, expect a surprise. Someone might say or do something you least expect. Or possibly, you will meet someone new who is a real character? Admittedly, someone you know might throw you a curveball or do something surprising. Nevertheless, fair Venus is at the top of your chart now, which paves the way for excellent relations with others, especially parents and bosses. (In fact, some of you might have a flirtation with a boss or someone in authority.) Quite likely, others will ask for your advice about how to make something look better even if it’s outside of your field.

Combine Witchcraft With Switchwords to Boost Your Magical Practice

What Is a Switchword?

The concept of “switchwords” is based on the work of a man called James T. Mangan. As a businessman and motivational author, Mangan was a perpetual student of life and knew how to win it. He concluded that there were certain principles that, if followed, would inevitably lead to a happy and fulfilling life.

He wrote a book called The Secret of Perfect Living in which he explains the principles in great detail. In the book, he also talks about switchwords as a way of flicking on the subconscious to get to wake up and work for you. While the book is excellent in its own way, it is lacking a proper list and guidelines for using these special words. I have written another article, How To Use Switchwords, which explains how they work and which words and combinations of words to use to help you get the desired result.

The Sheela Na Gig Project

Researching Sheela Na Gig Sculptures in the UK

Home

Sheela Na Gigs are quasi-erotic stone carvings of a female figure usually found on Norman or to be more precise Romanesque churches. They consist of an old woman squatting and pulling apart her vulva, a fairly strange thing to find on a church. The carvings are old and often do not seem to be part of the church but have been taken from a previous older, usually romanesque, building. See the weathering on the Church Stretton Sheela as compared to the surrounding masonry. It is very likely that the sheela comes from an earlier 12th century chapel that stood on the site.

  • Even though the image is overtly sexual the representation is always grotesque, sometimes even comical. They are usually associated with “hags” or “old women”. The carvings often incorporate ribs showing on the torso and sometimes facial scaring as well, although this feature seems to be more common in Ireland than in mainland Britain and the continent.
  • The carvings are normally found on Churches usually of Norman origin and of Romanesque design, but they can also be found on Secular buildings (e.g. above a stable door in Haddon Hall Derbyshire, they can also be found on many castles in Ireland )
  • Sheela na gigs can be found all over Britain, Ireland and even France and Spain. In fact Images of Lust proposes a Continental origin for them.
  • While the most common interpretation of a sheela na gig is “a pagan idol” there is little evidence for a pagan connection. The prevalence of sheelas in Ireland (far more so than anywhere else) suggests that even if the image originates on the continent the image  has meaning for the Irish. However the pagan interpretation of sheelas is by far the most popular and generates most of the debate on the figures.

The Sheela Na Gig Project
The Sheela Na Gig Project is an attempt to collate information about Sheela Na Gigs in the UK. Whereas there seems to be plenty of data on Irish figures the UK and continental figures are often overlooked. This website aims to address the balance by listing all known figures in the UK complete with photographs and include information on figures from the continent. This is by necessity a work in progress so please check back to see if any “new” sheelas have been added. You will find many figures here that appear in books on the subject and some that do not. The site also includes figures which are reported as being Sheela Na Gigs but in fact are other types of Romanesque motifs. The information on this site has mostly come from first hand visits to the figures except where indicated. We have been gathering information on figures since 1999 using visits, printed sources, information supplied by visitors to the site and users of the sheela na gig mailing list. All articles and photographs are copyright John Harding unless otherwise stated.

Introduction to Adding Magic to Your Daily Routine: 6 Easy Witchcraft Spells

Source: exemplore.com/wicca-witchcraft

Looking for Simple Magic?

After all these years of following a witchy path, one of the things I have learned is that simple is good. Maybe it’s because I am a lazy witch, but easy spells are preferable to long, drawn-out, and complicated rituals.

Does that mean that short, easy spells are less effective than carefully constructed magickal formulas? Not at all. Because the one thing that makes spells work is the energy that you raise to send them ‘out there.’

The trick is to be able to raise that energy to the necessary level whenever you need to. And the way you do that is by tapping into emotions.

To learn more about all that, read How to Begin Witchcraft: Casting Spells. There are instructions on how to cast a circle (mostly I don’t bother) and suggestions about how to use spells.

Six Simple Spells to Enhance Daily Life

These will be posted as one per day until all six are posted. They started today January 2, 2023.

January 2024 – Gardening by the Moon, Biodynamic Planting Guide

Please read this first:

1) Moon Phase x Moon Zodiac Sign:

Please keep in mind, that Gardening by Moon Phase and Gardening by Moon Zodiac Sign are two different/independent biodynamic systems and they might give you different or contradictiory gardening recommendations.

  • a) Each Moon Phase (except Full Moon and New Moon) lasts about 1 week
  • b) Each Moon Zodiac Sign lasts about 2.5 days

Try to experiment with these two systems to find which recommendations suits you the most.

2) Tropical (Astrological) x Sidereal (Astronomical) Zodiac:
(1-2 days difference in Leaf, Fruit, Root and Flower days)

There are two different zodiacs for determining the Moon Sign:

  • a) Tropical zodiac (Astrological) is based on the seasons – Vernal Equinox is fixed as 0° Aries (The 1st Fruit day)
  • b) Sidereal zodiac (Astronomical) takes into account Precession of Equinoxes and shifts 0° Aries back by cca 1-2 days. Maria Thun who was an authority on biodynamics was using this Sidereal zodiac

Try to experiment also with these two zodiac systems to find which system suits you better.

January 2024 Moon Details

The Full Moon for this month will occur later in the month on Thursday, January 25th. The New Moon is earlier in the month on Thursday, January 11th.

January Full Moon Name

The very first full moon of the year is known in many cultures as the Full Wolf Moon, which is appropriate given the deep, ancient ties between wolves and January’s full moon. For instance, the Gaelic word for January, Faoilleach, comes from the term for wolves, faol-chù, even though wolves haven’t existed in Scotland for centuries. The Saxon word for January is Wulf-monath, or Wolf Month. Meanwhile, the festival of the Japanese wolf god, Ooguchi Magami, is held in January. The Seneca tribe links the wolf so strongly to the moon, they believe that a wolf gave birth to the moon by singing it into the sky. Just why are wolves so strongly associated with January’s full moon?

The most obvious answer is because wolves are much louder and more noticeable in January, which is when breeding season begins. Wolves begin to howl more frequently and aggressively to establish their territory, threatening neighbors and enemies alike to stay far away from their breeding grounds. A small pack of wolves may even try to make themselves seem like a larger pack by howling together. While a lone wolf can sustain a howl for the duration of a single breath, an entire pack may howl in unison for longer than two minutes during breeding season.

While it makes sense for the haunting howls of wolves to be more memorable during January, how did wolves come to be associated with the full moon itself? Everyone is familiar with the iconic image of a wolf raising its head and howling at the full moon – but do wolves actually sing to the moon? While that might be a romantic idea, there’s no scientific evidence that links wolves to the lunar cycle. Humans may have begun to associate wolves with the moon simpy because they are nocturnal animals that are very active at night. In addition, wolves do raise their heads in the direction of the sky so their howls can travel over far distances to reach their pack mates as they roam. Instead of singing to the moon, they’re actually singing to their friends.

In fact, wolves are so well-known for their tight-knit communities that the Sioux tribe called January’s full moon the Moon Where Wolves Run Together. The wolf is often seen as a symbol of loyalty and protection in many cultures. The Wolf Moon is the perfect time for you to reach out to loved ones and reaffirm your connections, in preparation for deepening your bonds and taking on new challenges together over the upcoming year.

That said, lone wolves are also entirely capable of overcoming hostile conditions on their own with their resourcefulness. According to Celtic mythology, the wolf is infused with lunar power, which refers to its ability to sniff out hidden insights or knowledge, and to detect unexpected sources of danger. In some legends, the wolf even swallows the sun so the wolf can bask in the moon’s overflowing lunar power! The Full Wolf Moon is a great time for you to plan out clever ways to achieve your goals for the upcoming year. Trust your wolfish instincts when it comes to decisions, but also be tenacious in searching for useful knowledge that will help you realize your masterplan.
