Herbal Preparations

Decoctions


A decoction is herbs that have been simmered in water.
It is the best method for drawing the healing elements from tough plant parts such as bark roots, stems and heavy leaves. To make a decoction use 1 ounce of dried herbs to 1 pint of water that has been brought to a boil. Keep water just below boiling for about 30 minutes and let herbs simmer. Simmering may take up to 1 hour, depending on plant used.
A higher heat than infusions is necessary because of the toughness of the plant parts.


Decoctions should always be strained while hot, so that the matter that separates on cooling may be mixed again with the fluid by shaking when the remedy is used. Use glass, ceramic or earthenware pots, or clean, unbroken enameled cast iron. Do not use plain cast iron with astringent plants.

 


Electuary


When powders are mixed with syrup, honey, brown sugar, or glycerin to produce a more pleasant taste or to make them easier to use internally, they are called electuarys. These are rarely prepared in advance, but are done when needed. Different substances need different proportions of syrup. Light vegetable powders usually require twice their weight, gum resins 2/3 their weight, mineral substances about half their weight. If an electuary is made up in advance and it hardens, add more syrup. If it swells up and emits gas, merely beat it in a mortar.

 


Extracts


Extracts are solid substances resulting from the evaporation of the solution of vegetable principles. The extract is obtained in three ways: by expressing the juice of fresh plants, by using a solvent such as alcohol, or simmering a plant tea and reducing it to a thickened state.
The last is done by simmering a plant and by repeating the process until most of the water used has evaporated, making a decoction. This gives a distillation of the most active principles in the plant. Add 1/4 teaspoon of alcohol (brandy, gin or vodka will do), glycerin, or tincture of benzoine to preserve the extract.

 


Fomentations


A fomentation is a strong herbal tea in which a clean cloth is dipped.
The cloth can be filled with herbs. The cloth is then applied to the affected part.

 


Infusions


This is the origin of the idea of witches potion. It is a process of soaking herbs in water.

 


Hot Infusion 

 

To make an infusion boil water. Add the boiled water to 1 teaspoon dried herb. Cover and let steep for 9-13 minutes. Strain, cool. Infusions are drunk as teas, added to bath, rubbed into furniture and floors, and to anoint body. Powdered Bark, root, seeds, resin and bruised nuts, seeds, bark and buds may be used in hot infusions.

 


Cold infusion

 

Steep in cold water or cold milk for several hours. Wet, mashed herbs can be used internally as a tea or ad poultices on body.

 


Oils


Aromatic oils and rectified alcohol can be combined. The oils seep into the alcohol to produce an essence. Oils may be captured by evaporation from flower petals. Vegetable, nut, or fruit oils can be used as a medium for steeping aromatic plants to extract volatile oils. Aromatic oils can also be steeped in alcohol to extract essence.


To make an oil, pick your own fresh herbs or purchase dried herbs form a reputable source. Pack a large jar with the chosen herb and pour in any favorite mono unsaturated or polyunsaturated oil. Use enough to cover the herb. Close tightly. Label the jar and place in a sunny place for several weeks. Strain out the herb by pouring through cheesecloth into a fresh jar.


Hold the cheesecloth over the opening of the jar containing the herbs and secure with a rubber band. Invert the jar and pour the infused oil through the cheesecloth. Before discarding the herbs, squeeze all the oil out of them. Repeat the entire procedure.


Repack a clean jar with more of the same herb. Add the infused oil, plus enough additional oil to cover the herbs. Store again in sunlight. Strain again through cheesecloth. Pour the oil into a labeled jar and store until needed.

 


Syrups


Medicinal syrups are formed when sugar is incorporated with vegetable infusions, decoctions, expressed juices, fermented liquors, or simple water solutions. Sometimes tinctures are added to a simple syrup, and the alcohol is evaporated. The tincture is sometimes combined with sugar and gently heated, or exposed to the sun until the alcohol is evaporated. The syrup is then prepared with the impregnated sugar and water. Refined sugar makes a clearer and better flavored syrup. Any simple syrup can be preserved by substituting glycerin for a certain
portion of the syrup. Always make syrups in small quantities.

 


To make an herbal syrup, add 2 ounces of dried herb with 1 quart water in a large pot. Boil down and reduce to 1 pint, then add 1-2 tablespoons of honey. If you want to use fresh fruit, leaves, or roots in syrups, you should double the amount of herbs. Store in refrigerator for up to a month. Honey-based syrups are simple and effective way to preserve healing qualities of herbs. Syrups can soothe sore throats and provide some relief from coughs.

 


Teas

 

Home-made herbal teas are much more potent than the store bought teas. Their flavor can be quite strong and sometimes unpleasant.

 

To make a tea, boil 1 pint of water. Add 1 ounce of dried herb tops ( leaves flowers, stems) steep 3 -5 minutes.

 


Tinctures


Tinctures are solutions of medicinal substances in alcohol or diluted alcohol. To make a tincture, grind plant parts with mortar and pestle (or a blender). Add just enough high-quality vodka, whiskey or grain alcohol to cover herbs. Let sit for 21 days then add a small quantity of glycerin (about 2 tbs per pint) and about 10 % volume of spring water.
Strain and store in airtight amber colored glass. If kept cool and dry it will last for up to 5 years.


Dose is usually 20 drops in a cup of tea or warm water, 4 times a day.
For a stronger tincture place herbs in a cone-shaped piece of parchment paper. Pass alcohol repeatedly through the powdered or cut herb. Catch the slow drippings in a jar.


When it has passed once, you may use it, but the more you repeat the process, the stronger the tincture will be. It is acceptable to dilute any alcohol tincture with water.


Add 4 ounces of water and 1 teaspoon of glycerin for every pint of alcohol. The glycerin is optional, it is an additional preservative.

 


Non Alcoholic Tincture


Alcohol is a near perfect preservative of plant attributes.
If for some reason you wish to evaporate the alcohol, add the tincture dose to a cup of water then add 1/8 to 1/4 teaspoon of boiling water. Some herbs can be steeped in milk to make a milk tincture. Strain out the herbs, and store in a labeled jar in the refrigerator.

 


Ointments


An ointment is a soothing, healing, slightly oily or fatty substance into which the essence of a healing plant has been dissolved. This is done by heating the fat or oil with the plant until it loses its normal color and the oil or fat has absorbed the healing chemical principles. the plant is then strained out, and beeswax is added to harden the ointment.

Preservatives such as drops of tincture of benzoin, poplar bud tincture, or glycerin are optional additions. If you make ointments in small batches and keep them tightly closed with paraffin wax, they don’t decompose. The traditional folk, herbal, and pharmaceutical base for ointments is pork lard. Purify it by simmering and straining. It has healing abilities even without the addition of herbs, but so do a lot of fats and oils. It is said to have great drawing power. Purified, liquefied anhydrous lanolin is also used as a base for ointments. Lanolin is the substance washed from the wool of sheep. It comes in many levels of purity, so the results vary depending on the product. This oil is the closest to skin oil.


Almond oil, cocoa butter, wheat germ, and vitamin E are neutral bases for ointments. If no other product is available, Vaseline may be used, but is listed here in case nothing else is available. All ointments must contain one substance that will thicken the final product. Lanolin is a thickener, as is cocoa butter. Both are non sticky and mix well with most other oils.


Other useful but sticky thickeners are glycerin, honey, or liquid lecithin.
Also, various powdered resins and gum swell up and thicken when first soaked in cold water, then simmered in gently boiling water, and added to preparations. Agar-agar and Irish moss are seaweed thickeners.
Green apples provide and excellent acid fruit pectin that is a good addition to creams and ointments. While any of the above sticky and non sticky thickeners will help swell a product and keep it emulsified, you will still need some wax to harden a cold cream or ointment. Beeswax is perfect, although expensive. It may be combined with paraffin wax.

 


Poultices


A poultice is a raw or mashed herb applied directly to the body, or applied wet directly to the body, or encased in a clean cloth and then applied. Poultices are used to heal bruises, putrid sores, soothe abrasions, or withdraw toxins from an area. They may be applied hot or cold, depending on the health need. Cold poultices(and compresses) are used to withdraw the heat from an inflamed or congested area. Use a hot poultice or compress to relax spasms and for some pains.


To make a poultice, use fresh or dried herbs that have been soaked in boiling water until soft. Mix with enough slippery elm powder to make poultice stick together. Place on affected part then wrap body part and poultice with clean cloth.

 


Vinegars


Herbs that are soluble in alcohol are usually soluble in vinegar, and are useful for salad vinegars, cosmetic vinegars, some liniments and preventive sickroom “washes”.

 


Waters


Steeped herbs, water, and alcohol and steeped herbs plus honey and other fruits are often called waters. Sometimes extracts or spirits of various herbs, such as lavender, are also called waters.

For this spell, you will need a strong tree, a water bottle filled with water, and a 69-inch length of white yarn, ribbon, or string.

After the moon rises, stand under the tree, and address its trunk and branches:

Blessed tree, may our love be as strong as thee!

Call out the name of the one you love and who loves you. Now, walk clockwise around the tree three times. As you do, sprinkle drops of water from the bottle around the tree base, and say three times:

Blessed tree, may our love be as strong as thee!

Again, call out the name of your beloved. Tie the white yarn around the tree trunk. Now place your palms on the tree, and say:

Blessed tree, in summer, fall, winter, and spring
May our love be strong by earth, air, fire, and sea
May our union be sweet, romantic, and loving, blessed be!

Once more, call out the name of the one you love. Now, lean against the tree and place both palms face down against the bark. Take a few minutes to think about the person you love. Close your eyes for a couple of minutes, and imagine he or she coming to you and telling you how much you are loved and adored. Imagine your lover showing you how much you are loved. Take several deep, complete breaths to clarify the image and sensation. When you are done, untie the yarn. Retie the white yarn to your bedpost to bring the magic of the silvery moon into your bedroom and lovemaking. As you do, say:

May our love be strong by earth, air, fire, and sea
May our union be sweet, romantic, and loving, blessed be!

The Faery Queen, Chang-O, sits on a golden throne, arrayed in snowy whiteness, radiating brightness. She dazzles the eyes with her halo of light. Angels with rainbow wings hover softly over her and form a canopy above her. A host of faery beings stand before her, all robed in light. This spell uses the enchanting faery magic of the faery queens to help you create a magical lovemaking circle for romance.

To cast this spell, you will need white clothes, your lover, sensuous music, a bath, your favorite scented oil, and three candles (white, pink, and red).

Begin after dark. Put white linens on your bed, and set aside white robes, lingerie, pajamas, or something similar that is all white to wear after your bath. Take a hot bath or shower with your lover and anoint each other with your favorite scented oil. Sandalwood or vanilla oil would both be excellent selections. Put on your white clothes.

Set up your altar in your bedroom with a white candle, a pink candle, and a red candle, in a row from left to right, in that order. Draw a circle of white light, and call in the elements. Now turn on the sensuous music. Light the white candle, and dedicate it to your favorite love goddess. Light the pink candle from the white candle. Dedicate it to your lover. Light the red candle from the pink candle flame, and dedicate it to your favorite love god. Hold your lover’s hands in yours and say together:

May our love shine brightly tonight

Allow the candles to burn down safely, and let the magick of the night enchant you. Leave the circle down as you make love and sleep. In the morning, bid farewell to the elements and pull up the circle. You can also perform this spell solo by adapting the incantation.

You will often be able to find spells for most purposes but being able to write your own is particularly useful. Not only can you use ingredients that are at hand but you can also tailor the spell exactly to its purpose. This makes it that much stronger.

When it comes to spells, there is no real hard and fast rule about how they should be phrased. They can be as simple or as complex as you like. They do not have to be perfect prose and they do not have to rhyme, unless you so desire.

Start off by deciding which deity you are going to ask for help. Choose items that are sacred to that deity in order to strengthen the spell. Items such as herbs sacred to that deity, incense related to them, etc.

Then add in what it is that you want help with. It is important that you are as clear as possible about what you want help with. Be as specific as possible to avoid ambiguous results.

You should always end each spell with a phrase such as, “And harm none, so be it.” or “To the greater good, let it be done.” You want to add this in so that your spell does not hurt anyone else.

Next choose when you will perform your spell. Getting the spell cast at the right phase in the lunar cycle should be top priority. After that is sorted out, you can choose the most auspicious day.

Candles are a powerful magical tool and can be useful to help you focus. Choose candles in colors related to what you are asking for or colors sacred to the deity of your choice.

You can also see whether or not there are any magical symbols that will aid your spell – these can be carved into the candles or drawn on a piece of paper.

It may be useful to have a representation of the person that the spell is about, if applicable.

Don’t get too caught up in the makings of the spell though – sometimes the simplest ones are the best.

Allspice

Allspice is used as a paste to soothe and relieve toothache, as well as a mouthwash to freshen the
breath. The rind contains the most active medicinal components and is considered to be stimulant in
action, particularly the aroma. The tea has antiseptic properties (due to the eugenol content in the berries) and is used primarily as a digestive aid for flatulence, intestinal gas and indigestion. The tea is also used as an appetite stimulant, and as a carminative. Both the tea and a poultice are used for rheumatism and neuralgia.

Allspice lowers blood sugar (useful in diabetes) and improves protein absorption. The leaves are used in the bath for varicose veins, gout, and edema. The eugenol content is said to promote digestive enzymes in the body.

Magickal uses: Allspice encourages healing and is used in mixtures to ask for money and good fortune. Also used in determination and healing spells

Properties: Aromatic, carminative, stimulant

Growth: Allspice is harvested from a tree that is native to Central and South America as well as the Caribbean. Allspice is the dried berry of the pimento, an evergreen tree growing to 40 feet in height. It bears opposite, leathery, oblong to oblong-lancelet leaves whose pinnately arranged veins show prominently on the underside. Small white flowers grow in many-flowered cymes in the upper leaf axils from June to August. The fruit is a fleshy, sweet berry which is purplish-black when ripe.

Poultice: Boil berries and make a thick paste. Spread on a soft clean cloth. The cloth can also be dipped in warm tea and used as hot pack

Pimento water: Combine 5 parts crushed berries with 200 parts water and distill down to half the original volume. A dose is from 1-2 fluid ounces.

Oil: A dose is from 2-5 drops. For flatulence, take 2 or 3 drops on sugar

Powder: A dose is from 10-30 grains

Makes two servings.

How Magical Tools Enhance Your Results

 

Magic would not be complete without scented oils, homemade magical brews and smoke rising from the incense as it carries our thoughts up into the universe. We weave spells utilizing the simple but potent powers found within the tools nature gives us. The power of incense and oils can magically transform our lives.

Magic can be as simple as rubbing scented oil on a colored candle, setting it in a holder and lighting it as you visualize your magical need. Or it can be more complex, involving several candles, many oils, incense, ritual clothing, chants and more. The details are up to you. What’s important is that you use Magic to bring light, joy and peace into your life and the world around you.

By now you should understand that all magic comes from within. Your magical tools simply help you draw out the thoughts and feelings that you want to send out to the Universe.

To help you understand their true purpose of your tools, I am going to share an excerpt from another one of my books. It clearly describes the benefits and is worth repeating here:

Think back to a time when you dressed up for a job interview or an important social event. What you wore made you feel better about yourself, and thus improved your chances for a successful outcome. You knew that your clothes didn’t really have magical powers, but there was no question that having the right outfit and accessories boosted your self-confidence, and THAT is why these items were needed.

Magical tools work the same way. They are a part of our rituals because they can help us focus our thoughts and generate the ideal atmosphere to work in.

Incense can create a magical atmosphere that helps you achieve the desired mental state for your ritual. It can be used both on and off the altar to cleanse and create sacred space. If for any reason the smoke of incense bothers you, essential oil can work as a substitute. But be sure to include one or the other. The effects of aroma can have a significant impact on any rituals or magical work.

Stones or crystals may also be used in your spell work. Stones are very easy to carry with you and are great little reminder of the beautiful gifts our Mother Earth wants to share with you.

Herbs are another example of the many blessings our Mother Earth offers us. It’s very common to see them listed in spells, but we should be using them in our daily life as well. Whenever I consume living foods, I think about the life-energy of the food entering my body and merging with my own. Spiritual leaders from many different paths also believe that living foods (fresh fruits and vegetables) actually enhance our ability to communicate with the Divine. If this is true, then consuming Mother Earth’s living foods can help raise physical, mental and spiritual energy and should be considered an important part of all magical practice.

Finally, you might not think of jewelry as being a “tool” for magical work. However, placing a small pentacle or symbol of your beliefs on your alter or simply carrying it around with you throughout the day, is also a great little reminder of the power that is within you.

LAPIS BLUE DREAM CHARM

Use this charm to make your deepest wish come true.

Lapis lazuli means stone (Lapis) and blue (azul). The master painters of yesteryear used pulverized lapis lazuli to create a rich ultramarine blue paint. Many of the early paintings of the Mother Mary were done using this vibrant blue paint.

For this charm, you will need a piece of lapis lazuli, a clean sheet of paper, bright blue paint, and a paint brush.

After dark, hold the piece of lapis lazuli in your power hand. Merge with the divine, and say:

Lapis blue, may my deepest wish come true!

State your deepest wish. Put the sheet of paper on your altar, and paint your dearest wish with the paint and paintbrush on the paper. Keep it simple. Fold the paper in half, and in half once more. Put the folded paper on the altar, with the lapis lazuli stone on top of the paper. Keep it there until your wish comes true. Every now and again, hold the lapis and the folded paper in your power hand, and repeat:

Lapis blue, my deepest wish is coming true!

Let’s Talk Witch – Do spells really work?

Spells really work. Why? Because there is magic in everyone, each person, everyone creates their own reality. We are the creators of our universe of our world. We create magic when we wish for something or intend something to happen. We create magic by imagining what we want and holding it in our hand even if we don’t have it yet. For example, you may want to have a new car, or you may want to attract your soul mate or whatever you with to yourself. So you think about it first, and if you believe, and I mean really believe with unwavering faith then you get your wish. It is as simple as that.

Some folks will say that they tried a spell once and it did not work for them. My grandmother would have told them they didn’t believe in the spell itself, or even in the “wish.” Those who make a wish and believe it will come true, always comes true.

Now in the 21st century, it has become scientifically proven fact that “thoughts become things.” Quantum physics say that we draw thing to us, good and bad things through the law of attraction so of course a spell would work, even if we give it a scientific explanation. Magic has always been here and it has always worked.

Spells are the conscious desire and the mixing of elements with incantations, like following age old formulas much like your favorite chocolate chip cookie recipe, in order to have a desired effect come into being. Spells tap into the universe, which we are all part of, to aid in a desire, or a powerful intention. Spells also tap into your psyche. Spells are very simple rituals to make something happen in your life. I choose to make good things happen for me.

Casting spells is an age-old skill and talent used by many, but known to few. In casting a spell you frequently need to have the support of a god or goddess or universe to give you the ‘oomph’ you need. Picking the right deity is for some the first step. I choose the universe because everything I am, everything I use in all my spells are made of the same elements as the universe. So to me, a spell, is 10 times more powerful when I use the universe to help me manifest a desire or intention. You can call the universe anything you want, universe, spirit world, God, Goddess, you choose. I choose to call the universe God. My gypsy grandmother, Antolina’s deity was the Virgin Mary. Whatever you identify with best is what works best.

It is important to always be grateful for what has been given you, for what you have manifested in your life already. In order for a spell to work, a prayer of thanks for all you have should come first. Even if the only thing you have to be thankful for is the clothes on your back. The ancient gypsies were always grateful for what they had since many lived a “hand –to-mouth” existence. Therefore, the very food found that day was always appreciated.

Once you master the art of gratitude, THEN and only THEN can you truly master magic. The first step in invoking a magical way of life is Intent. Intent is the beginning of all Spells- the consciousness of what it is that you want or need help with, even how to get rid of something. It is the intent that helps with the focus and the desire to create the true magic and the start of what you want. Having too many desires or intents only clouds the ideas of what is it that you truly want. Is the spell that you consider casting realistic? To spend your magical energy on casting a spell or to get a job that you are unqualified to perform is not the best way to have a spell become real. Be pragmatic and be methodical. It is the same with any spell; you cannot cast a spell on someone to love you with whom you have had little contact. It just is not a strong enough connection.

Not only that, we are all given the gift and power of FREE WILL. NO magic can MAKE someone love you and dump his wife or girlfriend. Because he has his own power, his/ her own free will to choose to either like you or not. However, you can conduct a spell to change something within you. In other words you cast a spell to make someone notice YOU, or make them see qualities in you that are good for them, you can cast a spell on yourself, to make yourself more attractive to the person you wish to be with. Then you let it go into the universe and allow the universe to unfold the way it’s supposed to.

The next step in magic is to banish. You cannot create something new unless the old is taken care of. Clean the area where you will perform the spell. Look at it as performance art and you need a clear stage. Get rid of all that clutters your mind, heart and soul. Make your banishing internal. Do not perform magic with a full stomach, heart, or a stuffed soul. You need to be rested and tranquil. Your feet planted firmly in the astral plane where magic takes place. This is where you need to clean the space. Where you do your meditation or your holy spot in your home or garden. One of the key elements in casting a spell is to get a feeling of centeredness. It is not to your advantage to be thinking of your grocery list or your pile of things to do when you are ready to cast a spell for something like ‘health and well being.’ Keeping focused and in tune is the first step in the art of casting a spell.

Spread over the surface of your aura or energy field are various power points. These points are areas where your energy field varies. When you direct energy such as white light at these power points, you can shift the aura in positive ways so you can experience healing, love, and spiritual awakening. You do this intuitively, sensing with your heart rather than your mind.

 
You will need sage smudge, a partner, and a lawn chair. At midnight, go outdoors where you will not be disturbed. Don’t forget the matches. Light the smudge, and smudge yourself and your love, as well as the chair. Bathe everything in the smudge smoke for a few minutes with the intention of clearing all the unwanted energy. Thoroughly extinguish the smudge when you are done smudging.

 
Have your partner sit comfortably in the chair. Stand behind your partner, and take three deep, complete breaths to center your awareness. Relax your mind and body. Next, slowly move your hands about two inches above the surface of your partner’s body. Focus on the area between your hands and your partner’s skin. Continue doing this for a few minutes. Pay attention to how his or her body feels.

 
Close your eyes if it helps you sense the differences in the areas of the body. Feel the area with your being. Is the area hot or cool, for example? Remember to keep breathing deeply and remain in a relaxed state of mind as you continue to sense your partner’s energy field. When you come in contact with a power point, you may feel a definite tugging or pulling at your hands. Or you may feel a temperature shift, with the power point generally being warmer. The power point may feel sticky to your hands, or you may feel static electricity or a small spark-like sensation.
When you locate a power point, send white loving light from your hands and heart into the area. Do this by rubbing your hands briskly together for a minute and turning your mind to loving thoughts. Then place your hands, palms down, about one inch from the surface of the power point, and imagine directing white light energy into the spot. After you send light into about three power points, change places and have your partner find your power points. Keep in mind that each person’s power points are different and can shift from night to night.

The next essential element of spellcasting is to decide on your magickal goal. It is a good idea to write this down (unless it is very simple) and get as specific as possible. One of the trickiest parts of spellcasting is the balance between being as specific as you can on the one hand (so you are intensely focused on the purpose of your spell) while leaving an opening for the gods to grant your request in ways that you might not even consider (since in my experience, this is the way things happen, more often than not).

 
So if you are looking for that perfect job, you might want to specify that you want something that allows you to spend more time with your child, but not say “working out of my house,” in case there is an option that would allow you to work elsewhere but still have your child with you. See what I mean?

 
One way that is very helpful in crafting the perfect spell is to write down your goal and then look for the spell that mostly closely matches it. If there are elements in more than one spell that could be combined to create the perfect spell for your needs, by all means go ahead and take the bits and pieces you think will work the best. It’s all about creating the exact right tool for the job at hand.

 
Once you have your goal set, you can gather a few additional tools to boost the spell. I like Elizabeth Barrette’s explanation of why we use “extras” when casting a spell. She says, “Most spells combine words, actions, and objects to create a kind of `handle’ for the will to grasp, rather like using a wrench to tighten or loosen a nut that wouldn’t yield to fingers alone.”‘ In other words, the addition of specific items and actions can help to rev up our magickal engines, giving us even more power for the spell than we would get from using words alone.

 
This is because the addition of each extra element helps us to focus just a little bit more by reinforcing our intention to create a magickal result. So if you look for items that match the goal you have set, you will be adding another layer of intent to the energy you put out into the universe with your words.

 
How you choose the additional items is up to you. Some people look in books for spell correspondences-colors, moon phases, days of the week, herbs, oils, and more-that are often used for a specific task. For instance, when doing prosperity magick, many people use the color green, work their magick on a Thursday, and use basil or peppermint and maybe a piece of malachite or jade. On the other hand, there are many folks who simply use whatever items feel right to them. It is more a matter of style than anything else, and you can use whichever approach you prefer.
Working magick is not about following someone else’s instincts, after all; it is about listening to your own.

 
And sometimes you just have to make do with whatever you have on hand. If a spell needs to be done right away and you only have a white candle, by all means use that, and it will be fine. Remember that your will and intent are what truly matter here.
