The Etiquette of Witchcraft

This article by M. Macha NightMare appeared in the Summer 1996 issue of the
Reclaiming Newsletter.

The Etiquette of Witchcraft, Reclaiming Style

The greater community of Witchcraft- throughout the U.S. and abroad- has a few rules of etiquette of which to be cognizant.  I am well aware that ours is not a religion of “rules” (especially in the ecstasy-based Reclaiming Tradition), but in order for us to be free of inhibitions, to feel we are in “safe space,” to get the most out of what we are doing and to protect those whose identity as Witches were it revealed, would compromise them in their mundane lives, it is imperative that everyone know and agree to abide by the following general
policies:

1.  First and foremost, a magickal circle is not for observers; it is participatory and experiential.  A circle is a religious rite and all participants should conduct themselves in a manner respectful to the Goddess. If one is not prepared to focus and contribute his/her attention and efforts to
the ceremony, one does not belong in the circle.  If one does not wish to participate, s/he should excuse her/himself before the pre-rite meditation and grounding begins.

2.  The taking of photographs is inappropriate and impermissible.  As noted in item 1 above, the ritual, and memories of it, are to be carried in one’s heart; they are not a proper subject for objective observation and documentation.  The exception to this is when all participants have been asked before the ritual has begun, and all agree; or when the ritual is “staged” specifically for the taking of photographs, filming or videotaping. Photographing rituals requires special tact and sensitivity.

3.  Craft groups and circles are not inviolably solemn, but they are serious in central purpose.  Inappropriate talking, joking, laughing, etc. are not only rude and disrespectful of the Goddess, the Mighty Ones, the priest/esses of the ritual  and other celebrants, but also they interfere with concentration and continuity of the ceremony.  She commands us to have mirth and reverence; humor and laughter are gifts of the Goddess.  Our attitude, conduct and energy should reflect both the joyousness and the solemnity of this our celebratory religion. There will be a period within the ritual for the sharing of food, drink and good wishes, and time for conversation and merrymaking.

4.  Since traditional lore teaches that consecrated object easily absorbs energy (becomes “charged”), tools, such as wand, chalice, athame, jewelry, drum and other ritual regalia, should not be touched by someone other than the owner without the owner’s express permission.

5.  Once the circle is cast, all celebrants should consider themselves in it for the duration.  It is preferable for one to take care of personal needs before the ritual is begun, but if one finds it necessary to use the toilet, feels faint or whatever, one can either ask for assistance or “cut a door” in the circle and leave, carefully closing and sealing it afterwards.  The circle is intended to contain the energy and focus, and when it is casually entered and exited, that energy can become dissipated or lost and focus shattered.

6.  Anyone who is drunk, stoned or otherwise inebriated does not belong in circle.  In addition, the use of drugs or alcohol (this includes the smoking of cigarettes) in circle is unacceptable behavior; it can show disrespect and it puts the user(s) on another wavelength than the nonuser(s).  The exception to this is when the use of chemicals is sacramental and understood and accepted by everyone in the circle.

7.  People who invite others to rituals are responsible for preparing the guest(s) as to what is expected of them, how to behave, etc.  Guests cannot be expected to know what’s going on all on their own, especially if it’s their first Craft ritual, but much can be done by the person who invites them to make them feel more comfortable and included by giving them some information ahead
of time about how things work and how people are expected to behave.

8.  What occurs in circle is sacred and not to be talked about with those who were not part of the circle.  This mainly applies to small, private rituals, and we in Reclaiming are more casual about rehashing big public ones, but if one is invited to a ritual presented by another Craft tradition, this rule is inviolate.

The above guidelines are freely adapted from archival material graciously provided by Valerie Voigt. Many thanks for reading and observing these few, simple, common-sense, but essential, guidelines.

What is Chaos Magick?

What is Chaos Magick? by Willow

You may have heard of chaos magick and assumed that it means to cause chaos with magick. You may also assume that this type of magick is dark and violent and not for you, so before you continue reading, I ask you to open your mind.

Open your mind to remove the idea of tradition and the way you’ve learned to do magick. Open your mind to a new experience.

Chaos magick is not about causing turmoil or “chaos” using magick.

This practice isn’t about anything dark, it’s about creating a new reality or re-ordering your existing reality to make changes and create the life you want.

While it doesn’t follow a traditional formula for crafting, the word chaos most likely evolved from the shift from orderly rites and rituals to something outside of that refined practice. It may even seem to be unruly and disorderly if you are used to a certain way of doing things, but it works.

Science has validated the frequency and energy of the universe, and this form of magick was born out of theory that we can create our own reality because we control our experiences. We also can create our experiences and present ourselves in a new reality, making the changes necessary to experience the life that we want. Nothing is out of our control.

As above, so below

Down here, we effect the astral plane and are part of the cosmic matter of the universe. We are all from the same energy that surrounds the universe.

As above, So below, As Within, So Without

As above – as in the universe relates to your own mind.
As below – so on earth, relates to the world you live in.
As within – how we think within ourselves
As without – how what we think is directly reflected in the world we live in

As we live our lives, what we think we make our reality. If we are negative, we will create negative energy and stay on a lower frequency. If we are positive, we create positive energy and rise to a higher frequency – and going further with the belief that like attracts like, we are the creators of our own reality.

Basically, what is inside of us is also outside of us.

The concept was first laid out in the Emerald Tablet of Hermes Trismegistus: “That which is Below corresponds to that which is Above, and that which is Above, corresponds to that which is Below, to accomplish the miracles of the One Thing.” – source: Wiktionary

The law of correspondence means our outer world is the reflection of our inner world. So how do we change it?

Chaos magick puts the focus on the simplistic way of changing our own reality through results and our experiences by focusing on our belief that it works, and so it does.

The basis of chaos magic is simple

Your emotions drive your magick. If you are a member of my Lunar Alchemy Facebook group, you’ll hear me say over and over:

It’s about holding that FEELING. It’s about changing your habits, beliefs and the way you present yourself to the world on a higher frequency.

What you experience effects your reality and feeling like you’ve already succeeded with your magick is what makes chaos magick work.

There aren’t any tools required. You don’t need an altar, candles or even a wand to perform chaos magick, however as we know that our ritual tools help us to focus and concentrate our energy, use whatever works for you – there are no rules. Having an open mind means opening up so that you make room for new energy and clear the path.

Chaos magic is about using whatever ideas, tools or practices make it work for you, even if they contradict what you have previously used in your craft.

Your belief is where the power exists

The power of belief is where your magic resides. When we try to impose our will upon the universe, we try to tell it what it will do and hope that we get results. How frustrating! Will it work? Did I perform the ritual correctly? When we BELIEVE our magick works, it changes the game.

Our magick is personal, and the power is inside of us all. Our tools and words help us to focus but other than that, there is no power except for what we believe in. We embrace it as FACT that it works and that is has already worked.

The 6 Principles of Chaos Magick

To practice chaos magick, there are 6 key principles we must embrace.

July 23, 2023 Moon’s Current Phase and Northern Hemisphere’s Planetary Positions

Moon’s Current Phase

You can use this link to go forward or backward in time for Moon phase information. If you are curious, you can even find out what phase the Moon was in when you or anyone else was born.

From MoonGiant.com

The Moon’s current phase for today and tonight is a Waxing Crescent Phase. Best seen in the west after the sun dips below the horizon at sunset. This is the first Phase after the New Moon and is a great time to see the features of the moon’s surface. The moon is close to the sun in the sky and mostly dark except for the right edge of the moon which becomes brighter as the days get closer to the next phase which is a First Quarter with a 50% illumination.

Visit the July 2023 Moon Phases Calendar to see all the daily moon phase for this month.

Today’s Waxing Crescent Phase

The Waxing Crescent on July 23 has an illumination of 27%. This is the percentage of the Moon illuminated by the Sun. The illumination is constantly changing and can vary up to 10% a day. On July 23 the Moon is 5.15 days old. This refers to how many days it has been since the last New Moon. It takes 29.53 days for the Moon to orbit the Earth and go through the lunar cycle of all 8 Moon phases.

Phase Details

Phase: Waxing Crescent
Illumination: 27%
Moon Age: 5.15 days

All Signs

This is a great week for productivity because people are pumped and ready to work. Then, oh joy, the weekend morphs into the perfect time to socialize and enjoy romantic date nights, sports outings plus urban explorations and picnics at the beach. Summer is upon us, along with scant clothing and bathing suits. Alas – no puffer coat under which to hide! This harsh reality prompted a 180 with my food intake. No dairy. No carbs. No fruits. No herbaceous vegetables. No meat. No chicken. No fish. Every morning with shaky anticipation, I face that moment of truth. I step on those bathroom scales hoping for a magical transformation. (Surely intention counts for something?) Of course, I weigh myself before putting on moisturizer and make-up, and I empty my head of all thoughts.

Aries (March 21-April 19)

This is a productive week for those who work in the entertainment world, show business, the hospitality industry, the world of sports and anything related to children. Not only will you accomplish a lot, you will enjoy doing so. Take it easy on Monday because on that day, you have to compromise with others. For the rest of the week however, look for ways to boost your earnings. Delegate to others. Roll up your sleeves and dig in. After working hard this week, you’re ready to reward yourself with a fun-filled weekend, possibly even a mini vacation? Make plans for some fun outings because romance will dazzle. This is a particularly strong week for those of you involved in creative projects.

Taurus (April 20-May 20)

This is a productive week! Since you have a strong focus on home, family and real estate, this is likely where you will put a lot of effort. You might tackle home repairs or do some serious redecorating projects. Fortunately, you have positive gusto and optimism because lucky Jupiter is in your sign, which will help you to get a lot done. Nevertheless, this is also a playful, fun-loving week for you! On Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday, be accommodating because the Moon is opposite your sign, which means you have to go more than halfway when dealing with others. No biggie. Interaction with a parent could be significant this week. Have fun on the weekend!

Gemini (May 21-June 20)

It’s time to put your big girl pants on and get to work. The pace will be busy this week but you will be stimulated by it. Plan on short trips, errands, appointments plus discussions with others, especially relatives and siblings. Interactions with others will be smooth and friendly – no worries! You might tackle some home repairs. Meanwhile, figure out how to cope with interruptions on the home front due to visiting guests, residential moves or DIY projects. This weekend is a wonderful time to socialize; nevertheless, because the Moon is opposite your sign – be sweet talking and accommodating. After all, your objective is to be happy and have a good time.

Cancer (June 21-July 22)

A busy week! This is an excellent time for business and commerce, plus financial negotiations. In fact, you can attract money to you this week. You will be busy with appointments, short trips and errands. It’s a strong week if you are in sales, marketing, teaching, acting or writing because you will say what you mean and mean what you say. Respect your moneymaking ideas. Expect to spend money on beautiful things for yourself and loved ones. You might even make money related to the arts, antiques and beautiful objects. Socialize and enjoy the company of others this weekend. Be ready to help someone.

Leo (July 23-Aug. 22)

Timing is everything. Right now, many things are in your favour. The Sun and Venus are in your sign. Mercury is also in your sign until Friday; and until June of next year, lucky Jupiter is sitting at the top of your chart. (Like, wow.) This is a major bonus and happens only once every 12 years. Jupiter will attract work-related travel and increased dealings with other cultures and countries. It’s a time for promotions at work, public recognition and enjoying some increased respect and esteem from your peers. All these astrological aspects combine to make this a winning time for you! Knowing this, don’t waste this opportunity. Go after what you want!

Virgo (Aug. 23-Sept. 22)

This year and well into next year, marvellous opportunities to travel and educate yourself will expand your world. You can also explore avenues in publishing, the media, medicine and the law. This week in particular, you will be happy to work behind the scenes and keep a low profile. A secret love affair is possible. On Friday, Mercury enters your sign to join fiery Mars, which means you will be more confident to speak up and assert yourself. The pace of your days will accelerate. Midweek will be busy; however, by Friday, you might want to cocoon at home to gather your strength for an exciting, dazzling weekend!

Libra (Sept. 23-Oct. 22)

This is a popular time for you because there are three planets in your House of Friendships. This means you will enjoy hanging out with friends more than usual. In particular, you might hang out with younger people as well as creative, artistic types. A platonic relationship might turn romantic? This is also an excellent time for you to think about your future goals. For example, you might seek out feedback from a friend about what you want to do in your future. Since this is also a time when you have increased involvement with clubs and organizations, perhaps a colleague will have ideas for you? It’s very easy to get the support of others now – both practical and financial.

Scorpio (Oct. 23-Nov. 21)

It’s time for you to take a bow. Once a year, for four weeks, the Sun sits at the top of your chart, and when this occurs, it symbolizes that the Sun is shining down on you and thrusting you in a spotlight. Furthermore, this spotlight is flattering, which means others – especially bosses, parents and people in authority – see you as capable, competent and super effective. (Even if you don’t do anything special.) Consider this a bonus from the heavens. But note: this is a real phenomenon that is taking place. Knowing this, you can make things happen! This means that starting this week until August 22, you can demand the advantage and go after what you want because people are impressed with you! Use this.

Sagittarius (Nov. 22-Dec. 21)

You’ll be happy to hear that this is the time to expand your experience of the world. Obviously, the ideal choice would be to travel somewhere, especially to travel somewhere new and exciting. If you can’t travel, you can certainly be a tourist in your own town. Go places you’ve never been before. Explore new shops, new restaurants, new neighbourhoods. Meanwhile, on Friday, Mercury moves to the top of your chart, which increases your interest in your professional life and your desire to undertake new studies that can boost your career. It’s a good time to talk to bosses, employers or anyone who can help you. Your ambition is aroused and you’re full of ideas!

Capricorn (Dec. 22-Jan. 19)

In the next few weeks, you will have an increasing desire to be more in touch with your inner self. This might even lead to behaviour that you don’t understand. You might feel some compulsions that steer you in new directions. You definitely want to experience life on a feeling level – not just an intellectual understanding. As a result, you might encounter someone that produces a need within you for psychological self-inquiry. You might also be more concerned with finances and shared property or the wealth of your partner. You will also have a strong desire to study, learn and travel. This is important stuff.

Aquarius (Jan. 20-Feb. 18)

This is the only time all year when the Sun is opposite your sign. Furthermore, both Mercury and Venus are also opposite your sign, which increases your focus on your closest relationships. You feel you’re getting to know this person better. Perhaps you have new and fresh observations? Venus will make these relationships warmer and cozier. Meanwhile, energetic Mars is in a sexy part of your chart — so many of you are getting really cozy. (Say no more.) If you are living with a partner or spouse, this influence combines beautifully with the fact that this year and well into next year, is a wonderful time for you to improve family relationships – as well as your home. Bonus!

Pisces (Feb. 19-March 20)

This week you’re swinging into work mode. You’ve decided it’s time to roll up your sleeves and dig in. You have your own To Do list about you what you want to accomplish – and you will do it. Venus will help you to get along with coworkers, friends and colleagues who might be of assistance. This is good. Admittedly, with Mars opposite your sign, you might feel more aggressive than usual with partners and close friends. Conflict is possible. But if you channel your energy into work (whether you get paid for it or not), this will be a gratifying experience for you. You will feel a personal sense of reward as well as pleasure from seeing the results of your efforts. Even your health will get a boost!

Good Day WOTC Family and Friends!

This is me and proud of it!

I came out of the broom closet about 4 decades ago. I don’t just talk the talk of being a witch/pagan I always try to walk the walk.

Sorry for the missing days but living in a rural area it takes longer to fix things. I will get the missing birthday horoscopes up today along with some of today’s daily and tomorrow’s posts. I am also not going to have specific posting times for today like I usually do because I am playing catch up.
