Dealing With Stress at Yule-How to Have a Low-Stress Holiday

Dealing With Stress at Yule

-How to Have a Low-Stress Holiday

By , About.com Guide

It should be the happiest time of year, right? After all, the Yule season is when we celebrate the return of the sun, and the days start to get a little brighter. The mundane world is observing Christmas and Hanukah, gifts are being given all over the place — it should be a season of great joy. Yet for many people, late fall and early winter are a time when frustrations begin to build, and anxiety (and often depression) set in. Between getting together with family, preparing big meals, shopping for gifts, decorating the house, and spending money on others, for many people Yule can be a time of overwhelming stress. Here are a few tips on reducing your stress levels during the Yule season.

Set your limits.

Are you in charge of the community coat drive, the local toy roundup, and getting your entire PTO’s fundraiser up and running? Step back! Be willing to say “No” when someone asks you to commit more time and energy than you have to give. We all want to help others at this time of year, but if you take on more than you really are capable of, you’ll become resentful and angry – and that’s no way to spend the Yule season. Learning to say “No” might be the best gift you can give yourself this year.

Enlist help.

Feeling a bit overwhelmed by the eighteen boxes of Yule décor in your basement? Fine — put the kids to work. If you don’t have kids — or if yours are too young to decorate — put on a pot of wassail and invite a few friends over for a decorating party. It will take the stress out of the situation if you’re surrounded by people whose company you enjoy. Likewise, if you’re hosting a holiday dinner, ask others to show up early to set the table or to bring part of the meal as a side dish. I’ve learned that if I plan ahead, and just ask, I can usually get someone else to commit to taking care of cleanup afterwards!

Don’t overspend.

One of the biggest holiday stress-outs is the knowledge that you’ll be paying off Yule until June. Don’t let this happen. Make a budget, and stick to it. For more on how to do this, read about How to Have a Budget Friendly Yule. Also remember, you don’t have to go crazy with the gifts. Do you want to teach your children about the value of the holiday season, or that whoever gets more stuff wins? In many families, parents have learned to limit the number of gifts each person gets — in mine, each kid gets one really big gift, and then three smaller gifts such as a DVD, a pair of cute winter pajamas, and a game to play or a book to read.

Set boundaries.

A lot of people stress out over family relationships during the holidays. If you’re one of those people, you need to decide ahead of time how you’re going to deal with family members who aggravate you. Got a non-Pagan family member who just won’t leave you alone? Brush up on coping strategies at Surivivng the Holidays with Your Non-Pagan Family.

Decompress.

When you’re feeling overwhelmed in the middle of the season, and you know you still have things that need to get done, take a break. Turn off the phone, shut the door, and go have some Me Time. Take a one-hour power nap, enjoy a bubble bath with some nice scented candles, invite a friend out for a quick coffee date. Set aside a few minutes each day to meditate and get yourself grounded. You’ll appreciate it in the long run.

Recognize burnout.

A big problem many people seem to have is they just fail to realize they’re burning themselves out. Stress creeps up on us, and then we tend to justify it by saying, “Well, it’s the holidays.” Learn to recognize the signs of burnout, and react accordingly. Some signs include:

  • Depleted levels of physical energy
  • Lowered immune system, feeling run-down or ill
  • Lack of interest in things that you normally enjoy
  • Decreased sex drive
  • Negative, pessimistic outlook
  • Anger directed at people who don’t deserve it, like kids and sales clerks

If you start seeing these behaviors in yourself, it’s time to take a step back and recognize that you’re stressing out. Now that you’ve discovered the problem, take time to fix it, so that you and the people around you can have a happy and healthy Yule season.

Day 5: A Prayer for the Beginning of Winter
Patti Wigington
From Patti Wigington, your Guide to Paganism /Wicca
Take a moment to honor the changes of the season — even if it’s cold and windy! Despite the fact that it’s dark and gloomy, this is a necessary part of the ongoing cycle of life, death and rebirth. As you meditate upon this devotional, consider the benefits to the long, cold nights to come.

A Prayer for the Beginning of Winter

In early winter, we can see the skies becoming overcast, and smell fresh snow in the air. Take a few minutes to think about the fact that even if the skies are cold and dark, it’s only temporary.

See the gray skies overhead, preparing the way

for the darkness soon to come.

See the gray skies overhead, preparing the way,

for the world to go cold and lifeless.

See the gray skies overhead, preparing the way

for the longest night of the year.

See the gray skies overhead, preparing the way

for the sun to one day return, bringing with it light.

From Patti Wigington, your Guide to Paganism /Wicca
Feeling thankful for what you have? You should – it’s important that we count our blessings each and every day! Cultivate an attitude of gratitude during this season of giving and sharing. Take a moment to meditate upon the fortunes you have — and not just the material goods.

Counting Your Blessings – A Prayer of Thanks

Yule should be a time of joy and happiness, but for many people it can be stressful. This is a season to take a moment and be thankful for the blessings you have, and to take a moment to remember those less fortunate.

I am grateful for that which I have.

I am not sorrowful for that which I do not.

I have more than others, less than some,

but regardless, I am blessed with what is mine.

If you have a set of Pagan Prayer Beads, or a Witch’s Ladder, you can use these to enumerate your blessings, much as a Catholic would say a rosary. Count off each bead or knot, and consider the things you are thankful for, like so:
First, I am thankful for my health. Second, I am thankful for my family. Third, I am thankful for my warm home. Fourth, I am thankful for the abundance in my life….

Day 3: A Prayer to the Winter Goddess
Patti Wigington
From Patti Wigington, your Guide to Paganism /Wicca
Take a moment to embrace the chilly, icy weather of winter as Yule approaches. As you meditate on this devotional, take a moment to reflect upon the positive aspects of this dark season.

A Prayer to the Winter Goddess

Despite the fact that some people hate cold weather, it does have its advantages. After all, a good cold day gives us an opportunity to cuddle up indoors with the people we love the most.

O! Mighty goddess, in silvery ice,

watching over us as we sleep,

a layer of shining white,

covering the earth each night,

frost on the world and in the soul,

we thank you for visiting us.

Because of you, we seek warmth

in the comfort of our homes and hearths.

Yule is the time of the Winter Solstice, and for some Wiccans, it’s a time to say goodbye to the old, and welcome the new. As the sun returns to the earth, life begins once more — it’s a time to bid the Crone farewell, and invite the Maiden back into our lives. Celebrate the divine with a Goddess Rite for Solitaries or for Groups.

Patti Wigington
From Patti Wigington, your Guide to Paganism /Wicca
Welcome to the 12 Days of Yule Devotionals! We’ll begin today by taking a moment to honor the earth at the time of the Winter Solstice.
A Prayer to the Earth at Yule

Just because the earth is cold doesn’t mean there’s nothing going on down there in the soil. Think about what lies dormant in your own life right now, and consider what may bloom a few months from now.

Cold and dark, this time of year, the earth lies dormant, awaiting the return of the sun, and with it, life. Far beneath the frozen surface, a heartbeat waits, until the moment is right, to spring.

Wishing You A Super Blessed Wednesday, Dear Family & Friends!

This is a super, duper quickie……

I am running late because I have been doing some business for the WOTC. So I apologize for being late but I hope you can understand. In our daily editions of the WOTC, I am trying to include information that pertains to Yule. I have a favorite site I love to visit, About. com. This site has some great Wicca and Witchcraft information. There was an offer to sign up for a 12-days of Yule course. I thought wouldn’t that be fun. Then I would share them with all of you. I am just now checking my email and I am totally ashamed of myself. I have 5 lessons in there unopened. So today, in between posts, I will be sharing those courses with you. I hope you enjoy. If you find them useful, feel free to print them out.

Now that you have the low down on what’s going on, I got to run….

Have a very Blessed Wednesday, sweeties,

Luv & Hugs,

It Is A Very Blessed & Glorious Monday Morning, dear friends!

I truly hope you are having a very good Monday morning. I know this morning is much better than yesterday. Yesterday, I came to you with tears of sorrow. I must apologize I probably sounded like a babbling idoit or witch (in this case). But the news I received from WordPress truly upset me. It was a miracle that Annie came by and was able to finish up yesterday. I know she was also furious with WordPress and upset because I was. I know we have our disagreements at times but I am so fortunate to have her as a friend. I know you might think it is silly the way I reacted because this is “just” a website. But I feel very differently about it. To me, it is a work of love. I love the Goddess and I made a commitment to her. I cannot falter on the commitment. When I closed the old group on Yuku, I was off the internet for about two months. During those months, I was very depressed and felt like I didn’t have a friend in the world. Then one day something told me to get back on my computer. So I did. I realized what was missing in my life and what truly made me happy. It was spreading the message of the Goddess and my fellowship with other Pagans. As I started to look around for a place to start a new site, I was lost. The a voice in my ear whispered, “blog, do a blog.” I believe I was led to WordPress to start up a new Witches Of The Craft. I didn’t know anything about blogging.  I believe the Goddess took me by the hand and showed me. It was the Goddess’ love that built this site. You see that is why this is more to me than just a “website.” It is my commitment to Her that I must fulfill and continue. It is my love for you that I must continue. I have looked around the internet. There really isn’t anymore Pagan communities left on the net. That is another reason we must survive. All of the Pagan leaders, teachers and individuals, past and present, have brought the Craft this far. We must continue their work. Witchcraft must be brought to the forefront of mainstream Religion. The Pagan groups, blogs, websites that exist now, we must support all of them. Because together, we will bring Witchcraft back to its rightful place in history. Fifty years from now, our great-grandchildren will look back and see our painful past. They will also see were we persevered, fought on and made the Craft one of the foremost Religions in the world. For our children and their children, we must continue the fight. I have come to realize with the Goddess all things are possible.

When I left the site yesterday, my heart was breaking. I turned to the Goddess and let my soul and mind rest. I decided the fate of this site was in Her hands. If it was meant to be, it would. If we have gone as far as we were suppose to go, then I would accept it. Today, is a brand new day. My prayers are being answered and the Goddess’ will is being done. I come to you today with tears of joy. In one day, we have received enough donations to meet our domain payment. All things are possible with the Goddess. Thank you so much. I still can’t believe it. You are so wonderful and loving. I can never thank you enough. You are truly the greatest friends the WOTC and I have ever had. I consider each of you more than friends, you are my family. I wouldn’t know what to do if I couldn’t get up every morning and talk to you. I can feel your presence and your love. This is our home and it will continue to be our home, THANK YOU! I wish I could give each of you a great big hug. But unfortunately, I can’t. I am hoping you can feel my heart. It is singing with joy and gratitude.

I guess I better stop for now, I am starting to sound mushy. You will never see me mushy except on a day like today. It is a glorious and blessed Monday for the WOTC!

Thank You! Thank You! Thank You!

We love you,

Lady Of The Abyss & The WOTC

THANK YOU!

The Properties of Brass

Alchemy Comments
The Magickal Properties of Brass

Brass can be used as a substitute for gold for money attracting magick rituals and spells. A simple money attracting talisman that can easily be made is to inscribe a pentagram on a small piece of brass and carry it with you at all times. Brass is used for sun magick and fire magick, rituals and spells. Sun magick spells used to attract wealth and money should be performed at sunrise. Because brass has protective attributes it is used for defensive magick to protect and send back negativity to the sender. Brass jewelry is worn for this purpose during such rituals.

Living The Life of a Witch – Magick Starts With You

Magick Starts With You

Magick is natural. Magick requires effort. You will only receive what you actually place into it. Magick is usually not instantaneous. Spells require time to be effective. Magick is divine act. Magick is knowledge – not only of its ways or laws, but also of its effectiveness. Don’t believe magick works, Know it does. Magick is Love. The moment anger, hate or jealousy enters your magick, you endanger yourself and those around you. Love yourself and others, always considering free will. For to take the free will of another away, is to control – and magick is about love, free will and freedom, not control.  Better yourself, bring good things to you, but consider the consequences before casting. Use the magickal energy that the universe is made up of for good. And be sure that it harms none – not even yourself!

THE WICCAN WAY

THE WICCAN WAY

Recognizing that there is more than one path to spiritual enlightenment and that

Wicca is but one of many, and that Wicca holds within itself the belief that there is more than one type of step set to the spiral dance, find here listed common denominators of the Craft.

That there is above all the Goddess in her three-fold aspect and many are her names.  With all her names we call her Maiden, Mother and Crone.

That there is the God, consort and son, giver of strength and most willing of sacrifice.

That and it harm none, do what ye will shall be the law.

That each of her children are bound by the three-fold law and that whatever we create, be it joy or sorrow, laughter or pain, is brought back to us three-fold.

That as she is the mother of all living things and we are all her children, we seek to live in harmony not only with each other, but with the planet earth that is our womb and home.

That life upon the earth is not a burden to be born, but a joy to be learned and shared with others.

That death is not an ending of existence, but a step in the on-going process of life.

That there is no sacrifice of blood, for She is the mother of all living things, and from her all things proceed and unto her all things must return.

That each and every one of the children who follows this path has no need of another between themselves and the Goddess but may find Her within themselves.

That there shall not by intent be a desecration of another’s symbols of beliefs, for we are all seeking harmony within the One.

That each person’s faith is private unto themselves and that another’s belief is not to be set out and made public.

That the Wiccan way is not to seek converts, but that the way be made open to those who for reasons of their own seek and find the Craft.

And as it is willed, so mote it be

THE ABC’S OF A WICCAN LIFE

THE ABC’S OF A WICCAN LIFE
by Victoria Martyn

Accept others as they are. We are all individuals.

Belief in yourself is a necessity.

Concentration is important in any endeavor, both magickal and in life.

Do what you will, so long as it harms none.

Empathy is an important life skill… learn it, practice it.

Find strength in yourself, your friends, your world and your actions.

God is multifaceted… the Lord and Lady, all deities take many names and faces.

Help others every chance you get.

Intelligence is something that cannot be judged on surface.

Judge not… what you send out comes back to you!

Karma loves to slap you in the face. Watch out for it.

Learning is something that should never stop happening!

Magick is a wonderful gift- but it is not everything.

Nature is precious. Appreciate and protect it.

Over the course of time your soul learns many lessons. Make this life count!

Pray.

Quietness both physically and mentally restores the soul; meditate often.

Remember to take time for yourself as well as others.

Spells can help you, but you must also help yourself!

Tools can only do so much… they are not the foundation of all.

Unless you enjoy worrying, keep a positive mindset!

Visualize the success of your goals before you set out to achieve them.

Wisdom can often be found in the least expected places!

Xenophobia (a hatred of those different from you) is a path to misery.

You are a beautiful person who is capable of anything!

Zapping away all of your troubles is not going to happen

What is your Witch Potential?

What is your Witch Potential?

Reincarnation is a basic tenet of Witchcraft. Those of us fortunate enough to belong to the Craft believe that successive lives are enjoyed under the same zodiac sign. But unlike other ideologies Witchcraft imposes no demands for increasing excellence  – only that each life be lived to its fullest capabilities.

Most of us, despite centuries of indoctrination by the mechanized society, still have ties to the earth…some innate Witchcraft potential that can be developed.

Read the following questions and see how you react to them:

1. Have you always been intrigued by the occult?

2. Do you prefer night to day?

3. Does a storm stir in you an inexplicable sense of excitement?

4. Are you a sensualist?

5. Have you always felt different from most of those around you, set apart?

6. Do you instinctively respond to animals?

7. Are you comfortable alone?

8. Are you relatively indifferent to material possessions?

9. Have you had fleeting glimpses of former lives?

Should you find you can answer most of these questions in the affirmativeyour with potential is probably high and should be encouraged.

There is no church to join, no tribute to pay and no hierarchy to employ.

You, and you alone, must concentrate on the development of your own other-consciousness. Go to nature and observe. Attune your inner-mechanism to the quiet pace of the seasons and the procession of the constellations across the sky. Go alone, or with that person closest to you. Watch the moon rise, walk in the forests. Feel the earth, drink the water, breathe the air…then light the sacred candles and begin the life you were meant to live.

Eleven Things Every Witch Should Know

Witchy Comments & Graphics

Eleven Things Every Witch Should Know

1. Magic is what happens when you open yourself to the Divine. All real magic is
a manifestation of the Divine – it is how you co-create reality with deity.

2. The Divine is within you and is everywhere present in the natural world. And
everything is interconnected by this sacred energy.

3. Wicca is not about information — it’s about transformation, so practice,
practice, practice — and do it as much as possible in Nature! Witchcraft
enables you to commune with divinity and to manifest your destiny, your desires
and your highest and sacred self.

4. The real ethics of how Witches live and practice magic are simple: Witches
live in a sacred manner because we live in a sacred world. We therefore treat
all of life with reverence and respect.

5. Because all magic flows from our connection to the Sacred, our lives and our
magic, must be guided by the sacred nature of the energy with which we work.

6. The energy Witches work with is not neutral — it is divine love.

7. Magic often works in unexpected way because it is not a mechanical process,
and the Universe is not a machine. You are living and making magic within a
divine, organic, living reality.

8. Witches don’t command and control — they commune and co-create.

9. The real secret of successful spellcasting, as with all of magic, is your
connection to the Divine power that dwells within you, and surrounds you. And
spells do work so be careful what you ask for!

10. Nature makes the Divine tangible. By working, living, and practicing your
magic in harmony with Nature, you are in harmony with the Divine.

11. The ultimate teacher is the God/Goddess inside you and in the world of
Nature all around you.

One Spirit’s Domain

“Harm None”

Burning Times Comments & Graphics

Because Witches have been persecuted for so many centuries. Wiccans and Witches believe in religious freedom first! We do not look at this Path as the only way to achieve spirituality, but as one Path among many to be the same end. We are willing to share experience and knowledge with those who seek wisdom and perspective. Wiccans and Witches practice tolerance and acceptance toward all other religions as long as those faiths do not persecute others or violate the tenant of “Harm None.”

Living in Harmony & Achieving Balance

Witchy Cat Graphics & Comments
Wicca acknowledges the cycles of nature, the lunar phases and the seasons to celebrate their spirituality and to worship the Divine. It is a belief system that allows the Witch to work with, not in supplication to Deities with the intent of living in harmony and achieving balance with all things.
