Red Crepuscular Rays from an Eclipse

Image Credit & Copyright: Fefo Bouvier

Explanation: What’s happening behind that island? Things both expected and unexpected. Expected, perhaps, the pictured rays of light — called crepuscular rays — originate from the Sun. Unexpected, though, the Sun was being partially eclipsed by the Moon at the time — late last month. Expected, perhaps, the Sun’s rays are quite bright as they shine through gaps in below-horizon clouds. Unexpected, though, the crepuscular rays are quite red, likely the result an abundance of aerosols in Earth’s atmosphere scattering away much of the blue light. Expected, with hope, a memorable scene featuring both the Moon and the Sun, superposed. Unfortunately, from this location — in Uruguay looking toward Argentina — clouds obscured the eclipse — which wasn’t completely unexpected. However, after packing up to go home, the beauty of bright red crepuscular rays emerged — quite unexpectedly. Oh — and that island on the horizon — it’s really two islands.

Weekly Horoscope Sunday, May 29 to Saturday, June 4, 2022

Click here for Georgia Nicols daily horoscopes

All Signs

This month has been busy with appointments, visits and hectic schedules. By contrast, this week begins on a more mellow note. However, a speedbump on Wednesday will make tempers flare when the Moon is at odds with fiery Mars. Basically, our biggest challenge will be dealing with Mercury retrograde, which began on May 10 in Gemini. Last week, Mercury slipped back into Taurus. This week, it will go direct on Friday, and stay at the same degree for six days, then slowly move forward covering old ground. This creates confusion, delays, mistakes and missed appointments. I feel its influence as I write these words. (In Rome, I used to be called Smarticus; but today I’m Uptititus.)

Aries (March 21-April 19)

Your fast pace continues as the Sun travels through your House of Communications. It is accelerating the pace of your days with short trips, communications with everyone, appointments and errands. Fortunately, fiery Mars is now in your sign boosting your energy, giving you focus, a sense of purpose and a strong drive. Physical exercise will be a wise choice to burn off any pent-up energy building up within you. Mercury retrograde can help you restructure financing or finish financial matters. It might even help you get a job where you applied before. Meanwhile, Venus encourages fun shopping and buying beautiful things for yourself and loved ones. It will also attract money to you. Ka-ching!

Taurus (April 20-May 20)

Your focus on finances continues to be strong. In fact, at a deeper level, some of you are giving thought to your deeper values. In other words, you’re asking yourself, “What really matters?” Fortunately, fair Venus, your ruler, has just moved into your sign, which paves the way for smoother communications with others because Venus always makes you more diplomatic and charming. (Take note: the next few weeks are an ideal time for you to shop for wardrobe treasures.) Meanwhile, old friends and ex-partners are back in your life because Mercury retrograde slipped back into your sign last week. On a more sinister note, be aware of anyone who might suddenly be working against your best interests. If you think something fishy is going on – it is.

Gemini (May 21-June 20)

You continue to be empowered because the Sun is in your sign. (It stays there until the summer solstice of June 21.) Appreciate this good fortune! It attracts important people and good situations to you. Meanwhile, fiery Mars and Jupiter will encourage your popularity, especially with groups. Many of you will be involved more than usual in a competitive way with others, probably physical sports. Secret love affairs and exciting flirtations might take place behind the scenes. (You love the adoration of your friends.) Naturally, your everyday world suffers from delays, goofy mistakes and misplaced items because Mercury is retrograde, and Mercury is your ruler. (!) Stay on top of potential car problems.

Cancer (June 21-July 22)

Your personal year is coming to an end; but your new year will not begin until the summer solstice on June 21. This means you feel a bit like you’re in limbo. And in a way, you are. The ideal way to use this “in between” time is to do some soul-searching and think about your deeper values in life. What principles guide you? Because Jupiter is at the top of your chart this year, (something that can occur only once every 12 years), you look good to others. People admire you, especially bosses and VIPs. Therefore, it’s important for you to have self-confidence and a clearer idea of who you are. The more you can determine this – the more you will shine in your world!

Leo (July 23-Aug. 22)

Your popularity continues! Take advantage of opportunities to socialize with others. Reach out to meet someone for coffee or lunch. Renew old friendships and enjoy getting involved again with groups and organizations. Many of us have lost our social skills to Covid isolation. This is the perfect time for you to begin to flex those social muscles and get in contact with others. Enjoy schmoozing! You actually look very attractive to the world right now because fair Venus is at the top of your chart promoting relations, even flirtations with important people. Some of you will fall in love. Nevertheless, all your personal relationships are favoured now. Make plans to travel if you can because you want a change of scenery!

Virgo (Aug. 23-Sept. 22)

The Sun is at the top of your chart for the next three weeks. (This happens only once a year.) Therefore, make the best of this! Symbolically, it means that the Sun is “shining down on you”. Furthermore, this light is flattering! Therefore, this influence means that important people, bosses, parents, teachers and anyone in a position of power see you (almost magically) as very capable, very competent. They admire your achievements – even though you don’t do anything different. (Go figure.) It really is magic lighting! Since this is a once-a-year blessing, demand the advantage in financial matters, discussions about inheritances, making travel plans or exploring publishing options. You hold the winning hand!

Libra (Sept. 23-Oct. 22)

For the next three weeks, your desire to travel and get a change of scenery continues to be strong. Therefore, grab every chance to take a short trip or a long one! This same influence will help you to study and explore new ideas. You might also open opportunities in publishing and the media. It definitely favours legal matters and the study of law. Meanwhile, fiery Mars is now opposite your sign, which can create tension and conflict dealing with partners, fellow workers etc. On the other hand, you are a people pleaser; and Mars will give you the courage to speak up and defend yourself. This could be a good thing. (Keep your pockets open because money and gifts will come your way.)

Scorpio (Oct. 23-Nov. 21)

You feel passionately about everything right now! (Your feelings are heightened.) It will be helpful to practice techniques like counting the breath, so that you have more mind control. If you don’t control your mind, it will be running the show! Fortunately, favourable things are helping you now. Fiery Mars makes you want to work hard and work efficiently. Meanwhile, fair Venus is opposite your sign paving the way for smooth relations with others. This is particularly timely because you are contacting old friends and hearing from ex-partners since Mercury Retrograde has slipped back to oppose your sign. This could be an opportunity for closure and clarification with someone. Take it.

Sagittarius (Nov. 22-Dec. 21)

Remember to get more sleep this week because symbolically speaking (in your chart) the Sun is now as far away from your sign as it can get all year. (And the Sun is your source of energy.) Meanwhile, Mercury retrograde has not only resurrected people from your past (now that it has slipped back into Taurus), it will create problems and delays in your work. Equipment problems, staff shortages, misplaced items, late deliveries and goofy mistakes are frustrating. No question. Fortunately, Venus will help you accept these frustrations with grace and civility. Your relations with coworkers will still be friendly and warm. Competitive sports are on the menu for many. This is timely because you are physically active and assertive! “I am!”

Capricorn (Dec. 22-Jan. 19)

You’re not a slacker; and this week is another example of how you will accomplish a lot because you work hard! Incidentally, not only will you be working hard, whatever you do will also boost your health and overall vigour. It’s wise to focus on any task that you set for yourself to get away from the chaotic activity taking place at home, which can create family tension. Fortunately, offsetting this, fair Venus and Mercury Retrograde bring you opportunities to socialize, slip away on a vacation, enjoy good times with others, enjoy the arts and also enjoy playful activities with kids. Romance will also be saucy! (Old flames are back in the picture.)

Aquarius (Jan. 20-Feb. 18)

Lucky you! The Sun will continue to promote opportunities for vacations, playful outings, fun activities with kids, the arts, and abundant opportunities to express your creative talents for the next three weeks! (“Mom always liked you best.”) Nevertheless, many of you are enjoying entertaining at home along with redecorating where you live because relatives and family members you haven’t seen for a while are visiting, and hopefully, helping you with some projects. Your optimism and enthusiasm are very strong now because both Mars and Jupiter are in your House of Communications. This is a fantastic opportunity for those of you who sell, market, teach, act or write. Yada, yada, yada

Pisces (Feb. 19-March 20)

Home and family continue to be your primary focus for the next three weeks. (This includes increased interactions with a parent.) You will feel happy to nest and cocoon at home because you feel safe. You welcome the security of familiar surroundings. Meanwhile, you will work hard to earn money, which is a good thing because you will be earning more money this year. Yay! You will get richer! Nevertheless, at the moment, Mercury retrograde will create car problems, transportation delays, mixed-up communications, missed appointments and silly, goofy mistakes. On the upside, you will enjoy meeting friends and relatives you haven’t seen for a while. “Hail fellow, well met!”

A Thought for Today

Moon Alert

Avoid shopping or important decisions from 10 AM to 1:30 PM EDT today (7 AM to 10:30 AM PDT). After that, the Moon moves from Taurus into Gemini.

Aries (March 21-April 19)

Today you have boundless energy because your ruler Mars is lined up with Jupiter in your sign. It doesn’t get better than this! This is a day of great activity where you will work hard to further your own interests and assert yourself among others. Look out world!

Taurus (April 20-May 20)

This might be a tricky day for you because it’s easy to fall into self-defeating behaviour where you create a poor impression or undermine your position even though you don’t mean to do so. Ironically, you have lots of energy! Make sure you channel it in the right way.

Gemini (May 21-June 20)

This is a fabulous day to define goals and start to actively pursue them because you have lots of energy to deal with others, especially friends and groups. You will excel at physical activity with others, especially in groups or in competition. Grab the baton and run!

Cancer (June 21-July 22)

Because your ambition to achieve is aroused today, you will work extremely hard. However, you want independent authority over whatever you do because you want to be your own boss today. This could make relations with a supervisor or boss a bit touchy. Easy does it.

Leo (July 23-Aug. 22)

Today you’re full of joie de vivre and enthusiasm for life! This is why you want to make travel plans or do anything to expand your horizons. You will also be keen to defend your beliefs and your ideas about politics and religion because today you are bold and confident!

Virgo (Aug. 23-Sept. 22)

You will have no trouble protecting your own best interests in discussions about inheritances or how to share or divide something today because you are pumped with enthusiasm, confident and optimistic! This is why others will listen to you even if you encounter disputes.

Libra (Sept. 23-Oct. 22)

You are a people pleaser; however, today you will be unusually confident dealing with friends and partners. This is why you will stand your ground if someone has any grievance with you. This includes legal conflicts and lawsuits. Note: Be open to compromise for a win-win solution.

Scorpio (Oct. 23-Nov. 21)

This will be a super productive day for you because you are keen to work hard and accomplish as much as possible. You have lots of physical energy, which means whatever you do, you will do with strength and vigour! Very likely, you will delegate to others as well. “Move that mountain!”

Sagittarius (Nov. 22-Dec. 21)

This is a fantastic day for competitive sports and physical athletics. You will also enjoy fun outings with children and entertaining diversions. However, your energy is so pumped, be careful about taking risks both physically or gambling. Know your limits.

Capricorn (Dec. 22-Jan. 19)

Today you have tremendous energy that you will apply to making home improvements or winning an argument with a family member. This is because you are confident and convinced about what you want to achieve. However, remember that others have their own ideas as well. Right?

Aquarius (Jan. 20-Feb. 18)

You can do a lot today because you are confident, enthusiastic and optimistic. This is why your communications with others will be positive and persuasive, which in turn, makes this a strong day for those in sales, marketing, teaching, acting and writing.

Pisces (Feb. 19-March 20)

You are confident in financial negotiations today. However, your confidence will be so strong, you must be careful. Don’t take unnecessary risks in financial ventures or financial speculation. Something might look better than it actually is. Do your homework.

If Your Birthday Is Today

Actress Annette Bening (1958) shares your birthday today. You are clever, bright and communicative. Your fast mind generates lots of impressive ideas. You have a charming personality but are guarded about your personal life. This year is a time of work, construction and building both in a physical sense as well as inner structures in your life.

Explanation: How do clusters of galaxies form? Since our universe moves too slowly to watch, faster-moving computer simulations are created to help find out. A recent effort is TNG50 from IllustrisTNG, an upgrade of the famous Illustris Simulation. The first part of the featured video tracks cosmic gas (mostly hydrogen) as it evolves into galaxies and galaxy clusters from the early universe to today, with brighter colors marking faster moving gas. As the universe matures, gas falls into gravitational wells, galaxies forms, galaxies spin, galaxies collide and merge, all while black holes form in galaxy centers and expel surrounding gas at high speeds. The second half of the video switches to tracking stars, showing a galaxy cluster coming together complete with tidal tails and stellar streams. The outflow from black holes in TNG50 is surprisingly complex and details are being compared with our real universeStudying how gas coalesced in the early universe helps humanity better understand how our EarthSun, and Solar System originally formed.

Moon Alert

There are no restrictions to shopping or important decisions today. The Moon is in Taurus.

Aries (March 21-April 19)

Keep an eye on your money and possessions today because something unexpected could impact your assets. For example, you might find money or you might lose money. Likewise, something you own might be stolen, lost or damaged. Be alert.

Taurus (April 20-May 20)

Today the Moon is in your sign lined up with unpredictable Uranus, which will make you feel impulsive and electrically charged. This can give you high energy and enthusiasm. However, it can also make you impulsive and capable of rash actions. Be aware of this and think before you act or speak.

Gemini (May 21-June 20)

This is a restless day! You have that feeling that you’re waiting for the other shoe to drop. Basically, the Moon is in a hidden part of your chart lined up with unpredictable Uranus, which makes you feel vaguely uneasy. Don’t worry, this feeling is brief. Gone by tomorrow.

Cancer (June 21-July 22)

A friend might surprise you today. Or perhaps someone in a group will do something you least expected? If you are caught off guard, the key is not to overreact or say something without thinking. Be cool. Give yourself a chance to have a sober second thought.

Leo (July 23-Aug. 22)

When dealing with parents, bosses and people in authority today, you might feel suddenly defiant or rebellious. Even if you feel this way, what’s the upside? Generally, authority figures don’t like to be threatened. They don’t want discourteous resistance. Remember where your bread is buttered.

Virgo (Aug. 23-Sept. 22)

Travel plans might suddenly change today. They might be cancelled, delayed or conversely, you might suddenly have to travel when you did not expect to do so. Similarly, the media or something to do with medicine or the law might be the source of a surprise to you as well. Stay chill.

Libra (Sept. 23-Oct. 22)

Be smart and double check issues related to banking, inheritances, taxes and debt because something to do with these areas could be the source of a surprise for you today. When it comes to money, wealth and assets, be smart and stay on top of things. You snooze, you lose.

Scorpio (Oct. 23-Nov. 21)

Don’t be surprised if a partner or close friend throws you a curveball today. Or perhaps, you will meet someone unusual? Something will occur because the Moon is opposite your sign and it is lined up with unpredictable Uranus, which means the people you encounter might surprise you.

Sagittarius (Nov. 22-Dec. 21)

Your work routine will be interrupted today almost certainly. Staff shortages, power outages, delays, equipment breakdowns as well as surprises when dealing with someone are likely. Therefore, be smart and give yourself extra time so that you have wiggle room to deal with the unexpected.

Capricorn (Dec. 22-Jan. 19)

Parents should be extra alert today because this is an accident-prone day for your kids. Meanwhile, social occasions might suddenly change. They could be cancelled or – surprise! You receive a fun invitation to go somewhere! Who knew? Could go either way.

Aquarius (Jan. 20-Feb. 18)

Something to do with your home routine will change today. Small appliances might break down or a minor breakage could occur. Perhaps someone unexpected will knock on your door? For starters, get dressed so that you are ready to deal with the unexpected. Stay on your toes.

Pisces (Feb. 19-March 20)

This is a mildly accident-prone day for your sign, which means you should pay attention to everything and be mindful. Think before you speak or act. You might meet new people today, especially someone unusual. Or someone might intrigue you?

If Your Birthday Is Today

Writer (James Bond creator) Ian Fleming (1908-1964) shares your birthday today. People are drawn to you because you’re interesting, friendly and entertaining. Personally, you have a busy, analytical mind. You observe a lot. This year, you have a strong zest for life! This is why you will socialize more and explore warm friendships with others. You might gain public recognition.

May 28, 2022 Current Moon Phase Digest

You can use this link to go forward or backward in time for Moon phase information. If you are curious, you can even find out what phase the Moon was in when you or anyone else was born.

From Moongiant.com

The Moon’s current phase for today and tonight is a Waning Crescent phase. In this phase the Moon’s illumination is growing smaller each day until the New Moon. During this part of the Moon cycle, the Moon is getting closer to the Sun as viewed from Earth and the night side of the Moon is facing the Earth with only a small edge of the Moon being illuminated. This phase is best viewed an hour or 2 before the sunrise and can be quite beautiful if you’re willing to get up early. It can also be a great time to see the features of the Moon’s surface. Along the edge where the illuminated portion meets the dark side, the craters and mountains cast long shadows making them easier to observe with a telescope or binoculars.

Visit the May 2022 Moon Phases Calendar to see all the daily moon phase for this month.

Today’s Waning Crescent Phase

The Waning Crescent on May 28 has an illumination of 4%. This is the percentage of the Moon illuminated by the Sun. The illumination is constantly changing and can vary up to 10% a day. On May 28 the Moon is 27.72 days old. This refers to how many days it has been since the last New Moon. It takes 29.53 days for the Moon to orbit the Earth and go through the lunar cycle of all 8 Moon phases.

The 8 Lunar Phases

There are 8 lunar phases the Moon goes through in its 29.53 days lunar cycle. The 4 major Moon phases are Full Moon, New Moon, First Quarter and Last Quarter. Between these major phases, there are 4 minor ones: the Waxing Crescent, Waxing Gibbous, Waning Gibbous and Waning Crescent. For more info on the Moon Cycle and on each phase check out Wikipedia Lunar Phase page.

RCW 86: Historical Supernova Remnant

Explanation: In 185 AD, Chinese astronomers recorded the appearance of a new star in the Nanmen asterism. That part of the sky is identified with Alpha and Beta Centauri on modern star charts. The new star was visible for months and is thought to be the earliest recorded supernova. This deep image shows emission nebula RCW 86, understood to be the remnant of that stellar explosion. The narrowband data trace gas ionized by the still expanding shock wave. Space-based images indicate an abundance of the element iron and lack of a neutron star or pulsar in the remnant, suggesting that the original supernova was Type Ia. Unlike the core collapse supernova explosion of a massive star, a Type Ia supernova is a thermonuclear detonation on a a white dwarf star that accretes material from a companion in a binary star system. Near the plane of our Milky Way galaxy and larger than a full moon on the sky this supernova remnant is too faint to be seen by eye though. RCW 86 is some 8,000 light-years distant and around 100 light-years across.
