A Talisman or an Amulet… What’s the Difference? (Explained)

Since ancient times, a man has placed faith in the magical power of talismans and amulets, various objects capable of defending their owner from spells and negative influences of all kinds. Not many know that the two terms are not synonymous but are actually very different.

KEY TAKEAWAYS

Talismans and amulets are both objects with distinct purposes.

Talismans are intentionally created objects, often jewelry, designed to attract positive energies or outcomes, such as luck or love. They are charged with specific intentions.

Amulets, on the other hand, are objects, like pendants or charms, primarily used for protection against negative energies or harm.

They are not typically charged with intentions but are chosen for their inherent protective qualities or symbolism.

Mercury

Wednesday is named for Wotan (Odin), closest Norse equivalent to the fleet-footed Roman god. Adaptable Mercury rules learning, luck, travel, and trade, so Wednesday is good for workings on any of these matters.  Improve communication. Increase focus and alertness. Prosper in business or games of chance.  Make or consecrate money-drawing charms. Wednesday is also a fine day for divination, especially using cards, runes, or lots. Mercury is a nimble trickster, so if you were going to do a spell to distract or mislead (not that you would!), Wednesday is the day for those shenanigans.

Straith/Straif

This symbol, used for the sound St, is Straith (sometimes seen as Straif), the Blackthorn tree. A symbol of authority and control, the Blackthorn is connected to strength and triumph over adversity. Blackthorn is a tree (although some might argue it’s more of a really big shrub) of winter, and its berries only ripen after the first frost. White flowers appear in the spring, and the bark is black and thorny.

On a medicinal level, Blackthorn berries–sloe berries–are brewed to make a tonic (this is what Sloe Gin is made from). The tonic can be used as a laxative and/or diuretic, as well as a skin astringent. In folklore, the Blackthorn has a fairly unpleasant reputation. An English legend refers to a devastating winter as a “Blackthorn Winter.” It also represents the darker side of magic and witchcraft. Because it’s a plant that becomes hardy when all around it is dying, it is associated with the Dark Mother, the Crone aspect of the Goddess, particularly the Cailleach in some parts of Scotland and Ireland. There is also a strong connection to the Morrighan, because of Blackthorn’s association with the blood and death of warriors. In fact, in early Celtic culture, the Blackthorn was popular for its use in the cudgel shillelagh.

Straith Correspondences

Mundane Aspects: Expect the unexpected, especially when it comes to change. Your plans may be altered, or even destroyed, so plan to deal with it. The appearance of Straith often indicates the influence of external forces.

Magical Aspects: You’re at the beginning of a new journey, and there will be some surprises–possibly unpleasant ones–along the way. Overcoming these obstacles will give you strength. Realize that you–and your life–are changing.

Seven

If your life path number is 7, your life will be predominantly influenced by your mind. Whether it’s intellectual pursuits, philosophical discourses, or a deep spiritual/meditative life through your 7th chakra, you are made for it. You would make a great professor, philosopher or a guru. Because you are too much in the head, you may find yourself alien to matters of the heart. It isn’t easy – you just don’t get the clues, or don’t know how to give them out. You avoid emotions, and if your partner feels them naturally, you may blame them for being hysterical, when in fact they are being just natural. If the digits of a date add up to number 7, know that it’s a wonderful time to cook up ideas, to write a paper, to post on social media, or meditate.

Pink Moon: Full Moon for April 2024

Prepare for the Full Pink Moon!

You can see the full Moon in April on Tuesday, April 23. It reaches its brightest point at 7:49 P.M. Learn why we traditionally call it the “Pink Moon” and some fascinating facts and folklore.

When to See the Full Moon in April 2024

Venture outside on Tuesday, April 23, to catch a glimpse of April’s full Pink Moon. This full Moon reaches peak illumination at 7:49 p.m. Eastern Time.

For the best view of this lovely spring Moon, find an open area and watch as the Moon rises just above the horizon. At this point, it will appear its biggest and take on a golden hue! (Find local Moon rise and set times here.)

Why Is It Called the Pink Moon?

The full Moon names used by The Old Farmer’s Almanac come from various sources, including Native American, Colonial American, and European sources. Traditionally, each full Moon name was applied to the entire lunar month in which it occurred, not only to the full Moon.

Although we wish the name “Pink Moon” had to do with the color of the Moon, the reality is not quite as mystical or awe-inspiring. In truth, April’s full Moon often corresponded with the early springtime blooms of a certain wildflower native to eastern North America: Phlox subulata—commonly called creeping phlox or moss phlox—which also went by the name “moss pink.”

Thanks to this seasonal association, this full Moon came to be called the “Pink” Moon!

Alternative April Moon Names

In April, Moon names reference spring abound!

Breaking Ice Moon (Algonquin) and Moon When the Streams Are Again Navigable (Dakota) reference the melting ice and increased mobility of the early spring season.

Budding Moon of Plants and Shrubs (Tlingit) and Moon of the Red Grass Appearing (Oglala) speak to the plant growth that will soon kick into high gear.

Other names refer to the reappearance of certain animals, including Moon When the Ducks Come Back (Lakota), Moon When the Geese Lay Eggs (Dakota), and Frog Moon (Cree).

Along the same vein, Sucker Moon (Anishinaabe) notes the time to harvest sucker fish, which return to streams or lake shallows to spawn. According to legend, now is the time when this fish comes back from the spirit world to purify bodies of water and the creatures living in them. (This name may also be applied to the February Moon to honor the sacrifice of the sucker fish to feed the Anishinaabe peoples, traditionally helping them to survive the winter.)

All dates and times are Eastern Time. See our Moon Phase Calendar to customize times and dates to your location.

April Full Pink Moon Manifestations

Write Down Your Manifestations

Putting your manifestations and intentions in writing is always a good idea, especially during a full moon. When manifesting, make sure to write about the things you’re looking for in your new life in the present tense, as if you already have them. If you’re manifesting love, Samay recommends jotting down all the of qualities that you are looking for in your next partner on a piece of paper. Then, hold the paper “up to the light of the Full Moon and visualize yourself with your ideal partner,” the astrologer says.

When you’re done, don’t forget to fold the note and store it under your pillow. “Sleep on it for the night and trust that the universe will bring you the next soulmate,” says Samay.

Express Gratitude

Gratitude is one of the key ways to use the law of attraction, so if you’re trying to manifest something into your life, expressing gratitude for the blessings in your life is a must. To do this, Samay suggests making a list of the people who have “contributed to your success and well-being” by listing out everything they’ve done to help you, as well as the things you admire the most about them.

“During the full moon, take a moment to read the list and express gratitude for each person on it,” shares Samay. Then, to keep the good vibes coming, “visualize yourself receiving more recognition and support from the people who are about to enter your life.”

Let Go Of Negativity

It’s easier said than done, but if there were ever a time to remove the people and habits in your life that are holding you back, it would be now. Even if you can’t find anything specific worth eliminating, Samay recommends using this time to “let go of any negative thoughts or emotions that are causing you stress.”

“During the Full Moon, light a candle and meditate on the feeling of lightness and clarity that comes with letting go,” Samay tells Bustle. “Invite your spirit guides to cleanse and purify your magnetic field to bring in balance and harmony. Envision yourself feeling calm and balanced as you move forward.”

The full moon shouldn’t just be an emotional release — it can be a material one, too. “Declutter[ing] is one of the best ways to get rid of any physical or emotional clutter that is weighing you down,” Samay explains. To make room for the manifestations coming into your life, Samay proposes giving your home a complete overhaul by clearing out your space and “organizing your belongings.”

King of Cups – Minor Arcana Court Card

Emotional events

A regal, older man stands before a throne made of shell. He wears a crown with pearls on the spiky tips. In one he holds a chalice trimmed with scallop shells. His other hand lies wrapped around the throne. The throne stands on a beach, strewn with shells, starfish, and driftwood. The King of Cups has moved to a state of being where he is no longer ruled by the tides of emotion. He has earned his throne, which represents security and stability in the mist of emotions (the water of the sea). His crown with pearls symbolizes spiritual enlightenment found in the sacred center of every human, the discovery of which enabled him to escape the emotional extremes of life. The shells (continuing life from one cycle to another) and the starfish (pentacle of protection) have come from the sea, which is the cauldron of creation and rebirth. Through the King’s companionship with the Water dragon he has learned how to use emotional energy in a more positive way.

Divinatory Meaning: This card represents a loving and caring masculine influence. There is a possiblity of a journey across water. You may experience an episode of up and down emotions.

Beith/Beth

Beith, or Beth, corresponds to the letter B in the alphabet, and is associated with the Birch tree. When this symbol is used, it is representative of new beginnings, change, release, and rebirth. In some traditions, it also has connections with purification.

Birch trees are hardy. They’ll grow just about anywhere, including on bare soil. Because they tend to grow in clusters, what may be just one or two seedlings now can be practically an entire forest in a few decades. In addition to being a sturdy sort of tree, the Birch is useful. In days gone by, it was used for infants’ cradles, and is still harvested today to make cabinets and furniture.

From a magical perspective, there are a number of uses for Birch. The branches are traditionally incorporated into the construction of a besom, and are used for the bristles. Use the white outer bark in ritual in place of paper or parchment–just be sure you only harvest the bark from a fallen Birch tree, not a living one. Ancient herbalists discovered that various parts of this tree can be used for medicinal purposes. Bark was once brewed into a tea to fight fevers, and the leaves were used alternately as a laxative and a diuretic, depending on how they were prepared.

Beith Correspondences

Mundane Aspects: When this symbol appears, it means it’s time to get rid of all those negative influences you’ve been carrying around with you. Figure out what things are bad in your life, which relationships are toxic, and find a way to leave them behind. Instead of being dragged down by the negative, focus on the positive things you have in your life, the blessings and abundance. Use these things as a focus, rather than the harmful or damaging ones.

Magical Aspects: Consider the property of renewal and rebirth, as demonstrated by the Birch. Use this as a tool for spiritual and emotional regrowth, and developing your own ability to regenerate where there has been emptiness or devastation.

Nine, as one of the core numerological numbers, implies idealism turned into the main principle of life. Figuratively speaking, you do not pretend to understand the purpose of the Creator, but hope that things are arranged reasonably and end well. Everything else is derived from this. You are kind as you don’t feel entitled to increase the amount of evil in the world. You display exceptional intuition and insight because you are afraid of accidentally causing someone harm or doing someone wrong. You love people because you think this is the only opportunity to make them happy.

The main positive qualities of the Nine are good will to all people without exception, the ability to be sympathetic and to show mercy to those who need it.

Moreover, you have natural charm, the ability to awaken good feelings. Apparently, this quality is granted to you as an additional tool for the promotion of your views of life.

Sources

Witches were perceived as evil beings by early Christians in Europe, inspiring the iconic Halloween figure.

Images of witches have appeared in various forms throughout history—from evil, wart-nosed women huddling over a cauldron of boiling liquid to hag-faced, cackling beings riding through the sky on brooms wearing pointy hats. In pop culture, the witch has been portrayed as a benevolent, nose-twitching suburban housewife; an awkward teenager learning to control her powers and a trio of charmed sisters battling the forces of evil. The real history of witches, however, is dark and, often for the witches, deadly.

The Origin of Witches

Early witches were people who practiced witchcraft, using magic spells and calling upon spirits for help or to bring about change. Most witches were thought to be pagans doing the Devil’s work. Many, however, were simply natural healers or so-called “wise women” whose choice of profession was misunderstood.

It’s unclear exactly when witches came on the historical scene, but one of the earliest records of a witch is in the Bible in the book of 1 Samuel, thought be written between 931 B.C. and 721 B.C. It tells the story of when King Saul sought the Witch of Endor to summon the dead prophet Samuel’s spirit to help him defeat the Philistine army.

The witch roused Samuel, who then prophesied the death of Saul and

Mondays are ruled by the moon and the divine feminine energy that this celestial body is associated with. The cycle of the moon has long been associated with the menstrual cycle. Therefor it is an excellent planet to work with for fertility, transformation, and change.

The moon rules the realm of the subconscious. This is where we access our emotions, our intuition, our psychic gifts. You would do well to perform divination or shadow work on this day.

Spells and rituals: involving agriculture, animals, female fertility, messages, reconciliations, theft, voyages, dreams, emotions, clairvoyance, home, family, medicine, cooking, personality, merchandising, psychic work, Faerie magic, and Goddess rituals.

Magic Monday spells:

Drink a soothing chamomile tea with the intention to have prophetic dreams that night.

Call upon the Goddess selene when performing and practicing tarot for an increase to your intuition.

Write down your grievances on toilet paper or a natural based paper and flush it down the toilet or send it away in a body of water.
