A Magickal Rite for Mabon: Honor the Dark Mother
A Magickal Rite for Mabon
Honor the Dark Mother at Mabon
Demeter and Persephone are strongly connected to the time of the Autumn Equinox. When Hades abducted Persephone, it set in motion a chain of events that eventually led to the earth falling into darkness each winter. This is the time of the Dark Mother, the Crone aspect of the triple goddess. The goddess is bearing this time not a basket of flowers, but a sickle and scythe. She is prepared to reap what has been sown.
The earth dies a little each day, and we must embrace this slow descent into dark before we can truly appreciate the light that will return in a few months.
This ritual welcomes the archetype of the Dark Mother and celebrates that aspect of the Goddess which we may not always find comforting or appealing, but which we must always be willing to acknowledge. Decorate your altar with symbols of Demeter and her daughter — flowers in red and yellow for Demeter, purple or black for Persephone, stalks of wheat, Indian corn, sickles, baskets. Have a candle on hand to represent each of them — harvest colors for Demeter, black for Persephone. You’ll also need a chalice of wine, or grape juice if you prefer, and a pomegranate.
If you normally cast a circle, or call the quarters, do so now. Turn to the altar, and light the Persephone candle. Say:
The land is beginning to die, and the soil grows cold.
The fertile womb of the earth has gone barren.
As Persephone descended into the Underworld,
So the earth continues its descent into night.
As Demeter mourns the loss of her daughter,
So we mourn the days drawing shorter.
The winter will soon be here.
Light the Demeter candle, and say:
In her anger and sorrow, Demeter roamed the earth,
And the crops died, and life withered and the soil went dormant.
In grief, she traveled looking for her lost child,
Leaving darkness behind in her wake.
We feel the mother’s pain, and our hearts break for her,
As she searches for the child she gave birth to.
We welcome the darkness, in her honor.
Break open the pomegranate (it’s a good idea to have a bowl to catch the drippings), and take out six seeds. Place them on the altar. Say:
Six months of light, and six months of dark.
The earth goes to sleep, and later wakes again.
O dark mother, we honor you this night,
And dance in your shadows.
We embrace that which is the darkness,
And celebrate the life of the Crone. Blessings to the dark goddess on this night, and every other.
As the wine is replaced upon the altar, hold your arms out in the Goddess position, and take a moment to reflect on the darker aspects of the human experience. Think of all the goddesses who evoke the night, and call out:
Demeter, Inanna, Kali, Tiamet, Hecate, Nemesis, Morrighan.
Bringers of destruction and darkness,
I embrace you tonight.
Without rage, we cannot feel love,
Without pain, we cannot feel happiness,
Without the night, there is no day,
Without death, there is no life.
Great goddesses of the night, I thank you.
Take a few moments to meditate on the darker aspects of your own soul. Is there a pain you’ve been longing to get rid of? Is there anger and frustration that you’ve been unable to move past? Is there someone who’s hurt you, but you haven’t told them how you feel? Now is the time to take this energy and turn it to your own purposes. Take any pain inside you, and reverse it so that it becomes a positive experience. If you’re not suffering from anything hurtful, count your blessings, and reflect on a time in your life when you weren’t so fortunate.
When you are ready, end the ritual.

Flashback 2000 Imbolc
Daylight hours are gradually lengthening, and the Earth is beginning to stir. Although she is still in the middle of her winter’s rest, our planet subtly begins to plan. It’s appropriate that this period is represented by Aquarius, an air sign, since all change begins first in the mind. Every new thought or idea is full of raw potential as the Earth is now, nailing for the touch of fire to ignite her new growth period. Uranus is the ruler of Aquarius, and the planet best known for its jurisdiction over the future. This electric energy only looks forward, never back. It is during Imbolc, in fact, as the Sun is passing through Aquarius, that many ideas are born. As we prepare for the upcoming Equinox, then, it’s important to be sure that we’re looking ahead, as Uranus does, with all the electric enthusiasm and genius of Aquarius. Honor the potential of the coming spring by uncovering your gift of prophecy. Whether you use a crystal ball, a dream journal, or another type of predictive tool, prepare for the Equinox in your heart, by understanding how much is possible now.

Flashback 2000 Lammas
At Lammas, the Sun is at the very peak of Leo, the sign this planet loves above all others. Our star’s warmth is at its most powerful now in the Northern Hemisphere, as it appears directly overhead. At this time, life too, ia at its peak—as are the crops. The ancients celebrated this festival by giving thanks for their first harvest, most especially the grain harvest, even as they accepted the beginning of the God’s descent into the underworld. The myth of the asteroid-Goddess Ceres (Demeter), giver of the grain, also relates to this season. It was now when she would bid her daughter Farwell, since Persephone was obligated to return to the Underworld to rejoin Hades (Pluto). So bereaved was Ceres to see her daughter leave her, she refused to all the Earth to produce grain until her return. At this time, nothing, modern practitioners should be remind of both astrological principles: the fullness of life the Sun brings, and the necessity for rest, as signified by the coming fall.

The Moon’s current phase for today and tonight is a New Moon phase. During this phase the Moon is too close to the sun in the sky to be visible. Like the Full Moon, a New Moon happens at a very specific time when the sun and moon have the same ecliptic longitude and it can be measured down to the second it occurs.

The Moon’s current phase for today and tonight is a Waning Crescent phase. In this phase the Moon’s illumination is growing smaller each day until the New Moon. During this part of the Moon cycle, the Moon is getting closer to the Sun as viewed from Earth and the night side of the Moon is facing the Earth with only a small edge of the Moon being illuminated. This phase is best viewed an hour or 2 before the sunrise and can be quite beautiful if you’re willing to get up early. It can also be a great time to see the features of the Moon’s surface. Along the edge where the illuminated portion meets the dark side, the craters and mountains cast long shadows making them easier to observe with a telescope or binoculars.

The Holographic Principle and a Teapot
Image Credit: CaltechExplanation: Sure, you can see the 2D rectangle of colors, but can you see deeper? Counting color patches in the featured image, you might estimate that the most information that this 2D digital image can hold is about 60 (horizontal) x 50(vertical) x 256 (possible colors) = 768,000 bits. However, the yet-unproven Holographic Principle states that, counter-intuitively, the information in a 2D panel can include all of the information in a 3D room that can be enclosed by the panel. The principle derives from the idea that the Planck length, the length scale where quantum mechanics begins to dominate classical gravity, is one side of an area that can hold only about one bit of information. The limit was first postulated by physicist Gerard ‘t Hooft in 1993. It can arise from generalizations from seemingly distant speculation that the information held by a black hole is determined not by its enclosed volume but by the surface area of its event horizon. The term “holographic” arises from a hologram analogy where three-dimension images are created by projecting light through a flat screen. Beware, some people staring at the featured image may not think it encodes just 768,000 bits — nor even 2563,000 bit permutations — rather they might claim it encodes a three-dimensional teapot.

Witchcraft/Magickal
From witchswap.com
Sunday
is associated with the Sun and zodiac sign of Leo. I add Cancer and Aries to this because they are also associated with the Sun. The elemental correspondence is Fire, (shocking, I know). In my opinion Sunday is the most diverse day in terms of its spell correspondences. Spells for success, money/prosperity, healing, protection, insight, fame/power, attraction and empowerment are just a few of the spells that can be amplified if performed on a Sunday. Gods/Goddesses: Helios, Brigid. Brigid is the Goddess of Fire and the Hearth and is celebrated on Imbolc, which is known as the “Festival of Lights”. By invoking her on Sundays you can tap into her powers of illumination and maternal energy. Angel: Michael. Archangel Michael is the ultimate warrior. He can be petitioned to help aid your cause or to destroy an enemy. If this is an angel you work with often, Sunday would be an auspicious day for honoring him and offering him gifts of thanks.
The Eight Phases of the Moon
The Moon, Queen of the NIght, and starship of the Mother Goddess, is the influential planetary body in the sky. Our response to her power is deeply embedded in us. She comes to us with a history; the representation of her major phases is still replicated today — )0( — and is used to symbolize the covenant with the Great Goddess. Her eight Phases related to the solar cycle of Pagan holidays, and the symbology is analogous, as both cycles start with the absence of light and march forward sing the same song.
The New Moon Phase
At the begging of Moon’s cycle, she slowly emerges from under the beam of the Sun, where she has been resting and gathering energy for the coming journey. From 0 degrees to 44 degrees in her zodiac cycle, the New Moon celebrates the rebirth of light, just as we do at Yule. The maiden is setting the stage and magic is afoot!
The Crescent Moon Phase
In the Crescent Moon phase (45 degrees – 89 degrees), she appears in the sky like a slim harvest sickle. Her curve mimics the round belly of the letter D. With the faintest of light in the sky, this Moon is poised for action, energizing new projects with fresh power, and offering new challenges. This phase is related to the sabbat of Imbolc.
The First Quater Phase
Seven days after the New Moon, the First Quarter Moon (90 degrees – 134 degrees) can add balance and considerable magic to your endeavors that burgeon with life. The waxing phase is the time to plant your sees, be they ideas or moonflowers. You’ll feel the drive to get a move on, to let go of the past, and be aggressive in working new spells. Half of the Moon is light and half is dark, just like the Quarter Day, Eostre (Ostara) or Spring Equinox, which divides the solar day into equal parts of light and dark.
The Gibbous Phase
Gibbous is a wonderful medieval word that describes the hunchbacked swell of the lady Moon as she moves from Maiden to Mother (135 degrees – 179 degrees). It’s time to evaluate new growth, eliminating what doesn’t work and finding more successful ways of doing things. Refine goals and prepare for the work of the Full Moon. The Gibbous Moon indicates that the most powerful time for magic is about to peak. This phase is related to the sabbat Beltane.
Full Moon Phase
The Full Moon (180 degrees – 224 degrees) reflects the golden glory of the Sun, light the night for ritual or planting or other agrarian* tasks. Crystals, herbs, and oils bated in the Moon’s light will be energized and ready to dedicate for pathwork. Consolidate efforts to move towards completion in short-term projects. This is the last of the big energy in this cycle for growth, but major undertakings can still be aggressively be set in motion. Look to the mythology of Midsummer to find a more profound meaning of the Full Moon
Disseminating Moon Phase
The Disseminating Moon (225 degrees – 269 degrees) indicates that it’s time to start drawing in; the project set in motion at the New Moon is maturing. Diets and other work of “letting go” can only properly be started now with the waning Moon. As the Moon starts to shrink, the side with the rounded curve of the letter D loses light and the viable curve faces the other way shaped like a C. This phase is related to the sabbat of Lammas.
Third Quater Phase
The Third Quater Moon (270 degrees – 314 degrees) is the crone-wise and still very powerful, but no longer fecund**. This Mabon Moon continues to power banishing work, expelling illness, negative thoughts and bad habits. Now is the time to weed and prune your life and in the garden. As worked started at New Moon crystallizes in its completion you are already beginning to feel the draw of a new cycle.
Balsamic Moon Phase
The Balsamic Moon (315 degrees – 360 degrees) provides the three and half days when you can best go indie yourself to search out what drives your passions and dislikes, so that you can understand them and let go. It’s necessary to prepare yourself for the rebirth of the next cycle, even while feeling out of step with everyone in the current one. If you missed the power of the FUll Moon phase to look into the future, the last 30 degrees of this cycle are very potent for prophecy work. This phase is related to the sabbat Samhain.
The Dark Moon
The Dark Moon rests for three and a half days while she gathers information and lays the foundation to implement new ideas. It occurs just before the beginning of the next lunar cycle.
Editor’s Note: The eight phase of the Moon as they are described in this article are different for the Moon’s quarter system, which used on the date pages of this book. The eight phase system divides the Moon cycle into segments, each of which can influence magical begun at that time. The quarter system divides the Moon’s cycle into four parts. The first quarter begins at the New Moon and continues until the Moon has moved 90 degree; the second quarter begins at 90 degrees and continues until the Full Moon (180 degrees); the third quarter begins with the FUll Moon (180 degrees) and continues for another 90 degrees to 270 degrees; and the fourth quarter begins at 270 degrees and continues to 360 degrees, a perfect circle and just before 0 degrees, the place of the New Moon. Although the two systems are different, you can easily compare them and use them together. In the quarter system, the New Moon phase and Crescent Moon phase of the eight-phase system combine to make the first quarter; the First Quarter phase and the Gibbous Moon phase combine to make the second quarter; the Full Moon and the Disseminating Moon phase combine to make the third quarter; The Third Quarter phase and the Balsamic Moon phase comebine to form the Forth Quarter. The DArk Moon is the time just before the end of one cycle and the beginning of the next. Although there are no actual days between cycles, it is the time just before the New Moon when seeds, dreams, and plans of the new cycle await birth.
