(One Person’s View) A Short Introduction to Celtic/Druid Ogham or Ogma Alphabet and How to Use it For Divination

The Celtic’s used a writing system called Ogham or sometimes spelled Ogma which dates hundreds of years BCE (Before the Current Era). Most of the time the credit for the alphabets origins are given to the Druid Priests. As only they could read the meanings of the “Ogham Staves” when they were thrown. The Ogham alphabet consists of 25 different symbols which in turn are associated with specific trees or shrubs.

The alphabet can either be written vertically or horizontally but the actual marking for the symbol or letter always appears on the same side and location on the straight line that all the symbols/letter stem off of.

The Ogham Staves are used as a form of divination. You can use them the same as you would Runes or Tarot cards. To make Ogham Staves they should be craved into a piece of the tree or shrub they are associated with, all 25 pieces of wood should be the exact same length and when possible diameter.

How to use the staves is simple you hold them together in both hands, and roll them on your palms while you ask your question of them (be sure to keep your question clear and concise). When you feel it is time and with the question firmly fixed in your mind you let the staves drop from about 4 to 6 inches off the ground. Those closest to you are the future, the middle ones are for the present, and those furthest away are read for the past which led up to the present which will lead into the future.

Here is a picture of the alphabet writing, name of symbol/letter, and which tree or shrub is associated to it:

Other examples of the alphabet:

Here is are the symbols/letters on the tree or shrub they are associated with:

One Way of Reading Druid Ogham

What is Ogham?

Ogham is a divination system like Tarot cards or runes that is also a system of writing used by the ancient Celts known as Druids.  Ogham letters (also called Fews) are made up of simple lines that can be inscribed on any convenient surface.  They are read from the bottom up.

Each Ogham letter stands for a type of tree, and the characteristics of that tree (prickly like holly, flexible like willow) grant the Ogham its insights into human nature. Just as each Tarot card should be studied for its individual meaning and its relationship to other cards, Ogham were meant to be studied one by one. This website is the product of my own discursive meditations with Ogham.

Individual Ogham letters are often engraved on sticks or printed on cards in order to use them for divination. To read Ogham as one would read Tarot cards or runes, any number of spreads can be utilized from asking a simple yes or no question where you pull a single Ogham stick/card to complex interpretations of a dozen Oghams thrown on a table or on the ground reveal the future depending on the angles at which they fall. I personally prefer a simple three Ogham reading. I do it every day sometime in the morning. In my mind or out loud, I ask the Ogham: “What do I need to know in order to make the best out of today?” and then reach my hand into the box where I keep my Ogham tiles. Then I pick three of them and lay them side by side.

(One Person’s VIew) Ogham Divination Meanings and their Historical Significance

Discover the fascinating world of Ogham divination and its meanings. This guide will teach you the historical background, symbolism, and significance of Ogham divination, while the video above will teach you how to create your own Ogham divination set (save it for the end!).

Lora O’Brien, founder of the Ogham Academy (and author of this article), has been studying and working with the Ogham for almost 30 years, while devoting the most recent of those years to a Masters in Irish History, and a thesis on the topic of the Ogham and Irish Identity.

What is Ogham Divination?

Ogham divination is a modern way in which Contemporary Pagans, and those generally interested in divination, may predict future happenings, communicate with beings or entities such as Gods or Ancestors, or gain deeper insight and understanding of past, present, and future situations and events.

You will hear elsewhere that ‘it is an ancient Celtic system of fortune-telling and symbols which has been used for thousands of years by Druids and Shamans’… but the reality is, we have no reliable historical evidence on whether the Ogham was used for divination or magical practice.

What we do have are tantalising archaeological hints, and manuscript references which were recorded at a much later date, and in a very different context, to the events, situations, or stories they purport to be telling us about.

There are those of us, even within academic settings, who believe that while we absolutely MUST clearly understand and study the archaeology, linguistics, and historical source material that does remain to us with regard to the Ogham… we can also extrapolate and develop a modern spiritual, magical, and divination practice that is fulfilling and authentic to what we do actually know, while organically growing from and beyond the admitted restrictions of the evidence.

Ogham Divination Meanings

Ogham Divination uses a set of 25 symbols, based on the letters of the ancient Irish Gaelic script. Each symbol represents the letter name, is related to the others within its original Aicme or grouping, and holds a key to many layered deeper meanings which can be used to interpret a person’s life.

Depending on the context, each Ogham letter or Fid can take on a different meaning. While we do provide suggested meanings below, we strongly encourage you to study the original source materials and develop your own ‘kennings’ for each of the Feda (‘letters’) of the Ogham.

Though most Neo Pagan and New Age sources will tell you that Ogham Divination meanings come from some sort of ‘Celtic Tree Oracle’, this is unfortunately, inaccurate.

Though very popular, this nonsense comes from a misunderstanding that the Ogham alphabet is ALL about trees, and each ogham divinatory meaning is related to trees, or worse, a ‘Celtic Tree Calendar’.

Though we can blame Robert Graves for much of this, as he published it in his pseudo academic (but actually fiction and romantic poetry) book, the White Goddess. (More on that by Morgan Daimler Here).

Even leading Ogham scholars such as Damien MacManus have been frustrated by this focus within academia, as he stated in 1988:

Weekly Horoscope Sunday, February 16 to Saturday, February 22, 2025

All Signs

Early Tuesday morning the Sun will enter the watery sign of Pisces to stay for 30 days. (This happens once a year.) Because Pisces is the last sign in the zodiac, many will feel a sense of closure about things. People will be more intuitive. Their “Spidey sense” will be heightened. They will feel more sympathetic, charitable, helpful and ready to offer emotional support. Because creativity and imagination are magnified, this is a fabulous window of time for artists, musicians and writers. Most will remember their dreams more than usual. Admittedly, Pisces can be big on denial and wanting to avoid the harsh realities of life. “They took some of the Van Goghs, most of the jewels and all of the Chivas!”

Aries (March 21-April 19)

The next four weeks are a time of introspection. Many of you will be drawn to solitude, meditation or exploring your inner world. As you do this, some hidden matters might be exposed or secrets will be revealed. You might even see the truth of something that you were reluctant to admit to yourself. However, this propensity to be private and dig deeper into things will help you to do research, work in solitude and discover hidden answers or solutions to old problems. It’s also a good time to reflect on the past year and decide how you want your new year to be different. Write down your thoughts. You’re full of optimism, which is wonderful!

Taurus (April 20-May 20)

Your popularity will increase in the next four weeks because you’re more social and outgoing! You’ll enjoy time with friends as well as groups and organizations. You might join a group because networking opportunities will present themselves to you. In fact, teamwork will be your motto for the month ahead. This is also one of the best times of the year to define some long-term goals. Why not bounce your ideas off someone to get their feedback? (Could be helpful.) Many of you will be more involved in social media, technology and polishing your online presence. Be open to new friendships and networking opportunities. Get out and schmooze!

Gemini (May 21-June 20)

The Sun is at the top of your chart for the next four weeks, which means people will notice you more than usual. And they’ll admire you because symbolically, you’re in the limelight – and this light is flattering! Another aspect of this placement of the Sun is that it’s the perfect time to examine your life as a whole, and see if you’re going in the direction you want. Think about your career, your role in society and your standing and your reputation in your community. (Some will deal with a parent more than usual.)

Cancer (June 21-July 22)

For the next four weeks, you want more out of life! You want adventure, the thrill of discovery, learning new things and meeting new people. Ideally, you want to travel so that you can have a change of scenery. But if you can’t travel, you still want the stimulation of fascinating conversation and the surprise of exploring your own city. You might sign up for a course. You might go back to school. You might learn a new language. You might explore opportunities in publishing, the media or medicine and the law. Whatever the case, with Mars in your sign now, you will seek what you want with gusto! Enjoy these explorations!

Leo (July 23-Aug. 22)

Financial issues are on your mind right now. This is why the next four weeks will focus on reducing your debt and dealing with shared finances, shared property, banking matters, taxes, insurance issues and the wealth and resources of someone else. You want to be on top of your game because you want financial security. You might also meet someone who provokes some soul-searching or self-inquiry. (This is fitting because you have a strong desire to experience life on a feeling level not just intellectually.) Privately, you might notice compulsions surfacing within yourself leading to behaviour that surprises you or behaviour that you don’t understand. (Like your sudden interest in probiotics.)

Virgo (Aug. 23-Sept. 22)

Once a year for four weeks, the Sun is opposite your sign, which means it’s as far away from you as it can get all year. (We’re not talking 93 million miles; we’re talking 6 inches in your chart.) Because the Sun is your source of energy, this symbolizes that your energy will be flagging, which means you’ll need more rest and more sleep. (Go to bed.) However, this polarized position of the Sun will also focus your attention on your closest relationships. You’ll be more aware of how you operate within the relationship. Actually, this is a blessing because it gives you a chance to look at your style of relating with someone in order to see how you can improve how you respond to them.

Libra (Sept. 23-Oct. 22)

You’re gung-ho to be efficient and productive in the next four weeks, which means you’ll get a lot done. Not only will you set yourself high standards in terms of your work or your job, by extension, you will set yourself high standards in terms of how to improve your health. (Oh yes, you want it all.) And why not? This is why you will strive to make every action count. However, you might have to work for the benefit of someone else as well as your own. For example, you might have an obligation to someone else? Don’t worry because you will not be a martyr in this situation. Au contraire. Very likely, you’ll find it a joy to be of service.

Scorpio (Oct. 23-Nov. 21)

Lucky you! In the next four weeks, your primary drive will be to do exactly what you want and be exactly who you are. You’ll put a strong emphasis on pleasure, amusement and recreation. This window is the perfect time for a vacation and certainly a great time to socialize with others. You will enjoy the company of children, as well as sports events, hobbies, arts and crafts and anything related to the fine arts and the entertainment world. Relationships will be more lighthearted. The Sun will encourage you to make time for fun activities and to prioritize joy. Expect to feel more enthusiastic, more optimistic and ready for adventure!

Sagittarius (Nov. 22-Dec. 21)

Home, family and your private life will be your primary focus in the next four weeks. This happens only once a year and when it does, it’s an opportunity for you to interact more with family, especially parents. However, this is also a wonderful chance for you to relax among familiar surroundings. It’s totally appropriate to go off by yourself and contemplate your navel. If you do, you might be surprised with the childhood memories that come up in your mind. This is also a good time to talk to counsellors or professionals about your family life. You might find that behaviour patterns that were triggered in the past are no longer appropriate or useful.

Capricorn (Dec. 22-Jan. 19)

In the next four weeks, the pace of your days will accelerate. Short trips, errands and appointments plus spending more time with siblings, relatives and neighbours will keep you active and eager to do exciting things. Probably, your busy schedule will include increased reading, writing and studying. This is a great time to travel and take a vacation because your attention with your immediate surroundings will be stronger. You might be more aware of your style of communicating with others. For example, you might see that instead of listening, you’re waiting for your turn to speak. This is the perfect window of time to tell someone how you feel about them, or to discuss a particular subject because your mental process will be clear.

Aquarius (Jan. 20-Feb. 18)

You value your independence. You need space to think, and to be creative and be yourself. For the next four weeks, you’ll have more interest in cash flow and earnings because you want to make your life easier through what you own – especially your possessions. Does your stuff help you or hinder you? This is an excellent time to examine your relationship to your possessions and determine whether they serve your needs or vice versa. You’ll also be delighted with a particular purchase or something that comes to you. In fact, you might want to show it off to others. No doubt you will be more vocal with others about your values because you’re willing to stand up for what you believe.

Pisces (Feb. 19-March 20)

For the next four weeks, the Sun is in your sign. This happens only once a year and when it occurs, it boosts your energy and your confidence! The Sun also has the ability to attract favourable situations and people to you. Plus, with the Sun in your sign, you’ll project yourself more dramatically when talking to others, which gives you an excellent advantage if you teach, act or speak to groups. Admittedly, this could create problems in relationships because you might be too talkative and too bossy. This is a lovely opportunity for you to recharge your batteries for the rest of year. With Mercury in your sign as well, you’ll be talkative and full of ideas. Others will listen to you because you’ll put a great deal of yourself into what you have to say.
