A Little Humor for Your Day – ‘Problem At Other End’

Problem At Other End

One of Microsoft’s finest technicans was drafted and sent to boot camp. At the rifle range, he was given some instruction, a rifle, and bullets. He fired several shots at the target. The report came from the target area that all attempts had completely missed the target.
The technician looked at his rifle, and then at the target. He looked at the rifle again, and then at the target again. He put his finger over the end of the rifle barrel and squeezed the trigger with his other hand. The end of his finger was blown off, whereupon he yelled toward the target area, “It’s leaving here just fine, the trouble must be at your end!”

Celebrating Other Spirituality 365 Days A Year – Crabapple Fair

Crabapple Fair

Held annually in Egremont since it was chartered in 1267, the Crabapple Fair is one of Britain’s oldest festivals. It is famous for a number of traditions, including the distribution of free crabapples from a lorry that tours the village soon after noon. In recent years, common eating apples have been thrown to the crowds instead of the formerly used wild crabs.

The fair begins at dawn, when a 30-foot-high greased pole is erected in the main street of town. In the past, the prize for anyone who could scale the pole (which is impossible without the help of a human ladder) was half a sheep’s carcass at the top. Today, climbers work for a pound note instead. Other morning activities include children’s games, a scrimmage for coppers, and street races.

In the afternoon, there are more games, wrestling and terrier racing. The most unique events take place in the evening. The first competition is a pipe-smoking contest to see who can keep a pipe burning longest without relighting. There is a contest for the best sentimental and best hunting songs. The main attraction is the World Champion Gurning Competition. This odd (and very old) competition involves putting one’s head through a horse collar and making the most grotesque face possible. The championship is usually won by the individual who can take out his teeth and curl his lower lip upwards touching the nose.

bw-elhazYour Rune For Today

Elhaz

Elhaz represents your power to protect yourself and those around you. It also connotes the thrill and joy of a successful hunt. You are in a very enviable position right now, because you are able to maintain what you have built and reach your current goals. Enjoy.

Your Daily Horoscopes for Thursday, October 17th

We may believe that nearly anything is possible today, but we could run into a host of problems along our path. Although the enterprising Aries Moon encourages us to act on our intuition, there are unforeseen bumps in the road, anyhow. The Moon’s alignments with domineering Pluto and disruptive Uranus indicate complex emotional entanglements that can delay gratification. We might still feel dissatisfied even if we ultimately get what we want.

Aries Horoscope

(Mar 21 – Apr 19)

It could feel as if your whole life is renewing itself and you are quite eager to embrace the future. Your enthusiasm may get you started on your path but, unfortunately, it won’t be enough to ensure that you reach your destination. But dreaming about it is just the first step; you need to walk your talk to make things happen. Add a dose of determination, though, and you just might accomplish the goals you are now setting.

Taurus Horoscope

(Apr 20 – May 20)

Someone may ask more of you than you can give today, which tempts you to go into hiding to avoid confrontation. It’s crucial, though, to meet the current challenges head on without ignoring the role your consistency plays in keeping everyone else on track. The good news is that you don’t have to carry the whole burden upon your shoulders. Others are more than happy to pitch in and help when you need it.

Gemini Horoscope

(May 21 – Jun 20)

You’re more productive today if you can be part of a group, rather than having to work by yourself. Paradoxically, you may also feel relief when you are finally alone. Acknowledge the conflict between your need to connect with others and the more subtle benefits you receive from solitude. Don’t choose one over the other; allocate time for both

Cancer Horoscope

(Jun 21 – Jul 22)

Your tendency to care for others may stand in the way of your own personal ambitions today. Paying close attention to what each person requires at work could clear a path for you to become a star, even if you merely play a supporting role. Don’t be concerned about temporarily losing sight of your own goals; they will still be there when you finish with your current obligations. Your willingness to nurture others casts you in a favorable light.

Leo Horoscope

(Jul 23 – Aug 22)

Keeping your mind focused on your immediate tasks is a challenge today, especially if you are very busy. Your confidence continues to grow and your daydreams might even be work-related. Unfortunately, they won’t likely make you any more efficient on the job. Still, as you contemplate how to escape current responsibilities, remember that your increased effort now should provide you with greater freedom later on

Virgo Horoscope

(Aug 23 – Sep 22)

You like the idea of doing something different at work today or even enrolling in a whole new course of study. You might want to consider a field that allows you to discover hidden mysteries or explore uncharted relationship dynamics. Don’t worry about applying your current interest to your career. This is more about personal growth and the immediate connection to your job may not be apparent at this time. Follow your bliss and see where it leads.

Libra Horoscope

(Sep 23 – Oct 22)

Everyone seems to stir up too much unneeded excitement in your life now by offering you one too many points of view. Although this information may not support your old perspective, you are eager to see where it takes you. A bit of common sense goes a long way today. Don’t change your mind too quickly; instead allow the transition to unfold at its own pace.

Scorpio Horoscope

(Oct 23 – Nov 21)

You bring a renewed vigor to your job and are anticipating what you can tackle at work today. You feel refreshed, as if your emotional batteries have been recharged. But don’t let your enthusiasm run off with all your good intentions. Be careful, for apologies might not be enough to undo a broken promise if you overcommit your time. Make the most of your momentum while you have the chance to gain real progress.

Sagittarius Horoscope

(Nov 22 – Dec 21)

Although it’s a work day for many, you are already dreaming about the weekend. Unfortunately, you probably have too much to do, even before adding recreational activities to your hectic calendar. In this same situation others might decline a social engagement, but not you. Somehow you think you’ll find the time and energy to fit it all in. Stop and get some much-needed rest; remember it’s not healthy to burn the candle at both ends.

Capricorn Horoscope

(Dec 22 – Jan 19)

Consider your ideas twice before you just blurt out what you’re thinking since impulsive expressions complicate nearly any situation today. You may not actually mean what you say; it’s just your way of blowing off pent-up feelings. But someone could interpret your words more seriously than you intend. If it’s really important, you might be better off waiting a few days until you’ve taken time to solidify your position and develop your plan.

Aquarius Horoscope

(Jan 20 – Feb 18)

A heightened pace of activities, along with the many distractions and disruptions that come your way, doesn’t make your life any easier to manage today. You needn’t be afraid of taking a stand and establishing territorial limits. Normally, you might prefer to go along with the changes throughout the day, but now you gain more by remaining grounded and focused. Establish clear priorities and keep calm no matter what happens.

Pisces Horoscope

(Feb 19 – Mar 20)

Your life could settle down enough now to get your personal responsibilities under control. Perhaps you’ve been remiss in meeting your obligations, but today you are driven by more practical concerns. Forget the idle fantasies and sentimental journeys. Taking direct action — not dreaming about it — will bring you face to face with the happiness you seek.

This kind of charge makes more of the world accessible to anyone ambitious enough to seize the Chariot’s reins. But there is danger in this feeling of freedom, because of the increased rate of change and its power to magnify mistakes in judgment. Element: Earth
Altar: Upon cloth of black set many knives laid end to end in a pathway, crossed with a single spear. Set also a chalice of mead and seven black candles.)
Offerings: Blood.
Daily Meal: Meat.

Invocation to Mordgud

Hail, Mordgud, Gatekeeper of the Dark Road,
Helvegr’s watchwoman, never sleeping,
Your dark eyes watch always the oncoming road
For the lost soul who must be rescued,
Wandering in the dark with no hope
Of being gathered to Hela’s peaceful breast.
Hail, Right Hand of Hel, Warrior who protects the Way
From those who would plunder the wisdom
Of the slumbering Dead, who would raid
The secrets of the Underworld,
From those who would wreak their doom
In foolishness before their time,
All these you turn away with upraised hand,
Though fools may not understand
The kindness that you do them.
Hail, Guardian of Hel’s Gate,
Whose eyes see the Dead, in all their forms,
Weeping, sleeping, bewildered and fearful,
Laughing with open arms,
All are ushered through your Gate
With your exquisite compassion and comfort
For you leave none behind.
By the Dark Road of Stars, we hail you, Lady of the Last Gate!
By the roaring river Gjoll, we hail you, Mistress of the Last Spear!
By the gold-roofed bridge, we hail you, Mistress of the Black Tower!
By the passage of knives, we hail you, Mistress of the Knife’s Way!
May you welcome us in our hour of need.

(All come forth and prick their fingers, and wipe the blood on the tip of Mordgud’s spear, saying, “Welcome me in my time through the last gate.” The mead is poured out as libation.)

Festival of the Penates

The Penates were Roman Gods of the store-cupboard and protectors of the household along with the Lares. They were the guardians of the pantry, and small statues of them were place along with those of the Lares, within each household. They were worshipped along with Vesta (Goddess of the hearth). Just as with the Lares, a portion of food from every family meal was set aside for them or tossed onto the hearth fire as a small offering for their continued protection. The festival held for them on this day was a state affair and was held in honor of the Roman Penates Publici–the Penates that presided over the city

Daily OM for October 10th – Whale Medicine

Whale Medicine

Spirit of the Sea

by Madisyn Taylor

Like the whales each of us has a unique song or gift to offer the world as is meant to be heard by others.

Native Americans teach us that the Great Spirit speaks to us through our animal brethren. The whale is one animal that we can learn from. Whales have existed for over 50 million years and are considered to be record-keepers who possess knowledge of the past.

It is through the vibrations of their unique sound that they release this ancient wisdom to us. At the same time, their sound carries across such great distances that whales can enter the realm of the future where they can acquire knowledge of what is to come. Every whale sings a song, and they never repeat the same pattern when they sing their song. Since whales must be conscious at all times in order to breathe, they cannot afford to fall into an unconscious state for too long. Never completely asleep, their brain has constant access to the collective unconscious where all answers lie. Whales float peacefully, secure in the ocean environment that supports and sustains them.

You can learn from the wisdom of whales by remembering to express what’s uniquely yours. Each of us has a unique “song or gift to offer the world. Your song is meant to be sung by you and heard by others. No one else can sing this song but you, and your song is medicine for the healing of the planet. Like whales, you can choose to access information about the future when you go into a meditative state. Whales teach us to look at where we came from and where we are headed. Knowing that our past helps shape our future, we can remember to make positive choices regarding our lives, the environment, and our world. Like whales, we can remember to stay awake and actively engaged in a universe that supports and sustains us. When we express ourselves and share our unique gifts, we add our wisdom and vibration to the planet.

Day of Tuonela

Color: Black
Element: Earth
Altar: Upon cloth of black lay five black candles, a tankard of beer and a tankard of river-water, and many figures of toads, frogs, and serpents.
Offerings: Fears
Daily Meal: Poultry.

Tuonela Invocation

(One who has been chosen to do the work of the ritual steps forward with the tankard of beer, raises it, and says:)
Hail to the Island of the Dead!
Hail to the Land of Tuonela!
Hail to Lord Tuoni, who waits at the center!
Hail to Lady Tuonetar, who waits at the hearth!
Hail to Surma who guards the borders,
Along the river with its rushing waters
And its black swans, the harbingers of Death!
Hail to Kalma who brings plague,
May she forever pass us by!
Vanamoinen came to your shores
Searching for words of power,
But found all words silent in the Land of Death.
He was served beer laden with frogs and serpents,
Which were only the fears that he brought
Unbidden to the hearth of Tuonela!
Will you drink now of your fears,
And leave them in the Deathlands?

(They carry the tankard about, and folk may drink of their fears, if they feel that now is a good time to face them, or they may refuse. Then another steps forward with the tankard of river-water, lifts it high, and says:)
Will you drink, then, of the River of Death?
If it is not time for fears, will you face loss?
Or, if you are brave, will you take both
And so honor the Gods with your courage?

(They carry the tankard about, and those who have not drunk of the beer must drink of the water, although some may choose to have both. The remaining beer and water are poured out as a libation to Tuonela.)

Kermesse

This unique festival dates back to 15th-century Germany. Traditionally, this weeklong celebration focused on the digging up of an effigy that had been buried the year before. The object was ritually unearthed and then mounted on a brightly decorated pole that was paraded through the streets to announce the beginning of the festival. The opening procession was followed by a week of games, feasting, and dancing. At the end of the festival, the participants would dress up in their mourning attire and rebury the effigy in its grave, where it would remain until the next Kermesse.

Halloween Costumes for the Zodiac

Halloween Costumes for the Zodiac

Spooky, sexy or silly? Astrology reveals your sign’s best costume

Jeff Kishner   Jeff Kishner on the topics of halloween, astrology

A person’s Sun sign often reflects their inner hopes and dreams. Halloween costumes are an exciting opportunity to bring these fantasy lives to the surface.

Some say the veil to the otherworld is lifted this time of year, so not only can you tap into your insight more easily with a Tarot reading, but you can have a little fun role playing, too.

If you’re stuck for Halloween costume ideas, check out the list below. It could provide you with the perfect outfit to express your inner demons!

Aries (March 21 – April 19)

Your sign is ruled by Mars, the warrior of the zodiac. Dress up as a gladiator or a luchador (a Mexican wrestler). Aries is also the sign of courage, so a police officer, firefighter or military officer uniform would help you express your inner Ram. Superhero costumes are also popular this year, and bold Aries is perfectly suited to take on Superman, Batman or Iron Man.

Taurus (April 20 – May 20)

Your sign is known for earthy beauty, from sensuous curves to brawny muscles. Dress up as Miss America, who made a huge splash this year, or Mr. Universe to show off what you’ve got. You can also dress up as Poison Ivy or a walking tree to channel the Bull’s love for green pastures. Taurus also loves to indulge, so don’t hesitate to dress yourself up like a sweet cupcake!

Gemini (May 21 – June 20)

What better way to dress up than to be Siamese Twins with your best bud or girlfriend? You can literally be joined at the hip! You could also go as famous real-life Twins, such as Mary-Kate and Ashley Olsen. Or a famous real-life Gemini, Angelina Jolie. Gemini is also an androgynous sign, so be a half-man/half-woman creature … or just go in drag!

Cancer (June 21 – July 22)

Your sentimental sign loves the homeland, so express your patriotism as the Statue of Liberty, Uncle Sam or America’s true ancestor, a Native American. Cancer also loves food, so dress up as an oversized banana or a milk carton. You can also pay tribute by dressing up as real-life Cancer Princess Diana, or embrace your sign’s nurturing instincts to dress as a famous mom, like Carol Brady or Octomom!

Leo (July 23 – Aug. 22)

What better way to channel your sign’s mascot than as the Lion from The Wizard of Oz, or in a sexy cat costume? And of course, glamorous Leo rules over royalty and stars, so dress up as a king, queen or just wear tons of gold. Or go as an A-list celebrity or movie star, like Marilyn Monroe or Elvis.

Virgo (Aug. 23 – Sept. 22)

This perfectionistic, word-loving sign can express its erotic earthiness as a sexy librarian. Virgo is also associated with Demeter, the grain goddess … so a chaff of wheat may be right up your alley. Virgo is a great pet lover, so you could dress up as an animal — a cat or dog or even a fox costume, which are selling out this year. Or go as a classic Virgo good-girl, like Dorothy from the Wizard of Oz — and don’t forget her pet, Toto!

Libra (Sept. 23 – Oct. 22)

What better way to bring balance to this holiday than to dress up as Justice? A scale in each hand would help you make sure everyone gets their equal share of candy, especially if you’re dressed up as Judge Judy. Or put on your best threads and say you’re a fashion guru or interior designer. Libra is also the sign that most loves to shop, so dress up as a shopoholic with tons of boxes and bags and you’ll feel right at home.

Scorpio (Oct. 23 – Nov. 21)

Your sign is the private investigator of the zodiac, so you may want to dress up as Sherlock Holmes, Nancy Drew or Inspector Gadget. Scorpio also rules the underworld — so going all-out as your favorite Mafioso will do, whether it’s Tony Soprano or Al Capone. Scorpio is also perfect for so many dark, creepy Halloween costumes — the Grim Reaper, Darth Vader and the Devil will do. Or you could be a zombie prom queen, a skeleton or a corpse bride!

Sagittarius (Nov. 22 – Dec. 21)

The adventurer of the zodiac may want to dress up as Indiana Jones or Lara Croft. Sagittarians also love to make people laugh, so donning a clown costume or the silliest outfit you can find will be good for a few chuckles. The sign of the Archer is also perfectly suited to play a huntress from The Hunger Games, like Katniss Everdeen — just don’t forget your bow!

Capricorn (Dec. 22 – Jan. 19)

The businessman of the zodiac may want to put on a power suit and a funny hairpiece to look like Donald Trump. Strong women, such as Hillary Clinton or Joan of Ark, are also well-suited to your sign. Capricorn also excels at building, so a construction worker’s outfit — make sure you wear a helmet — will help you blast through any crowd. You could also be a superhero, as Capricorn is known for its nearly superhuman strength of character!

Aquarius (Jan. 20 – Feb. 18)

Aquarius rules outer space, so what better way to celebrate Halloween than as an astronaut … or a space alien? Dress up as a scientist in a lab coat and taped glasses to channel this sign’s intellectual bent, or put on fake tattoos and piercings to show your inner rebel. Robots, like in Dr. Who or Star Wars — think R2D2 and C3P0 — are perfect for your quirky sign!

Pisces (Feb. 19 – March 20)

Your sign’s ruling planet, Neptune, commands the sea. Dress up as a mermaid or King of the Sea (carry your trident, or three-pronged spear!). Artistic Pisces would also love to be a ballerina, painter or poet for Halloween. Or wear soft flowing fabrics to be the Muse. Pisces is also known as the most psychic sign of the zodiac, so a gypsy fortune teller Halloween costume would be perfect!
