Peaceful Home Spell

Peaceful Home Spell

This spell is very good if there is a lot of turmoil or stress in the household.
Do the following spell, and while doing so, remember to focus on your intent for a peaceful household.

Sew a small pouch of lavender cloth.
Place a small trinket in the pouch for each member of your household.

Add to this a pinch each of lavender, rose and chamomile, before placing each pinch in the
pouch, remember to hold it for a moment and REALLY focus, finally, add a small amethyst.

Now, anoint a lavender or pink candle with peace oil and then light it.
Sit in front of the candle and hold the pouch in your hands and whisper the following chant
over it softly 3 times:

“Blessed Goddess, most gentle one, calm my home for me.
Relieve all tension, send it far, so from stress we shall be free.
Touch my family with peace and calm, and the sweetest softest bliss,
Bless my home, Great Gentle Goddess, with your calming kiss.”

Set the pouch with the candle. Allow the candle to burn down completely.
Hang the pouch in your home, preferably in the room where everyone gathers the most.
Whenever tension seems to build, repeat the above chant 3 times and envision peace
and tranquility radiating from the pouch and The Goddess.

Peace Ritual

Peace Ritual

Choose candle colors that represent the things you seek peace for

“From out of the dark and into the light
A circular mark, a candle burns bright.
I look towards the sky…my song do I sing.
Spirits soar high and gifts do I bring.
I offer my all! My mind, I then clear
Hearken my call! I feel you are near!
Candle burns higher; my spirits set free!
Hotter than fire, this magic will be!
Let magic come ’round, from under the ground,
To form with my sound and then, to be bound!
Around me I feel the magic so real,
Before you I kneel.. the spell I now seal!
Let all hatred CEASE! And let there be PEACE!
These words that I say, with magick AWAY!
This spell that I send is now at an end.
Let the magick I’ve laid, go forth and not fade!
SO MOTE IT BE!”

Feng Shui Tip for September 12 – 'School Year Clutter'

By now, you should be starting to nip that new school year clutter right in the bud. Start like this: Keep all school books in a single space per student. Put all the things needed for work into another specific space. Donate any books that don’t fit into your current lifestyle. And except for the most recent issues, recycle all magazines, catalogs and circulars. Even get rid of the articles that you’ve been meaning to clip. Trust your Higher Power to always provide you with the information you really need to live your luckiest life. Once the clutter is cleared, feel your incredible lightness of being, and then enjoy your Ahhhhh-Ha moment!

Today's Tarot Card for Sept. 12th is The Devil

The Devil

Thursday, Sep 12th, 2013

What has traditionally been known as the Devil card expresses the realm of the Taboo, the culturally rejected wildness and undigested shadow side that each of us carries in our subconscious. This shadow is actually at the core of our being, which we cannot get rid of and will never succeed in taming. From its earliest versions, which portrayed a vampire-demon, this card evoked the Church-fueled fear that a person could “lose their soul” to wild and passionate forces.

The image which emerged in the mid-1700’s gives us a more sophisticated rendition — that of the “scapegoated Goddess,” whose esoteric name is Baphomet. Volcanic reserves of passion and primal desire empower her efforts to overcome the pressure of stereotyped roles and experience true freedom of soul. Tavaglione’s highly evolved image (Stella deck) portrays the magical formula for harnessing and transmuting primal and obsessive emotions into transformative energies. As a part of the Gnostic message of Tarot, this fearsome passion and power must be reintegrated into the personality, to fuel the soul’s passage from mortal to immortal.

Daily Horoscopes for Thursday, September 12

Although we can see off into the distance today, it’s a struggle to balance our far-sightedness with our ability to focus on the current details. The globe-trotting Sagittarius Moon expands our horizons, enabling us to visualize an upcoming great adventure. However, the Moon’s dynamic square to the detail-oriented Virgo Sun heightens the conflicts that could teach us a lesson. Exploring beneath the surface may be enough to prevent a meltdown

Aries Horoscope

(Mar 21 – Apr 19)

It’s surprising how quickly and easily a complex situation can resolve into a much simpler one. You might think that you’re out of the woods, but don’t fool yourself into believing you’re home free. Your current relief may largely result from the improving circumstances, but some denial could also contribute to your positive state of mind. Remember, avoiding an awkward issue feels good for a while, but it’s not the same thing as really fixing a problem

Taurus Horoscope

(Apr 20 – May 20)

Normally, you assume that you understand what’s going on because you instinctively trust your senses. But it’s difficult to settle down today because somehow you know more than you actually perceive. Logically, you can convince yourself not to take a leap of faith, but in your heart you still believe your intuition. Ultimately, you will feel more empowered once you open your mind and give yourself permission to dream.

Gemini Horoscope

(May 21 – Jun 20)

You may be uncomfortable with your feelings and might attempt to hide them from someone close to you, but this doesn’t mean that you are antisocial today. Paradoxically, your easygoing banter could encourage others to believe that you are being more revealing now than you actually are. Even if you are clever enough to fool everyone else, be careful about going so far that you also fool yourself. What you share is up to you; just make sure you know where to draw the line.

Cancer Horoscope

(Jun 21 – Jul 22)

Your sweeping vision is easily communicated to others today. Your associates at work are eager to place their trust in you because it seems as if your feet are placed solidly on the ground. But you may not be as sensible now as you appear. It’s best to be honest and let others know that there are still a lot of details missing from your plan. It’s more important to be real than to sound as if you have all the answers. Collaborating with others enhances your chances for success.

Leo Horoscope

(Jul 23 – Aug 22)

Although you’re likely to take the high road today, you’re still itching to make a statement about something that bothers you. Fortunately, you can ward off negativity by concentrating on your spiritual beliefs instead of being sabotaged by your own emotions. But the power of positive thinking alone isn’t enough to permanently put things back in order. You will have to follow up with decisive actions or your good intentions will be for naught.

Virgo Horoscope

(Aug 23 – Sep 22)

Even if you’re stressing over significant issues, ultimately they won’t matter all that much in the long run. You want to resolve a conflict, but the specifics of the situation are not as important as you may be led to believe. Too much information could make you anxious because you want to focus on the bigger picture. Unfortunately, it’s always a challenge for you to let go of the details. Taking the time to relax or meditate allows you to put your worries into proper perspective.

Libra Horoscope

(Sep 23 – Oct 22)

You have high hopes about accomplishing many things today, but you may be unrealistic in your expectations. Your current ability to complete your list of ambitious chores is complicated by a louder-than-usual creative buzz that you don’t want to waste. Naturally, you would rather be artsy and crafty, but now you might just have to fulfill your responsibilities before you follow your muse.

Scorpio Horoscope

(Oct 23 – Nov 21)

Maintaining a high level of integrity is essential to you, yet it’s challenging to convince everyone else to go along with your priorities today. Each person that is involved with you and your work has a different idea about what is necessary. Unfortunately, others may be unwilling to listen to what you have to say now, complicating your efforts. Nevertheless, staying focused on your final goal allows them to join in with their support when they are ready.

Sagittarius Horoscope

(Nov 22 – Dec 21)

Your flexible attitude is an asset today, yet your ability to adapt doesn’t mean that you’re wishy-washy. In fact, if someone at work pushes you too hard, you may become quite stubborn in your defense of your job performance. But don’t allow your ego to convince you that it’s okay to tell others what to do. Instead, encourage each person to find his or her own unique way. Give everyone else the same freedom that you want in return.

Capricorn Horoscope

(Dec 22 – Jan 19)

Getting over your fears is hard work, but reality is offering you a special opportunity to learn how to deepen your trust now in all things that are beyond your five senses. The veil between worlds has grown thinner and you may see visions now, even when your eyes are closed. Usually you do well when you rely strictly on the facts; today, you’ll perform even better if you put your imagination to work, too.

Aquarius Horoscope

(Jan 20 – Feb 18)

Messages may pop into awareness in symbolic form today and you might have to step out of your comfort zone to receive them. Pay careful attention to your friends and associates for clues. They will be guiding you now, even if they seem to have nothing to say. However, you have to listen with your heart to hear what’s going on beneath the surface. Recognizing the limitations of language empowers you to see the potential everywhere you look.

Pisces Horoscope

(Feb 19 – Mar 20)

You are traveling on automatic pilot today as you express your desire to take care of others. But this isn’t about any sort of verbal disclosure on your part; rather it’s more about what you actually do. You’re not interested in discussing your life intentions now. Stop thinking and initiate direct action before you talk yourself out of a perfectly fine strategy. He who hesitates is lost.

Daily Cosmic Calendar for September 12th

In the early going, you can rest on your laurels following yesterday’s grand trine in fire signs — composed of the Moon in Sagittarius, Mars in Leo and Uranus in Aries. Revelations abound and ingenious ideas can appear in your mind’s-eye like fiery comets dashing through the evening sky.  However, if you need to run important errands and take care of key business matters, then consider accomplishing these tasks well before the First Quarter Sun-Moon Phase clocks in at 10:09AM (activating 21 degrees of Virgo and Sagittarius). Quarter moon cycles like this one emphasize the need to cut through apparent obstacles on physical-emotional levels while you manage your professional affairs with greater finesse. Nevertheless, this solar-lunar face-off of 90-degrees also begins a void lunar uncertainty zone that lasts until 2:57AM tomorrow.  Once the void-of-course Moon takes over, pushing the envelope in any direction is fruitless. Relax, smell the roses, appreciate life’s little blessings, and sip your favorite beverage to chase away the blues or a recent build-up of stress.  Expect the unexpected around the time that the Sun parallels Uranus (4:50PM). Breakthroughs in higher consciousness can occur when the Sun makes this highly illuminating alignment. Healing forces rise to the occasion when Mercury parallels Chiron (10:06PM). Think more like a mentor or shaman — being a conduit for heavenly wisdom to become earthly knowledge in service to humanity.  Note to readers: All times are calculated for Pacific Daylight Time. Be sure to adjust all times according to your own local time so the alignments noted above will be exact for your location.

Current Moon Phase for Sept. 12 – First Quarter

First Quarter Moon

(waxing/52% illumination)

Emotions begin to stir coupled with recognizing that the new beginnings you are making must also increase personal security to be worthwhile over the long haul. This is a time when it’s appropriate to get in touch with your gut instincts and begin to guide your life more deliberately, with an awareness of using your “sixth sense” as well as your enthusiasm. Obstacles may emerge that require you to reevaluate how to better integrate yourself into your immediate environment

"THINK on THESE THINGS" for September 11th

“THINK on THESE THINGS”
By Joyce Sequichie Hifler

The truly humble are those who have no thought of using other people to their own avail. They are aware from their own intelligence and abilities, but because somewhere along the way they have acknowledged how inadequate they are alone.

The day of the self-sufficient person has never truly been. Without other people, without a sense of humility, success is lost to the overambitious.

English critic John Ruskin once said that the first test of a truly great person is humility.

There is greatness and sincerity when we can say to ourselves that we are only human and except for the grace of God we would even lack those qualities. We realize that the world owes us nothing, and no person owes us anything but love. It is not simply our job to serve ourselves, but it is our duty to serve others.

Humility is one of the finest qualities found in human nature. Without it we are nothing but a brash machine, with it we are warm and kind and always respected.

If we want to be friends to others, we must meet them on their level. This isn’t to say we have to be the type they are, but understand them and realize that it is a good thing that we are not all alike. This is the beauty of humanity, the variations that keep the human race from being monotonous.

And there is nothing sweeter to the human ear than to hear someone talk its language. Great persons have realized this and have made themselves adaptable to the little and to the big, to the learned and to the unschooled, in order to be more widely understood.

Who knew better than the Wise Master the importance of meeting others on their own level? The Master looked into the lives of every type of person and saw many changes that needed to be made, but also saw much to love and to waken. And in this gentleness and compassion the Wise Master could meet us all and speak out languages, then to be understood and followed.

We live in such narrow existence’s when we cannot communicate with anyone except those on our own level of thought and action. And if we only have one level on which to operate, there’s danger of it becoming a shelf for immovable objects.

Elder’s Meditation of the Day – September 11

“Listen to all the teachers in the woods. Watch the trees, the animals and all living things – you’ll learn more from them than from books.”

–Joe Coyhis, STOCKBRIDGE-MUNSEE

Nature is a living example of how communities live in harmony. If you go into the forest or mountain and sit still and watch, ask yourself, what lessons are being taught? Then watch how the animals conduct themselves. The trees could represent diversity. The flowers could represent people. Notice how everything in nature assists one another. See how balance works. See how conflict is handled. Can you see acts of forgiveness? Can you spot respect? Nature is full of wisdom if we will only consider her to be our teacher.

My Creator, today let me learn from nature.

September 11 – Daily Feast

September 11 – Daily Feast

Everything is not our fault, All of life is not our doing. But the one thing we can count on is our thinking. Think things through honestly and without excuse. Don’t tell it, and don’t think that’s all there is to it.The mind is the doorway to the heart and spirit. This is where the real part of us lives, where life springs forth or gives up. Knowing this, we can go in and clean house and begin to feed ourselves life-food. Life-food is from, Galun lati, the Spirit – and without the Spirit, everything is our fault. Never be without the Spirit.

Daily Motivator for Sept. 11 – Habit of achievement

Habit of achievement

Old, destructive habits can feel very comfortable, at least for the moment.  Over time, however, those negative habits can waste an enormous part of your  life, or worse.

The good news is that you can build positive, empowering habits that will  soon feel just as comfortable and familiar as the old negative ones. It takes  effort and commitment, and a little discomfort, yet it is well worth all  that.

Instead of habits that waste your time and burden your life, you can choose  habits that push you steadily forward. Instead of slowly creating heartache and  disappointment, you can be steadfastly creating success and achievement.

Time can be your enemy or your friend, depending on what you do with each  little moment. Make the choice, and put forth the effort, to make each moment  count for something positive and meaningful.

Choose a habit that brings you down and replace it with one that lifts you  up. Make it your goal to make achievement your default mode.

Some of the most powerful things you do are the things you do by habit. So  choose to direct all that power in a positive, life-enriching direction.

Daily OM for September 11 – Discovering True Selves

Discovering True Selves

Soul Seeing

by Madisyn Taylor

The soul is the purest expression of an individual and is not bound by physical forms or fleeting emotions.

When we want to see deeply into the heart and mind of another person, soul seeing, also called soul gazing, allows us to see their soul. The soul is the purest expression of an individual and is not bound by physical forms or fleeting emotions. Through a simple art that involves lo

oking deeply into a partner’s eyes, soul seeing can show you a person’s inner beauty that you might otherwise miss. It is possible for someone who appears cold to have a warm, giving, nurturing soul or someone of average appearance to have a beautiful soul. Soul seeing is a way of looking past shapes, sizes, attitudes, and behavior to see the real individual that lies beneath the surface. It allows you to see the true essence of another person, the radiance of their being, and their spirit within.

Soul seeing is accomplished by sitting face to face with another person. It is helpful to first state your intention before you begin. As you stare softly into each other’s eyes without stopping to look away, each of your souls is revealed to the other. Try not to look for anything in particular or seek traits you’re hoping to find. Simply let the other person’s soul reveal itself to you. After twenty minutes have passed, stay where you are and share a period of silent reflection with your partner for two minutes. You may have suddenly seen your partner’s inner nature as clearly as a bright day, or you may need to meditate on your experience before you feel comfortable with your impressions. Either way, soul seeing can be a wonderfully intimate and shared experience.

So little of who each of us is can be captured by our appearance or personality. The thoughts, fears, desires, and longings that are part of what makes us whole are not always written across our faces. Often, the most surprising thing you may learn while soul seeing is that while you and the other person may appear on the surface to be quite different, you actually share many of the same inner qualities. And then there is the unique beauty that resides within that is longing to be revealed to another who is willing to see. Soul seeing can help you experience the people in your life as they truly are, beyond any mental barriers or physical limitations.

The Magick and Power of Words

The Magick and Power of Words

Author:   Luna
As I’m currently writing this, it’s Christmas. We’ve passed the Winter Solstice (and the supposed end of the world—guess the Mayans didn’t know everything, no offense to them) and are moving through the parade of winter holidays. And I’ve noted something about these winter holidays—regardless of tradition or religion, these holidays center around two things. These two things are reflection and togetherness. We reflect on the year we’ve experienced, both in terms of happenings within and happenings without, and contemplate how they will affect the year to come. With regards to togetherness, we take this time to come together as family, friends, colleagues and lovers. By so doing, we remind ourselves of how much we cherish their company, no matter our differences, and wish nothing but peace and love for the rest of world.
So, should you care to oblige me, I’m going to combine these two things—to reflect on togetherness, with regards to the current state of the world.
Let’s face it: the world is going through some hard times. The true state of affairs is probably more serious than my words can convey, but this is what I see around me. We’re doing what we can to get through these times, make the future brighter for ourselves as well as future generations. We’re trying, but there are a number of things holding us back. Some of these we may overcome quickly, while others will take more time. But, with regards to the spirit of these holidays, there is one aspect of our problems as the human race that has come to the forefront of my mind. It’s the fact that, for whatever reason, conflict drives us apart around the world.
Let’s take the political situation within the United States of America for example. I live here in the US, so it makes the example much more personal and easier to relate as I’m more aware of it that the political situation of other areas of the world. I want it to be noted that this isn’t because I don’t think other political conflicts in other areas of the world aren’t important. On the contrary, I wish I knew more of what goes on outside the small part of the world where I live. But I feel this will serve as a great example, as most of us will likely be aware of the political happenings of the United States.
Okay, let’s dive in headfirst, shall we?
In the United States, there has always been a political system that has allowed for multiple political parties to exist, voicing their opinions and concerns as well as pressing forward on issues that concern them. It’s one of the things I appreciate about our government, regardless of how I feel about the actions we take as a nation (or as people of a nation) . However, in recent years especially, two parties, the well-known Republican and Democratic parties, have barged to the forefront of the political scene and began a storm of relentless arguing and bickering over various issues. And I include both arguing and bickering in that statement because they’ve both happened. There have been times where they’ve engaged in polite, rational and respectful discussion. And there have been other times where they’ve just gone at each other simply because one side hates the other’s guts. It’s come to the point these days where people on either side (not everyone, but some people) are not willing to hear the other side out simply because it’s the other side and, in their minds, it’s trying to destroy the fabric of our country.
On the one hand, the Democratic party sees the Republicans as stubborn and delusional, trying to hold onto an America that no longer exists and not only failing to comprehend the situations at hand but refusing to compromise where necessary. On the other hand, the Republicans see the Democrats as trying to impose new and foreign values on America, using the wrong methods to fix our economic problems and trying to drive us down the proverbial drain. Now, this obviously isn’t the case for every Democrat or every Republican. I know there are multiple exceptions to these stereotypes. But these trends in both parties have emerged strongly in recent years, particularly during our elections, and these more radical voices have many times drowned out more moderate voices that would be willing to sit down and discuss the issues in a more respectful manner. There is a common theme to each side: not everyone on one side is always willing to hear the other side out on what it has to say.
So what drove me to think about this? Well, it was two things, both of them easily found on TV or the Internet. The first was the 2008 animated film, “Horton Hears a Who, ” based on the well-known Dr. Seuss story. Sour Kangaroo’s refusal to believe Horton drove the population of the Jungle of Nool to madness, and their actions nearly caused the destruction of Whoville. And yet, once the situation became clear and the Whos became heard by those that only saw their speck of a world, Horton didn’t reject Kangaroo. He made amends with the offer of a cookie, possibly knowing that she had better intentions when she first began to move against him.
The second was yet another episode of My Little Pony: Friendship is Magic (Hey, pony stuff has been popping up all over the Internet—if it’s finally ready to be discussed here on the Witches’ Voice, I’m willing to be the first to talk about it) . In fact, it was the thirteenth episode of season two, named after the ponies’ own winter holiday, “Hearth’s Warming Eve.” Within the episode, the main characters put on a production of their nation’s beginning. Within that production, a disagreement between the three tribes (the pegasi, the unicorns and the Earth ponies) spiraled into all out conflict that drove them further apart. It also caused beings called Windigos to feed off their hatred, driving their world further and further towards a world-ending blizzard (yeah, that kind of stuff shows up in a kid’s show) . And yet three ponies, one from each of the tribes, came together and realized not only their seemingly inevitable fate but also that each bore no hatred towards the other two. As one of them put it, “No matter what happens, we’re all ponies.” And at that moment, a magic flame born of their friendship burned the Windigos to death and began to thaw the world and the rest of the ponies, both in body and in spirit. Their new respect for each other and banding together of all three tribes led to the founding of Equestria… at least, according to the pageant.
So both the movie and the episode got me thinking about our situation. Perhaps it’s time we all (or at least as many of us as are willing) take a moment in our conflicts and say to each other, “Hey, I know we don’t see eye to eye, but I know we both have the best intentions. I want to understand why you take the position you do, and I’m willing to listen to what you have to say. If you want to hear me out, I am more than willing to share with you why I think the way I do. Let’s resolve our conflict peacefully and come to a better understanding.” If you think about it, our world could definitely use more of that. Too often, I see arguments flare up and conflicts spiral out of control because neither side is willing to understand the other, and I think we can all agree that simply taking the time to listen respectfully and with intent to understand will mend many of the fences in our world.
Will it happen overnight? Of course not. Discussion like this will take time, and not everyone will want to participate in this initially. It may take a while for this to really take hold. Will we reach universal peace and harmony between all peoples through this? I have no idea. If we do, it likely won’t be in my lifetime (and I’m 23 years old) . But I know this is the right path for us, and it is due in part to this very community.
Yes, I’m talking about the Witches’ Voice, and the Pagans and others who make this possible. I include both those who share their words every week and those who merely stop by every so often to read what essays are up on the home page. The fact that you are even taking time to read my essay (which I’m grateful for) is a sign that we are willing to take the time to listen to someone else’s words. And I really mean this, especially to the many of you who’ve read my essays this last year and who’ve even contacted me via email to share your thoughts.
When I first came to this site, I was just a college student studying Wicca on her own, not even sure if I’d be able to find others to befriend and learn from, much less considering what impact my essays would have on your lives. And here we are, a year later. I’ve gotten the chance to share my thoughts with so many of you without fear of being laughed at or rejected, and I’ve gotten the chance to hear from many of you. Many of you have given me suggestions, others of you have simply praised my words, and still others of you have extended a friendly hand (metaphorically speaking) and asked me for friendship and guidance. I want you all to know that, even though I haven’t been able to get back to you all, I’m thinking of you constantly and the fact that you’ve taken the time to at least glance at what I have to say. It’s more than I could’ve ever hoped for, and I thank the God and Goddess for this blessing. It’s meant more to me than I’m sure you all know.
But let’s take this willingness to listen and consider another’s words, thoughts and positions beyond the Witches’ Voice to other areas of our lives. Let’s sit down with our friends and families, with our lovers and colleagues, and even with those we might not like. Let’s take the time to hear them out on what they have to say and help them understand our own positions and peaceful, rational and respectful manner. I know we can do it. You want to know how I know this? Because I’ve seen us as a community. The Pagans, Witches, Wiccans and others who make up this community are a testament to the power of understanding, and I only have to see the total read count on one article on this site to know that.
The late Scott Cunningham said, “Mock not the rituals and spells of another, for who can say yours are greater in power or wisdom?” I’d like to add the words of another to this statement, for words are just as important as spells and rituals, regardless of the time of year. Please consider what I’ve said here and how you can apply it to situations in your own life. It will take time, perhaps many lifetimes, but I know that every little step will help. The world isn’t over just yet, and we’re still here. Let’s work towards a brighter future, where, anywhere in the world, one can share their thoughts with the knowledge that what they say will be respected and could even spark a thoughtful discussion.
And to all of you, I wish a holiday season full of the brightest blessings and brighter futures.

The Goddess and The God

The Goddess and The God

Author:   Danielle.dyer

The Goddess has been worshipped as a Triple Deity -Maiden, Mother, and Crone (Dark Mother, Wise Woman, The Hag) – from the beginning of religion. The numbers three, and multiples of three, are sacred in many ancient cultures. The priests of Babylon taught that three was a lucky number as well. In the writings of Pythagoras, we find that the philosopher called three a “triple Word, ” meaning that using the number three in particular circumstances, such as repeating spells and rituals three times, can create whatever is held in the mind of the user.

Later in history, the alchemist Paracelsus associated the number three with gold; to alchemists, gold was not so much a physical metal as a symbol for spiritual enlightenment. The ancient Chinese philosopher Lao-Tsu said that three is the perfect number, for it engenders all things. In numerology, the number three represents creativity, activity, and knowledge.

Ancient Mystery Schools always had three main steps or degrees through which the student must pass. Today, we still find this idea of three degrees of knowledge used to designate a Witch’s progress in a coven.

We can understand this trinity better if we compare it to the three stages of human life: youth and puberty, adulthood, and old age. Since the Goddess’s power is all encompassing She will present aspects that speak to all humans, regardless of their age. These esoteric ideas cover and comfort from birth to death and beyond.

The first Goddess aspect is the Maiden. This phase holds the matrix of creation, which will produce and create when the time is ripe. She is matter and energy held in suspension until the right time arrives. The Maiden, sometimes called the Virgin or the Huntress, represents the Spring of the year, the dawn, fresh beginnings of all life, the repeating cycle of birth and rebirth, the waxing moon and the crescent moon, enchantment, and seduction. Her traditional color is white. She is the Way-Shower, the Guide through the inner labyrinth to the Divine Center where the greatest of spiritual Mysteries lie.

The second Goddess aspect is the Mother. This is the matrix in motion, the archetype involved in active creation. In humans, the physical desire, the mental will and concentration, and the spiritual balance and understanding are all necessary to produce a desired result. It is easy for humans to identify with the Mother aspect, for they see the Mother around them in all human and animal mothers. The Mother aspect of the Goddess represents the Summer, blazing noon, reproduction, and fertility, the ripeness of life, the Full Moon, and high point in all cycles. Her traditional color is red, the color of blood and life itself. She is the Great Teacher of the Mysteries.

The last aspect is the crone, also called the Dark Mother, the Old Wise One, or the Hag. Since this aspect symbolizes death and dissolution, it is frightening to many people. Everything in the universe has a life cycle, at the end of which they malfunction, decay, and transform into a different set of materials, elements that are recycled and reformed into something new. In humans, the soul is recycled by the Crone and her cauldron into a new incarnation. The Crone represents winter, the night, the universal abyss where life rests before rebirth, the gateway to death and reincarnation, the waning moon and the New Moon, and the deepest of Mysteries and prophecies. Her traditional color is black, and sometimes the deepest of purples or dark blue. She is the Initiator into the Mysteries.

The fact that She is a single archetype plus a trinity of aspects makes Her very complex. It is impossible to reduce the Goddess’s spiritual form and meaning to words on paper. She is the beginning, the ending, and everything in between.

The Horned God has been recognized and worshipped as far back as the Stone Age, where we find paintings of horned, ithyphallic men. The Horned God is not the Christian devil. We find the image of the Pagan God in the Egyptian god Amun-Ra, with his ram’s horns and in the Greek Great God Pan, with his goat horns and hooves. Among the Celts, the Horned God was called Cernunnos. This deity was sometimes linked with the Otherworld, particularly the Underworld section, and reincarnation.

In the original myths concerning the God, one finds him as the co-creator, vital companion, and mystical priest of the Goddess. His prime purpose is to join with Her to create order out of chaos, substance of spiritual matter, and life from universal energies swirling in the dark abyss. His next purpose is to carry out Her will and see that Her laws are obeyed.

The God is also frequently seen in trinity form, although, like the Goddess, His more complex that this simple definition. The three aspects are the Divine Child, the Son/Lover, and the Sacrificed Savior/Lord of Death. Even though these three aspects are the most important, the God has many others: Sky-Father and Ruler of the Heavens, Lord of the Forest and Animals, the Supreme Healer, the Trickster, God of Judgment, the Great Magus or Magician, God of the Waters, and the Hero-Warrior.

As the Divine Child, the God represents beginnings and the start of new cycles. This includes new hope and new opportunities, physical as well as mental, emotional, and spiritual. His traditional color is the dark green of plant life. The Divine Child is the signpost of the inner spiritual journey we each must take, the sign that says, “begin here.” We begin as a child, taking the first tentative steps along an unknown and unfamiliar path that leads to a mystical destination that is difficult to understand until we reach the end.

The Son/Lover aspect symbolizes maturity and responsibility, the desire to take into account the needs of others more than oneself. The God in this aspect balances sexual desire and need with companionship and tenderness. His traditional color is red, the color of the life force and the birth fluids. Combined with the powers of the Goddess, He shows us that there must be a blending of different energies to create. This creation includes ideas, inventions, and the arts. He is the Companion on our spiritual journey, the one who points out the path if we start to go astray.

The Great Rite of Wicca is connected with the Mother aspect of the Goddess and the Son/Lover aspect of the God. Those outside the Wiccan religion can misunderstand this Rite. The Great Rite has its roots in the ancient Sacred Marriage between priestess and King, which dates back to the Neolithic era. Originally, a king or tribal ruler could not hold the office unless he wed the Goddess. He had to be a Chosen One, either appointed by the High Priestess of the tribe’s religion, or have passed certain stringent tests. This esoteric, spiritual marriage was symbolized by actual nuptials between the would-be king and the High Priestess of the Goddess or the land, which included sexual rites.

Today, Wiccan groups usually practice this Rite in symbolic form, rather than in actuality. The symbolic act is the dipping of the athame into a cup of wine or juice during a ritual (the cup symbolizes the womb of the Goddess and the athame the phallus of the God) . Some Witches believe that the priestess should dip the athame into a cup of wine or juice held by the priest. However, you can reverse this, with the priestess holding the cup and the priest using the athame. If the Great Rite is physically performed, it is in private and between a husband and wife, high priestess and priest.

The Sacrificed Savior/Lord of Death aspect of the God can be difficult to understand as the dark aspect of the Crone. Mystery Religions frequently were connected with the Sacrificed Savior, who gave his life so that spiritual knowledge and enlightenment could come into the world. This aspect of the God always resurrected and lived again, reminding us that everything is recycled and that human life reincarnates. The Greeks used the word soter for Savior; soter means “one who sows the seed.” In mythology, the Sacrificed Savior was reborn of the Earth Mother aspect of the Goddess.

The Lord of Death was originally the Lord of Comfort for the souls who rest in the abyss before rebirth. At the will of the Goddess, He gathers souls at the proper time and guides them to the afterlife, while comforting those who fear or are in pain. Under His Celtic guise of Lord or the Wild Hunt, the God sees that karmic debts are paid and that destiny is fulfilled. In this, He is the equivalent of the Greek goddesses, the Erinyes. However, unlike the Erinyes, who relentlessly and mercilessly hunted down those guilty of the breaking of blood laws, the Lord of the Hunt makes certain that the souls He seeks are ready for the transition, that they are in the right place at the right time to meet their destiny.

Although His appearance and actions are fearsome, this aspect of the God is actually one of great compassion. His traditional color is the black of the abyss in the Underworld, the temporary black of death that absorbs and erases pain and suffering. He is the Gate-Keeper, who tests our worth before we are allowed to enter the deepest Mysteries.
