Calendar of the Sun for March 25th

Calendar of the Sun

Feralia: Day of Purification

Color: White
Element: Air
Altar: On a white cloth put a lit candle, incense, a cup of water, and a bowl of salt.
Offering: Although this day is not a day of total silence, it is a solemn day and talking should be done only when necessary and in quiet tones. Bodies should be thoroughly cleaned during the bathing hour, and then the altar area should be cleaned and purified with all four elements. Each person, upon entering the altar space at the beginning of Sponde should remove their clothing and be naked, and each body should be purified with the four elements and marked with water and salt, at which point they may enrobe again. Chores of the day should concentrate on cleaning and repair.
Daily Meal: Vegan and extremely simple and plain.

Feralia Invocation

Breathe the air into your body
And breathe out again,
And as you breathe out,
Let all grime and corruption
Depart on that breath
(All breathe together for twelve breaths.)
Feel the blood coursing through your body
And imagine it clean
Of anything but what should be there.
Feel the energy coursing through your body
And wash it clean
Of anything that does not belong.
Feel the Earth beneath you,
Remember that She can absorb all
Remember that all rot is her provenance
Draw her energy up into you
And give it back again.

(After this grounding, all breathe together again in a yogic breathing pattern for the next half an hour, after which all will go with water and salt and incense and fire to all rooms in the house and cleanse them. Great care should be taken for the rest of the day not to disturb the energy of the freshly cleaned house.)

Charming Glamory {Chaste Moon}

Charming Glamory

 {Chaste Moon}

Glamory is all about the image you present to the world. In the faery realm, glamory is the source of magick that faeries use to shape shift. Changing their appearance at will, for example from a gorgeous faery queen to a frightening, black cat, faeries can move through worlds undetected, and when discovered, they can charm their way out of a situation.

Create your own glamory and make yourself more faery-like  and charming. At midnight, think about how you project your image into your world. Exactly what persona and appearance are you presenting to those around you? Notice how you act in different situations. As you notice the many qualities about yourself, write them down in your journal.

Now that you are becoming more aware of your glamory, it’s time to become charming. These are five things you can practice to do just that.

  1. Smile when you are with people.
  2. Make eye contact when you meet and talk with people.
  3. Stay present and in the moment.
  4. Relax and enjoy yourself.
  5. Think, act, and be as confident as possible.

Practice these things all the time, and become aware when you do the. Also, notice how people respond to you whenever you do things. The more you practice tailoring your glamory into the cloak you desire, the more you will attract the people and experiences in your life that you really want. Accordingly, you life will improve as you become more and more adept at applying your charming glamor every night and every day.

SPELL BINDER

SPELL BINDER
This is best used at the end of a spoken or written spell.
This adds a certain boost to the releasing of energy.
It also works best if you are wearing a Pentagram you have attuned to yourself.
Speak these word with all the fibers of your body while releasing the spell’s energy:
By the Pentagram I wear,
Water, Fire, Earth, and Air,
Ruled by Spirit as All should be
As I speak
So Mote It Be!

Binding Spell for the Waning Moon

Binding Spell

Do on a waning moon.
On a sheet of paper, write the name of the person who you wish to bind. Also write down some negative behaviors that you would like to change positive. Roll the paper
and wrap with black ribbon, set paper on fire, and place in a fireproof bowl. Chant this until completely burned:
“As this paper chars and burns, all these behaviors soon will turn.”
Dump the ash in the water. Visualize it glow with power of peace. Concentrate on your intent. Take the water and ash to a north tree at your home, and pour water & ash
around the base while chanting three times:
“Sink this into mother earth, give love and understanding birth.”
Visualize how things will be different.
“So mote it be!”

A Book Binding Ritual

In natural magic, knots and binding are ruled by the element of Earth.    A
knot or binding represent both intangible goals (such as the return of
loaned property) and they also absorb personal power.  This ritual isn’t
intended to force or coerce another to return the book, it affects the book,
not the person the book is being loaned to.

Take the book, and hold it between your palms, sending personal energy into
it.

By hill and wind,
By flame and brook,
By shining moon and sea;
I place a bind
Upon this book
That it will return to me.
Wrap one foot of plain white cotton string around the book, securing it with
a knot.  Make sure the knot is tight, but not so tight that you cannot slip
the string from the book.  As you make the knot, visualize the book
returning to you, again chanting:

By hill and wind,
By flame and brook,
By shining moon and sea;
I place a bind
Upon this book
That it will return to me.

Slip off the knotted cord, and put it in a secret place or spell box.  As
you actually loan the book, again repeat the chant (silently) while
visualizing its return.  Once the book has been returned, untie the cord.
It is done.

TO GIVE SOMEONE A DREAM

TO GIVE SOMEONE A DREAM

You need: — A dish of earth a cup or cauldron of water a candle
(check color correspondences for whatever kind of dream you will be sending)
and some incense (any kind, this is just to symbolize air).
If you have an altar it should go in the middle of wherever you are placing these objects.
Put the earth to the North the incense to the East the fire to the South and the water to the West.
Then sit in the middle by your altar or just in the middle.
Visualize the dream you wish to give and after you’re done visualizing say this:
“Lord and Lady I ask of thee
Give me the ability to send forth this dream
Across the Earth or water’s bound
Whether he/she be in the sky or on the ground
By the powers of fire to let it shine bright
By the powers of earth and air to send it tonight
By the powers of water to sweep within dream’s door
And by the powers of 3 shall _____ remember it evermore
Sleep in the knowledge the dream will be projected to the person you have visualized.
Be sure to go through every detail of what you wish to send.

Ring Divination {Chaste Moon Spell}

Ring Divination

{Chaste Moon Spell}

This divination method is a variation of dactylomancy, which is an ancient form of divination that used rings. One method places gold or silver rings on the fingernails in ways that reflect the conjunctions of the planets. Another method involves using a wedding ring by either hanging it on a string like a pendulum or casting it in a bowl of water where the bottom has been mapped out so that where the ring lands determines its meaning in term of the divination.

You will need a ring that you wear around your finger for the spell. As you are getting ready to go to sleep, determine the aspect of your life that you want to address in the moon ring divination. It can either be a specific question or an area where you need insights as to what’s happening.

Drifting to sleep, twist the ring clockwise on your finger nine times while saying:

Ring around the moon

Circling stars through the sky

I’ll be dreaming soon

Asking this question why (ask your question).

Imagine your ring twirling around a giant image of the moon floating high in the sky. As the ring revolves around and around, you imagine stars within the ring sparkling like the off and on twinkle of lights that are continually changing color and intensity. Peer deep within the milky white orb of the moon, and begin your journey toward illuminating this aspect of your life. Write down all the impressions you receive.

Your Lunar LoveScopes for the Weekend of March 23 -25

Weekend Love: Lunar Love

by Jeff Jawer

All Fired Up

March 23 – 25

Friday is fired up by the frisky Aries Moon, stimulating interest in new places and faces. Taking risks by being more direct about feelings may rub some folks the wrong way, but it’s admirable to adopt such an honest approach to relationships. Eliminating games and guesswork about what you want clears away misconceptions and can take a partnership in a fresh direction or open the door to someone new.

Restlessness continues on Saturday as the impatience of the Aries Moon is kicked up by a solar conjunction to rebellious Uranus. A strong drive for independence and innovation is best met by giving everyone plenty of space. Any attempt to control people is likely to be met by resistance, so keeping things loose is a good way to keep the peace. Sudden shifts of mood are also possible, which can rattle a relationship or inspire an instant attraction to someone unusual.

Sunday should be calmer and quieter as the earthy Taurus Moon slows the pace and engages the senses. A big breakfast can be a yummy way to start the day, especially if you’re not in a hurry to go anywhere. Lounging around the house or relaxing in a beautiful natural setting opens hearts to life’s simple pleasures.

Shielding for Beginners

Shielding for Beginners

A psychic shield is a non-material substance/force/power with which you surround yourself for protection. Many types of force can be called into play in its construction, any many forms can be used, all at your discretion. It’s important that a friend, instructor or adept not do this for you; your shield will be with you permanently and you need to have the intimate connection that creating your own provides.

Why make a shield? The best reason is for protection against psychic flak of all kinds, especially important when you are first starting down the Path, and aren’t yet well-versed in defensive measures. Its protection from mind-games and psychic vampires and a good shield helps you to separate mundane flak from psychic flak. It exercises the faculties of self-reliance and visualization. All told, it’s one of the most essential tools of the working witch.

What do I need to know about shields? Your shield is your basic piece of protection/comfort/defense. It is a permanent part of you, and something like wearing a Circle like a second skin. It should be flexible and semi-permeable, moving and growing with you, and breathing with your energy usage. Be aware that what you visualize when you start out is what will be there, but that the shield will probably change of its own accord to keep up with your changing capabilities and needs.

Calendar of the Sun
22 Hrethemonath

Quinquatria Day IV
Ostara

Colors: Pale blue, yellow, spring green
Element: Earth
Altar: Upon a cloth of Ostara colors, place a rainstick, a bowl of eggs, a great bowl of water filled with stones, a yellow candle, incense of violets, and a fan made in the shape of a bird’s wing. Add also flats of earth and a bowl of seeds. Set up a vase of branches cut from a tree and allowed to sprout green in warm water. Hang hollowed eggs marked with appropriate symbols from the tree. Some should be half golden and half black.
Offerings: Plant something. Introduce the joy of planting and working with gardens to the underprivileged.
Daily Meal: Eggs. Poultry. Rabbit.

Ritual Note: Like all the eight high holidays, this day should ideally be spent not enclosed and isolated, but in common with the larger pagan community. This can be done a number of ways, including spending the day elsewhere, at the Brigid’s Day ritual of another group or tradition, or by inviting in those pagans who would otherwise not be able to attend a ritual. Either way, the eight holidays should be a time of remembering the place of the house in the greater community. If the choice is made to go elsewhere, then no liturgy is needed for the day. If the choice is made to bring the greater community into the lesser one, the following ritual can be used:

(First four who have been chosen to do the work of the ritual cast circle with fan, candle, rainstick, and green branch.)

East:
O Mercury, rider of the wind,
Lithe of body and supple of tongue,
Blow a breath of freedom
Into our weary minds!
Spirits of the Air,
Caress us clean!

South:
O Bast, cat dancer in the fire,
Curious one with the flashing eyes,
Quick to pounce and quick to laugh,
Renew us with your fire!
Spirits of the Flame,
Awaken us!

West:
O Lorelei of the Sea
Mermaid singing with your siren song
Send us playful salt spray
And the rain of your laughter!
Spirits of the West,
Wash away the winter sorrows!

North:
Kore, earth Maiden,
Springtime’s goddess,
Returning yet again
From darkness into light,
May green arise in your footsteps
And flowers blossom from your touch!
Spirits of the North,
Welcome to Spring!

Ostara Invocation (Call And Response):

Call: Hail the coming of Spring!
Response: Hail the day of the eastern wind!
C: Tonight Day is equal to Night.
R: Today Night is equal to Day.
C: Today all things are in balance.
R: Balanced on the blade of a knife!
C: Balanced on the blade of Thought.
R: Balanced on the blade of Wind.
C: As the winds rise in the east,
R: As the sun rises in the east,
C: As dawn gives new beginnings,
R: At the dawning of the year,
C: We lift our arms to the eastern sky,
R: We lift our spirits to the coming of Spring,
C: And may the rain wash us clean!
R: May all things be cleansed!
C: May all things begin anew!
R: May we rise in hope and be transformed!
C: May we rise like the grass springing forth from the soil!
R: May we unfurl like every new leaf!
C: Arise, and sing for joy!

Ostara Chant

Bass descant:

Breath warms thee
Hands prepare thee
Hope sows thee
Sun awaken thee

May the seeds we plant spring forth and grow
May we reap our dreams from what we sow,
And our transformation has begun,
We are rising upwards toward the sun
We are rising upwards toward the sun
We are rising upwards toward the sun
We are rising upwards toward the sun
We are rising upwards toward the sun.

Soprano melody:

(We will) Break the surface of the Earth,
Like the Mother’s flesh gives maiden’s birth,
Like the heaving mountains rise and fall,
Like the buried hope within us all,
Like the greening tendril skyward springs,
Like the birds return on joyous wings,
Like our every breath of eastern wind,
We will see the dawning year begin,
And the seed of sorrow planted deep
Shall awaken from its bitter sleep,
And our transformation has begun,
We are rising upwards toward the sun….

Breath warms thee
Hands prepare thee
Hope sows thee
Sun awaken thee

All together:

We are rising upwards toward the sun
We are rising upwards toward the sun
Alive
Alive
Alive…..

Pagan Book of Hours

From Ostara to Beltane

From Ostara to Beltane

The advent of Spring marks the turning of the year, when hours of daylight begin to outnumber the hours of darkness again. New growth emerges around us and we experience renewed energy and hope, while fertility becomes the focus of the animal and human world and is also seen in the reawakening of the Earth and the Flora it sustains. Because the Sun returns to our lives at the Spring Equinox, it is associated with the color yellow.

The Green Life versus The Silver Life

The Green Life versus The Silver Life

Author: Luthien

The ol’ Witch in the woods had a couple of beeswax candles, the Sun, Moon and stars and knowledge of the uses of herbs in her area to use in her practice. The modern Witch has the world at their fingertips at the click of a mouse button. Were things better in her time, without the cacophony of engine noise, the persistent hum of computers, and mobile phone signals that clog up the air? Or are we far better off out of the dark ages, living comfortable lifestyles without constant fear of persecution and with worldwide sharing of information?

I’ve always been a bit of a sci-fi geek, always fascinated with modern technology. I’m not a Mathematician or a Scientist – I’m a writer, and I spent my teen-hood making stories from ideas based upon Space exploration and travel. Most of the fiction I’ve ever written involves futuristic civilizations living in artificial cities built in Space, the ideas of which were researched through a lifelong fascination of ‘what’s out there’, and ‘where mankind will go with it all’. I’ve also always been a sucker for post- apocalyptic dramas and films; there’s nothing quite like the thrill of the sight of well- known cities like New York being mass flooded and frozen over as in The Day after Tomorrow, or deserted and left to nature to take over like in I am Legend, or even taken over by vicious aliens as in The War of the Worlds. In fact, any fiction where the planet freezes over or burns to a crisp or explodes will generally have me on the edge of my seat.

Like any young person, I wouldn’t be without my laptop, mobile and iPod, these things which make our day to day lives so much quicker, easier and more enjoyable. Find me a housewife who’d be without her prize washing machine or a businessman who’d function for a day without his Blackberry or iPhone. I’ve also always had a thrill for travel, particularly to far- flung, exotic places. It’s soggy and grey most of the year where I live, and like many Brits I’m a bit of a sun- seeker. How easy it is just to bulldoze normal life to one side, hop on a cheap flight and be transported into a sunnier, warmer, care- free world.

So you can see where we hit the snag.

Does the slow- paced, Earth- reverence lifestyle of Paganism not present the exact opposite sort of mentality? Pagans live in the here and now, grounded in the present, not worrying frantically about next week or mulling endlessly over a past loss or failure. The majority of us are focused mainly on environmental issues. (Would you let your backyard turn into a mini landfill site?) This is the reason so many Pagans pour so much effort into protecting the environment, everyone’s back yard, and many enjoy nothing more than a walk through sylvan parks, forests and alongside tinkling streams rather than in the pristine, perfectly geometric stone and metal cities of my imagination.

Air travel is of-course a big no-no, so that’s potentially struck off my ‘How to be a Perfect Pagan’ list, being the largest producer of Co2 as forms of transport go. Pagans who travel abroad often attempt to use trains or ferries unless no such alternative is available or practical for the journey being made. If all else fails, though, I’m told that planting a tree will cancel out the Carbon Dioxide produced by a medium- haul flight.

All the silver shiny things that make up our day to day lives, the computers that make us stay- indoorsy robots and the mobile phones that distract us for hours and hours on end from our natural surroundings, those things that make our lives easier and more enjoyable on the surface, but in the long term cause fatigue, depression and stress due to our over- busy lives and lack of communication with Earth’s energies – how on Earth do we fit it into a modern Pagan lifestyle?

After all Pagans fulfill a variety of jobs and careers – there are Pagan IT technicians, plumbers, teachers, actors, writers… we wouldn’t be able to live in this age without technology. The answer is compromise, to combine the two. We can’t progress without embracing modern technology. Without the wonders of the Internet this article wouldn’t be reaching you. And ‘Progress’, when used to justify annihilating thousands of acres of rainforest, to deplete the world’s natural resources and to allow alarmingly and unnaturally rapid shift in the Earth’s climate, really makes me cringe.

It needn’t be like this. It’s industrial- age thinking. Progress as a species to me means developing sustainable ways of generating energy and living, while developing our technology without compromising our ozone layer or environment. This is of course easier said than done, but for me part of being a witch is always asking questions, always exploring new ideas and better and more eco- friendly ways of doing things.

The term ‘Techno-Pagan’ is becoming more and more widespread, to describe those who would use the Internet to network with other Pagans and bring together people and ideas. According to Wikipedia, the Techno-Pagans are also those who would use modern –day devices in ritual, such as a ‘disk of Shadows’ instead of a traditional book, using an oven for a hearth and a laser pointer instead of a wand. Some will go as far as to say that electrical devices have a soul or energy field of their own, and their use in ritual helps to bring together the spiritual and physical worlds. I will use music from my laptop to use in meditation, but generally speaking I like to keep the two separate.

There’s something magical about holding a book in your hands filled with carefully written- out pages, and using altar tools that you made yourself of things you found out in the park or in the garden. Though I’m sure many of us have the Internet to thank for the roots or development of our magickal education, or for networking with and maintaining contact with many more Pagans than otherwise would have crossed our paths.

But beside all this we can still make time to be one to one with nature, if we can only pause our hectic lifestyles for a brief time and take in the serenity of the Earth’s healing energies. I’m a great admirer of the Pagan author Starhawk, and her novel The Fifth Sacred Thing tells of a futuristic world where a bleak, totalitarian regime attempts relentlessly to invade a small green pocket of land where witches fight with their lives to protect diversity, freedom and the greenery of the planet. Here she combines my two favorite genres, and in the novel these two extremes are set to clash horribly. This isn’t the way it will be in my own life, though; getting the right balance is imperative to our wellbeing, and if we can reach for the silvery stars while keeping rooted in the green Earth, we will make great tracks indeed in our lives and in the lives of others.

Elder’s Meditation of the Day – March 21

“The manner with which we walk through life is each man’s most important responsibility, and we should remember this with every new sunrise.”

–Thomas Yellowtail, CROW

Every spiritual person should carry a vision of God’s will in every area of their life. One day at a time, each morning at sunrise, we should spend time praying to the Creator. We should say something like, my Creator, this morning I ask you to show me, in terms I can understand, what you have or me to do. By doing this daily, over time, we will develop an unquestionable vision. Each person is responsible for taking the time to do this. It will bring great joy and peace of mind to those warriors who do.

My Creator, give me the vision, today, of what you want me to do.

Aurora Over Iceland
Image Credit & Copyright: Daniel Lopez (El Cielo de Canarias)

Explanation: If you see a sky like this — photograph it. Three nights ago in Iceland, an adventurous photographer (pictured) chanced across a sky full of aurora and did just that. Afterwards, by stitching together five smaller photographs, the entire aurora-lit sky was recreated in this 180-degree panorama taken from Vatnajökull glacier. Auroras are sparked by energetic particles from the Sun impacting the magnetic environment around the Earth. Resultant energetic particles such as electrons and protons rain down near the Earth’s poles and impact the air. The impacted air molecules obtain excited electrons, and when electrons in oxygen molecules fall back to their ground state, they emit green light. Auroras are known to have many shapes and colors.

Your Daily Cosmic Calendar for March 21

Every so often a dark-of-the-moon cycle (when the New Moon is on the verge of happening) crosses swords with a lengthy void-of-course lunar time-period. That fairly rare cosmic energy-field is in effect at 1:40AM PDT when the Moon in Pisces becomes void and this condition lasts over 24 hours until 2:58AM PDT tomorrow when the Moon enters Aries. The bottom line is that while several celestial alignments are vying for supremacy today, it is wise to complete old business on a high note and not push your personal agenda to make things happen your way. Here’s a list of the key aspects going on today as Mercury makes a frictional, 45-degree tie to Venus (1:18AM PDT), the Moon forms a supportive, 60-degree link to Venus (1:40AM PDT), Ceres makes an abrasive, 135-degree contact with Mars (3:02AM PDT), Mercury makes a subtle, 30-degree rapport with Neptune (8:11AM PDT), the Moon parallels Uranus (10:12AM PDT), the Sun and Mercury form an important Inferior Conjunction or Earth, Mercury and Sun line-up at 2 degrees of Aries (12:22PM PDT), the Sun makes a subtle, 30-degree tie to Neptune (4:25PM PDT), Juno squares Mars (6:35PM PDT), and the Moon parallels Ceres (7:57PM PDT) and Mercury (10:30PM PDT). Yikes! Ten sky patterns are in this list and the Earth, Mercury and Sun line-up in the solar system is no slouch. Cosmic seed-ideas are seeking to enter curious and open human minds that can take hold of them and translate them into winning formulas for earthly success in a wide variety of realms of knowledge, business and professional work. However, because of the all-consuming void lunar cycle, matched up with the dark-of-the-moon vibes, some cautionary behavior is recommended.

“You have wandered away from your teachings. You must concentrate on your spiritual teachings…Don’t be sidetracked.”

–Henry Quick Bear, LAKOTA

Why are the Elders always telling us to know The culture and listen to the teachings? When We go off track, why do the Elders say, return to the teachings? The teachings tell us how to live in harmony with the Laws and principles of the Great Spirit. Living means Life – a good life, a happy life. Many of us have grown up without the teachings and the culture, that is why we don’t know how to live. To improve on relationships, to treat our children with honor and to respect our Elders, we need to live by the old teachings again.

Great Spirit, today, show me how to live.

Garden Blessing for Ostara

Garden Blessing for Ostara

By Patti Wigington

Say a blessing over your garden as you prepare it for spring.

The earth is cool and dark,
and far below, new life begins.
May the soil be blessed with fertility and abundance,
with rains of life-giving water,
with the heat of the sun,
with the energy of the raw earth.
May the soil be blessed
as the womb of the land becomes full and fruitful
to bring forth the garden anew.
