The name Scorpio comes from the Latin name for Scorpion and so is called in Greece and France, while in Spain the sign for October 28 zodiac sign is called Escorpion.

Those born on this day are jealous for no particular reason and very stubborn at times. They are sometimes moody and nothing seems to be going right. They can be quite devious and tricky to handle when they are set to obtain something at any costs.

(One Person’s Point of View c 2013) You Call It Hallowe’en… We Call It Samhain

You Call It Hallowe’en… We Call It Samhain    by Peg Aloi

October 31st, commonly called Hallowe’en, is associated with many customs, some of them mysterious, some light-hearted, some of them downright odd. Why do we bob for apples, carve pumpkins into jack-o-lanterns, and tell ghost stories on this night? Why do children go door-to-door asking for candy, dressed in fantastical costumes? How is Hallowe’en connected to All Soul’s Day, celebrated by some Christian denominations on November 1st? And what is the significance of this holiday for modern-day Witches?

A Brief History of Hallowe’en

Hallowe’en has its origins in the British Isles. While the modern tradition of trick or treat developed in the U. S., it too is based on folk customs brought to this country with Irish immigrants after 1840. Since ancient times in Ireland, Scotland, and England, October 31st has been celebrated as a feast for the dead, and also the day that marks the new year. Mexico observes a Day of the Dead on this day, as do other world cultures. In Scotland, the Gaelic word “Samhain” (pronounced “SAW-win” or “SAW-vane”) means literally “summer’s end.”

Other names for this holiday include: All Hallows Eve (“hallow” means “sanctify”); Hallowtide; Hallowmass; Hallows; The Day of the Dead; All Soul’s Night; All Saints’ Day (both on November 1st).

For early Europeans, this time of the year marked the beginning of the cold, lean months to come; the flocks were brought in from the fields to live in sheds until spring. Some animals were slaughtered, and the meat preserved to provide food for winter. The last gathering of crops was known as “Harvest Home, ” celebrated with fairs and festivals.

In addition to its agriculture significance, the ancient Celts also saw Samhain as a very spiritual time. Because October 31 lies exactly between the Autumnal Equinox and the Winter Solstice, it is theorized that ancient peoples, with their reliance on astrology, thought it was a very potent time for magic and communion with spirits. The “veil between the worlds” of the living and the dead was said to be at its thinnest on this day; so the dead were invited to return to feast with their loved ones; welcomed in from the cold, much as the animals were brought inside. Ancient customs range from placing food out for dead ancestors, to performing rituals for communicating with those who had passed over.

Communion with the dead was thought to be the work of witches and sorcerers, although the common folk thought nothing of it. Because the rise of the Church led to growing suspicion of the pagan ways of country dwellers, Samhain also became associated with witches, black cats (“familiars” or animal friends), bats (night creatures), ghosts and other “spooky” things…the stereotype of the old hag riding the broomstick is simply a caricature; fairy tales have exploited this image for centuries.

Divination of the future was also commonly practiced at this magically-potent time; since it was also the Celtic New Year, people focused on their desires for the coming year. Certain traditions, such as bobbing for apples, roasting nuts in the fire, and baking cakes which contained tokens of luck, are actually ancient methods of telling fortunes.

So What About Those Jack-O-Lanterns?

Other old traditions have survived to this day; lanterns carved out of pumpkins and turnips were used to provide light on a night when huge bonfires were lit, and all households let their fires go out so they could be rekindled from this new fire; this was believed to be good luck for all households. The name “Jack-O-Lantern” means “Jack of the Lantern, ” and comes from an old Irish tale. Jack was a man who could enter neither heaven nor hell and was condemned to wander through the night with only a candle in a turnip for light. Or so goes the legend…

But such folk names were commonly given to nature spirits, like the “Jack in the Green, ” or to plants believed to possess magical properties, like “John O’ Dreams, ” or “Jack in the Pulpit.” Irish fairy lore is full of such references. Since candles placed in hollowed-out pumpkins or turnips (commonly grown for food and abundant at this time of year) would produce flickering flames, especially on cold nights in October, this phenomenon may have led to the association of spirits with the lanterns; and this in turn may have led to the tradition of carving scary faces on them. It is an old legend that candle flames which flicker on Samhain night are being touched by the spirits of dead ancestors, or “ghosts.”

Okay, What about the Candy?

“Trick or treat” as it is practiced in the U. S. is a complex custom believed to derive from several Samhain traditions, as well as being unique to this country. Since Irish immigrants were predominantly Catholic, they were more likely to observe All Soul’s Day. But Ireland’s folk traditions die hard, and the old ways of Samhain were remembered. The old tradition of going door to door asking for donations of money or food for the New Year’s feast, was carried over to the U. S. from the British Isles. Hogmanay was celebrated January 1st in rural Scotland, and there are records of a “trick or treat” type of custom; curses would be invoked on those who did not give generously; while those who did give from their hearts were blessed and praised. Hence, the notion of “trick or treat” was born (although this greeting was not commonly used until the 1930’s in the U. S.). The wearing of costumes is an ancient practice; villagers would dress as ghosts, to escort the spirits of the dead to the outskirts of the town, at the end of the night’s celebration.

By the 1920’s, “trick or treat” became a way of letting off steam for those urban poor living in crowded conditions. Innocent acts of vandalism (soaping windows, etc.) gave way to violent, cruel acts. Organizations like the Boy Scouts tried to organize ways for this holiday to become safe and fun; they started the practice of encouraging “good” children to visit shops and homes asking for treats, so as to prevent criminal acts. These “beggar’s nights” became very popular and have evolved to what we know as Hallowe’en today.

What Do Modern Witches Do at Hallowe’en?

It is an important holiday for us. Witches are diverse, and practice a variety of traditions. Many of us use this time to practice forms of divination (such as tarot or runes). Many Witches also perform rituals to honor the dead; and may invite their deceased loved ones to visit for a time, if they choose. This is not a “seance” in the usual sense of the word; Witches extend an invitation, rather than summoning the dead, and we believe the world of the dead is very close to this one. So on Samhain, and again on Beltane (May 1st), when the veil between the worlds is thin, we attempt to travel between those worlds. This is done through meditation, visualization, and astral projection. Because Witches acknowledge human existence as part of a cycle of life, death and rebirth, Samhain is a time to reflect on our mortality, and to confront our fears of dying.

Some Witches look on Samhain as a time to prepare for the long, dark months of winter, a time of introspection and drawing inward. They may bid goodbye to the summer with one last celebratory rite. They may have harvest feasts, with vegetables and fruits they have grown, or home-brewed cider or mead. They may give thanks for what they have, projecting for abundance through the winter. Still others may celebrate with costume parties, enjoying treats and good times with friends. There are as many ways of observing Samhain as there are Witches in the world!

A simple, fun and colorful ritual to enjoy

For this ritual one should dress brightly and strikingly, wearing flowers and greenery according to taste. A low altar should be built partially or entirely of stones at the middle of the ritual area.

What you will need:

Two candles should be placed on the altar, and the altar itself arranged as usual. (if the ritual is performed outdoors, the candles may be replaced be torches. These may be stuck in the ground on either side of the altar.)

Four candles or torches are placed before the altar to be lit later. A vertical pole about 3 feet in height is usualy erected on the far side of the altar: it should be decked with fruits, flowers, and bright ribbons. A half full cup of wine should be placed before the image of the Goddess.

Before dressing for the ceremony, take a ritual cleansing bath. When ready to go on with the rite, meditate for a while before going into the ritual area, thinking strongly on the old pagan ways and trying to imagine the rituals wich took place on this night in ages passed.

– Go alone to the ritual place. Kneeling before the altar, light the candles or torches on the altar, and the incense. Set alight the four candles before the altar and place them 3 or 5 feet from the altar at the North, then going deosil, saying:

“Here at this spot Do I create a place Sacred to the Gods of old. For a while, here and now Shall the ancient ways Live again”

– Take the wand and hold it out and salute toward the East, saying:

“Oh winds of the East Blow sweet and pure For the Lady reigns again!”

– Hold the wand out and salute toward the South, saying:

“Oh warmth of the South Bring forth life from the earth For the Lady reigns again!”

– Hold the wand out and salute toward the West, saying:

“Oh waters of the West Glisten clear and fresh For the Lady reigns again!”

– Hold the wand out and salute toward the North, saying:

“Oh lands of the North Grow rich and bounteous For the Lady reigns again!”

– Replace the wand and, holding the arms out over the altar, saying:

“Gracious and lovely Lady of the moon, Of joy and love, Protecteress of forests and wild things, This place is consecrated to Thee.”

-Take up the wine cup, holding it out at arm’s lenght, and pour out a few drops, saying:

” To the Great Ones of old And to the joyous times to come!”

-Drink some of the wine (or if you cannot drink alcohol, use an appropriate substitute).

– After a brief pause, rap three times on the altar with the wand saying:

“As woods and meadows flower forth I celebrate the ancient rite As the Ancients did before me. I cast the words into the mists Of time and space and otherwhere: Where one stays now, in years to come, May scores of others revel there. So may it be!”

– Rap once upon the altar. (More incense should be added now. Ad-lib additions are appropriate at this time…meditations, poetry …and the like.) (If a source of proper music is available, a solitary Dance of the Winds may be improvised.)

– Draw the Fertility talisman on the parchment, suffumigate it thrice, then, recite the supplication written on the back, …bow humbly and say:

“Friends of the nether worlds Now, come and assist us in our humble workings. Follow us to another sacred place of ours, And join your forces with ours, On this Fertilization Day.”

– Bury the talisman into the ground under an oak tree (if available), saying an ad-lib statement on the meaning of the talisman and its correspondances.Go back to the circle.

– When all is done, close by rapping four time with the wand, saying:

“Friends of the nether worlds Who have been about me for a while You may, with thanks, Return from whence you came.”

– Hold out arms and say:

“Blessed Lady of joy and laughter I thank Thee for Thy presence. May some of your love and power Remain with me. Blessed Be!”

– Put out the lights about the altar. As the two on the altar itself are darkened, say:

“This rite is ended…”

Note: Alter this ritual as needed to fit your circumstance. Note that many Beltane celebrations extend roughly one week past the May 1’st date, so any time in early May is appropriate to celebrate, in case you miss celebrating it on the May 1’st date.

Encircle a red candle with any protection herb and light the wick. Sit and gaze at the fiery power of the light that shall protect you from harm. When you are ready, you may say this, or another verse:

For protection, I now pray,
Let all evil turn away.
Protect me night,
Protect me day,
And keep misfortune well at bay.

IF YOUR BIRTHDAY IS ON OCTOBER 26, it is likely that you are an emotional individual. You have a tendency to be insecure but you are an intelligent, resilient personality. You have good instincts and are able to “read” people.

However, the October 26 birthday personality is a private person and usually doesn’t discuss business or their feelings with other people. You don’t trust a lot of people and this is a smart practice.

But you surely have friends to whom you can vent your frustrations too. Your friends and family understand that you are not perfect and have your own set of disappointments and your periods of depression or blues.

When faced with obstacles, you have what it takes to come back fighting. It would not be smart to betray someone born on October 26. This Scorpio birthday person has a long memory.

They won’t forget who caused them discomfort and discord. This could be something that you may want to take a look at also. Stress has its way of coming back to haunt you mentally and physically.

The 26th October birthday astrology predicts that you have a tendency to look over your shoulders a lot looking for something to happen. This, also, could be because of the fact you seek revenge on people. Maybe you should find other ways of dealing with your anger and emotions. In a romantic relationship, one may find this 26th October birthday zodiac person to be jealous and controlling.

Be that as it may, you are knowledgeable and are smarter than the average bear. You have the gift of perception and insight so it’s hard for anyone to pull the wool over your eyes. Through this, however, you still find time to help people and have a hard time when you can’t.

Friends are few but that’s your choice. The October 26 birthday people prefer a small circle as opposed to a large group of associations. Your friends say that you are charming but you have the capability of being incredibly manipulative. However, you are not that heartless. You love deeply when you find a loyal and true friend or lover. Having the respect of people is more important to you than self-gratification.

The 26 October birthday horoscope foretells that career choices are many for those born on this day. You are particularly interested in professions that offer some crime or adventure. Forensic science is a growing program that can provide extensive training and hands on experience.

You are always in the know of things anyway so this will only accent your abilities. At the end of the day, having a Scorpio as your fearless leader could be the best idea yet. Besides being intelligent, you are not afraid and you tend to be protective of the people and things you care about.

Since you are willing to study for a new career, you will find yourself doing a lot of research… and liking it! You, as a team player, can go at it alone but you are very comfortable working by yourself and away from the spotlight. When it comes to money, the 26 October birthday personality would prefer to have it in the bank. You will not splurge on things you could live without. Your philosophy lies somewhere along the lines of being cheap. “Let me find out” you still have a flip phone!

The October 26 birthday meanings suggest that you are not the easiest person to understand or to get close to. You are a person who would rather talk about the latest news rather than the latest gossip. This does not appeal to you as you know gossip is mainly made up of lies and half-truths.

On the other hand, if you do find this Scorpio deep in a conversation about who, what, when and where, beware. The scorpion is probably setting a trap or at best, find out things they just have a need to know.

If today October 26 is your birthday, then you are concerned about your health. You stick to your eating schedules and meal planners. You prefer things like tennis, cycling, yoga, and meditation to physical exercise that requires sweat and pain. Looking good is important to you and your image but it should not hurt or so you say, Scorpio.

Generally, as someone born on October 26, you are a restless individual but you are motivated by success. You analyze almost everybody you come in contact with. This Scorpio is very capable of being passionate and mysterious at the same time.

You know your worth but don‘t find it necessary to flaunt it. Use that leverage when you need to let it all go. As a drawback or negative influence, you may suffer from paranoia.

All Signs…

Aries (March 21-April 19)

You are fortunate. This is a productive week for everyone, but you have the added advantage of having tremendous drive and energy to accomplish whatever you want to do. For starters, you’re interested in improving yourself. You want to be the best that you can be. (This is because you’re in touch with your deeper consciousness right now, which sounds heady, but it’s true.) Because of this, you want to experience life at a deeper, gut-level feeling. You’re concerned with finances, and the resources of others, and dealing with shared property and debt. This is an excellent week to negotiate a loan. Meanwhile, people you haven’t seen for a while who are far away, or from another culture, might enter your world.

Taurus (April 20-May 20)

This is not the time to go it alone. Form working units with others this week. Don’t hesitate to consult experts. This is a good time to examine your closest relationships. For your own benefit, you must be as good for your partner as he or she is for you. Don’t take on too much this week because you need more rest and more sleep. With Mars opposite your sign, you might encounter enemies or aggression from loved ones. (Whaaat?) Compromise might be necessary but it will be difficult. Discussions about shared property, especially old problems from the past, might come up again. When I was a kid, if we had to divide a special dessert, my dad said the person who made the cut – would get the second choice. (He was a Taurus.)

Gemini (May 21-June 20)

This week both the Sun and Mars are in your House of Employment helping you to accomplish as much as possible whether you have a “job job” or not. This is why your focus will be on efficiency, effectiveness, and making every action count. You want to discover the best way of doing something. You also want to be healthy, as well as productive. Be careful about being too bossy directing the efforts of others. (Many are probably not as gung-ho as you are.) Venus, in the most playful part of your chart, will encourage entertaining and amusing diversions, plus romance, the arts and socializing with others. But, issues with ex-partners are also back on your plate. Oh well.

Cancer (June 21-July 22)

Right now, your primary drive is to do what you want, and feel free to express yourself. That’s because the Sun is sitting in the part of your chart that rules recreation, amusing past times, romance, the entertainment world, sports and pleasant activities with kids. This is why you feel more lighthearted and up for some fun! You’re also keen to redecorate and invite people over. The only snag in this perfect picture is that Mercury retrograde will happen in the part of your chart that affects your job, your health and your dealings with your pet. Your efficiency will suffer! (You can handle this.)

Leo (July 23-Aug. 22)

Home, family and your private life continue to be your primary focus right now. You’re happy to hunker down at home and enjoy familiar surroundings. Interactions with family are important and cannot be ignored. Nevertheless, you’ll welcome time to contemplate and enjoy your own solitude. Actually, there’s increased activity and something unusual going on, which requires your attention. Fortunately, Venus in your House of Communications, sweetens your words and makes you charming and tactful. Meanwhile, Mercury retrograde will resurrect old flames and romantic partners from your past – in person – or in your dreams.

Virgo (Aug. 23-Sept. 22)

Your fast-pace continues! (Is there no justice?) Accept this accelerated tempo in your daily world and enjoy short trips, visits, errands and appointments. You have a lot of energy right now to learn and teach. You’ll be fascinated by new information and eager to share your knowledge with others. This is a strong time for writers, and people in sales, marketing, teaching and acting. You might spend money on beautiful things for yourself and loved ones; in part because money seems to come to you right now. (Ka-ching!) Prepare for relatives you haven’t seen for a while to drop by or stay for a visit. Stock the fridge.

Libra (Sept. 23-Oct. 22)

“Show me the money!” This week, you continue to focus on cash flow, earnings and possessions; however, at a deeper level, you will examine your relationship to the things that you own. And, at an even deeper level, you might ponder your value system as a whole. For example, what really matters for you in life? This is one of the best times all year to ponder this question. When you know what matters for you, you can make decisions in the future much easier. (You won’t throw the baby out with the bathwater.) You’re also motivated to work hard now to earn money. And as I mentioned last week, this continues to be a wonderful time to buy wardrobe goodies for yourself. Bonus!

Scorpio (Oct. 23-Nov. 21)

Once a year, the Sun is in your sign for four weeks. It entered Scorpio last Wednesday on the 22nd and will stay there until Friday, Nov. 21st giving you a marvellous window to re-energize yourself because the Sun is the source of all energy in the horoscope. This is why you will project yourself more forcefully, and make a dazzling impression on everyone. However, you might come on too strong, which is why working with others could be challenging. The bottom line is you feel a great need to express yourself, and it’s a valid need. What increases this powerful energy even more — is the fact that Mars is in your sign as well. Sheesh! This means you’re turbocharged – PowerPoint on steroids!

Sagittarius (Nov. 22-Dec. 21)

This is the last week before Mercury starts to slow down before going retrograde in your sign on Nov. 9. (It stays that way until Nov. 29.) However, because of its slowing down at the beginning, and lateness in catching up at the end, you’ll feel its effects from Nov.1 to Dec.17. (Yikes!) That means this week is your last chance to buy expensive Mercury-related items like cell phones, computers, cars and trucks. Or else – wait until after Dec.17. Forewarned is forearmed! Meanwhile, fair Venus in your House of Friendships promotes warm relations and success dealing with friends and group activities. Any group setting like a business conference will be favoured. A friend might become a lover.

Capricorn (Dec. 22-Jan. 19)

Continue to enjoy your increased popularity with friends, and your interactions with groups. You like to be involved in community projects, charities and committees because this allows you to socialize, while at the same time, being useful. This is a particularly good time to formulate your goals and start to actively pursue them. Find a good balance between your own self-interests and the interests of others, and coordinate these needs to make a win-win partnership. Physical activity, especially athletics and competitive sports, will appeal to you now. You continue to make a great impression on authority figures, bosses and parents because Venus is at the top of your chart making you appear attractive.

Aquarius (Jan. 20-Feb. 18)

As I mentioned last week, this continues to be a time when you make a marvellous impression on everyone because the Sun is at the top of your chart, symbolically casting you in a flattering spotlight. Don’t shy away from increased responsibilities. You will meet the requirements of others with little effort. They’ll be impressed – and you’ll be surprised. (It’s smoke and mirrors.) Since you have this advantage – use it! Don’t hesitate to ask for favours and help as well as promotions and raises. Look for opportunities to travel for pleasure because this is possible. Romance with someone “different” might also bring some excitement into your world.

Pisces (Feb. 19-March 20)

If your work involves dealing with other countries and different cultures, you will make great strides this week. You will also succeed if you’re dealing with medical or legal matters, as well as anything to do with publishing, the media and higher education because these are the areas that will offer you the most promise for success, expansion and good press. Grab every chance to travel that comes your way. If you can’t travel, then make travel plans for the future – especially for fun vacations or research for artistic projects. Romance is affectionate. (In fact, passion might possibly be a vehicle for self-transformation.) Meanwhile, this an excellent time to ask for a loan or a mortgage because you can attract money and gifts to you. Sweet!

Flashback 2004 Samhain

Expect the unexpected if you celebrate Samhain – the Celtic New Year – on All Hallows Eve: the planets bring a lot of energetic talk and chaos, and the resultant noise will add exuberance to the ritual. Look for psychic dreams on astrological Samhain, November 6; your intuition will be in top form if you do readings at ritual. The power is the strongest it has been in several years.

This is the sabbat for wearing your witchy black. Clean the house, including the hearth, from top to bottom; the garden also needs to be prepared for the winter by this date. Lay new fires. Fest with your family and set places for your ancestors. Cleanse divination tools (cards, crystals, runes) and rededicate them to the Goddess. For the last harvest festival, put apples, nuts, acorns, and squashes on the altar, and add pictures of the family members you are missing.

Using fresh harvested hazel nuts, make a wreath with nine nuts (three times three) to protect your house from fire and lightening. Offer thanks to the river gods or the gods of the sea, and remember to honor the goddess Hecate.

Flashback 2004 Beltane

Beltane is he holiday that draws all witches outside to celebrate the returning power of the Sun and the fertility of the land.

Wear red robes for ritual and dress your altar with reds for passion. If you have identified a nearby rowan tree, you can make a wreath for your hair using rowan twigs. Decorate your house with freshly cut greens, herbs, and flowers. Arrange for music or drumming to lighten your steps of the dancers of the maypole or spiral dance. Lose yourself in the dance.

Fire is the honored element at this ritual, so have circle members jump a cauldron for purification and protection. Watr is another honored element: be certain to visit your local sacred spring or riverbank. Sprinkle perfume into the water for the undines. Again, leave a drop or two of milk and other food offerings for the nature spirits.

Wake before dawn on this day and watch the Sun rise over a river or beach. Gather a pitcherful where the Sun has gilded the water. When you return home, walk the bounds of your land, sprinkling water in your garden beds to ensure plenty of rainfall during the growing season.

Weekly Horoscope Sunday, October 19 to Saturday, October 25, 2025

All Signs…

Aries (March 21-April 19)

This week relations with partners, spouses and close friends are warm and rewarding. Make an effort to get out and have fun! On Monday, you’ll be staunch about defending your best interests about inheritances, banking, taxes, debt and shared property. Not only will you stand your ground, you will dictate terms. Ironically, these are the same areas that will assume a greater importance for you in the next several weeks, as the Sun moves into one of your Money Houses, specifically, the one dealing with jointly-held property, wills, inheritances and estate issues. You might meet someone that produces some soul-searching or psychological self-inquiry. (“Hi Sigmund.”)

Taurus (April 20-May 20)

This week the Sun moves opposite your sign to stay for the next four weeks. This happens once a year and when it does, it symbolizes that the Sun is as far away from you as it can get all year. Because the Sun represents energy, this means you will need more sleep in the next four weeks. (Go to bed.) However, this polarized position of the Sun is a blessing because it allows you to have greater objectivity in seeing the role you play in your closest relationships. This could be helpful and informative. This is not the time to go it alone in your activities. Work with others. Seek out opinions. It’s an excellent time to consult experts – consultants, lawyers, specialists or astrologers.

Gemini (May 21-June 20)

You might feel confused about a friend. Perhaps you’re disappointed in them? But did you express your expectations? Are they aware of your disappointment? This subtle influence might bubble beneath the surface of things. Meanwhile this week, you’re gung-ho to work! On Monday, you’ll be active and busy – hands-on, in an aggressive way. (You might be a tad bossy dealing with others.) Nevertheless, you will get a lot done! By midweek, the Sun will change signs, to stay for four weeks — motivating you to work, be productive, and be healthy and self-directed. You want to be the best you can be!

Cancer (June 21-July 22)

Parents are involved more than usual with their kids now through physical activity, competitive sports or anything related to the arts – the theatre world or musical performances. Meanwhile, you’re putting fun and pleasure first! Many of you will redecorate where you live and enjoy entertaining family and friends. Others will slip away on vacations “to trip the light fantastic”. It’s totally appropriate to put yourself first for the next four weeks because this is the one time of year when the celestial heavens are encouraging you to do what you want. Let yourself be free-spirited, lighter and eager for good times!

Leo (July 23-Aug. 22)

This week the Sun joins Mercury and Mars to heighten your focus on home and family, especially if guests, residential moves, or renovations are creating turmoil. You’re ready to roll up your sleeves to fix things or do home repairs. Family discussions might take place. Fortunately, fair Venus is in your House of Communications making your dealings with your daily world more pleasant and lighthearted. In turn, you will have a greater appreciation of beauty in your everyday surroundings. Take a short drive to enjoy the scenery! Enjoy being with friends and groups. Seek out the company of others. Incidentally, this is a good time to ask for a loan or financial support. Ka-ching!

Virgo (Aug. 23-Sept. 22)

Suddenly, you have places to go, things to do and people to see! You might also be more involved with friends, neighbours, relatives and business associates. Slip away on a vacation if you can. You do feel the need to talk to others, which is why you will seek out someone to share your ideas. However, be careful: both Mercury and Mars are in your House of Communications right now, which will make you identify strongly with your opinions and make you a tad argumentative. (Take a breath if you see the hair blowing back over someone’s ears.) On the other hand, this is a great time for those of you in sales, marketing, writing and acting. “Listen to me. I know things!”

Libra (Sept. 23-Oct. 22)

Libra rules haute couture, which is why so many of you dress well, and are colour coordinated. Shopping for clothes, and watching how others dress fascinates you. Good news! This is an excellent time to shop for wardrobe goodies. Meanwhile, this week, the Sun joins Mercury and Mars in your Money House to stay there for the next four weeks. (This is the only time all year this happens.) This heightens your involvement with money, movable property and cash flow. You will give more thought to the resources in your life – and the stuff you own. Does your stuff help you? Or is it a nagging problem? Now is the time to establish greater control of your life through your possessions.

Scorpio (Oct. 23-Nov. 21)

Chatty Mercury and fiery Mars are in your sign boosting your energy and making you talkative. That’s why you’re keen to express your ideas. It’s also a great time to get out and travel. On Wednesday, this week, the Sun moves into your sign to stay for four weeks. (This can happen only once a year.) Happy birthday! With the Sun in your sign, you will tend to attract people and favourable situations to you. The thing to know is this is your chance to recharge your batteries for the rest of year! That’s why this is the one time of year when your first duty is to yourself. If you don’t fulfil this duty, you’ll be of little use to anyone else. Remember: For the next four weeks — you come first!

Sagittarius (Nov. 22-Dec. 21)

Your personal year is ending. This means the next four weeks are like a time of limbo. You’re in the wings “waiting” for your queue to make your big entrance. That makes this the perfect time to ponder how well you are doing at the art of living? Why not set aside a few moments to think about what you want for yourself in the future? 10 years from now? Five years from now? Two years from now? Next year? Take some time to jot down some goals because goals give you a clearer focus on what’s important to you. They also give you more clarity in decision-making, and better control over your future. (You like to have a sense of purpose.)

Capricorn (Dec. 22-Jan. 19)

Life looks good with fair Venus at the top of your chart opening doors for you. You will attract people and situations that promote your good reputation. Bosses and authority figures are favourably inclined. People admire you. Regardless of what you do for a living, someone will ask for your artistic advice about how to make something look better. Some of you might fall in love with a boss or a teacher. Meanwhile, this is a popular time for you! You might be involved with younger people, competitions or competitive team work. You might also be more involved with clubs and organizations. This is a great time to set some goals to keep you focused.

Aquarius (Jan. 20-Feb. 18)

For the next four weeks, the Sun is at the top of your chart, symbolically thrusting you in the limelight. This happens once a year and it means people admire you. They might offer you increased responsibilities. Ironically, you don’t have to do anything different. (Ah, the power of good lighting.) Since this smoke and mirrors trick comes along only once a year – by all means, use this to your advantage! Speak up. Ask for what you want. You might make a bid for a raise or a promotion or a parking spot. It could be anything. For sure, the next four weeks are the time to ask. Meanwhile, travel for pleasure beckons. Grab every chance you can to get a change of scenery!

Pisces (Feb. 19-March 20)

This is a favourable time for you to attract money to you from others – a spouse, a business partner, a bank or the government. It’s also an excellent time to seek a loan or a mortgage. Meanwhile, your intimate, personal relationships will be affectionate in a gentle, loving way. New romance might begin for some of you. Midweek, the Sun changes signs joining Mercury and Mars in the part of your chart that makes you want to explore the world more. You will want to travel, study and talk to people from different backgrounds. New and unfamiliar experiences will appeal. Enjoy reading and writing; however, get out more so that you can be involved! You need stimulation!

Soothing Sage

Sage not only has many mouth-watering culinary uses, but is valued by herbalists for its antibacterial and antiseptic properties. Astrogically associated with the zodiacal sign of the Bull, which prevails on May 8, sage is often used to soothe a sore throat, and it is thought that its efficacious action is at least partly due to “Taurus’ influence over the throat. So if your throat feels scratchy and raw and you are finding swallowing painful, brew a pot of sage tea (use 1 ounce of dry sage, or 2 ounce of fresh leaves, to 1 pint of boiling water) to gargle with or sip.

Miraculous Manuka?

If you are prone to sore throats invest in a pot of Manuka honey – check that it has a UMF (unique Manuka factor) rating – and you may find that it’s worth its weight in gold. For many people swear that swallowing a teaspooon or two of this New Zealand honey (neat) works wonders.

Tuesday: Shake the only hand of Tyr

Tyr (referred to as Tiw, Tiu or Tew in Old English) was the god of combat. He had just one hand and the story behind it is as follows.

The prophecy of the sybil that three siblings would bring troubles to gods alarmed the pantheon and Odin (see also the section for Wednesday) decided to get rid of them. One of them was Fenrir, a huge mythological wolf. They tried to bound him, but he was too strong and tore any chain they used.

Finally they asked dwarves to make a special, untearable binding called Gleipnir. It consisted of six wondrous ingredients which do not exist any longer because the gods took them from the world for good. These were the sound of a cat’s footfall, the beard of a woman, the breath of a fish, the roots of a mountain, the sinews of a bear (meaning rather sensibilities in this case) and the spittle of a bird.

Fenrir did not believe them that they would set him free again after having tried the binding on him. Tyr had to put his arm in his mouth as the guarantee. That is why one of his arms is missing. And again, when Ragnarok begins, the wolf will free himself from Gleipnir and avenge this deception by devouring Odin.

In Romance languages, this day belongs to Mars, the Roman god of war (martes in Spanish, mardi in French).

Magickal Days of the Week – Tuesday

Named for the Norse god Tyr, who was a deity of heroism and combat, Tuesday is a very martial sort of day – color associations include bright red and oranges, as well as warrior-like metals such as iron and steel.

The ancient Romans called this day Martis, after the warrior god Mars – other deities associated with Tuesday include Ares, the Morrighan, and other gods of battle and glory. Red gemstones like rubies and garnets come into play on Tuesdays, as do herbs and plants such as thistles, holly, coneflowers and cacti – you’ll notice these are all sharp, prickly plants!

One of the interesting – and more than a little amusing – aspects of Tuesday magic is that in addition to war and conflict against your enemies, this is a day also associated with marriage. You can also use this day of the week for magical workings connected to protection and initiation. Use Tuesday to assert yourself, make a mark and stake your claims.

Tuesday–The Day of Tiu

Tuesday is the first day of the week which is named after a god of the Angles and Saxons–Tiu, the God of War. The Angles and Saxons, like the Greeks and Romans, worshiped many gods, and though these gods were in a great number of ways similar to those of the Greeks and Romans, we also find very great differences. These differences are due to the fact that the Angles and Saxons lived in a very different kind of country, led a very different kind of life, and consequently had different ideas. Their chief enemies were frost and cold, and they imagined the freezing winds to be caused by frost-giants who lived in a land of ice and waged continual warfare with the gods who befriended man and protected him as far as they could against the frost-giants and all the suffering which they caused. The chief of these gods was Woden or Odin, the All-father, of whom we read in the following chapter, and next to him in importance came Thor, the God of Thunder, the bitterest enemy of the giants. The god after whom Tuesday is named was known as Tiu among the Angles and Saxons, and as Tyr among the Norsemen. He was the God of War, and corresponds to Mars among the Romans, whose name for this day was Dies Martis, the day of Mars. The French have kept the Roman name in the form mardi.

Tiu was a great fighter and knew no fear, and was naturally always called upon in time of battle. He was usually represented as having no right hand, owing to a misfortune which befell him in the following way. From his lofty throne Odin, the chief of the gods, one day saw in the land of the giants three terrible monsters, which grew so rapidly that he was filled with fear lest they should invade the home of the gods. Accordingly he determined to get rid of them before they became any stronger. One Hel, an enormous giantess, he flung into the Underworld, where, as the Goddess of Death, she ruled over the kingdom of the dead. Another, Iormungandr, a serpent, he cast into the sea, where it grew so huge that it encircled the whole earth. The third was Fenrir, a wolf, whom Odin brought to Asgard, the home of the gods, hoping that he might eventually tame him. Fenrir, however, grew stronger and fiercer each day, until the gods, of whom Tiu alone was brave enough to go near him, decided at last to bind him in such a way that he could do no harm. A very strong chain was obtained, and the gods suggested to Fenrir, who often boasted of his great strength, that he should allow himself to be bound with it in order to prove whether he was really as strong as he claimed to be. Fenrir agreed, and then by merely stretching himself easily brohe his bonds. Again the gods put him to the test with a still stronger chain, but as before he succeeded in breaking it. Seeing that no ordinary chain would be strong enough to bind Fenrir, the gods sent one of their servants to the home of the dwarfs, a race of little people who lived underground, and who were very clever workers in metal. They also possessed great powers of magic, as we shall see in a later story. At the bidding of the gods, the dwarfs made a silken rope out of the voice of fishes, a woman’s beard, the roots of a mountain, and the footsteps of a cat, which was so strong that no power could break it! A third time the gods challenged Fenrir to show his strength by allowing himself to be bound with this new cord, but Fenrir became suspicious, and at last consented only on condition that one of the gods should put his hand in his mouth, and hold it there as a pledge that the gods were not deceiving him. This condition greatly alarmed the gods, who began to fear that their trick was not going to succeed, but the bold war-god Tiu stepped forward and, without any hesitation, placed his right hand in the wolf’s mouth. The gods at once bound Fenrir with the magic cord made by the dwarfs, and, in spite of all his struggles, the wolf was unable to free himself. Great was the delight of the gods at their success, a delight shared by all but Tiu, who had little cause to be pleased with the result of the trick, for Fenrir, finding he was trapped, immediately bit off the hand of the god. Thus Tiu was deprived of his sword hand, but so clever was he that he wielded his sword equally well with his left hand, and still remained invincible in battle.

On one occasion Tiu and Thor, the God of Thunder, set out for the land of the giants to obtain an enormous kettle, which the gods required for a feast. They came at last to the home of a giant, Hymir, who possessed a kettle a mile deep and a mile wide, and were hospitably received by the giant’s wife. When she learned the errand on which they had come, she warned them that her husband was very fierce and hot-tempered, and advised them to hide themselves when Hymir returned, lest he should kill them with a glance. No sooner had the gods taken refuge behind some kettles, which were kept on a beam at the end of the hall, than Hymir came in. When he heard that visitors had called, he flashed his eyes round the hall so fiercely that, as his glance lighted on the gods’ hiding-place, the beam split in two, the kettles came crashing to the ground, and Tiu and Thor were discovered. Hymir, however, was persuaded by his wife to receive the gods kindly; he prepared a meal of three oxen in their honour, but was astonished and dismayed to see Thor eat two of them himself. The next day the gods gave the giant many proofs of their great strength and skill, and Hymir consented to give them the kettle they were seeking. Tiu at once tried to lift it but failed; then Thor, after a mighty struggle, raised it from the ground, and, as he gave the final pull, his feet broke through the floor of the giant’s house. As soon as the gods had departed, Thor carrying the kettle on his head, Hymir called his brothers together, and pursued after them. Thor, however, attacked them with his famous hammer, and killed them one by one. Tiu and Thor then continued their journey, and brought the huge kettle safely to their own land.

There are few stories told of Tiu, yet he held a high place among the gods, as the name Tuesday shows. He is most famous for his share in the binding of Fenrir, whereby was put off the dreaded Ragnarok, the day of the final battle between the gods and the giants.

The Witches Guide To Tuesdays

A god, goddess, or planet governs each day of the week. It is usually easy to spot the ruler of the day by its name. The word Tuesday, however, is not so easy, but if we look at the word in Spanish, Martes, we clearly see its connections to Mars.

Because Tuesday revolves around the energy of Mars, Tuesdays are good for business, mechanical things, buying and selling animals, hunting, beginning studies, gardening, sexual activities, and confrontation. This is a day for sex magick, energy, stamina, and health. As in the old saying, Tuesdays child is full of grace, is also good for success magick and defense against enemies.

Angels of Tuesday are Camael, Samael, Satael, Amabiel, Friagne, and Hyniel. When invoked, Camael takes the form of a leopard. In Druid mythology he is a god of war, which is why we see him associated with Mars. Camael is said to be a member of the “Magnificent Seven” in some circles. Camael is another “terminator” angel.

Samael walks both worlds as a magician and sorcerer. some see him as the angel of death, others as “the bright and poisonous one.” Many consider him more of a demon, and accuse him of being Satan. However, there is reference to the satans (plural) as enforcers of the law, a sort of angelic police, if you will. Supposedly, when Samael is around, dogs howl in the night. On one hand, he is the ruler of the fifth heaven and in charge of two million angels; on the other, he is the one who changed into a serpent and convinced Eve to partake of the forbidden fruit of knowledge.

Satael is an angel of air invoked in magic rites and is the presiding spirit of the planet Mars. Amabiel is another spirit of the planet Mars; however he spends his energy on issues of human sexuality. Friagne, also an angel of this day, is invoked from the east. He is a member of the fifth heaven. Hyniel also belongs to this day and is subject to the east wind.

On Tuesdays the hour of sunrise and every eight hours after that are also ruled by Mars, and that makes these times of the day doubly blessed. These four hours are the strongest ones to do ritual in. Check your local newspaper, astrological calendar, or almanac to determine your local sunrise.

A Little Witchery for Your Tuesday

Tuesday is the day to work any magick that falls in the category of increasing strength, courage, bravery, and passion. All of these intense emotions are linked to this day’s energies, and spells designed around these themes will have extra punch when performed on this magickal day.

So, let’s add a little passion and conviction into your life! Break out the daring red pieces of your wardrobe, and put a little pizzazz into your day. Work with Lilith, and see what she has to teach you about personal power and sexuality. Meditate on Tiw/Tyr and Mars, and see what those ancient warrior gods will show you about new tactics, strategies, and claiming personal victories in your life. Practice conjuring up that astral weapon from the meditation and use it wisely for protection and for courage.

Create a philter for courage and protection or handcraft your own Witch’s jar to remove negativity from your home. See what other Witch crafts you can conjure up with Tuesday’s magick. Create some kitchen magick on this Tuesday by whipping up a spicy stew-add in a few Mars-associated ingredients such as carrots, peppers, and garlic. Your Daily Magickal Applications for Tuesday

Tuesday is the day associated with the planet Mars. In mythology, Mars was the Roman god of war. If you’re wondering how this day came to be named, it’s because to the Norse, Anglo-Saxon, and Germanic people, this day was Tiw’s day (Tuesday). Tuesday actually got its name from the Norse deity Tyr, Tiw, or Tiu, who was also a god of battles and courage. This deity was very similar to the Roman Mars, and the names of the days of the week became switched and substituted as the Germanic peoples replaced the older deities with their own gods. So the name was changed from the Latin Dies Martis (“Mars’ day”) to the old English Tiwesdaeg.

The Norse god Tiw, or Tyr, was known for his sense of justice, discipline, and integrity. This day’s planetary influence brings with it the aggression, bravery, and honor of soldiers, as well as the passion and strength of those of us who must fight for what we believe in.

Tuesday & The Perfect Corresponding Spell for the Day

Now that you are starting to get into the passionate, courageous, and daring qualities of Tuesday, here are a few more spells for you to experiment with. Don’t be afraid to adapt these spells to suit your needs. Add some tarot cards, herbs, scents, crystals, or essential oils to these Tuesday spells, and crank up the volume on your own witchery! As long as your intentions are honorable, I am sure they will work out beautifully.

Victory Through Strength Tarot Spell

This tarot spell may be set up simply or more elaborately; it is up to you. Don’t be afraid to make your magick personal and unique.

Either use the featured cards (Six of Wands, Five of Wands, and Strength) as your only props around a red candle or add the associated crystals for a Tuesday (ruby, bloodstone, stone, and garnet). Try draping the workspace with a red cloth or scarf. Consider working ing this spell at sunrise or at noon, when the sun is directly overhead and bright. I suggest gest setting the candle and its holder in the center of your workspace, then arranging the cards and other accessories around it.

Another good idea would be to scatter those flat-bottomed, red glass marbles on the work surface. (You know, those pretty glass gems that are so popular for wedding-reception reception table decorations?) You can pick up a bag of those at most arts and crafts stores for a few bucks. Find some iridescent ones; wouldn’t they look sharp? Use your imagination! How about holly leaves or red flower petals? Are you getting inspired yet? Good. Now psych yourself up and repeat the spell below three times:

The lady holds the lion within her arms
My strength comes from my soul and causes no harm
I hold the power to succeed time and time again
Honor and victory are mine, let the spell begin.

Meditate on the symbolism of the cards for a short time. Close the spell by saying:

For the good of all, causing harm to none
By fire and passion, this spell is done!

Let the candle burn until it goes out on its own. If you used stones in the spell, you may keep them with you for a few days in your purse or pocket to help reinforce the spell.
