Stars, Dust and Nebula in NGC 6559

Explanation: When stars form, pandemonium reigns. A textbook case is the star forming region NGC 6559. Visible in the featured image are red glowing emission nebulas of hydrogen, blue reflection nebulas of dust, dark absorption nebulas of dust, and the stars that formed from them. The first massive stars formed from the dense gas will emit energetic light and winds that erode, fragment, and sculpt their birthplace. And then they explode. The resulting morass can be as beautiful as it is complex. After tens of millions of years, the dust boils away, the gas gets swept away, and all that is left is a bare open cluster of stars.

Doomed Star Eta Carinae

Image Credit & Copyright: NASAESAHubbleProcessing & LicenseJudy Schmidt

Explanation: Eta Carinae may be about to explode. But no one knows when – it may be next year, it may be one million years from now. Eta Carinae‘s mass – about 100 times greater than our Sun – makes it an excellent candidate for a full blown supernova. Historical records do show that about 170 years ago Eta Carinae underwent an unusual outburst that made it one of the brightest stars in the southern skyEta Carinae, in the Keyhole Nebula, is the only star currently thought to emit natural LASER light. This featured image brings out details in the unusual nebula that surrounds this rogue starDiffraction spikes, caused by the telescope, are visible as bright multi-colored streaks emanating from Eta Carinae’s center. Two distinct lobes of the Homunculus Nebula encompass the hot central region, while some strange radial streaks are visible in red extending toward the image right. The lobes are filled with lanes of gas and dust which absorb the blue and ultraviolet light emitted near the center. The streaks, however, remain unexplained.

Wicca, Witchcraft or Paganism? c. 2013

Wicca, Witchcraft or Paganism?

What’s the Difference, Anyway?

By , About.com

If you’re reading this page, chances are you’re either a Wiccan or Pagan, or you’re someone who’s interested in learning more about the modern Pagan movement. You may be a parent who’s curious about what your child is reading, or you might be someone who is unsatisfied with the spiritual path you’re on right now. Perhaps you’re seeking something more than what you’ve had in the past. You might be someone who’s practiced Wicca or Paganism for years, and who just wants to learn more.

For many people, the embracing of an earth-based spirituality is a feeling of “coming home”. Often, people say that when they first discovered Wicca, they felt like they finally fit in. For others, it’s a journey TO something new, rather than running away from something else.

Paganism is an Umbrella Term

Please bear in mind that there are dozens of different traditions that fall under the umbrella title of “Paganism”. While one group may have a certain practice, not everyone will follow the same criteria. Statements made on this site referring to Wiccans and Pagans generally refer to MOST Wiccans and Pagans, with the acknowledgement that not all practices are identical.

Not All Pagans are Wiccans

There are many Witches who are not Wiccans. Some are Pagans, but some consider themselves something else entirely.

Just to make sure everyone’s on the same page, let’s clear up one thing right off the bat: not all Pagans are Wiccans. The term “Pagan” (derived from the Latin paganus, which translates roughly to “hick from the sticks”) was originally used to describe people who lived in rural areas. As time progressed and Christianity spread, those same country folk were often the last holdouts clinging to their old religions. Thus, “Pagan” came to mean people who didn’t worship the god of Abraham.

In the 1950s, Gerald Gardner brought Wicca to the public, and many contemporary Pagans embraced the practice. Although Wicca itself was founded by Gardner, he based it upon old traditions. However, a lot of Witches and Pagans were perfectly happy to continue practicing their own spiritual path without converting to Wicca.

Therefore, “Pagan” is an umbrella term that includes many different spiritual belief systems – Wicca is just one of many.

Think of it this way:

Christian >  Lutheran or Methodist or Jehovah’s Witness

Pagan >  Wiccan or Asatru or Dianic or Eclectic Witchcraft

As if that wasn’t confusing enough, not all people who practice witchcraft are Wiccans, or even Pagans. There are a few witches who embrace the Christian god as well as a Wiccan goddess – the Christian Witch movement is alive and well! There are also people out there who practice Jewish mysticism, or “Jewitchery”, and atheist witches who practice magic but do not follow a deity.

What About Magic?

There are a number of people who consider themselves Witches, but who are not necessarily Wiccan or even Pagan. Typically, these are people who use the term “eclectic Witch” to apply to themselves. In many cases, Witchcraft is seen as a skill set in addition to or instead of a religious. A Witch may practice magic in a manner completely separate from their spirituality; in other words, one does not have to interact with the Divine to be a Witch.

Good Day WOTC Family and Friends! What is On Your Mind Today?

I am sorry today’s posts went up so late, but I haven’t been sleeping well again and was to exhausted yesterday to do anything more but cuddle with Star, Merlin, and Cleo on the couch. I will get part of Sunday’s posts done today and the rest tomorrow.  I am still very tired at my age and with my health difficulties 4 hours of broken sleep for a week doesn’t let my brain function as it normally does.

How are you doing today?

“We need the tonic of wildness…At the same time that we are earnest to explore and learn all things, we require that all things be mysterious and unexplorable, that land and sea be indefinitely wild, unsurveyed and unfathomed by us because unfathomable. We can never have enough of nature.”

Henry David Thoreau

New posting will be starting this Sunday, July 9th. I hope you enjoy the extra things I will be adding. There will be 12 posts Monday through Saturday and 13 on Sunday. The extra one on Sunday is the weekly horoscopes.

Overnight Karma

Mildred, the self-appointed arbiter of the community’s morals, kept sticking her nose into other people’s business. Several members were unappreciative of her activities, but they feared her enough to maintain their silence. She made a mistake, however, when she accused George, a new member, of being an alcoholic after she saw his pickup truck parked in front of the town’s only bar one afternoon. She commented to George and others that everyone seeing it there would know what he was doing.

George, a man of few words, stared at her for a moment and just walked away. He didn’t explain, defend, or deny, he said nothing. Later that evening, George quietly parked his pickup in front of Mildred’s house… and left it there all night.

Good Day WOTC Family and Friends!

“I learned this, at least, by my experiment: that if one advances confidently in the direction of his dreams, and endeavors to live the life which he has imagined, he will meet with a success unexpected in common hours.”

Henry David Thoreau

I am slowly marching to my dream of bring WOTC back to its glory days when Lady Abyss was alive and could help me after turning her life’s work over to me. In many ways with including less posts I feel I am failing her. She would put out between 15 and 30 posts a day where as from the feed back from the surveys last month I am only doing a third of that. So, I guess I have a choice to make either put out more posts and possibly lose some follower or stick with what I am doing as the visitors and views keep going downhill. I am leaning more towards a few more posts covering a wider range of topics daily. If you feel I am blowing up you inbox I apologize but partly for my small income from WOTC which I will be getting paid every 3 months for the time I put in everyday instead of every 2 months and hopefully bring you more content that you can use or find interesting I will be going with a few more posts starting this Sunday. No, it will not go all the way up to 30 posts a day but probably around 12 or 13 instead of only 8. I know I will never be rich writing this blog but I would like to get a little more each month to go back to being paid at least a little every other month.

For anyone who decides to leave because of more emails from WOTC I wish you well on your journey and thank you for your support. For all of you who stay I thank you for sticking with us and for your support.

Interesting question put to me by one of my students, “Do you just talk the talk or do you really walk the walk of a pagan and witch?”

So, I pose the same question to you.

To me walking the walk means being out of the broom closet to help other witches and pagans to do the same. We do not have to be ashamed or feel the need to hide your spiritual path. The more of us who stand up for our beliefs that more the world around us will accept witches and pagans. I am not saying to come out of the broom closet if it would have a major negative impact on your life. I am saying if you can step out of the musky broom closet do so proudly and with your head held high!

Full Moon General Information for July 2023

July’s full Buck Moon rises after sunset on Monday, July 3—the eve of Independence Day! This is also a supermoon that will appear bigger and brighter than average. See more information about July’s Full Moon from why we call it the “Buck” Moon to best days by the Moon.

When to See the Full Moon in July 2023

July’s full Buck Moon will rise on Monday, July 3, reaching peak illumination at 7:39 A.M. Eastern Time. It will be below the horizon at that time, so plan to look towards the southeast after sunset to watch it rise into the sky. Being the day before the Fourth of July, it should make for dazzling fireworks displays!

→ Consult our Moonrise and Moonset Calculator to see precisely when the Buck Moon will be visible in your area!

Behold the Full Buck Supermoon!

July’s full Buck Moon orbits closer to Earth than many of the other full Moons this year, making one of the four supermoons of 2023! At its nearest point, the Buck Moon will be 224,895.4 miles (361,934 km) from Earth, which means that August’s Blue Moon will be the only supermoon that is closer to our planet this year.

While a supermoon is technically bigger and brighter than a regular full Moon, it only appears about 7% larger—which can be an imperceptible difference to the human eye, depending on other conditions.

→ Want to really see a huge full Moon? Read about the “Moon illusion” to discover how and when to look for one!

Why Is It Called the Buck Moon?

The full Moon names used by The Old Farmer’s Almanac come from a number of places, including Native American, Colonial American, and European sources. Traditionally, each full Moon name was applied to the entire lunar month in which it occurred, not solely to the full Moon.

The Buck Moon

The full Moon in July is called the Buck Moon because the antlers of male deer (bucks) are in full-growth mode at this time. Bucks shed and regrow their antlers each year, producing a larger and more impressive set as the years go by.

Alternative July Moon Names

Several other names for this month’s Moon also reference animals, including Feather Moulting Moon (Cree) and Salmon Moon, a Tlingit term indicating when fish returned to the area and were ready to be harvested.

Plants are also featured prominently in July’s Moon names. Some of our favorites are Berry Moon (Anishinaabe), Moon When the Chokecherries are Ripe (Dakota), Month of the Ripe Corn Moon (Cherokee), and Raspberry Moon (Algonquin, Ojibwe).

Thunder Moon (Western Abenaki) and Halfway Summer Moon (Anishinaabe) are alternative variants that refer to the stormy weather and summer season.

The Full Moon for this month will occur early in the month on Monday, July 3rd. The New Moon will happen later in July on Monday, July 17th.

The Full Thunder Moon of July

July’s full moon is called the Full Thunder Moon, after the frequent thunderstorms that roll in during early summer. Thunderstorms are more likely to form in humid environments during summer because of the moist, hot air rising from the ground to the higher, colder parts of our atmosphere. The Full Thunder Moon is, therefore, a warning sign for a surprisingly dangerous time of the year.

Did you know that you are more likely to get hit by lightning twice in your lifetime than win the Powerball lottery, and that summer is usually when most lightning fatalities happen? As the Full Thunder Moon rises to prominence during the warm summer months, people are more likely to be taking part in outdoor activities, which increases their risk of being hit by the frequent thunder and lightning strikes that happen during this period. Everyone knows to avoid trees and bodies of water during thunderstorms, but that basic precaution alone is not enough.

According to experts, you should head inside a safe building immediately when you hear thunder, no matter how safe you think you are. Lightning can strike from up to 10 miles away, and nothing can protect you when you’re outdoors. Wearing rubber soles or crouching down low will not stop lightning from hurting you. Lying down on the ground is an even worse idea, as it’ll make you even more vulnerable to currents traveling through the ground.

If you do get caught outdoors with no way to make it into a building safely, sheltering in a completely closed, all-metal car is an option as long as you don’t touch anything metal. You should also avoid open areas such as fields. Just keep moving as fast as you can until you reach shelter. If you happen to be in a group, spread out so that if one of you gets struck, the others can provide emergency CPR and other help. Remember that it’s completely safe to touch a person after they’ve been struck. Lightning-related deaths are most often caused by the heart stopping due to the sudden surge of electricity, and so it is very important to administer CPR to a lightning strike victim immediately.

Ultimately, the best way to avoid being caught outdoors in a thunderstorm is to take a little of your time each day to monitor the weather situation, and have backup plans for shelter if you’re heading outdoors. That said, being indoor doesn’t necessarily guarantee that you’re safe either. Make sure to stay far away from any plumbing, metal objects, electronic devices and equipment, or anything that might conducts electricity. Avoid windows or doors at all costs. Not even concrete walls and floors are safe, since they contain metal rods that conduct electricity, so never allow yourself to lean against concrete walls or come into contact with concrete floors. The risk of a strike remains for 30 minutes after the last flash of lightning or peal of thunder.

The Full Thunder Moon is a great time for you to brush up on your lightning safety knowledge and educate other people as well. Feel free to head to the wild outdoors to observe deers whose velvety antlers are growing out during this period – which is why July’s full moon is also known as the Full Buck Moon – but also make sure to take the necessary safety precautions.

Let’s Have Some Fun with a Contest – Prize is a 5-Card Animal Spirit or Helper Reading

Who remembers the name of these cartoon characters below from Saturday morning cartoons? Please only put the charter’s initials so you do not give their names away to others.

In my house as a child the only time I got to eat a meal while sitting in front of the television was my breakfast on Saturday morning as long as my mom did not consider it messy. So, I think I ate cereal or toast with peanut butter on it every Saturday for most of my young childhood. After my dad crossed in 1970 I did not watch cartoons as much on Saturday mornings because whether he was at home or work, he drove an ambulance for what is now a large company in Illinois, providing he was not out on a call. I remember these times as some of the best in my childhood!

Who remembers the name of these cartoon characters below from Saturday morning cartoons? Please only put the charter’s initials so you do not give their names away to others.

This cartoon was mine and my dad’s all-time favorites!

I watch reruns of both of these and other cartoons from my childhood any time I can. I will try to find pictures of the characters for coloring.

Let’s really let our inner child out to play and have some non-grown-up fun this weekend!

Prize for the right answers for both pictures wins a 5 card Animal Spirit Guide or Helper reading FREE! This reading is for the 5 elements, Air, Fire, Water, Earth, and Spirit, that are inside all of us. All entries must be in the comment section below. REMEBER INTIALS ONLY OF THE NAMES. Anyone putting the full name of the characters will be disqualified from the contest and your comment removed. If I like your comment and say “email me” in a reply to your comment, it means you win a reading. Please put 3 dates and times that would work for you on or after Saturday, July 8, 2023 for your free reading, and I will pick the one that fits into my schedule the best.

Contest ends on Tuesday, July 4, 2023, and the post will be removed around 8:00 PM CDT on this date. Your reading can be scheduled starting on Saturday, July 8, 2023.

Good luck and have some fun!

Let’s Have Some More Fun Coloring – 2 Printable Pages

Email your colored picture to ladybeltane@witchesofthecraft.com and they will be in a post. Pictures to be posted must be received in an email to me by 8:00 PM CDT on Saturday, July 8, 2023 and have been saved as a jpeg file or else WordPress won’t let me post them.

Have fun letting your inner child guide you for the colors you want to use. You do not have to stay with the colors the characters were in the cartoon. Sorry I couldn’t find any bigger pictures to post.

Hello Our WOnderful WOTC Family and Friends! What is On Your Mind Today?

We have this in abundance in our home. I feel very lucky and blessed to have a man that loves me unconditionally and fur kids that do to! I feel the same about all of them.

What is your take on this quote?

This morning I did something hard, I opened the metal box my former familiar’s ashes came in, in 2007 to remove the last of his hair to be put into a clear container. I had just done the same with Dreamer’s hair and nail clippings so I am a little melancholy as I type this. My Boots was gotten as a family dog in August 1992 but it was apparent from the first day I met him he and I had a special bond. He crossed the rainbow bridge in November 2007 after having multiple grand and petti mal seizures over a six hour period. Was the decision super hard to assist him into eternal sleep? Hell, yes it was. At the time I was going to school to earn my veterinary assistant certification and as luck or a deity had decided I had just finished the lessons about seizures, so at least I knew what was happening and could make sure he was safe while in one. They started about 5:00 AM and did not stop until his assisted crossing of the bridge was done.

As the human who is in charge of keeping a furry family member fed, plenty of water, going out for bathroom breaks and exercise or keeping a litter box clean it can be a very hard task when it comes time to decide if our furry family members quality of life has gone down hill enough, not as the furry’s mom or dad but looking at it from a clinical distances (I know easier said than done), to assist them into their eternal sleep or not. I had to stand back and look at things through the eyes and brain of an animal medical person and tuck my breaking heart away for a little while to make a decision that was best for them. Yes, with Boots I could have spent a lot of money with a vet specialist and anti-seizure medications but after the third grand mal seizure, there were I think 6 or 8 total, his hearing had gone and he had trouble trying to get up from the floor onto his favorite blanket. He was whimpering as he had always went outside to relive himself that’s what he wanted. So, I picked him up and carried him outside than to my astonishment he got up walked to his favorite bush in the yard and did his things. Immediately afterwards he collapsed on the ground in another grand mal. Now in between the grand mal seizures he was having petit mal ones too. How many? I have no idea as I lost count after about 20. He was about 14 1/2 years old at the time of his crossing, he had come to live with myself, my mom, and children when he was 5 1/2 weeks old.

Boots was loved, well cared for, and played with all his physical life just as Dreamer was. Now I know they are together playing with Dreamer’s mom Gyspy and Dreamer’s pups that went before her. They both come often to visit. I feel Boots talked Dreamer into visiting us so soon after she crossed knowing how much his visits have helped me over the years since his crossing.

The main reason for this post is while we may not want to give up a furry family member when they are old and in pain or even young but injured badly we have to take what they need to be comfortable and have a good quality of life. If the way they have lived their life has been really compromised we need to do the right thing for them and let them go to cross to the other side of the veil. If you tell them or better yet ask them to come visit you after they have crossed the bridge I know for a fact that 9 out of 10 times they will do just that! Humans who have crossed come it they feel like it, if they don’t try another day.
