Good Day WOTC Family and Friends Here is a Song for Today

I Am Pagan Lyrics and Video by Spiral Rhythm

I am pagan, and I’m proud
I am pagan, gonna shout it loud
I am pagan, want the world to know
That I follow the Goddess
and she rocks my soul

Don’t need your bible
I’ve got the wisdom of the crone
Don’t need your heaven
Into this life I’m reborn
No ten commandments
One fills the bill
An’ it harm none, do what you will

Don’t need your churches
The world’s my sacred space
Don’t need your angels
I’ve got fairies in their place
We raise the spirit
Most every night
When we dance the fire
in the pale moonlight

Well you take your path
And I’ll take mine
A little tolerance
And we’ll both be fine
Keep an open mind
It’ll set you free
And Goddess bless,
so mote it be

Are you pagan? Are you proud?
Are you pagan? Then shout it loud!
If you’re pagan,
let the whole world know
That you follow the Goddess
‘cause she rocks your soul

The Celtic Tree Calendar – following the lunar cycle

Celtic Tree Calendar information from ireland-calling.com

The Celtic Tree Calendar is based on the ogham alphabet and its association with trees.

It consists of 13 months, each 28 days long, following the lunar cycle, as Roman accounts have suggested the Druids did, with one extra day representing the 23rd December, the ‘Day of Creation’.

Each of the 13 months is represented by a tree together with its ogham letter.

Ogham, the mysterious language of the trees The Origins of the Ogham alphabet are still a mystery for many historians, but it is primarily thought to be an early form of the Irish written Language.

The calendar was conceived by the British poet and scholar Robert Graves. It was an idea put forward in his book The White Goddess, a historical grammar of poetic myth, first published in 1948.

The book focused on the mythology of Ireland, Britain, Europe and the Middle East, interpreting it in Grave’s individual and poetic style.

As historical accounts of ancient Druids are scarce, many of Graves’ ideas regarding the Celtic Tree Calendar were based on the works of Irish historian Ruaidhrí Ó Flaithbheartaigh, (Roderick O’Flaherty). Ó Flaithbheartaigh had published Ogygia in 1685, an elaborate history of Ireland that journeys back to the time of myths and legends and contains within it a chapter on understanding the ancient ogham alphabet.

Graves’ works may also have been influenced by the 14th century Book of Ballymote which contains a chapter on the ogham in which many varieties of the alphabet appear in the form of several diagrams thought to be used as secret codes.

Although the calendar is quite new in a historical sense, its influences lie within ancient Celtic mythology and folklore. It is a beautiful example of how modern spiritual beliefs and the customs of ancient times can be combined to form something enchanting.

Aries (March 21-April 19)

Today you should be very careful to the interactions you are having with persons of the opposite sex. This is because someone might not have the righteous intentions with you and you might fall into an unexpected trap.

It might not be anything of great importance but you don’t need any troubles in your life now, not even small ones.

Taurus (April 20-May 20)

This Friday it seems you will be all focused on your roots and on the place you are coming from. Maybe you will even have a trip to the place where you grew up.

The melancholy will be especially big for those who reside abroad from their original home. Maybe it’s a good time to reconnect with your family or long lost relatives to whom you haven’t spoken in a while.

Gemini (May 21-June 20)

Today is going to be quite a peaceful day in terms of changes and personal activities but those natives whom are establishing contacts abroad, whom are living abroad or purchasing something from abroad will have to deal with some minor troubles.

Nothing to worry about, just minor delays that might prompt them to change some of their plans.

Cancer (June 21-July 22)

This Friday the center of interest for you changes in the direction of your love life. This is not necessarily a good thing because there isn’t everything to be all romantic and lovey gooey.

Some deep issues might surface, especially involving hidden feelings that can no longer stay hidden. These things will give you some headaches for the following days.

Leo (July 23-Aug. 22)

Maybe it’s time to focus more on the way you look and on your general health. It might not be a bad idea to start going to the gym or go buy yourself a whole new wardrobe.

Such changes will make you feel a lot better about yourself and even give you a sense of purpose for these days. However, you should double these changes with a great mood in order for them to work.

Virgo (Aug. 23-Sept. 22)

Everything you say or do the following days will have a great impact on your life. It might not define the outcome of something important but will teach you important lessons.

So make sure you don’t take any unnecessary risks or follow others ambitions. Be in charge with yourself completely and don’t ever abide by the rules you’ve already established.

Libra (Sept. 23-Oct. 22)

You might find it hard to concentrate even to the most mundane of tasks today. Your friends might also contribute to a feeling of anxiety and uncertainty due to them making all kinds of jokes and propositions.

You should mind your own priorities and stay out of trouble. You should also avoid any nutritional excesses as well as smoke less.

Scorpio (Oct. 23-Nov. 21)

Professionally speaking, it seems you are exactly where you need to be. Everything is going according to plan and even the apparent troubles you are having are just a way of making yourself work more efficiently.

You can be promised some unexpected news that will unravel some propositions and occasions you definitely don’t want to miss.

Sagittarius (Nov. 22-Dec. 21)

Your emotions are blooming today and this means you will be in touch with this sentimental side of yours for the whole day. You are able to broaden your horizon, talk about your feelings and in general get to know yourself better.

Not only the above but you also feel surrounded by a general sense of harmony and it seems that you will feel like everyone is supporting you.

Capricorn (Dec. 22-Jan. 19)

In the first part of the day you will be feeling all emotional and in need for affection. This means that you will be actively searching for the company of those around you that can offer you a general sense of security.

However, such a mood is temporary as by the end of the day you will have gained your confidence back and everything will get to normal.

Aquarius (Jan. 20-Feb. 18)

Today all personal activities or activities that require a small number of people are positively influenced so this means you will be successful in your personal endeavors.

You should however try to be as diplomatic and restrained as possible because you never know when people you trusted and considered close could turn on you.

Pisces (Feb. 19-March 20)

It’s a great time for well established couples to make another step together and get things to the next level. It is also a great time for families to make important decisions and change things in the family dynamics.

In any case, try to talk with those around you, share with them your worries and fears and make sure you get them resolved.

Sorry But I Cannot Post Today

I am typing this trying not to cry to hard, so I don’t make too many typos. THis has not been proof read either. I thank you for letting me pour my heart out again in a safe place! I have been up since 1:30 AM CDT with only 4 hours of sleep. Dreamer’s back legs are getting worse, but the doctor changed her medication 2 days ago and we are hoping it makes a difference. This is the last thing to try before we send her in to her eternal sleep.

This morning when it was time to take all of our fur kids out it took her 6 tries to be able to stand up, she went down the four steps fine but I had to help her back up them. Which is better than Star who is afraid to go down the new safer stairs we put in on Tuesday afternoon. But to be fair to both of the ladies I had a hard time being able to stand and go down and up the stairs this morning too. It looks like only our brave, protective male Merlin, who scared a poor baby rabbit by barking at it, likes the new stairs or he just doesn’t give a dam as long as he can get to his favorite bathroom spot.

Today we will be installing a ramp outside for Dreamer and Star to use. As our Cleo is 14 years old and hesitant to jump down off the cough or go down and up the new stairs, I am pretty sure she will choose the ramp also.

The ramp we got was given to us by a couple whose Chihuahua crossed over a few months ago. We need to make a couple of small adjustments to it, but Big Dawg and I work great on home repair and improvement stuff as we found out installing the new stairs.

Please say a prayer or light a candle for whatever is best for Dreamer be it that the new medicine helps or it is time for her to cross to be free from pain and whatever age she enjoyed being the most.

If any of you ever want to talk or vent or scream or need a prayer said and/or a candle lit please contact me at ladybeltane@witchesofthecraft.com. I am not a licensed therapist but I am an ordained minister so anything you want to talk about goes no further than my listening to you. If it wasn’t for first my Coven Life family when my mom crossed and than you my wonderful WOTC family helping me through the last 4 years or so I don’t know what shape my mind, bod, or spirit would be in. Thank you are inaquetue words for what my heart feels in graitude to each one of you for followingWOTC and “listening” to me when I need to pour out my feelings in a safe place. I hope WOTC can become a place for us all to feel safe sharing our laughs, happiness, sadness, losses, and any other thing you might like to share with us.

MAY THE GODDESSES AND GODS KEEP YOU SAFE IN THEIR WARM BRACE AND CONTENT IN YOUR LIFE! iF YOU WOULD LIKE TO ACCEPT THEM I SEND EACH OF YOU A RAINBOW OF BLESSINGS FROM MY HEART TO YOURS.

Ticks Suck. Here’s A Guide To Identifying Them And Avoiding Bites

Ticks aren’t known as beach-lovers, so ecologist Dan Salkeld and a colleague were surprised when they found 180 ticks in less than a mile on a coastal trail near Muir Beach in California one day in 2016.

“Contrary to most people, we were delighted at the high numbers of ticks! It was exciting in terms of sample sizes and data,” says Salkeld, whose findings were published in June.

But it’s also sobering. For years, people who track black-legged ticks — the kind that carry Lyme disease — have been finding them in further flung territory, though still in mostly traditional habitats of forested areas with tall grasses and leaf litter.

Now, “as the numbers expand, we see ticks in areas that we don’t think of as traditional habitat,” Pritt says.

That trend has continued, with ticks are showing up in places previously deemed safe from the disease-carrying arachnids, from those coastal California beach areas to manicured lawns in the Northeast. The sheer number of ticks may be forcing them to branch out into new habitats, Mayo Clinic parasitologist Bobbi Pritt theorizes.

And, more of them appear to be carrying pathogens. Pritt’s lab tests tens of thousands of ticks; over the last three years, they’ve found that more and more of the ticks carry the bacteria that causes anaplasmosis, a disease that can cause headache, fever and chills and severe illness if treatment is delayed.

It all adds up to more illness: tick-borne diseases are at an all-time high, with about 50,000 cases reported each year — and far more going unreported.

While Lyme disease is by far the most prevalent, accounting for nearly 35,000 cases in 2019, ticks also carry pathogens that can make you allergic to red meat or cause acute respiratory distress. In rare cases, tick-borne diseases are fatal. Anaplasmosis is the second-most common tick-borne disease, with nearly 8,000 cases reported in 2019.

Here’s what you need to know about what kinds of ticks to watch out for, where — and what to do if you get bitten.

Check your local tick forecast

Your personal disease risk is highly dependent on your location.

Tick prevalence hinges on a number of local factors that make sweeping generalizations tricky, says Dr. George Dempsey of East Hampton Family Medicine and Bay Area Lyme Foundation’s Lyme Disease Biobank. That’s why he’s skeptical when he hears predictions for upcoming tick seasons.

“Every year they say it’s going to be a big year – either because of acorns or cold winters or warm winters…” he says, but all of those factors vary from one location to the next.

Currently, a mild winter plus a hot, humid summer in the Midwest is bringing out ticks earlier than usual, for example. “It’s prime time – ticks are already out and about in Minnesota,” says Elizabeth Schiffman, epidemiologist supervisor at the Minnesota Department of Health.

Regional differences are shifting as well. In East Hampton, New York, Dempsey is seeing more Lone Star ticks, a relative newcomer to the area, and fewer black-legged ticks — resulting in less Lyme disease. And back on that Muir Beach trail in California, Salkeld’s team got its second surprise when they tested the ticks they found.

“Our prediction would have been that they didn’t have Lyme, but they were just as high as ticks in woodland areas,” he says, leading him to pose the question in his study: Should infection prevalence in ticks be reported at a hyper-local level — possibly even for a single trail?

What does it mean for those of us trying to stay away from ticks? Be familiar with the ticks in your area, Pritt says. (Try this field map from the University of Rhode Island’s TickEncounter website.) And note that your state or county health department is your best bet for local tick information.

Know your tick types

These are the main types you may encounter in the U.S.

The black-legged tick, often referred to as a deer tick, can carry Lyme disease, babesiosis, ehrlichiosis, anaplasmosis and powassan virus. An adult full-grown black-legged tick is the size of a sesame seed; a nymph is the size of a poppy seed. It’s found in the eastern half of the U.S. Black-legged ticks near the Pacific Coast are a cousin of this tick, known as the Western black-legged tick.

The Lone Star tick is aggressive; instead of “questing” from a blade of grass like a black-legged tick, it may pursue a person 50-75 feet away. “People could be hanging out on their deck and they’ll crawl up on them,” Dempsey says.

They can carry ehrlichiosis, heartland virus, tularemia and Southern tick-associated rash illness. Their bite may also trigger alpha-gal syndrome, which can cause an allergy to meat. Adult females have a white dot on their backs.

Its range includes a large swath of the country from Iowa to Texas and everywhere east of there.

The Gulf Coast tick is a close relation.

The American dog tick, also known as a wood tick, can carry Rocky Mountain Spotted Fever, one of the deadliest tick-borne diseases, and tularemia. This tick is much bigger than a black-legged tick, so people are more likely to spot them when they latch on. It’s found in the eastern two thirds of the country and California.

The Rocky Mountain wood tick can spread Colorado Tick Fever in addition to Rocky Mountain Spotted Fever and tularemia. It ranges primarily in the northern Rocky Mountain region.

The Asian long-horned tick A new species landed in the U.S. in 2017, when it was spotted for the first time on a sheep in New Jersey. It’s now been noted in at least 15 states in the Midwest and East coast. Female ticks do not need to mate to lay eggs, and thousands can be found together, making grassy areas appear to be moving. They have not yet been found to transmit disease in the U.S.

How to avoid getting bitten

To avoid a tick encounter, you’ll want to be vigilant about taking precautions whenever you’re spending a significant amount of time outdoors in tick territory, whether you’re hiking or mowing your lawn. Fortunately, the same prevention techniques work for all types of ticks, Pritt says:

1. Get dorky: Repelling ticks starts with your outfit. Choose long sleeves and pants if possible. “And it may feel dorky, but tucking your pants into your socks gives ticks less access into the areas they can bite,” says Pritt, who wears white coveralls and duct-tapes the legs to her socks when going on tick drags. Spray exposed skin with a good repellent. And treat clothes likely to be worn in tick habitat ahead of time with a permethrin repellent for the greatest protection.

2. Strip: After your adventure – even if it’s just mowing the lawn – the easiest way to make sure ticks stay outside is to disrobe as soon as possible — shed all your clothes on a porch before going inside to keep any hangers-on outside if possible — jump in the shower, check for ticks and scrub. Remember that disease-carrying ticks can be tiny: at the nymph stage, when it’s likely to bite you, a black-legged tick is the size of a poppy seed. Don’t forget about pets and kids. Check them for ticks outside; otherwise, a tick can fall off a dog inside and bite you.

3. Disinfect: Throw discarded clothes into the dryer on high heat for at least six minutes to kill any stragglers.

What to do if you do get bitten

1. Don’t panic. It’s a hard rule to follow, Pritt admits, but remember that not every tick carries a harmful bacteria or virus.

2. Forget the folk remedies: “Grab a pair of fine tipped tweezers, remove as quickly as possible as close to skin as you can by pulling it out in a smooth, continuous motion without twisting it,” Pritt says. And don’t light a match or roll it in butter, as in fact, those methods often result in only partial removal.

3. Save it: Put the tick in a plastic bag in the freezer, especially if you think it may have been attached a long time, which may increase the risk of Lyme disease transmission. That way if you decide to see a doctor, they’ll be able to identify the type of tick that bit you, and even test it for disease-causing bacteria. Keep in mind, though, that you may not get infected even if the tick tests positive, Dempsey says.

4. Watch for symptoms: A rash, headache, flu-like symptoms and joint pain can all be signs of Lyme disease, anaplasmosis and ehrlichiosis. A stiff neck and swollen lymph nodes are associated with Lyme disease.

IF YOU HAVE SYMPTOMS: Many people with Lyme disease don’t remember getting a rash or a tick bite. So mention your concerns to your health care provider. Blood tests may be able to detect Lyme disease after your body has developed antibodies.

Aries (March 21-April 19)

Expect a curveball or something unusual to happen when dealing with a friend today (probably a female). Or you might be just as surprised by the antics or decisions of a group. Possibly, you will meet a real character today. (It’s not a boring day.)

Taurus (April 20-May 20)

Today you do not want to be bossed around or dictated to by anyone because you want the freedom to be able to call your own shots. This is why you might feel rebellious when dealing with parents, bosses, teachers or the police, if they start telling you what to do. You have strong feelings of independence today!

Gemini (May 21-June 20)

This is a restless day for you. You might be unsettled or concerned because of travel plans or glitches to your plans related to travel. Likewise, issues related to publishing, the media, medicine and the law also might be confounding or full of delays and contradictions. Slow down and work out these details.

Cancer (June 21-July 22)

Be smart and double check financial matters, especially related to banking, inheritances and shared property because something unexpected will impact these areas for you today. Stay on top of things because possibly, you snooze – you lose. (You don’t want that.)

Leo (July 23-Aug. 22)

A close friend, partner or spouse will probably surprise you today. They might say or do something you didn’t expect. They might have demands. Perhaps more freedom in the relationship? Possibly, they will introduce you to someone new and unusual.

Virgo (Aug. 23-Sept. 22)

Your work routine will be interrupted today by computer glitches, power outages, staff shortages, late deliveries and other unexpected events. Give yourself extra time so that you have wiggle room to deal with surprises that come your way. Remember the Boy Scout motto: Be prepared.

Libra (Sept. 23-Oct. 22)

Scorpio (Oct. 23-Nov. 21)

Broken appliances or other interruptions, including someone knocking at your door, are just some reasons your home routine will be interrupted today. Get dressed so that you can deal with what you least expect. Possibly, stock the fridge in case you want to have food and drink on hand. (A spontaneous get together?)

Sagittarius (Nov. 22-Dec. 21)

Pay attention to everything you say and do because this is an accident-prone day for your sign. However, because you can think out-of-the-box, you might have brilliant ideas! (Or they might be far-fetched and unrealistic.) Expect detours to your day.

Capricorn (Dec. 22-Jan. 19)

Keep an eye on your money today because unexpected influences could impact your wealth. Protect what you own against loss, theft or damage. This includes cash. Make friends with your bank account so that you know what’s happening.

Aquarius (Jan. 20-Feb. 18)

Today the Moon is in your sign at odds with your ruler Uranus, which can make you jump to conclusions or make a hasty decision. You have a strong craving for excitement today and might act without thinking. Easy does it and make sure whatever you do does not lead to regret later. Be smart.

Aries (March 21-April 19)

It seems that this is going to be a great day for all kinds of official announcements. So if there’s anything you’ve been hiding from people maybe it’s a great time for you to speak up.

It’s also a great time for couples to announce engagements or even marry. The actual context favors family reunions and this means there will be some great celebrations ahead.

Taurus (April 20-May 20)

All of today’s action will take place in the home sector of your life. This means that you will either tend to all kinds of home practicalities or that you will have some unexpected visitors.

Make sure you have all your bills paid and your house clean so you will be able to lessen the stress of having any unwanted company around for the day.

Gemini (May 21-June 20)

Money comes and money goes for you the following days and you should take all the possible measures to make it stay.

This means that you should avoid spending it on things you don’t really need and on activities that are only temporary. Maybe it’s time to priorities your purchases and make sure you put some money aside for difficult days.

Cancer (June 21-July 22)

This day favors negotiations, mediations and contract signings so don’t worry if you have something like this planned for the day because things will go in the direction they are supposed to go.

All troubles you might meet along the way will only be to help you open your eyes and make better decisions later. Try to see the half full side of the glass.

Leo (July 23-Aug. 22)

Your energy and skill are being worked to max this Thursday but this doesn’t mean you will be feeling any effort. You are restless and enthusiastic over how efficient you are working.

The rewards for your actions might come in a bit late but this doesn’t mean this day won’t help you win the respect of your colleagues and collaborators.

Virgo (Aug. 23-Sept. 22)

Today is going to make some great connections for you. This means that you will meet exactly the people you need to have in your life right now.

Don’t be afraid to talk to medical professionals or law executives if these are the places where you are currently in trouble. You might also catch some clues regarding other issues you should tend to.

Libra (Sept. 23-Oct. 22)

This day is going to start in a bit of a rut for you having to tend to all kinds of mundane activities. But this doesn’t mean it has to continue in the same way.

For the single natives it announces quite an adventurous night out if they know how to seize a romantic opportunity while for those already in a relationship it seems it is also going to be a fun night.

Scorpio (Oct. 23-Nov. 21)

You are going to be right on the wave today and nothing will stop you. It seems that being enthusiastic about your activities, no matter how mundane they are, makes you very attractive and charming.

You will benefit from great interactions today, especially with persons of the opposite sex so this means you might also have a busy night.

Sagittarius (Nov. 22-Dec. 21)

You are going to be all bold and adventurous today at heart but it seems that the day itself won’t offer you many occasions to unravel yourself.

You will have to bottle up that enthusiasm for later and wait for better times. There might be an occasion for you to participate in some sort of gathering and it might not be the happiest of events going on.

Capricorn (Dec. 22-Jan. 19)

Today it seems that some new information will unravel regarding your love life. This means that a certain relationship or fling will turn out to be a lot more important for you and will prompt you to make some changes in your life.

You will also be very passionate and romantic if given the right atmosphere when the sun goes down.

Aquarius (Jan. 20-Feb. 18)

Today your worst enemy will be your body. Maybe your health has been suffering for some time now or maybe you are suddenly not feeling well.

For most natives, there aren’t going to be any serious reasons to worry about but everyone should take cautionary actions and avoid any excesses. Be responsible and careful with your body and it will react accordingly.

Pisces (Feb. 19-March 20)

This day will prompt you with every event to get to work and be as efficient as you can. There are going to be high demands for you that you will have to meet in small periods of time.

The good news is that you won’t be all stressed about this working under deadline thing and that once you are off work you will be all able to relax and have fun going out.

Good Day WOTC Family and Friends with A Thought for Today

My mantra for the rest of this week!

My life has gone into the express lane and will be here through the weekend. Big Dawg started a new job that he needs me to go with him to teach him the jobs cellphone app. He’s a little bit technically challenged when it comes to smart phones as he just switched from using a flip phone until last fall. Besides riding along with him as he delivers important papers to people all over the county, we live in I also have to print out the paperwork for him as I will not let him near my desktop computer that I use for WOTC, and all things affiliated with it. He’s already crashed it once on me, but I was able to retrieve everything I needed too and get rid of the nasty virus he had inadvertently let in. So, if some of the tomorrow posts show up later than normal it is because I didn’t get up early enough, like today I am 1 1/2 hours behind schedule, to finish them all before, we leave for the day. I will try my absolute best to still get all the regular daily posts up with no pictures. The exceptions will be the rotating daily post, a thought and laugh for todays; those are history until this coming Monday. One last thing I will only be checking WOTC’s School of Witchcraft email until this coming Monday.

The Scientific Reasons Why You’re a Mosquito Magnet: Blood Type, Odor and More

Disclaimer: The information contained in this article is for educational and informational purposes only and is not intended as health or medical advice. Always consult a physician or other qualified health provider regarding any questions you may have about a medical condition or health objectives.

Mosquito season is officially here. Learn about how to prevent and treat bites.

Summer is by far my favorite season. The warm temperatures and consistent sunshine in North Carolina, where I live, mean I can spend more time outside doing things I love: hiking, walking my dog and spending time at the lake. But that time in nature is quickly spoiled when I find myself covered in red, itchy bumps after just a few minutes outdoors. Even though we’re just on the cusp of the summer season and the temperatures are still fairly temperate for most of the US, pesky mosquitoes are active starting in March. That means mosquito season is already in full swing.

If you’re like me, you get frustrated by the number of mosquito bites you acquire. It’s downright infuriating when I come inside sporting several new welts while my friends report that they don’t have a single one.

Why is that? It’s not that I’m particularly unlucky. There are actually scientific reasons why mosquitoes single out certain people. Here’s why mosquitoes bite and how you can make yourself less of a target this summer. For more, learn about how to safely remove a tick and how you can alter the colors of your hydrangeas

Why do mosquitoes bite?

Contrary to what you might think, mosquitoes don’t bite people for food; they feed on plant nectar. Only female mosquitoes bite, and they do so to receive proteins from your blood needed to develop their eggs.

Why are some people more prone to bites?

There are several factors that impact why some people are more prone to mosquito bites than others:

Blood type

A common belief is that mosquitoes are attracted to certain blood types, considering mosquitoes bite humans for their blood. Blood type is determined by genetics, and each blood type is created based on the different sets of specific proteins, called antigens, on the surface of red blood cells. There are four main blood types: A, B, AB and O.

While there are no firm conclusions as to which blood type is more attractive to mosquitoes, several studies have suggested people with type O are most appetizing to mosquitoes. A 2019 study observed mosquito feeding behavior when presented with different blood type samples, and found mosquitoes fed from the type O feeder more than any other. A 2004 study also found that mosquitoes land on blood group O secretors (83.3%) significantly more than group A secretors (46.5%).

However, these studies are not definitive, and much is still up in the air about mosquito preferences when it comes to blood type.

Clothing color

Mosquitoes are highly visual hunters when it comes to finding a human to bite. This means movement and dark clothing colors like black, navy and red can stand out to a mosquito. Research has shown that mosquitoes are more attracted to the color black, but there has been little additional research into why this is the case.

Carbon dioxide

Mosquitoes use sight and smell to find hosts to bite. One of the quickest ways mosquitoes can sniff out a person is through the carbon dioxide emitted when we breathe. According to research published in the journal Chemical Senses, mosquitoes use an organ called a maxillary palp for carbon dioxide detection and can sense it from 164 feet away.

Because carbon dioxide is a huge attractor, people who emit more of it — larger individuals and people who are breathing heavily when working out — are more attractive to a mosquito.

Body odor and sweat

Mosquitoes are attracted to more substances and compounds than just carbon dioxide. Mosquitoes can find people to bite by smelling substances present on human skin and in sweat, including lactic acid, uric acid and ammonia.

A new study found that mosquitoes are attracted to compounds called carboxylic acids that every human produces through sebum, a waxy coating, on their skin. The sebum is eaten by the millions of beneficial microorganisms found on human skin, which produces more carboxylic acid — and will, in turn, produce an odor similar to cheese or smelly feet that appears to attract mosquitoes. Lead researchers on this study said mosquitoes are sensitive to human odor and that even perfumes or colognes can’t mask it.

Researchers are still learning why certain body odors are more attractive to mosquitoes, but they do know that genetics, bacteria on the skin and exercise all play a factor. Genetics impact the amount of uric acid emitted, while exercise increases lactic acid buildup.

Why do some people swell from mosquito bites more than others?

Mosquito bites can range in size from small little spots to large welts. Why is this the case?

Bites affect people differently. The size and severity of a bite relate to how your immune system responds to the saliva introduced by the mosquito when it bites. When mosquitoes bite, they inject some saliva when drawing blood. This saliva contains certain anticoagulants and proteins, triggering the immune system to respond to these foreign substances.

Our body responds by releasing histamine — a chemical released by white blood cells when your immune system is fighting allergens — which causes the itchiness and inflammation of the bite.

How to prevent mosquito bites

The best way to handle a mosquito bite is to not get them in the first place — but oftentimes, that’s easier said than done.

Some common ways to prevent mosquito bites include:

  • Use repellents and bug sprays (Repel, Off Deep Woods and other brands that contain DEET)
  • Use natural repellants (citronella essential oil, neem oil, thyme essential oil)
  • Avoid going outside at dawn or dusk
  • Avoid dark-colored clothing, specifically black
  • Avoid standing water and try to eliminate standing water near your home
  • Use mosquito netting when camping or sleeping outdoors
  • Wear long sleeves and pants
  • Prevent mosquito bites when traveling internationally

If you’re using DEET insect repellent, make sure to follow the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention’s guidelines (PDF) about the strength and proper application.

How to treat mosquito bites

Mosquito bites, while annoying, are often not severe and will resolve in a few days. In the meantime, there are several treatments to alleviate the itchiness and inflammation:

  • Clean with rubbing alcohol if a fresh bite
  • Take an oatmeal bath
  • Use over-the-counter antihistamines such as Benadryl or Claritin
  • Apply mild corticosteroid creams
  • Use aloe vera to reduce inflammation
  • Try a cold compress or ice pack for 10 minutes

Though difficult, try as best you can to not itch the bite too roughly to prevent any sort of skin reaction or infection.

Mosquito-borne diseases and illnesses

While the majority of mosquito bites result in welts that heal in a few days, mosquitoes are known carriers of many deadly diseases and illnesses, including but not limited to:

Mosquitoes are often considered one of the deadliest animals on earth. Mosquito-borne diseases kill more than 725,000 people a year the World Health Organization estimates, with malaria accounting for the vast majority of deaths (600,000).

While malaria and other mosquito-borne diseases hit Sub-Saharan Africa the hardest, mosquitoes pose a risk to every continent and nation. Most types of mosquitoes in the US are nuisance mosquitoes — mosquitoes that do not spread germs that make people sick — but there have been outbreaks of West Nile, dengue, chikungunya and Zika in a few states and territories.

There are several steps you can take to control mosquito populations and minimize risk. Make sure to properly cover and store water containers around your home and drain any standing water to prevent mosquitoes from laying eggs. For treatments, you can use an outdoor adulticide to kill adult mosquitoes or larvicides to treat bodies of standing water that will not be used for drinking and cannot be drained.

Infected bites will often look extremely red, swollen and warm or have a red streak that spreads outward from the bite. See a health care provider if you have signs of infection or if symptoms worsen.

Why did the witch’s team lose the cricket game? Their bats flew away.

Why did the witch put her broomstick inside the washing machine? She wanted a clean sweep.
