The thief has forced open the perilous box of universal, magickal knowledge within his subconscious mind and thinks to steal away with the power (swords) he found within. Its symbolism is derived from the birch, a pioneer tree that first repopulated the region after the Ice Age. The symbol has strong associations with spring and the Beltane festival, being the chosen tree for the maypole and the fuel for the Beltane fires.
