ENARETE IN GREEK MYTHOLOGY

Though her name is not well known, Enarete is an important woman in Greek mythology.

ENARETE WIFE OF AEOLUS

Enarete was a queen Ancient Greece, for she was married to Aeolus, son of Hellen, grandson of Deucalion. Enarete herself was the daughter of Deimachus, a man about whom nothing else is known.

Aeolus ruled a land then known as Aeolia, though it would later be known as Thessaly, but he and Enarete would become the ancestors of all the Aeolian people; the Aeolians being one of the four ancient tribes, alongside the Achaeans, Dorians and Ionians.

There is no agreed on figure for the number of children born to Enarete, for her and Aeolus’ children varies depending on source being read, and over time more and more mythical figures were added.

SONS OF ENARETE

One early source, written by Hesiod, names five sons of Enarete; these sons being, Athamas, Cretheus, Perieres, Salmoneus and Sisyphus.

Athamas – a king of Boeotia, and father of Phrixus and Helle amongst others
Cretheus – a king of Iolcus, and father of Aeson, Pheres and Amythaon amongst others
Perieres – a king of Messenia, husband of Gorgophone, and father of Tyndareus amongst others
Salmoneus – an impious king of Elis, and father of Tyro
Sisyphus – an impious king of Corinth, father of Glaucus amongst others

Aeolus is the name of a few different characters in GREEK MYTHOLOGY, but the one most commonly associated with the name is the god of winds. He plays a key role in Homer’s Odyssey, in which he’s also known as the keeper of the winds. This Aeolus, from the story, was originally human, but in later classical writings he was treated as only a god.

Aeolus – God Of Wind

The god of wind was the son of Hippotes, who was mortal. Aeolus himself was king of the island of Aeolia and befriended ODYSSEUS when his crew was stranded on the island. The friendship led to Aeolus bagging up all the winds except a gentle westerly wind, which would help Odysseus get home (this Aeolia was located near Sicily, and in real life is part of the Lipari Islands). But his crew got greedy and, after deciding the mysterious bag must hold untold wealth, opened the bag and released the other winds, which only prolonged their journey home.

In Other Myths

Aeolus is also the name of a half-human son of POSEIDON, the OLYMPIAN GOD of the sea, and the name of another human who may have been the ancestor of the other two. The god-of-wind and son-of-Poseidon Aeoluses are often confused by writers.

The third Aeolus, the son of Hellen and a nymph, Orseis, married Enarete and lived in another area called Aeolia, which later became Thessaly. This version had a daughter named Arne, who later gave birth to the Aeolus who was the son of Poseidon. The son of Poseidon, when not conflated with the god of wind, is sometimes treated as a grandfather of the god of wind, and also as the founder of Lipara in the Lipari Islands. It was extremely confusing to Greek writers and historians, too.

Animals who participate in your spells and rituals, enhancing them with their own powers, tend to fall into one of two categories:

The concept of an animal as a pet is a modern one. Those who possessed this concept of interspecies friendship ahead of their time often found themselves condemned for witchcraft on grounds of familiarity with demonic creatures like cats, birds, rabbits, black dogs, reptiles, and amphibians. Sound like what’d find for sale in any local pet store? Well, familiar animals are exactly that: Familiar. The classic witch’s cat, rabbit or toad, a familiar is an actual, individual animal with whom one can live and share an intense psychic, personal bond. If this characterizes a relationship you have ever had with an animal, then you have had a familiar, regardless of whether you engaged in magickal practices together. A dog who won’t sleep unless it’s under your bed, the cat who follows you from room to room the bird who spends the day perched on your should: these all qualify as familiars.

A familiar’s presence may be sufficient to spark and enhance your magick, whether there is any conscious active involvement or not. For others, the psychic and magickal bonds possible between animal and human create profound power and satisfaction and working closely with other species–those species that usually do not life amongst people—-may discover psychic and magickal bonds, as well. Wild animals that remain wild can also qualify as familiars, though invariably they choose you rather than the other way round. These include those birds or bees that, taking a liking to someone in the family, stop by daily. Scandinavian witches traditionally favored flies as familiars. Wild dolphins occasionally single out as individual human and initiate a relationship. It is not unknown for people living on the edge of woods or in a wilderness place to develop a special relationship with an individual creature.

A familiar is a specific, individual creature with whom you have established a psychic bond. Of course, the limits the creatures with which you can magickally interact. What if your magick requires a rhinoceros or crocodile? What if it requires a dragon or unicorn?

A familiar may be considered an animal ally but animal allied transcend the boundaries of familiars. Animal allies are a form of spiritual relationship: because the relationship may occur entirely in the realm of spirit, any animal may be approached. The presiding spirit of the animal may also be approached, rather than any individual creature.

A person may have as many familiars and/or allies as needed.

Archangel – One Viewpoint for Thier General Description

Archangels (/ˌɑːrkˈeɪndʒəl/) are the second lowest rank of angel in the hierarchy of angels. The word “archangel” itself is usually associated with the Abrahamic religions, but beings that are very similar to archangels are found in a number of other religious traditions.

The English word archangel is derived from Greek ἀρχάγγελος (arkhángelos), the Greek prefix “arch-” meaning “chief”. A common misconception is that archangels are the highest rank of angel. This misconception stems from John Milton‘s Paradise Lost and likely confusion over the “arch-” prefix.

Michael and Gabriel are recognized as archangels in Judaism, Islam, and by most Christians. Some Protestants consider Michael to be the only archangel. Raphael—mentioned in the deuterocanonical Book of Tobit—is also recognized as a chief angel in the Catholic and Eastern Orthodox churches. Gabriel, Michael, and Raphael are venerated in the Roman Catholic Church with a feast on September 29 (between 1921 and 1969, March 24 for Gabriel and October 24 for Raphael), and in the Eastern Orthodox Church on November 8 (if the Julian calendar is used, this corresponds to November 21 in the Gregorian). The named archangels in Islam are Jibra’il, Mika’il, Israfil, and ‘Azra’il. Jewish literature, such as the Book of Enoch, also mentions Metatron as an archangel, called the “highest of the angels”, though the acceptance of this angel is not canonical in all branches of the faith.

Some branches of the faiths mentioned have identified a group of seven Archangels, but the named angels vary, depending on the source. Gabriel, Michael, and Raphael are always mentioned; the other archangels vary, but most commonly include Uriel, who is mentioned in 2 Esdras.
