Who are the Harvest Gods and Goddesses? Archetypal meanings of Harvest deities.

Source: .triplemoonpsychotherapy.com

The practice of expressing gratitude for the harvest season and preparing for the onset of winter is a widespread and ancient tradition observed by cultures across the globe.

Festivals are held to celebrate the abundance of crops, offer thanks to Mother Earth, and bid farewell to Summer. Historically, mythologies worldwide have honored and revered various deities associated with the harvest and the Autumn Equinox. Although not a comprehensive account, this article briefly acknowledges some of the most prominent harvest and equinox deities from various cultures, listed alphabetically.

Autumnus, the Roman goddess of the Harvest

Autumnus, the fall season’s deity, embodies nature’s overflowing abundance during harvest. In addition, Autumnus is gender fluid, appearing in both male and female forms, which speaks to the inclusive and diverse nature of this season’s divine patron.

Banbha, the Celtic goddess and Earth Mother

Amidst the fall equinox celebrations, the Irish deity Banbha reigns supreme. As an Earth Mother, she presides over the culmination of the bountiful harvest. Banbha, much like the revered Greek goddess Gaia, is the protector and nurturer of all living beings and the land that sustains them.

Ceres, the Roman goddess of the Harvest, grain, and fertility

Ceres, the goddess of the harvest, was revered for her abundant generosity and for imparting essential knowledge to humanity.

In Greek mythology, she was known as Demeter. She was hailed as the deity who taught people the art of cultivating, preserving, and preparing grains and maize. Her divine powers were closely linked to the land’s fertility, and she was regarded as one of the most prominent guardians of the harvest.

Ceres’ influence and guidance ensured the earth’s bounty was always plentiful. Her legacy lives on as a symbol of abundance and fertility.

Çhicomecoatl, the Aztec goddess of abundance and corn

Çhicomecoatl, the goddess of fire and fertility, embodies vitalitycommunity, and plenty. She is revered in Mexico, particularly during the harvest season, as the guardian of corn and all fertile things. Her emblems are hot spices, maize, and fire, representing her power and providence over the land.

Corn Mother, the goddess of the Harvest of the Indigenous Peoples of North America

With her bountiful presence, the Corn Mother embodies the qualities of abundancevitality, and strength. Her powers of fertility and harvest are celebrated as she blesses the land with the promise of plentiful crops.

In addition to her agricultural emblems of corn and corn sheaves, she also holds the healing attributes of the earth, nurturing all who seek her aid.

Demeter, the Greek goddess of the Harvest and Agriculture

At the center of one of the most famous myths about the seasons and the Harvest lies Demeter, the goddess of grain and fertility and mother of Persephone.

When Hades, the god of the Underworld, abducted Persephone, Demeter’s anguish for her daughter resulted in a severe drought that threatened all life on Earth. With the crops perishing and humankind facing doom, Demeter embarked on a quest to rescue her daughter.

However, despite eventually reuniting with Persephone, now the goddess of the Underworld, fate demanded a sacrifice. Having consumed six pomegranate seeds, Persephone was bound to spend six months of the year in the Underworld, which begins with the Autumn Equinox when Persephone descends again into the depths.

The third Lunar month is ruled by the Ash Tree. A large, relentless species that roots penetrate deep into the Earth. It’s strongly associated with the vertical link between otherworldly realms such as the underworld, middle earth, and the spiritual world. This gives it the status of the ‘World Tree’.

This tree that is linked to otherworldly realms is also medicinal, especially when it comes to treating childhood ailments. In Celtic Lore the tree is given the name of “Cradle of Life” and from it, remedies could be created that would cure children of their illnesses.

Part of the ash is used in protective rituals due to the energies believed to be held within the tree. Its leaves are thought to bring love and affluence.

Ash Tree Zodiac

Ash signs are empathetic, compassionate and very creative. They are in tune with nature and others around them and often look upon the world with an artistic perspective. They do well in careers of creativity. They constantly strive for self-growth and renewal they think freely without much care for what others may think of them. They are viewed as introverts but are often just immersed in their own world and people are intrigued with their enchanting personality.

Ash signs pair well with Willow and Reed signs.

In the Norse eddas, Yggdrasil, the world tree, was an Ash. The spear of Odin was made from the branch of this tree, which is also known by the Celtic name Nion, pronounced knee-un. This is one of three trees sacred to the Druids (Ash, Oak and Thorn), and this is a good month to do magic that focuses on the inner self. Associated with ocean rituals, magical potency, prophetic dreams and spiritual journeys, the Ash can be used for making magical (and mundane) tools — these are said to be more productive than tools made from other wood. If you place Ash berries in a cradle, it protects the child from being taken away as a changeling by mischievous Fae.

Moon Alert

There are no restrictions to shopping or important decisions today. The Moon is in Cancer.

Aries (March 21-April 19)

You might have ambitious plans for something related to home and family today. Perhaps these ideas are related to something that you want to do with your garden or an outdoor space? A spontaneous family gathering might also take place today. Stock the fridge so that you’re not caught unawares.

Taurus (April 20-May 20)

This is a positive way to begin your week! You feel optimistic and mentally alert. However, do be aware that this is a mildly accident-prone day for you so pay attention to everything you say and do. Meanwhile, expect to encounter new people, new places and new ideas!

Gemini (May 21-June 20)

Keep an eye on your money and your belongings today. On the upside, you have excellent moneymaking ideas that are ambitious. You might see ways to boost your income. Nevertheless, something unpredictable might also impact your assets. Protect what you own against loss, theft or damage.

Cancer (June 21-July 22)

Today the Moon is in your sign dancing with both lucky moneybags Jupiter and unpredictable Uranus. This means you feel optimistic and encouraged about something. You might deal with a group of people. However, you’re also impulsive and restless. Guard against knee-jerk reactions.

Leo (July 23-Aug. 22)

An unexpected opportunity to act on your desire to travel might happen today. “I’m going places!” Similarly, you might see opportunities related to publishing, the law, medicine or higher education. Work behind the scenes to improve your chances at something because today is full of unexpected opportunities.

Virgo (Aug. 23-Sept. 22)

A friend or a group might surprise you today. Or you might meet someone today who is unusual in some way. Meanwhile, unexpected travel opportunities might come your way along with chances for higher education or news related to medicine or the law.

Libra (Sept. 23-Oct. 22)

You’re high viz. today, which means people notice you more than usual. Quite likely, they will see you as affluent and successful. They might also see you as unusual or unconventional, for some reason. Surprising news with a boss or parent might occur. Be ready for anything.

Scorpio (Oct. 23-Nov. 21)

You need a change of scenery today, which is why you might feel a bit restless. Do something different so you can expand your world. Be aware that a surprise or something unexpected might occur; therefore, pay attention to avoid accidents. Grab any chance to travel or meet new people.

Sagittarius (Nov. 22-Dec. 21)

Check your financial situation today because something unexpected could impact your banking scene or something to do with shared property, inheritances or insurance matters. In other words, if you snooze, you might lose. Stay on top of the game so you know what’s happening.

Capricorn (Dec. 22-Jan. 19)

A friend, partner or spouse might throw you a curveball today. They might ask for something you didn’t expect or make a weird suggestion. Possibly, you will meet someone new who is avant-garde, bohemian or unusual in some way? (It might be in a social situation.)

Aquarius (Jan. 20-Feb. 18)

Work-related travel might suddenly surprise you today. Or something to do with a group might also catch you off guard. Allow extra time for unexpected delays, especially related to equipment breakdowns, staff shortages and computer glitches. (“Not again!”) Parents should keep an eye on their kids today to avoid accidents.

Pisces (Feb. 19-March 20)

Stay light on your feet today because surprise invitations might suddenly appear. Therefore, dress well because you might suddenly have a luncheon date or an opportunity to socialize or attend the arts, the theatre, a movie, sports events – something that will please you. Dress so that you’re ready for anything.

If Your Birthday Is Today

Your strength is both physical and spiritual, and part of your resilience is due to your optimistic attitude. You move at such a fast pace that others may have trouble keeping up, and details are not your strong suit. But because you charge ahead with such a happy-go-lucky demeanor, you’ll surely go far even if your routine and company change daily. Take some time along the way to ask others how they are doing, too, and you’ll go even further.

IF YOUR BIRTHDAY IS March 18, then your zodiac sign is Pisces. You, Pisces, are unafraid to take risks in order to rise above your current situation.

If today March 18th is your birthday, you can be misunderstood. Some behavior patterns may suddenly change therefore giving people the impression that you are foolish or even out of control.

These urges come from your awareness of your psychic abilities. It is as if something is pulling you in one direction and people just do not get it.

Pisceans with zodiac birthday March 18have a great need to be stimulated and look for spontaneity in the bedroom, laundry room, or kitchen. Your sex drive is definitely strong and it tends to dominate the nature of the relationship. This can sometimes interfere with your romantic relationships.

Your birthday personality trait shows that you love competition. More likely than not, you are rewarding yourself for a job well done. You feel you are superior because of spiritual connection and ability to see the bigger picture.

People turn to you for advice, and then they tell their friends about what you said. You would do well in politics, Pisces.

You who are born on this day 18th Marchfocus on bringing techniques that are more modern to the game plan. With hard work and devotion, you usually bring home the bacon and the cheese.

However, Pisces, you do too much trying to ensure financial stability. Sometimes, it is best to take things slow and easy rather than just jump right into a situation. This is an important aspect of your life and needs to be done with practicality and direction.

With a realistic outlook on the future, your significant other will appreciate your efforts and steady progress to build a brighter tomorrow. You know how to put your life in order through investments and a safe retirement account.

Your love match is certainly a lucky person predicts the March 18 birthday astrology analysis. A Piscean will need someone who can benefit from shared experiences. The perfect partner is someone who makes you feel safe and gives you motivation to push ahead.

You of all people, Pisces, understand what it means to be an adult that has to come to terms with the past. In order to know the value of being a parent, you need to let go of old influences that perhaps did not shed a very good light on parenthood. You believe “it takes a village to raise one child.”

When you have the ability to educate the little minds into a more positive and diverse way of thinking, you will have an independent thinking adult.

If today March 18 is your birthday, you release a lot of energy through sexual marathons but in addition, work out as a part of a routine. You tend to watch your weight but normally can eat what you want.

As your birthday meaning says, you are competitive and Pisces zodiac sign can be found at the basketball court or racquetball court. It is whatever… as long as you are active, you are in good shape. Go ahead and give yourself a high five!

The March 18 birthday horoscope shows that you get excited when it comes to new and undiscovered grounds. You have a strong work moral code with a determination, unlike any other Piscean.

You are going to be successful. It is your destiny. I think it is admirable how you are willing to take a cut in pay to do what you love to do. Besides, we know it not necessarily how much you make, but what you do with it that counts. You, Pisces, can stretch a dollar bill until it breaks!

I can say this about you, Pisces. The March 18 birthday characteristics show you are unafraid to meet any challenge head-on. You are in great physical shape as you love to exercise in and out of the bedroom.

Pisceans believe in extended family values when it comes to childcare. It is everybody’s responsibility and not just one person. Sometimes, people just do not understand you, Pisces.

All Signs

On Tuesday, the Vernal Equinox occurs, which marks the beginning of spring. Yay! The two big changes that take place this week are the Sun entering Aries to stay for four weeks; and Mars entering Pisces to stay for the five weeks. These two changes will highlight different areas of our lives because both the Sun and fiery Mars generate energy! Read on below to see how these changes will affect your sign. Meanwhile — “Spring is sprung! The grass is riz. I wonder where da boidies is? Dey say da boids are on da wing. But that’s absoid. Da wings are on da boid!” (My dad told me this verse when I was shorter and weighed less.)

Aries (March 21-April 19)

On Tuesday, the Sun enters your sign, where it will stay for the next four weeks. This happens only once a year; and when it occurs, it boosts your confidence and increases your energy. This is why you will be more powerful and effective at getting out there and doing what you want. “Hello world, I’m back!” The Sun will also attract people and favourable situations to you. Meanwhile, Mercury is also in your sign, which makes you eager to express your views and discuss your ideas with others. However, be careful because hidden enemies might gain some traction in the next month. Be smart. Keep your eyes open, and if you suspect something fishy is going on – it is!

Taurus (April 20-May 20)

This shift of the Sun for four weeks and Mars for five weeks is affecting everyone. For your sign, it will create conflicting influences. On one hand, you’ll want to be low profile. You’ll be happy to stay at home and work alone or behind the scenes. In fact, research and digging for answers will go well. On the other hand (you have different rings); actually, in contradiction to your preference for privacy, fiery Mars will boost your desire to be involved with friends, especially groups and organizations. You’ll be competitive, physically active and ready to take charge! One thing is certain: You will more easily achieve your goals by working with others, which means look for win-win solutions. Focus on long-term aspirations.

Gemini (May 21-June 20)

Time for your curtain call! For the next six weeks, you’re ambitious! You will work hard at any project that you identify with. However, you will want independence and authority, which means you should be your own boss. (If not, conflict with coworkers is likely. Worse yet, supervisors and bosses might feel threatened by you.) Meanwhile, the Sun will make you more popular with others, which means the next four weeks are a marvellous time to socialize! Strive to integrate your energy with the people around you because this will make you happy, and also help you achieve your goals. Enjoy schmoozing with pals!

Cancer (June 21-July 22)

Once a year, the Sun travels across the top of your chart for four weeks and that time has arrived. This is good news because this symbolizes that you are in a flattering spotlight! This is why bosses, parents and authority figures will admire you even if you don’t do anything special. This is also why people will approach you to take on increased responsibilities. (You look so capable!) Since you have this magical advantage, it’s in your best interests to use it. (Ya think?) Demand the advantage. Push your agenda. Make travel plans and explore opportunities in publishing, higher education, medicine and the law because you’re golden!

Leo (July 23-Aug. 22)

The next four weeks will be pleasant for you because the Sun is in your fellow Fire sign. (This happens twice a year, four months before and four months after your birthday.) This creates a lovely boost to your energy, which in turn, will help you pursue your goals. Life will hum along easily; and you’ll enjoy meeting people from other countries or different cultures. Grab every chance to travel because you want a change of scenery. Explore opportunities in publishing, higher education, the law and medicine. Your sex drive will be amped. Disputes about shared property and finances might occur. (Well, nothing’s perfect – but it is a lovely week!)

Virgo (Aug. 23-Sept. 22)

This week both the Sun and Mars change signs, which will affect you. For starters, the next four weeks will be more passionate and more intense! You might attract someone who is powerful and intense to you, and this person might stir things up or promote some psychological self-inquiry within you. You’ll also be concerned with shared property, taxes, debt and inheritances. Meanwhile, Mars is opposite your sign for the next five weeks, which happens only once every two years. This could trigger tension with partners and close friends. People will be more assertive and you might reply in kind. Make sure something is worth fighting for. Avoid needless controversy. Stay chill.

Libra (Sept. 23-Oct. 22)

You will need more sleep in the next four weeks because the Sun, which represents energy, will be opposite your sign, which means it is now as far away from you as it can get all year (in your chart). This happens only once a year; and this is why you will need naps or an earlier bedtime. However, countering this will be the fact that Mars will spur you to work hard! (Go figure.) Mars will make you eager to get things done, especially because you will take pride in what you do. Note: Your desire to work and accomplish a lot is more singular, which means you’re not too keen to be a team player. You will delegate to others more than usual. Nevertheless, you’ll be happy and enthusiastic about what you’re doing.

Scorpio (Oct. 23-Nov. 21)

For the next four weeks, you’re in work mode! You will want to get as much done as possible, which is why you want to be efficient, effective and productive. Admittedly, you might have to work to benefit someone else, as well as yourself. (“It’s a joy to labour for those you love.”) It’s interesting that one of the 12 rules that Jordan Peterson espouses is “Treat yourself like you are someone you are responsible for helping.” It’s so true that we often take better care of someone else than we do our own self! How crazy is that? But it’s true. (I have observed this with myself. Although I like my creature comforts, I often ignore self-care.) Respect your health in the next four weeks because you’ll be in “work hard/party hard” mode.

Sagittarius (Nov. 22-Dec. 21)

Lucky you! The next four weeks promise to be a wonderful, playful window of time for you. Social outings, an appreciation of the arts, involvement in sports events and playful activities with kids are some reasons you’ll feel more enthusiastic about life. By all means, accept invitations to socialize with others. Slip away on a vacation if you can. Grab every opportunity to express your creative talents through writing, drawing, singing, performing or doing whatever pleases you. Meanwhile, renovations, redecorating projects and efforts to make home improvements will occur where you live because increased activity will create chaos for the next month!

Capricorn (Dec. 22-Jan. 19)

When the Sun change signs on Tuesday, your focus will shift to home and family for the next four weeks. You might be more involved with a parent. Others will be busy with home repairs and DIY projects. Nevertheless, you will also welcome a chance to relax at home among familiar surroundings and buffer yourself from the busy world. Memories of past events will come up. (“Remember when your dad took you golfing, then drove home alone because he forgot you were there?”) However, Mars will counter this desire to relax at home by accelerating your daily pace. It will make you identify with your beliefs. This is why you will vigourously defend your ideas! I rest my handbag.

Aquarius (Jan. 20-Feb. 18)

In the next four weeks, you’ll start to be more involved with your immediate surroundings. Interactions with siblings, relatives and neighbours will increase. The pace of your days will pick up with a busy schedule of errands, appointments and conversations. Do travel if you can because you’re eager for a change. In particular, the next four weeks are an excellent time to share your ideas with others. Define your boundaries. State your position and make it clear. This is also the perfect time to take a course because you’ll love to read, write, learn and teach. Meanwhile, not only will you work harder for your money, many of you will spend more on purchases. Ka-ching!

Pisces (Feb. 19-March 20)

Both the Sun and Mars will change signs this week. Mars will enter your sign on Friday to stay for five weeks. (This happens only once every two years.) This will really boost your physical energy and enthusiasm for life! You will work hard to further your own interests. You’ll be more of a fighter for your own rights; in fact, you’ll defend the rights of others as well. It’s a positive time! Meanwhile, the Sun will cause you to ponder your values and think about what is really worthwhile in life. It will also prompt you to think of your possessions and what is useful to you versus what is just deadweight that you should cast off. “Be gone!”

Ostara: The Promise

Ostara, the vernal equinox, is celebration of rebirth and renewal. It’s the promise of eternal life. The green world holds the promise of rebirth.  The grass greens sand a veil of green mists the trees. Daffodil foliage pierces the soil, greeting the spring Sun. In the early evening the small Hylas or “peppers” can be heard singing the spring song from the swamp margins. It’s a song as ancient as time itself. It’s the voice of renewal and enduring life.

To observe Ostara’s promise of life’s eternal cycle, you’ll need two hard-boiled eggs. Place them on your altar. Hold one egg. Think of how it holds the promise of new life. Peel the egg and discard the shell. Slowly, with purpose, eat the egg. The white represents the future. The yolk represents the life-giving Sun. Last, decorate the second egg with life affirming design of your choice. Flowers, a cross, and a pentacle are a few ideas. Keep the egg for a while, then discard it.

Let Ostara’s promise of new life spark your energy and creativity.

Mabon: The Bounty

The sabbat of Mabon observes the autumn equinox. It’s a time of Thanksgiving for the bounty of the earth and a time to observe nature’s decline into the dark season.

Mabon means “Great Son.” As the legend goes, Mabon the son of the Goddess, was abducted as a child and taken to the land of Avalon. He was freed and returned as a young man. The legend is used to explain nature’s decline in autumn and its return at Ostara. Even though we are entering the dark season, we are surrounded by bounty. Country markets overflow with pumpkins, apples, and autumn flowers.

To celebrate this time of bounty, decorate your altar with seasonal decor–pumpkins, mums, and leaves are ideas. Then in your Book of Shadows write down the bounty you are grateful for–family, home, career, etc. Leave your book open for a few days. Then review your list. Send loving thoughts to the people and things on your list. Put your book away.

The chill comes and the fingers of the dark earlier across the land, but we are surrounded by the bounty of Mabon.

Date night! As tonight is Valentine’s Day for those who celebrate or care, which I don’t because every day is the Thunderdome of love up in this house, Venus is here to help bring everyone closer…rawr. But not just romantically, friendship is for Friday too. Anything to draw more love to you is for Friday, whether it’s self-love, sexual love or even mending a rift. Fridays are my best bath days too. Not just for purification, but have you ever done a glamour? Mirror mirror on the wall. I have a friend who found out I was a witch and in the conversation, I told her about a glamour because she had a date. She looked right at me and said “You bitch. I knew there were nights you just looked too good. That’s not fair” We used to go out back when we were both single. The feminine power of Venus is also good for crafting, harvesting herbs, making potions, and just flat getting your drink on. Now we all know why I go live on Fridays. Secret is out. If I am creating a tea or anything for healing, I like to craft on a Friday. And hey, I know you don’t smoke weed, I know this; but I’m gonna get you high today, ’cause it’s Friday; you ain’t got no job… and you ain’t got shit to do. I smell Netflix and chill…. (movie reference #2).

Spell For Thursday – How to Cleanse an Object for Magical or Ritual Use

How to Cleanse an Object for Magical or Ritual Use

Simply put, cleansing an object entails cleaning it. The distinction is that you’re not just cleaning it physically. What you’re aiming to do is cleanse it energetically.

The act of cleansing is the removal of all past energy from an item. Even with brand-new ritual items, unwanted energy can emanate from a variety of sources. Almost any product involves the energy of multiple people who handle it along the way, from its construction to its final sale.

If you buy something used, it already has a lot of energy from the person who owned it before you.

Why Cleanse an object before Ritual use?

Objects do store energy. And you don’t want to use a magical tool that has negative energies or energies you don’t know about because it will affect your work.

Because of this, you should cleanse all of your magical and ritual items. This includes your athame, robe, and any other tools you plan to use in rituals or keep on your altar.

Even the candles you use and the item you use to engrave sigils onto your candles should be cleansed.

How to Cleanse an Object

There are various ways to cleanse a magical object, depending on what you have on hand and the material of the item itself.

Cleansing is a rather easy process. Start by cleaning the objects normally and taking care of them as you normally would. For example, any stones should be cleaned with water and proper cleaners. Cast iron may be cleaned using salt and oil or any other way you want. Candles and other tools can be dusted off and cleaned. Cleaning and sanitizing drinking and eating vessels is essential. Then continue to clean it energetically.

Common Methods to Cleanse an Object

  • Smudging is an old ritual used by shamanic peoples all over the world. To cleanse an object, simply pass it through the smoke. It’s best to use a purifying scent like sage, sandalwood, lavender, or rosemary, but use what seems best for you.
  • You can also use your breath to cleanse and purify your tool by grounding and centering yourself first and then focusing your breath on the object.
  • Use the weather.  You may leave your tools outside, ideally on a windy day, and let the breeze take care of the work for you.
  • You can pass things over a candle flame, but be careful and make sure the object won’t get damaged. You’ll need some visualization abilities for this one since you’ll need to imagine the flame growing and surrounding the object to purify it.
  • Another natural cleanser is sunlight. Put your ritual items in bright sunlight for at least an hour to burn off any bad energy. This will leave them clean and ready to be charged with your energy for the best results.
  • Moonlight works similarly and is preferred for any objects that may be faded or otherwise affected by the sun’s light and heat. This is especially important when it comes to some gems and plants that you might want to use in spells.
  • You can wash the object in running water, like from a faucet or a stream, and say a simple prayer over it while imagining all the bad energy leaving the object and white light filling it. You may alternatively submerge the object in water that has been added a pinch of salt or a few drops of a purifying essential oil. If the object is very fragile, simply sprinkle it with a few drops of salt water.
  • If the object is resilient, you can bury it for at least a day in dirt or salt. Any negative energy will be absorbed by the soil or salt. Sea salt has been used for a long time to clean up dense energies, especially in crystals and candles. Simply bury the object for at least a day in a basin of salt, then remove and rinse – make sure to get rid of the salt. You can change this method by mixing sea salt with water and soaking or sprinkling your objects. But, depending on what they are made of, not everything lasts well in a salt bath, so you should do some research first.
  • Visualization is the simplest method. Take the object in your hands, and visualize a clean, pure white light coming through your hands and into the object. This will flush out any bad energy and fill the object with pure, clean energy.
  • Sound is another effective approach to releasing and breaking up stagnant energy; try ringing a bell or some chimes over your more delicate ritual items and ingredients to cleanse them for magical usage.

Use your discretion and be realistic when it comes to cleansing. Metal should not be soaked in seawater overnight because it will rust. Similarly, you should avoid placing paper near a fire.

Witchcraft – Definition, History, Varieties, & Facts

Witchcraft, traditionally, the exercise or invocation of alleged supernatural powers to control people or events, practices typically involving sorcery or magic. Although defined differently in disparate historical and cultural contexts, witchcraft has often been seen, especially in the West, as the work of crones who meet secretly at night, indulge in cannibalism and orgiastic rites with the Devil, or Satan, and perform black magic. Witchcraft thus defined exists more in the imagination of contemporaries than in any objective reality. Yet this stereotype has a long history and has constituted for many cultures a viable explanation of evil in the world. The intensity of these beliefs is best represented by the European witch hunts of the 14th to 18th century, but witchcraft and its associated ideas are never far from the surface of popular consciousness and—sustained by folk tales—find explicit focus from time to time in popular television and films and in fiction.

Meanings

The modern English word witchcraft has three principal connotations: the practice of magic or sorcery worldwide; the beliefs associated with the Western witch hunts of the 14th to the 18th century; and varieties of the modern movement called Wicca, frequently mispronounced “wikka.”

The terms witchcraft and witch derive from Old English wiccecraeft: from wicca (masculine) or wicce (feminine), pronounced “witchah” and “witchuh,” respectively, denoting someone who practices sorcery; and from craeft meaning “craft” or “skill.” Roughly equivalent words in other European languages—such as sorcellerie (French), Hexerei (German), stregoneria (Italian), and brujería (Spanish)—have different connotations, and none precisely translates another. The difficulty is even greater with the relevant words in African, Asian, and other languages. The problem of defining witchcraft is made more difficult because the concepts underlying these words also change according to time and place, sometimes radically. Moreover, different cultures do not share a coherent pattern of witchcraft beliefs, which often blend other concepts such as magic, sorcery, religionfolklore, theology, technology, and diabolism. Some societies regard a witch as a person with inherent supernatural powers, but in the West witchcraft has been more commonly believed to be an ordinary person’s free choice to learn and practice magic with the help of the supernatural. (The terms West and Western in this article refer to European societies themselves and to post-Columbian societies influenced by European concepts.) The answer to the old question “Are there such things as witches?” therefore depends upon individual belief and upon definition, and no single definition exists. One thing is certain: the emphasis on the witch in art, literature, theatre, and film has little relation to external reality.
