Making a Protective Witch’s Bottle

Protective witches’ bottles, some dating from before Roman times and other from as late as the beginning of the twentieth century, may be seen in museums around the world. There are fine examples in the small and eccentric but fabulous Pux Rivers Museum in Oxford, UK. Witch bottles usually consisted of a sealed stone or bellaramine jar, filled with bent iron nails and pins, and buried under the entrance of a house. Iron is considered the most protective metal against all kinds of harm. Although the old witch bottles were often designed to guard against witches, the modern ones are used to repel any form of malevolence or bad feeling that may enter the home.

You will need:

A dark glass or stone bottle with a cork or tight lid (the kind used for cider is ideal); some sealing was (optional); enough old rusty nails and pins to half fill the bottle; enough cheap or sour red wine or vinegar to almost fill the bottle; 2 or 3 sprigs of fresh rosemary of 2-3 tsp dried rosemary.

Timing:

At around 10 p.m., when the moon is no longer visible in the sky.

The Spell:

  • Working in a dim light; rinse the bottle under a tap.

  • Place the rusty nails and pins in the bottle, bending them if you can to form a horseshoe shape.

  • Add the rosemary and then enough wine to cover the nails (the original protective fluid was urine, but this is not suitable for modern witch bottles!)

  • Close the bottle and, if you choose, seal it with sealing wax (the traditional method).

  • Shake the bottle nine times, as you do so saying:

Keep away harm,

Keep away danger,

Keep from my door

False friend and stranger.

Drive away malice,

Drive away spite,

Guard this my dwelling

By day and by night.

  • Either bury the bottle in deep earth near the front or back door or keep it on a high shelf in a basement or cellar. Alternatively, place it high as possible in the house, when it cannot be seen.

Today’s I Ching Hexagram for July 20th is 10: Treading Carefully

10: Treading Carefully

Hexagram 10

General Meaning: People of ability find their way and make progress even in difficult circumstances. Consider your steps carefully when you are surrounded by changing forces. Weak and strong forces (or people) can co-exist when the weaker element does not impose upon the stronger, when the weaker maintains good humor and avoids taking bold action. When treading among sleeping tigers — or slippery stones — step gingerly and don’t stumble.

In the company of strong, brash people, rushing wildly ahead brings misfortune. Now is not a good time for taking the initiative; rather, try getting by with a little grace and good humor. In the court of a powerful king, the jester often has more power than the prince.

Your Daily Number for July 20th: 4

Today could be demanding and somewhat frustrating as you find yourself engaged in routine affairs. Focus on organizing your world and opportunity will follow. It’s a great day to consider investing in long-term endeavors. Don’t let disagreements with a loved one regarding money ruin your day.

Happy Saturday to all my Readers!

I hope everyone is having a great weekend. I am so sorry I am running late today. Today is not really a good day for me at all. I have been crying off and on since yesterday afternoon. I had a real good tear jerker this morning and then I took a nap. I know someone once said I whined alot. Today that person would be right. I know everyone knows I had three wildcats. I also had three little precious kittens and a mother cat. I went out yesterday morning and I generally holler, “where are my babies?” and the kittens come a running. I feed them, pet them and love the devil out of them. When I went outside yesterday to feed them, I hollered and nothing came. My pentagram flipped over. I knew them something was horribly wrong. I walked around the porch and I saw where the lattice had been crashed thru. This is where the momma cat and kittens stayed. There was nothing there except fur, fur everywhere. I started to cry. Then I got up and walked around the porch and found one of the wildcats dead. This like to have killed me. I picked him up and cried and cried. Then I heard a faint cry. I got up to find it. It was one of the other wildcats and he was hurt. Something had tried to kill him by get at his jugular vein. He had bites all over him. I called the vet and I rushed him to the vet. The vet did emergency surgery on him and he is going to be fine. The other wildcat I checked out before we left. He was in the barn covered in blood. I washed him off and he was all right. I have one little kitten left and two wildcats. We were talking to some of our neighbors and they have had animals that are being killed too. They decided that late in the afternoons they were going hunting. In the late afternoon is when the coyotes and the coyodogs are most active. I know I probably didn’t spell coyodog right. A coyodog is an animal that mother or father was a dog and the mother or father was a coyote.  This animals are meaner than a coyote. These creatures will attack humans and anything else that sticks its head out.

The poor little kitten that managed to escape the killings, I found him yesterday afternoon. I had walked these grounds and hollered for him. Nothing! Then late yesterday, I got the idea to get a can of food and pop the top. I popped the top and here he came. He wasn’t running, he was staggering and looked very dazed. I picked him up and brought him in the house. I believe the poor kitten was in shock. Today he is doing much better. He is took up with me in my bedroom. My husband says he looks like my other cat. I don’t see it but he does. I want to keep him but my husband doesn’t want anymore cat after Stinker is gone. But I honestly believe he is leaning toward me keeping him. At least, I know he will make his mind up that way, lol! But I just wanted to tell you why it is not a good day for me. I have lost two momma cats, two kittens and a wildcat. It is a very sad day for me.

I am going to post spells today. Something I don’t never seem to have time to do during the week day. If some of them turn out to be geared toward the nasty side, now you know why.

I love you all and have a very blessed weekend,

Lady A

Bird Migration

Bird Migration

Each year, with the onset of Winter, flocks of birds from the Northern hemisphere fly long distances to warmer territories in the South. Birds navigate their way by following internal compasses comprising tiny grains of a mineral called magnetite, stored in their brains. During rest stops they recalibrate their inner compasses using the positions of the stars to account for the fact that magnetic north lies 1,000 miles (1,600 kilometres) from the North Pole. When rest stops are too short, birds can get disorientated. In a similar way we possess a sense of inner knowing that helps us to find our way in life. But, unless we allow ourselves daily periods of time alone in which to tune into this inner knowing and recalibrate it against changing circumstances, we, like migrating birds, can lose our way.

Your Daily Number for July 8th: 7

Today has strong spiritual overtones for you. It’s a great day for communing with nature and acknowledging all things good in your world. A debt may be finally paid. Be aware of the possibility for mechanical breakdowns.

Happy, Happy Friday! It’s A Thank Goddess It’s Friday Day!

Happy Friday, dear readers! I am sorry I am running late and I will try to keep this short (yeah, right! I can’t keep nothing short, lol!). I got carried away with the front page. If you haven’t figured it out yet, I am a perfectionist witch, lol! If I am going to do something I want it to look good. Or else why waste your time doing it? Then I had to run out and feed the wildcats. That was a feat in itself. I generally feed them around nine and now they get fed at eleven, ha! They were all over me and they are getting so big. They stretch their arms out and they reach up to my elbows almost. So you really don’t want to miss feeding them. My hubby gets on to me now when I go and sit down with them and they rough house me. One is so sweet. I turned the porch light out the other night and he just curled up beside me. I softly petted him and talked to him in a low whisper and he just purred. You could just feel the bond forming. I thought maybe it was a one time thing, but it wasn’t he has done it ever since. He tries to lay in my lap and that is funny. He has paws hanging out all over the place. I would guess he weighs close to 30 lbs., now. My poor legs are about to break off. I don’t think he would care either. He would have a piece of me to carry around, lol! Enough with that……….

I meant to touch on this yesterday and got carried away with violence. I had some good comments too and I want to responds to some of them. Thank you for your comments, they are deeply appreciated. It is also good to hear someone else’s opinion for a change, thank you again. What I meant to talk about was my posting “The Witches’ Ten Commandments.” I had a couple of responses about this being the first thing we learned as witches. Perhaps it was and perhaps it wasn’t. Remember some witches answer to no one but theirselves. But that is not the point, the point is yes, some witches do learn this right off the bat. There are new witches coming to this site to learn. I posted these “Commandments” for them. I am doing my best to try to make this a site for everyone. A site that will benefit the Elder witch to the new comer. And let me tell you it ain’t easy. But to clear up any confusion, the “Commandments” were post for the new ones to the Craft and perhaps the older ones that just wanted to be refreshed.

You have any ideas for the blog or would like something posted just let me know. I am still moving info from the old group and also adding new never before seen info to the site. So tell me what you think, as always I love to hear from my readers. Till then……

Goddess bless you and yours,

Lady A

Lady A’s Spell of the Day for June 30 is Summer Ritual for a Sunny Will

Adapted from Witch in the Kitchen, by Cait Johnson.Good will is certainly a concept to ponder. How many of us can truly say we have it?

Now, as warm colors and blazing vitality evoke the power of the will, we can align ourselves with our deepest, best selves with this simple, ancient ritual. After all, summer invites us to think of ways we can harness our immense fiery will in order to give something unique and meaningful to the world, knowing that when we do the things we most love to do we nourish ourselves and others, for the good of all.

This just takes a sunny day and a little birdseed. And it is such a joyful way to celebrate the sun and our own capacity for a truly good will:

Go to a place where wild birds are known to congregate (if you’re a city-dweller, pigeons will do just fine). Stand facing the sun. Close your eyes and imagine that the golden sunlight is streaming into your solar plexus, your will center. Now visualize that you are beaming that golden light back to the sun as you say:

I will to will Thy will.

Now, carefully sprinkle the birdseed around yourself in as perfect a circle as you can, and say:

May my will grow lighter, to feed the world. Now it is done.

Step outside the circle and find a place to sit quietly and observe. Watch as the birds discover and feed themselves with your gift. As each bird takes flight after its meal, visualize your will center growing more light and generous and warm.

Happy Wednesday, dear friends!

Good morning, dear friends! I will make this brief and get right to work for you. I am sorry there was no postings yesterday. I had to go to the doctor to make sure all my screws, cages and pins were still in place.  In case, some of you don’t know I have a huge fusion in my back. I have to go every year and make sure everything is still in place. Good news, I don’t have any screws loose, lol!

Now off to work! Have a great one, everybody!

Happy & Blessed Sunday To All!

Good Sunday morning to all! I hope you are having a wonderful day so far. And your weather much better than mine. It has stormed all morning long and still at it.

I promise to keep this short and sweet today. Yes, really! You remember I was talking about the pendant I was wanting to concentrate to me last evening. The pendant has gorgeous emerald jewels in it. The more I looked at it, the more I wanted to wear it. So I said what the heck. I got everything ready for my simple ritual. My two familiars always attend to me during my spells and rituals, today was no different. My cat sits in the floor and my puppy on the edge of the bed right behind me. If I am doing a ritual or spell and there is someone around that shouldn’t be she lets me know. Well I had started the ritual and was getting close to the end. All of a sudden, Kiki warned me that someone was around. I just figured hubby had opened the door and saw what I was doing and shut it. Shortly after that I closed the ritual and put on the pendant. I turned around and there stood my neighbor with his weedeater in hand with his mouth hung open. I like to have sh*t! I could not believe it. When you are in your home, you expect privacy. Ha, not around here apparently. My yard is well-kept, there is no reason for him to be here at all.  I told my husband about it and he was pissed too. He told me that he guessed I would have to start pulling the blinds when I decided to do some spell work. He also said he knows you are a witch now for sure. I was just so mad I couldn’t stand it. I walked out in the yard and asked the man why he was in my yard. His reply was he was just trying to help out. I guess I was rude but I told him I didn’t need his help. Then he had the gall to ask me what I was doing in my own house. I lost it. I can’t even post what I said to him. If what I said to him doesn’t keep his butt at home, nothing will. I am a private person and I hate my privacy violated. He was the same one that followed me to where I feed the wildcats at. I have food I buy and also if I have scraps I load them up on the four-wheeler and take them down to the creek. I was sitting down and a couple of the wildcats were loving all over me. The man had brought his gun. It was a bolt-action high-powered 30-06 and I heard it. I asked him, “what the heck he was doing there?” He told me, “that he thought I was being attacked by those cats.” I stood up and the cats were loving around my legs and growling at him. I told him that he needed to leave and not to follow me again. After that I moved the feeding place for the big cats. I figured he just wanted to know where they were to come back and kill them all.  But it just amazes me how people like to stick their nose in other people’s business.

Well I feel much better now. I just had to blow up about the neighbor and now I feel better. I hope you don’t have neighbors like me. If you do, I feel sorry for you. Well I am off to do the posts now and think what I am going to do to my nosey neighbor, hee, hee, hee! Got any good ideas?

Happy, Happy, Happy Wednesday To Ya’ !

Good Morning or Afternoon my lovely readers! How are all of you doing today? As you know and probably noticed I have been rather quite since my momma wildcat was found dead in the field. She had been shot and then the people brought her over here for me to find, well on our property.  I am dealing with this rather well now. I am still trying to find where my hubby hide the gun cabinet key but life is good. He keeps telling me, “No way in hell are you getting that key now. You will go to the pen.” No, I won’t. Anyway we are having a battle over the key. I know he is right. But you know how we hate for men to know they are right!!!

I have to tell you something funny though, we found the little babies the momma left behind. There were three of the little devils and they are absolutely adorable. I found out something funny last night. I came in the house to get their food to feed them. Stinker was up on the table mad and jealous. So I took the time to love him and reassure him, he was the best cat on the planet. Well he had loved all over my hands and my arms. I didn’t think a thing about it. I went back outside and two of the babies thought I was their mother. They came running, meowing and looking for a tit. When I sit on the ground, I sit Indian style. These two little brats found my toes and they did everything they could to get milk out of them. Well I finally got them to bed. I came up the porch steps and at the back of the porch sit two of the big male wildcats. I came in the house to get their food and by the time I got back out there, they were eating the babies food. I reached for the one shotgun hubby will let me have (because it is filled with rock salt). I took it outside, aimed at their butts and let them have it. Rock salt won’t hurt them just stings like hell and scares them.  They ran off.  Well I had to come back outside and count the kids to make sure they were all right. When I did, I found two of them sitting on the steps. I noticed another tail under the car where I had been hiding their food. I thought this is strange. I went to check to see if this was the little runt that was missing. I got down on both knees and peeped under the car and looking back at me was the biggest skunk I had ever seen in my life. I screamed the skunk jumped up and hit its head and we both run. After I calmed down and got to thinking about how that skunk looked when he saw me, I started laughing. The poor fella, if he had sprayed me, he wouldn’t have been a poor fella. I thought about that also. What if he had sprayed me? Oh my goodness! I don’t even want to think about it. But this place has turned into wild kingdom. All I can say is, “Wish you where here!”
