Today’s Tarot Card for January 27th – The Lovers

The Lovers

Although it has taken on a strictly romantic revision of meaning in some modern decks, traditionally the Lovers card of Tarot reflected the challenges of choosing a partner. At a crossroads, one cannot take both paths. The images on this card in different decks have varied more than most, because we have had so many ways of looking at sex and relationships across cultures and centuries.

Classically, the energy of this card reminded us of the real challenges posed by romantic relationships, with the protagonist often shown in the act of making an either-or choice. To partake of a higher ideal often requires sacrificing the lesser option. The path of pleasure eventually leads to distraction from spiritual growth. The gratification of the personality eventually gives way to a call from spirit as the soul matures.

Modern decks tend to portray the feeling of romantic love with this card, showing Adam and Eve at the gates of Eden when everything was still perfect. This interpretation portrays humanity before the Fall, and can be thought to imply a different sort of choice — the choice of evolution over perfection, or the choice of personal growth through relationship — instead of a fantasy where everything falls into place perfectly and is taken care of without effort.

Today’s Tarot Card for Friday, Jan. 24th is The Empress

The Empress

Traditionally entitled “Empress,” this major arcana or “trump” card portrays the energy of the Great Mother. She is Nature, around us but also within us, the ever-unfolding Source of life-giving power. She is often pictured as a pre-Christian Goddess, as the one whom the High Priestess is channeling down to earth for the rest of us.

In medieval Europe, the Empress card was painted to represent whatever Queen currently ruled the land, probably to satisfy the Inquisitors. But the scholars of the Renaissance and beyond had no doubt of her true identity, although she could not be fully revealed on Tarot cards as the “woman clothed with the sun” until after the French Revolution.

This supreme archetype of femininity also symbolizes fertility. It is She who provides us nourishment and security. She is also sometimes seen as delighting us with flowers and fruit. A potentially terrifying aspect of this archetype manifests itself whenever karmic mood swings wipe out our plans, like a storm that has come upon us. Whatever happens, the Empress is the Source of our Embodiment and of Natural Law. She might even be called “the Great Recycler.”

Today’s Tarot Card for January 22nd is The Magician

The Magician

Wednesday, Jan 22nd, 2014

Traditionally, the Magus is one who can demonstrate hands-on magic — as in healing, transformative rituals, alchemical transmutations, charging of talismans and the like. A modern Magus is any person who completes the circuit between heaven and Earth, one who seeks to bring forth the divine ‘gold’ within her or himself.

At the birth of Tarot, even a gifted healer who was not an ordained clergyman was considered to be in league with the Devil! For obvious reasons, the line between fooling the eye with sleight of hand, and charging the world with magical will was not clearly differentiated in the early Tarot cards.

Waite’s image of the Magus as the solitary ritualist communing with the spirits of the elements — with its formal arrangement of symbols and postures — is a token of the freedom we have in modern times to declare our spiritual politics without fear of reprisal. The older cards were never so explicit about what the Magus was doing. It’s best to keep your imagination open with this card. Visualize yourself manifesting something unique, guided by evolutionary forces that emerge spontaneously from within your soul.

2014 Numerology Predictions

2014 Numerology Predictions

Reaching our limits

Hans Decoz   Hans Decoz on the topics of numerology, horoscopes, 2014

2014 is the year when we become aware — aware of the destructive nature and the inherent danger that exist in a world of extremes. We will begin to see a trend this year, through all areas of human life, to search for ways to bring us together. There will be people in power who change overnight, and institutions that will reconsider their ideologies, giving us hope … but we will also see the negative forces become more desperate and violent.

The number 7 rules the year 2014 — it is a 7 Universal Year, because 2 + 0 + 1 + 4 = 7. The number 7 is analytical and self-examining. It starts a turnaround as, even the mind, as cold as it is, recognizes that duality doesn’t benefit anyone.

But other numbers play a role too… In the chart below, which breaks down the year 2014, the numbers in the upper half show the positive influences of this 7 Universal Year, which are found by continuously adding the digits in a pyramid-like system. The numbers in the lower half show the negative influences, and are the result of subtracting. They are therefore mirrors of each other. The strongest relationship any one number in this chart has, is with its mirrored partner.

The 9 at the top represents compassion and empathy, while the negative influence of its mirrored partner, the 1 at the bottom, reflects egotism and cruelty. The contrast is obvious and appropriate. The 3 and the 6 in the upper half tell us that art and communication (3), and a deepening sense of responsibility (6) will be the primary channels through which the energy of the 9 flows in 2014, while their mirrored partners, the hostile 1 and the sly 2, oppose them. The 5 represents a big change or shocking and unexpected event around October or November of 2014, caused in large part by miscommunication (the 3 below it).

A matter of extremes

Since the year 2008 — the first year of this current nine-year epicycle that runs through 2016 — we’ve been experiencing an extreme increase in polarization. This schism affects the human race across the globe. Whether political, social, economic, environmental, or religious, our positions tend to be more and more black and white. Gray, the color of compromise, is no longer in-vogue.

Polarization is the quintessence of a climaxing force delivered to us precisely on schedule by this nine-year cycle. It’s a natural, if difficult and painful, part of our evolution. As a species, we are young and immature, given to rebel and push the envelope. We have created long-term instability in our environment, economy, and social structure because we can’t see beyond the desire for instant and superficial satisfaction.

Extremes continue to rule during this nine-year cycle, after which we enter a new nine-year cycle that is dominated by information. The 2017 – 2026 epicycle will see the end of many centuries of long-held secrets. No one will be able to hide then, no institution will be able to hold on to its secrets. Light will shine on everything, and symbolize the most dramatic change in history.

Your Tarot Card for January 21 is The Fool

The Fool

Tuesday, Jan 21st, 2014

Pamela Coleman-Smith’s artful rendition of an “innocent Fool” archetype (Rider-Waite deck) is often used to represent Tarot in general. Early classical versions of the Fool card, however, portray quite a different character — a person driven by base needs and urges, who has fallen into a state of poverty and deprivation.

In some instances, he is made out to be a carnival entertainer or a huckster. In others, he is portrayed as decrepit and vulnerable — as the cumulative result of his delusions and failures. Not until the 20th century do you see the popular Rider-Waite image of the Fool arise — that of an innocent Soul before its Fall into Matter, as yet untainted by contact with society and all its ills.

Modern decks usually borrow from the Rider-Waite imagery. Most Fool cards copy the bucolic mountainside scene, the butterfly, the potential misplaced step that will send the Fool tumbling into the unknown. Don’t forget, however, that the earlier versions of this card represented already-fallen humanity, over-identified with the material plane of existence, and beginning a pilgrimage towards self-knowledge, and eventually, wisdom. The Fool reminds us to recognize the path of personal development within ourselves — and the stage upon that path where we find ourselves — in order to energize our movement toward deeper self-realization.

Happy Birthday, Aquarius!

Happy Birthday, Aquarius!

Kick up your heels with the worldly Water-bearer

Maria DeSimone   Maria DeSimone on the topics of birthdays, astrology, aquarius

Although you’re a social sign, Aquarius, you’re not the type who enjoys being the center of attention. As a result, on your birthday you might celebrate casually with a group of friends, but you’d feel just as comfortable working the night at your favorite soup kitchen or on your latest humanitarian cause. You are definitely the altruistic type! As long as your personal space is respected, you’ll go out of your way to help mankind.

The most unique party in town

While it’s true that you have your pulse on the most visionary of concepts, you also have the reputation for being offbeat — even weird — in your approach to life. The good news is that you’re an incredibly strong-willed individual. But at the same time, you might be uncompromising and rebellious — especially when you sense any threat to your personal freedom. When you need breathing room and ask someone to give you space, you tend to mean it … even if it’s on your birthday!

Some may accuse you of being cold or detached … and at times this might be the case. If this happens, however, it’s usually because you prefer not to reveal yourself until you’ve decided someone is worthy of something more than a superficial alliance. Once you’ve made that judgment, you’ll be a loyal friend through thick and thin. If your pals or relatives are planning a special birthday surprise for you, you may not get all gushy and sentimental about it, but that doesn’t mean their gesture hasn’t affected you. You may not wear your heart on your sleeve, but you certainly have feelings that run deep. True, you might be a little strange sometimes, but you’re also always authentic.

A Question for Pessomancy

A Question for Pessomancy

Wolf Moon
Pessomancy is a form of divination that uses seeds or pebbles. Traditionally the diviner throws the seeds, then from  their pattern interprets their meaning.
To perform this spell, you will need a white candle, a blank piece of paper with a line drawn down the middle, and nine  bean seeds or nine pebbles.
Light the candle while dedicating it to the Goddess. Place the candle in a holder, and put it on your altar. Lay the  paper down in front of it. The line down the middle of the paper should line up with the candle. Say the following:
Goddess of light
Let my future shine bright!
Think about the question, and as you do, drop the seeds or pebbles on the line drawn on the paper. The seeds and pebbles  that fall on the left side are favorable to the outcome of the question, whereas those seeds and stones that fall on the right side point to things not  working out. The number of seeds and stones that fall on either side of the line indicate whether or not the overcome will be positive or negative. When you  are done, allow the candle to burn out completely.

Today’s Tarot Card for Jan. 15 The Devil

The Devil

Wednesday, Jan 15th, 2014

What has traditionally been known as the Devil card expresses the realm of the Taboo, the culturally rejected wildness and undigested shadow side that each of us carries in our subconscious. This shadow is actually at the core of our being, which we cannot get rid of and will never succeed in taming. From its earliest versions, which portrayed a vampire-demon, this card evoked the Church-fueled fear that a person could “lose their soul” to wild and passionate forces.

The image which emerged in the mid-1700’s gives us a more sophisticated rendition — that of the “scapegoated Goddess,” whose esoteric name is Baphomet. Volcanic reserves of passion and primal desire empower her efforts to overcome the pressure of stereotyped roles and experience true freedom of soul. Tavaglione’s highly evolved image (Stella deck) portrays the magical formula for harnessing and transmuting primal and obsessive emotions into transformative energies. As a part of the Gnostic message of Tarot, this fearsome passion and power must be reintegrated into the personality, to fuel the soul’s passage from mortal to immortal.

Lamp Scrying

Lamp Scrying

History

Both the Egyptians and Babylonians scryed by means of an oil lamp. The lamp consisted of a stone which was shaped as a low open dish with a strip of white linen coiled in the oil that had an end which hung over the side of the dish. The Egyptians used clear oil made from oasis palm plants. They believed that the clearer the oil, the better the results.  This is in essence, candle or flame scrying, watching the flame, which can play tricks on your eyes in a dark room.

Ritual Lamp Scrying Techniques

Place your lamp on a table.  Sit on the west side facing east across the lamp.

Sunday : Sol (Ra)

Monday : Luna

Tuesday : Mars

Wednesday : Mercury

Thursday : Jupiter

Friday : Venus

Saturday : Saturn

Using the name of the God of that day, chant a suitable invocation toward the flame – in a soft voice – repeating several times. Your mantra may be as simple as calling the God’s name.  Focus on the flame. You may see or sense shadows off to one side (peripheral vision). Telepathically ask a question. You may hear voices or see images. Flames create illusion. This exercise is not for those with emotional problems.

Egyptian Dream Scrying

Egyptian Dream Scrying

Ancient Egyptians believed in the power of dreams to bring messages from their many gods. Their methods of dream scrying go back over 5000 years and were recorded in their ancient texts and on hieroglyphic writings.  Some of their techniques were later used by other ancient civilizations, as in ancient Greece thousands of years ago.

Ritual Dream Scrying Techniques

On the day you scry – find a place of solitude and remain alone.

Do not consume alcohol, eat for 4 hours before your begin, or engage in sexual activities.

Take a warm relaxing bath then anoint your temples with olive oil. You will need an oil lamp as used with lamp scrying.

On a short narrow strip of white linen write the name of the Egyptian God and the purpose for the dream scrying. Twist the linen strip into a wick and insert into the oil of the lamp. Place the lamp on a table beside your bed. Using the ink draw the image of the dream God upon your left palm.

Light your lamp. Kneel before the lamp. Invocation:

Concentrating on the image on your left hand recite the following invocation :
“Thoth, (use name of desired god) I invoke, blessed power of dreams divine, Angel of future fates, swift wings are thine, Great source of oracles to human kind, When stealing soft, and whispering to the mind, Through sleep’s sweet silence and the gloom of night, Thy power awake the sight, To silent souls the will of heaven relates, And silently reveals their future fates.”

Concentrate on your question. Around your left hand wrap a piece of black linen about four inches wide and about thirty inches long. The black cloth is called the black eye of Isis. – the Magic of Isis – or Black Isis.

Blow out the lamp’s flame. Clear your mind and go to sleep.

Have a tape recorder or pen and paper beside your bed so that when you awaken you may record your dreams while still fresh in your mind.

You will find that the dream will come to you in a voice that is clear and powerful rather than in dream images. Sometimes the messages are in symbols – cryptic forms. Take your time in deciphering the messages you have received. You may want to use a dream dictionary to interpret messages given, if possible.  They are often archetypes from your subconscious mind, perhaps from an Egyptian lifetime.
