August to Feature 2 of Top Astronomy Events of 2023

August to feature 2 of top astronomy events of 2023

Warm summer nights are numbered across North America with the start of autumn right around the corner, but there will be several notable night sky events for stargazers to enjoy before the arrival of meteorological fall on Sept. 1.

Shortly before the midpoint of August, the dog days of summer will conclude. From July 3 through Aug. 11, Sirius, known as the dog star, appears to rise and set with the sun. Some ancient peoples believed that the extra light from the bright star added to the heat of the day, and while the myth has been debunked, the nickname continues to live on.

Sirius will once again become visible by the end of the month, rising in the eastern sky at the end of the night before daybreak just below the constellation Orion.

From a “super blue moon” to an onslaught of shooting stars, here are the top astronomy events to mark on your calendar in August:

One of the best meteor showers of the year will peak during the second weekend of August, presenting the perfect opportunity to spot shooting stars streaking across the sky.

Up to 100 meteors per hour may be seen from dark, cloud-free areas of North America as the annual Perseids peak on the night of Aug. 12 into the early morning of Aug. 13.

“The Perseids are the most popular meteor shower as they peak on warm August nights as seen from the northern hemisphere,” the American Meteor Society said.

The only other meteor shower that outperforms the Perseids is the Geminids in mid-December, which can boast up to 120 meteors per hour, but often coincides with cold and cloudy winter-like weather.

Late August will offer excellent views of one of the largest planets in the solar system — no telescope required.

On Aug. 27, Saturn will reach opposition, a point in its orbit where the planet appears directly opposite of the sun from the perspective of the Earth. This is also around the same time that it is closest to the Earth, meaning that Saturn will glow brightly in the sky all night long.

No special equipment is needed to spot the second-largest planet in the solar system, but most telescopes have enough magnification power to reveal Saturn’s famous rings.

Although opposition takes place on Aug. 27, any night during the second half of August and the first few weeks of September with good weather will feature good views of the planet. Saturn will rise in the eastern sky around sunset and slowly traverse the sky throughout the night before setting in the west around daybreak.

A rare astronomical event will unfold in the night sky at the end of the month, although it may look like many other events throughout the year.

Two full moons will rise in August, the first one appearing on the first night of the month, followed by another on Aug. 30. Both will be supermoons, appearing slightly larger and brighter than a normal full moon, but the latter will outshine the former due to its nickname.

When two full moons occur in the same calendar month, the second is referred to as a blue moon. The most recent blue moon of its kind occurred on Oct. 31, 2020, and another one will not occur until May 31, 2026.

Despite the nickname, the “super blue moon” on Aug. 30 will look like many other full moons throughout the year. Full moons in August are also known as a Sturgeon Moon, a Corn Moon, a Mountain Shadow Moon and a Black Cherry Moon.

7 Planets are Going to be Retrograde This Summer

7 planets are going to be retrograde this summer

During the summer of 2023, a resounding seven planets will be in retrograde at the same time. Yes, you read that right.

The word “retrograde” tends to conjure up a visceral cringe for astrology followers. Mercury retrograde, for example, is a dreaded transit that happens three times a year, and is said to slow down communication.

Retrograde has a similar effect on other planetary bodies. The transit acts as a type of handicap, impeding the way they shine.

Retrogrades occur when a planet appears to move backwards in its orbit. These are optical illusions, but are still thought to have impact on an astrological level.

Here’s what to know about the many retrogrades of the summer of 2023, which will create an astrologically charged summer.

What planets are in retrograde in the summer of 2023?

Pluto retrograde

When is it? May 1 through Oct. 10

Pluto retrograde starts off in Aquarius and then enters Capricorn on June 11, taking us back to March. Old power struggles and former triangular situations will be reopened and re-examined to see how we can learn and grow from them.

Saturn retrograde

When is it? June 17 through Nov. 4

Saturn retrograde in Pisces represents a moment of reflection in which we’re contemplating how we can attain our goals for the future. Relationships are going to be tested, as we’re deciding who and what we should invest our energy in.

Neptune retrograde

When is it? June 30 through Dec. 6

Our intuition may not be as spot on as it usually is when Neptune is retrograde in Pisces. You may start believing the narratives you tell yourself — even if they’re not true.

Venus retrograde

When is it? July 22 through Sept. 3

Venus retrograde in Leo will make us long for big declarations of love and affection. The less attention we get, the more we’ll want it. This also holds true for money and finances.

Mercury retrograde

When is it? Aug. 23 through Sept. 15

Mercury retrograde in Virgo is going to bring back exes and old flames. This transit will bring us face-to-face with the past, both the good and the bad.

Uranus retrograde

When is it? Aug. 28 through Jan. 27, 2024

The planet of change takes baby steps towards evolution when retrograde in Taurus. Don’t expect major waves or growth during this time. Take life one day at a time to avoid frustrations from rising during this planetary retrograde.

Jupiter retrograde

When is it? Sept. 4 through Dec. 30

Jupiter retrograde in Taurus may prove to be beneficial. This transit urges us to make calculated risks instead of jumping all in without looking. Basically, it’s a call to read the fine print.

How the retrogrades will affect your Sun sign

Aries

You may not be a fan of budgeting. Still, it’s important to create a financial plan that works for you. Remember, sales are your friend. Keep the receipts if you decide that you have changed your mind on your purchases.

Taurus

Little by little, you’re blossoming into the bull you want to be. Don’t put pressure on yourself to evolve and transform all at once because that’s not possible. Move with the flow.

Gemini

Use your charisma to elegantly move past old situations that you want no part of. You’ve evolved past all that. If people project negativity onto you, ignore them and focus on yourself.

Cancer

Your communication abilities may be hindered, sowing confusion among your freinds and loved ones. Be clear with what you want to say and be prepared to explain exactly what you mean to avoid misunderstandings.

Leo

You may feel as though you’re not getting enough TLC from others — but the reality is that they’re dealing with their own problems. Instead of roaring out your frustrations, check in with your friends and offer compassion.

Virgo

Rather than deal with all this retrograde energy, you want to go on vacation. Permission to live with your hand in the sand for a while, granted!

Libra

Boundaries are a must this summer. Setting clear limits will ensure people aren’t taking advantage of your kindness. Then, you won’t be bothered with other people’s issues and can remedy your own.

Scorpio

Relationships will be in flux, as Jupiter and Uranus add a flair of excitement that could lead to being on-and-off and then on again with your partner. Be open to the erratic patterns that are ahead of you this summer.

Sagittarius

You won’t have stability in work until the retrogrades clear up. Your boss could make you feel as though you’re replaceable — even though you aren’t — which could cause a lot of anxiety within. Breathe through the motions, Sag!

Capricorn

After a hard day of work, you’ll want to hit a bar to burn off the irritations from your job. But you may feel lonely because your friends are occupied with their own lives. Loneliness can be tough, which is why you should try to make new friends.

Aquarius

Your loved ones are going through issues, which they’re putting on your shoulders. It’ll be hard to manage their different personalities and to create a bridge that brings them together. Call upon your powers as a community-minded Aquarius!

Pisces

Your uncertainty about the future of your relationships could cause you to preemptively create distance. Don’t pull away from those you care about until you’ve witnessed red flags in the relationship. Until then, you can keep them going.

Sturgeon Full Moon and Blue Moon and New Moon Information for August 2023

You can use this link to go forward or backward in time for Moon phase information. If you are curious, you can even find out what phase the Moon was in when you or anyone else was born.

From MoonGiant.com

The Full Moon for this month will occur early in the month on Tuesday, August 1st and 31st. The New Moon will happen later in August on Wednesday, August 16th.

What is the August Full Sturgeon Moon?

August’s full moon is called the Full Sturgeon Moon, after the primitive fish that used to be abundant in North America’s lakes and rivers during the summer months. Having remained mostly unchanged since the earliest fossil records, sturgeons are ancient living fossils that can grow up until 3.5 meters long, or as long as two adult humans stacked on top of each other. Nowadays, however, it’s almost impossible to see a sturgeon during the Full Sturgeon Moon. While they used to thrive, sturgeons are now considered the single most critically endangered group of species on earth – and you might be part of the reason why.

Have you ever eaten caviar? Some species of sturgeons are harvested for their roe, which is then processed into caviar. Because of this, wild sturgeons have been exploited to the brink of extinction due to overfishing and illegal poaching. In addition, they are also vulnerable to water pollution, and their breeding grounds are often damaged due to agriculture and lumbering. Though sturgeons are extremely long-lived – the females can live up to be 150 years old – sturgeons might not be around for much longer. They might have survived the dinosaurs, but they might not be able to survive human beings and our hunger for luxurious delicacies like caviar. But there is something even more terrifying than hungry human beings: hungry ghosts.

In China, the Full Sturgeon Moon is known as the Hungry Ghosts Moon. August’s full moon coincides with the Hungry Ghosts Festival, which is when the gates of hell open up and the hungry dead once again walk amongst the living. The Chinese prepare offerings of food and money to satisfy the ghosts’ hunger, make them happy, and prevent them from causing havoc amongst humankind. In Malaysia and Singapore, Chinese communities set up musical stages and host performances, making sure to always leave the front row empty for the honored guests – the hungry ghosts. Under the full moon, people light lotus-shaped water lanterns and float them on lakes, rivers, and pools, in order to provide light for lost souls to find their way safely back into the afterlife.

Despite the macabre atmosphere of the event, the Hungry Ghosts Festival actually originated as a harvest festival during the Han Dynasty, during which farmers would pray to their ancestors and report their autumn harvest to them. Due to Taoist and Buddhist influences, folk beliefs combined with religious ceremonies to form the Hungry Ghost Festival. In Japan, which also had Buddhist influences, this festival is celebrated as the Obon festival. Japanese communities wear yukata, eat and make merry at carnivals, and perform the Obon dance.

In North America, Native American tribes also saw the Full Sturgeon Moon as signifying a time of bountiful harvest. The Cherokee tribes called it the Full Fruit Moon, and many other First Nation tribes referred to it as the Black Berries Moon. The Sioux called it the Moon When All Things Ripen. The Paint Clans, which were known for their medicinal prowess, would harvest herbs and medicines, while the Wild Potato tribes would forage for food. Naturally, they would also catch a lot of sturgeon. You, on the other hand, may want to celebrate the Full Sturgeon Moon by telling your friends about the importance of saving its critically endangered namesake.

TWO supermoons in August mean double the stargazing fun! The full Sturgeon Moon reaches its peak on Tuesday, August 1, 2023, and then we have a full Blue Moon on Wednesday, August 30, 2023—and it will be the closest supermoon of the year! Learn more about the TWO full Moons of August.

When to See the Full Moons in August 2023

August 1: Full Sturgeon Moon

August’s first full Moon will appear on the afternoon of Tuesday, August 1, reaching peak illumination at 2:32 P.M. Eastern Time. That evening, look toward the southeast after sunset to catch a glimpse of the Sturgeon Moon rising.

You may have heard that there are four supermoons in a row this year; the August 1 supermoon is the second supermoon of this unusual sequence. “Supermoon” is a catchy term for what astronomers call “a perigean full Moon” which is when the full Moon happens at (or very near) the exact time when the Moon is closest to us in its orbit.

A supermoon exceeds the disk size of an average-sized Moon by up to 8% and the brightness of an average-sized full Moon by some 16%. You may not perceive the difference in size, but a supermoon will appear brighter in the sky.

August 30: Blue Moon

Later in the month, a second full Moon, a Blue Moon will make an appearance. The term Blue Moon is most commonly used when we have two full Moons in a single month. On Wednesday, August 30, the Full Moon will peak at  9:36 P.M.

August 30-31 supermoon will be the closest, biggest, and brightest full supermoon of 2023. It’s exceptionally close in Moon miles from Earth (222,043 miles). The next time we’ll have a closer full supermoon is November 5, 2025, when the moon lies 221,817 miles from Earth.

Why Is It Called the Sturgeon Moon?

The full Moon names used by The Old Farmer’s Almanac come from a number of places, including Native American, Colonial American, and European sources. Traditionally, each full Moon name was applied to the entire lunar month in which it occurred, not solely to the full Moon.

The Sturgeon Moon

August’s full Moon was traditionally called the Sturgeon Moon because the giant sturgeon of the Great Lakes and Lake Champlain were most readily caught during this part of summer.

Alternative August Moon Names

Flying Up Moon is a Cree term describing the time when young birds are finally ready to take the leap and learn to fly.

Corn Moon (Algonquin, Ojibwe), Harvest Moon (Dakota), and Ricing Moon (Anishinaabe) signify that this is the time to gather maturing crops. Along the same vein, the Assiniboine people named this period Black Cherries Moon, referring to when chokecherries become ripe.

The Tlingit people of the Pacific Northwest traditionally called this time of the season the Mountain Shadows Moon.

Earth’s Spin Has Shifted—And Humans Are To Blame

Humans have pumped so much groundwater out of the Earth that we have shifted the Earth’s rotational pole, according to a study.

In a paper published in the journal Geophysical Research Letters, researchers found that the rotational pole around which our planet spins has drifted around 31 inches east between 1993 and 2010 due to groundwater depletion and resulting sea level rise.

The position of the Earth’s rotational pole relative to the crust can be affected by how the mass of water is distributed across the planet.

“Earth’s rotational pole actually changes a lot,” Ki-Weon Seo, a geophysicist at Seoul National University who led the study, said in a statement. “Our study shows that among climate-related causes, the redistribution of groundwater actually has the largest impact on the drift of the rotational pole.”

The model only matched the drift in the pole observed between 1993 and 2010 if scientists took into account 2,150 gigatons of groundwater redistribution. Without accounting for the groundwater that humans had pumped from below the Earth’s surface, the model was off by 31 inches or 1.7 inches of drift per year.

“I’m very glad to find the unexplained cause of the rotation pole drift,” Seo said. “On the other hand, as a resident of Earth and a father, I’m concerned and surprised to see that pumping groundwater is another source of sea-level rise.”

The 2,150 gigaton figure—equivalent to 0.23 inches of global sea level rise—comes from previous estimates by scientists regarding groundwater pumping within the 17-year period from 1993 to 2010. But direct observational evidence supporting this estimate has been lacking.

The modeling in the latest study—taking into account the redistribution of water from underground sources into the oceans—has provided independent confirmation of this estimate.

“This is a nice contribution and an important documentation for sure,” Surendra Adhikari, a research scientist at the California Institute of Technology’s Jet Propulsion Laboratory who was not involved in the study but took part in the research published in 2016, said in a statement. “They’ve quantified the role of groundwater pumping on polar motion, and it’s pretty significant.”

Groundwater depletion involves pumping out water from sources such as underground aquifers faster than the liquid can be replenished. This groundwater is used for agricultural purposes as well as being supplied to urban areas.

Once this groundwater has been extracted, it can find its way into the ocean through run-off or via the process of evaporation and precipitation.

2 Supermoons in August

The cosmos is offering up a double feature in August: a pair of supermoons culminating in a rare blue moon.

Catch the first show Tuesday evening as the full moon rises in the southeast, appearing slightly brighter and bigger than normal. That’s because it will be closer than usual, just 222,159 miles (357,530 kilometers) away, thus the supermoon label.

The moon will be even closer the night of Aug. 30 — a scant 222,043 miles (357,344 kilometers) distant. Because it’s the second full moon in the same month, it will be what’s called a blue moon.

“Warm summer nights are the ideal time to watch the full moon rise in the eastern sky within minutes of sunset. And it happens twice in August,” said retired NASA astrophysicist Fred Espenak, dubbed Mr. Eclipse for his eclipse-chasing expertise.

The last time two full supermoons graced the sky in the same month was in 2018. It won’t happen again until 2037, according to Italian astronomer Gianluca Masi, founder of the Virtual Telescope Project.

Masi will provide a live webcast of Tuesday evening’s supermoon, as it rises over the Coliseum in Rome.

A Corn Moon Ritual

Color of the day: Yellow
Incense of the day: Bay laurel

Native Americans and early settlers called the August Full Moon the Corn Moon. It was a time of giving thanks to the Earth and feasting. Corn was the focus of early harvest celebrations, as it was considered to be the seed of seeds and the giver of life. All the products from corn can be considered holy. Cornmeal, pollen, husks, and ears of corn were all used in fertility and prosperity magic. Corn Moon magic should be a simple ritual of giving thanks to Mother Earth. In doing so, you’ll create positive karma that will return blessings to you. On the night of the Corn Moon, stand outside in a field if possible. Carry an earthenware dish filled with cornmeal. Raise it to the Full Moon, then lower it to the Earth. Solemnly sprinkle the corn meal on the ground and speak the following words:
From seed to plant,
From plant to blossom,
From blossom to harvest,
I thank you, Mother Earth.
When done, be aware of the August night as the Moon casts a mellow glow over a land of plenty. Listen to the katydid scratching at the darkness. Smell the ripeness of summer’s end. And silently thank the ancient ones who gave us corn, the symbol of life itself.

Traditional Witchcraft c. 2014

Traditional Witchcraft

Witchcraft is often referred to as “The Old Religion” and “Craft of the Wise.” Witchcraft has been present since the beginning of humanity in many forms. It was never a defined, organized religion, particularly not a universal one, but it was everywhere, as it is now. Those who practice Witchcraft are called Witches, no matter what their sex. A very common misconception is that a warlock is a male Witch. This could not be further from the truth. Warlock means “Oath breaker” and can be applied to either sex. Basically it is someone who betrays the trust of a coven. Witches are not evil-doers, rather, they are the most moral, most aware and sensitive people you will ever come across. They realize that every action has a reaction in every reality. Witches abide by a code of “Harm none, do as thou will.” This rule can be interpreted in many ways, but in short, it means do as you wish, and be sure not intentionally harm any innocent.

Witches tend to be pantheists, that is they recognize the divine in all things. Most Witches in some fashion worship the Goddess and her consort, the Horned God. The Horned God is a deity of fertility and festivity, often represented by a man with deer antlers or a satyr-like being, as artefacts of Pan and Cernunnos depict. One can easily see now where the Christian concept of the devil originated. It is always wise to remember that the gods of the old religions become the devils of the new in many western cultures. So never have Witches worshipped “the devil” as Christianity portrays. We actually find the idea of personifying evil rather stupid, for if you give something a name, you give it power. Witches, likewise, don’t believe in Hell. We cannot believe in an “all-loving” god that would send its own children to damnation, simply because they did not worship him in a certain form. Instead, Witches believe in a transient-like afterlife, sometimes called the Summer-lands, as well as reincarnation. Most Witches practice magick or spell-craft, following along the lines of “harm none.” Magick cannot be defined as “black” or “white,” because of the complexity of the results. For more about magick, go to Magick, Symbols and Spell-craft.

What is the Modern Tradition of Witchcraft?

Usually people’s first reaction to ModTrad is “Isn’t that an oxymoron?.. How can something be modern and traditional?” Well, the key to it is that we examine the traditions and folklore of the past, and decipher a way to interpret them in a contemporary format that relates better to humanity’s needs today. Modtrad incorporates a system of careful research, reflection and ingenuity. Although most of us fantasize about living out in the middle of nowhere, being self-sufficient, close to the earth, the reality is that most of us lead urban-based lives. When one examines the eight sabats on the wheel of year, one discovers that they are planting/harvest/farming based. How does this relate to us now, living in the concrete jungle, lacking fields and livestock? How do we keep the meaning and intention in something that seems outdated? How does this reflect through all the aspects of the Craft, such as spell craft and our view of the Goddess? This is the challenge of Modern Traditional Witchcraft.

The Moon’s current phase for today and tonight is a Waxing Gibbous phase. Visible through most of the night sky setting a few hours before sunrise. This phase is when the moon is more than 50% illuminated but not yet a Full Moon. The phase lasts about 7 days with the moon becoming more illuminated each day until the Full Moon. During a Waxing Gibbous the moon rises in the east in mid-afternoon and is high in the eastern sky at sunset. The word Gibbous first appeared in the 14th century and has its roots in the Latin word “gibbosus” meaning humpbacked.

Weekly Horoscope Sunday, July 30 to Saturday, August 5, 2023

All Signs

Mercury will be retrograde from Aug. 23 to Sept. 15. However, Mercury slows down before that, hence my recommended “buffer dates” which are from Aug. 10 to Sept. 30. Naturally, Mercury always moves forward, but three or four times a year it “appears” to go backwards relative to planet Earth. Mercury has domain over everything that moves forward. Cars, trucks, ideas and words. When Mercury is retrograde, these are the things that tend to stall or glitch. Car problems. Buses are late. Traffic jams. Communications are confused. Missed appointments. Misunderstandings. (Each Mercury retrograde is in a different sign, which means it affects you differently.) Fortunately, it’s a wonderful time to finish old business. Important: Avoid buying pricey Mercury-related items like cars, trucks, cell phones and computers during the “buffer” dates Aug. 10 to Sept. 30. So say we all.

Aries (March 21-April 19)

This is a productive week! You will work hard. You will delegate to others. Very likely, whatever you do might boost your income now or in the future. Meanwhile, the Full Moon on Tuesday could create problems dealing with your kids. (Hissy fits and meltdowns). It can also trigger problems with romance. (These problems might begin several days before Tuesday’s Full Moon.) Patience is your best ally when you’re dealing with emotionally, upset people. (Including you.) Take a breath and remember it is your outgoing breath that really calms you. In and ooooooout. In and ooooooout. The good news is this weekend is a fabulous time to socialize! Friday is an amazing time for romance and Saturday is fun city!

Taurus (April 20-May 20)

Home and family continue to be your top priority. Many of you are entertaining at home as well as redecorating and making things look better. Mercury and Mars urge you to express your creativity and explore social outings, including sports and fun times with kids. Please note that as Mercury starts to slow down, you will likely hear from old flames and romantic partners from your past. Parents might hear from kids who have been AWOL. Tread carefully at the beginning of the week because Tuesday’s Full Moon creates a tug-of-war between home and family versus your professional obligations. Cope as best you can. Plan for fun times Friday and Saturday. Yay!

Gemini (May 21-June 20)

Very soon, your ruler Mercury will start to slow down before it actually goes retrograde on Aug 23. Be smart and stock the fridge because relatives you haven’t seen for ages might be camped on your doorstep. (Do you have an inflatable air mattress?) However, this Mercury retrograde energy will allow you to settle family matters that have been up in the air or double parked for too long. Now is the time to wrap things up and solidify domestic plans. Be careful at the beginning of the week because Tuesday’s Full Moon is accident-prone for your sign. Slow down and take it easy and pay attention to everything you do and say. Do this fast because you think and talk fast.

Cancer (June 21-July 22)

You will feel the effects of this particular Mercury retrograde more than other signs because it’s happening in your House of Communications, and that is the “home” of Mercury. This means that you can expect car problems, truck problems, motorcycle problems, public transportation delays this month and next. Communications with others will be jinxed. Computer problems are likely. Missed appointments, tardiness and misunderstandings about meeting places are just a few things that will be exasperating. Don’t freak out. Most of the problems of Mercury retrograde are minor, but they’re annoying. On the upside, you can finish papers, coursework and learning projects. Done!

Leo (July 23-Aug. 22)

During this particular Mercury retrograde, cheques in the mail will be late. Money and financial issues will stagnate. Tasks related to your possessions – dry-cleaning, mending, repairing will grind to a halt and things will sit there getting dusty. On the upside, this is a great time to finish financial matters that have been delayed along with issues about which you have been procrastinating. It will be easier to finish your To Do list versus starting new ventures. Don’t forget that this weekend promises fun socializing! (It’s possible to boost your income this week, as well.)

Virgo (Aug. 23-Sept. 22)

This week you’re happy to keep a low profile. Nevertheless, with your ruler Mercury in your sign plus fiery Mars, you will surface now and then to express your views in a confident way. Mercury is your ruler and when it goes retrograde this month, you will hear from people from your past, including ex-partners and old friends. Because this particular Mercury retrograde will be in your sign, you’ll be frazzled because of misplaced items, moments where you draw a blank, mixed-up communications, missed appointments and silly, goofy errors and delays. Fear not. You are not losing it. This is a temporary thing while Mercury retrograde is in your sign. Use this in a productive way by finishing old business, which will go easily and swiftly! You’ve got this.

Libra (Sept. 23-Oct. 22)

This is a popular time for you, which is why you’re reaching out more than usual to contact friends and interact with clubs and organizations. In particular, your interest in creative, artistic people is stronger. (Perhaps the theatre?) Be diplomatic at the beginning of this week because the Full Moon on Tuesday might create problems with your kids as well as romantic partners and social occasions. Fortunately, this tension is brief. It’s gone by the end of the week, which will then be a fabulous time to socialize! Meanwhile, this particular Mercury retrograde will help you to research and study history or anything from the past. You can use this!

Scorpio (Oct. 23-Nov. 21)

Heads up at the beginning of this week because Tuesday’s Full Moon might create some angst as energy builds up today and Monday before the Full Moon peaks on Tuesday. You might feel pulled between the demands of home and family versus the demands of your career or your public reputation. You might find yourself at odds with a parent or an authority figure. Handle this as gracefully as you can. Remember, you look good to others right now. Meanwhile, Mercury retrograde will start to attract old friends back into your life. You might also meet people you knew from clubs and organizations. Something might happen that makes you rethink future goals. Get ready for a fun-filled weekend starting on romantic Friday!

Sagittarius (Nov. 22-Dec. 21)

Starting today, you are floating along in an accident-prone “bubble”. Oh yeah. This means you have to pay attention to everything you say and do. Be vigilant for your own safety and welfare, especially because you will be a bit impulsive right now. (You want a change of scenery and more stimulation in your life!) Meanwhile, this particular Mercury retrograde is taking place at the top of your chart, which means you will hear from old bosses you haven’t heard from in a while, or parents or authority figures, even the police. You can use the influence of Mercury retrograde to finish a projected goal or project you’ve been putting off. This is the time to get ‘er done! Fun socializing this weekend!

Capricorn (Dec. 22-Jan. 19)

You might be ensnared in power struggles about shared property, taxes, debt or the ownership of something. They might involve your finances and the finances of others or shared responsibilities. Something a bit nasty might come to a head on Tuesday. Remember: Your first loss is your cheapest loss. (My father-in-law told me that years ago.) Meanwhile, Mercury retrograde will be in the part of your chart associated with travel, education, legal matters, and medicine. You might experience delays or mixed-up communications in these areas. If you’re dealing with important matters, double check details so you have no regrets later. Meanwhile, this weekend is a wonderful time to party and schmooze! Friday is a romantic day and Saturday is just plain fun!

Aquarius (Jan. 20-Feb. 18)

This week on Tuesday, there will be the only Full Moon in your sign all year. The build up to it is starting now. This is why you might be at odds with partners and close friends. Remember: Friendships are important to you. Meanwhile, life is short (and fat). Don’t waste your precious time embroiled in angry encounters with people who are important to you. The reason you feel strongly about issues is because these people matter to you. At one time, you had a vested interest in them. Wake up and smell the coffee. Meanwhile, Mercury retrograde might create delays in shared property and financial matters.

Pisces (Feb. 19-March 20)

As this week begins, the buildup of energy before Tuesday’s Full Moon might create problems with coworkers and issues related to pets or your health. Stay chill. Be part of the solution not part of the problem. Remember: Your objective is to be happy. Meanwhile, Mercury is starting to slow down in a few days, before it goes retrograde this month, and this astrological phenomenon will attract ex-partners and ex-spouses back into your world. (I once tried to hide in a remote aisle of a video store but got busted at the cash register.) Look your best when you go out because living well is the best revenge. Keep working because this will be like therapy. Fun weekend ahead!
