The 8 Lunar Phases

There are 8 lunar phases the Moon goes through in its 29.53 days lunar cycle. The 4 major Moon phases are Full Moon, New Moon, First Quarter and Last Quarter. Between these major phases, there are 4 minor ones: the Waxing Crescent, Waxing Gibbous, Waning Gibbous and Waning Crescent. For more info on the Moon Cycle and on each phase check out Wikipedia Lunar Phase page.

The Moon’s current phase for today and tonight is a Last Quarter phase. This phase occurs roughly 3 weeks after the New Moon when the Moon is three quarter of the way through it’s orbit around the earth. If you live in the northern hemisphere the Moons left side will be illuminated and the right side will be dark. For those of you in the southern hemisphere it will be the opposite with the right side illuminated. Also called a Third Quarter phase, it will rise around midnight on the eastern horizon and set in the west around noon the next day. In the days following the Third Quarter Phase the Moon’s illumination will decrees each day until the New Moon.

Today’s Last Quarter Phase

The Last Quarter on July 28 has an illumination of 46%. This is the percentage of the Moon illuminated by the Sun. The illumination is constantly changing and can vary up to 10% a day. On July 28 the Moon is 22.55 days old. This refers to how many days it has been since the last New Moon. It takes 29.53 days for the Moon to orbit the Earth and go through the lunar cycle of all 8 Moon phases.

A Little Humor for Your Day

When I become old

When I’m a little old lady, then I’ll live with my children and bring them great joy.
To repay all I’ve had from each girl and boy I shall draw on the walls and scuff up the floor; run in and out without closing the door.
I’ll hide frogs in the pantry, socks under my bed. And whenever they scold me, I’ll hang my head.
I’ll run and I’ll romp, always fritter away ….. the time to be spent doing chores every day.
I’ll pester my children when they are on the phone. As long as they’re busy I won’t leave them alone.
Hide candy in closets, rocks in a drawer … and never pick up what I drop on the floor.
Dash off to the movies and not wash a dish. I’ll plead for allowance whenever I wish.
I’ll stuff up the plumbing and deluge the floor. As soon as they’ve mopped it, I’ll flood it some more.
When they correct me, I’ll lie down and cry, kicking and screaming, not a tear in my eye.
I’ll take all their pencils and flashlights, and then .. when they buy new ones, I’ll take them again.
I’ll spill glasses of milk to complete every meal …. Eat my banana and just drop the peel.
Put toys on the table, spill jam on the floor. I’ll break lots of dishes as though I were four.
What fun I shall have, what joy it will be to Live with my children….just the way that they lived with me!

Full Moon Ritual by Raymond Buckland c.2016

pent

FULL MOON RITUAL

The moon is a powerful tool to use in Witchcraft. Each phase of the moon has its own power, and if we perform spells or rituals to coincide with the phase of the moon, our magick will be stronger.

After erecting circle at esbat but before cookies and wine, kneel with hands held high:

When the moon rides high
as she crosses the sky
and the stars on her gown trail behind
then we wiccan below
are all aglow
just to see her so brightly enshrined.

On the night of the moon
as I sing to the tune
of the Lady who watches above
I raise high my song
as she glides by so strong
and I bask in the light of her light.

Rhythmic chant

Isis, Astarte, Diana, Hecate,
Demeter, Kali, Inanna
(Repeat as often as wanted)

Lovely Lady, you have been known by so many people. Aphrodite, Territory, Diana, Ea, Freyja, Gana Isis and so many more have been your names. It is with these names do I adore and worship you with your Lord by your side, do I give you due honour and invite you to join me on this, your special night.

Sit and meditate

Descend my Lady; descend I pray thee and speak with me, your child.

Meditate; if you do not feel the spirit, do the following:

I am she who watches over thee. Mother of you all. Know that I rejoice that you do not forget me. To pay homage at the full of the moon is meet and right and brings joy unto yourself, even as it does me. Know that, with my good Lord, I weave the skein of life for everyone. I am at the beginning of life and at its end: The Maiden, The Mother, The Crone.

Where ever you may be, if you seek me know that I am always here for I abide deep within you. Look, then, within yourself if you would seek me. I am Life and I am Love. Find me and rejoice, for love is my music and laughter is my song. Be true to me and I will ever be true to you. Love is the law and love is the bond.

So Mote it Be!

From Raymond Buckland’s Complete Book of Witchcraft

Merry Meet dear Sisters, Brothers, and Friends, Welcome to WOTC! Thought for Today

I am having a very bad fibromyalgia flare today and it hurts to type so Monday posts will not go up until Monday unless it calms down later today.

After reading this I was reminded of the book The Four Agreements where it talks about a person’s best can change from minute to minute depending on how that person feels mentally or emotionally or spiritually or physically or a combination of any of these things. So if you cannot always be a 100% when doing something do not feel guilty or stressed because you are doing your best in that exact moment.

If you want to see some information on any tradition of witchcraft, please put it in the comment section or email Lady Carla Beltane at ladybeltane@witchesofthecraft.com. I will try to find some information to post about it.

May your and your family’s lives be filled with all things positive!

Blessed be.

7 Things You Should Know About Stonehenge

Get the facts on the iconic ancient monument, including how it once ended up on the auction block and what the wizard Merlin and Charles Darwin have to do with it.

1. Stonehenge was built in phases.

Around 3000 B.C. a circular earthwork was constructed at the site, consisting of a ditch (dug using tools made from antlers) with an inner and outer bank. Inside the bank were 56 pits, which became known as the Aubrey Holes, after antiquarian John Aubrey, who identified them in 1666. Archaeologists estimate Stonehenge was home to 150 or more cremation burials from approximately 3000 B.C. to 2300 B.C., and they’ve called it Britain’s biggest known cemetery of the time.

The two types of stones at the center of the monument, the large sarsens and smaller bluestones, arrived at the site sometime around 2500 B.C. Afterward, they were shaped using various stoneworking techniques and arranged in formations. The final stage of construction was a ring of pits now referred to as the Y holes, dug sometime between 1600 B.C. to 1500 B.C. The Y holes encircled another ring of pits called the Z holes, which were dug at an earlier time and surrounded the sarsens. Researchers are unclear as to whether the Y and Z holes served any purpose. It’s also unknown how long Stonehenge continued to be used after the Y holes were dug.

2. It’s a mystery how some stones got to the site.

3. Stonehenge once was put up for auction.

4. Theories abound about Stonehenge’s purpose.

5. Summer solstice gatherings were banned at Stonehenge.

6. Darwin studied worms there.

7. Stonehenge is just one of several prehistoric stone circles in Great Britain.

Moon Phase

The current moon phase for July 21st, 2024 is the Full Moon phase.

On this day, the moon is 14.89 days old and 99.56% illuminated with a tilt of 83.177°. The approximate distance from Earth to the moon is 372,232.14 km and the moon sign is Capricorn.

The Moon phase for July 21st, 2024 is the Full Moon phase. In this phase, the moon is 100% illuminated when seen from Earth (hence the name Full Moon).

The Full Moon happens when the moon is on the opposite side of the Earth from the Sun. The sunlight fully illuminated the moon, and this is what we call being “full”. The moon will be visible throughout the night sky as it rises at sunset in the east, transits the meridian at midnight, before setting at sunrise in the west.

The specific point at which the Full Moon occurs can be measured down to a fraction of a second. The time that passes between full moons is called the Synodic month and is 29.530587981 days long.

Fun fact: lunar eclipses can only happen within a few days of the Full Moon, but they don’t happen for every Full Moon because the moon’s orbit has a 5.1° tilt around the Earth compared to Earth’s orbit around the Sun. Only when the intersection of these two orbits is pointing towards the centre of the Moon do we get a lunar eclipse.
