One Way of Reading Druid Ogham

What is Ogham?

Ogham is a divination system like Tarot cards or runes that is also a system of writing used by the ancient Celts known as Druids.  Ogham letters (also called Fews) are made up of simple lines that can be inscribed on any convenient surface.  They are read from the bottom up.

Each Ogham letter stands for a type of tree, and the characteristics of that tree (prickly like holly, flexible like willow) grant the Ogham its insights into human nature. Just as each Tarot card should be studied for its individual meaning and its relationship to other cards, Ogham were meant to be studied one by one. This website is the product of my own discursive meditations with Ogham.

Individual Ogham letters are often engraved on sticks or printed on cards in order to use them for divination. To read Ogham as one would read Tarot cards or runes, any number of spreads can be utilized from asking a simple yes or no question where you pull a single Ogham stick/card to complex interpretations of a dozen Oghams thrown on a table or on the ground reveal the future depending on the angles at which they fall. I personally prefer a simple three Ogham reading. I do it every day sometime in the morning. In my mind or out loud, I ask the Ogham: “What do I need to know in order to make the best out of today?” and then reach my hand into the box where I keep my Ogham tiles. Then I pick three of them and lay them side by side.

(One Person’s VIew) Ogham Divination Meanings and their Historical Significance

Discover the fascinating world of Ogham divination and its meanings. This guide will teach you the historical background, symbolism, and significance of Ogham divination, while the video above will teach you how to create your own Ogham divination set (save it for the end!).

Lora O’Brien, founder of the Ogham Academy (and author of this article), has been studying and working with the Ogham for almost 30 years, while devoting the most recent of those years to a Masters in Irish History, and a thesis on the topic of the Ogham and Irish Identity.

What is Ogham Divination?

Ogham divination is a modern way in which Contemporary Pagans, and those generally interested in divination, may predict future happenings, communicate with beings or entities such as Gods or Ancestors, or gain deeper insight and understanding of past, present, and future situations and events.

You will hear elsewhere that ‘it is an ancient Celtic system of fortune-telling and symbols which has been used for thousands of years by Druids and Shamans’… but the reality is, we have no reliable historical evidence on whether the Ogham was used for divination or magical practice.

What we do have are tantalising archaeological hints, and manuscript references which were recorded at a much later date, and in a very different context, to the events, situations, or stories they purport to be telling us about.

There are those of us, even within academic settings, who believe that while we absolutely MUST clearly understand and study the archaeology, linguistics, and historical source material that does remain to us with regard to the Ogham… we can also extrapolate and develop a modern spiritual, magical, and divination practice that is fulfilling and authentic to what we do actually know, while organically growing from and beyond the admitted restrictions of the evidence.

Ogham Divination Meanings

Ogham Divination uses a set of 25 symbols, based on the letters of the ancient Irish Gaelic script. Each symbol represents the letter name, is related to the others within its original Aicme or grouping, and holds a key to many layered deeper meanings which can be used to interpret a person’s life.

Depending on the context, each Ogham letter or Fid can take on a different meaning. While we do provide suggested meanings below, we strongly encourage you to study the original source materials and develop your own ‘kennings’ for each of the Feda (‘letters’) of the Ogham.

Though most Neo Pagan and New Age sources will tell you that Ogham Divination meanings come from some sort of ‘Celtic Tree Oracle’, this is unfortunately, inaccurate.

Though very popular, this nonsense comes from a misunderstanding that the Ogham alphabet is ALL about trees, and each ogham divinatory meaning is related to trees, or worse, a ‘Celtic Tree Calendar’.

Though we can blame Robert Graves for much of this, as he published it in his pseudo academic (but actually fiction and romantic poetry) book, the White Goddess. (More on that by Morgan Daimler Here).

Even leading Ogham scholars such as Damien MacManus have been frustrated by this focus within academia, as he stated in 1988:

Weekly Horoscope Sunday, February 16 to Saturday, February 22, 2025

All Signs

Early Tuesday morning the Sun will enter the watery sign of Pisces to stay for 30 days. (This happens once a year.) Because Pisces is the last sign in the zodiac, many will feel a sense of closure about things. People will be more intuitive. Their “Spidey sense” will be heightened. They will feel more sympathetic, charitable, helpful and ready to offer emotional support. Because creativity and imagination are magnified, this is a fabulous window of time for artists, musicians and writers. Most will remember their dreams more than usual. Admittedly, Pisces can be big on denial and wanting to avoid the harsh realities of life. “They took some of the Van Goghs, most of the jewels and all of the Chivas!”

Aries (March 21-April 19)

The next four weeks are a time of introspection. Many of you will be drawn to solitude, meditation or exploring your inner world. As you do this, some hidden matters might be exposed or secrets will be revealed. You might even see the truth of something that you were reluctant to admit to yourself. However, this propensity to be private and dig deeper into things will help you to do research, work in solitude and discover hidden answers or solutions to old problems. It’s also a good time to reflect on the past year and decide how you want your new year to be different. Write down your thoughts. You’re full of optimism, which is wonderful!

Taurus (April 20-May 20)

Your popularity will increase in the next four weeks because you’re more social and outgoing! You’ll enjoy time with friends as well as groups and organizations. You might join a group because networking opportunities will present themselves to you. In fact, teamwork will be your motto for the month ahead. This is also one of the best times of the year to define some long-term goals. Why not bounce your ideas off someone to get their feedback? (Could be helpful.) Many of you will be more involved in social media, technology and polishing your online presence. Be open to new friendships and networking opportunities. Get out and schmooze!

Gemini (May 21-June 20)

The Sun is at the top of your chart for the next four weeks, which means people will notice you more than usual. And they’ll admire you because symbolically, you’re in the limelight – and this light is flattering! Another aspect of this placement of the Sun is that it’s the perfect time to examine your life as a whole, and see if you’re going in the direction you want. Think about your career, your role in society and your standing and your reputation in your community. (Some will deal with a parent more than usual.)

Cancer (June 21-July 22)

For the next four weeks, you want more out of life! You want adventure, the thrill of discovery, learning new things and meeting new people. Ideally, you want to travel so that you can have a change of scenery. But if you can’t travel, you still want the stimulation of fascinating conversation and the surprise of exploring your own city. You might sign up for a course. You might go back to school. You might learn a new language. You might explore opportunities in publishing, the media or medicine and the law. Whatever the case, with Mars in your sign now, you will seek what you want with gusto! Enjoy these explorations!

Leo (July 23-Aug. 22)

Financial issues are on your mind right now. This is why the next four weeks will focus on reducing your debt and dealing with shared finances, shared property, banking matters, taxes, insurance issues and the wealth and resources of someone else. You want to be on top of your game because you want financial security. You might also meet someone who provokes some soul-searching or self-inquiry. (This is fitting because you have a strong desire to experience life on a feeling level not just intellectually.) Privately, you might notice compulsions surfacing within yourself leading to behaviour that surprises you or behaviour that you don’t understand. (Like your sudden interest in probiotics.)

Virgo (Aug. 23-Sept. 22)

Once a year for four weeks, the Sun is opposite your sign, which means it’s as far away from you as it can get all year. (We’re not talking 93 million miles; we’re talking 6 inches in your chart.) Because the Sun is your source of energy, this symbolizes that your energy will be flagging, which means you’ll need more rest and more sleep. (Go to bed.) However, this polarized position of the Sun will also focus your attention on your closest relationships. You’ll be more aware of how you operate within the relationship. Actually, this is a blessing because it gives you a chance to look at your style of relating with someone in order to see how you can improve how you respond to them.

Libra (Sept. 23-Oct. 22)

You’re gung-ho to be efficient and productive in the next four weeks, which means you’ll get a lot done. Not only will you set yourself high standards in terms of your work or your job, by extension, you will set yourself high standards in terms of how to improve your health. (Oh yes, you want it all.) And why not? This is why you will strive to make every action count. However, you might have to work for the benefit of someone else as well as your own. For example, you might have an obligation to someone else? Don’t worry because you will not be a martyr in this situation. Au contraire. Very likely, you’ll find it a joy to be of service.

Scorpio (Oct. 23-Nov. 21)

Lucky you! In the next four weeks, your primary drive will be to do exactly what you want and be exactly who you are. You’ll put a strong emphasis on pleasure, amusement and recreation. This window is the perfect time for a vacation and certainly a great time to socialize with others. You will enjoy the company of children, as well as sports events, hobbies, arts and crafts and anything related to the fine arts and the entertainment world. Relationships will be more lighthearted. The Sun will encourage you to make time for fun activities and to prioritize joy. Expect to feel more enthusiastic, more optimistic and ready for adventure!

Sagittarius (Nov. 22-Dec. 21)

Home, family and your private life will be your primary focus in the next four weeks. This happens only once a year and when it does, it’s an opportunity for you to interact more with family, especially parents. However, this is also a wonderful chance for you to relax among familiar surroundings. It’s totally appropriate to go off by yourself and contemplate your navel. If you do, you might be surprised with the childhood memories that come up in your mind. This is also a good time to talk to counsellors or professionals about your family life. You might find that behaviour patterns that were triggered in the past are no longer appropriate or useful.

Capricorn (Dec. 22-Jan. 19)

In the next four weeks, the pace of your days will accelerate. Short trips, errands and appointments plus spending more time with siblings, relatives and neighbours will keep you active and eager to do exciting things. Probably, your busy schedule will include increased reading, writing and studying. This is a great time to travel and take a vacation because your attention with your immediate surroundings will be stronger. You might be more aware of your style of communicating with others. For example, you might see that instead of listening, you’re waiting for your turn to speak. This is the perfect window of time to tell someone how you feel about them, or to discuss a particular subject because your mental process will be clear.

Aquarius (Jan. 20-Feb. 18)

You value your independence. You need space to think, and to be creative and be yourself. For the next four weeks, you’ll have more interest in cash flow and earnings because you want to make your life easier through what you own – especially your possessions. Does your stuff help you or hinder you? This is an excellent time to examine your relationship to your possessions and determine whether they serve your needs or vice versa. You’ll also be delighted with a particular purchase or something that comes to you. In fact, you might want to show it off to others. No doubt you will be more vocal with others about your values because you’re willing to stand up for what you believe.

Pisces (Feb. 19-March 20)

For the next four weeks, the Sun is in your sign. This happens only once a year and when it occurs, it boosts your energy and your confidence! The Sun also has the ability to attract favourable situations and people to you. Plus, with the Sun in your sign, you’ll project yourself more dramatically when talking to others, which gives you an excellent advantage if you teach, act or speak to groups. Admittedly, this could create problems in relationships because you might be too talkative and too bossy. This is a lovely opportunity for you to recharge your batteries for the rest of year. With Mercury in your sign as well, you’ll be talkative and full of ideas. Others will listen to you because you’ll put a great deal of yourself into what you have to say.

(One Person’s View) How to Channel Through Automatic Writing

Over time, I’ve developed rituals and practices with the aim of increasing my creative flow: to overcome writer’s block and to find inspiration in my daily life. I smudge my space, practice yoga first thing in the morning, and look for ways to expand my consciousness to open my mind. Through these self-exploration processes, I discovered automatic writing.

Automatic writing is a form of channeling, where you allow a higher power to create or guide the words that you write. It involves allowing Spirit, the universal mind or your higher self to simply flow through you.

When I first began my journey into the spirit world, I didn’t realize that I was physically connected to my guides. I never realized how easy it was to access information from my subconscious or higher powers without the need of a medium. Only after I began to hone my intuition and expand my creative process did I discover the accessibility of channeling. Automatic writing has become my go-to for inner exploration.

What is Automatic Writing

Automatic writing is a form of channeling, where you allow a higher power to create or guide the words that you write. It is a psychic gift and one of the easiest types of psychic communication abilities to develop. It involves allowing Spirit, the universal mind or your higher self to simply flow through you.

Simply put, automatic writing is a practice of exploration experienced during a trance-like state where the journalist is an observer of the stream of consciousness. During an automatic writing session, the writer allows whatever flows through them to be written or typed into their chosen medium until the flow ends. Anyone can learn the process. My own experiences have been truly enlightening as I became the scribe and simultaneously the observer. In many ways, practicing automatic writing is like being ‘in flow’ while writing.

There are many books in circulation that are channeled works, such as:

(One Person’s View) How to Know Whether You’re Really Channeling Your Soul

The best way to know for sure that you’re receiving guidance from your Soul is how you feel while writing.

Do you feel a sense of inner spaciousness, lightness, and other good “vibes”? Or do you feel heavy, emotionally charged, and mentally frantic?

In my experience, I know for sure that I’m connecting with Soul/Spirit when I enter a state of no-mind in which I am completely present, calm, and at peace.

However, when writing becomes frantic and heavy, it is usually coming from the mental or emotional energy “body” – also known as the conscious self or ego.

Another way to tell whether you’re really channeling your Soul is by reviewing what is written.

Are the words authoritative, clear, and wise? Or are the words closer to what your mind sounds like (disjointed, critical, or vague)?

Words from your Soul will always sound and feel crystal clear.

I hope this advice helps you out and inspires you to begin practicing automatic writing.

Welcome to WOTC! A Thought and a Little Humor for Today

Even though it was a busy day off it helped clear my mind and I’m recharged to bring you today’s posts. Today will be busy with posts, Big Dawg’s job, and grocery shopping before the snow storm hits starting late tonight. I am so looking forward to the snow! I make a snow angel every year because my inner child loves them along with a small snowman for Crystal and Merlin to have fun knocking down. SO I have on my “Let it Snow” sweat shirt and singing in my head “Let it snow, Let it snow, Let it snow!” Winter is by far my favorite season of all four of them.

If it is going to snow or whatever other cold type weather you may be getting please be careful, use extra caution and leave plenty of time for wherever you may need to go. If you would like to accept it I have put a protection spell for your automobile in this sentence to help keep you safe while traveling.

All Signs

Valentine’s Day is a sweet oasis in a hectic week ahead. However, even Valentine’s Day will have a spontaneous quality, so don’t over plan. Meanwhile, we’re getting closer to Feb. 24 when Mars retrograde will be over. Glory hallelujah! Mars went retrograde in Leo on Dec. 6, and a month later, it slipped back into Cancer where it still is. When Mars is retrograde, people lash out and prematurely end things or sever bonds. Hidden anger simmers beneath the surface causing problems everywhere. Major equipment breakdowns and delays occur. Plans don’t work out. Both Canada and the US are Cancer countries. (July 1st and July 4th) Mars was retrograde in Cancer in 1928, 1931, 1945-46, 1960, 1975, 1978, 1992-93, 2007 and this year 2025. In 2 1/2 weeks, life will move forward more easily. (It’s always darkest before it gets pitch black.)

Aries (March 21-April 19)

Life has been difficult because you feel frustrated with family members. This anger might even be unconscious, which means that you might act compulsively or inappropriately and then wonder why. It’s hard to get things done at home. You might begin projects in different areas, only to find them stalled in the water. Grrr. Meanwhile, something has upset your home routine. Interactions with parents might be particularly challenging. Fortunately, on the upside, relations with friends, groups and organizations are positive, enthusiastic and full of purpose. And one final blessing – with fair Venus in your sign, you find it easy to be charming and diplomatic. Sweet!

Taurus (April 20-May 20)

In some ways, life has been lurching along. I say lurching because at times, it feels like it’s two steps forward, one step backwards. For example, your communications with others have not been on the usual even keel that you like to maintain. As a rule, you don’t get really angry, because if you do, it’s game over and you know it. (This is why you’re always in control.) But lately, your communications, especially with siblings, relatives and neighbours have been tested – and I mean tested. Fortunately, the Sun at the top of your chart is saving the day by making you look attractive to others, which ameliorates everything. In fact, their admiration warms and softens you.

Gemini (May 21-June 20)

Mars retrograde makes you concerned about finances. You don’t want to repeat past mistakes and you don’t want to spend impulsively. You might have a conflict with someone about financial issues or your possessions, which create feelings of self-doubt; and you might catch yourself second-guessing whether you’re being too aggressive or too passive about what you want to do. (It’s a Gemini thang, which twin is talking?) Meanwhile, make plans to travel or do something for a change of scenery because this will lift your spirits! You will impress parents, bosses and authority figures with your word dazzle. (Some people have a way with words. Some not have way.)

Cancer (June 21-July 22)

Mars retrograde makes you feel fatigued and lacking in confidence and drive. (And yet, you can be irritated with others.) You might question your appearance and wonder about your wardrobe or your hair or the image you create on your world. The bottom line is once again, you’re second-guessing yourself. Ironically, the truth of the matter is that fair Venus is at the top of your chart making you appealing and charming to everyone, especially authority figures. Furthermore, you feel confident about financial negotiations and decisions about shared property, inheritances, taxes and debt because you’re on top of your game. Relax.

Leo (July 23-Aug. 22)

By nature, you’re confident and optimistic, as well as flirtatious and romantic. (Oh sure, there’s more but do we have time?) The thing is that Mars has been retrograde in a hidden part of your chart, and will continue doing this for the next few weeks. This is why you are secretly nursing the worst fears about yourself. You doubt your abilities as a parent, a lover, a friend, a boss, an employee, a leader and so on. Fortunately, these crippling thoughts are temporary. Admittedly, with the Sun opposite your sign this month, you’re tired and you need more sleep. A change of scenery will make you feel better. You have great ideas about your finances as well. You’ll be strong and vibrant by the end of the month.

Virgo (Aug. 23-Sept. 22)

Relations with friends have been a bit bizarre because at times, you might be questioning your ability to be a good friend. You wonder if you’ve made enough effort to nourish your friendships. Ironically, you might feel irritated with a friend, but at the same time, you can’t assert yourself or discuss it. These are self-critical, self-doubting thoughts triggered by Mars retrograde going through your House of Friendships. The truth is because you are so observant and always willing to help others, your friends love you. Meanwhile, this is a lovely, productive time for you. In addition, romance is affectionate. Let these feelings of self-doubt go because by the end of the month – they’re history.

Libra (Sept. 23-Oct. 22)

You present well because you’re colour coordinated and well-dressed. As a people pleaser, you’re also charming. (Libra is one of the most attractive signs of the zodiac.) That’s why it’s curious that you doubt your ability to make a great impression right now? You might be worried about the image you create on bosses and important people because you feel you’re not receiving the recognition you deserve. In turn, this could trigger misunderstandings with bosses; and make you reassess your goals and wonder about your direction in life. Fortunately, this is also a fun-loving, playful time for you, which is why you’re enjoying socializing, meeting friends in restaurants and taking time for romance and vacations. Live it up!

Scorpio (Oct. 23-Nov. 21)

Travel delays have been disappointing. You might have had to cancel trips or revise travel plans. Meanwhile, interactions with others might be challenging because of heated debates and misunderstandings about philosophy, religion, politics and racial issues. These are hot topics. In fact, they could lead to thinking about getting further education or training. Perhaps you want to sharpen your media skills because you have plans about how to network better or reach out to others. Many of these ideas will start to come to fruition by the end of the month – but not before hand. Meanwhile, focus on home repairs and family to feel the greatest rewards this week. This is also a creative time for you!

Sagittarius (Nov. 22-Dec. 21)

Optimism is a survival issue because it’s vital that you have a positive frame of mind for you to do what you want and to achieve your goals. Right now, you’re worried about financial issues related to banking, mortgages, loans, inheritances and the resources and wealth of your partner. You seem to be second-guessing yourself and others. In one way, you think you know what you should do – but then, suddenly you’re not sure. These feelings are triggered by Mars retrograde in one of your Money Houses. Wait until after February 24, and you will know what to do. In the meantime, stay busy. Enjoy short trips. Talk to others. Take a course or learn something new!

Capricorn (Dec. 22-Jan. 19)

Your closest relationships have been challenging because Mars has been retrograde opposite your sign. One of the biggest things you’ve been dealing with is repressed anger, either on your part or the part of someone else, which can mushroom into an argument at the drop of a hat. Be reassured that after February 24, whatever conflict you feel with someone else will be better defined and more easily understood. This will be less frustrating because you will know what’s going on. Fortunately, you’re on top of your earnings and your money scene. This is good. In fact, your confidence is strong. Enjoy redecorating at home. Invite someone over to see what you’ve done.

Aquarius (Jan. 20-Feb. 18)

You are one sharp cookie. Many of you are computer geeks, scientists and activists because you want to make the world a better place. But lately, your confidence at work sucks. You’re not sure about the security of your job, as well as whether or not you’re dazzling others like you used to. Things are vague. Fear not, this self-doubt about your performance related to your work and even the state of your wellness or health is related to Mars retrograde. The good news is that Mars will no longer be retrograde after February 24. Fortunately, with the Sun and Mercury in your sign now, you’re confident and attractive to others. (This is a temporary dark cloud on your horizon.)

Pisces (Feb. 19-March 20)

For those of you who are parents, relations with your kids has been confusing. In fact, you might question your ability as a parent or a teacher. Likewise, romance has been in the toilet. No matter what you do, things seem to go sideways. Some of this has been due to a latent anger or hostility that you are finally expressing. And some of it is due to feeling distracted and not focused the way you usually are. After February 24, things will improve immensely! Trust me. In the meantime, keep a low profile. However, on Valentine’s Day, Mercury will move into your sign making you chatty and talkative to everyone. It’s all good. Everything will work out.
