Dog-gone Doggie of the Day (from my neck of the woods) for March 11th

Sadie, the Dog of the Day
Name: Sadie
Age: Twelve years old
Gender: Female Breed: Old English Sheepdog, Saint Bernard
Home: Louisville, Kentucky, USA
This is my beautiful “Sheep-Bernard” Sadie Baby or Sadie Bird or Pupino. As you can see she is a perfect mixture of her parents – long hair and sense of humor from her mom and coloring and soulful eyes from her dad. Sadie was a rescue baby weaned at only a couple of weeks and wouldn’t be around today if my vet hadn’t called and told me about her. She was being passed off as a full Old English Sheepdog and was living in dirty and unsafe conditions. Even though I wasn’t ready for another dog, off we went for an adventure together.

To look at this huge goofy looking girl you wouldn’t think that she is sensitive but she is clearly attuned to my moods and what’s going on around her emotionally. I’ve never heard of Saint’s being used as service dogs or therapy dogs but if this is consistent with the breed I think they would be perfect. I guess she got the drool factor from her mom the OES so she doesn’t drool much unless there is some mouth-watering people food she’s trying to get.

People should never be afraid of rescue dogs. Sadie has brought me years of joy and I sure do hope that she feels the same way about me. She’s my Dog of the Day.

A Balm to Soothe Emotions

A Balm to Soothe Emotions

This spell uses the principle of sympathy for its foundation.
By administering the balm to the instrument of injury, people believed the wound would heal faster.
Find an object that symbolizes the issue central to your anger.
The item should be something that you don’t mind leaving covered with cream.
Also, go to your medicine cabinet and find some first aid ointment or any salve that heals wounds.
Light a white candle (for peace) and place both the cream and the token in front of you.
Slowly consider all the reasons for your anger.
Let that energy pour outward into the chosen symbol until, in your mind’s eye,
it radiates a red light from your fury. By this point you should feel calmer too.
Next take enough cream in both palms to cover the emblem.
As you apply cream to the emblem, say,
“As balm to this figure, so also to my heart.
Where animosity has grown, healing now impart.”
Repeat this thirteen times while massaging the cream into the object.
Place this in a safe place so peace may grow undisturbed.
For dispersing negative tempers, restoring calm and equilibrium, forgiveness. Timing –
Waning moons, dawn. Moon in Gemini or Aries.
The months of February and August. Monday (healing) or Tuesday (to encourage logic).

Chant of Protection

Chant of Protection

Goddess, Give me protection from the outside world,
Let whatever people say about me not hurt,
Let whatever I fear not bother me,
Let all the mixed up feelings inside be released without harm,
Goddess, you see my pain,
I am thy child, I am thy soul,
I need a dream to cast away this pain,
Something to soothe my soul,
Give me protection from the outside world.

March 10 – Daily Feast

March 10 – Daily Feast

The more stress we have the less we like other people – and ourselves. A little pressure is sufficient. Stress can be productive if it is something we like doing. But when we can no longer ka no gi a, enjoy and sing about life, we need to reevaluate the direction we are going. It is impossible to withdraw from every problem, but neither can we go on without some relief. Being responsible is a natural part of life – very necessary to living well and being contented. To find a happy medium is to center ourselves where peace and answers can be found. It does not come from the noise and complaints of the world – but from that secret place of harmony and strength within the heart. It is a place that must be added to and kept harmonious, for it gives us poise and renewal when we need it.

~ Once you have heard the meadowlark and caught the scent of fresh-plowed earth, peace cannot escape you. ~

Precious Pup of the Day for March 10th

Lucie, the Dog of the Day
Name: Lucie
Age: Two years old
Gender: Female Breed: Shiba Inu, Jack Russell mix
Home: Smithtown, New York, USA
Lucie is a very energetic and lovable dog, although she thinks of herself as more of a human. She frequently sits on the couch like us and will try to get into chairs., too. She wants to be part of everything we do, as you could probably guess! She was rescued from a puppy mill in Tennessee in April 2009. She was named after the character, Lucie, from the novel, A Tale of Two Cities by Charles Dickens. When some people see her they think she’s still a puppy, but she is full grown – as much as she’ll ever get – at two years old. She is extremely protective of her family, even though if someone ever was to break in, she would run away and hide. Her biggest fear is the fire alarm beeping when steam gets too near it. Lucie is the cutest and most playful dog I have ever known.

How the Ostara Egg Came to Be

How the Ostara Egg Came to Be

The modern belief that eggs are delivered by a rabbit, comes from the legend of the Goddess Eostre. Eostre was walking one fine Spring day and came upon a beautiful little bird. The poor bird’s wing was badly injured and Eostre, feeling great compassion for the little creature, wanted to heal it. But the little bird’ wing was so badly damaged that Eostre knew it would never be able to fly again even after She healed it. So, Eostre decided to help the bird by healing it in a way that would give it mobility and a little something more. She turned it into a rabbit!

During the transformation, the rabbit retained the ability to lay eggs. The rabbit was so grateful to Eostre for saving its life that it laid a sacred egg in Her honor, joyously decorated it and then humbly presented it to the Goddess. She was so pleased and so touched by the rabbit’s thoughtful gift that She wished all humankind to share in her joy. In honoring her wishes, the rabbit went all over the world distributing these beautifully decorated little gifts of life and continues to do so even today.

Ostara Traditions

Ostara Traditions

image Spring egg hunts have origins in many lands. Some think that the egg hunt was symbolic of our ancestors, who would search for birds nests in early Spring. The eggs in them provided much needed fresh protein to add to the diet after a long, lean winter. Of course, egg hunts also have origins in India and China, where they were tied to the Karmic belief that we must each find our own path in each new life. Egg hunts became popular in the United States thanks to Abraham Lincoln, who, in 1862, invited children form the Washington D.C. area to hunt for eggs on the White House lawn. This tradition continues even today.

image Eggs were buried by the Teutons to infuse the Earth with the life-giving properties of the egg. They were planted in fields, flower beds, window boxes and even animal barns for fertility. People would eat eggs in order to gain from the life-giving benefits of the egg.

image The Teutons believed it was very bad luck to wear your spring clothes before Ostara. They would secretly work all winter on beautiful new clothing for the Ostara celebration. This is where the tradition of having new, fancy clothes for Easter morning came from. It is also the origin of the ‘Easter parade’ to show off the new, beautiful clothing you now have.

We are not always granted the privilege of going back and doing things differently. If we were, could we? We might if we had new knowledge. Otherwise, we would do the same thing we did before. It was all we knew. Every race has had its Trail of Tears, in fact, every individual has suffered and agonized over what he might have done. Gentle people hope that by cooperation things will work for all concerned. It isn’t in the hearts of the gentle to think that others do not have their same heartfelt ways. But challenges in the present times are sufficient without adding the past. If we know so much now, we need to use it. We can, sometimes, project ahead by looking back objectively to tap some reserve of knowledge. If we lack such inner knowledge, if we lack wisdom, we need to ask. And then we listen for the still small voice of direction.

And Last But Not Least, Our Special Kitty Of The Day for March 9th!

Sylvia, the Cat of the Day
Name: Sylvia
Age: Twelve years old
Gender: Female
Kind: Domestic Short Hair
Home: Harrisburg, Pennsylvania, USA
Presenting to Cat of the Day fans – Sylvia! She came to my life nearly twelve years ago – a stray kitten from a stray-friendly neighborhood. I was in the market for a new companion, having recently said goodbye to her predecessor, alas the Rainbow Bridge welcomed another angel. Soon after, I welcomed this sweet angel to my life.

Sylvia is wonderful; a true Diva Cat with many admirable qualities. She is open minded; calmly receptive to new experiences and new people, and curious about unfamiliar foods. As You can see, she loves to be outside when the weather is nice! In the city, enjoying her outdoor domain means being tethered on the balcony, but Sylvia, true to her name’s meaning, “from the forest”, is also an adventurous hiker. When the opportunity presents to walk in secluded woods, she walks right along with me – if we should lose line of sight between us, the ‘meowing’ begins! It is such fun to walk in woods with Sylvia as she meows occasionally to make sure we don’t get too separated. Very smart on her part as well, as her coat blends perfectly with Pennsylvania forest floors. If she would ever choose to strike out alone, I would be hard pressed to find her. Luckily for me, she believes that adventures are fun, but home is best!

Special Kitty of the Day for March 8th

Celeste, the Cat of the Day
Name: Celeste
Age: Eleven months old
Gender: Female
Kind: Tabby
Home: Emporia, Kansas, USA
This is Celestial (Celeste for short), and she’s a Cinnamon Tortoiseshell Tabby. While volunteering at the local shelter we came to know Celeste and she soon won our hearts! Unfortunately the shelter euthanizes strays on schedule. We watched as her carrier slowly made its way toward the top of the list. We just couldn’t let that happen. Her litter was found under the porch of an abandoned house and there were two left. After much deliberation, we decided to bring one sickly, striped, green-eyed kitten into the family! Since then our lives have been enriched with a steady supply of hijinks, acrobatics, amazing saves, and occasional all out lovefests.

She loves to sit upon our 55 gal. fish tank and one day while we were feeding the fish she decided to leap into action and by sheer luck we managed to catch her midair, her athletic body suspended over the open water. Now she’ll try anything to get the colorfull little fishies!

She also has bravado, and will walk up to any animal or person she sees to check them out, and then goes about her business as if nothing caught her eye. She’ll then crawl into her box heaven that we built for her and stalk the world, her tail swaying to and fro waiting for the perfect moment…to attack a peice of paper!!

Independent, curious to a fault, and always on the stalk, Celeste is more than just a Kitty of the Day… she’s our kitty forever.

The Most Laid Back Doggie of the “YEAR” for March 8th

Tyson, the Dog of the Day
Name: Tyson
Age: Four years old
Gender: Male Breed: Golden Retriever
Home: Delaware, USA
Our dog Tyson is a big boy, he weighs 120 pounds! Some people think he is half horse. He acts like the biggest baby, though. He came into our home to join our female golden and they are great friends now. We know he does need to lose some weight, but in general he is a very large-boned dog for his breed!

Tyson loves carrying bones around; he can’t go in or out of the house without his bone. He loves attention and can’t stand it when he’s not getting any. He is such a wonderful dog with a great personality. He has brought so much joy into our home.

He loves to come and put his head on your lap and his paw on your leg. He does know how to ‘shake’ especially if you have a treat for him. If he gets mad at us he gives us ‘dirty looks’, He has a stubborn personality sometimes. He is also very playful with his sister, our other golden retriever Dixie. He really enjoys going to the dog park, too. His sense of smell is incredible! We love him so much and are so happy that he came into our lives.

Breaking Ground With Other Faiths

Breaking Ground With Other Faiths

Author: Draconis Wierinsan Kinthasil

I was working on my garden the other day, we had turned the soil over last week and I saw the small lumps of dirt that the Rota tiller had left behind. It reminded me of what we must do as Pagans.

Out in the larger world are folks who have different beliefs. Sometimes they think that we are bad people or do bad things because of what they think we belief. This is what I call breaking ground; they need to know that they may be wrong on a number of points. I’m not saying you should preach at them but explain to them that you think differently. The better folks (like a Catholic Friend of mine who was Wiccan for a while) will listen to your thoughts on your beliefs with an open mind.

Other times they might pretend to be listening so that they can jump down your throat with the whole “You will burn in Hell Witch!” bit. Thank the Gods I haven’t met these sort (yet) . And the rest will be the kind who will ask the stupid “If you’re a Witch where is your black hat and broom and why are you out when it isn’t Halloween?”

The thing is some of the time most folks just don’t give a horse’s rump how you believe. If you aren’t a Christian you must be converted. I saw the article on Witchvox about most folks not wanting to vote for a person who is Pagan for President. Well la de da! This is a free country (or at least is supposed to be!) and I’m Pagan and I think that it is time for a change.

I will run for President in 2024, won’t that make headlines! “Disabled Pagan for President” I can hear the churches ranting now.

Well I’m sorry that this country is so messed up but maybe if we would stop building a bridge to nowhere and sending food and clothes to foreign countries when we can’t even feed our own people maybe we could improve our country. Sorry a little off topic but look at it this way. If every Pagan, Christian, Muslim, Jew, Hindu, Buddhist, Atheist and everybody else would just give five bucks then think what we would have.

That’s the point of this article, Pagans: When you hear the “Devil Worshipper” crap. Be the bigger man! Walk away.

Christians remember the Golden rule I quote “And as ye would that men should do to you, do ye also to them likewise.” King James Version Holy Bible. To Muslims remember always to keep an open mind and that goes for the rest of you too! United shall we stand, divided we fall, Alone will we break, together we are unbreakable.

If we spent half the time we spend on fighting over whose way is better on loving our neighbor and practicing what we preach, then think how much better off we would be. If we would look for the things that tie us together instead of tearing each other apart we could see that we are more alike then we think.

My vision for all faiths is that one day you will see a father take his kids outside to cast a circle at the White house and as folks go by they say “Good Morning, Mr. President” as he communes with his Gods. Then he stands up and sweeps his hair out of his eyes, pats the pentacle pinned to his lapel and goes to work in the Oval Office. As he greets people he will say “Blessed Be Brother/Sister” as he goes about his day for all Americans are his family.

Then at the end of the day he goes to a ritual with his son who is a mirror image of his father and teaches him the old ways. And on Monday nights they go to Boy scouts and a Pagan father stands proud as his son earns his religious emblem along with everybody else and the boys ask the Pagan scout What the silver pentacle on the red, white, and blue ribbon means and the Pagan scout smiles and explains the meaning of his emblem, that is so much simpler and for that reason so much more meaningful.

And when he tucks his son in that night he says “Sleep well my son, may Sabdh cradle you in her arms this night and Wierin guard you as you sleep” and the boy smiles and replies “Goddess bless, Daddy.”

The President smiles and says “Goddess Bless son sleep well” and turns on the crescent moon nightlight and goes to bed and he and his wife curl up to sleep. As he drifts off his last words are “Now as I lay down to sleep I pray the Gods my soul to keep and should I pass before I wake To Summerland my soul shall take” and he smiles and drops off.

I would sure like to see the meanness and hatred that people throw at each other become a thing of the past and that religious labels like Pagan and Christian become terms of respect and are not spoken like a curse.

I know this may never come to pass in my lifetime but if we young people of all faiths don’t work to find some common ground then I predict a time not so far away when this, the greatest country in the world becomes a theocracy and that the government dispenses with the bit about “no law establishing religion or preventing the free exercise of” and makes on faith supreme to the exclusion of all others.

Please in The Stag-Lord’s name join me in working against this terrible vision! Let us not return to The Burning Times! Let us as Americans — not as Pagans or Christians but as Americans, as members of the human race — work together. Think of what we can do if we learn from each other and treat each other with respect.

In this regard let go of those prejudices that you have. Stop hating someone because they are different or because of their skin color! We are all the children of the Gods. We are not different races! We are all of us members of the human race. The only difference is that in Their wisdom the Gods made us different. For if we were all the same we would all think, feel and believe the same way.

You wouldn’t need to ask an opinion because you would already know the answer. Fat chance of that ever happening.

Kozy Kitten of the Day for March 6th

Age: Five years old
Gender: Male
Kind: Orange Tabby
Home: Gloversville, New York, USA
This is Chuck. He loves sleeping in high places, and also trying to eat my food. He shares his home with his two sisters Inky and Flower, so he is outnumbered by the girls! He greets you at the door when you get home and walks us to the door when we go to leave. He loves to drink from the sink, until his sisters realize what he is doing and they push him out of the way. When he’s not following us around, he likes to hang out on top of my boyfriend’s bookcase.

He loves to play in bags and boxes and we cut holes in the boxes because he likes to stick his paw through the hole to attack his sisters!!! He is the sweetest cat ever!

Precious Pup of the Day for March 6th

Hexi, the Dog of the Day
Name: Hexi
Age: Two years old
Gender: Female Breed: Doberman Pinscher
Home: Chippewa Falls, Wisconsin, USA
When I was just a little girl I was visiting with my Great Auntie Barb and Great Uncle Gene. They had Dobermans and I just loved them. I grew up with one named Hexe. She was a beautiful black and rust. When I was about five years old I promised my Great Uncle Gene that when I grew up I would have a pretty Doberman just like his Hexe and I would name my girl Hexi too. My uncle passed away just three weeks after my 6th birthday. I miss him dearly. When I turned ten, his Hexe passed away. I never ever forgot that promise I made to him.

Well on Feb. 13th, 2010 I brought home my first Doberman girl. I named her Diesel’s B&G Hexi Promise. Hexi’s dad’s name was Diesel, and just seven months before I got Hexi my pitbull named Diesel passed away and I know that he meant for me to bring this girl in my life to help me heal from losing him. So that’s where the name Diesel comes in to play with her registered name. The B&G of course stands for Barb and Gene my great auntie and uncle. Then Hexi is after his Hexe. I just decided to put the I at the end instead of the e. And then Promise is for the promise I made to him all those years ago.

My sweet Hexi is nearly perfect in my eyes. She makes a great companion. She is on her way to taking her CGC(canine good citizen) test so I can take her into nursing homes and around special needs children. As of right now, she helps me with my PTSD. She is a clown, I couldn’t ask for much more. She is cross-eyed which isn’t something you see often in dogs. The vets said it should go away and they said that when she was a pup and she still has it. I think it adds to her charater. She is just a joy to be around. She likes to lick everything … yep, everything. Windows, floors, people, the bed, my other dog, you name it. She is very, very affectionate.

When I was looking at getting one I remember people telling me that Dobermans are well known for being Velcro dogs and very vocal both of which my Hexi is. She doesn’t really have a favorite treat, she will eat just about anything you offer her. She is very smart, too. We have taught her to do high fives, it’s funny. She doesn’t swim if the water is deep, she panics. Generally she goes ’til it touches her chest and out she comes. We bought a life jacket for her for when she goes on the pontoon with us. She loves back massages, and she will put her foot in your lap for you to rub. What can I say, she is pampered.

She also doesn’t handle the cold in Wisconsin very well so we bought her boots and a couple of sweat shirts and even a winter jacket. She doesn’t mind us putting them on her. We often joke about it because we have never seen anybody dress their big dogs up like we do. She enjoys when we buy her new collars either. She shows them off as if she were a model. She very much enjoys being in the spotlight and loves her photos taken – she poses often. If we have her out running in the fields and she sees me get my camera out she will sometimes stop and pose and then go on with her playing. She is 82.5 pounds of baby. I don’t think she knows just how big she really is.

She is the best dog in the whole world 🙂

Butt! Butt! Butt! Oh, My Aching Head, Pet of the Day for March 6th

Whitey, Bully, the Pet of the Day
Name: Whitey, Bully
Age: Six years old
Gender: Female
Kind: Pygmy goats
Home: Snow Camp, North Carolina, USA
These are my two girl Pygmy goats, the white one is Whitey and the gray and white is Bully. Also I have a boy named Rambo and he is black and white.

I’ve had these goats for six years and I got them at two months old. Before I got them, I had two girls who lived twelve years. Goats love to play and butt each other; one goat would be very lonely. Therefore, if anyone wants “a goat”, be sure to get at least two. Get only girls (or girls and neutered boy). I have Rambo because I thought I might let them have babies but haven’t done that yet. It is common for a goat to have two or three babies. I’ve read that male and female goats can breed by three months old so unless you want a big family do not let them be together unless the boy goat is neutered.

My goats love to jump on tables and climb things. When they were little, Whitey would jump on a table and then jump on top of the goat house. Bully girl has shorter legs than Whitey and she cannot jump as high. A few times I was bent over and one of them jumped on my back which scared me, LOL. I learned not to turn my back on them.

They are fed twice a day with hay and goat chow and have water of course and they also eat grass in their pasture. I also have a salt block for them but they don’t like it as much as my previous goats. Some people say goats will eat anything; that’s not entirely true. They can be picky. They like “junk” food such as brush and vines and they cleaned up a messy area I had in the field. They will often forego good pasture grass for tree bark or a vine. Their hooves need to be trimmed twice a year. My goats are in a very secure fence six feet high with small heavy square wire and I don’t think any animal can get in or out … but to be safe I have vet give them rabies shots and also give them worm medicine.

Their favorite treat is dried apple peelings which they get once in a while. Oh, yes, and they like to eat tomato plants. We found that out when we planted some tomato plants too close to the fence; they ate all the leaves. Also they like to eat off the cedar tree. They stand on their hind legs, grab a limb with their front feet, pull it down, and eat.

All in all they are very nice pets and I love them.

Are We a Christian Nation?

Are We a Christian Nation?

Author: Disciple of Oghma

“Whatever we once were, we’re no longer a Christian nation, ” then-candidate Barack Obama said during a June 2007 speech. “At least not just. We are also a Jewish nation, a Muslim nation, and a Buddhist nation, and a Hindu nation, and a nation of nonbelievers.” This speech stirred a great deal of dust in the religious, markedly Christian, circles. Are we a Christian Nation? Well let’s look at the Constitution, the framework for our Great Nation.

In response to widespread sentiment that to survive the United States needed a stronger federal government, a convention met in Philadelphia in the summer of 1787 and on September 17 adopted the Constitution of the United States. Aside from Article VI, which stated that “no religious Test shall ever be required as Qualification” for federal office holders, the Constitution said little about religion. Its reserve troubled two groups of Americans–those who wanted the new instrument of government to give faith a larger role and those who feared that it would do so. This latter group, worried that the Constitution did not prohibit the kind of state-supported religion that had flourished in some colonies, exerted pressure on the members of the First Federal Congress. In September 1789 the Congress adopted the First Amendment to the Constitution, which, when ratified by the required number of states in December 1791, forbade Congress to make any law “respecting an establishment of religion.”

The first two Presidents of the United States were patrons of religion–George Washington was an Episcopal vestryman, and John Adams described himself as “a church going animal.” Both offered strong rhetorical support for religion. In his Farewell Address of September 1796, Washington called religion, as the source of morality, “a necessary spring of popular government, ” while Adams claimed that statesmen “may plan and speculate for Liberty, but it is Religion and Morality alone, which can establish the Principles upon which Freedom can securely stand.”

Many Americans were disappointed that the Constitution did not contain a bill of rights that would explicitly enumerate the rights of American citizens and enable courts and public opinion to protect these rights from an oppressive government. Supporters of a bill of rights permitted the Constitution to be adopted with the understanding that the first Congress under the new government would attempt to add a bill of rights. James Madison took the lead in steering such a bill through the First Federal Congress, which convened in the spring of 1789. The Virginia Ratifying Convention and Madison’s constituents, among whom were large numbers of Baptists who wanted freedom of religion secured, expected him to push for a bill of rights.

On September 28, 1789, both houses of Congress voted to send twelve amendments to the states. In December 1791, those ratified by the requisite three fourths of the states became the first ten amendments to the Constitution. Religion was addressed in the First Amendment in the following familiar words: “Congress shall make no law respecting an establishment of religion, or prohibiting the free exercise thereof.” In notes for his June 8, 1789, speech introducing the Bill of Rights, Madison indicated his opposition to a “national” religion. Most Americans agreed that the federal government must not pick out one religion and give it exclusive financial and legal support.

Thomas Jefferson and James Madison, the third and fourth presidents were less hospitable toward religion than their predecessors. Thomas Jefferson, in fact, was fiercely anti-church. In a letter to Horatio Spafford in 1814, Jefferson said, “In every country and every age, the priest has been hostile to liberty. He is always in alliance with the despot, abetting his abuses in return for protection to his own. It is easier to acquire wealth and power by this combination than by deserving them, and to effect this, they have perverted the purest religion ever preached to man into mystery and jargon, unintelligible to all mankind, and therefore the safer for their purposes” (George Seldes, The Great Quotations, Secaucus, New Jersey Citadel Press, 1983, p. 371) . In a letter to Mrs. Harrison Smith, he wrote, “It is in our lives, and not from our words, that our religion must be read. By the same test the world must judge me. But this does not satisfy the priesthood. They must have a positive, a declared assent to all their interested absurdities. My opinion is that there would never have been an infidel, if there had never been a priest” (August 6, 1816) .

James Madison, Jefferson’s close friend and political ally, was just as vigorously opposed to religious intrusions into civil affairs as Jefferson was. In 1785, when the Commonwealth of Virginia was considering passage of a bill “establishing a provision for Teachers of the Christian Religion, ” Madison wrote his famous “Memorial and Remonstrance Against Religious Assessments” in which he presented fifteen reasons why government should not be come involved in the support of any religion. This paper, long considered a landmark document in political philosophy, was also cited in the majority opinion in Lee vs. Weisman.

The views of Madison and Jefferson prevailed in the Virginia Assembly, and in 1786, the Assembly adopted the statute of religious freedom of which Jefferson and Madison were the principal architects. The preamble to this bill said that “to compel a man to furnish contributions of money for the propagation of opinions which he disbelieves is sinful and tyrannical.” The statute itself was much more specific than the establishment clause of the U. S. Constitution “Be it therefore enacted by the General Assembly, That no man shall be compelled to frequent or support any religious worship, place or ministry whatsoever, nor shall be enforced, restrained, molested, or burdened in his body or goods, nor shall otherwise suffer on account of his religious opinions or belief; but that all men shall be free to profess, and by argument to maintain, their opinions in matters of religion, and that the same shall in nowise [sic] diminish, enlarge, or affect their civil capacities”.

Realizing that whatever legislation an elected assembly passed can be later repealed, Jefferson ended the statute with a statement of contempt for any legislative body that would be so presumptuous “And though we well know this Assembly, elected by the people for the ordinary purposes of legislation only, have no power to restrain the acts of succeeding assemblies, constituted with the powers equal to our own, and that therefore to declare this act irrevocable, would be of no effect in law, yet we are free to declare, and do declare, that the rights hereby asserted are of the natural rights of mankind, and that if any act shall be hereafter passed to repeal the present or to narrow its operation, such act will be an infringement of natural right” (emphasis added) .

On Final note; Signed and sealed at Algiers, January 1797, America made a treaty with Tripoli. In article 11 of that Treaty declares that “the government of the United States is not, in any sense, founded on the Christian religion; as it has in itself no character of enmity against the laws, religion, or tranquility, of Mussulmen; and, as the said States never entered into any war, or act of hostility against any Mahometan nation, it is declared by the parties, that no pretext arising from religious opinions, shall ever produce an interruption of the harmony existing between the two countries.” This reassurance to Islam was written under Washington’s presidency, and approved by the Senate under John Adams.

I have come to the determination that we are neither a Christian Nation, nor are we an Anti-Christian Nation. In the architecture of the Constitution, the founding fathers made safeguards to ensure the free growth of personal religious freedoms by basing the nation’s framework on a secular foundation. In this way the rights and responsibilities of the people shall neither be shaped nor suspended by the popular religious Idea of the day. Ensuring the stability and nurturing the potential of our Great Nation. So while Christianity may be a largely accepted, popular, mainstream faith it is not the established faith of this nation. Therefore we are not a Christian Nation, but a nation of People.

‘THINK on THESE THINGS’

‘THINK on THESE THINGS’

So you missed an opportunity! And they say that opportunity knocks only once – but, only if you believe it! Opportunity has been known to pound on the door and go unnoticed, and it has been known to whisper and be heard. It is all according to how hard we require opportunity to knock before we recognize it.

Our awareness of opportunity will reveal to us how many times it presents itself; so subtle, it may not be recognized by the casual eye. And usually it seems to be completely unprofitable to us personally. More often than not it is service to others without thought of return. It is humility, a willingness to accept the most humble beginnings. It is joy in finding communication with others and finding a kinship with them.

Have you heard of an opportunity fund? Some call it saving for a rainy day. Rainy days can be lovely, too. A rainy day can be an opportunity to get things done. But an opportunity can be any day, rain or shine.

Do you often have the opportunity to speak to your neighbor? It seems to happen too infrequently these days.

The most fun we can have comes when we’ve the opportunity to squelch an ugly rumor. You know, “curst be the tongue whence slanderous rumor, withering friendship’s faith….” Sometimes a little friendship does wither, but if it really amounts to anything it will survive.

What a splendid opportunity to sit quietly and mentally forgive with such depth and joy as to start life anew. There is no greater blessing, no greater opportunity fund.

American editor A.E. Dunning writes, “Great opportunity come to all, but many do not know they have met them. The only preparation to take advantage of them, is simple fidelity to what each day brings.”

A missed opportunity may well be another opportunity to prepare for a bigger and better one!

Kozy Kitten of the Day for March 5th

Cookie, the Cat of the Day
Name: Cookie
Age: Three years old
Gender: Male
Kind: Domestic shorthair
Home: Newnan, Georgia, USA
About three and a half years ago, a small, kinda rough-looking little Tuxedo cat appeared in my neighborhood- my roommate and I named her Sophie. Sophie was almost completely feral, wouldn’t let people get near her, but she was very appreciative of the food and fresh water we put out. And, in due course, around late March 2008, Sophie produced a litter of two tiny kittens – a larger black-and-white guy whom you see here, by the name of Cookie, and a much tinier little girl-cat sister, all black except for two

white spots on her chest, whom we named Mookie.

Cookie, even outside as a ‘feral’ kitten, was a sweetheart, you could tell. His Mom would be showing him how to stalk something and he’d lose it in mid-stalk, just get too carried away with being a kitten, and start rolling around on the lawn, while Sophie glared at him. And when we caught him and his little sister, they got nothing but sweeter. (Incidentally, Sophie and all her other kittens, as well as most of her boyfriends, were alleventually caught, fixed, vaccinated and found loving homes.)

Mookie has stayed a petite little girl-kitten, over the last three years- but Cookie grew! Cookie is now a very handsome eighteen-pounder of a tomcat, a big huge bundle of love- his mostly-symmetrical markings make him very handsome, and the crowning touch is the tiny black spot on his white nose and a tiny white firefly tip on his black tail. He’s still a totally friendly, affectionate guy, for being born “feral”- in fact he’s purring in my lap as I write this. We’re very glad Cookie allowed himself to be captured and ‘domesticated’- and he survived the relocation to Georgia from New Jersey without incident. He’s still buds with all the rest of the members of the Pride. One photo shows him sharing a window-seat with Birdie, another, presumably-unrelated feral tuxedo-cat we caught. We hope he stays with us for many, many years to come.

He and I have “cuddle time” every morning when I check Cat of the Day and other sites- he curls in my lap and purrs and kneads and nuzzles- it’s a daily ritual. We’ve always thought he was especially handsome, and really ought to be in commercials or something – he’s smart enough to train, and he’s a beautiful boy, to be sure.

Precious Pup of the Day for March 5th

McCarty, the Dog of the Day
Name: McCarty
Age: Two and a half years old
Gender: Male Breed: Dachshund mix
Home: Ashland, Virginia, USA
This is my baby boy McCarty. He is named after a Detroit Red Wings Hockey player. McCarty is a Dachshund/Chihuahua/Jack Russell mix. He looks like a dachshund. He is tan in color with white under his neck, nose and tip of his tail.

He has a very human like nature. He loves his mom and whines like a baby every time I leave. He knows the words “car”, “go”, “ride” and any signs of me leaving such as putting on my shoes, grabbing the car keys or purse. I usually have to spell out the words if I am getting ready to leave the house so he won’t get upset. He loves to cuddle with me in bed every night just like a person; under the covers and head on the pillow. He follows me from room to room to get my attention. He loves to play with toys that have squeakers and anything that has stuffing. Once the squeakers and stuffing are out, I just add the remains to his toy basket that is full of destroyed toys.

I got McCarty at nine weeks old and he is two and a half now and weighs a whopping seventeen pounds. I think mommy needs to cut down on the treats a little! McCarty is everything I need to keep me company and is loved so very much!
