Let’s Talk Witch – Dowsing

Spell Caster

The cunning man was consulted in order to find lost objects, and often used dowsing to achieve this. Dowsing is the intuitive use of pendulums or rods to locate things and energies or answer questions. It is an art almost anyone can master. Cunning men often used pendulums, either directly dowsing over a specified location for a dropped ring for example, or over a map. Dowsing may also be used to identify power spots, earth energies and ley lines, either in situ or on a map. It may be used to pick out a useful crystal or other object from a collection and so on and so on.

Dowsing is usually done with a pendulum, a forked stick or L rods. The forked hazel stick is most often used to locate water, the forks held in the hands. The tip of the stick will go down when the dowser locates his objective.L rods consist of two bent pieces of metal held in the hands which swing together when the objective is encountered. They are used to locate water, minerals, ley lines, earth energies and illness in the body. They can easily be made by cutting a section from a metal coat hanger about 9 inches long, plus one of the bends and four or five inches after the bend. You will need two of these. Hold the shorter pieces loosely in the hands pointing in front of you, parallel. Try walking over a spot where you have placed a bowl of water. The two rods should cross over each other of their own accord, then move back out as you clear it.

Pendulums are valuable divinatory tools and a pendulum is nothing more than a balanced weight on the end of a thread or fine chain. It does not need to be crystal, gold plated or expensive. One of the most successful dowsers I know uses a button. A wedding ring or sewing needle attached to a length of sewing thread has been used for centuries to try to determine the sex of a newborn baby – rotating for a girl and swinging to and fro for a boy. The method was used commercially in the nineteenth century, with a small device containing a miniature pendulum, for sexing chickens whilst still in the egg.

To use a pendulum you must determine your own responses. For some a ‘yes’ response will be a clockwise swing, for others the pendulum will go back and forth. Ask it some questions you know the answers to and determine the result.

Pendulums are extremely easy to make. Take a length of wire. Starting at the top and leaving an inch spare, wrap the wire around your chosen weight lengthways and bring it back up to the top. Twist the two ends and bring the longer end down around the weight again at 90 degrees from the first. Bring it to the top once more, twist again with the other end and fashion the remaining wire into a ring by wrapping it twice around a small knitting needle and cut of any excess. Thread the cord or chain through this ring and you have a pendulum.

Let’s Talk Witch – Divination With The Pendulum

Let’s Talk Witch – Divination With The Pendulum

I will be the first to admit it. When I am in a hurry and want to know something, I reach for my pendulum. I know most people associate the use of pendulums with dowsing as a way of searching for water. But, of course, that is only one use of the pendulum. When you use a pendulum for the purpose of divination, you’re searching for answers hidden within yourself.

A pendulum consists of a small weight – a crystal or some other stone, for instance – hung from a short chain or ribbon. You hold the chain/ribbon, letting the pendulum dangle at the end of it, while you ask a simple question. The pendulum responds by swinging in a direction predetermined to mean either yes or no.

A pendulum isn’t capable of handling complex questions, but it can be used to answer any yes or no question. Most of the time, a pendulum will swing from side to side to let you know that the answer to your question is no. A backward and forward movement generally means yes. However, it’s a good idea to ask your pendulum aloud which direction will indicate yes and which will indicate no.

Sometimes the pendulum swings in a diagonal line. This can mean the matter is uncertain or that your question can’t be answered at this time. You might want to try asking later. If the pendulum doesn’t move, try asking a different question or phrase the question in a different manner. If your pendulum circles in a clockwise direction, it usually means the situation you’re asking about is favorable. If the pendulum moves in a counterclockwise circle, conditions seem unfavorable.

You can use a pendulum to dowse for just about anything, from buried treasure to the best spot to drill a well. You can dowse an area to find a lost object. You can dowse a house or apartment to see if it’s right for you. Or dowse the land to determine the  best place to build a home, business, shrine, garden, etc.

You can even dowse a map. This technique is great if you’re thinking about taking a trip or looking for a new place to live. Hold the pendulum over a map of an area that interests you and ask, “Is this the place?” If the response is no, try another area. Keep at it until the pendulum says yes.

Want to try something cool with your pendulum? When you purchase a candle from a store or buy a Craft item over the internet this is great to do. I always wonder if the item has any residue left over from its maker. Let’s say I just bought a new candle from the store. I bring it home, before I ever put it on my altar, I get my pendulum. Now I take the pendulum and hold it over the candle. If the candle has picked up any past residue the pendulum will start to swing outwards in a circle. This tells me that the candle does have past residue and I must take care in cleansing it. It the pendulum does not move, it has no past reside and I can cleanse as normal. But you can do this with any Craft item you purchase and it will work the same.

For such a small Craft tool, you will be amazed at all the things a pendulum can tell you can do for you.

Let's Talk Witch – Finding Power Center

Let’s Talk Witch – Finding Power Center

Sacred spots exist in every country and region, perhaps in your own backyard. All you have to do to locate them is attune your awareness to pick up the earth’s vibrations. As you seek out places that house special energy, pay attention to these key indicators that tell you you’re standing on holy ground:

Body heat increases (without the sun coming out or other environmental causes).

Dowsing rods or pendulums react positively, as if finding a hit.

The place appears repeatedly in your dreams, usually with something magickal or spiritual taking place there.

An emotional sense of peace and tranquility settles over you like a warm blanket.

You get a feeling that you’re not alone (as if the animals, birds, trees, or other living things are trying to communicate with you through motion, sounds, or symbols).

Hairs on your arms rise, as if you’ve been exposed to a current of energy, or you feel a sudden chill.

There are unusually lush displays of plants uncharacteristic of the region; for example, a streak of bright green grass was once called a faery trail, and these usually follow ley lines.

Your totems and power animals appear there regularly.

You experience a sense of timelessness, as if there is only now.

You can also dowse an area to assess its energy. A pendulum will pick up speed and spin enthusiastically in the presence of a ley line or power center. Dowsing rods tip down toward the ground when they connect with this vibrant earth energy. You can even dowse a map to find a sacred site near your home.

A Vacation Spell

A Vacation Spell

For a change of pace you may want to try using some magic to decide the best destination for a quick get away. You will need a pendulum and a map. Narrow down your choices to between three and five destinations and spread the map in front of you. First, as the pendulum to show you a “no” answer and a “yes” answer. When you have determined which way it swings for yes and no, hold it over each sight. Ask aloud if this would be a good place for your vacation. The pendulum will swing giving you a yes or no answer. If the pendulum swings in circles or vibrates wildy, avoid that location. When the pendulum answers yes to one or more locations you have your destinations!

Seeing Through Symbols

Seeing Through Symbols

Author: Lady GoldenRaven

In my twenty-plus years of practicing, I have tried many forms of divination. Over these years, there are only four types of divination I use on a regular basis. These are: my pendulum, nature, my scrying mirror/bowl, and runes.

Before I continue though, I want to make it clear, that as Wytchs, shamans, and other holistic health workers: We are not allowed to diagnosis illness, etc. But after many years of experience, you can format your opinion and do what is needed. I have the ability to work in conjunction with many physicians who are open-minded about holistic health. Let them make a diagnosis, and go from there.

My pendulum is my goddess pendant which I wear around my neck. I use it more for healing practices. If the dis-ease of the person is unknown, I take my pendulum and hold it over the five points of the pentagram. Depending on the speed and direction of rotation of the pendulum over the five points, I determine what this person needs as far as treatment. As you know, the points represent Air, Fire, Water, Earth, and Spirit. Each of these rule specific systems of the body. When one is overabundant in or lacking in one or more areas, you can figure out what the problem is.

I also use it in my Reiki practice at times. I will hold the pendulum over each of the chakras. If it spins deosil, it means the person is either at normal “rotation” or possibly too fast, depending on the speed of the pendulum’s rotations. If it spins widdershins, this person is depleted in energy in that chakra. Although I am a Reiki Master/Teacher and do not need to do this, I will in cases of severe illness or certain “emergency” works. I have used it over poppits of those I am helping “in absentia” as well.

In both instances, I use it to “divine” the problem so that I may know what to utilize in their therapy. I also use it as any other would for divination. I have held it over parchment with questions written on it. I have held it over poppits in order to find answers to questions such as “Is this person faithful?” or “Is this person pregnant?” You get the idea. This is one of the most accurate forms for my purposes as far as divining for others.

I use the forces and critters of nature on a daily basis. I am not employed at the moment, so I have most of the day to watch and learn. Many times, I have no question to ask, but the powers that be will send signs which I note for future reference. Where I live, it is not uncommon to see eagles soaring on the wind. However, to have one swoop down to me, almost landing on my balcony, was a sign to me. I recently went through a period of major crises. This is when the eagle swooped down. I was literally on the edge of sanity. I am a very strong woman, but for some unknown reason, this time, I felt like I was losing my grip. I could not even bring myself to do Sabbats, Esbats, or other workings. After seeing the eagle, I knew things would be okay eventually. Within one week, three out of five of my crises were over.

I also have a hawk which will land on a tree branch right off from my balcony; we do communicate quite frequently, like old friends. She has also given me many words of wisdom for use at a later time.

I am so closely attuned with nature, it amazes even me. So, I took that to the next level. One day, I was standing in the middle of the woods, a beautiful sunny August day, no clouds, slight breeze. I decided to do a Drawing Down the Sun ritual. I stood there in the star position and did my thing. I also asked the Sun God a question. It was around my daddy’s birthday, who by now, had been on the other side for seven years. Did I ever get an answer! As I stood there, I felt a cold wet sensation on my left fingers. I slowly opened my eyes and turned my head. Was I surprised to see a doe and her fawn. She had touched my hand. They both stood there as I turned my head. Now this is rare for deer. Most of you know they are gone in a flash at the first notice of movement, and especially human scent. There we stood, eye to eye. It seemed like a lifetime that we stood together in the clearing. After a few seconds, though, they scampered on their way. I looked back to the Sun, thanked Him for His answer to my concerns. My ex-husband and his best friend watched in awe from camp. I was only back a few feet from the treeline, so they had a perfect view. My point: I took the signs given to me from the Sun God in the form of the doe and fawn as my answer. Now, why a doe and fawn and not a buck? Maybe due to the nature of my question.

It is not just animals from whom I seek answers. I also look to the winds, the flames of fire, and the trees as well. We all know what it means when the winds blow from a specific direction. The same with the flickering of a candle flame or campfire. You can also find answers from talking to the trees. Depending on which gift is given will determine the answer to your question. An acorn finds its way to you; a symbol of strength, the Mighty Oak. Also birch, willow, ash, all give answers in their own unique ways.

The scrying bowl/mirror and runes, I use for those people “seeking” answers. Similar to tarot readings, the answers can be found through the runes in the same manner. These I use more for mundane problems.

Over all, when I seek spiritual answers, I tend to look to nature and my pendulum first. When looking for answers to mundane questions, I use the other divination methods. Do I take the answers I receive and apply them to the question/problem at hand? The answer is: It depends. I will take the advice given, combined with knowledge of the subject already understood. Then I make my decision. For spiritual answers, yes I tend to act on the signs/omens received, but for mundane topics, no.

Your Magickal Spell for July 16 – Spell to Send Love & Light Through Pendulum

Magickal Spell for Monday, July 16th

Spell to Send Love and Light Through a Pendulum

Even if you are not confident about sending healing, you can transmit love and light to a person who is ill or unhappy or whom you know is under intense pressure. The easiest and most powerful tool for this is a crystal pendulum. It will simplify and transmit your own positive feelings and wishes, even if you have never tried healing before.

What You Will Need:

A white or purple candle; a clear quartz or amethyst crystal pendulum (even a small one works).
When To Cast:

At last light.

The Spell:

  1. If possible facing the sunset, light the candle.
  2. Hold the pendulum in front of the candle so that the light shines on it.
  3. Spin the pendulum gently so that the candle light reflects through it. As you look at the spiraling light, project into the pendulum (as if you were looking through a window) an image of the person you are sending love and light to.
  4. Speak, either aloud or in your head, the words you would like the person to hear, and visualize him or her smiling in response and perhaps holding out a hand.
  5. Spin the pendulum even faster, so that the color blurs.
  6. When the pendulum reverses direction, blow out the candle, using your own words to send the love and light to the face in the crystal.

Daily OM for May 9 – Using Yourself as a Pendulum

Using Yourself as a Pendulum
Intuitive Guidance from Within

by Madisyn Taylor

Using your body as a pendulum is another tool you can use to access your higher wisdom.

Learning to trust our intuition is something that can connect us with our higher selves. Sometimes it might not seem easy to do this. Our thoughts and minds often get in the way. But by accessing our innermost self, we will find that the information we receive is usually what we truly need at that moment. One of the techniques that allows us to really get in touch with our deepest font of wisdom is using our body as a pendulum. The simple act of letting our physical being lead us in a certain direction can offer us extremely deep insights and help us find the answers we seek.

Many of us may have tried using a pendulum or crystal on a chain as a dousing tool to acquire the information we need to make decisions or even find lost objects. Using our bodies puts us much more closely in tune with our being. The process of using your body as a pendulum is to ask your higher self a question and wait for your body to respond in either a forward-tilting or backward-tilting motion. The first step is to really understand how our higher self communicates with us by centering our bodies, asking ourselves the directions for “yes” and “no,” and noting which way our body moves. For a lot of people a forward motion is “yes,” and your body tilting backward is a “no” answer. It is easier to start with simple questions at first to understand how our higher self communicates with us. As we become more used to the messages we receive and how we process them, we can start asking for more specific things such as what dosage of herbs to take or which foods would best nourish our bodies. Using this technique in the grocery store or when shopping for vitamins and remedies can be extremely helpful.

Since we are always present in our bodies, understanding how we can use our bodies as pendulums is a tool we can use at any given moment in our lives. Letting our bodies tell us what is happening inside of us will in turn help to guide us through not just daily but also major life decisions. The more we allow our bodies to open up and share with us the connection it has with our deeper self, the better able we will be to truly access the knowledge we hold so deeply within.

The pendulum can be used for many things: finding lost objects, discovering hidden treasures,
divining water, communicating with spirits of the dead, diagnosing illness an prescribing medicine…
all these and more. Gypsies use the pendulum quite a lot. One of the uses to which they put it is in
determining whether or not a particular lover is the right one for you.
The pendulum itself should be a ring suspended on a length of red silk thread or ribbon.
Many girls use their mother’s wedding band for the ring. The only other thing you need is a
connection with the one you are wondering about. This can be an article of his or her clothing,
a handkerchief, a watch, ring, or other piece of jewelry, a photograph, or anything similar that has
a direct link with the person.
Simply sit with the object, photograph, or whatever in front of you and hold the pendulum over it.
It doesn’t matter whether or not your elbow rests on the table, but hold the thread so that the ring
is suspended about an inch or so above the object. Allow seven inches of the thread between
your fingers and the ring.
Concentrate your thoughts on the person you are wondering about. Is he/she the right one for you?
Think of all their good qualities, and their bad. Then say:
Av, ml Romani mal,
Pawdel dur chumbas.
Av kitane mansa?
This little verse in Romanes (the Gypsy language) can be roughly translated as
“Come my Gypsy friend, over the hills so far away. Will you come along with me?”
Repeat it, saying it three times in all.
As you say the verse the pendulum will start to swing. If it swings backwards and
forwards, towards you and away from you, then it means “yes,” that person is the
right one for you. But if it swings from side to side, across you, then it means “no,”
they are not right for you. With some people the pendulum may swing in a circle, rather
than backwards and forwards. If it does, then clockwise means “Yes” and
counterclockwise means “no”.

The Pendulum Board

The Pendulum Board

A pendulum board is not necessary to perform tasks of divination, but it does come in handy. You can make your own or purchase a pendulum kit when you’re looking for the right tool for you. If you want to make your own, you simply need a circle with these six directions. This is the most common layout of a pendulum board. As you progress you might decide to make a more elaborate board that includes an alphabet and numbers.
  1. Yes ~ an up and down direction.
  2. No ~ a side to side direction.
  3. Maybe ~ a diagonal direction, from the lower left to upper right corners of the circle.
  4. Don’t Want To Answer ~ a diagonal direction , from the lower right to the upper left corners of the circle.
  5. Probably Yes ~ a clockwise circle.
  6. Probably Not ~ a counter-clockwise circle.
Making Your Own Board

Most pendulums you can purchase come with their own pendulum board. But not all do. If you chose to use a board, you can use a variety of things to make your own board.
You can draw a simple circle on a piece of paper and place the labels in the locations you feel most comfortable with. You can use a photo. You can alter a photo or picture with a graphics package and print it from your computer on photographic paper. You can even use “The Wheel” or “The Fortune” card from your favorite tarot deck.
The key is finding an image that inspires you, that has a circle in the center and you can easily identify the answer layout to.
This image is a good example of how a picture can be used to create a board. It’s a picture that was sent to me as a gift. Using a graphics package, I simply added the labels to make the board. In reality, you don’t have to add the words if you don’t want to. It can make it easier for the client to watch the pendulum as it swings and answers their questions. And it can also provide the new reader with a reminder of how they programmed the pendulum to operate.

Dowsing to Find Dragon Energy

Dowsing to Find Dragon Energy

For dowsing, you can use a pendulum or dowsing rods, neither of which have to be professionally made. A pendulum can be a small weight or crystal suspended on a thread or chain. The pendulum is held suspended by the chain in your power hand while you walk over an area. For some people, the pendulum will swing in a clockwise circle, for others back and forth, when an underground flow of power is crossed. By marking the ground wherever this occurs, you can trace a power line’s underground flow for long distances. Don’t try to walk along over the top of the flow, but rather cross it from the side. Back and forth working will allow you to be aware of any twists and turns the line might take.
Dowsing rods can be made from two coat hangers. Using a pair of wire cutters, cut off the hook and then straighten the remaining wire. Bend this long piece of wire in such a way as to provide short hand-grips and longer right-angle bars. Holding a bend rod loosely in each hand, the dowser walks slowly over an area until the long bars cross. The problem with dowsing in an inhabited area is that you will find every water line there. But it can be productive if you combine dowsing with watching for unusual anomalies in the vegetation growth or lack of plant life altogether. Energy flows have been known to shift position, following underground water or electrical lines.
Discovering such an energy line on your property makes it possible for you to know where to go to access a burst of power when you need it. Other lines may run through city parks or recreation areas, where you will not be trespassing if you go in for a pick-me-up.

Choosing and Working with a Pendulum

A pendulum gives you a physical representation of your natural inner knowing. It consists of a piece of metal, wood, or crystal hanging on a chain or string. A crystal pendulum requires less effort to work with when you start, as crystals magnify energy, which makes tuning into them simpler and their answers more obvious. When you choose your pendulum, don’t think about it too much–simply stand in front of a selection and pick the first one you notice. As with choosing crystals, you need to trust your instincts.
